Speaker 1 (00:02):
So when I first started doing comedy, I was really
really scared, and then people were laughing at the fact
that I was really really scared. I will always pick
laughter over anything. The best feeling in the world is laughter.
If you're feeling sick, if you're feeling sad, if you're

(00:26):
feeling scared, if something hurts, if you couldn't make yourself laugh,
you will feel better.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
That is the voice of the great Howie Mandel. He's
a comedian. He's the host of the TV game show
Deal or No Deal and the longest serving judge on
America's Got Talent. Today, we'll be hearing from him about
the hilarious and very challenging world of comedy. Welcome to

(00:58):
Growing Up, a Lingo kids podcast. It helps kids discover
how to be whatever they want to be. Join us
today as we explore perfect recipes to make jokes and
what it takes to get up on a stage and
make people laugh. Let's get started. Hey, Luise, Oh, what

(01:41):
a beautiful day it is. I just saw Maxie running
all the way to get that baseball high.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Emily, Yeah, we're playing catch.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Well, looks like Maxie is a really good catcher.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Actually, you know what animals better on a baseball game?

Speaker 2 (01:56):
No, which one a bet? Oh? Good one?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Thanks, Emily. My school's having a talent show in a
couple of weeks and I'm gonna be in it.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Ooh, that sounds fun. Are you telling jokes on stage?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Wow, So you'll be doing a comedy routine.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Oh wow, I didn't know that in a comedy routine.
Here's another joke I have. The other day, I was
reading a book about anti gravity and I just couldn't
put it down.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Oh, not bad at all. I think you're ready to go.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Oh, Emily, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Wait, why is that?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I mean, what if I forget my jokes in front
of everyone? Or what if no one laughs at domme? Emily?

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Oh I see, Well, don't worry, Louise. That's called stage fright,
and it's very normal.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
It is.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah, even grown ups feel that way. But actually, I
think you'll do great. After all, you do an amazing
job with our game shows.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Thanks. But at the game shows I have you to
help me out. The talent shows different. I'll be all
ball myself and there's gonna be a light shining on me,
and everyone's gonna be staring and well, Louise.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Fortunately, I know just the right person who can help
you with this.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Really, who is it.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
He's a professional comedian, someone who makes people laugh on
stage or on TV. And his name is Howie Mandel.
He's our guest today.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Oh wow, you think he can really help me out?
For sure?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
And he's really funny too. Let's interview him and find
out what it takes to be a comedian.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Let's go, Maxie, give me the baseball I need it
from my joke.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Hi everyone, I'm Emily and welcome to our Lingo Kids
Talking game show. Today. We have a super special guest
who does funny voices and movies, hosts cool TV shows
and makes people laugh all over the world. And guess
what he's going to help us with Louise's talent show too.

(04:11):
Please welcome the amazing comedian mister Howie Mandell.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Emily, can I ask the first question, of course, Louise, Howie,
how did you start telling jokes? Did you go to
a talent show? I have one coming up.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
I went and did stand up comedy the first time
because a friend dared me to get on stage because
they thought it would be really scary to do. And
it wasn't something that I ever thought about doing, and
I said, I want to do that.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
That's so cool? And were you always funny?

Speaker 1 (04:45):
I don't remember thinking that anything I did was funny.
I know that people were always laughing at me, but
I didn't understand why.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
I think that's how I feel right now, like I
want make people laugh, but I don't want them to
laugh at me, you know.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Speaking of which, Howie, do you have any advice for
stage fright?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
So when I first started doing comedy, I was really
really scared, and then people were laughing at the fact
that I was really really scared. And on stage I
would go Okay, okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna think of something,
and then they started giggling because I didn't have anything planned.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Oh no, that sounds like my worst nightmare. But what
happened next.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
I started going okay, okay, and they when they giggled,
I didn't understand why they were giggling, and I started.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Going, what what what? What are you laughing at?

Speaker 1 (05:41):
And that became my act of trying to think of
something funny and then not understanding why they were laughing
at me.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Oh, I think I get it, Like, instead of being
afraid of people laughing at you. You use that as
a part of your show.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
That's right, Louise Howie is it's amazing how you've turned
a difficult moment into something that worked out. Did that
make the stage fright go away forever?

Speaker 4 (06:08):
You know what it's like. It's like I like rides.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
I like going on rides at an amusement park, and
I like scary rides. And the scarier the ride, the
more I like it. And it's kind of like in
my life if I think I'm gonna tell you something
really funny and then I tell you that, and then
it's quiet and it gets scary and it gets a
little embarrassing. That's like being on a scary ride in

(06:34):
your own mind.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Oh I love park rides, especially the huge roller coasters
with the loops.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Ooh me too, Louise.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
And what do you do when your joke just makes
people sleepy?

Speaker 1 (06:46):
So when a joke doesn't work and they don't laugh,
I tell another joke and if that doesn't work, I
tell another joke, and if that doesn't work, I tell
another joke and if that doesn't work, I tell another
joke and if that doesn't work, I tell another joke.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Oh okay, you tell another joke, and then if that
doesn't work.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
I tell another joke until everybody is really really annoyed.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I got it. So basically, when you're on stage, the
show must go on. Hasn't something like that happened to
you before when you were asked to host Deal or
No Deal? Howie?

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I was too afraid to do Deal or No Deal.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Oh my parents watched that show. They love it. But
why were you afraid?

Speaker 1 (07:33):
I thought this is silly, and then my wife said, well,
just try it, and then I just tried it, and
it's the biggest thing I ever did. It's the most
exciting thing I ever did. If I would have just
not done it because I was scared or because I

(07:54):
thought it was silly, I would have never had all
the sick sess.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
That I had.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
I love that dare to try new things, Luise, You
never know if you might find something you love doing. Yeah,
you're right, Emily, so Howie. I think this is a
very important question for anyone who wants to be a comedian.
What do you love most about telling jokes?

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Sometimes I try to make myself laugh even when I'm sad,
because it helps me get over being sad or scared
or whatever. That's what I used my comedy for. It's
not always just for my job, and I think being
a parent, my kids use the same thing because they

(08:39):
always saw me, like when something bad happened or scary happened,
or somebody was sick or something, I would make jokes
to try to make people smile when they weren't smiling,
or maybe when they didn't feel like smiling.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Oh, that's what mom says.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Laughing is the best medicine exactly. And what other tips
do you have for k kids who want to be comedians?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Tawie.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
If you want to be a comedian, you should tell
your mom and your dad or anybody that you want
to be comedian, and look for any opportunity. And when
I say any opportunity, the right place and the right time.
You shouldn't try to disturb people at school, and you
shouldn't try to disturb it where maybe it's not the

(09:23):
right place.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
I'll cross out the library for practice.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Then, yeah, good thinking, Louise Howie.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
I have one last question. How do I know what
people are gonna laugh at?

Speaker 4 (09:34):
I don't know what the audience is gonna find funny?

Speaker 1 (09:37):
But I always know what I'm gonna find funny, So
if I think it's funny, I will do it, and
then hopefully other people like it too. If you take
away one thing from today is just to try to
make yourself happy. Happiness is the best and most important
thing that you don't have to be famous and have
a lot of people know who you are.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
You don't need anything but to be happy.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
So everything's okay as long as I love my own
jokes and as long as Maxie likes them too.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Of course, you know what I like about Maxy Luise
what Emily? He never gets enough play?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
I think I never get enough either, Emily.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
That's great because you know what comes next?

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Is it what I think it is?

Speaker 1 (10:21):
It is?

Speaker 2 (10:21):
It's time for our game show. Hello everyone, and welcome
to today's game show with Howie Mandel Louise. Care to explain
the rules?

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Sure?

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Thing?

Speaker 3 (10:36):
The game is would you rather so? I'll give you
two options. You have to choose which one you want? Okay,
first one, would you rather do a show in a
silent library or during a food fight at school?

Speaker 1 (10:54):
I would rather do a show during a food fight
at school because I'm not good when it's quiet, and
I would love the opportunity while I'm doing my job
to catch something and to snack.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Well, that's one way to avoid awkward silence, have no
silence at all. Okay, next one, luis question two.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Would you rather tell jokes to a group of cats
or a group of dogs?

Speaker 1 (11:28):
I would like to tell jokes more to dogs than cats,
And I'll tell you why, because dogs, if they have
to go to the bathroom, will leave the room and
go outside.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
I assume they're all housebroken, whereas.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
A cat uses a litter and it does it right
in front of me. I don't want that at my show.
I don't want you going to the back bathroom while
I'm performing.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Please.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
Well, that would be awkward, wouldn't it.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Yeah, that's why I practice my jokes with Maxie. Okay,
Final one? Would you rather laugh or sleep for twenty
four hours straight?

Speaker 1 (12:19):
I will always pick laughter over anything. The best feeling
in the world is laughter. But if you're feeling sick,
if you're feeling sad, if you're feeling scared, if something hurts,
if you could make yourself laugh, you will feel better.
But I've never had any fun sleeping. I've never even

(12:42):
when I go to somebody's house to sleep over. The
most fun was staying up and laughing.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Beautiful answer, Howie, is there anything else you'd like to
share before we say goodbye?

Speaker 1 (12:55):
If you take away one thing from today is just
to try to make your self happy. Happiness is the
best and most important thing. You don't have to have
a lot, You don't have to be famous and have
a lot of people know who you are. You don't
need anything but number one to be healthy and number
two to be happy. And nothing makes me happier than

(13:20):
making myself giggle.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Very true, and thank you so much for joining us today, Howie.
So Louise, what did you learn from talking to Howie?

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Well, I've learned that it's okay if I don't always
make people laugh. It can be kind of scary, but
you can get used to that feeling and even enjoy it,
like when you're on a roller coaster exactly.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Comedy is one of those things that you can only
really learn how to do by doing it, and it's
really been that way since the beginning of comedy. Oh
and what is that emily interesting question? Well, the kind
of comedy we know today as stand up comedy has
been around for a little over one hundred years, but

(14:06):
comedy in general is a lot.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
Older, like two hundred three hundred years old.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Way older than that.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Actually, Oh, I wonder what comedians look like back then.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
Well, Louise, I can think of a really cool example
of comedians and history.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Well, I could tell you, or I could show you.
How about we take a little trip back in time
with the go forward cube?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
Back in time? How far back? Hmm?

Speaker 2 (14:36):
I'm thinking some five hundred years or so? Should do
the trick?

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Five hundred years? Where are we going?

Speaker 2 (14:43):
You're about to find out?

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Whoa, where are we careful with that?

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Pig Luise? Oh sorry, piggy, Let's.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Try to figure out where we are exactly.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Look, here's a flyer, It says art thou ready for
Edinburgh's greatest jester. Why is this English? So weird? Oh? Good?

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Find Edinburgh is in Scotland and that sounds like English
from very old times.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Louise, Oh, okay, so Scotland. Maybe we'll hear some bagpipes.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
That'll be fun.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
What else to this say? If thou saickest laughter, look
no further for Nikola the Queen's fool, shall deliver the
finest entertainment. Queen's fool sounds pretty funny.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Oh, now I know why the go forward que brought
us here. Nikola was the court jester for a very
famous ruler, Mary, Queen of Scots, which means we're somewhere
in the fifteen hundreds.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Whoa, so we're really back in the day of kings
and queens. But wait, you said jester, and so does
this flyer? What did jester?

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Oh, it's basically someone who entertains the king or queen
and performs jokes and funny shows for them.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Oh that's cool. Hey, let's go see Nikola. I bet
she's a lot of fun. Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
If she's the queen's jester, she's probably in the castle,
which is right over that stone wall.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Wait are those actual nights guarding the doors? They certainly
seem to be A good knight always finds another good night.
Oh wait, is that woman over there the jester?

Speaker 2 (16:45):
Correct, that's Nikola, the Queen's fool. I love her outfit,
by the way, it's very colorful.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
So the court jester's job is to make the queen laugh, right, Yeah,
basically that sounds hard.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
But Nikola was so good at her job. She knew
exactly what made the Queen laugh.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
You know, Emily, when I've seen gestures and movies and
TV shows about nights, I just thought they were, I
don't know, kind of silly. But now that I see Nicola,
I see that they're very special.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Oh what makes you say that?

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Well, everyone else in the court is very serious around
the Queen, like they're kind of afraid of her, but
Nikola is the only one who makes her laugh and smile.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Oh that's a great observation. Having the job to entertain
someone that powerful really is a special power. Remember what
Howie said about laughter being away to make us feel
better when we're sad or upset. Comedians have been doing
that ever since they were court jestures.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
That's amazing. I want to do it, Emily, I want
to do my stand up. Now you do? Yep, Let's
go back to the lab so I can keep working
on it before the big day.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
You got it, And now please welcome our next student
for today's talent show. Here to make us all laugh
with some hilarious stand up comedy. It's Louise.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Oh my turn, Good luck, Louise. Hi everyone, I have
a few jokes for you today. You know, I don't
trust theirs. They're always up to something, bless you. Uh well,

(18:37):
let's try something else. I want to hear two short
jokes and a long joke. Joke, joke, joke? Uh okay,
last one. What's the difference between a joke and what?
I haven't finished the joke yet. All right, thank you

(18:58):
very much.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
You got a tough crowd today, Louise, how did you feel,
you know what?

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Not too bad? Actually, if it can happen to Howie Mandel,
it can happen to me too. And I kind of
made them laugh a little at the end.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
That's okay. It's all about practicing, Louise, and having fun
while you do it. You sure you're okay?

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Yep, I'm fine.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Well, congratulations, you were a really brave night today.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Thanks Emily Bow, who knew comedy with such serious business.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
Thanks for joining us on this episode of Growing Up.
I hope this episode made you laugh, smile and learn
about the joy of comedy. Dream big, and always stay curious. Louise,
