Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello again and welcome back to Kids' Bible Stories. Today's
story is called the Same Me Wherever I Go. This
is part of our Back to School episode, Part two
and comes from Genesis chapter thirty nine. As many of
you know, I have recently asked for your help supporting
the podcast due to the ad changes, and I am
(00:21):
so grateful for you, my listeners. I saw God provide
for you, and I want to say thank you. Thank
you to some of our newest Patreon supporters, Isaiah and
Isabella Zing and Josie. I'd also like to thank those
who have given one time donations. Thank you Morgan Mitchell, Aarrah,
Aaron Mita and Bethany. Thank you to Jaden Mack, who
(00:45):
says he loves listening because it helps him understand God more, Jaden,
I love hearing that. Between all of you who have
given or joined the Patreon page, we are now up
to two hundred and sixty pang members on Patreon. That
plus your donations, gives this podcast a full eight months
of funding and helps us continue translating it to Spanish
(01:08):
for more children to hear. If you've been on the
fence about helping, know that we still have a goal
to hit five hundred paying Patreon supporters. That would be
a huge help. You'll get weekly bonus content for the episodes,
but also you are playing a critical part in keeping
this podcast alive for thousands and thousands of families who
(01:29):
listen to this every single day. Thank you to my
wonderful listeners who have helped me this possible. And if
you're interested, just check the link in today's show notes. Okay,
now let's jump into today's story. Today's episode includes an
adapted detail to respect the variety of ages who listen
(01:50):
while preserving the integrity of the story. I encourage parents
for you to go back and review the full scripture
reference in the show notes and explore it further with
your children in a way that fits your family's needs.
An age level, listeners, have you ever acted one way
at home and a different way at school. Maybe at
(02:16):
home you are kind and you speak a certain way,
but at school you say words you wouldn't say at
home because here you're trying to fit in. Or maybe
at church you sing the songs about Jesus, but at
recess you pretend you don't know him. Have you ever
(02:42):
done that before? It's okay to be honest. But did
you know God invites us to follow him everywhere we go,
whether it's at school, the park, grandma's house, or even
halfway across the word world. Today, we're going to hear
(03:05):
about someone who really knew what it meant to be
faithful no matter where he was. His name was Joseph.
Hey I know that name. Yeah, I bet many of
you do. But there's a few of them. Just like
at school, you might have two Sarahs or three Lawsons
(03:27):
in your class. They're all different people, but they have
the same name. That's the same thing that happens in
the Bible. Sometimes there are a few Josephs that you
hear about. So let's make sure that you know who
it is. This is not the Joseph that you know
of from Joseph and Mary. This is a Joseph all
(03:52):
the way back in the Old Testament who had a
big family. Let's go ahead and begin our story here
and you'll know who I'm talking about. Joseph was one
of twelve brothers, but something awful happened to him. Some
(04:20):
of you may have remembered Joseph's story from our earlier episodes.
Say out loud if you remember what happened. I'll wait.
Thanks for sharing. Well, let's make sure everyone is filled in.
Here's what happened in Joseph's life. Joseph's brothers were so
(04:42):
jealous of him. I'm so part of our brother Yeah,
which do boys that they did something terrible? They sold
Joseph as a slave. Yeah. He was taken far, far
away to a land called Egypt. No parents, no brothers,
(05:08):
surrounded by many who didn't believe in God. He was
all alone? Or was he? The Bible tells us that
even though Joseph was in a strange land, God was
with him. Now, Joseph had to work for a man
(05:30):
named Potiphar, an important official in the king's army. See
Potiphar bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
The Lord was with Joseph, so that he prospered, and
he lived in the house of his Egyptian master, Potiphar.
(05:53):
Joseph worked hard, He cleaned, he carried things, He helped
with the animals. Whatever needed doing, Joseph did it well.
When Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph and
that the Lord gave him success and everything he did,
(06:15):
he liked Joseph so much that he put him in
charge of his whole house. That's a big job. Joseph
was in charge of the other workers, the food, the animals, everything.
Can you imagine being in charge of an entire house.
(06:37):
That's a lot of responsibility. From the time he put
him in charge of his household and of all that
he owned, the Lord blessed Potiphar's house because of Joseph.
The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had,
both in the house and in the field. So Potiphar
(07:00):
he left everything he had in Joseph's care. With Joseph
in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except
the food he ate. Well. One day, Joseph was doing
his work, maybe he was counting all of the oil
(07:22):
and grain, making sure nothing ran out. When Potiphar's wife
approached him, Hey, hey, Joseph, she whispered. The woman was
trying to get Joseph to disobey God and do something
(07:44):
he knew was not right, but he refused.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
With me in charge, he told her, Potiphar does not
concern himself with anything in the house. Everything he owned,
he hasn't trusted to my care, so no, I can't
do something so wrong. My master trusts me. Even more important,
(08:13):
I would be sinning against God.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he
refused to go along with her terrible plan. Even in
this new land, even in this new house and a job,
Joseph chose to be faithful and follow God. He didn't
change who he was or who he followed. Even when
(08:44):
no one else was watching, Joseph stayed true to God.
Potiphar's wife once again tried to get Joseph to do
something he knew was wrong. Joseph could tell this was
big trouble. He didn't argue because he didn't even wait around.
(09:06):
He dropped what he was doing and ran out of
the house as fast as he could. When Joseph ran away,
Potiphar's wife got angry. She told a lie about Joseph
and said he did something he didn't do, and just
like that, Joseph was thrown into prison. Wait a minute,
(09:31):
but Joseph did the right thing. He did, but doing
the right thing doesn't always mean will be noticed or rewarded.
It's not always rainbows and butterflies. This is another reason
why I love the Bible. It's honest about how life
can be hard sometimes, but we can be encouraged because
(09:54):
God still sees us doing the right thing. Okay, back
to our story. So Joseph sat there in prison. But
guess what, even in prison, even when things were really unfair,
(10:17):
God was still with Joseph. The Lord showed him kindness
and gave him favor with the prison guard. Joseph didn't
get bitter or mean. He didn't give up. He still
worked hard, he still chose to do the right thing.
(10:38):
And just like before, Joseph was put in charge again,
this time in the prison. The prison guard didn't pay
attention to anything under Joseph's care because the Lord was
with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. Well,
(11:07):
that is it far story today. But before we go,
let's think about what we just heard. I must tell
you that Joseph's story has an incredible ending. It doesn't
end here in prison. If you've never read it, you
can find our Joseph series episodes or read the rest
(11:29):
of it in your Bible with your parents. It's a
really beautiful story. Okay, I need your help answering out loud.
Was Joseph the same person which means did he change
how he acted in Egypt? No? What about when he
(11:52):
was in Potiphar's house? No? What about in prison? Now
that's right. Joseph faithfully followed God no matter where he was.
He didn't change who he was to fit in. He
didn't change just because life was hard or people were unfair.
(12:14):
He stayed faithful and trusted God. Can you think of
a time when you were tempted to do something wrong,
maybe at school or with a friend. What helped you
make the right choice. I'll pause while you share it
with your family, because sometimes it's dangerous. I don't do
(12:41):
because am I getting trouble? And I don't like lying.
Thanks for sharing. Joseph reminds us that even when no
one is watching, God is even when people are unfair,
God is still with you, and doing what's right is
(13:06):
always better than doing what's easy. So as you begin
your new school year, when you're in your classroom, or
on the playground, or even home with your family, be
the same you everywhere. Be the kind, brave, honest and
(13:30):
loving child that God made you to be. As you
follow him, I know he will be right there with you.
Thank you so much for joining us on this week's episode, kids,
I am praying for you as you start your new
school year. Whether you homeschool or you're going to preschool
(13:52):
or or fifth grade, I have been praying for you.
Tune in next week for a new episode, and as always,
bye for now.
