(00:25):
let's jump right in. In a quiet little town called Nazareth,
there lived a sweet young woman named Mary. Mary was
engaged to be married to a man named Joseph. They
(00:47):
were both thrilled. Maybe Mary was planning her wedding, dreaming
about what yungy foods her guests would like, like sweet
golden honey, fresh bread with delightfully plump and juicy grapes.
How beautiful her long and flowing dress would look. All
(01:09):
was going according to her and Joseph's plan when it
got interrupted. One day, when Mary was maybe in her
house sweeping up some straw from the stone floor, an
angel suddenly appeared. God sent this angel named Gabriel to Mary.
(01:37):
Mary dropped her broomstick in surprise and wonder. Her mouth
hung open, speechless an angel. An angel was in front
of her. As she stood staring in amazement at the angel,
Gabriel began to.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Speak, Greetings, you, who are highly favored. The Lord is
with you.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Mary was nervous. Was this a bad greeting? Was she
in trouble? What was going to happen? All these thoughts
swirled through her mind as she nervously picked at her nails.
The angel, sensing Mary's fears, said.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
To her, do not be afraid, Mary, God loves you
and is going to use you in a mighty way.
You will give birth to a child, a son, and
you will name him Jesus. He will be great and
will be called the Son of the Most High, and
(02:47):
the Lord God will give to him the throne of
his father David, and he will reign over the House
of Jacob forever and of his kingdom. There will be
no end.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Whoa remember Mary was a real person. Imagine getting this news.
Maybe Mary thought, oh my, this is big news, bigger
than my wedding. I'm planning, bigger than anything I've ever
(03:27):
thought of or seen or done or said. Then maybe
Mary had doubts. Who am I that God would even
choose me? I've never been a mom. I'm not rich,
I'm not the fastest or even the smartest woman in town.
(03:49):
She looked at the Angel Gabriel and asked, but I
don't understand how this will happen. Gabriel answered her.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power
of the most High will overshadow you. So the holy
one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Even Elizabeth, your relative, is going to have a child
in her old age, and she who was said to
be unable to have a child, is pregnant. For no
(04:28):
word from God will ever fail.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Mary stood there, room still lying next to her on
the floor. She took it all. In. The town outside
continued as usual, people walk through the streets to the market,
going to buy their eggs and goats. Everything seemed so normal,
(04:58):
But now she was was something she never imagined would happen.
And to her, what would other people think and say?
How would she explain this to her family, to her friends? Well,
if Mary had these thoughts, she silenced them. Looking straight
(05:22):
at Gabriel, she humbly answered, I am the Lord's servant.
May it be to me as you have said. And
with that, the Angel vanished listeners. Remember, Mary was supposed
(05:46):
to be marrying Joseph soon, and obviously he would need
to know about this. Well. Joseph does find out, but
must not believe her because he decided to quietly call
off the wedding. He was trying to be kind, hoping
not to bring too much attention to Mary. Sometimes I
(06:10):
wonder if Mary was sad though she had a wonderful
purpose to have Jesus as her son, to give birth
to the Savior. Now Joseph, who she loved, was not
going to marry her. How hard it must have been
for her to explain and for Joseph to not believe.
(06:33):
But our story is not over yet. God has it
covered and nothing is impossible for him. One night, Joseph
was brushing his teeth, preparing for bed. He said his
prayers and hopped straight into bed. Soon Joseph the fast asleep.
(07:00):
God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream. The
angel told Joseph.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take
Mary home as your wife. The baby in her is
from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son,
and you are going to give him the name Jesus.
Because he will save his people from their sins.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
The next morning, Joseph woke and rubbed the sleep from
his eyes. The Bible doesn't tell us what his morning
was like, but it does say that he did what
the Angel commanded him to do. I can only imagine
(07:54):
as he remembered the dream what the angel said that
he skipped breakfast, threw on his clothes, and ran straight
to Mary's house. I imagine him short of breath, sweat
covering his face, and knocking on Mary's door, just hoping
that she would be home. He wanted to obey the
(08:15):
message God had sent him. Oh just a moment, please,
I'm coming. Oh hello, Joseph, Mary.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Hey, you'll never guess. Last night in a dream God, Well,
God told me everything.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
I picture Mary standing in the doorway, simply smiling with joy.
Well you know what happens next. Joseph and Mary get married.
Joseph took Mary home to be his wife, just as
the angel told him to do, and just like the
(08:58):
Angel said, they would have a baby. And what do
they name that baby? Boy? Say it out loud, Jesus,
that's right, Jesus, And we celebrate his birthday as Christmas. Well,
(09:19):
that is it for our story today? But before we go,
let's think about what we just heard. Just like Mary,
your plans may not go like you think they're going
to go. You might have surprises, doubts. You might be
unsure about what God has asked you to do. Maybe
(09:41):
you are afraid you'll get made fun of, or you
might think God, You've got the wrong person. I'm not
the tallest or smartest, I'm not always the bravest person.
But remember God will help you along the journey, and
(10:01):
he chose you. Tell me out loud some things that
He's told us his followers to do. Read the Bible,
pray to him. He tells us to love of neebles
just like we love o self. Thanks for sharing. Some
(10:24):
of you may have said things like tell others about Jesus,
forgive help others in need, share the truth. Remember these
are things each of us are called to do. And
no matter how little or how big it is, God
will help you do what He has asked you to do.
(10:46):
He doesn't tell you to do something and walk away
just wishing you good luck. No, He is a good,
good father who is close by. He loves you. Before
we end our time together today, kids and parents. Let's
(11:08):
share that love and hope that we have. Let's share
it with other kids. My kids have done this with
Oasis for Orphans. We've really enjoyed it, so we're sharing
it with your family to enjoy too. Simply fill in
the prayer card for the girls in Kenya and send
them hope with your prayer for them kids. You can
even attach drawings. This is something that you can do.
I'm always looking for ways that our whole family can participate,
(11:32):
and this is something that's perfect for that. I have
such a heart for kids, so I'm always looking to
share organizations like Oasis for Orphans who are helping, loving
and protecting children. The link to share your prayer is
in the show notes and it takes maybe five minutes.
You can do it today. Thanks again everyone, I hope
you continue to join us on the Christmas episodes this month.
(11:55):
Merry Christmas everyone, and as always, bye for now.
