Whoo.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local
diamond experts since nineteen eighty one. And now here are
your hosts, Dante Marcitelli and Jake Chapman.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
And welcome everyone to Magic Insiders. We are presented by
International Diamond Center. Dante Marcitelli, Jake Chapman and Lento Magic
will battle Boston to stave off elimination. Game five comes
your way tonight eight o'clock right here, ninety six to
nine the game and eight o'clock on fan Duel Sports Network.
It's winner go home. I guess win or lose, you
(01:11):
go home for the Alanta for their Lanta Magic. But
the series is over and the season is over if
the Magic do not win here tonight. So that is
what is on the line. The Magic have to win
a road game. They didn't do it last year in Cleveland.
They have yet to do it this series against the
Boston Celtics. But you have to win to stave off elimination.
The series is three games to one and Boston wants
(01:32):
absolutely nothing to do Jake Chapman with getting on a
plane and going back to Orlando. They said as much.
Jalen Brown said after Game four, we don't want to
come back here, and you know they're gonna go all in.
Who's in, who's out, Who's gonna be critical for this
matchup here tonight. We'll update you on some of the finals.
Last night, big win for Jimmy Butler and the Golden
State Warriors. And as Jimmy Butler was taking a command
(01:56):
of the Houston Rockets three games to one, his former
team was suffering an embarrassing setback, one of the most
lopsided losses in NBA playoff history. So we'll have all
that for you. But Jake, give me a I'm gonna
give you my thought here in a second for being
around the guys and kind of give you a sense
of how things are feeling up here. But I want
you to tell me how you are feeling because we
get ready for this pivotal game five.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
I'm ready to go.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I'm I guess like I've been sort of throughout the series.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
I wouldn't say cautiously optimistic.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
I would just say I'm slightly optimistic, like I know
we have the formula to beat this team.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I know since Game one we've been right there.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
It's been a couple of plays, a couple areas that
you need to clean up in the two losses, and
then obviously the win on Friday night showed you exactly
what you need to do.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I think we.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Heard about as cut out as any team with our
style of play to be able to make this a
series and to be able to squeeze out a win tonight,
junk the game up, limit them to single digit threes,
and don't beat yourselves at the freey throw line, offensive
rebounds and turnovers. And I can say it really quickly,
it's really hard to do that against this Boston team.
(03:05):
But we'll see the moment will not be too big.
We know that, we know they'll fight their butts off
and and I think it will. It'll come down to
a few bounces of the ball, maybe a few fifty
to fifty balls in the fourth quarter and a few jumpers,
and whoever makes them late will we'll either advance to
the second round or there you go headed back to Orlando.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Indeed, if we.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Can, if we can get a game six out of
this thing, cow, then yeah, then it's a whole different
ball game now, all of a sudden, that pumps a
whole lot of belief back into that locker room. If
you go win this game tonight, and if you get
back in front of the Kia Center fans.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Well, and I told some of the guys I was
talking to him with some of the people down for breakfast,
I said, you know the old Kevin Malar line, right,
which ironically was up here in Boston when they were
down three nothing to the Yankees. Don't let us win tonight.
Don't let us win tonight, because then we got Pedro
going tomorrow shilling. Anything can happen in the game seven, right,
Don't let us win tonight. If you're the Boston Celtics,
that has to be the mantra, don't let us win tonight,
(04:00):
because then you go back to Orlando for a Game six,
and then anything can happen in a game seven. So
that's what you're up against. Thirteen times in NBA history
has a team come back from down three games to one.
Ninety five percent of the time. The team that is
up three games to one moves on somewhere about two
hundred and seventy five times that they've won thirteen losses.
(04:20):
Most recently twice. The Denver Nuggets did it in the
Bubble twice. That year they were down three games to one,
came back and won against the Jazz in the first
round and the Clippers in the second round. No, Contavious
Caldwell Pope was not a part of that Nuggets team,
but Gary Harris was, so he has some history. So
maybe that might be something that you might lean on
as he has some experience. Ironically, Tory Craig, who's a teammate,
(04:41):
is and he now plays for the Boston Celtics, so
he has that same history. We listen, all of that
doesn't matter. You have plenty of teams. Plenty of teams
have at least forced a Game six, and that's the
only goal right now. You cannot win the series tonight. Tonight,
you're just trying to stave off elimination, and by doing so,
it has to be one of those times where your
(05:02):
offense comes through. And I think you're gonna find you know,
Paula bankerro twelve for thirty two in Game four, he
may go twenty two for thirty two. I don't know
what that's going to look like for him tonight, but
I think it's going to be a statement game. I
don't think he's I don't think he's happy about how
Game four went, and I think before we look at
everybody else, I think it's going to start right there.
He's going to have one of the most brilliant performances
(05:23):
of his playoff career.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Is my guest here tonight, Yeah, And you know, ultimately
it comes down to, like, what what makes Paulo and
Fron so special and why we're so excited about the
future is those two guys are competitors first and foremost,
and and look this it's it's been a really special
two seasons with kind of this group and really special
year this year. It's been a whole lot of adversity
(05:46):
this year, but you know that that group is going
to fight tooth and nail to excend because this will
be the last. You know, it'll look different next year.
I don't know how many changes there will be, but
there will be changes. This will be this could be
the last that this last.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Game that this group ever plays together.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
And so I think, no matter what, you'll obviously get like, uh,
you know, uh, back against the wall type of swing
your way out of a type of effort from everybody.
But Paula Van Carol and Franz Wagner, throughout their young
careers have shown us nothing but they rise in these
moments and and and that they are as competitive as
(06:23):
anybody else in the NBA. And that's what you love
so much about them. Those guys are going to go
down swinging if they're going down.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
And that's what you hope. You just hope that you
can force a game six and it comes from the
right place. But it's got to come down to other
guys have got to contribute. And we've talked about this
the entire series. Whereas Boston got big contributions from al Horford.
They got it from Derek White, They've got it from
Peyton Pritchard, somebody has step Christopsporzingis in the last game,
and in addition to Tatum or Brown, one of those
(06:50):
guys typically going off and getting help from the others.
That's how you build a championship team. They have that
championship pedigree. They they've been through the fire, they're battle tested.
But that's what it's going to take. It's going to
take Polo and Frowns playing at another level, and it's
going to take multiple guys here contributing. So I look
at it, Jake, it's been a rough it's been a
rough stretch for Cole Anthony. Two minutes, two personal fouls,
(07:12):
two turnovers in game four. We have not been able
to get him going. Katavis calledwell, Pope, he was two
for four in the last game, but you just you're
unable to get him. Looks Jonathan Isaac only a few
shot attempts per game. Wendell Carter Junior has been very
good in second half of these games. How do we
get it to all come together? Is because Boston, to
their credit for all to talk about the offense, the
(07:33):
offense hasn't been there for them. They have struggled mightily
to score the basketball. They've not seen a defense. They
may not see a defense like this the rest of
the way if they're able to get out of this
first round series. But their defense has been what's to
me has what's been the difference for them in this series.
Pollow and Franz. They seem to be content letting them
get theirs. They have not left black KCP when they
(07:55):
are not letting those guys get going.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
No, they're not, and that's been the big wing of
the series.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Our defense has been has been good, and we've held
Boston under all of their regular season averages, but we
scored one hundred points in one of four games. I mean,
the three point shooting, unfortunately, has been about the same
or worse than it was during the regular season for US,
which was twenty ninth or thirtieth in the league, depending
on which day you.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Looked at it. And so so, you know, give Boston credit.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Their defensive game plan has been obviously solid.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
And d I don't I wish I knew the answer
to that. I think it has.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
To start inside out, and it has to start with
Polo and Franz being dominant, and then you have to
figure out a way for to finally make Boston say, okay,
we need to make an adjustment, like it has to
be so dominant like Paulo's got thirty at half right,
or Pollow and Franz are both ten of ten at
the free throw line and they just can't stop the
march to the stripe to where they start letting up
(08:54):
a little bit. Obviously, there's going to be open opportunities
for the kcps and the Gary on the world, but
I think there I think you just need to sort
of pour it on. If they're giving it to you,
you have to keep on executing and soften things up
a little bit, because I think we've shown through four
games now that we can't make kind of open shots.
(09:14):
We have to get wide open feet set squared up.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Threes in order to knock them down.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
And there's there's a just few and far between against
the team as good as Boston.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Let's start with this sixty nine percent from the free
throw line. Can we do better? There? Nine miss free
throws in Game two. I think that's seven series seven
miss that's the series sixty nine percent in the series
that's fifteenth out of sixteen teams. Right, So you missed
three free throws in game one, you missed nine in
game two and you lost by nine. You missed seven
in game three and you won that game. You missed
(09:45):
six in Game four and you lost by nine. Can
that get better? Can you not? Can tonight be the
night We'll start with that first. Can tonight be the
night you knock down free throws?
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:54):
I hope so, because we saw Paulo ban Carrol make
an adjustment at the All Star break and come back
post All Star looking like a different guy at the
free throw line, and that was a big reason why
those numbers jump from twenty four to twenty five a
night to twenty nine and thirty a night. He went
from a sixty eight percent free throw shooter around about
I don't have the numbers in front of me right now,
but pre All Star was he was down below sixty
(10:14):
nine to seventy percent, and and he got the percentage
up to seventy three seventy four. By the end of
the regular season, he was shooting like eighty five percent
of the free throw line for a span of about
two three weeks. So we know what's in there. It's
it always seems to coincide with him taking an extra beat,
extra second, taking his time at the.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Free throw line.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
But he's so juiced up, especially in a game like this,
you understand why, you know his touch might go a
little bit.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
I think Franz needs to get to the free throw line.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Needs to attack and and and try to initiate the contact.
When he's going at christophs Perzingis, it feels like good
things happen. But you know, we talked about this last week.
His game is so contingent on using the angles, it's
not really contingent on going through through the defender and
so maybe inviting some of the contact, trying to play
the game a little bit when number twenty two would
(11:03):
be a good way to get to the free throw line.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
But then to make him, because he is one of
our best rethrow shooters, you got to make him.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Ninety four point eight points per game, that's the worst
in the postseason. Ninety four point eight points per game.
That is the worst in the postseason. Your field goal
percentage is forty three point four percent, that is tied
for third worst. Your three point percentage right is twenty
eight percent twenty eight percent. That is the worst in
the NBA so far this season. Your defit, your rebounds
(11:31):
per game your fourth worst in the NBA with thirty
eight point eight rebound There are so many areas where
if you can clean it up. Think about how close
these games are, right, These are the margins that we're
talking about. These games are so close. They come down
to the difference of a possession, a missed free throw,
a miss three point, or whatever it may be. You
(11:53):
can't even scratch the surface of what you're capable of offensively.
Could tonight be the night where you finally get it
all up together? Boston's capable of doing the same thing.
But how great would that be if tonight was the
night no pressure, you're not expected to win, you just
go out there, play loose and free, and then it
all comes together tonight and.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
D I think that's what That's what I'm kind of
holding on for, for the cole Anthony's and the Anthony Blacks,
and Gary and some of the bench guys, even Wendell,
who's actually played very well.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
I think at times.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
In this series, just let it go, man, you know,
I mean Wen Dell is so he is such a
cerebral player, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. You got
nothing to lose tonight, the pressure nothing matters, right, It's
just forty eight minutes of basketball gets.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Some really good team exactly.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Just go out there, leave it all on the line, fight,
but have some fun with it as well, and see
what happens.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Think about this, Jake. This Boston Celtics team, for as
good as they were offensively all year, eighteen three is
a game right in the postseason. They are dead last
in assists per game seventeen point eight. Set. This incredible
offense is averaging seventeen point eight assists game. That's almost
ten fewer than what they average during the season. So
everything for them has been ISO. They've been able to
(13:05):
create mismatches, they've been able to take advantage of the
size on the mismatches, and this is where their points
are coming from. They're coming from the free throw line.
They're not able to knock down threes, they're taking advantage
of mismatches, and they're using their size and they're scoring
in ISO. And they have two of the best in
the world to do that in Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown.
And then you put Kristaps porzingis at seven to three
in there as well. He's been able to take advantage
(13:27):
of that. Can you clean some of that up? Can
you fight a little the harder through switches rot can
you not switch? Can you fight through and stay with
your man, guard your yard. All of those things is
what it's going to take here tonight. And they've guarded
better than anybody this defense. I'm telling you, this is
something that Magic fans should be incredibly proud of, and
we're hoping that it can hold up for one more game?
(13:48):
Can we force a game six? If we do, Orlando
Magic dot Com is where you get your playoff tickets.
Orlando Magic dot Com is where you get all your
playoff tickets and you can get season tickets for next year.
That's what it comes down to tonight, winner, go home,
stave off elimination. The Magic of the Celtics will be
back with more Magic Insiders.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
In a moment. This is Franz Wagner, and you're listening
to Magic Insiders with my guys Dante Marcatelli and Tank
Chapmans on the home with the Magic ninety six to
nine the.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Game and welcome back every one of his Magic Insiders,
presented by International Diamond Center, Dante Marketelli and Jake Chapman.
Here with you the Orlando Magic trying to stave off elimination.
Can they do so? Tonight We'll have it for you
at eight o'clock right here on ninety six to nine,
a game eight o'clock on Fandual Sports Network. And right now,
let's get you our call the game. It's brought to
you by Glip from ring Central. We think the way
(14:35):
you work with secure meetings and messaging on any device
with Glip by RingCentral. Visitlip dot com to learn more. Jake,
I'm going to take a quick pivot and then we'll
come back because obviously tonight's game is most important, but
I got to get your thoughts on the Miami Heat.
Their historic loss last night. So many records were set
right an elimination game. No team's ever lost by fifty
(14:56):
five points. The final was one thirty eight to eighty
three to eighty three. They lost by fifty five. They
were down by thirty nine at half time. They trailed
by sixty at one point in this game. They've lost
by ninety two points in the last two games combined.
That has never happened before, and they lost the entire
series by one hundred and twenty two points, that is
(15:16):
the most in NBA history, twoth thicks. How much do
you enjoy the heck out of that? Right? And does
that a little bit of a little bit of a
hit to heat culture? Are we talking about maybe a
little bit of a chicken the heat culture armor?
Speaker 4 (15:31):
I would think so. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
I it just it's really hard to believe that a
team with that strong of.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
A culture and a and a fabric and that that
level of fight and never back down. And they were
down by sixty with two minutes and change left in
the basketball game, indeed a five zero run to make
it eight times eighty three.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Look, I think it was a lost season, to be sure.
I mean, some of the guys are trying out there,
You're going, okay, it's what do you expect if Pella
Larson is playing fifteen twenty minutes against the Cavaliers.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
In Round one?
Speaker 3 (16:07):
But but the bottom line is there is what do
you say.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
The same about couldn't you if you're if you're if
you don't follow the magic? Couldn't you say the same
about Kayleb Houston or Corey Joseph. Right, look at this
tweet from Justin Turmany. Right, we were both justin Turmany fans. Right,
you've had him on your podcast before he tweeted out yesterday.
There are two Florida teams in the NBA playoffs. The
Magic are fighting tooth and nail on every possession. The
(16:32):
Heat have rolled over and died. Now you tell me
what team has a culture? How about that from Justmany? Right,
from Justin Turmany, from your mouth to God's ears? How
about Justin Tamany who loves the Hot takes on on
NBA serious radio, terrific broadcaster with Eddie Johnson. How about
that take from what we've seen? Right? Does that not
(16:53):
does that not show what we've seen here in this series?
From your Orlando Magic, No.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
One hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
And look, Bam and Tyler are also our player. Like there,
you have two all stars on your team. I don't
care if you're playing the Cavaliers. You shouldn't get beat
by fifty five points in an elimination game. I mean
that seam clearly punted in and Sposher knew it was
coming because after Game three he said it was kind
of embarrassing. I know, you know, I know it looked
like we weren't trying, but we were. We're fighting really hard.
(17:17):
I mean, he took the harpoons for the guys, but
nobody believed him. Everybody knows that this Heat team, you know,
the apex of their season was getting out of the
play in tournament. And look, and there were times during
games one and two where they played Cleveland, you know,
to a draw, anybody expected them to win, to win.
What was the one stat I saw they were they
(17:38):
were up? It was Tim Tim had it, Tim Reynolds.
They were up. They were up fifteen to six in
Game three, I think at the beginning of the game,
and since then the Cavs had outscored him one ninety
to seventy or something like that, or one seventy to
ninety or something insane.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
I mean, they just they.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Absolutely burnt it all out.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
And they've been thinking, i think since halftime of Game two,
about where they're going to where they're vacationing. So look,
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna bury Heat culture altogether,
because the feeling is that, you know, you try Jimmy
Butler away, you're probably not going to the conference finals.
That season, and they will probably reload a little bit
this summer. But the bottom line is that that is
(18:21):
as embarrassing as it's been maybe in the history of
the Heat franchise.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
That was pretty bad last night, and they got to
wear it.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Jimmy Butler, obviously, this is what he does. Everywhere he goes.
He forces his way out and it'll be unceremonious at
some point with the Golden State Warriors, no question about it.
But ironically, on the same night he helps Golden States
not advanced, but get some of the three games to one.
And you heard Tyler hero at the end say, you know,
I can't win without Jimmy, right, I need Jimmy to
win and to be successful here, and that that's not
(18:48):
a good line to throw out there. I just wonder
the further Jimmy Butler goes it's unfair, but does it
look worse on pat Riley? If Jimmy Butler and the
Warriors get all the way to the NBA Finals, that's
a tough that's a tough hit that pat Riley's going
to take. Even though he had no choice, he had
to do this. He had, But somehow Heat fans will
(19:08):
rationalize that it's his fault and not Jimmy Butler's, but
hopefully not, Hopefully it doesn't get to that point. The
point is, Jake, that I think what is happening with
Miami is what everyone nationally thought would happen to the
Magic against the Boston Celtics. These are the defending champs.
These are the guys that are tried and true. These
are the guys with Tatum and Brown, all NBA players,
and two other All Stars in Porzingis and Holiday. This
(19:31):
is the team that was supposed to do that to
the Orlando Magic. And we're like the pesky little younger brother.
We won't go away. We're still here. We keep fighting,
we keep holding our own. Can you dig down deep
and find a way to get one more here tonight?
What a statement that would be. You've already raised a
lot of eyebrows, You've already got the respect of people
nationally and all of us in Central Florida. But man,
(19:54):
could you imagine what that would do for the confidence
of these young guys if you could bring this back
to Orlando.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yeah, I think that it goes back to what we
were talking about. The reason that Miami wilted is because
they're two stars wilted in my opinion, and the reason
that we're having with the Boston Celtics is because our
two stars are playing like it's the last basketball game
that they'll ever play. And that's why my call of
the game is that Franz Wagner is going to erase
the memory of the one of fifteen Game seven loss
(20:20):
in Cleveland last night, the last time he played last season,
the last time he played an elimination game, he did
not perform the way that he wanted to. And so
I think we're going to get a vintage late November
Franz Wagner performance from this season tonight. I like thirty points,
I like, you know, six plus assists, something like that.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
I don't know we win the.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Game, Dante, It's going to be really difficult, But I
know that our guys are not going to go down
like the Miami Heat went down last night.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
That's for sure.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
That's for sure. No, it's going to be much more
competitive they'll be in this basketball game, and it would
not surprise me if this thing comes all the way
down to the end and they find a way to win.
But it's going to be tough. The Celtics are very
difficult in this building, and they kind of lure you
in because they don't really go all out in the
first half. And the Magic have been in. They've led
in the first half of Game one, They're only down
three in the first half of Game two, but that
(21:06):
third quarter is when they deliver that knockout blow. Can
you weather that storm? Can you take their best hit
in the first half and at the start of that
third quarter, then find a way to dig through, And
can you at some point in this series knockdown shots,
Jake Chapman, that is what it's gonna take to knock
off the defending champions. And hopefully it all comes together
tonight here at TD Garden. We will have it for you. Hopefully,
(21:28):
hopefully this is not the last game of the season.
If it is, we'll be back tomorrow with our final
Magic Insiders of the season. And if not, we send
this back to Orlando and we'll continue with Magic Insiders
throughout the week. So, Jake, let's get a win, and
let's hope tomorrow is not our final Magic Insiders of
the season. Let's get it.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
I'm ready to go. Let's get it. At eight o'clock, tonight.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
You'll have it eight o'clock on the radio radio on
ninety six to nine. The game, we'll have it myself
and Brian Hill the pregame show eight o'clock on fan
Duel Sports Network. Let's bring this thing back to the yell.
We'll talk to you tomorrow
