Juis story.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
This story you're about to enjoy was inspired by Sawyer.
Thank you so much for your awesome idea. It seemed
like forever since Levi's parents had left with Ivy. He
just wanted to know when they would be back, but
all he could do was wait patiently by the front door, hoping.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
They'd be home any minute.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
His papa tried to take his mind off the waiting
by playing board games, video games, making puzzles, and even
letting him have all the ice cream he wanted, but
Levi didn't feel like eating, and he couldn't concentrate on
anything other than Ivy. It seems like now would be
a good time to fill you in a bit on
what happened earlier that day.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
It was a Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Morning when Levi and Ivy decided they would make an
obstacle course in their playroom while they waited for their
parents to get out of bed. This was something they
had done one hundred times, but what happened this day
was something they had never experienced before. I think we
need a few more pillows over here, called out Levi's
he built an obstacle out of his wooden blocks. You're right,
answered Ivy, and I think we should do a floor's
(01:33):
lava type setup over here by the toy box. These
couch cushions will be perfect. Levi and Ivy worked quickly
to put together the best obstacle course they could.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Knowing that their parents may.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Have a problem with a few of the obstacles, they
wanted a chance to run through the course at least
once before their parents got up. Are you finished, asked
Levi's he put the last wooden block in place. I
think so, said Ivy as she placed the last couch
cushion on the floor. That looks really difficult, Levi commented
when he looked up and saw what Ivy had created.
(02:03):
His sister had made a bridge out of a tumbling
map from one of the chairs in the playroom to
the couch. Ivy explained that it was totally safe and
started to tell Levi how to go through that part
of the course she had created. After making a past
your wooden block tower, you'll jump on this chair, began
Ivy with a lot of enthusiasm. Then once you crossed
the bridge to the couch, you'll hop three times to
reach the other side. Next, it's just a simple hop
(02:25):
to the coffee table before you reach the floor in
Lava area, simple, Levi. I looked at her set up
one more time and knew that jumping onto a coffee
table was not something they should be doing. It had
kind of a slippery top, and when they tried to
do it once before, their parents said someone could get
hurt and made them remove that part of.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
The obstacle course.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Ivy, I don't think we should jump from the couch
to the coffee table, said LEVI. Remember what mom and
dad said last week. It's not safe. It'll be fine,
Ivy went on as she walked to the starting line
of the obstacle course. They only thought it would be
unsafe if we jumped on it with our socks off,
because the top of the table is slippery. We'll just
take our socks off and we'll be all set. And
(03:07):
as Ivy explained her idea to Levi, she took off
her socks and tossed them into the corner of the playroom.
Are we ready to start now, Ivy asked as she
got ready at the starting line. Levi I couldn't help
but think Ivy did have a point about taking off
their socks to make the obstacle course run a bit safer,
But as he thought about it more, he really felt
they should listen to their parents and not jump onto
(03:27):
the coffee table at all. I really don't think we should,
Levi started to say, as Ivy interrupted him.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
It'll be fine, Levi said. Ivy.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Then she counted down from three and took off from
the starting line. She started off very fast and easily
got through the first set of obstacles that she and
Levi had set up, and as they always did, Levi
started to count out loud to see how long it took.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Ivy to get through the course.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
She zoomed through the playroom, dodging pillows, sacks of toys,
and bouncy balls that were set up all over. Ivy
took a sharp turn around the craft table and headed
for Levi's wooden block tower. She carefully made her way
over the tower without making a single block wobble. Then
she was ready for her special part of the course.
She jumped onto the big chair and carefully made her
way across the tumbling map bridge she had created. Once
(04:16):
on the couch, she took three big hops and easily
made it to the other side in two seconds. Levi
was really impressed. Wow, she's gonna be her best time
for sure, Levi thought to himself as he continued to
count out loud. But he knew what was coming up
next and suddenly felt a bit nervous. It was the
kind of nervous when you know someone needs your help
and you need to step in, and that's just what
(04:38):
he did, But unfortunately it was too late. Ivy stop
called out Levi as he watched his sister leap from
the couch toward the coffee table. However, she didn't hear
him because she was so focused on completing the obstacle
course in record time. Then as soon as her foot
hit the coffee table, Levi knew it wasn't going to
end well. Ivy's foot slipped on the shiny surface of
the table and went crashing to the ground. Most of
(05:00):
her landed on one of the big pillows that she
had laid on the ground, but her legs slammed against
the edge of the table, and that's when Levi heard it,
a very loud crap. He quickly looked at the table,
which didn't have a scratch on it, and that's when
he knew that cracking down had to have come from
Ivy's leg. Oh no, called out Levi as Ivy grabbed
her leg, crying and calling for her parents. They were
(05:22):
just getting up and hearing Ivy's calls, ran to the
playroom as quickly as possible. After checking on Ivy, they
knew they had to get her to the hospital because
they suspected she broke her leg. They called Levi's papa
to watch him while they took Ivy, and once they
saw doctor, they called home to let Levi know Ivy
was doing.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Well but had broken her leg.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
She's going to be at the hospital for a little
while longer because she needs a cast. Levi's dad told
his son she'll be okay, but this is why we
told you guys not to play so rough in the playroom.
I'm sorry, dad, said Levi, holding back tears. He was
so sad that Ivy got hurt and felt he should
have tried harder to stop her. It's okay, Levi said
his dad. We'll just go over some new playroom rules
(06:01):
with you and Ivy when we get home. Levi continued
to wait by the front door until he heard his
parents car pull up outside. He then ran out the
door and into the driveway. He opened the back door
of the car and saw Ivy and his mom sitting
in the backseat. Ivy was very tired from a very
busy day and had fallen asleep. Levi whispered to his
mom to ask how she was. She gave him a
thumb up and whispered for him to go back in
(06:23):
the house and they'll be in shortly. As soon as
Ivy's dad carried her into the house. Since she was
still getting used to her crutches, there was a rush
of activity to make sure she was comfortable and happy. Also,
Levi noticed she was holding a new doll.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Where did you get that? Asked Levi.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Mom and dad bought it for me at the hospital,
said Ivy as she yawned and tried to get comfortable
in the couch. Levi was wondering if his parents had
brought him anything, but quickly saw that they didn't have
any bags or other toys in their hands.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
That's okay, thought Levi to himself.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
I had a rough morning too, being so worried about Ivy,
but she is the one who got hurt.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
That wouldn't be the.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Only time Levi had to tell himself that the treatment
Ivy was getting was totally deserved, even if he felt
it wasn't. And over the next week, Levi I would
get a lesson in jealousy compassionate kindness.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Levi called out his mom from the kitchen, Can you please.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Go see what Ivy wants? She's ringing her bell again.
This was all too familiar request that Levi had heard
over and over and over again since Ivy had broken
her leg. He had been interrupted countless times since she
got home to run and see what she needed. At first,
it was fine, and he enjoyed doing it. After all,
he felt it was somewhat his fault that she got hurt.
But now, instead of feeling like he wanted to help Ivy,
(07:36):
he started to feel jealous. What now, Ivy, Levi snapped
as he walked into her room.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I am sorry, Levi.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
I didn't mean for you to have to run up here,
said Ivy, sensing Levi was a little annoyed. I thought
mom would come up. I just need to take my medicine.
My leg is really starting to hurt again. Levi should
have felt bad that Ivy was in pain, but he
had stopped listening. Once Ivey mentioned her medicine and he
shout it down to his mom. Her request, she shouted
back for him to please come get it and bring
it up to Ivy. Levi sighed and without a word,
(08:04):
left Ivy's room to get her medicine. Here you go,
said Levi, handing a small cup of medicine to Ivy.
Thank you, said Ivy, sounding verian sincere. I'm sorry if
this is a bother for you, leeve I just rolled
his eyes, which made Ivy feel terrible. She didn't want
her brother to be upset with her. She really just
wanted him to play with her and.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Not run off.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Do you want me to get you anything else? Levi
then whispered to himself as he turned to leave more
new toys cookies in another ice cream Sunday. It's true,
Ivy had been getting a lot of attention, lots of
new toys, and lots of treats from friends and family
who were coming over to visit her and wish her
a super speedy recovery. This left Levi feeling jealous and
upset that he had to watch it all happen. Ivy
(08:50):
heard what Levi said, and it made her feel sad.
She really missed playing with her brother and didn't like
at all that she couldn't ride her bike, go swimming,
or run around outside. But Levi I didn't know that
because he never asked. He just saw Ivy getting toys
and treats and he didn't like it, Levi said Ivy
in a quiet voice. But her brother just kept walking
out of the room. He was frustrated with ivy situation,
(09:13):
and it was only going to get worse. Levi asked
over and over as the day went on to help
his sister, LEVI, can you get Ivy the TV remote? LEVI,
can you give Ivy this card that came in the
mail for her. Ivy, Ivy, Ivy, shouted Levi in his room.
That's all anyone cares about around here.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
What about me?
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Ivy's so lucky. She gets whatever she wants whenever she wants.
All because she broke her leg, it doesn't even seem
that bad. She just gets to lie around all day.
As Levi sat in his room pouting, his dad walked
in and told him his papa was coming over soon
to watch him while they took Ivy back to the doctor.
She had an appointment to check and see how her
leg was healing. Fine, fine, okay, Levi said, and continued
(09:55):
to play with his cars. As he played, though, he
heard a noise coming from Ivy's room next door. It
sounded like she was crying, and no matter how upset
Levi was feeling about ivy situation, he couldn't just sit
there and let his sister cry, so he walked into
her room to see what was wrong. Why are you crying, Ivy,
Levi asked as he stood in her doorway. I'm just
(10:17):
I'm just really upset, said Ivy between sobs. I'm tired
of laying in this bed. I can't watch one more
show or play one more video game. I'm tired of.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Not being able to play and run around.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
My leg hurts, and this cast is really uncomfortable, and
I'm lonely. Every time I try to talk to you,
it seems like you don't want to hang out with me,
like you're mad at me, and that makes me feel
really sad. Levi I couldn't believe what he was hearing.
He thought laying around and watching TV all day would
be great. He thought toys and treats and cards from
friends and family would make Ivy forget all about her
leg hurting.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
But since he never asked Ivy how she was feeling,
he never really knew the truth.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Levi. I let his jealousy stop him from seeing what
was right in front of him, his sister Ivy, who
needed her big brother her side.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Ivy, I am really sorry.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Said Levy, walking over and sitting on her bed. I
didn't realize your legs still hurt. I didn't realize you
were bored, or that you wanted to hang out with me.
I should have asked how you were feeling, but instead
I got jealous of all the attention you were getting
and that made me act unkind and want to keep
my distance. Thank you for saying that, Levi. I kind
(11:26):
of thought that's what was going on, said Ivy. And
if you had asked, I could have told you that
all the treats, toys and TV in the world couldn't
make having a broken leg fun. I just wish this
never happened. I should have listened to you and not
jumped on the coffee table. You're right, but it was
a pretty cool obstacle. And I think if you hadn't
(11:46):
broken your leg, you definitely would have beat your best time,
said Levi, trying to make his sister smile. It worked
in a big smile spread across Ivy's face. Levi felt
the feeling of jealousy going away and feeling of compassion
and kindness take over. At that moment, he didn't want
to do anything else but help Ivy and stay right
by her side. He knew what he had to do
(12:07):
and asked his parents to call his papa and tell
him he didn't have to come over and watch him.
I'd like to go to Ivy's doctor's appointment with her,
said Levi. Please sure, Levi, that's really nice of you.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Said his mom.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
I'm glad to see that you'd want to help your sister.
After all, it would be easy for you to feel
jealous because she's getting a lot of attention, but you're
a great big brother. I'm sure she really appreciates your kindness.
I really do, whispered Ivy to Levi, because if there's
one thing I know is that we're stronger together. And
if you're by my side, even with a broken leg,
(12:40):
I'll have a good time and can get through it.
From that day on, Levi helped out Ivy whenever he
could until she got her cast removed, and even after that,
he stood by Ivy's side, protecting his little sister and
doing all he could so she never got hurt like
that again. Because Ivy was right, they were stronger together.
Thank you so much, Sawyer, what a great story idea.
