Speaker 1 (00:03):
Last time on growing up, Emily and Luis talked to
the awesome firefighter Trent Maxwell, better known as Maxie. No,
not you, Maxie, though we love you too. Now they've
traveled back in time to learn all about the history
of firefighting. But the big question is where will their
magical time traveling cube take them?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Now?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Wow, I feel kind of dizzy.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Time traveling is riding a roller coaster.

Speaker 5 (01:01):
I'm sure we'll get used to it, Louise.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I hope so, because a good night has to be
a good time traveler exactly.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
So where are we, Emily?

Speaker 6 (01:12):
Well, Louise, after you told me about your visit to
the fire station, I thought it'd be cool to visit
another one here in Chicago, which is very very special.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
So this is a fire station, but Emily, I see
no fire trucks here. How can it be a fire
station without a truck?

Speaker 6 (01:31):
Oh well, that's because it's the year eighteen seventy eight.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Oh so there were no trucks back then, I mean
back now. I'm so confused.

Speaker 6 (01:41):
Okay, yes, well right now in eighteen seventy eight, the
firefighters around us are part of a fire company called
Engine Company twenty one.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Cool name.

Speaker 6 (01:53):
Yes, they were the first all black fire company in Chicago.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
That's awesome. Wait, oh Maxi, is that you?

Speaker 5 (02:03):
Oh I don't think so, Louise.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
He probably stayed back.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
In the present.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
Oh right.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Oh, and this dog looks very different from Maxie like
his black spots.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Does this dog work with the firefighters?

Speaker 5 (02:18):
Yes, exactly.

Speaker 6 (02:19):
This tall fella is called a Dalmatian, and it's a
very special dog because it's really good at running next
to horses.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Oh, so that's why there's horses over there in the corner.
So they used to carry the water hose on the carriage.

Speaker 6 (02:33):
They did so when they rode the carriage to the
sight of the fire, they would bring a few dalmatians
with them. They would run in front of the carriage
to clear the way for the horses so that they
would get there faster.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Oh that's smart.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
I wonder if MAXI could run next to a horse.
He and I love the fight dragons, so this should
be easy peasy for him.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
Oh, I'm sure he'd love it.

Speaker 6 (02:56):
So anyway, it's because of horses that we have one
of the most famous fire station inventions.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Oh what's that?

Speaker 5 (03:04):
Well, I think we're gonna find out just to bat.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Well, what's happening? Is there a fire? Looks like it?

Speaker 5 (03:14):
And look over there, what do you see?

Speaker 4 (03:17):
All the firefighters are sliding down that pole.

Speaker 6 (03:21):
Yes, now you got to slide down a pole at
the fire station for your field trip.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Right.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
Do you know why firefighters do that?

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Oh, I know this to get to the fire truck faster. Exactly.

Speaker 6 (03:33):
Many fire stations used to have spiral staircases to go
up to the firefighter's rooms. But if it isn't easy
for one person to run quickly down a spiral staircase,
it's even harder for an entire crew to do it.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
Oh, so that's why they chose to slide down a
pole instead. Exactly.

Speaker 6 (03:52):
You see, where there's horses, there's hay, and fire stations
usually had a pole to help push around the hay.
So one crewmember said, Hey, if we slide down this thing,
we'll get down here a lot faster.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Oh can I try sure?

Speaker 6 (04:08):
It looks like the firefighters are all geared up and
ready to go.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Want to join them?

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Of course?

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Wait, let me put on a fire jacket and helmet too. Okay,
we're all set, let's go.

Speaker 5 (04:19):
Louise, do you want to ring the bell.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
There's a bell. Yes, please attention, attention coming through. We
have a fire to get to. How did these guys
know where to go without bone maps?

Speaker 6 (04:34):
Well they really had to know the city quite well.
Plus when there's a fire, you can always just follow
the smoke. Oh look, I can see it just around
the corner, which means we're almost there.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Oh wow, the fires The fire's huge.

Speaker 6 (04:57):
Yeah it is, but don't worry. Look that man over
there is dragging the fire hose as close as he
can get, and the other ones going up a ladder
to rescue someone on the second floor.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Wow, they're doing it. You guys are amazing.

Speaker 6 (05:11):
Look they rescued everyone in just in time too, because
the building's about too.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Who just in time?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Wait, so we were able to get here in time
thanks to the firefighters.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Poll.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Yeah, it's a huge help.

Speaker 6 (05:28):
After this fire crew added that pole to the station,
they were able to.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
Put on all their gear and be ready to go
in eleven seconds.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Wow. That's impressive.

Speaker 5 (05:38):
It is.

Speaker 6 (05:38):
And remember this was the first all black firefighting company
in Chicago, and because they became one of the fastest
fire companies to respond to emergencies, the whole town started
to appreciate them, and that's when the firefighter's pole started
to be used all over the world.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Plus, it's always super fun to slide down.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Yeah it is.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
Now let's go home and let them get back to
work saving the kittens of Chicago.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Let's go. Well, Louise, what do you think that was awesome?

Speaker 3 (06:22):
I wish I had a fire pome in my house
so I could slide down to dinner from my room
in eleven seconds too.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
That would be pretty cool.

Speaker 6 (06:30):
So, Louise, now that you've learned even more about firefighting,
do you still.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
Want to be one when you grow up?

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Yes, definitely.

Speaker 6 (06:39):
Just remember you have to be very brave if you
want to save cats and dogs and birds and people.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Too well, a good night must always.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
Be brave nuts the Spirit.
