Hello Critter Protectors.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
In our back yards. Well, my friends, are you ready
for today's adventure? Me too, Let's go. Little Men the
Chinese alligator had just made it through her very first winter.

(00:45):
Every year, Chinese alligators spend the colder winter months hunkered
down in their burrows, and Men was so excited to
vitally get back out to the river, the sunshine and
more adventures. She loved her siblings and her mom, but
she was getting cabin fever. Min was born in eastern China.

(01:08):
Like all Chinese alligators, she had a ginormous head with
a turned up snout. She'd heard of other types of alligators.
Her mom always called them distant cousins, but these Chinese
alligators were very special. You see, her species is critically endangered,

(01:29):
which means there are very few left in the wild.
They are very rare, and it's our job as critter
protectors to look out for species like Chinese alligators who
are critically endangered. Well, little Men was eager to get
out of the borough, and she was getting so excited
for the big day. Every year in April there was

(01:52):
a huge party called the yearly Basking Picnic. All the
alligators head out from their winter high outs. There's food,
time in the sun, and finally a change of pace.
Men had heard about this amazing party all winter long.
This would be your first time attending last year, she

(02:12):
was just well, just in her egg. And if you're
in an egg, m can't quite go to the party yet.
Do you know the feeling when it's finally summer vacation.
You're counting down the days to all the fun summer
things you like to do. Do you like swimming, eating
yummy food like bobsycles, or maybe soaking up some sunshine

(02:34):
like these Chinese alligators. Well that's exactly the feeling that
Men had inside of her, and she could barely contain it.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Ma'am, ma'am, i'm i'm i'm ma'm ma'm i mom, ma'm
my mom.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
How long until we had that a big picnic? Min
asked her mom. Oh, little men slowed down. I've I've
already told you several times. Tomorrow is the day we
will all leave the burrow. You must settle yourself down now,
it's not ready yet. Her mom tried to calm her down,

(03:09):
but there was no use. Men scurried back and forth,
and all of her siblings joined in. He started to
run around and pretended to be laying out in the
sun and rolling around in the mud in the water
and ah. After quite a long time and lots of bribing,
men finally fell asleep for the night. The next morning,

(03:36):
Min's eyes popped open and she smiled from snout to
jaw and all the way around her sharp set of teeth.
Today is the day, Today's day. Hooray away, men sang
her little song of excitement. When her family came out

(03:58):
of the burrow, Men looked around and squinted her eyes.
It was very bright, but she saw the most amazing sight.
She saw so many Chinese alligators mingling, talking, basking in
the sun, and she even saw some other young alligators
playing hey hi. There were snails, crustaceans, insects, and fish.

(04:23):
It was a dream come true. Mom, is all that
food for us too? Min asked. She was shocked there
was such a large amount of food. Chinese alligators are
what is called opportunistic feeders. They eat when they get
the chance and whatever they can find. Oh, yes, men,

(04:45):
the council worked hard to gather all this food for
the big special day. Run along, Now make some friends
and enjoy yourself. Men's mother encouraged her and gave her
tail a little shove to send her along. Then went
straight to the feast and tried a bit of everything.
She loved the snail's best. Mmm. Have you ever eaten

(05:09):
a snail?

Speaker 4 (05:12):
Me?

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Neither. When she turned around to head towards the group
of young alligators playing around, she heard a voice call
hell mom, mom or a small sumble Sonny called and
ran over towards Men.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Oh hey, Sunny, Hello, I miss you so much.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
How it's your winner? Was it fun or I wasn't
boring like mine? Min asked so many questions out of
pure excitement and seeing her very best friend that she
hadn't seated forever. She missed him so much and couldn't
wait to catch up.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Come on, mom, lots of strong I looked for having
a loud little count tough.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Tom Sonny and the friends dashed off. Men and Sonny
signed up as a team and got to work building
the best mud slide that they could. WHOA, have you
ever gone sliding in the mud before? Sounds kind of fun.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Say let's let's take this spot out a little and
make a little pull at the bottom.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Min was so excited to finally be outside in the
sunshine with her very best pal rud ouda. Mom said Sonny.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Ruttle tongue, hm, litten, call our slide the Splashtastic fantastic.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
For the look of that, I love it. When it
came time for the judging, the teenager Alligators who were
running the contest came by and absolutely loved theirs.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
And the prize for the best mud slide first place
goes to the splash Tastic Fantastic and Sonny.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
The two young alligators couldn't believe it. They looked at
each other and started to cheer. They had one first place.
The friends played some more, made new friends, laughed, relaxed,
and even basked in the sun some like the grown
ups did. After a while of basking, Min had an idea. Hey, Sannia,

(07:24):
have you ever gone over there? Min asked, Oh, for rubber.
Sonny was confused.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
You know, over on the other side of the marsh
and the far edge of the river.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Min was curious. What was over now past their cozy
little section of the river. Well, not exactly, but I've
heard it's cradles ould, Sonny responded. At that very moment,
the friends looked at each other and without saying a word,
slowly walked away from their group and started headed into
the marsh. Have you ever had the same ideas someone

(08:01):
without even saying a word. Well, Min and Sonny had.
This very thing happened, but their idea might not turn
out to be the very best. We'll have to wait
and see what happens on the next episode of Kids
Animal Stories. Great job, you listened all the way to
the end. If you love critters of all shapes and sizes,

(08:23):
we need you on our Critter Protector team, where we're

in our backyards and so much more. Well, the first
