Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello friends, it's mister Jim and welcome back to Kids
Animal Stories. It's time to put your thinking cups on.
You know what time it is. It's time for a
mystery episode. Dun dundum. Well, friends, No, seriously, I'm gonna
lay out a whole bunch of clues in this story,

(00:24):
and I'm not gonna tell you what critter this is
until the next episode. So it's your job to pall
the clues together and make your guests. Are you ready
for today's mystery challenge? Me too, Let's go. It was
a cool spring afternoon as our friend Miss Doe was

(00:48):
trying to find a place to have her baby. You see,
it was pretty dangerous out there for her. There was
one kind of predator that she was very cautious of.
And do you know what that was? Coyotes. Yes, coyotes
can be pretty dangerous for when a critter like Miss

(01:10):
Doe is having her little baby. As she was jumping
through field to field, she was trying to find somewhere
safe to have her little baby. She's covering quite a
bit of land. She lives where I used to live
a long time ago, in a state called Illinois. Illinois

(01:31):
is in the middle of the United States, and the
springtime is a great time to be alive, as all
the plants wake up from their winter rest and little
critters like Miss Doe are finding a place to have
their baby. She travels through neighborhoods, parking lots, and even

(01:54):
jumps across a dangerous road or there, and she is
very fat. She also has some pretty amazing camouflage that
she uses to hide amongst the trees and branches and
leaves and grass, but she always is on alert. Along

(02:15):
the way, she heard a sound. What is that? Her
ears perked up and her tail flickered. What was that sound?
As her head panned left and right. She was right.
It was a whole bunch of robins that started to
make some loud noise. Do you know what a robin is? Yeah,

(02:37):
it's a really cool bird that has like a grayish
brown back with kind of a red tummy, and they
are kind of the alarm for a critter like Miss
do when they start talking very loudly. Sometimes it means
that they see a worm on the ground, and sometimes
it means there's a coyote nearby. And Miss Doe had

(03:01):
to be very careful as she darted through the grass.
She had to find a place to hide. She knelt
down next to a tree and stayed very still. What
felt like an eternity had finally passed. The robins stopped chirping,
which meant that the coyote or whatever it was must

(03:24):
have went away. As Miss Doe stood up and turned around,
there was ha She jumped back, but it was actually
the same kind of critter as Miss Doe, and she said,
Oh dear, I'm so sorry to have startled you. My
name is Winnifred, and oh dear, you look like you're

(03:48):
about to have a baby. Is that true, asked Miss Winnifred. Yes,
I am, and I'm so glad that it's just you
and not a coyote. I heard all those birds making
those loud noises, and you just know you can never
be too careful, especially with me almost about to have
a baby jump out of my belly. Miss Winifred laughed

(04:11):
with Miss Doe, and they walked deeper into the forest together.
You know I don't have many friends. Do you mind
if I stay with you and I can help you
with the little baby once it's born, said Miss Winnifred. Oh,
that would be amazing, said Miss Doe. I could really

(04:32):
use the help. I've never had a baby before, and
I hear there are lots of work. Oh yes, they're
quite a bit of work. They require a lot of
eating and sleeping, and they do cry a lot. But
in the end, the memories make it all worth it.
I've had many of my own, said Miss Winnifred. It

(04:56):
made Miss Doe feel a lot better knowing that she
had become friends with someone who was much more experienced
than her with this. That can be a good thing
to find friends that have gone on before you and
you know they've done a good job at doing something,
and so those are good people that you want to

(05:16):
be friends with because they can help lead you along
the way and head you in the right direction. The
sun was starting to set after a nice cool spring day,
and Miss Doe and Miss Winnifred wanted to go out
and get something to eat. You see, critters like Miss
Doe and Miss Winnifred, they are most active in the

(05:37):
dawn or at dusk. Dawn means when the sun rises,
and dusk means when the sun is about to set,
so those are the most active times for critters like
these As they knelt their heads down in the grass
to start eating. Me Oh, it felt so good to

(05:57):
eat some nice fresh grass. All of a sudden, Miss
Doe stopped eating and kind of froze and lifted her head.
Miss Winifred looked over and said, are you okay, dear?
I don't know my tummy something feels different. Oh that

(06:18):
that means it might be time for the baby, said
Miss Winifred excitedly. And just then, all of a sudden,
the robins started chirping very loudly again, But this time
it sounds different. Miss Doe and Miss Winifred looked at
each other. They knew that sound. There was a coyote nearby.

(06:40):
They have gotta find a place to hide. But wait
a second. If there's a coyote nearby, I don't think
that sounds like a very good time to have a baby.
Oh no, what do you think? Have you been paying
attention to all the clues? Who in the world is
Miss Doe And what in the world's going to happen

(07:00):
with her and her baby and Miss Winterfred. I'm not sure,
but we're gonna have to wait and see what happens.
On the next episode of Kids Animal Stories, great job.
You listened all the way to the end. So did
you pick up on all the little clues that I said?

(07:24):
All right, what kind of critter do you think miss
Doe is? Is she a big critter or a little one?
Let's see. Well, she has ears on the tail and
seems like she has good hearing. She only comes out
at Duskin's and sunrise and hmm, man, she's about to

(07:44):
have a baby. What kind of critter do you think
miss Doe is? I'm gonna have to do a lot
of thinking because I'm not sure yet. Well, friends of you,
have a super duper day and I will see you
on the next adventure. Bye.
