Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Magic Insiders with Dante Marctelli and Jae Chapman.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Step back over, Durrance shot us up up, Carrol drills
it and the far change for a three point great
big time bag cam Fort headed.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Back the way, a steal by Franz Fonner to run
out the fog and get my to it Froz Fagner
and the fourth quarter. I'm Michael.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
This is your daily destination for all the latest on
the Orlando match.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Over to win down. Now back to Kalon. He's gonna
try another three, take out another one forty seconds man,
Carol Jumper. Whoo.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local
diamond experts since nineteen eighty one. And now here are
your hosts, Dante Marcitelli and Jake Chapman.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
And Welcomember, one of those Magic Insiders contented by International
Diamond Center, Dante Marcitelli and Jake Chapman here with you. Unfortunately,
sadly for one final time. This will officially be the
final installment of Magic Insiders for this season. As the
Magic fall in Game five one, twenty to eighty nine,
and it was much closer than that at halftime forty
(01:13):
nine to forty seven. In fact, the Orlando Magic had
a two point lead. They led by nine at one
point in the first half, and then the floodgates open
in that third quarter. Thirty six to thirteen was the
third quarter for the Boston Celtics, or the Boston Celtics
went four to six from three in the first half.
It was a masterclass on how to defend the Celtics
from beyond the arc. But they still shot fifty two percent,
(01:35):
had a bunch of points in the paint, were only
down two after one half of play. The Magic offense
never came out of the locker room, as unfortunately has
been the problem much of this year. And Jake, I
have to start with this. So much was thrown at
this Magic team all year. So much was thrown at them,
with the injuries, with everything that came their way, and
then the struggles shooting, just mighty mighty struggle shooting and
(01:59):
all the things that they had to overcome. You lose
your two best players at different points throughout the year,
and then Jalen and Franz who had never got back,
and you still battle, you get the play in. I mean,
there were so many exciting parts of the season, and
then there were so many parts of the season where
it's like, oh, you know, how much more can they take?
So through it all, they should have left TD Garden
(02:20):
with their heads held high because they battled, they fought.
The only reason you won a game in the series,
the only reason you were there in that having a
chance to win a game five, was because of how
hard you play and the character of everyone in the
of every individual on that team. However, last night was
a microcosm of the entire season. All the things that
went wrong last night were the things that plagued the
(02:42):
Magic the entire year. Third quarters woeful, thirty six to thirteen.
Your shooting, you're shooting was abysmal again last night, thirty
seven and a half percent. In an elimination game, you
shoot thirty seven percent. Three point shooting has been a
nightmare the entire year. They'll now finish as a historically
bad three point shooting team, eight for thirty eight from
(03:03):
beyond the arc. So you give yourself a chance because
of how hard you play and because of the character
of the individuals. But there are some flaws. There are
some flaws that need to be addressed and cleaned up
this summer. But all in all, they should they should
feel pretty proud for they, right, don't you think, Jake.
They pushed Boston, they gave Boston all they could handle,
and unfortunately it came to an end last night.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, very well, put D.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
I shared those sentiments to be sure, you know, I
came away from that game last night feeling proud of
the of the guys, proud of the fight all season long,
knowing that that sometimes in sports, you know, your best
laid plans go sideways because of things.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Like freakish oblique tears to your two best players, a
Trucolia injury which I had never even heard of, and
look and Mo Wagner slipping basically in December, and Terry
and acl which is a massive, massive blow to him
and his career and was to this season as well.
And yet still you think about the highs of Opening
(04:04):
Night against Miami, smacking them around with that might have
eventually meant for their season. Pollo's fifty. The injuries, the comebacks,
the setbacks, the bouncebacks, as has been the case since
Jamal Mosley has been our head coach, and it took
a while to get to the point where you were competing.
But man, every time this team's back into a corner,
they come back out swing it, and they fight their
(04:25):
way out of the corner, and they fight their way
off the mat. And last night it felt like in
that third quarter it just sort of all the avalanche
kind of just sort of just sort of fell on you.
All the house of cards that you'd been building is
sort of toppled. And so and but D you're right like,
which had twenty six percent from three for the series,
twenty one percent in the game deciding game in the
(04:47):
series deciding game five miss free throws again last night,
and and it is it's the fatal flaw of this
particular group. The good news is it's definitely fixable. The
good news is you do have your or in place.
The good news is Jalen Zuggs is going to be
back and hopefully better than ever. But I think, you know,
we saw probably you know, even as as Poll and
(05:10):
Franz came back in January and then into the All
Star break and it didn't immediately get better. It was like, Okay,
maybe there does need to be some sort of an adjustment.
Those two guys are so good that if the surrounding
cast is not better offensively next year, and that includes
the guys that are here and might come back and
maybe potential moves, that it feels like we're getting to
(05:33):
the point now where we might be wasting their time, right.
I mean, those guys are ready to win now and
ready to play deep into the playoffs now, And that's
not to discourage or or diminish anybody else on the team,
but it's a star driven league and we have two
of them. So it was frustrating, and we'll get into
(05:54):
the files. I'm sure Paula didn't play the whole third
quarter after two and a half minutes, picked up three
personal fouls, which I don't know if I've ever seen before.
Paulo said that's never happened to him before we can
go into that, But the bottom line is Boston was
zero for six in the first half and missed five
threes the entire second half, thirteen for eighteen in the
second half. They're that good. They're a championship team for
(06:17):
a reason. I still think they're probably my pick coming
out of the Eastern Conference, and we'll talk about that,
I'm sure, but I came away going Okay, we know
what the problem is, we know that we need to
address it, but we still have you know, we still
have the bones of a pretty good house to gold upon.
Here so excited about the future, disappointed about last night.
(06:38):
And sometimes these seasons go that way just because just
because them is the breaks, that's just the way it
kind of goes.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yep, that's right. And you know what in along those lines,
you have got guys on this roster that have to
do some serious soul searching. I mean some guys, there
are a handful of guys who just never got into
this series and it was frustrating. And I know that
they have to sit back and at themselves and figure
out what they want their careers to look like and
what they want next year to look like. And uh,
(07:05):
there's some frustration I think for a lot of these
guys who just could never some of them just could
never get going. And uh, you know that that kills
you in a series like this where you literally need
everybody playing at their best to have a chance to
push this series, you know, six seven games, and we
just didn't get that. So with that, there are a
number of things that have to be addressed. This summer
(07:25):
and we'll see how that what that looks like. And
and there are some big dates that are coming with
the draft and free agency and uh summer League and
all that, and now it's time to get to work
for the front office. But for now, it's uh, you know,
you you look at you look at this season that
that could have been if you were able to survive
those injuries. There just were so many, one after the next,
and through that all you're you're still you got a
(07:49):
two point game in Boston on the road, and you're
a star player. Polo Bancaero just he had a rough
first half. He's unable to get it going, but he's
searching and you know how good he is, and you
know he's going to find it at some point during
the game, and he's starting to get going. And then
three files, three foules in a minute. I've not seen
that before. Have you seen that before? And he said,
(08:10):
he said, it's never happened to him before. And he's
talking about the NBA college anything, and Jake. Two of
those calls were absolute horse, you know what I mean,
absolute garbage. And now the problem is the official that
made the call was yelled at and then that's the
same official that's going to make the review. So when
(08:31):
you get grandstanded and embarrassed in front of everybody, you're
not going to change your call. So to me, that's
what happened. But and I don't I'm not looking for
an offensive foul on Jalen Brown because when you got
two hands on the ball and you're making the move,
making your move, you're entitled to do what you want
with the basketball. Yes, he caught him in the elbow,
Yes he caught him in the face, but the file
(08:51):
never should have been called, and he explained it. I
know I have four files. I'm trying to get out
of the way. And then to call that file in
that moment was horrendous. It was absolutely embarrassing and horrendous.
And that did change this That that changed the tide
of the whole entire game. Now, him staying in, are
the Magic gonna win? Are they going to keep Austin
(09:12):
from making thirteen out of eighteen threes in the second half?
Who knows, But I'll tell you this, it would have
been a hell of a lot closer.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, I've seen I've seen the team with and without
Powell Van Carroll where.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yes, yes, yes, I think he went against the Boston
Celtics that that certainly would have been a would have
been a welcome sign. Now again, you can look at
everything you can look at. There are questions for coach
Moseley about the timeouts, right, and that you know, you
could burn all your timeouts and keep it within six
and then they're still going to have that barrage and
now you got nothing. I mean, you're you're darned if
(09:47):
you do and you're darned if you don't. So there's
so many ways you could look at it. But you know,
you got to have a little bit of grace and
in that situation, I mean you have to in the playoffs,
you have to call it if it's a foul. If
it's not, you can't. You have to let it go.
There has to be some allowance for physical play in
the postseason. It's it's amazing.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
It was interesting to me because I really expected things
to completely boil over last night with the way the
physicality has been building, the flagrants, the talk, and it
felt like both teams almost had like a gentleman's agreement
last night, like we're gonna play really hard, but but
but we're gonna keep it to basketball, whereas other series
are just go flying completely off the handle. Yes, you've
(10:31):
got you've got players. Dad's getting yelled at the game elsewhere,
and and it seemed like, and I had a feeling
that was gonna come at some point, but I also
thought that that that it was gonna get scrappy at
some point. It felt like the official in the second
half said, Okay, I'm taking control of this game. But
it felt like you only did it at one end,
(10:52):
right like, all of a sudden, every single Dickie tag
foul was being called on us and I and I
understood why you might want to do that. It's the
second half of a go home game, and it's been
a very very physical series, and sometimes that happens. And
I understand kind of the human nature of being an
official and saying I got it, we got to take
(11:12):
control of this thing. But the timing was goofy, and
it absolutely impacted the game. I don't know if if
Paula Bancarrol has four files, if you just overlooked the
fifth foul right like that.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Doesn't or make sure you have to make absolute sure
that it's a foul and it's an egregious foul because that,
let me tell you something, that's what they would have
done for Tatum and Brown. I think Tatum and Brown
down make a pick up their fifth file at home
and listen. I it absolutely sucks for this to be
a theme after everything that they've done this year, but
(11:47):
that was the theme of that game last night, and
calling that those three files in that moment were absolute killers,
absolute killers. And yeah, I think if you look back
at you completely hamstrung. So if there's any chance to
stem there, to stop that Celtics running to get back
into the game, we can't. We have no shout out
because we lost our best player.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
It was two minutes and fifteen seconds right into into
the second half he picked up three personal fouls. I mean,
that's just you've never seen that before, and if you have,
it's certainly not of a player of Paulo Bancaro's caliber.
And and then I think, what the I think the
real what sort of took it overboard was the five
(12:26):
second review? Right, you're right he got yelled at, But
but you have to have because now all of a sudden,
if you're if the official is reacting to being grand
standard too, then he's inserting himself and his personality into
his pride in all of that into and that's not
what's supposed to happen. And so at the very least,
(12:46):
if you, if you take a genuine look at it,
if you calmly explain to it. But that didn't seem
like it was what happened. And so and so, okay,
you're gonna you're gonna turn down the challenge, You're gonna
you're gonna uphold the foul call. Well, we'll have some
great with it, because what ended up happening was he
just pissed everybody else off even more. It was and
now we're playing on tilt. Now you've got a team,
(13:08):
you know, you got a team of dogs being chained
back and trying to figure out what's going on. And there,
you know, I think emotionally that was probably difficult for
everybody to handle.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
You have to in that moment, say, have to have
the wherewithal to realize I I called a fifth foul
on their best player, right, so now I have to
every official exhaust every single angle to try to make
sure that they got it right. When they do those reviews,
they're painful. You sit there and in that moment, In
that moment, the decision was made.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
I just need we had barely gotten a commercial break.
D I mean the head set off.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
You have to you have to in that moment say
all right, I just called a fifth foul on their star.
I have to make sure. I have to check every
single angle to make exactly sure that I saw what
I saw right and it's and that didn't happen. But again,
Polo plays doesn't pick up his fifth file. He plays
the entire second half. I still don't know if that's
(14:06):
enough to stop Boston from doing what they did, because
they made they made three after three after three. That's
just the kind of team that they are. And unfortunately,
the Magic offense was just tough to watch in this postseason,
and you didn't have enough to overcome Boston. But hey,
you got some. You now have a little bit of downtime.
You'll continue working on your game and big decisions to
(14:27):
wait for this Orlando Magic team and still through it all.
Those games three and four were absolutely electric at Kia Center,
and we want you to join us all next year.
You can get season tickets at Rolantamagic dot com Orlando

Speaker 4 (14:54):
Hey, welcome back to every one of his Magic Insiders,
presented by International Diamonds tender Dante Marcitelli and Jake been
here with you for the final segment of Magic Insiders
this year and again we want you in the building
all next year. You can go to orlandomagic dot com
Slash season tickets orlandomagic dot com Slash Season tickets. We
would love to have you in the building because this
(15:15):
team is on the come up. They're gonna make the
requisite moves this summer and we're gonna be or We're
gonna be a lot to contend with here as we
start getting guys healthy, make a tweak or two, and
then who knows what this team looks like last next year.
Let's get you our call the game. It's brought to
you by Glip from Rings Central Wethink the way you
work with secure meetings and messaging on any device with
clip by ring Central visit clip dot com to laurenmore Jake,
(15:37):
and I think because of the nature of how how
hard the Orlando Magic fought and what they did, it's
a copycat league. My call of the game is, we
have a blueprint. To me, in my opinion, we have
a blueprint on how you're supposed to play and potentially,
if anybody's gonna do it, beat the Boston Celtics and
keep them from getting back to the NBA Finals. Now,
we just didn't have the firepower. We played unbelievable defense.
(15:58):
We kept the team that averages a hundred and eighteen
points a game somewhere in the somewhere in the low
one hundreds, especially one o three a game before Game five.
There is a blueprint there. Couple that with any kind
of shot making, and you have a shot. You have
a shot against the Boston Celtics in a series. And
I think that I think the NBA needs to thank
Lando for what they did, how hard they fought, and
(16:21):
now everybody knows you can get under their skin pretty
easily if you show them a little physicality. I agree.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
I also read a guy, Matt Moore, who I respect,
used to write for CBS, and I think he works
for Action Network now. He tweeted last night, the Celtics
won't see another defense like that unless they make the
finals and play Oklahoma City. And so I agree one
hundred percent that you look running them off the three
point line, limiting those attempts and and sort of working
(16:51):
off of that is the is the book that you
need to stick to. But who's got the size and
who's got the versatility defensively and who can actually put
that game plan into practice. That's something that is very
special about the roster that we've assembled, and with coach
Mosley at the helm, So it's gonna be interesting. Brandon
asked me yesterday in the pregame show if the struggles,
(17:13):
or at least the fight that the Magic have put up,
has made me think any less about Boston's championship chances
this year, and I said, I don't think so. I said,
I think we have defended that well. I think I
think we're one of the best two or three defenses
in the league, and the numbers certainly would bear that out.
I think, Look, I think Cleveland knows what they need
to do. I think Detroit or New York knows what
(17:33):
they need to do. I'm just not sure they can
do it against that team. And then you think about
the fact that Drew Holliday did't play the last three
games of the series and the difference he could make
if he know. I'm not saying Boston is an automatic
back to back champion. But the other thing is this,
anytime I think about how hard it is to win
back to back titles in this league, I always think
about how two years of basketball playing into June right,
(17:56):
it is a lot of high level basketball.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
If you do two.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Concentecutive finals runs. They had the easiest finals run last year.
Nobody gave them right and so I still think in
the grand scheme of things, they're relatively fresh. It'll be interesting.
We want to make you feel better. If they steam
roll their way to a second finals, I'm not rooting
for that. I'm still very bitter and sour but the roster.
But but you know, if they cruise through the Eastern
(18:22):
Conference and they're able to knock the Calves around in
the conference finals, which I expect, I expect it to
be the Calves. I don't know if they'll knock them around,
but if they if they get to the finals relatively easily.
You'll sit there and say, well, the bottom line is
we ga. We get him something to think about anyways
in round one and I'm not sure anybody else is
going to be able to do that. Defensively.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Well, Joe Mizzula needs to thank the Earlana magic because
we got Jason Tatum going. I don't know when that
would have happened. It would have happened at some point,
might have been the next round against New York, but
we woke that guy up. Yeah. Now he is now
the second leading scorer in the postseason with his performance,
but we got him going. And Joe Miszula should be
excited because we got that team where they need to
(19:00):
be and we rough them up and I think they're
a little bit further ahead from a physicality standpoint from
what they've seen than the other teams that are playing
right now. And the last thing I'll end on this,
Jake is man, this was a blast. You know, we've
got two stars. We've addressed that, right, We've addressed that.
Pollow and Franz are your stars, your future. You're gonna
get Jalen and Mo back, and you've got decisions to
(19:22):
make on roster and all that stuff. But you have
got two guys that can be what we saw last night.
You've got two guys that can be Tatum and Brown.
You've got that, and now you've got to Now you
just got to. And you're so young, you're twenty two
and twenty four, and now you just got to add
to it and continue to grow. So we'll look forward
to seeing what they do this summer. But getting to
do this show, Jake yet for another year, and getting
(19:42):
to hangout and watch you calling games on the radio broadcast,
and then getting to go live right talking to you
magic fans and getting to do live shows was a
nice wrinkle that we could add this year and all
the things that we try, at least on this end
to bring to magic fans. You know, we're proud of
the job that it's all. It's a lot, and it
comes out strictly from a fire hose once once we
(20:03):
get to October. Uh. But you kind of come up
for air here at the end of April and you think, man,
that was a fun ride. Didn't It didn't end the
way we wanted it to end, But man, that was
a fun ride. And and I always enjoy us getting
getting to come on here and yack it out, yack
it up together.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
First first season at a new time, the three o'clock
first season really for Magic Insiders.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
UH.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Kind of a rebranding of our daily show, but made
some changes this year. D I had such a good
time this season. A special thanks and shout. I did
another broadcast last night, but to Brandon Kravitz, Tyler Karen
ben Specker, our crew, and of course to you, to
Tye East, them, Joel Glass. It was it was a
pretty special season for for me. In my third year
(20:47):
doing play by play, I feel like I'm getting better
and better and I'm just having a blast doing UH.
And it helps when the team is exciting and the
team is young, and the future seems bright and it
doesn't feel like in March and eight you're just waiting
for this day. You'd know and you can and you
can circle it on the calend. Okay, the regular season
ends here, and we'll do our last show here.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
When you're a.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Playoff team, and when he says to not know the
exact day right, and when you have the hope of
something special happening, that's what that's what all of this
is about. So it's been a fun season. It'll be
a very interesting off season, to be sure. And the
one thing that I know is that you and I
will be back right here in October doing this thing again,
talking about a new Magic season, season thirty seven of
(21:29):
Orlando Magic Basketball. And right now I could use a
couple of weeks off. About two weeks from now, I
wan'll be like, Okay, when are we back at it?
I'm ready to go. I'll be chopping at the bit again.
And I got of what going on this summer too.
I'm getting married. There is a whole lot to fill
my time before next season starts, but I already I'm
already thinking about it.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
I can't wait. Big summer for the Chapmans. Big summer
for the Chapmans. Well, that's awesome. I'm excited to follow
the progress throughout the summer. And again, this was kind
of a different year for the folks on iHeart as well.
So we appreciate the hope, all the help that we
got and all the support. Rick Everett, Ken Holiday, Jack Bradshaw.
There were so many people that contributed and help us
get through the season. Mike Bianki every Tuesday morning with
(22:09):
the Magic word of an atsa blast getting to do that,
and Brandon Kravitz and Tyler Karen were terrific. They were
just such great, great additions to the broadcast. Then, Ben Spector,
is that guy is not a graduate associate. I mean
that guy is a That guy deserves to have a
job in this industry and hopefully, hopefully is coming very soon.
That'll do it, And again, thank you to all of
(22:31):
you Orlando Magic fans. Hang in there. Big things coming
on the horizon, and we can't wait to get back
here in October and talk to you for season thirty seven.
As Jake said, for the final time. That'll do it
for Magic insiders. Have a great summer, everybody, and we'll
talk to you next year.
