t Angels, the tea.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
We are the tea. We'll get into that in a minute.
We're still shooting today. What's that song?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
The Shooties with the shootings and when we have an
interview it's called the shoot Around. Oh yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
We're just coming up with things on the phone.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm a hot girl. I get anything I want. This
is my world.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I make big moves in my big hus since I
take them.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
I was born. I'm in a big two. I'm in Miami, bitch.
I'm in Miami, bitch. That's where on my coast? What's that?
I don't know. It sucks. Watching basketball on the East
Coast is terrible. It's the worst.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah yeah, well, I mean it's the m NBA.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
The m NBAA. So watching the WABA during in the
East Coast is actually fine.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Actually it's just the m the It's just the the m.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Good news is good news is I don't know if
I've said this on the pod, but I've got a
new tagline for us and it starts right now. Summertime
is for the Girls. That's MMBA is over, m NHL
is over. It is time for the ladies, Baby, the ladies.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
It's for the girls, and for the girls who are
for the girls.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
True shout out to Shelley from Love Island Anyway, welcome
to let her shoot the podcast. We it's not just
a tagline anymore. It's not just a tagline anymore. The
podcast that covers swimmen's sports with no fucking kid gloves. Baby,
it's not a baby bird egg something to be protected,
something to be respected. It's not something that needs to
(01:52):
be protected. It's something that needs to be respected. Oh
my god, Sarah bars all the reasons to stay locked in.
Sarah Chovnik. Two time Emmy Award winning producer, trist To Craig,
zero time Emmy Award winning talent Allie. Three coasts. He's
been to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Miami at only
(02:14):
five months old. Anyway, we are here only two coasts.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Technically, there's only two coasts in America.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
That's fair. I knew that when I was saying it.
It was gonna get shipped for that, and that's all good,
no problem. I got a tan, So you can't hold
me down. You can't hold me down. All right, so
let's get into the tea.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Let's get into the tea. We are the T.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
We we are the T.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
And for anyone who's launching and doesn't know what we're
talking about, but we got aggregated this week. Well, our
last week's episode caused a little bit of a rocket
whit caused a little bit of a ruckus in the
sports world. We're you know, we talk about wanting to
be disruptors, and that's what it seems that we have done,
(03:02):
is we have disrupted a bit of the women's sports space.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
What's crazy is when Angel mccattrey came on the podcast,
she had all these great things to say that I
thought the conversation was awesome. I thought she warmed up
in a really brilliant and organic way, shared things about
the sport and stories, etc. That I thought was like, Okay,
this is really nice. It's a great first guest. We
(03:28):
posted a clip about Angel talking about the state of
the WNBA, which is reliant on marketability. I don't really
need to tell you what the clip said because you
probably already know. So we posted to Instagram and its
caption is or text on screen is you know, does
cloud matter or is cloud getting WNBA players drafted or
(03:51):
something to that effect. So it goes on, it goes on,
the pod goes on, the clips, and it gets like to.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Be clear, to be clear, And so if there is
anyone that listening for the first time and didn't hear
this clip, which I'd be surprised about, but let's just recap.
The line that seemed to bother people was the first
line of the c.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
And the first line was if Hailey van Lyth, Chicago
sky guard who played at Louisville where Angel mccattrey played,
which I think was a reason that it caused a
lot of problems, played at LSU, played at TCU, awesome guard,
one Conference Player of the Year this last year. But
she's dating an NBA player. She was on the cover
(04:31):
of Sports Illustrated. She's a marketability sort of monster, and
she said, for example, if Hailey van Lyth had ten
thousand followers, would she have been drafted to the league?
Speaker 1 (04:43):
And that wasn't I mean that that was a point
that was made in the statement, but it was not
the point of the conversation we had.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Well, and to be fair, when you keep going on
the quote, she is taught she does mention in scale
and like her talent level. And so that part I
think was, you know, made people a little bit upset.
And but the point is that if it's a jump ball,
if it's fifty to fifty, marketability matters, just like it
mattered for lebron James's son, Bronnie James, when he ended
(05:17):
up getting drafted to the LA Lakers. But nobody cared
about that. Nobody was getting up in arms about that.
It's okay. So the clip goes up, gets like a
decent amount of views for us, you know, for our
little pod, eighty thousand first day, second day, something like that.
I get a call from Angel and Angel's like, hey,
there's got a lot of views in this, like I'm
(05:38):
not sure if I even should collaborate on this. And
I was like, it's fine, it's not a big deal.
There's only eight thousand views, like eight hundred cheers, it's
not And she's like, Trista, that's kind a lot. I said, no, no, no,
that's for news. That's nothing, okay. So later on that night,
I see Yahoo Sports on Twitter post that to their
(06:00):
page and I said, oh boy, oh we've now been aggregated.
S I posts it, The Mirror posts it. Angel is
quite clearly a little shook up because I don't think
older w NBA players are used to ever being aggregated.
Why because it doesn't matter what you say. Back when
(06:21):
she was drafted, nobody cares enough to aggregate you. Nobody
cares enough to put it on local radio. No, nobody cares.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
It's not it's not a hot enough take. It's not
a it's not enough opinion to be taken into the
ether at that point, right right, because it's it's a
commonly shared opinion.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Well, it depends, depends not.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
I'm not talking about our opinion. I'm talking about it
in general women's sports. Yes, general typically doesn't get into
the aggregation.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yeah, because the comments that are made are typically pretty tepid.
You know, we'll see how it goes. She's a great player,
nobody's nobody says, listen, if she never following, she wouldn't
be in the league. And shout out to us for
not making it go more and more crazy because I
could have asked a lot more questions, a lot more
(07:13):
follow ups. But so six and a half million views
later on Yahoo, I don't know where it is everywhere
else angel Is in London. She had to walk, well,
she didn't have to, but she chose to walk. The
comments back to a degree because probably the smoke of
those who were reaching out to her and we made
(07:34):
traditional journalists pretty mad. There was a lot of local WNBA,
the conglomerate, the machine that we're like, this podcast is trash.
So thank you, yeah, and so thank you.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I appreciate that. And if we're pissing people off, then
we're doing the great thing. I mean, I think in
some terms, because this goes back to why we started
Let Her Shoot and we started Daily w begin with,
which was that women's sports, we felt a han are
too often times handled as if a as if women's
(08:12):
sports just deserves a participation trophy for being there, right, Like, yes,
it's the athletes are there, therefore we celebrate them.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
It's like title nine. It's really like just oh, well,
you know, we we'll just talk about it like it's
like it's a charity.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
We've talked about this before. Right, there's a there's a
level of ooh, can't say that because women are too sensitive.
They can't they can't handle the truth, they can't handle criticism,
they can't h and I think that statement in and
of itself that women are too fragile for criticism and
fragile for critique is a misogynistic statement.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Well, and I don't even think it's that. I mean,
I think it's that's part of it. But at the
point that kept getting made erroneously in the comments was
women are always trying to women down, Women are always
bringing women jealousy. Criticism is hate, criticism is jealousy, And that,
to me is the fact that I can't have a pointed,
(09:15):
direct opinion about the game of basketball that women play
and I can about the men's game, and that men
try to stifle what we have to say about other
women and only want it to be positive is in
my opinion, inherently misogynistic and inherently gaslighting me into thinking
(09:37):
that I'm not helping the women's game grow, when in fact,
all I want to do is build the game. All
we want to do is grow the game. So I
find that to be quite bullshit, and I don't think
that many people are even thinking about it like that,
because we've been conditioned to lift each other up only
because we believe that the world is always sort of
(10:02):
marginalizing women in sports. But I think progress is really
being able to say, like, is hi of them at
the WYA player? Is she that caliber player right now?
And maybe she is?
Speaker 1 (10:12):
And maybe that's what is proven wrong to us, And
then we eat our words and we say we were wrong.
The word jealous, the word petty, the word hate.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Those are misogynistic terms, not usistic terms in women in
men's sports. And in fact, I've had a lot of
men's takes that have gone totally sideways, and nobody was like, trust,
you're so you're so jealous of him, Oh, you're so petty.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
You're just jealous that he has all this success. And
it's like no, or are you not jealous?
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Or she has accomplished more in sports than you ever have,
So what can you say? Well, if that was the case,
I wouldn't be able to talk about sports at all,
because all of these athletes are elite and have accomplished
a lot more than me. And then we could only
have Hall of famers talking about the game, which we
know isn't great commentary for a variety of different reasons.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
That all the headline, I mean, the headlines of this
itself of her statement.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Were like WNBA stars, Yes, obliterated.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
There's a part Haley van Lift, and it's like she
didn't tear her apart. She asked a question, She posed
a question, a question that you know, no one has
a definitive answer on. You know, we saw this weekend
Hailey Van Left played twenty two minutes in the game
this weekend, and she scored four points. As a point guard.
You have to be able to look at that and say,
(11:36):
Chile had four points.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
What are you saying about that in a game that
they got destroyed by the Phoenix Mercury. I really wish
and I'm not in charge of, obviously what Angel was
gonna do, and neither of you, and like, whatever feels
she feels comfortable saying, she feels comfortable saying, but I
really wish that she didn't feel like she needed to
walk those statements back. Because there's a lot of people
(12:01):
that are really smart about basketball, people who are really
not close but professionally close to Haley that are asking
these same questions saying, Hey, like I did X, Y
and Z, I've worked with her on this and that,
and I ask myself whether Haley is a WNBA player
(12:22):
or not, or if she should be over in Europe
or whether she needs to work on her game and
that the other way. So these are questions happening behind
the scenes or conversations happening behind the scenes, but everybody
just seems a little bit scared of having them on WAX.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
It's interesting too, because if you notice, there are certain
players in the WNBA one on Haley vanlists team, specifically
Angel Reese, that people have no problem in commenting she's
not a WNBA player, she's not worthy of a team,
she's not worthy of a roster spot.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
And quote unquote was only on a team because she
was on the cover of voguings because she did this
to Caitlin Clark Wackin.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
It's like they can say it about the person that
they've deemed appropriate to say it about, but not the
person that they've deemed is protected. Because Hailey Vanlyth has
a great story, which is true, Hailey Vanlyff does have
a great story. Hailey Vanlyth was a baller in college.
Also true, Hailey van Lyth was a baller in college.
But we say this about the m sports all the time.
(13:22):
How many times do we look at college quarterbacks and
we go, yeah, they won three championships. But they're also
too small, their arms not strong enough, they're not quick
enough on their feet, they can't throw out of the pocket,
and that's issues that you have developing a quarterback in
the NFL, And no one sits there and goes, oh,
so you just hate them and you're jealous of their
(13:44):
success here. And I have a question, Trista, had that
SoundBite been made by Pat McAfee, do you think it
would have had the same commentary on it of jealousy, pettiness,
and hate.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Yeah. If Pat McAfee said that about Hailey van Lyth,
I think I would just be shocked that a guy
on his men's platform was in the weeds that much
about a player who was really popular in college on
a team that's struggling and has three wins and gave
up a future first round draft pick that's going to
be top three because there's this bad on a guard
(14:20):
who can barely get into the rotation. And I am
not going to back down because I believe that Hailey
van Lyth, although she's a phenomenal college player, I don't
know necessarily if Hailey van Lyth in any other environment,
in any other situation other than the Chicago Sky because
she played with Angel Reese before, would be on a team,
(14:42):
I don't know. And I'm not saying she's not deserving
it being on a team, but I don't know if
she would be. And I'm not walking that shit back
because I've been in this business a long time. You're
ten does two, I'm ten does down. I'm ten toes
down on my takes. You're not getting me to fucking apologize.
And also, I don't like the way that people on
her team that are close to Haley are in the
comments like keep Haley Van Lift's name out your motherfucking mouth.
(15:04):
I don't like that shit. Why because nobody's saying that
about lebron James. Nobody's saying that about Bronnie James, nobody's
saying that about other NBA players, m NBA players. They
don't get that. Like it's kind of like like a
little it's giving a little crash out, it's giving a
little like the fans that are protecting Hailey van Lift
are almost making my point, our point, Angel's point exactly.
(15:26):
The only reason you're writing for her at Dawn like
this is because you like her that much and she's
that marketable.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
You don't mean to be clear, you don't mean Sky teammates.
You need people on Hailey's actual marketing.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Marketing style.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Yeah, all that there was. And I'm not gonna name
names because I'm not gonna be shady, but there was
a sky player Delicious liked Langdon followed us after.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
That, so delicious. Speaking of Delicious though, speaking of Delicious,
did you see what happened over the weekend? Did you see?
Did you see it?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
As I thought?
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Asy posted a photo to her story. It wasn't It
wasn't fugazy who fugazy? It wasn't fugazy. It was all
easy posting this to her own page. This was not AI,
This was not check Gipt, This was not great a
photo shop baby. This was aisy fun. What did she posted?
(16:26):
Her story? Sarah?
Speaker 1 (16:27):
She posts, first of all, I love the way as
he plays with the fans. This is my first This
is like one of my favorite things about her, other
than the fact that she's an absolute baller. She she
posts a story. In the story, she's taking a selfie
and mirror selfie and it's like she tangs.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
I think she's like in a dresser dressing room getting
her hair. She's like getting her hair done, like she
doesn't know what she's doing, Like she doesn't know what
she's doing, and.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
She posts it and she's like hair day or whatever
it is. But the phone case is what catches everyone's
eye because on the phone case you see Paige Becker's girlfriend.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
We we we alert alert. Asy Fudd posted a photo
that clearly says on the back page Beckers's girlfriend and
full stop not friend, that's a girl. We have been
we have been postulating, we have been sort of hypothesizing,
(17:28):
we've been rumoring, we've been just in their business. And
it was so.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Stark.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
It was such a statement that even Cosmopolitan, which I
don't think was fair, said asy Fudd, confirms that her
and Page Beckers are in a relationship.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Well, so there's that. There's that side, yeah, But then
you had the ESPN side, which said the best they went,
they went sportsmanship at its finest they did. That was
the direction they went. They were like, we just love
these call much teammates, and it.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Was like, look at this cute duo. We love this.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Our social media Sam posted a comment on that that
got like four thousand likes. Someone's the top liked comment
on that ESPN post that just said they're lesbian Stacy.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
They're lesbian Stacy.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
It's like people are like, is this the hard launch,
and it's like, we've had like eight hard launches at
this point. Do you think Asy is just getting.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Honestly, is like literally, you know, I am tired of
giving you guys breadcrumbs. I bet you, because here's the thing.
I think you could even get Asy posting from bed
with Page and it's like her in her bra and
on in her broad and underwear, and Page is sleeping
because you know, Page is not opting into this photo
(18:52):
op and then it's like, then you're gonna get ESPN.
This duo has a sleepover, roommates reunite again. It's like,
what does she need to do? What does she need
to do in order for us to get the gist?
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Do you think that as got this custom made? Or
do you think she went on Etsy searched Paige Becker's
phone cover, found one and hit by and now just
has like the same phone cover as like five hundred families.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
I think the meaning of it is easier to find
to bend over backwards to say they're not together and
that this is just like a cute joke that they're
landing into. If that already was available for purchase, if
you have to make it, if you have to make
it custom, it's a rap. If there's already one, and
(19:47):
you're like, ha ha ha, look at this. Everybody thinks
we're together. That's what people are gonna say. Oh, everybody
thinks here together. She's just playing into it. She's gen Z.
They're lesbian, Stacy, they're lesbian. The most log you conclusion
is probably typical delusion. We don't need to be like, well,
what if she was just doing this and da da
da da da. All right, let's move on to some
(20:10):
real basketball.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Speaking of Page, fastest player in the w to two
hundred points, fifty rebounds, and fifty assists, I think I
think probably rookie of the years Pages.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
She's done it very quietly, which I think is really
what's interesting about her game this year. You know, Dallas
is not good, we know that they're not winning games,
but she is quietly putting up record numbers without this
monster splash about it, which I think I think is
a really good mark for Page going forward, and really
(20:45):
just kind of showing what type of player she's gonna
what type of contributor she's going to be. What comparison
would you make right now to somebody else in the league,
and what kind of role they play on their team,
and what Page will give, whether it's Dallas for any
future team that takes her.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
I think probably Page to me, and I haven't thought
about this until just now, so this is off the
top of my head. Page to me, the closest player
that's in the league right now is probably Sabrina because
I'm gonna say Sabrina, Yeah, because Sabrina can do a
lot of different things. Remember Sabrina had has had triple
(21:26):
doubles as well. I saw her actually get her first
triple double against the Aces, and that's what you and like.
She has very quiet performances as well. You can get
Sabrina having a thirty seven point game and you're like,
I don't really remember any of the buckets, And that's
I think what Page has been doing outside of that
thirty five point game against the Mercury where they posted
it on the highlights. But you're like, twenty points against
(21:48):
the against the Mystics, twenty nine and seven with one steel,
one block against the Sun twenty one two seven, two
steals against the Valkyries twenty points, four rebounds, two assists,
four steals, two blocks. So she's doing a little bit
of everything on the floor. And even though she's not taking,
you know, thirty shots like Aricae would you know, she's
(22:10):
only shooting some somewhere between seventeen and twenty points per
twenty times per game. She's very, very efficient, less efficient
than she has been in college, but she's sort of
figuring it out. But yeah, i'd say quiet performer and
like an all around player that could do a little
bit of everything.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
I'm not as quiet performer, but Caitlin Clark she's been
in a little bit of I hate to call it
a slump because it's only been two games, but she's
one of seventeen in three point shots in the last
two games. I mean, is there cause for concern here
or is this just is this a lingering effect of
(22:47):
the calf strain? Is this what are we looking at?
Speaker 2 (22:50):
I think what it was is that, by the way,
right now, calf strains are not really to be fucked with,
They're just not.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
We saw that pop last night and.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Tyrese Haliburton is one of page. I mean one of
Caitlin Clark's best friends. They both play in Indiana. Kaitlyn's
dealing with the calfstrain. Tyre's s Aliburton was dealing with
the cafstrain. So I think they brought her back a
little bit earlier than I would just because of the
Commissioner's Cup and now they're going to be playing in
the Commission's Cup final, so I think that's a part
of it. I think the fact that she came out
(23:22):
on fire right away is part of it. But even
in those two games, she's averaging fifteen points per game,
five rebounds per game, and tennis is per game. It's
really the turn.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
She's still finding a way.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
It's the turnovers. They're really bad, and her three point
percentage is really bad, as you just noticed. But before
those games, though, before those two games, she was averaging
twenty five points per game, five rebounds per game, eight
assists per game, and shooting fifty five percent from three.
So it's just not it's a story, and it's definitely
something that she has to clean up. But I really
(23:53):
wonder if there's we'll see. But my question is is
this raw? Sure the right roster for her and and
for this team to succeed. The Fever have very high
highs and very low lows. They just lost to the Valkyries,
which was a really bad one, and Kayla Clark was
(24:13):
zero for seven on three, three for fourteen from the field,
putting up just eleven points. So it's just been a
tough go for her since that game against the Connecticut Sun,
which was, by the way, all that was.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
That was a wild game. I mean it started with
the I mean it was. It was an all game
back and forth and Ja c Sheldon and Kaylyn Clark
go back all the way to college and they're their
relationship has never been it seems.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
It has not been good.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
It's not been good.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
It's Kaylyn's put hands on jac multiple times before.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
And and Caitlyn seems like someone who I'm not going
to say she's a grudge holder.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
She's definitely a grudge holder. She remember what Caitlyn, Okay,
real quick, because this is not the point of this segment.
Caitlin Clark is gonna go down as one of the
most petty, petty, a disrespectful, flopper, physical like fiery competitive
(25:19):
assholes to ever grace the game of the WNBA. She
will go down as the goat in many categories and
I think she will challenge Diana Tarassi for that medal.
And I don't know. Dinah Tirossi was very well liked
in the league and just not when they were playing
against one another. And I'm very curious to see how
(25:39):
this is going to go in Caitlyn's full career. But
she's she's like, does not give a fuck. She looked
at jac Sheldon, and Jace Sheldon was like, you can't
do that, and she said, I can do the over
the fuck I want to do. She's pushing her, she's
pushing her off. You had Maria Maybury, who like friend
of the Pod, really wanted on the pod hip checks Kaitlyn, well,
Kaylyn checking out whether she lost an eyeball, and Lily
(26:03):
she's just like trying to get herself together and she's
boom on the floor.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
But was that a flop? Was that a hip check
a flop?
Speaker 2 (26:11):
It could have been flopped, and there was other flops
earlier in that game. She's a robust flopper. A robust flopper,
it's one of her greatest traits. And let's be honest,
some of the best players in all of sports history.
Understand that there is a time for the flop.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
We see end of the men's game all the time.
I mean there's tons of tons of players. I mean,
who would you say.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Is the most right now? Shake Gella. Just Alexander is
considered a foul merchant. He just won a title for
the m NBA last night. You got Draymond Green, who's
a crazy flopper. I mean Lebron James. Lebron James is
like known as like one of the biggest floppers in
all of history. So yeah, I mean this is just
what it was. But on top of Caitlin Clark and
(26:56):
her antics, I thought Sophie Cunningham's was even more interesting
because they they got that cute little white girl on
their team. See what I did. They're cute little white
girl on their team. It's not a racist term. And
she's there not to be Magabarbie, not to be a
part of tres Lechase, but to use her black belt.
(27:16):
I don't give a fuckness and just choke bitches out
and said literally decided to just karate chop Jace Sheldon
for coming after the face of the league, which is
what she said, and we'll play that in a second.
But then after Jacey Sheldon gets up, she chokes her out,
chokes her out and says like, do something about it,
do something about it, do something, do something. Why don't
(27:38):
you do something?
Speaker 1 (27:39):
I texted you and I said, all right, hear me out.
Did soothe cunning him get hotter with that? Because yes,
I'm not gonna lie. I watched that and I went.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Okay, and then wore the tress Lecha shirt afterwards.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
And then we're the I mean, I gotta give it
to her because her jersey sold out. That her jersey
sold out. She held the back of jay Z's neck
down and was like, what are you gonna do about it?
And I was like, oh my.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
God, No, she definitely got hotter. I'm not like a
big I think the maga really holds her back. But
and like maybe I think that, like the alleged homophobia
also holds her back. But just from Afar, I would say,
choking someone out to protect your teammate, boost you, boost
you up a little, Sophie Cunningham, smash your pass.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
Here's the thing. Here's the thing. Here's the thing, Sophie Cunningham.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
It's at one word answer, is it smash or is
it pass?
Speaker 1 (28:45):
It's smash, It's smash, It's smash. Liberty. The Liberty are
They've champs three, the defending champs, they've now lost three,
but more importantly, they've lost John cull Jones to answer,
looked what looked like it was going to be something
really ugly. I was worried it was acl I was
(29:05):
worried it was high ankle. I was worried it was
something that was gonna have her out the whole season.
It seems to be it's something that is going to
be manageable. She'll be back in four weeks. But how
much of a concern is this for the Liberty heading
into really a thick part of the schedule and not
having John Quelling all three losses.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Well, also they have issues because Sabrina and I and
escu Escu also had some lower back tightness right before
the Storm game, so she was out, so they had
they had multiple starters that were out in that game.
Feebitches out due to EuroBasket, Sabrina out day to day,
John Quell out right and then at one point and
(29:47):
I think right now it's the case the Liberty are
just down in nine active players. That is not good.
And they've they've lost the fever. How do we even well,
that's the deal. Like when you only have a roster
spot of eleven to go down and you can't really
figure out a way to replace them, that's kind of
the problem here. So they've lost in the storm and
(30:08):
they lost the few they lost to the Mercury, and
you've got these issues for the next month with John
Quell and they held their like they held their level
without John Quell before, and she missed a few games.
I think it's bad. I think you want to be
able to like get through the schedule, have guy, have
galas healthy and like know what you have. You knew
(30:32):
you were going to be out of Feebich was gonna
be out due to euro Basket. I think this is
just a time to like figure some things out and
maybe test some things experiment. The thing you probably don't know,
Sarah is that Sandy Brondelo in the Liberty, outside of
last year, have always started really slow. So the fact
they started off ten and zero and were just like
(30:52):
on fire, beating teams by twenty points per game, that's
very unusual for this team. Now, you would like to
see a champion kind of like use that momentum and
not fall off like we saw the Aces do last year.
But I think it's just an opportunity for them to
get healthy and uh and I don't think it's a
huge deal in terms of like their title hopes. The
(31:16):
Valkyries are uh, put your visa up. Put your visa,
U put your visa up.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
The Valkyries. I mean they're doing well out there, and
in a way that I mean, if I remember correctly,
you were like, the Valkyries aren't gonna win a game.
And I feel like I have to call you out
on that right now.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
No, I mean that's what that's what accountability looks like.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
You said they were great. I mean they're They've won
seven games now.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
V up v up accountability time. I thought this was
team was gonna be horrible, and you did.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
You were very loud about that.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
It hurts me. It makes me sick to have to
eat my words. No, the fact that they built this
roster and the way they did, the way that they
they lost players that they drafted. They didn't have anybody
in the first round. They got rid of Tryan Sellers,
they got Kaitlyn Chen, the other girl used to just
brought her back though used to Yo Yochiedah has gone
(32:16):
over to Lithuaniana. Was like, what are they doing over there?
They don't make any damn sense. Natalie Nicassi, the head coach,
was getting killed and then they were like pesky right,
And I was like, oh, well, maybe this is just
a fun team that will sell out games because they
play where the Golden State Warriors play it and there's
a huge fan base. They're making a lot of money.
Is this just like kind of a fun expansion story?
(32:38):
Now they're seven and six. They beat the Fever. Their
their record in general in terms of who they've beaten,
they beat the shit out of the Aces, which, like
I'm not that's not saying anything, but listen, there's not
that many good teams in the WNBA. Who else have
they beaten? They beat the Storm by six home, that's huge.
(33:01):
They beat the Sparks, like I said, they beat the
Aces ninety five to sixty eight. This is a team
that has hung tough with the Liberty only lost to
them by five. So when you look at them, you say, wow,
it's a team full of six women. You know, like
the first man off the bench first women off the bench,
and that's what they all have, and even with four
(33:21):
players gone to euro Basket, they still beat the hell
out of a fever as twelve point underdogs. I'm sorry, Natalie,
you probably should win Coach of the Year.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
I mean, that does seem I mean for an expansion team,
for a new team to come in and have a
lot of doubts on the decisions they were making, to
come out and perform this way. I mean, and they're
not into real contender status, but they're also not into
what the fuck are we watching status? Like, and they're
from Dallas. If I were the Sky you know, so
(33:54):
I think that's they play hard earning that credit.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Yeah, they're in every game. They've got the best or
one of the best home court advantages in the WNBA.
They're calling it balhlla balhalla.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
By the way, it's just great. The way that they've
done it is a blueprint. And I hate to say
this because I was just so wrong. The way they've
done it is a blueprint for expansion teams like Portland
and Toronto in the future. So we'll just move forward
to something better like the NWSL.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
I was about to say that was gonna be my segue,
but I do want to talk about a couple of
things that are going on in the NWSL right now.
The Spirit signed Italian Sofia Contori from Juventus on a
three year deal with a option for twenty twenty eight,
making her the first Italian player in the NWSL, which
is nice. She'll be eligible to start July first, after
(34:48):
the transfer window. The Spirit could use her. They've you know,
they're kind of hanging on. They're still up there. They're
still winning games, but they're dropping games they shouldn't. They're
getting shut out by teams they shouldn't. So, you know,
it'll be interesting to see her contribution to the team.
There's been you know, Riley Tiernan still you know, making
(35:09):
her name. I'm really excited to see what happens. I'm
really excited to see her get a couple more opportunities
on the national team. Lily Real has from Gotham FC.
She's really impressed in her first pro season and has
been invited to her first camp for the national team.
But I really want to talk about and I really
hate to say the sentence in Women's Sports podcast, I
(35:32):
want to talk about Patrick mahomes Well.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Really, it's even more disgusting, it's even more discussing on that.
It's you want to talk about Brittain, Patrick and Brittany.
You want to talk about Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
And and I'm gonna sit here and I'm gonna be
honest with you. I have I've never been a super
team Mahomes in terms of on the NFL side. However,
I have to give them the credit because there are
a lot of celebrities who are getting into the women's
(36:06):
sports space right now, right in an ownership role, in
a money donation role, and there's a lot of people
kind of grabbing the coattails of women's sports success right now.
But I find that the Mahomes are not just grabbing
the coattails. They are leading the charge for women's sports success.
When it comes to celebrity endorsement and celebrity money. They
(36:28):
just donated two hundred and seventy five million dollars, or
not donated. They invested two hundred and seventy five million
dollars into both the case current and the broader NWSL
infrastructure and in its future. And that includes one hundred
and forty million dollars towards their stadium and developing their
(36:52):
training facility and a developmental deal around the stadium. But
keep in mind, this is one hundred and forty million
dollars on top of what was already created as the
first ever women's sports stadium, women's soccer stadium solely in
the United States, solely dedicated to women's sports. They had
already made this insane facility that we actually documented as
(37:15):
part of a documentary series we did a couple of
years ago on the current and it was already state
of the art. They are putting their money where their
mouth is in terms of investment in women's sports and
the growth of women's sports.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
What they're going to do to is make a shitload
of money from the stadium they're probably gonna have. I mean,
it just shows you that they are on the cutting
edge in terms of like how they think women's sports
can help build their portfolios too. It's not just we
think that this is important because we want to grow
the game. Is we think that this is the best
(37:51):
place to put our money to invest in as well.
And that, like you said, is after the valuation of
the team went from seventy five men million to two
hundred and seventy five million in one year. In one year,
that's insane.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
It's to add two hundred million dollars in one year.
Not to mention, their team is undefeated right now. So
it's not just oh, we're investing in, you know, for
a vanity project. It's like we're investing and we're also
creating a dynasty while we're doing it, which is who
would be cool?
Speaker 2 (38:27):
I think who would be the male version of Taylor
Swift that could date a Kansas City current player, like
a celebrity. Yeah, so, like we saw the Kansas City
Chiefs become a.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
To be a male equivalent, why can't it be a
female equivalent?
Speaker 2 (38:47):
It could be also a female equivalent.
Speaker 1 (38:49):
They're lesbians.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Stacy there, lesbian Stacy listen, lesbians.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
That's a good question. Let me think. I first of all,
if I don't see Travis and Taylor at a current game,
like here.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Soon they you know, they canceled.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
I'm not, no, they're not canceled, but like I feel
like I need to see a little bit of you know,
the Rock.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Adrian says the Rock. Yeah, but he's old now, he
is kind of old old. That'd be a little Petoe.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
What about what about what's the guy from top Gun,
the really hot one? Oh?
Speaker 2 (39:28):
Yeah, what's his name? Hot guy top Gun?
Speaker 1 (39:31):
No, not Miles Teller.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
The other one, Yeah, the one that's really hot. Glen Powell.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Glenn Powell.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
He's got a horrible name, but I think I don't
think he's like big enough.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
Blen Powell's my guy crush.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Who is the who is the biggest performer?
Speaker 1 (39:47):
Harry Styles? I don't know, what do you kids like
these days? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Could be bad Bunny, bad Bud, Oh.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
Bad Bunny. That's a good one.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
I don't think anyway that will help him.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
You think that they need to.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Have though, I don't really. I just think that that's
like a Kansas City sort of thing. I think, like, oh,
you had Kansas City. There were Dynasty. They were really good,
just like the Current, But what really made them super
explosion worthy is having a pop cultural element to it,
you know. And so that Taylor Swift Taylor Swift connection,
(40:22):
what do you all think? What do you guys think
that you guys are listening it, Is there any player
or any like performer, any podcaster that could be connected
to the Current on a romantic level with the player
that would would matter at all? Would matter? Is there
any Taylor Swift effect possible besides Taylor Swift, besides Taylor
(40:42):
Swift entering into a throttle with Travis Kelcey and an
NWSL player, which I think would be that'd be pretty fire, right.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
I want to talk about some other celebrity owners though.
We've got this is kind of like the thing right now,
right like this is this is like the cool hip
thing to do is for celebrities to buy female sports
team or women's sports teams. You've got Peyton Manning just
bought the Denver or bought into the Denver. Naomi Osaka
(41:12):
owns part of the Courage. Did you know that?
Speaker 2 (41:14):
I did not know that.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
You've got a Lexus and Serena who own Angel City. Okay,
I've got there's also like a ton of other people
in that owner's pop for Angel City. I think Sophia
Bush is one of them. Yeah, I think Natalie Portman's
part of that ownership group.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
Okay, let's let's get to the point here.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
My point is, do you think that there's a lot
of value on in terms of you were talking about,
like who could do this for the Taylor Swift thing.
But do you think the ownership means something? When?
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Oh, I think so. I think because if you're interested
in the men's game, I think having that former icon
be a part of the team local and how do
I say this? The city that they played for in
their men's sport, if they invest in the women's sport
in any way in that city, I think that locally
(42:11):
fans will feel connected in a different way. And I
don't know who that would be for like Orlando for
the Pride, because like, I don't really know if there's
like some maybe it's like a shack or a pennyhole way,
but I don't Dwight Howard would be very interesting for
a variety of different reasons.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
For a variety of.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Reasons, but I don't know that there's a possibility there.
But yeah, I think it adds intrigue. I care about it.
I'm like, oh, well, this is this adds a level
of sexiness to it.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
Before we move on from this, do you let me
ask you one more Patrick Mahomee's question, Okay, do you
think that he right now is the most impactful male
athlete in women's sports?
Speaker 2 (42:55):
Ooh, can I get some choices. No, I think it's well,
I mean male athlete, not just man.
Speaker 1 (43:04):
I mean, if you're but but I guess here's my question.
If the first if you if I say, if I
were to if I said to.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
You, what male would if I didn't even give.
Speaker 1 (43:12):
You, no, if I didn't even give you Patrick Mahomes's name,
and I just said what male athlete is doing the
most for women's sports? What would your answer be?
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Probably be Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
So then I think that's the answer to the question.
I think he is bringing eyes to women's sports in
a way that is not show bodie and about him,
but just authentically bringing eyes to women's sports. And I
think to me that is extremely impactful. Maybe not of
all time. Maybe you know, you've got Kobe that was
(43:42):
that was a big champion for women's basketball. You've got
you know, Peyton Manning who's now getting into.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
It would have been the biggest. I think, Yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
Mean I think that there's definitely you know, you've got
Chris Paul, You've got a lot of a lot of
athletes who have put in But I think right now,
at this moment, in twenty twenty five, who is putting
their money where their mouth is. I think it has
to be Patrick.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
And I think to this point, just like every good
NBA franchise, I think should be paired with a wnbaise
franchise so that they can organically build one another. I
think that every NFL's team should have an NWSL team
and they should be connected and they should watch.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
Should be MLS or should it be NFL? No, because
we don't get mL I don't give impactful Yeah, I
guess that's a good point because like, no one actually
more people watch the NWFL.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
In terms of ratings men's ratings. It's NFL and it's MMBA.
Did you I don't care at all about the MLS.
I think that does nothing for the women's game, in
fact that I actually think it hurts it.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
Did you see that by twenty thirty they're saying that
women's soccer will be the fifth largest sport globally.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
No, I did not see that. I think it's fascinating
that they're building stadium specifically for women as well. We're
getting like women built facilities and also women built for
women equipment. So did you see that Trinity got her
own boot and it's all It's like the first boots
ever to be created specifically for the woman's foot.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Can I get on a little bit on my high
horse for a.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
Second, could you please like go? Yeah, go baby?
Speaker 1 (45:22):
So I am. I'm so reluctant to celebrate these moments,
and not because I'm not happy for them.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Because you're like, it's long overdue.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
Because it's twenty twenty five, and why are we just
now in twenty twenty five getting.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
The first get angry angry today?
Speaker 1 (45:41):
I'm a little angry.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
I haven't seen a lot of Island.
Speaker 1 (45:44):
I smile. I've laughed a few times. I think you
haven't laughed at all.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
I think you had to be prompted.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
I don't think you've laughed at all.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
What Adrian, I'm always laughing. That's what I do. I'm
literally laughing at you telling me.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
You're derailing me. You're detailing me. My point was making
My point I was making was it goes back to
I remember having this feeling when Augusta National said, oh,
we're gonna let women in and everyone was like, oh wow,
what a like moment for women, and it's like, no,
it's not. This is not a moment for women. This
(46:23):
is a embarrassment for yourzation.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
You're like the women's You're the women's Malcolm X, You're
the women's James Baldwin.
Speaker 1 (46:31):
We're like, I don't think we can compare me to
those James.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
James Baldwin had had a quote where he said, if
you stab me in the bag and you pull a
little out, should I give you? Should I give you
a cookie for that?
Speaker 1 (46:44):
That's kind of how I feel.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Like. That's why I said you're the women's sports James Badwin, Like.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
It's so fucking great that Trinity Brodman is getting her
own shoe boot boot, but why is it twenty twenty five?
Women's soccer has been around for decades, But.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
Every time there's progress, you can't be like, why isn't
There's no.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
No, no, And I will give progress and excitement where
excitement is due. Absolutely. I'm just saying this is one
of those things that like we should be seeing more
more boots, Like every Niggy Adidas, they should all have
their own women's boot. There should be multiple boots. It
should not be one. You should not get one choice
(47:31):
if you want, if you're a woman and you want
to wear a boot specifically made for women. It should
not only be the Adidas Trinity Robbin boot. There should
be many of them. That's my point.
Speaker 2 (47:41):
James Balwin, Chamel Baldwin. I want to ask the shooties.
Speaker 1 (47:48):
Okay, so we've been we've been tongue in cheek because
on the heels of our newfound fame, we we want.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
The heels of wet. We got on the mirror.
Speaker 1 (47:59):
So we're on the mirror, which is the.
Speaker 2 (48:03):
Rag of all rags. I say, you know you made it.
Speaker 1 (48:05):
I mean, what is it next?
Speaker 2 (48:07):
Like Daily Daily Inquiry, Mail, the Daily Mail, National Inquirer,
come on.
Speaker 1 (48:13):
The New York Post, on New York Post. Definitely, I
hope to god not. However, my point was, we've been
jokingly in our group chat calling, calling our community. Are
are the people who.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
What the coshudity?
Speaker 1 (48:32):
The cohut?
Speaker 2 (48:38):
We got her to laugh, We did the cohutity.
Speaker 1 (48:42):
Oh that's great. I like, Shooties. What do you what
do you like about? What do you what do you think?
What do you think?
Speaker 2 (48:48):
I'm fine with the Shooties. I don't I don't know.
I mean I think.
Speaker 1 (48:53):
That's should be up to them. Ultimately.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
Yeah, you guys have a name.
Speaker 1 (48:57):
What do you want to be called Maybe we'll put
a poll.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
Shout out to the Shooties, shout out.
Speaker 1 (49:02):

You know, we're sponsored by the nr No.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
The Dubs, the Dub Club, the.
Speaker 1 (49:12):
Dub Club, that's what our group chats called the Dub Club.
Speaker 2 (49:16):
I like, what if it's like something like the something
gang like, how like Alex Cooper's like daddy gang, Daddy gang,
shooting gang, shooting gang. No, that sounds a little bit racial,
actually doesn't. Yeah, like shoots and a gang that sounds
like very like you.
Speaker 1 (49:34):
Okay, fair enough. I guess the point of this, though,
is I feel that we should name our community because
I feel as if minded, like minded sports listeners, like
minded women's sports fans, right, the ones who are coming
with us on this, on this journey of changing how
(49:56):
women's sports are talked about, they should be part of.
They should be part of how how they're named.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
And and shout out to the Costunity, because I'm gonna
use that costunity. Shout out to y'all for getting us
across the five thousand dollars mark five thousand excuse me,
five thousand person follower mark on Instagram. Uh that's really
dope for how fast we've and how short we've been
(50:21):
doing this thing. So that's shout out to the Costunity.
Speaker 1 (50:24):
I'm excited to see how this community continues to grow.
I'm excited to see I want this to be in
interactive space for people to Yeah, you know, I meres some.
