Listen to another fun episode of Kids' Bible Stories. Today
we're continuing our thrilling adventure in our Elisha series. In
(01:08):
today's story, we find ourselves in a place called Samaria. Kids.
You can pause and find Samaria on a map if
you like. Many of your Bibles will have a map
in the back that you can use to find it.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
During the time of today's scripture, they'd experienced war and
now a famine. Take a guess and say out loud
what you think a famine is.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
I think it has somebody to do with food.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
A famine is when there isn't enough food for people
to eat for a long time. Imagine if your grocery
store ran out of food and no new food came
for a long time. Sometimes this happened because there wasn't
enough rain to grow crops, insects ate the plants, destroying them,
(02:07):
or even war could stop them from getting their food supply.
They had zip zero nothing for food. But let's hear
what happens. We begin our story here. The city of
(02:31):
Samaria was trapped. Enemy armies surrounded the city so no
one could go in or out. Inside the city, people
were hungry, so hungry that their stomachs growled. The markets
were empty. The smell of warm bread and roasting meat
(02:56):
had vanished. Hope was as hard to find as food.
Would help ever come or would the city of Samaria
stay locked in this terrible hunger forever? Here is where
we find you guessed it, Elisha. God had spoken to Elisha.
(03:20):
So Elisha shared this message of hope, which.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Said, here the word of the Lord. This is what
the Lord says about this time tomorrow, twelve pounds of
the finest flower will sell for a shekel, and twenty
pounds of barley also for a shekel. At the gate of.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Samaria, listeners, a shekel is an amount of money. It
would be like us saying a quarter or dollar. The
king stood there listening to Elijah's words, but he wasn't alone.
One of his top captains stood beside him. The captain frowned,
(04:03):
shaking his head. He just couldn't believe what Elisha was saying.
He crossed his arms and scoffed.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Even if God opened up the sky and poured down
food like rain, this could not happen.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
His voice was full of doubt, like someone refusing to
believe a tiny seed could grow into a giant tree.
You will see it with your own eyes, answered Elisha.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
But you will not eat any of it.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
God's message was saying that in twenty four hours, one day,
the food situation in Samaria would be completely reversed. Instead
of scarcity of hair would be abundance. Do you think
God's word that Elisha spoke, will come true. Yes, why
(05:09):
do you believe.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
That God keeps his promises?
Speaker 1 (05:15):
I agree with you. So let's see back to our story. Now,
there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of
the city gate. Leprosy is a skin disease. We just
heard how nay Men had this. Do you remember that
(05:36):
if you were sick with this, you weren't allowed around
others because they wanted to prevent others from catching it.
So the four men sadly sat outside the gate. The
hot sun beat down on them. The first leper, his
voice tinged with desperation, spoke an idea.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
I sit here until we die. If we enter into
the city, the famine is in the city and we
will die there. And if we just sit here, well.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
We'll also die.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
So let's just try to get going to the camp
of our enemy and surrender. If they spare us will live,
and if they kill us, well then we'll die.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Basically, he's saying, guys, we are in a tough place.
We don't have any good options, so let's just try
going to the enemy army, surrender and perhaps by a miracle,
we will live. Motivated by a mixture of fear and
(06:42):
faint hope. They agreed to this plan. They arose at twilight,
making their way to the Syrian army camp, their hearts
pounding with every step. Eye was still dark, with only
(07:02):
a faint glow creeping along the edge of the horizon.
The stars began to fade, and slowly the world stirred,
whispering that morning was on its way. As they neared
the camp, they prepared for the worst, each step a
(07:24):
silent prayer for mercy.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Sh quiet, now here we go, guys.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
They stepped into the enemy camp, expecting to be met
with swords and an army of menacing men, but they
found silence. No one.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Where are they?
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Uh? Maybe they went for a stroll.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Ugh, No, they wouldn't just leave their precious things unprotected.
Are we in the right place?
Speaker 1 (08:02):
This is definitely the place, but it makes no sense.
The camp was deserted, tense wide open fires still smoldering.
The army's fancy goods of gold and silver glittered untouched
(08:23):
in the twilight. Listeners, guess what happened? This is incredible.
The Lord caused the army to hear the sound of
chariots and horses. It sounded like a massive army. Hearing this,
they turned to each other and exclaimed, hey, gus. They
(08:49):
said to one another, ki oh no, look, the King
of Israel just paid the kings to come and.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Fight us on one every one.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
At once. They got up and fled, abandoning their tents,
horses and donkeys. They left the camp exactly as it was,
and in panic, ran for their lives. That's why the
four men find the camp empty. The men couldn't believe
(09:27):
their eyes as they hurried from one tent to another,
feasting on the abundance of food and dressing themselves in
splendid garments. They even hid some of the treasures silver,
gold and clothing. But as they enjoyed the big surprise feast,
(09:51):
they started to feel a little guilty in their hearts.
One of the lepers spoke up.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
What we're doing is not right. This is a day
of good news, and we are keeping it to ourselves.
If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's
go at once and report this to the king.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Feeling a new sense of duty, they went back to
the city. Before they felt sad and hopeless, but now
their hearts were full of purpose.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Come see the army is gone, and we have food.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
They called out to the gatekeepers, speaking words that seemed
too good to be true. The king was still doubtful
of this news, so he sent people to investigate, and
they did find that the news was in fact true.
The news spread like wildfire, and soon the gates of
(10:54):
Samaria opened. People ran out, their eyes full of hope.
The enemy was gone, and the terrible hunger was over all.
Because of God's power and kindness. He had used four
lepers to share their miraculous discovery of food. The whole
(11:14):
city rejoiced, feasting and celebrating this blessing from God through
the most unlikely messengers. Well that is it for our
story today. But before we go, let's think about what
we just heard. Did God say through Elisha that he
(11:39):
would change the famine? Yes? Yes, But did the captain
believe this? No? No, he doubted God because they were
surrounded by the enemy army. He thought the only way
that food could come to the city was from above.
(12:02):
This makes me think of Proverbs chapter three, verse five,
which says trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding. You see, he
forgot that God could provide food or anything in unexpected ways,
(12:26):
ways that we can't always understand. Now, when the four
lepers found the camp, what did they notice?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
It was empty?
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Yes? Why was it empty? God scaled them away? That's right?
See again, what an unexpected way. Once the four lepers
ate and enjoy the miracle God provided, what did they
decide to do tell the others? Yes, they understood that
(13:07):
to stay silent and to selfishly not share it would
be sinning. Remember, they knew that others had no food.
They chose to think of others, transforming their miraculous find
into a blessing for an entire city. Yeah, there is
(13:28):
a true joy found in sharing our blessings with others.
Tell me a time you shared your blessings from God
with someone. I'll wait. Sometimes I'll share my popsicle or
my ice cream with my brother. Thanks for sharing for
(13:48):
some of you. At first sharing me have been hard,
but then you realize, Wow, it actually feels good to share,
to see someone else helped and happy because of it.
This week, consider how you might share your blessings, big
(14:09):
or small with those around you, Whether it's a kind word,
a helping hand, or a shared toy. Every act of
generosity can point people back to God's goodness and power.
Well that is it for our story today. Thank you
(14:29):
so much for joining us. I'd like to give a
big thank you to today's guest, Chris Aiman of Kaleidoscope
Kids Bibles. He played the voice of one of our
lepers today. He's also the voice of the beloved mister
Chris on the Kaleidoscope Kids podcast and the founder of
Kaleidoscope Kids Bibles. We have some of their bibles and
have really enjoyed them. I'll link them in today's show notes.
(14:51):
Free to check them out. Thanks again everybody, and as always,
bye for now.
