Yuis story. Even the smallest words and actions can make
a difference, changing the course of someone's day and setting
a ripple effect of good deeds spreading through their life
and the lives of others around them. This is a
story of when Levi and Ivy learned a very important

lesson about how thinking of others and showing kindness has
the power to change the world.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Levi and Ivy have always loved helping others.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
They'd go out of their way to do extra chores
at home, help friends with their class work in school,
and include new kids in their games at the park,
show good manners, and do all they could to make
their community better. Sometimes that meant holding the door for
someone at the store when their hands were filled with
bags and packages.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Sometimes that meant.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Raking their neighbors leaves to meeting up their yard, or
shoveling their sidewalk after a snowstorm without being asked. And
sometimes that just meant saying hello to someone as they
walked down the street. Levi and Ivy loved doing all
these things, but lately they wondered if it really made
a difference. They of course knew that life got busy
and that could make people feel like they didn't have
(01:39):
the time to help others or do a kind deed,
not knowing that even the littlest things can make a
big difference. For example, Levi and Ivy noticed one day
that they said hello to a man they passed on
the sidewalk, but the man didn't say hello in return. Instead,
he continued to stare at his phone and walk quickly
on his way. Levi and Ivy noticed that one time
(02:00):
they didn't get a thank you when they held open
a door for a woman at the store, But these
interactions didn't change their attitude. They loved helping others and
nothing could change that. However, they couldn't help, but wonder
sometimes did their kindness really.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Make a difference. Levi and I are running to the.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Park, called out Ivy as she and her brother grabbed
their kites from the garage one cool fall day. Their
mom and dad were planning flowers in the front yard
as they were leaving, and shouted out to them to
stay together and come home in about an.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Hour for lunch.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Okay, called out Levi as he and Ivy set off
for the park. As they walked along, Levi and Ivy
talked about their day, how it was the perfect day
for flying kites because it was windy but not too windy,
and as they got closer to the park, they could
see that some other kids had the same idea. One
little boy in particular was laughing and cheering as his
kite sword higher and higher, but all of a sudden,
(02:51):
the wind stopped and his kite went crashing into the
tree and got stuck.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
The little boy's.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Parents were busy at the playground nearby with the little
boy's sister and said they would be over in a
bit to help him get his kite back. Seeing this,
Levi and Ivy knew what the nice thing to do
would be. They ran over to the little boy and
asked if he would like some help getting his kite.
That would be great, said the little boy, pointing up
to the tree.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
But how are you gonna get it all the way
up there?
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Levi and Ivy had been going to their neighborhood park
for a long time, and they had become excellent tree
climbers in no time at all. Levi made his way
up the branches and grabbed a hold of the kite,
being very careful not to tear it as he wiggled
it free from the tree. He dropped it down to Ivy,
who caught it and handed it to the little boy,
who could have not been happier. Thank you, thank you,
called up the little boy as he ran off with

his kite and began flying it once again. See Levi,
it does make a difference, said Ivy, going back to
the conversation she had been having with her brother earlier
that day. Doing good deeds and helping others makes everyone happy.
We're happy we helped, and that little boy is happy
to have his kite back. Our good deed created happiness
all around. You're right, answered Levi as he made his

way down from the tree. But I wonder what happens after,
What do you mean, asked Ivy. Don't get me wrong,
I'm happy to help out at the moment and that's enough,
explained Levi. But I wonder if the things we do
affect the people we help in the future, Like does
our good deed make that person do a good deed
for someone else? That's an interesting question, said Ivy.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
But I think we just.

Have to be okay with not knowing the answer and
just keep doing good deeds and helping others because it's
the right thing to do. You're right, replied Levi with
a big smile. Let's go fly our kites. Levi and
Ivy then ran off and flew kites for quite a
little while. As they ran around the park, watching their
colorful kites dance and soar through the sky, they started
to get a little tired. They decided to go and

take a rest on a bench at the end of
the park. As they did, the wind picked up and
rustled the leaves around them. The leaves were picked up
into the air and spun around them, forming a funnel
that seemed to follow them. The spinning leaves surrounded Levi
and Ivy as they had a secret to share. Levi
and Ivy looked at each other as the wind scattered
the red, yellow, and orange.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Leaves all around them. It seemed almost magical.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Then all of a sudden, the wind calmed down and
the leaves fell back down the ground, wrestling silently as
they had before. Wow, that was pretty cool, said Ivy
as she took a seat on the bench. Sure was,
answered Levi as he sat behind her sister, swinging his
feet back and forth until he felt his sneaker hit
something under the bench. Levi then got up to see
(05:30):
what it was and discovered a journal lying on the ground.
He picked it up to show Ivy, and together.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
They opened it up. Oh no, someone must have left
this behind when they.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Were at the park, said Ivy. It's such a nice
looking journal. I'm sure they'd want it back. Let's see
if there's a name written inside, so we can try
and return it, said Levi. The light blue journal was
trimmed in gold and looked like something out of a
fairy tale. The pages had rough, torn edges that made
it look very old and As Levi and Ivy opened
the cover, it was as if light glowed from the
(06:00):
pages inside. Levi and Ivy smiled as they read what
they saw. No, it wasn't the name of the person
that owned the journal, and it wasn't a phone number
written inside to call if the journal got lost. Instead,
what they saw was page after page of heartfield notes,
written in all different handwriting, with all different pens and pencils,
describing small acts of kindness, simple things like a smile,
(06:22):
a kind word, or a small gesture that brightened people's
days in unexpected ways. Levi and Ivy couldn't help reading
through the journal, getting an overwhelming feeling that it was
put there for them to find, and as they read,
they were filled with a feeling of great joy. It
was as if the journal was telling them the answer
to the question they thought they'd never get. Good deeds
did have a long term impact on people, And as
(06:44):
they continued to read, they started to notice that they
knew some of the people that had written their stories
in the journal. They recognized those people because the good
deeds they were writing.

About were done by them.

Oh my gosh, exclaimed Levi as he read one of
the journal and out loud. This one is from mister Garrett,
our next door neighbor. It read September eighth.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
I have the best.

Neighbors ever, Levi and I be stopped by today and
helped me water all of my plants outside. It's a
lot for me to do all by myself lately, and
I hope they know how much I appreciated it. It
made me feel so happy to be thought of that
I decided to drive over to my friend's house and
help him with some gardening work that he's been.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Telling me he's been doing in his yard. Wow.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Not only did our good deed make mister Garrett feel
appreciated and thought of, but it made him go out
of his way and help.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Someone else, said Levi. He spread kindness.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
That means our good deed led to another good deed,
said Ivy with a smile. Realizing the power of being
kind and doing nice things for other they read on
September eighth, my good friend Pete Garrett stopped over at
my house today, completely out of the blue, to help
me with some gardening work. What a great friend. It
made me want to do something nice for someone else.
I gathered up some things in my house that I
(08:02):
was no longer using and donated them to others in need.
Levi and Ivy couldn't believe what they were reading. They
were seeing the ripple effect of their one good deed
in every journal that followed, showing them that if they
hadn't helped mister Garrett, all of those other things would
have never happened, and all the other people that benefited
from those good deeds never would have had those experiences,
(08:24):
experiences that really seemed to positively impact their lives. Levi
and Ivy noticed more and more journal entries with their
names in them. They read an entry in the journal
from a woman they helped at the grocery store when
she couldn't reach some food on a high shelf. They
read another written by a boy at their school who
was very shy but also so grateful when Levi and
Ivy invited him to sit at their table and play
(08:45):
with them at recess. He went on to write about
how that made him feel welcomed and how he started
interacting more and more in school because he saw how
kind other kids can be. As they read on, they
saw an entry written by the person they had said
hello to on the sidewalk last week that only stared
at his phone, never saying anything back. He wrote that
he was on his way to a big business meeting

and he was texting about it when Levi and Ivy
said hello, He was distracted and didn't reply because he
had a lot on his mind. However, he felt bad
afterwards and hoped Levi and Ivy weren't upset. Instead, he
wanted them to know that them saying hello made him
feel good, reminding him that sometimes doing a kind act
only takes a second and can make someone stay better.

He was sure to say hello to everyone he walked
by for the rest of the day and the days
that followed, hoping to pass on some good energy. Levi
and Ivy kept reading and found another entry written by
the woman whom Levi had held.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
The door for, who didn't say thank you.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
She wrote that a very nice little boy held the
door for her, saying the act was so thoughtful and considerate. However,
she had lost her voice because she was so sick,
and it made her sad thinking the little boy didn't
hear her.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Say thank you. In her low, quiet voice.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
She wrote, I hope he knows how thankful I was,
and how his good deed made me smile. Levi and
Ivy spent the rest of their time at the park
reading the journal until they got to the last entry,
which was from the little boy who had.

Just helped get his kite out of the tree.

They placed the journal back under the park bench where
Levi and Ivy had found it, hoping it would brighten
someone else's day in the future. With their hearts full,
Levi and Ivy set off for home and now with
the answer to their question, did their kindness really make
a difference? They knew the real reason to continue their
good deeds not to be thanked, not to be noticed
or rewarded, but to spread kindness from one person to
