Looking for a fun and educational way to celebrate #WorldEngineeringDay? Tune in to our latest podcast episode and join Cowy and her friends as they design the perfect playground!

Cowy loves to play, but she finds her current playground too busy and loud. So, her friends decide to help her come up with a design that is just right for her.

Does your child dream of a playground with more slides, open spaces, or quiet corners? In this episode of 'Stories for Kids', kids can learn about the engineering design process and how to think like an engineer. They can even brainstorm new ideas for Cowy's playground!

Check out our previous episode, “Think like an Engineer”, to get inspired. Let us know what your child’s dream playground looks like! #WorldEngineeringDay

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mees whoo.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Hei Jane.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Oops, sorry you got me? This playground is loud.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
You're in Elliott.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Oh sorry, Oops, it's okay. I think I'm going to
sit on the bench.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
This is a pretty busy playground. Huh, Cowie, Yes, and loud.
Seems like it's too loud for you. Cowie, yes, I
think you're not loving it here.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Do you want to talk about it?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well, this playground makes me kind of quiet.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
I can tell you're feeling quiet anything.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Else, I feel a little bit like Heidi.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Lingo Kids listeners, let's help Kwie out. Welcome to Storytime
by Lingo Kids, where we discover fascinating facts about the
world around us and the fun of play learning. Today,
we will talk about playgrounds and how kids like and
don't like different things, even at playgrounds. What would you

(01:09):
have on a playground if you could have anything you wanted?

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Head's up, Callie balling?

Speaker 5 (01:25):
Oh Callie, are you okay?

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (01:29):
But I do not like this playground. It's too wild
and it's too loud. But that's what makes it so fun.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Callie.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
You're saying that you feel uncomfortable here, but Lisa, you
love it.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Hi, Billy Callie hates.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
It here, good idea, Billy, Let's design a brand new
playground that Cowie likes.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Thanked, But what's a sign?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Design? It means to think up an idea and plan
it all.

Speaker 5 (02:03):
Yeah, let's make you a magnificent, wonderful playground, Callie. We're
going to assign it. Oops, I mean design it.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Okay, thanks everyone?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Great, this will be fun. So we know we want
Calie to love the playground we design. Where shall we begin?

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Ask Calie questions?

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Okay, I got one, Callie. What's your favorite color?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
I love all colors. I especially like yellow.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Great.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
Let's make a note of that. Cawie likes yellow.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
Great?

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Start everyone, Let's ask some questions about what she wants
in her new playground or how she wants to feel
when she's there.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Cawie, what do you want in your new playground?

Speaker 4 (02:57):
How do you want to feel there?

Speaker 5 (02:59):
Probably it's c did and happy and crazy.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Great questions, But Lisa, I think that's how you want
to feel.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Let's check with Cowie about how she.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Wants to feel. It might be different.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
I want to feel cozy and messy. I want to
do something with colors.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
Wants cozy feeling, wants messy art Cowie.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Do you like it when it's loud or quiet? I
like quiet.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
I will make a note likes quiet, Cowie.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Do you like playing with friends or being alone?

Speaker 3 (03:45):
I love playing with friends, but sometimes I like to
be alone alone.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yep with my imagination.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Thanks for sharing with Cowie and great questions.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Everyone.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Let's look again at Cowie's answers and then start thinking
of ideas for Cowie's perfect playground.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Al Eric, here's what we have.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
Likes yellow, wants to feel cozy, likes messy art, also quiet,
loves playing with friends.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
And also not playing with friends.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
That's me, all right, everyone, Now let's think of ideas.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I think Cowe needs a cave.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Yeah, but not a scary cave, a cozy cave with
a little window that sounds nice.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
And how about a spot for drawling with chalk?

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, Cowie really loves art, so it should be extra big.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
My first chalk picture will be a picture you. Elliott Shucks.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
Is swinging a good by yourself activities?

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Maybe we should have.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Things I love to swing? Yay?

Speaker 5 (05:11):
How built Cowie the longest swing heaver.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
You are going to feel so comfortable.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Thanks Lisa.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
That is really thoughtful, Lisa. But Before you build the
longest swing ever, remember that a good design needs to
include careful measurements so that everything fits and.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
So it's safe. Longest doesn't mean best.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Oh, instead of making the longest swing ever, how about
making one that's just right, long enough that it's fun
to swing on, but short enough that you don't accidentally
swing into friends walking.

Speaker 5 (05:48):
Okay, we can measure it so it's just right.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Great plan, Lisa, We are making a pretty amazing design.
Did you know there are some grown ups who design
spaces just like this for their jobs?

Speaker 5 (06:04):
No?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Wow, really, yes, it's true. They're called urban engineers.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Urban engineers, that's right.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
An urban engineer is someone who designs a city or neighborhood.
They help decide where to put streets, if the place
needs a swimming pool or not, if it should.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Have a bike path or a parking lot.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
I've never thought about who decides about streets? How do
they know?

Speaker 2 (06:33):
By asking questions, trying out an idea, and then working
to make it even better.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's just like other engineers.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yep, that's right. Okay, time to draw plans for Cowie's playground.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
We can see crans. Fuck, that looks good.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
We could put that here okay? Or how about over here?

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Oh yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Thanks everyone, this playground design is the best kids at home.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
What would you put in your dream playground design?

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Let us know and share your designs via email to
podcast at Lingo Kids dot com ask a grown up
to help.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Lingo Kids listeners.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Thank you for joining the gang as they planned out
a playground for Cali. We learned that a good design
starts with asking questions and trying ideas, and also an
important part of engineering is measuring to make sure it's safe.
We also learned that not everyone likes the same things.
That's what makes different people so wonderful. If you are

ready for interactive play learning time, explore our Lingo Kids app.
It offers fun and educational songs and games to help
kids ages two and older learn and develop important skills
such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. That's the
power of play learning. See you in our next episode.
