Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local
diamond experts since nineteen eighty one. And now here are
your hosts, Dante Marcitelli and Jake Chapman, and.
Speaker 5 (00:50):
We come every one of those Magic Insiders presented by
International Diamond Center. Dante Marcitelli, Jake Chapman here with you
and you're moving on, folks, Magic fans, we are shipping
off to Boston.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
The Magic are officially in the playoffs. They were the
first team.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
To advance from the play in scenario The Golden State
Warriors would do it about two hours later. But the
Magic are in and they're going to face the Boston Celtics.
We have the schedule for you. We'll get you that
what lies ahead for this Magic team, and everything will
break down. Last night's game, they win one twenty to
ninety five blowout the Atlanta Hawks, a forty one to
(01:24):
twenty two fourth quarter. They were up by six heading
into the fourth quarter and they outscore Atlanta forty one
to twenty two. This is after an eighteen point third quarter,
which I'm over our third quarters, Jake. We just have
to I don't know how we do it, but we
have to figure out these third quarters. You're certainly going
into the playoffs, but to bounce back in a big way.
You put up one hundred and twenty points on Atlanta,
(01:45):
You hold one of the highest scoring teams in the
NBA to ninety five points. You survive twenty eight points
from Trey Young, You get twelve rebounds, seven assists from
Dyson Daniels, but fifteen from George Niang and that was
really the only other factor. And the Magic are led
by twenty six points from Cole Anthony off the bench,
nineteen from Wendell Carter Junior. I want to break you
(02:05):
down all of this because I thought each guy had
a stretch of the game where they stepped it up right,
where they took over. I thought Jonathan Isaac saved our
bacon last night. I thought he did yet again. I
thought him coming in with his effort. I thought that
woke up Wendell. I thought that got him going and
got him energized and saw, oh yeah, this is the
impact I can have. And he was an animal in
(02:26):
that basketball game last night. But your thoughts, Jake Chapman,
you had the call to a Jeff Turner a fantastic
job and just kind of give us your recap everything
from last night for us from your perspective.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Oh what a fun night. Working with Jeff is always
a blast. He's the absolute best you can speak to that.
So anytime Jeff's up there, you know it's a special
game or a preseason game, and you know we're gonna
have fun. That's right, regardless. No, we did an awesome job.
I think on Trey Young, Look, he got his twenty eight,
but he didn't get it as eleven and a half assists, right,
And the Magic has done a good job of limiting
(02:58):
him in that regard. All season, he comes in averaging
just over eight assists per game against US and a
whole bunch of turnovers which he was able to avoid
last night. That was a really low turnover game last night,
seven for them and eight for US when all was
said and done. But what that meant was it was
also a low pace game. Right Nobody was getting up
and down, and that's magic basketball, especially against a team
(03:18):
like that. It's exactly what you wanted to do.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Isn't that big though We talked about that yesterday.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Don't let Dyson Daniels muck things up and steal and
head out the other way.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
You protected the basketball great.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Point, absolutely, and we ended up you know, some of
it I think was in the fourth quarter when things
kind of got it out of hand. We ended up
with nineteen fast break points. But for much of that game,
when it really mattered was it was it was played
at our pace, so I think that was important. You
jumped all over them, and so I think it was
thirty two to seventeen after one, and then it was
a twenty two point lead at one point in the
(03:49):
second quarter. They got it all the way down to three.
You're right, the third quarter got precarious there. But you know,
and this is something that I wasn't really thinking about,
but Jeff Turner brought up a really good point. Just
don't give up the lead entirely as it starts right,
it starts creeping down and getting down to three. And
who could speak to it better than Jeff The mentality
when you blow the lead entirely and they get their
(04:11):
first lead since seventeen sixteen or whatever that did you
know that alters things and the magic were able to
hold on in that very important stretch in the third
quarter and then just bust it open in the fourth.
And you're right. Like we talked all day yesterday about
who's the X factor? Basically anybody who said anybody was right.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
They all took different turns, did they not?
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Everybody played a role in that win last night. And
we will, we'll go through it. But you know, Cole
Cole obviously, and what a cool story. We knew back
in November when the guy was out of the rotation
he was going to play a role at some point
and he needed to keep his head down and come
through it. And he said, you know, talk about saved
to Bacon. He was amazing last night. The bench, I mean,
the bench was was the difference maker in that game
(04:55):
last night, just.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
To be sure.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
But but Cole is certainly going to get the sh
But yeah, Ji was huge. And Anthony Black we talked
to on the walkoff. He was fantastic. And so you
survive a game where you get thirty points combined from
Paulo and Franz, you hung one hundred and twenty last night.
It was an awesome team effort. And defensively, I mean
that's you know, the Atlanta Hawk shop thirty eight percent.
(05:18):
And then Trey Young got ejected for quote making a
mockery of the game.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
According to yeah, how about that?
Speaker 3 (05:25):
She was the crew chief last night. So that was
a fun night. And uh, and it's always nice to
send Trey Young and the Hawks away with an.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
L Well, that's your republic enemy number one, him or
LaMelo ball.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Those are right up there for you. For you, for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
I've actually softened over the years the entree. I've softened
a little over the years. On Trey it's Lamello number one,
par none for me.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
But you saw the antics that the and he held
a third quarter.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
I called him unethical last night, the third quarter foul hunting.
When he came out, I said that it's all I
know basketball.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
You lost Trey, Trey Young got himself kicked out of
the game when you reversed when we made that challenge,
which was a critical point of the game. When we
made the challenge and Polo never touched them. And this
is one of those things like you don't need to
look at a mirror when Polo turns around and says,
I didn't touch them. You just waved the finger. Let
Jamal did, like, let's go, let's do this, and we
got We got the back of our best player.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Then he was absolutely right.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
He never touched him, and Trey hated that, and that's
when you had him, and that's when everything turned. But
you know, I, I think we I want to dance
around this delicately. I would not have sat Fronz and
Polo for six days and last night was why. To me,
they just were out of sorts. They're playing the best
basketball of their career and then they do nothing for
(06:38):
six days. So I think it's hard to ramp that up.
And we saw that they combined for thirty points last night.
But I understand why, Okay, they were rusty, but at
least you have them. Now that's assuming they're going to
go out there and get hurt. You don't know that
they're going to go out and get hurt, but that
is assuming that there is that possibility.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
So you rest them.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Hopefully they got that out of their system, because the
other reason if you rest them for six days, you
play one game, you don't play again for six days.
Like that's the thing you're talking one game in two weeks,
twelve days that you're talking about. And I think that's
hard for anybody to battle through. But if anybody can
do it, it's those two. So they ended up doing it.
And so what happens. This is what I love about
(07:14):
Pollow and Franz. And then we got to get into
the others, Jake, So we'll fly through this. But thirty
points combined, as you mentioned, from Pollow and Franz. But
this is what I love about these guys, and this
is what this Magic fan base needs to really appreciate.
Thirteen rebounds from Franz, reassists, two steals, nine rebounds from Pollow,
ban Caro seven assists, and one block shot. Right, So
(07:35):
these guys and Franz had a block as well. They
made sure two, three, four guys were on pollow at
all times. They were gonna make life a living hell
for Polo bank Caro, and they did. He started two
of eleven. Everywhere he looked there were guys, and so
he decided, you know, I'm gonna get other guys involved,
and I'm still gonna hit the glass.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
And Franz Wagner did the same thing. I'm same as Powell.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
I'm we're gonna defend our tails off, We're gonna rebound,
and we're gonna set up our teammates. I thought that
was a masterclas on how to combat what they were
doing to you defensively.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Absolutely, And you know, we knew going into that game
that that is a team that we should be able
to kind of bully a little bit and kind of
beat up, right like between Mohammed Gay and Klongo was
a big customer. But they just don't have in Resa
che is rail thin. I just don't have a whole
bunch of guys with our heft, and so I thought
(08:24):
we should be able to control the glass. Yeah, for
Franz Vokner to end up the game's leading rebounder with
thirteen boards. That is awesome. That is helping out when
you don't have the jumper go And he couldn't hit
the broadside of a barn on three balls. He was
open too. They did what teams have done. They packed
the paint. That takes Franz and Polo out of it. Now,
what's on the other guys to knock down shots. Luckily
(08:45):
Cole got red hot, but then Anthony Black was perfect
three or three from three point range as well. The
numbers don't look great. It's twenty eight percent, but you
made eleven and as we know, and this magic team
makes ten or more threes.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Yes, yea, they're really definitely tough to beat.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
And then Polow, You're right, like they were loading up
on him in the first quarter. He just kept getting
to the free throw line. That jump started the offense.
That's so huge. Look, I understand they're gonna pack. I
said this to Jeff at one point. I understand teams
are going to pack the pain against us. That doesn't
mean we just got to keep shooting three. We gotta
figure out a way to get in there and create
something because we're getting you know, we're generating these wide open,
(09:21):
inside out looks, which we want, but sometimes I feel
like the pressure is, you know, the more open we are,
less likely we are.
Speaker 5 (09:29):
And Jake and there were stretches that they they literally
as we were going into our shot just turned their back, yes,
and could have done I mean, just daring us to shoot.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
And it was working in that third quarter, sadly, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Absolutely for Polow to end up with seven assists, the
six plus assists is always a huge sign. And then
those guys ended up combining for three steals and two
blocks as well, by the way, three turnovers for Polo,
two for Franz.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Yes, so you know the ball is.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Going to be in their hands and there are going
to be nights where they don't have it. I mean
we count on thirty from pollow night in a night
out let alone follow and from combined, and so their
teammates stepped up in a big way. And that's why
you know, in the postseason you've got to control those
other things. The rebounding, the turnovers, the free throws, all
those little things play in very, very heavily, especially over
(10:15):
the course of a seven game series. If we want
to beat the Boston Celtics. We got to check all
of those boxes, yes, first and foremost, and so you
played a pretty clean game last night, all things considered.
The percentages from the perimeter weren't great, but you made
shots when you needed to. And like you said, if
you can just sort of I mean, you score thirty
two in the first, twenty nine in the second, forty
(10:37):
one in the fourth, and then you got that you
laid that egg in the third quarter. You button that
up a little bit, and now we're cooking them with gas.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Well, and you're going to be in every game in
this series against Boston because things slow down in the
way you defend, right, So you and your strength is
running people off the line.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Right.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
So we'll have we'll have three days the rest of
this week to two more days after today to break
down that series and get ready for Game one and
then and then all of next week. But some of
your strengths are going to come into play against the
Boston Celtics. But you got to be able to make shots.
You're not going to survive a game in that series
if you only make five threes. Can you do it
making eleven like you did last night? Yeah, absolutely you can.
So that's going to be critical, But listen, I want
(11:13):
to get your thoughts on this before we go into break.
And it's never enough time to discuss Cole Anthony and
the impact he can have on this team. But we
know every time Polo and Franz touched the basketball in
that building, there is an air, there is an electricity.
There are fans on the edge of their seat. They
can't wait to see how this is going to end up. Right,
I would argue after that it is Cole Anthony and
(11:36):
Jonathan Isaac that can absolutely send ripples through that building.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Gogabatase has his moments as well.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
People love them some Gogabatase, but Jonathan Isaac coming in
and you mentioned being physical with their front line, we
did not do that for six minutes. When Dell came
out of the game with zero rebound, zero assists in
his first six minutes, right, And I think it was
getting There were a lot of nerves.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
There are a lot of nerves in that basket ketball game.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
And I think what Ji did coming in there and
just being reckless and challenging everything, grabbing rebounds, getting putbacks,
to me, that changed the landscape of the entire game
and that got the building of the juice that it
needed and then Cole Anthony making shots.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yep. The ability that.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
He has to fire up this team is unlike anyone else.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
And I thought he was special last night.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Well, I'm glad you said that about Ji first and
foremost because because I had a feeling yesterday going into
it that he might play a big role in the
entire postseason, and I think he could be the X
factor against the Boston Celtics. You're right, having it's been,
it's been, and I said this a week or two ago.
Do you he has not been as impactful. I don't
think as he was towards the end of last season,
(12:46):
but he's been available longer and I just feel like
he's been saving it up a little bit. You might
be right, and if he can, you know, we don't
need thirty minutes a night. We need eighteen to twenty
two minutes where you're playing like you're like your asses
on fire.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Yes, yeah, right, exactly exact where your hair.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Is on fire, to be a little bit more politically correct.
And you're right, that's what happened last night. He was
he was he was like a terror out there and
he crashed the glass eight.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Eight, But that did you not feel everything change?
Speaker 3 (13:17):
For sure? And that's that's what he does. I mean,
for if we can have the best defensive player in
the world for eighteen minutes a night and he is
capable of that, he and I'm not sure he's capable
of it for thirty minutes. I don't know if anybody
is with the impact that he's capable of having in
that time span. But bringing him off the bench and
saying just go just go wreck their game plan, right,
(13:40):
Just go fly around, don't worry about picking up files,
crash the glass, be physical, and and do what what
very few people in the world can do, which is
essentially cover an entire team. That's our guy, and that
is that's a pretty special ace in the hole for
Jamal Moseley.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
You think Porzingis or Jason Tatum want anything to do
with a two seven matchup, a first round matchup with
this defense and that guy hounding them all series.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
And the size and then two wings that you guys
got to match up with that that how many teams
in the league have have two jumbo scoring wings that
can go toe to toe with the jats.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Things I don't listen.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
I have no preconceived notions that we're gonna go up
there and sweep the Celtics.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
But we can. We can be competitive in this series.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
We can be very competitive, and we can win a
few games, if not shocked them.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
I do believe a.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Lot of things have to go our way for sure,
but it could happen. But I well, Boston would have
rather seen Atlanta. Chicago. Certainly Atlanta right to say.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Yeah, yeah, there were a lot of people rooting for
the Hawks last night, and they were in they were
in Georgia, and they were in Massachusetts, right think right,
it was certainly how I look at that a terrific
opportunity for this Orlando Magic team. They'll move it on
and after everything is said and done, man, you made
the playoffs and that is just one unbelievable accomplishment and
given everything that you had to battle this entire season.
(15:03):
So congratulations to them, and hey, we'll see where it goes.

Speaker 5 (16:38):
And Game one Magic Celtics will be Sunday, Easter Sunday
at three point thirty. That is ABC exclusive. There will
be no local telecast, so ABC exclusive. You can go
to Orlando Magic dot com and get all all the
game days and all the all the times and where
you can find them. But every single game will be
on ninety six to nine. The game, every single Magic
(16:59):
playoff game will be called by Jake Chapman on ninety
six to nine in the game. Game two will be
Wednesday in Boston, so we're going Sunday Wednesday, seven o'clock.
Game three, our first one in Orlando, will be Friday
at seven o'clock, and then Game four will be Sunday
in Orlando at seven o'clock. And then games five, six,
and seven will be the twenty ninth, May first, and
May third, And obviously we have to see if they
(17:21):
how much, how many of those are necessary, and what
they'll be on. But that's the schedule. Jake, what are
your thoughts on the schedule initially bring it on?
Speaker 3 (17:30):
I think you look, yes, the bottom line is we're
becoming I think last year you sort of understood whether
the magic havs four to five got buried. As far
as the national spotlight goes, we're getting to the point
and I think the fact that we're an exclusive game
on Sunday probably has a lot more to do with
the defending champion Celtics than it does us. But we're
getting to the point now where people want to watch us,
and we've got recognizable young players, we've got an international
(17:53):
flavor that always you know, plays well this time of year,
especially up in secaucas when they're making these decisions, and
so look, it's I think I think when you start
to look through and of course we'll figure out what
the one eights look like soon. But when I start
to look through like Houston Golden State, that sounds like
a good series for hoop heads. And obviously everybody wants
(18:15):
to watch Golden State, but nobody cares. Nobody knows. No
casual NBA fan knows anything about the Houston Rockets this year.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
True, and so I.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Think we're we're all of a sudden for a two
seven matchup. It's it's pretty intriguing for your casual NBA fan.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
No NB, no local TV for Sunday Easter Sunday that's
on ABC, but the other ones will be on Fan
Duel Sports, FanDuel Sports Network, so we will have those.
And then of course every game is on ninety six
nine in the game.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
Okay, we got to get you to work.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Wait, we're talking about Paul and Froze.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Goodness.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
I had last night off, which was amazing. For the
first time in my life, I sat in my seats
as a fan with my family and had no game obligations.
We sat through it, We embraced it. I was hugging
Al Magico, right, I was talking out all the all
the all the big fans that were down there.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
It was awesome.
Speaker 5 (18:59):
It was awesome just to just be there and be
able to take that all in and you know, in
such an impactful game to win and move on. Okay,
we discussed Cole Anthony how big he was, and I
want to leave time. The last minute is going to
be our real calls of the game. I want people
to hear the Cole Anthony bucket that you called, and
I want people to hear you explaining how Trey Young
was leaving the basketball game. So I want to leave
(19:19):
those for our callers of the game at the end.
But one guy that I thought would be an X
factor last night and really in the series against the
Boston Celtics was Anthony Black and I thought it was huge.
I don't right when he checked into the basketball game.
I can't remember if it was a missed shot that
ended up in his lap, was it an airball that
landed in his lap and he laid it in, or
(19:40):
was it an unbelievable pass.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
That it was an airball?
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Right, Yeah, he caught and laid in, And I thought
to myself right then at that moment, that is huge.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
He's got all the nerves in the world for this.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
Big game and a ball literally landed in his lap
so he could lay it in right.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
That's great.
Speaker 5 (19:55):
Nerves nerves erased. Very next time he touched the ball,
he hits a three transition. He was tremendous last night,
and I think he has a chance to be a
star of this series as well.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
That's a great point. It's almost like in uh, you
know in the sandlot where Smalls closes his eyes and
the ball find just went into his glove.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Yes, thank you, No, you're right.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Because because it's you know, we mentioned it yesterday and
Jeff mentioned it last night. AB didn't play last year
in the postseason. Yeah, he started thirty something games when
you were injured at the beginning of the year. But
there were difference this this there's a huge difference. Obviously,
there's a huge difference between AB now and AB from
a year ago. True too, he was so raw.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
Man, so green.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
He didn't even play that much at Arkansas because he
had injury issues, and so you know, he is just
scratching the surface of his potential. He's a smart player,
and so you're able you're able to watch him develop
with him on the floor, like it's not one of
those things where he's got to get to this level
because he's going to tear you down. If he has
a bad night, he's still not turning the ball over
eight times and taking twelve bad shots.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
No, right, he might.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
He might turn the ball over a few times and
he might not knocked down his six or seven shots,
but he's too smart a player to have bad games
where he really impacts the team negatively.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
Last night he was.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
He was phenomenal. He had two block shots. He's one
of the best shot blockers for a perimeter player. He
made all three of his threes, which always helps. And
he had one very well placed elbow in the fourth
quarter that as he was falling out of bounds that
I think was the impetus to Trey getting himself kicked
out of that game. AB he's got some instigator.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
In him, now, Yes he does. Yes, he does.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Stir the pod a little bit, and I love it.
He for that guy to be fearless with Trey Young
staring down on the other side of the barrel.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
If that's fantastic, all right, that's going to do it.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
For this edition of Magic Insiders presented by International Diamond Center.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
And now for your.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
Moment of zen as we go to break it is
Jake Chapman's call of the basically the nail on the
conference from Cole Anthony, and we wave audios to Trey Young.
Have a great afternoon, everybody, and we'll be back with
more Magic Insiders tomorrow three o'clock. Right, here's Trey Young
and hey, pretty black went with him, knocked it away
(22:07):
and then gave him a little elbow into the front row.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
About Paul the knockout blow got it stone Paul Anthony
one O seven eighty five, four fifty to go, and
that might do it.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Young gets to the tear drop, got the bucket up
and good, and he got teed up.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
He chucked the ball at the official. You can't do
that tray. He was looking for one.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
There, yes he was, and he might boot that ball
into the front row and he got thrown out of
the game. Wow, And he's taking his ball and going
home literally
