Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello, friends, it's mister Jim and welcome back to Kids
Animal Stories. It means so much to me to share
my love of critters of all shapes and sizes with you,
my friends. And it's because of your the ratings and
reviews and messages that you send me that just keeps
this show going. Well, friends, are you ready for today's

(00:26):
mystery episode about Barter? Huh, that's an interesting name. I
wonder if that's a clue to what kind of critter
he is.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Let's go.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
It was a beautiful spring morning as Barter was born.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Wait, what in the world just happened.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Barter is a little tiny baby that was born not
out of an egg, but just born. But he was
born with not fifty, not sixty, but seventy brothers and sisters.
Holy smokes, that's a lot of brothers and sisters. Do

(01:13):
you have seventy brothers and sisters? I don't think I've
ever met somebody with seventy brothers and sisters.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
But Barter.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Wow, that they know how to party at their family parties.
I bet well. It wasn't long after he was born
that he began on his journey of exploring the world. Yes,
you see this kind of critter. They actually don't hang
around their family very long after they're born. They're kind

(01:44):
of on their own from day one. Wow, I know
that is pretty wild. Can you imagine being one day
old and having to do everything on your own?

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I know I could not handle that. But barter was amazing.
From day one, he figured out that he could trade
other woodland creatures for things. He's very smart. Do you
know what it means to trade something? Yeah, it means
you find something that you have that's valuable to somebody else,

(02:19):
and then you find that someone that thinks that the
thing you have is valuable. So let's say I have
a jar of jelly, and I don't really need this
jar of jelly, but I see my friend over there
as a jar of peanut butter, and I want the
peanut butter instead of the jelly. And so I might
go over to the friend and say, hey, can I

(02:39):
give you this jar of jelly and you give me
that jar of peanut butter? And my friend they might
say no, but maybe they say yes. And if they
say yes, then we switch the things that we have.
That is how you trade and barter. What's very good
at trading. He traded a the coon once a shiny

(03:01):
silver bell for a delicious dinner of minnows. He gobbled
up all those minnows, well except for one, when he
traded that one minnow with a possum. Have I told
you when he traded a minnow for a possum?

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:17):
You see, the possum helped Barter get a piece of
his shed off of his tail that was stuck there.
Since Barter doesn't have any hands or legs, he needed
the help of the possum to get that shed off
of his tail. Speaking of shedding, do you know what
that means?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah, some critters.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
They have scales and they need to shed their scales
off because underneath they have bigger scales that.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Will replace them.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Because the bigger they get as they're growing, their scales
need to change size, and so shedding off the old
ones leaves room for the new ones to come in
right behind. Holy smokes, that seems like a very interesting clue.
Have you been hearing all these clues? Close your eyes
and imagine what kind of critter Barter could be. But

(04:08):
as Barter entered the warmer months, he started growing a
lot more and started having to shed his skin a
lot more often he would shed his skin by rubbing
up against things like rocks or old logs that would
help it come off. Because remember, he does not have hands,

(04:29):
and today was an exceptionally beautiful sunny day, Barter wanted
to go lay out on a nice big rock to
warm up underneath the sun. Ah, this feels so good,
said Barter.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Oh, I love sunbathing.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I love that I never have to put on sunblock.
Eye can get all the sun I want. And just
then another little critter jumped right in front of Barter's nose.
How we're a little drinfl Barter jumped back. It kind
of surprised him. You see, Barter doesn't have ears, so

(05:10):
he can't hear, but he's really good at reading lips.
So do you know what that means? To read lips?
It means if you can't hear somebody talking, but you're
able to see their mouth, you can almost you can
see the words that they're forming with the lips and
their tongue and their mouth, and so you can understand
what they're saying without even needing to hear them. It

(05:32):
can be a pretty hard thing to do, but Barter
is very good at it. Even though he couldn't hear
this friend, he definitely understood what this new friend, fuzzy
little friend was saying. Oh Hi, my name is Barter.
What's your name, Mamma scrub? Did you say squid? Said Barter, Yes, Uh,

(05:55):
that's mine. Um okay, I just wanted to make sure
I understood you correctly, because you're not a squid. You're
a squirrel, right, gott a little sir, I don't know,
full of a mobile, could work together? A little interested
in a job?

Speaker 2 (06:11):
A job?

Speaker 1 (06:12):
I was, Uh, I was just sunbathing here. But what
do you have in mind? Said Barter.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
R A nurse, But there's a normals girl there fliers around,
slur and t but I'll have a plum.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Squid the squirrel went on to describe a pretty awesome
plan that he had come up with. You see, with
the help of his new friend, Barter. Squid the squirrel
thought that they could work together to hunt for food
and then keep an eye out for that eagle that
would fly above them. See, eagles are predators to both

(06:54):
Barter and squid the squirrel. But Squid the squirrel thought
that some of the skill that Barter has could be
pretty useful if they worked together. Barter had some beautiful
stripes going down his body, with many different colors like
black and brown, a little bit of orange and yellow

(07:16):
and white. He was completely covered. Remember in those scales,
Squid wasn't sure exactly what kind of gritter that Barter was,
but he knew that he definitely was not a squirrel.
Have you thought through all the clues that we've been
talking about, do you know what kind of critter that
Barter is? Hmm, there's a lot of clues out there.

(07:38):
But wait, holy smokes, look at that. All of a sudden,
clouds completely covered the sky that Squid and Barter were under,
and all of a sudden, these ginormous ice balls began
to fall from the sky.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
What in the world is happening. If Squid and Barter
get hit by these giant ice balls.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
They could get seriously hurt. Are they gonna be able
to take cover in time? Or are they gonna be
knocked out on a cold ice ball. We're gonna have
to wait and see what happens on the next episode
of Kids Animal Stories.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Great job, you listened all the way to the end,
and who remembers all those clues? There were so many,
I've written some of them down. Do you remember how
many brothers and sisters Barter has? Yeah, seventy, Holy smokes.
And uh, let's see, does Barter have hands and feet? No,

(08:42):
you're right, he does not. Uh, and he doesn't have ears.
He has stripes. Going down is back off. This is
gonna take a lot of work, my friends. Well, I'm
gonna keep thinking, and I hope you have a super
duper day because I will see you on the next adventure.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Sure bye.
