Speaker 3 (01:17):
The message of Jesus is glorified. In our last story.
Paul preached in Corinth and stayed for about a year
and a half. He then went to Ephesus with Aquila
and Priscilla. There they taught Apollos, who took the Gospel
to southern Greece. In this story, Paul will pray for
(01:39):
the Holy Spirit for some followers in Ephesus, and then
there will be a massive riot in the city, as
inspired by acts.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Hi There. It's Julianne Thompson guest hosting for Juliet Jeffrey
Settler with the Kids Bible Air podcast. I am so
happy you're here today. Today we get to hear what
Paul does when people who don't care about Jesus get
everybody else riled up about the good news he's sharing.
What's going to happen? Well, let's jump in and find out.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Paul traveled a great distance and came to the city
of Ephesus. In the city, he found some men who
wanted to follow him. Paul asked them, did you receive
the Holy Spirit when you believed? They responded and told
Paul that they had never heard of the Holy Spirit.
Paul explained that the Baptism of John which they had received,
(02:42):
was only pointing to the baptism of Jesus. When they
heard this, they were baptized in the name of Jesus.
Paul then laid his hands upon them and the Holy
Spirit came down upon them. They allowed the Holy Spirit
to speak through them. There were twelve men in this group.
(03:03):
For three months, Paul preached about the Kingdom of God
in the Jewish place of worship. Some people refused to
receive the message of Jesus, and they publicly spoke against
the gospel. Because of this, Paul and his followers left
and went to a public gathering place. For two years,
Paul and his followers discussed with the local people, and
(03:26):
the message of Jesus spread from this place to all
of the people of Asia. God was causing great miracles
to happen through Paul, and many sick people were healed.
Some Jewish men tried to use the name of Jesus
to have power, but they did not have respect for
this power. The evil spirits they tried to have power
(03:49):
over turned and attacked the men. Because of this, many
of the Jews and Greeks were afraid, but the name
of Jesus was glorified before all all of the people.
People began to give up their evil practices. The message
of Jesus reached many people and was glorified greatly. God
(04:11):
spoke to Paul, telling him that he would soon go
to Jerusalem. He believed that after he went to Jerusalem,
he would then go to Rome. Before he left, a
man named Demetrius caused trouble for the Christians. He was
a silversmith and his business of making idols was growing
smaller because of them. He accused Paul of speaking evil
(04:34):
against the goddess Artemis, who was the most famous god
in the city. As people received Jesus, they got rid
of their idols and did not buy anymore. Demetrius caused
the idol makers to rise up and caused great chaos
in the city. They yelled, great is Artemis of Ephesians.
(04:56):
Many of the people in the crowd did not even
know why they were sh for there was great confusion.
After many hours of this riot, a man was able
to calm down the crowd. He told them that if
they had an issue with Paul, they must peacefully take
him to a court of law. Finally, he convinced them
(05:16):
to go home and settle down.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Oh my, Paul's life has become anything but boring, hasn't it.
God is using him to do amazing things, and some
people love it, they want to know even more about
God's kingdom. But some people hate it and want it
to stop. That's interesting, isn't it. Did you know that
(05:46):
the same thing still happens today when you talk about Jesus.
Some people will love it, they want to hear even more,
and some.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
People will hate it.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
They want you to stop talking about Jesus all together. Now,
why do you think that is? Do you think it
has to do with you and the message you're bringing,
or do you think it's more about those people and
their hearts. Well, let's take another look at today's story
and see if we can find out. Paul is taking
(06:18):
more and more road trips, telling more and more people
about Jesus. Whenever he goes, he listens to people's worries
and patiently answers their questions. God even does miracles through him.
Bodies are being healed, evil spirits are being kicked out,
and people are receiving the Holy Spirit. Everywhere Paul goes
(06:41):
and everywhere people hear what he's saying. Lives are being changed.
The message of Jesus is making a big difference. But
in Ephesus, the message of Jesus is causing a big problem.
You see, all throughout Greece and Rome, people worship other
gods idols made out of silver or gold or stone.
(07:05):
And when people start believing in Jesus, they stop believing
in those other gods, and they stop buying idols made
out of silver or gold or stone. And the people
who make those idols out of silver or gold or
stone start losing money. That's what happened to Demetrius and Ethesus.
(07:27):
Demetrius doesn't really listen to the message of Jesus or
care about it. He just doesn't like that it's costing
him money. His heart is focusing on what he's losing,
not what he could gain. And so Demetrius tries to
stop God's work. He thinks he could stop Jesus by
stopping Paul. But Jesus can't be stopped, can he.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
No.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Demetris starts talking to other people about how bad Jesus is,
and then he starts yelling, and his yill makes other
people start yelling, and soon a whole crowd of people
are yelling. The crowd gets bigger and bigger, and louder
and louder. People are hopping mad. They're shaking their fists
and stomping their feet and yelling at Paul, and most
(08:14):
of them don't even know why. It's all a little crazy.
Do you know, the same kind of things still happens today.
Lots of people don't really listen to the message of
Jesus or care about it. Their hearts get focused on
what they can lose and not what they can gain.
(08:34):
And when they start yelling about it, other people start
yelling about it too. They get hopping mad, shaking their
fists and stomping their feet and yelling at Christians. And
many of them don't even know why. They just hear
other people getting mad, so they get mad too. It's crazy.
And when that happens, what do you think you can do? Well?
(08:58):
Like Paul, you can listen into people's worries and patiently
answer their questions. You can show them God's love by
helping them and praying for them. You can help them
care about the message of Jesus by the way you
live your life. Some people will listen and love it,
and some people will not, And that's okay, because, like Paul,
(09:23):
the only thing you really need to focus on is
loving and obeying Jesus, He'll take care of the rest.
I am so happy you join me today. Come back
