John 4:1-16 & John 7:37-39

At Jacob’s well, Jesus surprises a Samaritan woman by asking for a drink and then offering her “living water”—not the cool well water she expected. Kids will hear the conversation they have as the woman is puzzled by Jesus’ words.

She is also shocked that even though He knew her past, He spoke kindly and welcomed her.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello again, and welcome back to kids' Bible stories. Today's
story is called more Than a Drink Living Water. This
comes from John chapter four, verses one through sixteen, and
John Chapter seven, verses thirty seven through thirty nine. Before
we dive into our story, let's talk about what a

(00:23):
well is, because it's part of this story. A well
is a deep, deep hole in the ground that people
dig or drill to reach water. I know how cool
is it, but if you dig down deep enough you
can get water pretty amazing well. Long ago, before pipes

(00:50):
and faucets, families came here to the well with buckets
to pull up fresh cool water to drink and cook with.
Wells were often the best spot in the village for
gathering and sharing news. Since everyone would have to go

(01:14):
there in order to draw water, you would run into
other people and talk about what's been going on.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Hi.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Oh, hello.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Now that you understand this, let's go ahead and start
today's story. One sunny afternoon, Jesus was walking from Judea

(01:47):
back up to Galilee. The road was dusty and hot,
and by the time he reached a town called Cigar
in Samaria, he was very tired. He sat down beside
an old stone well, the very same one Jacob had
given to his son Joseph many many years before. Just then,

(02:14):
a woman from Samaria walked up, carrying her clay jar.
It was around the sixth hour, so the sun was
high and the water in the well felt nice and cool.
She was here to draw water from the well. Jesus

(02:34):
looked at her and.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Said, give me a drink.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
You see, his disciples had gone away into the city
to buy food. The Samaritan woman gave him an odd look.
How is it that you, a Jew, asked for a
drink from me, a woman of Samaria? What does she mean? Well,

(03:07):
during that time, Jews didn't want much to do with Samaritans.
They kind of looked down upon them, and that's why
she's surprised that he's even talking to her. Okay, let's continue.
Jesus answered her.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
If you knew the gift of God and who it
is that is saying to you give me a drink,
you would have asked him and he would have given
you living water.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Her eyebrows drew together in a puzzled frown. Sir, living water.
You don't even have a bucket. This well is so deep.
Are you greater than our father Jacob. He gave us
the well and drank from it himself, as did his

(04:05):
sons and animals.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Jesus replied, everyone who drinks of this water will be
thirsty again. But whoever drinks of the water that I
give him will never be thirsty again. The water that
I give him will become in him a spring of
water welled up to eternal life.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
The late morning sun sparkled on the rippling surface of
the well. A warm breeze stirred the edge of the
woman's simple robe. You could hear the promise in Jesus's words.
Her voice trembled with hope, her eyes shone like drops

(04:55):
of dew on grass. The woman's sir, give me this
water so that I will not be thirsty or have
to come here to draw water again. Jesus said to.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Her, Okay, well, go call your husband and come back.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
She stared at the ground and replied, I have no husband.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
You're right, you have had five husbands, and the man
you now live with is not your husband.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Listeners, He's showing her that, even though they just met,
he knew all about her life. Jesus is God's son,
and he knows everything about us, even the things we
try to hide. Did this The woman told him, Sir,

(06:03):
I can see you are prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on
this mountain, But you say that Jerusalem is the place
to worship. Jesus gently responded.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Woman, believe me, a time is coming when you will
worship the Father. Neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know. We worship what
we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet

(06:41):
a time is coming, and has now come, when the
true worshippers will worship the Father in the spirit and
in truth, For they are the kind of worshipers The
Father seeks God. God is spirit, and his worshippers must
worship in the spirit and in truth.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Eyes wide and bright as polished as a ruby, she said,
I know the Messiah is coming, and when he comes,
he will explain everything to us. Tilting his head slightly,
the corners of his mouth turning upward in a gentle,

(07:29):
loving smile, Jesus.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Said, I.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
The one speaking to you, I am he.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
In that moment, the wind carried the scent of wildflowers
across the dusty path. The world around them the ancient
stone well, the rolling green hills in the distance, the
quiet murmur of the well. It all seemed to pause.

(08:08):
The Samaritan woman knew she had met the promised Messiah,
the Savior. Just then his disciples came back. They marveled
that he was talking with a woman, but no one asked,
why are you talking with her. The woman left her

(08:31):
water jar and ran into town, telling the people, come,
come quick and see a man he told me all
that I ever did. Can Can this be the Christ?
The people left the town and went to see Jesus. Well,

(09:03):
that is it for our story today. But before we go,
let's think about what we just heard. Tell me where
does a Samaritan woman meet Jesus. Well, yes, and Jesus

(09:23):
starts talking to her about water. Now, when you think
of water, tell me what do you think of a
like a cup of water? Thanks for sharing. She too,
thought that Jesus meant actual splush, splash water, water that

(09:47):
pours into a cup, or that you can wash the
dishes with. I understand why she was a bit confused,
But he means something else. Later in the Bible, in
John chapter seven, at a big festival, Jesus said.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Whoever is thirsty can come to me and drink.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
He wasn't handing out cups of water. He was talking
about the Holy Spirit.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Jesus said, whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,
rivers of living water will flow from within them.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
By this, he meant the spirit whom those who believed
in him would later receive. That's why the Samaritan woman
looked so puzzled. At first. She was expecting a bucket
of well water, but Jesus was offering her the Holy Spirit.

(10:57):
So whenever you think of living water, picture a sparkling
river inside your heart, not a cup, because Jesus gives
believers something far greater than anything we can hold in
our hand. The last thing I want you to notice

(11:23):
is how welcoming and kind he was to the woman,
even though Jesus already knew all about her life and
the mistakes that she'd made, the things that she felt
shame about. Did Jesus wag his finger at her or

(11:43):
tell her that she was horrible? No, No, Jos. Like
the woman at the well, all of us can come
to him with our mess ups, our sin. We can
say I'm I'm sorry, and he will welcome us forgive us,

(12:06):
so go to him anytime because he is our loving savior.
