About Mr. Jim:

Hi! I'm Jim Jacob, a South Carolina based creator. I started as a podcaster by accident. Our first real episodes on the internet were me trying to find a solution to help tell my sons stories as I was traveling for work. I recorded some stories and hoped that by uploading them to a podcast app, my wife and kids could have easy access to listen. What started as a fix for our family’s bedtime routine interruption has grown into a worldwide audience with hundreds of thousands of listeners. My wife Jocelyn and I have 3 kids and love inspiring others towards greater imagination and curiosity.

(00:26):
badge of the mail well. Today is a mystery episode.
Listen to all the clues and try and figure out
what critter this is. Are you guys ready?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Me too?

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Let's go. It was a beautiful day early in the
morning in the meadow. As Clover had just opened her
eyes for the day. She peeked around and all was

(00:55):
quiet in her cozy, grassy home. All her brothers and
sisters were still sleeping. The dirt walls around them kept
them super cozy and very safe. Is anybody else awake?
Whispered Clover to no response. Everyone was still sleeping. Like

(01:17):
I want to get up and go in. I just
got all this energy. I need to hop around a
little or something. Clover wasn't tired anymore, Even though she
wasn't just a little kit, She decided to venture off.
Have you ever woken up like that before, maybe a
little too early, earlier than the rest of your family,

(01:38):
and you had a lot of energy and you felt like, oh,
the day just needs to start. Yeah, that's how Clover
felt just now. She poked her head out the door,
and oh, even my tummy says it's time to get up.
I need to find some breakfast, she said. She hopped

(01:59):
out and and peered through the tall grass above her home.
She sees small droplets of dew sparkling in the sunlight,
hearing some crickets in the distance, and even a bluebird
way up in the tree next to her home. Have
you ever been outside really early in the morning, like

(02:22):
the sun is just starting to peek up over the horizon,
and sometimes there's fog like that cloudy stuff that looks yeah,
fog or wet dew drops on the grass. Hmmm. Sometimes
if it's cold, the dew might turn to frost and
it looks like tiny white icicles all around. Have you

(02:45):
ever seen all that before? Yeah, that means it's really
early in the morning. Oh. Clover decided she wanted some berries.
She knows there's some just on the other side of
the tall grass, and if she hurns, she might just
make it back before anyone else in her family even
knows she's out. Hmm, do you think that sounds like

(03:06):
a good idea for this little young critter to go
out all by her lonesome? And yeah, I don't think
that sounds like a good idea to go out this
early in the morning all by herself. She wanders, and
very quickly her fur gets wet rubbing on the grass. Oooh, whoa,

(03:30):
that's some cold, dewy. The sun comes and dries me soon.
I definitely need to get warmed up as soon as possible,
she thought to herself. As she hopped along a trail
that she had hopped with her brothers and sisters a
hundred times. She came to a muddy, mucky puddle. All right,

(03:53):
just gotta jump over this thing and then I'll be
on my way, she thought to herself. One do what it'splat? Oh,
her hind legs got splattered with mud. Her little white
patches of fur are more like patches of brown. Now, Oh,

(04:14):
that was disgusting, said Clover as she shook her big
floppy ears. But then her tummy rumbled again, reminding her
of why she went out in the first place. Oh, yeah,
I really need to.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Get something to eat.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Feeling very hungry, as she hopped along, she all of
a sudden heard a sound in the grass. Clover screamed
and then realized it was just another baby. This was
a baby deer. Oh my, I'm so sorry to scare you.
My name is hi, my name is Fiona. Why are

(04:51):
you out here all along? You're so small and too
young like me, aren't you? Asked Fiona the fawn. Yeah,
I was just hungry, so I kind of left my
family to go to find something to eat. And what
about you? Why are you out here all by yourself?
Asked Clover. Well, I'm I'm not exactly by myself. My

(05:13):
mom's right over there. She's out getting something to eat
for us, and so she just leaves me and makes
a safe place for me to hide in the grass
like this. Yeah, that's a really interesting thing about deer.
So do you know what a baby deer is? Called
a fawn? Yes, that's not the critter that Clover is,

(05:36):
but that's who Fiona is and baby deer. Sometimes you
might even see one hiding in the grass as still
as can be, and you might wonder, oh my, it's
all alone. Did it lose its family? Well, actually, deer
they often teach their baby fauns to high in the

(06:00):
grass wild their mother goes and gets some food. So
if you see a baby deer those fawns, I bet
it's mother is very nearby. Yeah, it feels nice to
know that my mom is close by. Because there's definitely
predators out here, said Fiona. Predators. I kind of forgot

(06:21):
about predators, said Clover. Oh yeah, they're definitely out here.
You should probably head back home and ask your parents
for some food if you're feeling hungry.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
I'm just gonna.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Hop a little bit further. Uh, it should probably be okay.
I'm just really hungry, and I don't think it's gonna
be that dangerous, said Clover. She said goodbye to Fiona
and continued on her journey to find something to eat.
Along the way, she passed a bullfrog next to a
tiny creek who also has some important advice for her

(06:56):
about being out here alone.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
You know, sh knocks, safe out tear for little ones
like you. Now, ribbid ribbit, these parts are lurking with predators.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Unfortunately, Clover ignored another critter's advice. Both the fun and
the bullfrog had warned her that there's predators around here
and she should turn home, but she chose not to listen,
and I think she's about to regret that. Oh wow,
those look like some delicious berries over there, said Clover.

(07:36):
Just across the creek was some delicious blueberry bushes, And
boy did those look tasty. I think I can make
that jump. I'm a pretty good jumper, can totally make it,
said Clover. One, two, three, s bling, She hopped right
over the creek and sturried under the blueberry bushes. Oh

(07:57):
these are delicious. It's totally worth it. Wait a second,
what was that sound? All of a sudden, out of nowhere,
she started hearing something walking through the brush. She could
hear the sticks cracking and the leaves shuffling. This definitely

(08:18):
sounded big enough to be a predator, and she did
not know what to do. Oh no, what in the
world is gonna happen with Clover? Is she gonna be okay?
Or did she make not a good choice in heading
over there by herself? And oh dear, we're gonna have
to wait and see what happens on the next episode

(08:40):
of Kids Animal Stories.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Hey friends, I need your help celebrating a birthday. Drummerroll please,
Happy birthday River, who's turning six years old. River loves skiing,
riding his bike in our mountain town, and he loves
Christmas and Santa Claus. Oh, and River is a super
kind brother, friend, and son.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
Wow, River, I'm so glad we got to celebrate you
and your big day on the show. Happy sixth birthday. Well,
my credit protectors, I hope you all have a super
duper day and I'll see you next time.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Bye.
