Speaker 5 (00:50):
And welcome ever win the Magic Insiders. We are presented
by International Diamond Center of Donte market Lly J.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Catman along for the.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
Riot as well the Magic What Courney. They don't have
to be pretty at the end of the year, Brian
Hill always says, all they remember is the wins or
losses and the magic win. Last night in Charlotte ninety
five to eighty four. If you stayed up for the entirety.
You're pretty amazed at what happened in that fourth quarter.
The Magic outscore Charlotte thirty seven to twenty two. If
(01:16):
you went to bed early, you probably thought, well, just
out there night, just out there night. Can't seem to
get anything going offensively, And sometimes it happens like that
in the NBA. But wow, what a finish. Thirty seven
for thirty seven to twenty two. They outscore him. After
a sixteen to sixteen third quarter, the Magic are able
to pull it out and only shooting thirty nine percent
from the floor, they go twelve for forty six from
(01:39):
beyond the arc, they get out rebounded, they go at
the free throw line, tough night as what night of
seventeen at the free throw line and twelve for forty
six from three. This is not the recipe for a
victory in Charlotte, but nonetheless, the Magic find a way
to pull it out there led by Franz Bagner, who
else twenty one points, seven assists, and for Charlotte, led
(02:00):
by LaMelo Ball with forty four. It's forty four of
their eighty four points. And I have thoughts on LaMelo Ball.
We'll get into all that but the Magic are now
twelve and Magic are now twelve and seven. They've won
three consecutive games. Trying to make it for tomorrow. We'll
have it for you one o four point five FM
tomorrow night, starting at six thirty one oh four point
(02:20):
five FM, the Magic and the Chicago Bulls and will
be carving a turkey on the telecast. So I'll have
it for you on FanDuel Sports Network. Always enjoy that. So, Jacob,
I want to get your we've not talked before the show.
I just want to get your honest feedback and your
honest thoughts on what happened last night? How would you
accurately describe last night's game? Brutal Dante the third quarter?
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Ben Specker was about to finish the broadcast during during
that third quarter, only Cole in offensive display Unlike anything
I've ever seen, and not in a good way. The
teams combined for eleven of forty seven shooting in that
third quarter, twenty three percent from the field. Charlotte was
all of eight from three, We were two of thirteen
(03:05):
from three, sixteen to sixteen. It was a dead heat.
And that's the best thing, you know, Like, look, good
teams win games like that, I felt like.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Exactly right. The Detroit game on Saturday night was kind
of similar.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Okay, yeah, we scored one hundred and eleven points or whatever,
and we made some shots, and it wasn't quite that desperate,
I guess, just to knock down a shot, but you know,
they haven't met a whole bunch of rhythm or flow.
Getting kind of frustrated with the officials just not you know,
there's not a lot of highlights. I don't know how
many dunks I were last night, but it was less
than three. So it was just, you know, you just
(03:39):
kind of just kind of sailing along and then all
you needed was that stretch.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
What a nine to zero run. You hit a couple
threes in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
And that was enough because as bad as you shot
the basketball and you just detailed it was as bet
it was worse the way they protected the basketball. The
shot goodness, NBA season high twenty seven turnovers. I mean,
they just handed you the beat basketball game. And again,
good teams, when the game's being handed to you, you
take it and it might take it to the fourth quarter.
Better late than never. Cole Anthony was huge. We'll talk
(04:10):
about him the bench was you know, they saved a
buck fifty three bench points like that. That's a ball
game right there. And and Franz, you know, they very
clearly had a game plan for him. And we're going
to see that more sag off shooters. Let them shoot
wide open threes. We're not like Franz Wagner beat us
in the pay.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
That is the amazing thing. Like this is an NBA team,
that was an NBA team that nobody paid any attention
to the three point shooters.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yeah. None.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
I've never seen anything like that where it was just
every single member of this Magic team, aside from Franz Vagner,
was just dared to shoot, I mean literally left wide open.
And the Magic went into last night's game twenty ninth
in the NBA in three point percentage wide open. When
they are wide open, left uncontent. That's all you do
(04:56):
is work all game to try to get a wide
open look.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
And they are.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Twenty ninth in three point percentage when the closest defender
is six feet away. So that is an issue, but
it's been an issue. This is not a good shooting
team and it has not been a good shooting team.
They have their flash, doesn't they have nights where or
they get it going, certainly, but they don't walk into
every game as a great three point shooting team. That's
just not their strength. What they are is an unbelievable
(05:20):
defensive team. And twenty seven turnovers for thirty three points
off turnovers, you get twelve steals, you get a level,
you get six blocks last night. You are relentless on
the defensive end, and that, to me is why you
won that basketball game. You can stay in any game,
even as abysmal as the offense was last night. You
can stay in any game because of how hard you
(05:41):
compete on the defensive end. There is no letup, is yes,
And now listen, Charlotte. There is not a team on
any level of basketball anywhere in the world that cares
less about the basketball than Charlotte. I've never seen it.
I've never seen any like throwing it into the stands.
I mean maybe, and I know they were off too,
but you had to take advantage of it, and a
(06:02):
lot of those were forced. They were picking pockets. Yes,
there were some bad passes, but Orlando's defense played a
part in that. So, on one hand, on a night
where you clearly don't have it when you're five for
thirty from beyond the arc, I wouldn't even take the
thirty first three, like I think, Okay, we just don't
have it tonight. Let's go to the basket. They don't
have a room protector. Let's just score in the paint, right,
(06:23):
that would have been my mantra. You don't you fire
up forty six of them instead, and you hit twelve
of them, so roof and the port you ended up
catching a little bit of fire there in that fourth quarter.
You didn't abandon it when I thought you should, just didn't.
And there's no shame in that. You're gonna have nights
where you just don't have it, and they just didn't
have it on the offensive end. But the fact that
(06:44):
all of that was going wrong, right, We had a
former employee with us that you say, Rome is burning, right,
everything's burning all around you, and you still find a
way to dig it out. And that's a credit to
the culture that you have here, the defense that you have.
And if you ever needed a night for Cole Anthony
to sort of figure things out, last night was the
(07:06):
night right.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
One hundred percent. He was.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
He saved butt last night. He played twenty seven minutes.
Gary goes down after seven minutes with a hamstring. You
saw the frustration on his face. It didn't look good.
We know Gary's been struggling with that for years now,
and so we'll see what happens there. Jalen's already out,
so you knew, Okay, Cole's gonna get a shot. Jet's
gonna get a shot. But this is what we've been
(07:29):
saying the whole time with Cole Anthony is there's a
few things that he does that we really really need,
and that is shoot with rhythm, make two, three shots
in a row. Cole's really good and this is something
that he's grown into at recognizing who's hot, whether it's
him or somebody else, and trying to get them going.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
And you know, Mo was Mo last night.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Ji was an absolute beast of a defensive end, as
he always is, but you nobody was making shots. It
was You were six of thirty four heading into the
fourth quarter from three. So that's what you just said, right,
five of thirty six of thirty four. You probably hesitate
to keep shooting. And we've talked about.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
How cold there wasn't anyone within the closest defender to
Tristan de Silva was in South Carolina. Well, I mean
it's and it's you went one of eight from beyond
the arc. I mean, it just was an off night
for everybody, and.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
That was how the body was started.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
But that's gonna mess with you, right, that's gotta mess
with you when you're not feeling it and nobody has
any interest in guarding you. And that's not just it,
that's just one example. That was the whole team.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
No, jay I was three of ten, but then he
hit what two big ones in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
No, for sure, Franz was two of six. I mean
everybody ab they were daring to shoot as well. He
was two of nine.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Absolutely, it was across the board. But like I think
it's you know, it's almost poetic justice. Like when you're
having a game like that and the whole team is
lacking confidence, who better to pull you out than the
guy who's been who's been dealing with that for the last.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Right, Hopefully, knock on what he's already come out on
the other side. And I do think long term Coal
is gonna be better for the struggles he's had over
the last what calendar year, or so, and that was
a big step in the right direction.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Because what we always forget about Cole.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
And maybe we forget about it you and I don't,
is that not only can he knock down shots, he
was six and twelve, he was two of four, He's
had four assists.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
He did a good job there. He's getting better defensively,
and he is a great rebounder.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
D We're getting our butt catch down the bulls right
now the last week or so, and I'm sure something.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Coach Mosley's a little alarmed about.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
And I think part of it last night was the
Hornets were they had four guys next to the rim
all night long, right, they just packed the pain and
so they were just snatching those long rebounds off of
those misses from free for us like they're just weren't
We weren't getting those long rebounds and fifty to fifty
balls because they were there, they were closer to the
rim the whole time.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Cole grab's eight rebounds last night, eight of your thirty
nine rebounds. I mean, it was huge, it was huge.
It was shute.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
And I love that you pointed that out because that's
an effort thing and when you are not when you're
not clicking on a cylinders and your SHOT's not falling,
it is easy to forget about the other things. Right,
you get concentrated under shot, which is why I give
them credit because as abysmal as things were offensively, you
still walked in defensively. You made it literally hell for
Charlotte last night to do it. You held an nbaighteen
(10:16):
to eighty four points. I mean, that is a horrendous
night offensively, right, So that's what you did to them.
Charlotte shoots forty one percent, they go seven to thirty
two from three, and you forced twenty seven turnovers in
NBA high. I didn't know that till you just said that.
Then thirty three points off those off those twenty seven turnovers.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
But you don't.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
But it did affect you on the glass, and I
think that's an effort area. Going into the fourth quarter,
LaMelo Ball by himself had more rebounds than your starting
five and that's not good. Now, LaMelo Ball, give him credit.
He ended up finishing with what nine rebounds they're on
the night, seven assists and forty four points, but still
he out rebounded your entire starting five. And still what
(10:55):
it was all said and done your entire starting five
only out rebounded him by three. So it just was
not a good night on the glass. It was not
a good night for a lot of areas. But you
found nobody remembers that. You remember the wins and the losses.
Rebounding has been a problem. That's an effort thing that
can be corrected. But for all of Cole's issues offensively turnovers,
(11:15):
whatever it may be, limited playing time, he does that.
He gives you effort, He hits the boards, he gets
you a steal or two. He finds a way to
have an impact, and last night was huge. We don't
know where this is going to go. We don't know
if this means now he's a mainstay in the rotation again,
we don't know if he's back. We don't everything is
stored it out. We know he's struggling, and he's the
first one to say, I'm struggling mightily right now, and
(11:36):
I got to figure this out. He had seventeen points
in the previous seven games combined. He had sixteen last night.
But all I do know, regardless of what happens with
Cole tomorrow night against Cleveland or Chicago or wherever we go,
We need Coal for this team to get where they
want to get. Hole needs to be in the mix
come March April. Right, he's got time to figure it out.
(12:00):
But if this is the first game of him being
back and we're good and he's the old Coal from
here on out, great. If it's not and he and
he's he's coming along soon, a couple of needs, a
couple of weeks, another month, whatever it is, figure it out.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
We need Cole.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
Don't kid ourselves. We need Cole his offense, his energy,
his rebounding, everything that he brings. Come Marcher April.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
I like that he had four personal fouls last night too.
I mean, it's it's it at all. It's kind of goofy,
But you know, if you're gonna be playing limited minutes
and with Cole, look, you always talk about.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
The defensive end, and like, what are you seeing on
that end. He's obviously not the biggest guard in the world.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
He's got to overcome some things, but he's he's gotten
better on that end. You see at the very least
when he's in the game, he is working on that end.
And really what he needs to be as long as
he's out there is not the week the weak link
in the five on the four defensively, just don't let them,
you know, match up, hunt and get you in picking
rolls and and just go back to that time and
(12:55):
time again. So it was huge and got did you realize?
I mean, you want to be a game scoring ninety
five points last night? You know what the NBA low
for total points in a win is this year?
Speaker 5 (13:07):
What's that?
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Nice? Or due? Did that? That's right? That's right.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
They had a win earlier this year ninety four to
ninety That's exactly right. Yep, Oh, that's funny. That's well,
there you go. That just shows what they're doing. You
can win defensively. I think a lot of the I
think a lot of the stuff is catching up with them, right.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
You don't.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
You haven't had power for three weeks going on four.
You didn't have Jalen Suggs last night, didn't have him
for a game and a half. He's such a he's
such a defensive wrecker for opposing teams. You didn't have
Kntavious Caldwell Pope in LA. You lose Gary Harris seven
minutes into that game last night. I think it all
caught up with you, and I think it's like, okay,
how much more of this can happen. Hopefully you start
getting some good news. Maybe even tomorrow, we'll see guys
(13:48):
are questionable. Hopefully you can start getting somebody to return
to the lineup. Eventually you need everyone healthy. You're doing
an unbelievable job holding the fourth down, but eventually you
got to start getting some guys back. It's happening to
the whole league, So you know, gonna feel sorry for yourself,
but eventually you got to start working guys in there.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Just a little perspective real quick. Before the break, we
were three and two when Paula went down. We're twelve
and seven.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
Amazing, amazing, and that's with them. That's that's also wedging
of five beam losing streak.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
In there right exactly exactly, and so and so we
we've we've been talking about treading water. We're doing better
than treading water, yes, and we're in a really, really
good spot. But you're right, like holding the fork down.
I think it's it's gonna start to turn. You're gonna
start to get some guys back, and then look out
when you do, because if you can keep this, knowing
if you can keep this defense, Yes, and then add an.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
All NBA caliber scorer to the mix. Then I think
you're gonna be feeling pretty good about yourself. We don't.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
You can't do this justice in thirty seconds, but your
thoughts on LaMelo ball, Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
I I'll be if I can't do it in thirty seconds,
I have come back to me until we come back.
Speaker 5 (14:54):

This is Cole Anthony and you're listening to Magic Insiders
with my guys Dante Marcatelli and Jake Kenton on the
whole of the Magic ninety six nine the game.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
Welcome back everyone to Magic Insiders, presented by International Diamond Center,
Dante MarkeTel, Jake Chapman. We had a Jake Chapman segment there,
so it abbreviated versions here and on the back end
of Magic Insiders, let's get you our call the game.
It's brought to you by Glip from Ring Central. Rethink the

(16:16):
And we've not again, we've not talked about this beforehand,
so I don't know where you stand on LaMelo Ball,
but we touched on it a little bit before the break.
But a call of the game is going to be
whatever direction you go with the LaMelo Ball situation. But
I think he's tantalizing Jake. I love that he's healthy,
he's so much fun to watch. But man, that that
(16:36):
guy had zero impact on winning yesterday. And I'm not
saying it's a bad example. We had forty four points.
He is clearly hunting points. He clearly wants to lead
the NBA in scoring. And that's fine. That's fine. He
can do that and listen. By all accounts, all this
guy cares about his basketball. He has no vices, he's
not out doing stupid things. This guy lives in the gym.
He works on those step backs. He hit a one
(16:58):
legged step back three right. This guy lives in the gym.
He lives for basketball. But it's not translating to wins
right now. And that's not his ball. They've got some
injuries and maybe they'll get on a role.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
It is his fault.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
Okay, go ahead, go ahead, take it away, Take it away.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
I have never seen a more talented, but bigger loser
basketball player. And when I say, and I know it
sounds really bad when I say that, way he plays
losing basketball is what I'm saying. Nothing he does is
within the framework of an offense. If I'm Brandon Miller.
I'm going I gotta get out here. I can't play
with this guy. He's going to sidetrack my career. He's
(17:36):
so talented, Dante, but it is it's almost painful to
watch the way is he like there, it's just him
on a half court hoop in the driveway, Jesse, he's
just playing pickup. He takes the worst shots and he
makes them.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
He makes them. Yep.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
See, do you realize he's taking over twenty four shots
a game In the last twenty years. Three other players
have taken twenty four shots game Harden, Kobe.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
Iverson, No, that's twenty years in the last twenty years.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
It's and granted there's more, it's not them, He's not
He's not them. And you know, I was sitting there
going back and for them, going Okay, can he be Harden?
And I'm like, no, heart like Hardon never won a championship,
but they were in the conference final.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Those Houston teams were very, very good. Harden is a
winning player. He just never won the big one.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Lamela's got a lot to change before he becomes a
winning player.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
And I'll just leave it at that.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
Yeah, And that's well, that's a good point, and I think,
you know, you look at the bench and it's easy
to say, Okay, you're decimated with injuries. You don't have
a ton of depth right now. Right you got guys
like Cody Martin, Moussa Deobotic, guys that play hard but
just not known as as premier scores coming off the bench. Well,
part of your job is to kind of get them
going to And now he did have seven assists and
did have nine rebounds, so he does a lot of things.
(18:50):
And last night he took thirty shots. He actually was efficient.
He hit seventeen of them. He's got a great runner.
It's it's hard for him to miss it. You know,
he very seldom misses in the but you're watching it,
you just know the eye test is like, Okay, don't
know how much the teammates love this, and it doesn't
doesn't seem to He could have taken over that basketball
game with this poorly as Orlando shot the basketball, but
(19:12):
he would come right down and turn it over too.
And I thought, yes, there's a lot to figure out there.
But the first step is he's healthy, and who knows
where this goes from here. But the magic, most importantly
they get a win now three consecutive wins, trying to
make it for there eight no at Kia Center. They'd
love to go nine to zero if they can grab
a victory tomorrow against old friend Nick Vucevich, Zach Lavine
and the and the Chicago Bulls here tomorrow. But Jake
(19:37):
the Magic have to figure out some things offensively. They
have to start getting some guys back. Hopefully you get
some good news. Maybe you can get Jalen or Wendell
or both back. Hopefully Gary's injury is not long term.
But we you know, would be we mention Cole Anthony.
He would be remiss if we didn't mention Fronz Bogner.
He continues to carry this thing. They get thirteen points
in the fourth quarter. He had a couple of big
(19:57):
step back threes like he did in La He was huge.
But again I thought, another guy that come to the
rescue is Mo Wogner. And you know you got me
all home. We got me all fired up yesterday with
this ESPN and I tweeted about it today. He's not
in the top eight for ESPN for their predictions for
six Man of the Year yet as of today, right
now before the games that happened tonight. He's tied for
(20:19):
second in total points off the bench. He's tied with
Buddy Heels, right, who a lot of people think of
the runaway winner for six Man of the Year. Right,
He's tied with him in scoring, and Mobogner is twenty
fourth in minutes. He's twenty fourth in minutes. He leads
the NBA in free throws made and attempted off the bench,
and he's doing it in the minutes. He's making the
most of the minutes he's getting. Last night he gets
(20:41):
twenty six minutes because Goga Goga goes for twenty one,
so you give him a few extra minutes. Just give
me your thoughts on how much better Mo Bogner has
gotten and can be even by the end of this year.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Yeah, I mean, it's happened right before our eyes. He's
turned into a smarter, more efficient player. He controlled. The
big thing for me is that he controls his emotions right.
He's not committing dumb falls when he's out there. He's
not getting you know, frustrated at one end and then
cook down the other end.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
He knows, he knows what he brings and he gets
down to it.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Every night, and he is you know, he's are Lou
Williams or he usually don't six of six men like
that look like Mo Wagner.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
It's usually a guard in the balls in his hands.
What does coach Rosey say? He wakes up with ten points.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
And we have the total total points as far as
bench units go, we're third in the league. We scored
seven hundred and fifty bench points. Only Golden State and
Memphis are better.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
And so he is.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
He is the primary, you know, point man on one
of the best benches on a twelve and seven team
that's you know, third in the Eastern Conference. So at
the very least he needs to be in the conversation.
You got Peyton Pritchard. I think is is probably the
odds on favored right now.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
With Hayden Pritcher and Buddy Heel. There's some other guys
in there, correct, Yes, and.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
Those and those guys fit with your six man of
the year classically looks like But if nas Reed is
gonna get six man, is gonna win six Man of
the Year, then I think we got to get Movogner's
name in the mix at the very least.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
But Jake, I'm talking but Peyton Pritchard, and this is
the thing. Peyton Prichard has four hundred and ninety one
minutes in eighteen games. He's played the same amount of
games as as Mo Wagner, and he's played one hundred
and sixty more minutes. He's played one hundred and sixty
more minutes, and he's scored sixty more points. And that's
a guy that he's only the threes, right, and that's
what Boston's doing volume shooting, right and all that. So
(22:31):
and listen, Peyton Pritchard is having a heck of a year.
That's not to detract, but this guy is going This
guy's not playing six man off the bench minutes. This
guy's getting starter minutes. This guy's getting Mo Wagner is
getting six man off the bench minutes and is getting
off the charts production with it. Right, So I think,
but you're right, the Boston Celtics have the best record there,
(22:52):
probably will have the best record when it's all said
and done. But what he's doing in the time that
he's given is remarkable. And the best part he doesn't
care about any of that. He just wants to go
out there and play and win. But anyway, hopefully there's
some hardware coming for him. I think he needs to
be in the conversation. You're right, and hopefully there's an
announcement on Franz Wagner sometime in the next month or so,
because that guy should be the tenth All Star in
(23:12):
Atlanto magic history with the year that he's having, and
I don't think there's any question about it, and hopefully
they get that right for sure. That's going to do it.
