Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello friends, it's mister jam and welcome back to Kids
Animal Stories. Hip Hop, bottomooters, Hippopottamussai, hippo. Today's animal I've
actually met in the real world wild. I was sleeping
in a tent and then all of a sudden I
heard a loud sound. It was a hippo. Are you

(00:27):
guys ready for today's adventure? Me too, Let's go. What
was that? As I sat up from my tent, I
looked all around. It was not coming from my friend

(00:49):
who was sleeping. He did kind of snore a little bit,
but that sound did not come from him. What the
ho hoh? Is it a monster? I didn't know what
in the world was going on, But that was actually

(01:09):
the sound of a real hippopotamus. I was sleeping in
a tent in Kenya, which is a country in Africa,
and we were right next to a lake called Lake Victoria.
And Lake Victoria is home to a bunch of hippos.
Hippos are ginormous creatures that love to swim in water. Yeah,

(01:34):
they're kind of like a really big cow or a
ginormous pig. Maybe a pig and a cow blended together. Yeah, Well,
these hippos, they love water. They actually have to stay
in water. But they're not like fish. They don't breathe water.
They breathe air. But they can't hold their breath for

(01:56):
a very long time. How long do you think a
hippo can hold their breath? Do you think it's longer
than I can? I'm you know, old by breath. I
can make it all the way to ninety seconds, a
minute and a half. Do you think a hippo can
hold its breath longer than me? Yes, you're right. Hippos

(02:16):
can hold their breaths for ten minutes under water. Holy smokes,
that's a long time. Well. Today's story is about a
hippo named Henry, and Henry loved to go swimming. In fact,
he actually lived in his pool. He lived in a
lake called Lake Victoria. And today something crazy happened to him.

(02:41):
Wooh boy, Oh yeah, it's a good sleep. Well, today's
gonna be a good day. Can't wait to go eat?
You see, hippos they spend a lot of their day eating.
Did you know a lot of hippos They eat almost
ninety pounds of food every day? Holy smokes, that might

(03:06):
be two of you. Wow, that is a lot of plants.
As Henry stretched his legs and started swimming in the
water to go look for food, he found his friend Oxford.
Oh hey, Oxford. Oxford flew over and landed on Henry's back.
Oxford was an ox pecker, a bird that loves to

(03:30):
hang out with hippos, and these two had become best friends. Well, hello,
mister Henry, it is great to see you today. I
think today's gonna be a great day. It looks like
you have a couple juicy bugs on your back. Let
me eat him for you. Ow ow oh, thank you

(03:51):
so much for getting those. Ugh. I don't like when
bugs crawl on my back. It's so helpful that you
come and eat them before me. Hey, what is that
over there? Off in the distance. Henry saw something coming closer.
It was very big, something that he'd never seen before.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Oh why uh, let me go fly over there and
take a look.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Oxford flew over to get a closer look and quickly
turned around to tell Henry the bad news. Oh no,
you see that guy. His name is Cyrus, and he
is in a mean poacher. He wants to steal animals.
I hope he doesn't see us over here. Well, I'm

(04:36):
gonna go hide in the trees. Henry, you should probably
go under water and hold your breath until he's gone. Wait,
but like, what is a poacher?

Speaker 2 (04:46):
What does that mean?

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Said Henry. You see a poacher, They are not good people.
There are rules made to protect animals, and the rules
have to be followed or else you can get in
very big trouble. But poachers, they do not follow any rules.
And that over there, just like Oxford said, is Cyrus.

(05:11):
As Cyrus stepped out of his truck and squished his
big boots in the mud.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
All right, well, wonder what kind of creature I can
find today to bring home? This place is always full
of the craziest creatures that I just need to have.
I want all of them. But today, let's see what's.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
On the list. Cyrus opened up some kind of notebook.
He opened it up and turned a few pages. It's
like he had a whole collection in his notebook of
the animals that he wanted to steal. Oh no, I
really wonder what's inside that notebook. Maybe if we knew,
then we'd be able to stop him. All right, well,

(05:59):
it looks like today's day is hippo day. Good thing,
I came to a lake. I don't see any hippos, though.
Maybe I can just sit down and one will pop
up out of the water for me. Oh no, he's
looking for hippos in the same lake that Henry is in.

(06:22):
Oh phew, But Henry is underwater, holding his breath for
as long as he can. Oh, this has been a
very long time holding my breath under the water. I
wonder if he's gone. Maybe I can take a peek.
Henry swam up towards the top of the surface and

(06:43):
poked his nose up to take a little breath. Oh,
that's so much better, And he popped his eyes up
out of the water to take a look. He flicked
his ears around as two flies landed on his right ear.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Go away, fly.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Oh man, where's Oxford when I need him? Oxford was
still up in the trees, watching from above.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Henry.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Get out of there fast. As Henry turned around to
look at the trees, it was too late. A giant
net had been thrown on top of Henry our hippo.
All right, now, just calm down, you big creature. You're
coming home with me, said Cyrus the Poacher. Oh no,

(07:34):
is Henry the hippo going to be able to escape
where's he trapped forever? I hope Oxford is able to
help him, but we'll have to wait and see what
happens on the next episode of Kids Animal Stories. Great

(07:57):
job you listened all the way to the end. Yes,
hippos are really cool creatures. Do you know how much
they can weigh? They can weigh almost ten thousand pounds,
which is heavier than your car, almost two cars, that's
how big they are. Holy smokes, Henry, he's gotta eat

(08:19):
a lot of food.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Well, I can't wait to hear what happens on our
next episode and see if Oxford is able to get
him out of that trap. Have a super duper day
and we'll see you next time. Bye.
