Come on, come on, come on.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Oh, I was so cool to eating all the chocolates
in the universe.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Louise, sweetie, Yes, what do you want for lunch?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Mac and cheese.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
That's what you had yesterday and the day before that.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
But I love mac and cheese. I love them too.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
But we all need to eat the different things so
you can grow big and strong.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
How about some broccoli with mac and cheese? Broccoli?
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Maybe some spinach?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Dan, Why do the veggies always have to be green
and ichy?
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Please? Can I just have the mac and cheese? I like.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I promise I'll eat my veggies later. Okay, okay, fine,
classic mac and cheese it is.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
But next time we're trying broccoli.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Okay, Mom, I'll get that.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Hello, Hi, Louise, it's it's Emily.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Hi, Emily, what's up? Where are you?
Speaker 4 (02:19):
I'm in the middle of well, a ship actually.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
What like in the ocean?
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Yes, near England, England.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
That's super far away.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I want to go. How can we get there?
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Well? I called you just for that. Don't hang up
two two four seven, Emily.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
I can hear you pressing all those butts.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Okay, Louise, hang on tight.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, Emily, what's my phone doing?
Speaker 4 (02:46):
It's going to bring you to where I am? Right now,
come with me.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
Maxy, but gone, Well, where am I?
Speaker 3 (03:03):
The floor's moving a lot and the waves are super strong. Wait, Emily,
is that you up there?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Hi?
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Louise, yep, it's me Just a sec. Let me get
down from here.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
All right?
Speaker 1 (03:18):
How'd everything go with our telephone? I mean our teleporter?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
It was a nice time travel ride. I love this shit, though?
Why are we here?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Well?
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Before answering that question, I'll ask you something did you
have a good lunch before coming.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I did. I had mac and cheese.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Good because your body will turn all that food into
energy for the rest of the day.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, I'm super charged, Emily. But what about those men
over there? They don't look so good.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
You're right, Louise. Those are sailors, part of the ship's crew. Ough,
and unfortunately they're sick.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Oh no, why well, they.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Didn't have good lunches for quite a while. Now.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Actually, what does having lunch have to do with being sick?
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Emially, it has to do with something called nutrition.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Nutrition.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
What's that?
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Nutrition is the science that explains how food keeps us
healthy and running and jumping around.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Oh wow, there's a whole science just for food.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yes, there is, And I want you to remember this
as we are going to come back to food science
in a minute. Right now, there is a doctor on
this ship who is here to help the sailors, So
let's focus.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Okay, Nutrician, I remember.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
This man is doctor James Blend.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
How's he gonna help the sailors?
Speaker 1 (04:45):
He's giving them lemon juice?
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Ah, gross, I'd want to hot chocolate if I was
feeling sick.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Oh well, that does seem tasty. But the thing is,
lemon juice has a special thing that's going to help
change the sailors lives forever. It's called vitamin C.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Oh wow, look, Emily, the magic of lemons.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
The magic of science. Now, let's go through a quick
science lesson.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
I love science and magic me too.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You see, doctor James Lynde saw the sailors looking ill
and realize it was because their lunches were missing a
little something. It was missing lemons were getting there. Yes,
Oh wow. How did the doctor know that? Because doctor
Lynde understood.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Nutrition science behind food exactly, Louise, good memory, A good
nutrition means a balance and healthy diet.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
And oh, these poor fellows didn't have it. And doctor
lynd figured out what was missing from their lunch vitamin C.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
They needed lemons because lemons are vitamins.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
See almost, lemons have vitamin C and many other very
tiny things that we call nutrients nutrients.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
So nutrition comes from nutrients.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Very good, Louise.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Take the mac and cheese you had for lunch, for example,
didn't you say you felt supercharged? It's because pasta's key
nutrients is carbohydrates. We also call them carbs, and carbs
can be like a good dose of sugar.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Carbs make you feel super full of energy. Then that's right. Oh,
but why did my mom want to add some broccoli
to my lunch?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Well, you see, nutrients are like pieces of a puzzle.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
What do you mean, Emily.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
In a puzzle, every piece counts to make the whole picture.
Good nutrition works just like that, but with food, you
need all the right pieces to have a healthy meal lunch.
That means eating different foods at once. The more color
is on your plate, the better.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
So mac and cheese looks very yellow. That means I
gotta have more colorful food to grow healthy and strong.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
And broccoli is so so green like forest green.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
You're on the right track, Luise. Your mom knows that
broccoli is super rich and a nutrient called fiber and
many other things that your body needs. So broccoli with
pasta makes your meal balanced. Yep, Okay, I think we're
done with this mini science lesson.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
So that's why grown ups talk about having balanced meals
and get grumpy when I don't eat veggies.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yes, exactly, because they want you to be healthy.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Wow, that's super fun. It's like making a very colorful
drawing every time you eat, Yes, exactly that.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Thanks for dagging along on this episode of Growing up
about nutritionists, the food experts that make sure we eat
healthy and balanced meals. Remember, little listener, dream big, and
always stay curious. Luise, Are you ready for more adventure?
