And welcome every one of those Magic Insiders presented by
International Diamond Center. Nante Marcitelli, Jake Chapman, you're with you
on this Monday evening.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
We hope everyone had.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
A wonderful, wonderful Easter weekend. And they're letting. Magic played
game one of their seven game series best of seven
against the Boston Celtics and they fall one o three
to eighty six. A terrific start, You're up by one
at halftime, feeling good. You were down by as many
as nineteen. Then this basketball game, you were down double
digits in the first half alone, and you find a
(01:18):
way to take a one point lead into the break.
You actually were up by three. A silly foul which
has got to be eliminated, gave two more free throws
to Derek White, so it could have been a three
point lead, and then just some too many costly mistakes
in that third quarter. You get out scored by Boston
thirty to eighteen in that third quarter, and you were
unable to climb out of that. But still you lose
(01:38):
by seventeen one o three to eighty six. But it
never felt, never felt like you weren't within striking distance,
if that makes sense. As we bring in Jake Chapman,
this magic team felt the entire game like they were
right there if they could get one more run in
that second half. Unfortunately, a second half run was not
meant to be too much. Peyton Pritchard with nineteen too much,
Derek White with thirty despite thirty six points from Polo
(02:02):
ban Caro eleven rebounds, twenty three points from Franz Wagner,
you get thirteen rebounds from Wendell Carter Junior. But all
of that being said, before we get into the game
and break it all down, there is a feeling. They
said it on the national broadcast last night. I know
you said it, and you have felt this way the
entire year on the radio broadcast right here on ninety
six to nine in the game, Polo Bancaro has arrived.
(02:23):
Polo ban Cao we felt arrived last year. We could
see it in those games five, six, and seven, especially
thirty eight points in Game seven. But Polo is here,
Franz is right behind him. The rest of the team's
got to chip into and help them out. But it's
hard because they Franz and Polo take fifty one of
your eighty one field goal attempts.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
So that's the rub.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
That's the stuff you got to figure out, and all
the great ones do here in the postseason. That's what
this is all about. But regardless of what happened yesterday, Jake,
do you not agree that Polo ban Caero is here.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
One of the things we keep forgetting about or mentioning.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
And I stumbled over it as I was prepping. Is
his last three games now on the road in the playoffs.
You're talking about thirty six yesterday, thirty eight. We remember
from game seven. How about Game five, the one to
four to one OZHO three loss in Cleveland, which might
have really been this series. He had thirty nine in
that games. He's at thirty nine, thirty eight and thirty
(03:20):
six and his last three road playoff games, which of
course are you know three of his what five road
playoff games is an entire career fourteen to twenty seven.
Yesterday that that surge in the second quarter was largely
on his shoulders, and largely because he was knocking down threes.
They're leaving us alone if we're going if we're going
(03:40):
to take them, we got to make them, and he
was basically the only guy yesterday. We made ten threes,
and he had four of them in a handful. I
think three of them came in that second quarter. You know,
look is Boston team, and we'll talk about it.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
They are. They're so good and you have to have a.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Clean sheet, so to speak, against them, and there were
just a few things that you can clean up, obviously,
the turnovers and the fast break points. You played a
really good game yesterday. Polow needs a little bit of
help and and Bronz was ten of twenty four. He
missed five threes, there were nine. I will say there
were nine turnovers combined between Polo and Franz, So certainly
they played their role in that regard. But the Paul
(04:17):
is in their hands so much, and so guys need
to not only guys need to not only help out,
but they need to like do it themselves, you know
what I mean. He can't just be based off of
Polow and Franz created for you. And so we'll see.
I think there are certainly some things to like from yesterday.
You know, it's concerning that Boston wins a game by
seventeen where they got seventeen and sixteen points from Tatum
(04:41):
and Brown. But I think we deserve a little credit
for slow and down Tatum, and so there's there are
certainly some things to work with. It's going to be
a tough series. We knew it was going to be.
But if you can get something like that from Polan
and we're getting Grady now. I mean, every every time
politickes the floor for a playoff game, expected thirty plus,
which is crazy.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
You got a nice founda to work from.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Well, and you got thirty points from Derek White, which
was a killer. He got nineteen off the bench from
Peyton Pritchard. The Magic made ten threes. Derek White himself
made seven, and then he got another four from Peyton Pritchard.
So two Celtics alone outshot you from distance, you know,
and again that's been the story of the entire year.
The Magic make about ten or eleven threes. The Celtics
get up about forty eight threes a game. They got
(05:21):
thirty seven up yesterday and they make eighteen. They got sixteen,
So they did what they do right, They're gonna get up.
You limited their threes and they still almost hit their average.
They just were red hot from beyond the arc, especially
Derek White and Peyton Pritchard. A lot of miscommunication, a
lot of mistakes defensively that led to those guys getting
open looks, and Jake, I think the whole game came
(05:41):
down to in my opinion, Yes, you went through stretches
where you couldn't score, and you know, if guys get
the basketball to your point, a lot of them are
just in a hurry to give it right back to
poloer Frands like, guys have got to find a way.
Cole Anthony comes in. He's a secondary playmaker. He can
get in the paint. Didn't have a great shooting night,
but that's a guy that can maybe help you down there.
I also feel once this once this team gets the
(06:03):
crowd behind him, I think this is going to be
a completely different series in Orlando, which I think is
going to be incredibly electric. But I think there's a
lot of positives you can take from yesterday. That first
half was incredible. They play I don't know how many
times they mentioned, you know that they mentioned on the broadcast.
These guys are playing their tails off, right. I've never
seen a team work so hard, and I know that's
(06:23):
how you feel as well. So they were right there
that first These turnovers I think is going to be
the tail of the playoff series. You can't make mistakes.
The margin of error is so small. It is so small,
and it has been all year. But if you're going
to make a mistake against this team, live ball mistake,
they're going to come down and kill you. Fifteen turnovers
for twenty four points. Off turnovers, to me was the
(06:45):
difference in the ball game. You're sitting at the rim
where you have a chance to get a good shot
a layup, you turn it over long arm of por Zengis.
You're trying to throw a lob to Windell, he pokes
it away. Every single turnover ended up in a transition three.
I felt like yesterday for Boston and that's that's the killer.
And I think that's got to be the biggest lesson
that you're learning.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Game one and it felt like they weren't even just
live ball turnovers. A lot of them are like above
the break, so they only had to go like fifteen
feet to get correct correct.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
And we're also we're also the only team, I swear,
in NBA history that will three times a game just
dribble and either step out of bounds on our own
or just turn it over.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Yeah, just dribble it off our leg.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Like you can't have those in the playoffs. You got
to clean those up. And if I'm you know, and
if I'm if I'm ten feet from the basket and
I'm trying to force a pass to Jonathan Isaac who's
five feet from the basket, and you know, you got
to you got to think about all those things, and
I think that I think all of those turnovers will
be clearly evident on the film.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Let me, I'm gonna throw a quick little curveball, and
then it'll make sense.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
Why is Drew Holliday a Hall of Famer? Interesting?
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Interesting? He will he might be, he might be. I
would say no at this point. I would say no,
but I would have to take a closer look. But
you know, if he got in, I wouldn't be upset, right,
And I don't know. He's one of the best defensive guards,
if not the best defensive guard of all time, And
I don't know that his numbers will be enough to
warrant being in the Hall of Fame if.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
It's the best If you can say, is that one
of the best defensive guards of all time, we better
fight a spot for him in the springfield for crying out,
I think got all kinds of people in that Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Point is this he?
Speaker 2 (08:16):
And if you and I were you know, if we
had an NBA podcast, we could do a whole hour
on whether Drew Holliday is a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
We will not.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
It was a Hall of Famer yesterday that third quarter
Dante I mean, that was the swing of the game,
and the other guys were making shots, but he was
three for three from three point range in the third.
He scored nine points in the quarter, also had four
assists and two steals. And he's just so solid defensively.
There are just are very few players who are able
to do what he does. You think about how like
(08:42):
an Evan Mobley or going back in the day, like
Garnett and Duncan, how they could guard the post, but
then they could switch out onto the perimeter.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
He's vice versa. He is a perimeter guy, but he
guarded the post.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
And so even with the size disparity, you're fine with,
you know, they're fine with Paula going one on one
with him. Franz whoever, he can just guard at least
four positions on the floor, sometimes five, and then he's
as good as anybody a crawling into the ball and
disrupting things, plays passing lanes. He just does everything so
well defensively.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
He does he does. And how lazy is this? How
lazy is this? The writers have never had him higher
than six for Defensive Player of the Year. That's it's
never higher and six and he's and he's a two
time All Star.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
That's because it's because you just say the numbers, the
numbers exactly.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
You know, if if he doesn't have the dice and
Daniels eyepop and jump off the page steals and all
that stuff. But he you know, it's it's not coincidence
that he went to Boston they won a championship and
Milwaukee hadn't been able to get their defense right.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
True, and he was and he was the missing piece there.
He was the missing piece of Milwaukee as well.
Speaker 6 (09:42):
Exactly and exactly, and so I just think he's he's
he's so good, and they are so good, and they
have such a good identity defensively that you know they
can they can withstand a thirty three point night from
the Tatums and from Tatum and Brown combined Mike last
night and still cruise and you know the one oh three.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Well, we should be able to score one hundred points
in a playoff game or at least hover around rage.
And so our defense is our defense, and and yeah,
there are a few things you can clean up.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Bottom line is we were sloppy with.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
The basketball and we made it easy on them and
and it wasn't just right stretches.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
You know, it wasn't transition defense. They were running.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
They were getting three on ones and three on two's,
and they're so good at pulling up every single one
of those guys can stop on a dime and raise
up a three.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
And I don't know who on our team is capable
of doing that.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
We just know we're not. That's not our game. That's
not our game. We don't have that personnel. You have
to address that personnel this summer. But that's that's not
in the arsenal at this point. And that's that isn't
their arsenal. That is their whole them all going into
this year. Obviously it starts with Tatam and Brown, but
they are surrounded by shooters, yep. And you know, and
and and you can run guys off the line so much.
Peyton Pritchard was hitting.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
He killed was hitting. Oh he killed you.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
He got anywhere that he wanted to. And you're asking
a lot of these guys. But but I do think
we opened Boston's eye and that nothing's going to be easy.
You held the defending champs on ten days of rest
to one hundred and three points. Yeah, tw one hundred
and three points, forty five percent shooting. They're three point
shooting bailed him out. If they went thirteen for thirty seven, Right,
thirteen for thirty seven, that is a completely different basketball game.
(11:17):
Right if they don't, if they missed one or two
of those transition threes, it's a different basketball game. So
that has to be your MO going into the game. Uh,
coming into game two, there's no question about it. And
I think I think you can. I think you'll rally.
I think you'll find a way to check the film
and to and to keep it to keep it close.
I keep thinking about this Drew Holiday thing. Dennis Johnson,
is he liked? Would you consider him to be a
(11:38):
Dennis Johnson?
Speaker 4 (11:39):
I got Dennis Johnson.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Dennis Johnson's a Hall of Famer, and he got in
for his defense, and he got in for, you know,
for for being able to knock down an over win
three rings. He helps hed, he won four rally won
four rings. But four rings that doesn't hurt you. That
doesn't hurt you. Drew's got two.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
I'm just saying, like, I, Okay, we don't talk enough
about this guy and what he's able to do and
what he has to that team.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
As well.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, he certainly does. When we come back, we're going
to take a closer look at Pawo Bancaro, Franz Wagner
as well and see what adjustments need to be made
here in game two. And this is all we've talked
about all year, Jake, you you've got to have a
third guy. Your third guy was Jonathan Isaac with seven
not good enough. Love what Jonathan Isaac's doing. Defensively, we
don't need him to score. Wendell needs to be better,
(12:21):
KCP needs to be more of an impact. Gary Harris
has got to hit shots. Caleb Houston, Anthony Black. They
got that first game out out of the way, right.
I think it was big for those guys. They were
incredibly nervous in my opinion, with the way they play.
They got that game out of the way, right. So
can that be a much better game too coming into
Wednesday night?
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Well?
Speaker 3 (12:40):
All that, yeah, all that will tell I certainly hope, well,
because it needs to be if you're gonna stay competitive
at all in this series. More Magic Insiders coming your

The game is brought to you by Clip from rings Central.
Rethink the way you work with secure meetings and messaging
on any device with Clip by ring Central. Visit clip
dot com to learn more. Jake, this might call the
game if you're the Boston Celtics. I don't think you
(14:23):
have to do anything. Ever, You probably don't ever have
to adjust to anybody you play right that they're gonna
have to adjust to you. You're the defending champs for
a reason, and I think you're kind of easing in
Tatum and Brown after all this time off. I think
they would I think Tatum and Brown would love if
it was the other guys that carried us to carry
them in the first round. Right and was able to
beat the Ortlanta Magic. I don't think you're gonna have
(14:44):
that luxury. I think the Magic are going to tighten
things up and they're gonna make Tatum and Brown beat them.
And they are very capable of doing that, There's no
question about that. But I think I think we learned
our lesson and I think we're gonna make you. Can
you win that basketball game if you take care of
Derek White and Peyton Pritchard right, I think you have
a chance to win that bat But I don't think
Boston will adjust. I think they have a game plan.
They made their threes. They're going to go with that.
(15:05):
The Magic will adjust and I think they will, and
I think you're going to see different I think you're
going to see a change in the rotation. I think
you're going to see more minutes for Cole Anthony and
I personally, I think we might see a little more
Goga Maatase. That's just my guess what do you think?
Speaker 4 (15:18):
I don't. I don't dislike that at all.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Goga is interesting because the rim protection that he brings
doesn't help that much. This Boston team just doesn't attack
the basket. Everything They do is on the perimeter offensively
and and in transition if you fork the ball over
like we did fifteen times yesterday. But Goga sets good screens,
he cleans up offensive rebounds better than just about anybody.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
He brings the juice. We know defensively he'll be looking.
It does, Yes, it does regardless.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
So I think it's a you know, that would probably
equate to like a stalemate as far as Perzingis goes,
or certainly if you're talking about Luke Cornett off the bench.
I like the idea of Goga playing just just to
up the physicality a little bit. I keep thinking, Dante,
if we if we have a shot in this series,
we need to obviously be the much tougher and stronger
in most physical team, and we need to control the
glass and then includes the offensive glass.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
We need to make christophs Perzingis a part of this.
And if you think back.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
To the game in December at the Kia Center, we
were we were pre switching, and we were we were
basically mismatching Perzingis and sort of like luring them into
being a post up team to.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Dump it the ball into the post.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Because Trebling Queen or Anthony black is on is on
you know, seven to four Porzingis and he was two
for ten from the field.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
They went to the free throw.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
One fourteen times that night, but it just broke their rhythm.
We just have to disrupt their rhythm when they start
turning you over and getting out and going that's what
they want to do.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
Tom's away. It's just so demoralizing.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And you look up and they've gone on a twelve
to two run in two minutes, and it just happened.
They're the Warriors, They're the best version of the old
Splash Brothers Warriors, basically right, right and so and so.
Anything to disrupt that rhythm, I think is is good sometimes.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Look, it was a flagrount on KCP with a dangerous
play yesterday. I'm fine with hart Files though. If if
they want to attack the bucket, they're gonna pay for it.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
And we have to figure out ways to just break
up their their shooting rhythm. And so I think Goga
would be good in that regard. I think we've got
to get a whole lot more Cole Anthony. We need playmakers,
we need scores, but we need eight as well. I mean,
so guys have to be aggressive Fronds.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Right now, we.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Got here with everybody chipping in, everybody making shots here
down the stretch, and that's what needs to continue. And
I do think you got a lot of nerves out
of the way. I do think there were a lot
of guys that had those Game one nerves and a
lot of guys have never been through this. Anthony Black
has never played a playoff game meaningful minutes.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
And let me just say this about Abu, it's sink
or swim with him.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
We need him.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
There's no pulling Anthony Black out of the rotation right now.
He's played such a big role all regular season. Right
he played two playoff games meaningless minutes last year. Correct,
so he had a little deer in headlines for sure. Caleb,
I'm not sure if Caleb is is going to be
part of this part of the rotation right now. We
need him shooting, yes, but when you started thinking about
shooting shortening the rotation to like an eight man Caleb
(17:59):
and Gary, probably maybe you can only afford one of.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
Those guys to play big minutes in Game two. It'll
be interesting to watch.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Well, that's a good point the adjustment. Hey, the Boston
took Game one they're the defending champs. The Magic have
to adjust now, and to be curious, that's just a
guess that we have. But we'll see where Jamal Mosley
goes and what adjustments are made on this end. But
you've got a chance. It feels like you've got to.
You're definitely gonna make this a competitive series, and I
think you have an opportunity to get a couple of
games and make Boston and make Boston think twice here
(18:26):
and I will see it. But it starts with that
big game on Wednesday, and listen, it wasn't just making threes, Jake.
I think one thing that hurt too, man. They up
their physicality. Boston came out and completely changed their entire approach.
Their physicality roughed us up, made it hard around the rim.
I think that forced a lot of misses, and I
think that was something that we were not expecting. Caught
us off guard and led to that thirty to eighteen
(18:46):
third quarter and was unable. We were unable to turn
it around after that. But either way, first game is
over and done with. You held them to one hundred
and three points. You got to put some more points
on the board. Protect the basketball and somebody's got to
step up and help Pollow and Franz.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
Who will that be.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Who will be the third and ideally the fourth guy
that will do that against the Boston Celtics in Game two.
That'll do it for Magic Insiders again, or THENDO. Magic
dot Com is where you can get your playoff tickets
for Games three and four. Man, that's going to be
an unbelievable atmosphere coming up this Friday and Sunday in
our building, and of course we'll lando. Magic dot Com
is where you can get your season tickets for next year.
(19:22):
Buying season tickets now get you playoff tickets, So that's
one way you can get in the building as well.
That'll do it for Magic Insiders. Or back tomorrow three
o'clock right here, ninety six to nine in the game
