Speaker 1 (00:01):
Are you ready for this? Sean Merriman A one a
hand effect. Boom boom boom, out go the light. This
is Lights Out with Sean Merriman. What's up, guys, Welcome
back to another lights Out podcast with me Seawan Merriman. Uh.
And we got a Raider on the day, all right,
but it's one of the raiders I actually like, so

(00:23):
uh grape Bunner actually fourth right now. I believe in like,
uh punning average and if I'm not mistaken, he's like
almost a yard away from being number one upon average
maybe in history. Marquette King, former Raider and Denver Bronco. Um.
You know, I've always watched him and he's animated. I

(00:44):
love guys with personalities. Obviously I had, you know, lights Out,
and I had a personal personality myself. So I love
to see guys who make the game fun, make the
game interesting, because that's the way it's supposed to be. Um.
So let's talk to him a little bit about the
lights Out dance and why he did it. And I
walked up to a Twitter trending on social media hymptom

(01:05):
lights out there So anyway, can't wait to get into
this interview. Marquette King. I see posting videos, I see
you training, I see working working out. So why do
you thinking in in your opinion that you're not you
don't have a job right now. It's it's tough now. Honestly,
I've been hitting a lot of different things, like, uh,

(01:26):
everybody's not saying it's like I'm getting a bunch of
different feedback. Um, I don't know exactly what it is though,
Like it's it's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is.
Maybe it's the fact that I don't fit the stereotypical
mode of upon it. And uh, I'm okay with that. Um.
One of my main things in life is to just
live and be happy with who you are and be
honest to who you are and and not that. And

(01:49):
two years ago I was kind of struggling with the
football thing because it was like, man, it's not fair
that I'm in this situation. Why when I gotta go
play the XFL, When I gotta keep going to these
different counts, when I proved myself statistically to fit with
the best of the best of the so called best
of the best, and I'm still in this situation. So
just not to attach myself in one thing, just just
like what you're doing, like with your show, with your

(02:10):
boxing and mm A stuff. Don't tie your stuff to
one thing. So so do you think it's because and
I always had a theory with this too, especially when
you got a personality you're playing in NFL, you stand
out and you almost in a sent sometimes do become
the black sheep right because you you're you, You don't
fit the mold at that position, or you don't fit
the mold of what the organization may be looking for.

(02:31):
So I'm not gonna call it being stereotypical, But do
you think that because of your personality and like all
the other stuff, that that has a role and you're
not being on the team right now for sure? If
for sure does man? And I don't gonna care with that, man, Uh,
I mean it is what it is. I can only
control what I can control, and all I can do

(02:52):
is just keep busting my ass like every day like
I've been doing. And I don't know, maybe if maybe
if a coach or GM with somebody's uh open minded
enough to go and do resurgency, what's what's really going
on or the type of person I really am, then
I mean opportunity comes, you know, because I'll tell you this, man,

(03:14):
like you know the I mean, I've always watched you
and stuff like that, and so I wouldn't when you know,
when you guys played the Broncoles, I saw you doing
the you know, the donkey and know you know, like
I watched that. But I tell you that the first
time I was like, I was in a hotel and
I was traveling somewhere and I was taking a nap
or doing something. I woke up to like six miss
calls and I said, I said, you know, what's going on?

(03:35):
Like you know, whenever you wake up the calls people
hitting you up, so you're thinking of something like seriously happened.
So they said, hey, man, you know the put it
from the from the Raiders just did your dads and
said what you're talking about? So I woke up and
I looked right and I saw on Twitter that it
was trending. It was trending, and I said, man, this
is crazy. So and it's you know, I think that

(03:57):
people people made it a big deal for one because
you played the Raider. We you know, but charges the
Raiders always gonna have that. Like now, I still talk
so many ship to the Raiders fans even online, because
for me it's fun. I just love messing with the fans.
I got you know, I got boys on the team
to play, and you know I got boys to play
the team now, but me mess with the fans. So
what what happened going into that game? Man? Because I

(04:18):
woke up to like text messages trending like like did
you tell somebody you just like, yeah, I'm about I'm
about to I'm about to do something. No, so like
before the games, I just trying to find out like
and so. But a lot of people don't realize that
is when we played for the When I played for
the Raiders, um uh, the team was kind of like
started Mountain. It wasn't a lot of energy on the

(04:38):
shot line. Sometimes the people from upstairs are come to
me and they be like, man, just do something. Get
everybody a little lit man, like everybody it's too quiet
over here. And I'm like, all right, that so go
out on the fit. Well before the game, I'm like, man,
who could I like do impression up? Just be funny
as well? And then uh, one of my best friends
when he was like, uh, well they had this guy
named Sean Merriman used to played for him. He didn't

(05:01):
like something. So that's what that's what I thought about
it that I was like, all right, well, and I
actually looking up and stuff, and I was like, damn,
this is cool, Like I don't like what you was doing.
You did some big time stuff, so like, but at
the same time, I wanted to be funny, like it's
just fun to have fun because we playing a kids game.
So after the plant that worked out, um, and I
was like, oh yeah, I forgot I just dud. I mean, look,

(05:25):
you know, at some point in time, you're like, all right, cool.
So it wasn't like really, I don't look at that
as as shade, right. I mean, when people know who
you are, they do something into anything you do, it's
like you flatter, like, oh man, that's that's that's dope.
That's super cool to me, Like, yeah, I watched college games,
and I watched some of the bowl games and some
of the you know, some of the guys they were
doing lights out that. So to me, it's it's cool
because then you realize your old and ship right, I'm like, yo,

(05:48):
I'm retired, done, but somebody's doing what you did and
I'm sitting around looking like because it's social media, like
your your kicks and some of the stuff you've been
doing going viral, Like who who started that? The well
you were you just like yeah, I'm about to start
kicking the light poles and about to start doing all
this stuff. But who who? Who really had the mindset
to go out and do that? I just I just

(06:09):
felt like doing it. Man. It's like, man, I'm not
getting a bunch of traction, uh, showing that I can
normally put on a regular football field. So maybe I
gotta get a little more creative and show like, hey,
I'm not tired. I'm still trying to play in the NFL,
Like look I hit this light pole on the first trial,
or look I just put this ball through the basketball hoop.
Look I can hate this ball up so high, hit
the uh the crossbar at any time on any command.

(06:32):
And I know a lot of punis can't do that.
And uh, it's it's almost like me challenging now the league, like, well,
this is a performance based business, so like, um, what's up?
Like I got the stats and it's almost it's also
entertainment as well, and uh that's what I'm trying to
promote man, like I want my fair shot because I

(06:54):
know I've known punished. It's been out the game for
three years, two seasons, three seasons, and they still get
put back and so like, I don't know, just a
question of why. I mean, like, you know, have your agent,
have you got a chance to talk to anybody over there?
Like what what's he? What's he saying? He talking to
teams and they're saying, hold on and we'll give him
a shot in training camp, But like, what's or somebody
get hurt we're bringing in? What what if? The Asian

(07:16):
is saying it's it's At one point it was the
Cowboys and uh they shaip that went down even though
I had a really good workout there. Um hit the
selling a couple of times. What else? Um it was
a couple of other teams. But like, I don't know,
I can't get no straight answered. I don't I don't
know why. I mean, I don't know. I'm gonna keep

(07:42):
it clean, yeah, I mean, look, you don't. You you
can because you know you. I get where you're coming from.
But for me, it's just like um, and I always
say this with a lot of guys, especially when you
got a personality, you stand out. Um, and I do
know that the NFL and and I had it to
expect when I got injured and I wasn't playing well.
Like when I was balling, everything was fine and I

(08:03):
was doing a light South dance and I was talking
ship and everybody loved it, you know, because I was
balling out. But you know, when I got injured, it
was that became a problem. And I never forget that,
even for me, that the general manager at the time
for the charge, they came out with a big article
about how I wasn't focused on football right and this
and this is because you know I did TV and
stuff like that. So I took offense to that because

(08:25):
I was always I never missed a meeting, never was late,
last one in the gym, last one in the field.
And so when that article came out, like I took
that ship personally for me, and so I can I
feel you don't understand like when you when somebody put
that out there about you and you are doing what
you need to do, Yeah, it sucks, man. And you
also got to realize too, man, Like, yeah, I don't

(08:48):
understand how people actually sitting listen to people that just
because it's like some people that talk so much trash
about players, they've never been in that player situation before.
They've never played sports. And even even with I don't know,
similar to like some coaches maybe in college, maybe from
or whatever that's never played the sport, but they tell
you to do certain things that they've never done before.

(09:09):
They've never even played a position, like you know what
I'm saying. So like its it comes to a point
where you just gotta you just gotta know exactly who
you are because people gonna make up body stories about
you and stuff, and and same manage trying to do
with me two years ago, I was struggling, like all
these random stories that people believe, and I'm like, man,
I ain't even say none of these stories. But it's

(09:30):
like they're trying to make a story so bad to
what's the what's the craziest one? What's the crazy the
one that was just so of like so off the
charge wasn't even close completely made up, getting wasn't even
like close to being I mean, I all love them
a bullshit, of course, but what's which one like really
got to you? Um man? What was it? I think? Uh?

(09:51):
I don't even know how to pinpoint one story. It's
just a bunch of different stories, like personality issues or
u or um running my own fake playing where he
played the Broncos a couple of years ago. I'm like, bro,
why would I call my own faith play? And then
I even saw the dude, Paul it was a play,
But you have to stick with it. You can change
them back to the pump play. But even with the
personality issues, just like man, how they're saying that, uh,

(10:14):
I'm an issue in the locker room when Kickers punted
a long snippers and not with the team. Ninety five
percent of the time, y'all are meetings, defense meetings, offensive meetings.
The whole time, I'm hanging out with Jenna Kowski and
Condo and Jenna Kelsey is looking at Zello trying to
find some other properties and houses by I'm over there
working on my computer making beats and come those and
they're just stretching, lifting weights and doing all this what

(10:35):
do you kind of stuff in the weight room and
stuff like like, bro, so how do they come up
with these stories? And then it's like, man, it makes
you feel a little angry because it's like man, they're
trying to tear up the person I am, like, they're
trying to tear up like my while I'm representing stuff.
And it's like, you just gotta come to the realization
where fucking like you are who you are and as
long as your authentic to who you are, and that's
what really matters. In the people that you're meant to attract,

(10:56):
you're gonnattract them. It's so funny story. John Condo played
behind me in college at the University of Maryland. He
played linebacker. He played behind me. So I used to
get so piste off because you know, Condo is super intelligent,
super smart, and he would always leave. He would only
come to practice like one or two days a week,
but he always had like he would take his business classes.

(11:18):
And these business classes would allow him either to come
late or miss practice sometimes and so I would have
to take his reps. So I was piste off, right,
And so Condo fast forward, he go up. He could
make it to go to the league, and so he
ended up playing how many years with fourteen? I mean
he played up, He played for a minute, He played

(11:38):
for a minute. But Condo, John T. Con was he
was playing behind me. At the University of Maryland, and
I was pissed when I had to go take his rep.
So what I did was I went over and start
grabbing my hamstring A couple of days when John was
when Condo was gone, I said, a man, coach, my,
you know, my hand strings a little tight. I can't
go today because I knew I was gonna have to
take all the John Condo's reps. Fox Sports Radio has

(12:00):

within the I Heart Radio app search f s R
to listen live. So that was my guy, man, That
was That was my dude. No, he's a solid dude, man.
And that's how you know, like you know, you met
a solid person when they stay in contact with you

(12:21):
outside of football. You know what I'm saying. You just
you just moved out here in a z and uh. Shoot,
I've been over there a couple of times to hang
out with him and his family and his kids. We
just hung out a couple of times. So he just slid, dude,
So you know what's so one thing and I saw
you a boxing and stuff too, and I this is
my thing and I always try to Yeah, I know
I saw it. I saw it over there. You won't

(12:41):
post a video, but I saw the hand wrap, so
I knew you just finished doing something. And look, I
tell I tell that I see this all guys, right,
especially when you just either retire or you got some
space and your guy before you go and do something else.
I always tell people, just pick up some kind of
combat sport, whether it's boxing or whatever it is, because
we're so used to peating at something and then like

(13:02):
all of a sudden that something like gets taken away.
And when that something gets taken away, now you're sitting
around like man, like you know, it got to a
point a couple of times to me where I was
feeling depressed or I was like I just wasn't feeling
myself because I couldn't compete in anything. So what what
what got you to you know, doing more boxing stuff

(13:23):
for like how long you've been doing it? You know
what got it? Got you into it? Man? I've I've
been hanging out with Mikaela Mary. She's uh one of
the best women boxers out there in the country, and uh, man,
I just just like I was in Michigan with it
for the whole week and I was training with coach
Al Mitchell. He's one of the most legendary boxer coaches
in the country as far as training. Um, so I

(13:45):
was just there. I've been doing it for a couple
of months. She sent me gloves on Christmas, got the
gloves and I started working. I started some YEO videos
and like, man, okay, and I just started like getting
into it more and it's fun. It makes you thinking
you gotta work at the same time, so you get
tired as hill of ships. Wow. But man, I've been
sticking to it a pretty pretty hard and uh the
m m A. That's a lot to think about because

(14:07):
you gotta worry about a kick coming to the head,
you gotta worry about punches and bows like boxing just
you just it's everything from the waste up so you
just it's fun. But I tell you, man, because you
already can kick. You know what's sound like a lot
of but believe it or not, Man, a lot of dudes,
especially football players, just tighten the hips, so kicking is
their last part. But you know, as you know, you're

(14:27):
working on your hips and exploding stuff like that all
the time. So if you learn how to turn on
the kick or what I'm telling you. Man, you you
can go in and do some damage. I mean, see
if we get man, put some of these people from
the league in the ring, I'll do a show. Look.
But see that's what I'm working on. You know, I
got so right now, I got um. You know, I

(14:48):
told you about the show the we're shooting up on
May sixteen. But you know, I got like six former athletes,
uh just coming over. And some of them just only boxed, right,
so some of them just learning to kick, or they're
just learning to grapple and stuff like that. Man, But
you're gonna start seeing especially you know, guys who like you,
don't have the opportunity right now, should have an opportunity.
Guys are looking to get that aggression out. Like you know,

(15:09):
when I was piste off and I remember getting um,
I remember getting let go by Buffalo with the Bills
like two weeks before the first game. And so I
went down Miami and I was training football stuff, but
I was going to I was spawn. I was spawning
like twice a week. I was. I just wanted to
hit somebody. Hey, It's just it's weird though, because it's like, man,

(15:29):
like I don't know you. You you're motivated to work
hard and just do something physically to get better, but
it's like sometimes like you're spending wheels, like especially with
the football things, Like it's I gonna spending wheels. I
need to do something else, Like I want to work hard,
but like it's like I'm working hard with this football thing,
but it's not working out. So like what if I
start shipping something else like you just said? So yeah,

(15:51):
so I know I knew you had that that quick
stint with the with the XFL, and I think they're
coming back in two I think they're coming back around.
Uh would you if an opportunity to present itself, would
you go back and do that again? Or that was
a one of done situation. The only reason I did
it was because I was told by several different coaches
around the league they didn't think I still had it,

(16:12):
Like what, okay, So, I mean as hard as it
was for me to go to the XFL, I told
my agent at the time, I was like, all right,
well I'll just do it, man, because I mean I
ain't got no other choice. I mean, ain't got no
recent film with what I could do or what I
could show. So I go to XFL leading to XFL
and I'm still back at the situation. I maan now,

(16:33):
So it's like I don't know what the fucking do?
Like it all I do now? I was just making music,
work on box and stuff and just a live party,
have fun like I always do. But like it was fun.
XFL is fun as hell. Like they embraced personality. Never
been the stadium with the whole stadium like uh yo
boom every time I hunt the ball. Never heard that before.

(16:55):
They created a whole corner like a King's corner. That
was tight. Man. They showed a lot of love. Man,
I'm as good people in that whole organization. So if
it's if they come back up and that opportunity presented itself,
would you would you think about doing it again? Because
some some people that like once once they have don't
have that that initial chance, like that another chance. They're like, okay,
you know what I did it, It was cool. I

(17:16):
don't see myself doing with It's something some guys. One
of my boys play running back. He said, if they
when they come back and I got the opportunity, I'm
going back the only way I'll do it is Uh.
I talked to my homeboy. You know, I don't know
if you know if destroying he's like a little YouTuber. Uh.
I told him the only way I'll come back to
the xfls and me and him both played on the

(17:37):
same team. That's the only way I'll do it again.
And uh, because I feel like, like I said, man,
you got you got plenties out here. This still getting
picked up and still getting cycled around the league, like
they gotta go through what I'm going through. But I
understand everybody has their own journey in life. They gotta walk.
So it is what it is, and it's gonna make
me even a better person later on the life, you
know what I'm saying, even the next couple of years.

(17:59):
So I mean, it is what it is. That's the
only about plantings to fellows of these strong players. But
but until then, you're just waiting on the right call,
right call from the NFL. You know you you're ready
to go. Body feel good. No no injury because I
remember you got um you had an injury when you're
playing for the Broncos, right something you had a special
teams coach wanted me to change my whole kicking style.

(18:20):
So if you do something that's foreign to what you
normally do that you've been doing for years, then you're
gonna tell your lego. So I told my act ductor
and uh, shoot, man, it's I don't know. That's that's
how I ended up getting hurt. Man, I shouldn't have
got hurt, because I mean, I was told when I
first got there that we're gonna they wanted to do
the same thing I did when I was in Oakland.
And I feel like I had a manage when I

(18:42):
was there because I had an altitude and I'm like, man,
it's like eight yards every plan. Yeah, So it didn't
work out like that. Man, It's it's crazy. I talked
to a lot of guys and sometime, and I was
fortunate when I came in to leave because I got
a chance play for way phillips Um. I had Marty Shottenheimer,
I had uh Pagant job Pagano, I had Greg MANUSCA

(19:03):
had great coaches. So I got spoiled, you know what
I'm saying that, And I know so many guys to
get into the league, and imagine if and I'm not
trying to shoot nothing at the Broncos and the cult
or whatever happened there. But you get some coaches you
come into the league and they forced you to do
something that you're not that's not your thing. And I
had that my first year out in Buffalo, where they
put me at defensive end. I'm like, they put me

(19:25):
in a four three D and I'm taking on double teams.
I'm sitting there looking like y'all listen, listen here. I can't.
I just came off three straight Pro Bowls and all pros.
Let me do when I when I do best. And
then you guys formed this defense or formed this position
so I can go out and make plays. And that
happens all the time. Man. So I've been through it,
so I get it. I understand. It's bro, it's so

(19:46):
actively man. I remember when I was in dinner at
one point, I started crying when I got home from practice,
like I was just I was on the phone my cousin.
I just started to crying. I was like, bro, like
why am I in this situation right now? Like I
feel so very I was so barriers because I had
teammates at the time, like, uh, but what the fund
is you doing? What kind of kicking is that man
blew the ball like you do. I'm like, I'm following directions,

(20:08):
don't like I don't even know what I got let
go from the Raiders, So I'm just now I'm just
doing whatever I think I need to do to stay
on the team or whatever, when that wasn't really the case.
It's just some people like you, some people don't, and
you gotta do it works for you. And I mean
I was just in a very vulnerable stage where I
was just doing what I thought I had to do.

(20:29):
So I was just follow everything I was told to
do and it just affected my, uh my performance in
a negative way and just from following directions. So because
it is what it is, I mean, it's the situation sucks,
but I don't regret nothing that happened, Like it is
what it is. My music has gotten way better. I
got half of me strings on one of my songs

(20:51):
is popping right now. Like I've been doing a little
acting stuff, being trained with the box and stuff meant
a bunch of cool people outside of football and ship
getting a chance to do this an interview with you, Like,
I mean, it's all working out the way we're supposed to.
Good man. But I still hope that somebody smartened up
and they get they get the act together over there,

(21:11):
and you get another shot because you need it. Man.
So hey, my dude, I appreciate you. Man. Um taking
a couple of minutes, and we're gonna wrap two. We'll
talk about the May sixteenth, and you know what what
you open to do that that should be fun. It's
gonna be a big production. Thank Yeah, I appreciate you too. Man.
All right, my dude, I talked to you a minute.
All right, thanks guys for listening to another Lightstot podcast

(21:32):
from me Seawan Merriman, and that was awesome. Man. You know,
I'm always gonna give Raiders hell. I love giving Raiders
fans hell. It's the thing that I love the most.
It's fun for me. You see me on social media
poking that Raiders fans all the time. But uh, Marcatte
King was a great player, and I really hope he
gets another shot, another opportunity to go and uh play
again in the NFL. You see his uh Instagram videos

(21:56):
going viral of him kicking light poles from fifty yard
our sixty yards away, dropping it on a dime on
the Pylons. I mean, this guy's just and awesome and
he has a great personality. He's good for the league,
hopefully gets another opportunity. So thanks guys listening in for
another lights Out podcast with me Sean Marraman. Next week
we're coming back again, and I want to say this.

(22:16):
We're growing extremely fast over here and it's because of you, guys,
so I want to say thank you again. I can't
thank you guys enough for leaving, leaving those reviews. I
wish I can respond to many of you guys, but um, anyway,
keep subscribing, keep telling people about the lights of podcasts,
and let's keep growing. Next week we'll come back with
another one.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
