Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello friends, it's mister Jim and welcome back to Kids
Animal Stories, where we learn about all kinds of amazing
creature skills. Today's story, we are gonna learn about lightning
bugs or fireflies. They're an amazing creature with an amazing skill.

(00:25):
Are you guys ready for today's adventure? Me too? Let's go. Caleb.
This is HQ. We need you to report back to base.
You're running low on your Lucifer rays Roger that this
is Caleb. I will be back pronto, Over and out.

(00:49):
Sh That was the voice not of a kid on
our spy team, but a real firefly or lightning bug.
We have all kinds of fun names for them. Do
you know what I'm the bug I'm talking about? Yeah,
they're so cool. Lightning bugs and fireflies. They're the bugs
that come out at night and they can glow. How

(01:12):
cool is that that they have like a built in
flashlight headlamp. It's so cool. But how in the world
do they do that and why in the world do
they do that? Well? On today's adventure, that is what
we're going to learn. As Caleb the Firefly was heading
back to base, he flew past a whole bunch of

(01:34):
his other buddies. It was a late, late, dark, dark
night and they were out patrolling checking for tree frogs.
What oh, Yes, one of the predators that likes to
eat fireflies are tree frogs, and tree frogs can be
very sneaky, and so fireflies. They can communicate with each other,

(01:59):
not through talking. They don't have loud voices, they do
have very bright bodies. Do you know a really important
code that spies have used for decades and decades. Yeah,
it's called Morse code. Morse code is a way to
talk to each other without using words. You're able to

(02:21):
send a message maybe through beeps or through flashing a
light like beep beep, beep, beep, beep beep, and the
combination of short beeps beep and long beeps beep makes
a different letter to the word. And so let's say
the word hello. What letters are in the word hello, Yes, H, E,

(02:47):
L l oh Hello. But if we were a lightning
bug and we needed to communicate that to the other
side of our base, how would we do that. Yeah,
they don't have loud voice. They can't say hello, but
they can flash their flashers to say the letter H.

(03:08):
The letter H in morse code is beep beep, beep beep, Yeah,
four beeps, and then the E is one beep beep,
the L is beep beep beep beep yeah, and then
another L and then the O is three long beeps
beep beep beep. Yeah. So that's how they can talk

(03:28):
to each other, just through flicking those lights on their tails,
just through morse code. Well, you see, Caleb had to
report back to base. He was running out of a
very important ingredient to his light. You see, they don't
have batteries in their bodies to turn the light on.

(03:51):
They have very special chemicals, and one very special chemical
is called luciferaise and cipherrays is an enzyme that helps
that light shine very very bright. Wouldn't that be silly
if we had a part of our body that could
shine like a firefly. What part of your body would

(04:14):
you like to have luciferrays and shine like a light bulb?
Maybe my fingers, That would be pretty silly if I
could make my fingers glow and then turn off. Or
I wonder if Rudolph has that in his nose that's possible,
Or maybe my ears that would be pretty cool. If

(04:35):
my ears could glow well either way. Fireflies they need
these very special enzymes, and Caleb was running low, so
he had to report back to HQ. Caleb, great work
out there. Did you see any of those tree frogs
out there? Yeah, well I saw one, one green tree frog.

(04:57):
He was out on the east side. But it still
gives us an enough clearance to fly back and forth.
That's great work. Great work, Caleb. Well, you need to
increase your supply of lucifer rays because you're down to
three percent and we cannot let you run out of
luciferrays and be left all on your own out there.

(05:19):
That would be too dangerous. Yes, that would be terrible,
said Caleb. And so Caleb took his vitamin supplements and
that gave him the luciferrayse that he needed and he
was ready to go as he headed out the door
to get back to work. Do you remember what they're doing? Yes,
fireflies they fly around at night, but there's some of

(05:42):
them that are on their spy team that helps them
see where tree frogs are and where When they find
a tree frog, they need to report it back to
their base so that everyone else knows to not fly
in that direction. Well, Caleb was heading back out. He
had a few more hours of nighttime that he had
to survey and make sure he knew where all the

(06:04):
tree frogs were. As he was flying out, something felt strange,
something was not right, but he shook it off and
kept going. He had flown all the way to the
other side of the forest, a place that they hadn't
been in a long time, and he needed to check
and see if there were any tree frogs in this

(06:25):
area of it. I hear them, okay, I gotta report
it back in. Calebs started flashing his light and all
of a sudden it got stuck on. His light was
glowing and wait a second, how do I turn this off?

(06:48):
It's not working? Oh no, Caleb's light on his tail
is now stuck on. Do you think that's a safe
thing for a bug to have in the middle of
a forest, surrounded by hungry tree frogs with a light
that stuck on it? It makes them easier to find.

(07:08):
Oh no, this is not good. Something must have been
wrong with that new supplement of luciferays, How is he
gonna return back to base without the tree frogs being
able to catch him? Caleb is in some serious trouble,
and we're gonna have to wait and see what happens
next on the next episode of Kids Animal Stories. Oh no,

(07:41):
I hope Caleb is gonna be okay. I hope he's
gonna be able to find a way to get back
to his base without the tree frogs eating him. Well,
do you love fireflies as much as me? Yeah? Those
are such cool bugs. Well, fireflies they need a couple
things to light up. They need oxygen and calcium and

(08:06):
adenocene triphosphate where we can just call it ATP and
the chemical luciferin. Oh my goodness, so many big words.
But they are very special bugs with some really special skills.
I'll see you next time on the next episode of
Kids Animal Stories. Bye.
