Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following night, the Lord stood by him and said,
cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me
at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome Acts
twenty three eleven. Dear God, no one can comfort us
like you when we feel alone and sad. Only you
(00:22):
can fill our hearts with peace. And even though we
can't see you, we know you were there. You promised
that you would be. Thank you for being our comforter
and our friend. In Jesus' name, I pray Amen.

Whitewashed Tombs. In our last story, Paul made his way
to Jerusalem and was arrested in the temple and told
his personal story, which enraged the crowd. Paul was a
Roman citizen and so he was given his rights and untied.
In this story, the Jews will continue to plot away
(01:34):
to peel Paul as inspired by acts.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Hi Friends Australia and we are so excited to be
with you today. For another story in Kids Bible in
a Year podcast, Paul is being passed around like a
basketball the day, avoiding the Jews, secretly sent off to
another town and thrown into prison one again. Then in
the middle of it all, Jesus is going to show
(02:04):
up right there in front of him and give him
all the strength he needs. Listen close and ask God
in your heart to speak to you today.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Since Paul was a Roman citizen, that meant that he
could not be punished without a trial. So the commander
brought Paul to the Jewish Council to give him a trial.
Standing before all the leaders of the community, Paul said,
please listen to me. I will defend myself. I know
I am innocent because what I did was good in
(02:37):
the eyes of the Lord. The High Priest heard what
Paul said and called over some guards to hit Paul
in ther mouth. God will hit you back.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
You make no sense.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
You punish me because I break the law. But tell
your guards to hit me, which is against the law
as well. Paul was frustrated. He didn't understand why they
were treating him so rudely. Who do you think you are?
You can't talk to him like that, He's the high priest.
One of the men on the council yelled at Paul,
(03:10):
clearly offended. I'm so sorry. Paul apologized. I didn't realize
he was the high priest. I know the scripture tells
us not to talk back to the ruler of the people.
When he looked at the council, he saw that there
were two different groups that made up the men in
the meeting. Even though these two groups made up the council,
(03:30):
they had very different beliefs. Sodyces didn't believe that people
could come back from the dead, and they didn't believe
in angels. The Pharisees believed in everything. They didn't. The
council started to argue with one another. In the midst
of their yelling, one of the council members grabbed Paul.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Other members pulled.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Him as well, until a soldier saved him. The soldier
took Paul back to where the other soldiers lived. While
everyone was sleeping, the lord appeared to Paul and spoke
to him, don't be.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Down on yourself.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
You represented me to my people here in Jerusalem. Now
you will go to Rome and do the same thing.
When the morning came, forty men all sat down and
had a meeting about Paul. They made a promise to
each other that they wouldn't eat or drink until Paul
was dead. These same men went to the Jewish council
and said, you need to examine Paul again. Tell the
(04:25):
commander that you want another trial. Whenever Paul comes close
to us, we will kill him. This will make life
better for all of us. There will be no more
trouble for the Pharisees or the Sodyces. Paul's nephew heard
the men talking and ran as fast as he could
to Paul. Taking a deep breath, Paul asked one of
(04:47):
the soldiers to come over. Can you take my nephew
to the commander. He has something to tell him. When
Paul's nephew met with the commander, he confessed everything he
heard the forty men say. The commander told Paul's nephew
that he understood. The commander got a huge group of
guards in different ranks to protect Paul and take him
(05:07):
to another city. In this other city, he would be
under the protection of another man named Felix. The commander
sent a letter to Felix that stated, the Jews want
to kill Paul, but they can't because he is a
Roman citizen. We gave him a trial, but the council
started arguing about something he said about God. What he
(05:27):
said definitely did not deserve death or even a night
in jail. There is a secret plot to kill Paul,
and that's why I am sending him to your city.
I'll send the people who accused him so you can
have a trial in your city. Hopefully it will go
a lot better than the trial that happened here. Paul
was safely brought to Felix a city named Caesarea. While
(05:50):
he was there, he was allowed to stay under guard
in the palace Herod Beult until his trial.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Okay, let's talk about everything that's happened in today's Paul's story.
As we heard, he was brought to the Jewish High
Council for a trial. This was a big chance for
him to speak in front of very important rulers. Was
he nervous It doesn't seem so. The Bible says that
(06:22):
he spoke boldly and with passion. That means he was strong, loud,
and confident. Do you know what makes you bold and
strong when everything in you is telling you to be scared.
The Holy Spirit of God. It's the same spirit that
lives inside of you and inside of me. When you
(06:44):
need to speak up for God or go the right
way when everyone else is going the wrong way, the
Holy Spirit will give you the strength to do it. Remember,
there was nothing special about Paul, but there was something
special about God working through Paul. So Paul told these
(07:05):
important rulers that he had done nothing wrong, only to
get hit in the mouth by a guard. Not knowing
it was the high priest, the one in charge who
commanded the guard to hit him. Paul accused him of
being a whitewashed tomb. What did he mean by that?
Think back to how Jesus spoke to the Pharisees and
(07:27):
the many teachers of the law who loved to judge
others and thought they were better than everyone. Paul meant
that the man who ordered the guard to hit him
looked nice and clean on the outside, but inside his
heart was dirty and simple. This is always a good
reminder for those who love and follow God. Does my
(07:49):
outside match my inside? In other words, am I pretending
to be good? But inside I am selfish, prideful or hateful?
Am I looking like I have everything together? But my
heart is far from God. Well, since the council couldn't
stop arguing and fighting over whether or not Paul should
(08:10):
be punished, the soldier took him away before another big
fight broke out and threw him in jail with the
other prisoners. Today we read a special part of Paul's story.
Jesus came to cheer up Paul in prison. It's as
if God knew Paul was feeling sad and he wanted
(08:32):
to remind him of his love. It's like God whispered
to him, cheer up, you were doing great. I'm so
proud of you. Keep going, keep preaching my message wherever
you go, and never quit. I am with you. That's
the kindness of God. He's so loving and so tender
(08:55):
and so close to us. He loves his children so much,
and when they are sad, he is sad. Just as
Jesus spoke lovingly to Paul, he speaks lovingly to us
today through his word. He reminds us that no matter
what we do, he loves us and will never leave us.
(09:18):
He tells us that when things get sad, we can
rest in him and trust him to handle it all
well as we are. The Jews were not giving up
and put together a plan to kill Paul. Paul's nephew
just happened to hear about this and told the commander.
So the story ends with Paul being sent off secretly
(09:41):
to a place called Cessaiah to begin a new trial
under a governor named Felix. It's not over yet, but
the stage is set for Paul with another big opportunity
to share the gospel, and of course he's going to
take it. Thanks for listening. Ready to say it with me?
