Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello friends, it's mister Jim and welcome back to Kids
Animal Stories. Today's story we are gonna learn about Tina
the tiger salamander. Wait, what a tiger salamander? Have you
ever heard of one of those? I thought tigers weren't salamanders,
and I thought salamanders weren't tigers. But I guess Tina.

(00:25):
She's a tiger salamander. That is so cool. Are you
guys ready to learn about this amazingly awesome salamander? Mey too.
Let's go. It was a beautiful day in a very
beautiful forest as Tina the tiger salamander was swimming around

(00:50):
in a small pool of water. Yes, Tina the tiger salamander,
she's actually a larvae of a salamander. Did you know
that's Salamanders have a pretty similar life cycle as like frogs. Yeah,
so they they start out in eggs that are laid
in the water, and then those eggs hatch into kind

(01:12):
of like tadpoles. But salamanders they have they have little legs,
and they have gills that flow outside of their body.
Have you ever seen one of those before? They're pretty different. Yeah.
So Tina, she has legs and a tail, and she
has gills that flow out of the side of her head.

(01:32):
They kind of look like hair. But do you know
what gills are for? Yes, for breathing under water, kind
of like fish. Right, And sometimes tiger salamanders like Tina
can be a larvae for a very long time. Eight nine, ten,
Ready or not? Here? I come, shout at Dante. Oh.

(01:56):
Dante was a little darter fish that lived in the
same pool of water that Tina lived in, and Tina
and Dante had become very good friends and loved to
play hide and seek. Tina was very good at hiding.
She could almost disappear behind some leaves or or grass

(02:17):
growing in the water. She was very good. I'm gonna
find you, said Dante. Dante, the darterfish was very fast.
I think that's why they call him a darterfish because
he can dart really fast. As he zoomed all over

(02:39):
the pool of water, he searched high and low and
everywhere in between, and still could not find Tina. All right, Tina,
I think wait. I was about to give up. But
look look at that over there, said Dante as he
pointed with one fin. There was a tiny little bit

(03:01):
of Tina's tail sticking out from behind some water plants.
I found you, shouted Dante. Ah Man said, Tina, you
found me. Oh that was a good game. I've been
sitting there forever. I thought you would never find me.
But good job, said Tina. Yeah, this pool just keeps

(03:24):
getting smaller every days. It's getting a lot harder to
find hiding spots, said Dante. Yeah, you're right, it is
getting a lot smaller, said Tina. What do you think
happens if it like goes away completely? Wait, hold on
a second, what are Tina and Dante talking about? Oh? Yeah,

(03:46):
they live inside of this little kind of like a
big puddle or a little pool of water. You see
earlier in the year, there's a big rainstorm and that
rain collected in a small area in the forest, and
I think Dante got just kind of swept into there.
And there's some other creatures as well, and I think
Tina's parents might have left the eggs in there. Oh yeah,

(04:10):
tiger salamanders they often lay their eggs in temporary pools
of water. And hopefully that Tina is able to turn
into a real tiger salamander before the water dries out,
because if the water dries out and she still has
her kills, it'll be very hard for her to breathe.
I don't know. I don't think this pond will ever

(04:32):
dry up. I know it keeps getting lower and lower,
but there's gotta be another spring rainstorm coming soon. I
wish I would just transform into an adult already and
get rid of these gills, and I could see if
I could crawl over and see if there's a bigger
pond for us nearby, ha said Dante. You always talk
about transforming into some creature that can walk on land.

(04:55):
That's just preposterous, said Dante. Dante did not believe that
Tina the tigers alamander was ever going to leave the water.
He didn't know that salamander's go through that life cycle
of egg larvae and an adult where they don't have
those gills anymore. He thought Tina was just making up stories. No,

(05:16):
I promise it. Well, I've never done it myself, but
I've always heard that when you get big enough as
a tiger's and alamander and the gills go away and
you can walk out of the water. I don't know.
It sounds like one of those crazy stories you hear,
said Dante. Well, enough about that, let's play again, said Tina.

(05:37):
I'll count and you go hide. Go. As Tina closed
her eyes and started to count, drip, drip, drip, she
heard rain start to fall on Dante. Look, she shouted.
As the rain began to fall, they were so oh happy.

(06:01):
All that means the this pool is not gonna dry
out and we're gonna be saved, shouted Dina. Dante started
zooming around the pond, swimming in circles because he was
just so super duper happy. We have gotta throw like
a rain party, said Dante. It hasn't rained in weeks,
and we have to celebrate. Dante loved throwing parties. He

(06:26):
was kind of like the party animal of the pool.
Do you like having parties? What is something that you
would make a party for? Yeah, maybe your birthday, or
maybe a special day to celebrate your parents or your friends,
or a special holiday. Oh, there's so many great reasons

(06:49):
to have a party. And I think Dante's right. I
think they should have a rain party. I think I
kind of want to have a rain party. The next
time it rains. We should run outside and around in
the rain. And who well, as Dante and Tina and
all their friends in the pond started having their rain party.
They had an amazing night, and that night the rain

(07:14):
kept raining and raining. Dante, I think it's time for
me to go home and lay down getting tired, said Tina.
All right, Tina, well it's been a fun party. I'll
see you in the morning. Bye, said Dante. As Tina
swam back to her bedroom and lay down on her bed.

(07:39):
She was so happy to hear the rain. I kind
of like listening to rain as I'm falling asleep, like
on a sound machine or something like that. Yeah, that's
what Tina was listening to as she closed her eyes
and fell asleep. Well, while she was sleeping, it did
not stop raining. It rained harder and harder, and then

(08:04):
something crazy is about to happen. But we'll have to
wait and see what happens on the next episode of
Kids Animal Stories. Great job, you listened all the way
to the end. Did you know that tiger salamanders they

(08:24):
have a pretty they're pretty awesome. Their tail has poison
inside of it, and so if a predator, if a
creature tries to grab on and eat them, they stick
their tail in their mouth and the predator goes ah, gross,
that's terrible, and then it hurts their mouth, and then
the predator runs away and the tiger salamander is safe. Wow,

(08:46):
Tina's got a pretty cool defense. But what in the
world is gonna happen with this giant flood from the rain? Well,
I hope you have a super duper day and we'll
see you on the next part of this story. Bye.
