Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to Growing Up, a Lingo kids podcast. It helps
kids discover how to be whatever they want to be.
Join us today as we explore perfect recipes to make
jokes and what it takes to get up on a
stage and make people laugh. Let's get started. Hey, Luise,

(00:47):
Oh what a beautiful day it is. I just saw
Maxie running all the way to get that baseball high.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Emily, Yeah, we're u pining catch.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Well, looks like Maxie's a really good catcher.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Actually, you know what animal is better out a baseball game? No?

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Which one?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
A bet?

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Oh? Good one?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Thanks, Emily. My school's having a talent show in a
couple of weeks and I'm gonna be in it.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Oh that sounds fun. Are you telling jokes on stage?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Wow, So you'll be doing a comedy routine.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Oh wow, I didn't know that name comedy routine. Here's
another joke I have. The other day, I was reading
a book about anti gravity and I just couldn't put
it down.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Oh, not bad at all. I think you're ready to go.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Oh, Emily, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Wait, why is that?

Speaker 2 (01:43):
I mean, what if I forget my jokes in front
of everyone? Or what if no one laughs at them.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Emily, Oh, I see, Well, don't worry, Louise. That's called
stage fright, and it's very normal. It is. Yeah, even
grown ups feel that way. But actually I think you'll
do great. After all, you do an amazing job with
our game shows.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Thanks. But at the game shows I have you to
help me out. The talent show is different. I'll be
all bile myself and there's gonna be a light shining
on me and everyone's gonna be staring.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Comedy is one of those things that you can only
really learn how to do by doing it, and it's
really been that way since the beginning of comedy. Oh
and when is that, Emily interesting question? Well, the kind
of comedy we know today as stand up comedy has
been around for a little over one hundred years, but

(02:39):
comedy in general is a lot older, like two hundred
three hundred years old, way older than that.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Actually, Oh, I wonder what comedians look like back then.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Well, Louise, I can think of a really cool example
of comedians and history.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
What is it?

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Well, I could tell you, or I could show you.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
How about we.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Take a little trip back in time with the go
forward cube.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Back in time? How far back.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
H I'm thinking some five hundred years or so should
do the trick?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Five hundred years?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Where are we going? You're about to find out.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Let's go whoa.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Where are we careful with that? Pig Luise?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Oh sorry, Piggy.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Let's try to figure out where we are exactly.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Look, here's a flyer. It says, art, thou ready for
Edinburgh's greatest gesture? Why is this English so weird? Oh? Good?

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Find Edinburgh is in Scotland and that sounds like English
from very old times.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Louise, Oh okay, so Scotland. Maybe we'll hear some bagpie.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
That'll be fun.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
What else to this say? If thou sickest laughter? Look
no further for Nikola the Queen's Fool shall deliver the
finest entertainment. Queen's Fool sounds pretty funny.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Oh now I know why the go forward que brought
us here. Nikola was the court jester for a very
famous ruler, Mary, Queen of Scots, which means we're somewhere
in the fifteen hundreds.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Whoa, so we're really back in the days of kings
and queens. But wait, you said jester, and so does
this flyer? What did jester.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Oh, it's basically someone who entertains the king or queen
and performs jokes and funny shows for them.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Oh that's cool. Hey, let's go see Nikola. I bet
she's a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Let's do it. If she's the queen's jester, she's probably
in the castle, which is right over that stone wall.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Wait are those actual nights guarding the doors?

Speaker 1 (05:09):
They certainly seem to be A good knight always finds
another good night.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Oh wait, is that woman over there the jester?

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Correct, that's Nikola, the Queen's fool. I love her outfit,
by the way, it's very colorful.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
So a court jester's job is to make the queen laugh, right, Yeah,
basically that sounds hard.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
But Nikola was so good at her job she knew
exactly what made the queen laugh.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
You know, Emily, when I've seen gesters and movies and
TV shows about nights, I just thought they were, I
don't know, kind of silly. But now that I see Nicola,
I see that they're very special.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Oh what makes you say that?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Well, everyone else in the court is very serious around
the queen, like they're kind of afraid of her, But
Nikola is the only one who makes her laugh and smile.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Oh that's a great observation. Having the job to entertain
someone that powerful really is a special power. Remember what
Howie said about laughter being away to make us feel
better when we're sad or upset. Comedians have been doing
that ever since they were court jesters.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
That's amazing. I want to do it, Emily. I want
to do my stand up. Now you do. Yep, Let's
go back to the lab so I can keep working
on it before the big day.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
You got it, And now please welcome our next student
for today's talent show. Here to make us all laugh
with some hilarious stand up comedy, it's Louise.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Oh my turn, Good luck Louise. Hi everyone, few jokes
for you today. You know I don't trust theirs. They're
always up to something. Bless you. Uh well, let's try

(07:11):
something else. I want to hear two short jokes and
a long joke. Joke, joke joke?

Speaker 4 (07:19):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Okay, last one. What's the difference between a joke.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
And why?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
I haven't finished the joke yet? All right, thank you
very much.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
You got a tough crowd today, Louise. How did you feel?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
You know what?

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Not too bad.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Actually, if it can happen to Howie Mandel, it can
happen to me too. And I kind of made them
laugh a little at the end.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
That's okay. It's all about practicing, Louise, and having fun
while you do it. You sure you're okay?

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Yep, I'm fine.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Well, congratulations, you were a really brave night today.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Thanks Emily Brow, who knew comedy with such serious business.
