Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Magic Insiders with Dante Marctelli and Jane Chefman.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Step back over, Durrance shot us up, Carro drills it
and the foal change for a three point point big
time bank came fort headed.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Back the way. A steal by Franz Fondner to run out.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
The fog and get my to it.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Fronz Fagner and the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I'm like, if this is your daily destination for all
the latest on the Orlando match.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Over the wind down, Now back to Kalin. He's gonna
try another three, take out another one forty seconds man,
Carol Jumper. Whoo.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Magic Insiders is presented by International Diamond Center, your local
diamond experts since nineteen eighty one. And now here are
your hosts, Dante Marcitelli and Jake Chapman.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Hey, welcome everyone to Magic Insiders were presented by International
Diamond Center of Dante Marcitelli. He's Jake Kapman and how
about the Orlando magic A dude, win, go off?
Speaker 4 (01:00):
What are the other Jake, You're the veritable wordsmith. What
are the other?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
One of the other titanic enormous?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
What are the other words we could use? To describe
last night's win against the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
It was monumental, it was yes, it was humongous, it
was clutch, it was yes, it was all.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
All of those things, all of those things, A terrific
win against the Atlanta Hawks. So now you clinched the
tie breaker with that victory last night, one nineteen to
one twelve over Atlanta. Thirty three points, ten rebounds, four
assists for a Polo Bancaro, who was just I mean,
he's there, he's out of the stratosphere. I mean, it's
a it's a handful of players that can do what
he's doing right now. And thirty points, fourteen rebounds for
(01:41):
on Jeka Kongu. He had himself a night and you survived.
Twenty eight points, eight ten assists. Make it for Trey
Young and now the Magic move within one game of
five hundred. They are thirty nine and forty with three
games to go. You're two games clear of the Atlanta Hawks.
Your three games clear of the Chicago Bulls. With Chicago's
low last night at Cleveland at Cleveland, congratulations to them.
(02:03):
They clinched the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
Now the Orlando Magic cannot be caught by the Miami Heat.
They can still be caught by the Atlanta Hawks and
the Chicago Bulls. But a win tonight against the Boston
Celtics or one win the rest of the way, and
you clinch the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. So
it'd be nice to take take all the variables out
(02:26):
of the equation and just grab the victory tonight against
the Boston Celtics. We'll have it for you at six
thirty right here on ninety six to nine a game
and six thirty on FanDuel Sports networked couple Celtics in
overtime last night win in New York and they are
now locked in the two seeds. So Cleveland's got one.
They're locked in the two seed. Hopefully an opportunity on
fan Appreciation Night to grab a victory against the Boston
(02:47):
Celtics and that would clinch seven and that would get
you to five hundred. But first, what a win last night, Jake.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
That was just terrific.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
It was a good win. It you know, you were
a little nervous that you might have kind of a
slow start or I want to call it russ, but
you know, this time of year, having four days without
without the pressure and the the need to get going
at seven pm. You just sort of wondered what it
(03:13):
would look like if if they were locked in. Man,
I mean they were locked in on the scouting report,
they were locked in from the get go, and Atlanta,
as we know, they stick around, and so just you know,
a nine point lead just sort of scares you against
the Atlanta Hawks, and even even late in the game,
you were like, okay, oh absolutely, we pushed it past fourteen,
(03:33):
like it's They're just a team who could fill it up.
And you know, Trey Young is always a game for
a stretch like that or a moment like that. But
you just kept playing, and the game tightened up in
the second half, as we sort of thought it would.
Scort sixty six first half points, it felt like it
was gonna be a little too close to the track
meet that you and I and Jamal Moseley and anybody
who knows the magic didn't want to see. But you
(03:57):
came out. You played magic basketball for sure in the
second half. And boy, I mean we got to start
with Powell, of course, but how about Wendell Carter Junior.
One a night he had six steals a career high
three block shots. Coach Bosey raving about his presence. After
the game, Kenny knocked down another three triples. You get
two off the bench from Kleb. It's another game. It
(04:19):
sounds weird saying it. It's another game, Dante, where you
made fourteen threes and all of a sudden, you know,
we're getting to ten or eleven, twelve, fourteen threes almost
every night now, and when this Magic team knocks down triples.
We had KCP on the walkoff. I said, you know
how good this defense is. When you're making threes like this,
you can put anybody right you guys believe that? He said, absolutely.
(04:41):
He said, the defense is going to keep us in
the game. But right now starting to find a rhythm offensively,
and that can be really scary. So it's things are
looking pretty good right now. Obviously it's another tough test tonight.
We don't know what Boston's rotation will look like. But
here you are. You know, we said a couple of
weeks ago, but if you could just make your way
to five hundred, that'll be something. When you are what
(05:03):
six or seven games below five hundred, Magic are playing
the best basketball of the season. Right now, they're relatively
healthy and the rest of the week in the next
couple of weeks could be really exciting.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Well, and it's interesting too because this game may not
mean anything for Boston, so we don't know what we'll see.
And it looks to be that Indiana is probably locked
into four right so I don't know that that's going
to mean anything for Indiana. Milwaukee can't catch them, and
with the loss by the Knicks, you know they can't
fall down, and I don't think Indiana is in jeopardy
(05:34):
of being able to catch the Knicks, so it might
be some tiebreaker implications, but we don't know what's going
to happen on Friday, So Friday we might not get
anything from Indiana, and then Sunday that game could mean
absolutely nothing. In Atlanta, however, they could be fighting off
Miami and Chicago to try to get that eight seed,
So that could absolutely mean something for the Atlanta Hawks.
But you could have an opportunity. I mean, if you
go if you win these last three games, you're forty
(05:56):
two and forty, which is which is ridiculous when you
think about where this team was about a month month
and a half ago. If you go two in one,
you're five hundred and I think a five hundred season
forty one and forty one. That's six wins off of
last year's pace. I know you look to be better
than you were last year, but given everything you had
to overcome, that's certainly nothing to sneeze out.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Lots to get to JK.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
We kind of want to run through at Polo ban Cao,
Wendell KCP, and then I want to go around the
association because we've got to touch on the Michael Malone situation.
Didn't get a chance to do that in Luka Doncic
back in Dallas here tonight, So lots to get to
here in the second segment. But Polo Banco told us
last night on the walk off, what kind of coverages
are you seeing? And what did you see tonight and
how are you able to attack it? He goes, well,
(06:37):
they decided to single coverage tonight. He goes, which is fine.
I like that, and I started thinking, you're the Atlanta
Hawks're one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA,
if not the worst defensive team in the NBA. You've
got a red hot Pollo ban Caro who's playing like
an MVP here since the All Star break, and your
decision is to single cover him, single cover him for
(06:59):
a credit game to keep you with a chance to
get seven in the Eastern Conference. And now one part
he may be looking at recent reports and saying, OK,
well they're shooting the three better, so we can't pull
anybody off of Core in KCP. That's the value in that.
That's what we have been saying since day one. You
got to take some pressure off of them. But if
(07:19):
it wasn't that, boy, that was a horrible game plan
to go single coverage.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
We like when you single cover Paula bank Caro as well.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
It blew my mind done. I spent the whole pre
game yesterday talking about Quinn Sniders. Clinch Center is not
gonna let Paulo beat them one on one right for
Fronz and were gonna knock down Threesdi, There just aren't
players in the league who can defend Paula bank Carroll
one on one. I mean, I'll give you a Draymond,
you know, I'll give you yeah, honest. I mean you
need to be as physically imposing as he is so
(07:48):
that he can't go through you. And then in the
case of Anyaka and Congo, who is a very impressive
young man, had a great offensive game. Paul is able
to go around that guy. He's the combination of speed
and quick, speed and size. And this is what we've
been talking about his entire career, going back to Freaking Oday,
(08:08):
is it's just so rare. He's he's he is a
matchup nightmare because if you put somebody smaller audible, shoot
right over him or go right through him if it's
somebody slighter, and then if it's somebody not as quick,
he can go around him and get to the rack.
I mean, he's just got everything going right now, and
it just seems like, you know, it just seems like
he's playing by himself on the playground. I mean, he's
(08:30):
just out there basically, you know. I don't want to
say going through the motions because that has a negative connotation.
It feels like he's just running drills on teams right now,
you know, Yeah, because okay, I'm gonna try I'm gonna
try my drop step now and then get it.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
He's getting such elevation on that jumper, the step back
when he gets to certain spots, the elbow when you
get him in stride and he can kind of catch
it and keep the dribble going. He can pull up,
he can score on anybody. The you know, the three
point shot is coming around. He knocked down Uh, he
knocked down two more last night, two for five. But
the ten rebounds. You know, Mom said you got a rebound,
so he's out there rebounding. So Mam Moronda says, you
(09:05):
got a rebound, you go out there and rebound. So
he's been fantastic. And then you look at another whole
hum night from Franz Wagner, right, just say, okay, well
he's been pretty solid. But you look down and it's
twenty two again, right, six rebounds, six assists. He's got
more assists than anybody on the Magic team last night.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Right.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
So now it's eleven straight games of twenty points for
Franz Wagner. It's eleven straight for the both of them.
It's twenty straight games of twenty or more for Polo Bankero.
He's otherworldly. Ja and Jacob and we'll switch gears to
Wendell Carter Junior. We've been hard on him. We've been
hard on Wendell on this show the entire year for
majority of the year, and he's been hard on himself.
We've kind of taken our cues from Wendell and he
(09:44):
knows he has to be more aggressive. There's other things
that Wendell does that certainly helps his team. He did
it all last night. What we got from Wendell Carter
Junior last night. You don't have to have these numbers,
but you said it on the top and Coach Mosley
said it last night. His presence, he was where he
was locked in. He didn't get frustrated, he wasn't arguing
with the officials, he didn't have mental lapses out there. Defensively,
(10:06):
he gets you seventeen points, nine rebounds, six steals. The
six steals ties a Magic Franchise record for centers. He
ties Nick Vucevich and Danny Shase, which if you had
to pick centers, I don't know that I had to
pick Danny Shay's.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
But but there he is. He's right there in the mix.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
So that's the kind of idea had That's what we need.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
If when Dell can channel that, we are very dangerous.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Jake Chapman Ustavo, you own had six steals? Is that
what you said?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
I did not say that maybe not in his magic tenure.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
No, I don't believe so, I'm not sure he tally
those in his NBA career. He had two personal files
last night, and I just it's so you always can
tell if a team has a game plan or the
ability to take him out of the game, not like
let alone his game. If they're if he is committing files.
(10:55):
Sometimes they're borderline or they're questionable, like did you need
that one to slap down? That's what we talk about,
have talked about all season long, and last night he
was able to stay on the floor first and foremost.
He played thirty seven minutes when they picked up two
personals because I think he was just smarter about it.
I think part of it is the way that Atlanta plays.
It is a good matchup, but the I mean you
(11:16):
need to be to have six steals in three block
shots like that's what That's what an NBA team averages
night tonight. I mean, he was an entire defensive presence
last night and the production is that of five guys
on the floor last night. He gets a team like Atlanta,
I mean, you know there. I think their pace and
(11:37):
what they try to do offensively is going to lend
itself a little bit to that, but you needed every
bit of that last night. I mean, like I said,
that team just keeps on coming, and so I don't
know where you are without Windell's defensive presence last night.
And and then you think about what he does as
far as you know, setting screens and how he's involved
in the offense, his interior defense. He was fantast last night.
(12:00):
Did I hesitated? He's had some good games this year.
I mean, he's had a rocket out of course, he's
been availaball season, so.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Yes, it would have been huge.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
I was a little hesitant to call it his best
game because there have been games at the Cleveland game
or did sixteen points, fourteen boards, There have been games
where his where you needed every last one of his
rebounds and every last one of his points as well.
But last night, I mean that just sort of came
out of nowhere. Six steals for Wendell Carter Jor. You
had to smack me. He pinched me, I should say,
(12:28):
to make me think that was really that was awesome,
that was fantastic, and that I was play as well
against the hometown team, doesn't he?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah, Hey, well that's part of it too. You know
they're back. The game was on back in his native George.
The same with Contavious Caldwell, Pope and they and they
certainly were the stars last night. And listen, you know
for Wendell there were thirty one second chance points for
the Atlanta Hawks. That's something you got to clean up,
There's no question about it. The turnovers you got to
clean up as well. So there's certain things that that
you will win. You learned the game. You you learned
(12:54):
these lessons with the win. And coach Moseley addressed it
last night. We got to be better. We can't give
up that many when you're going into playoff up, when
youre going to the playoffs, you can't have those turnovers,
and you can't have those second chance points. So that's
something you got to clean up. Can't leave ten points
on the free throw line. Those are things that you
absolutely have to clean up. Right, go ahead, And I
got one last thought and we'll duck in a break.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Yeah, it's probably the same thought. The one thing I
wanted to say is you're right though, we got to
clean those things up. How about the fast break points?
That was a big point of emphasis heading into the
game five to five. You hold the Atlanta Hawks to average,
he was like sixteen fast right points per game. I
think it was just under seventeen, as a matter of fact,
to five points on the break. That's taking a team
out of its game plan.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
That certainly is they average one hundred and twenty four
points a game the previous ten. Coming in last night
and held him to one hundred and twelve, and you
know ten or twelve of those were late when the
game was in hand, right, They got some extra points
there real quick because we got to come back and
I want to leave time for Michael Malone and Luka
Doncic going back in a quick preview with the Boston Celtics.
But you look at KCP last night, right, So CACP
(13:53):
gets you another fifteen points, You now nine and three,
the magic of nine and three. When he gets fifteen
points in a game, he's three of six from beyond
the art. So now you go back to March first,
and he is fifty percent from three. He is fifty
percent from three if you take the thirty four makes
that he has, that is fourth best in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
It's Mike Conley, Kevin.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Durant, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Kntavious Caldwell Pope. Right, So there's
a lot of Magic fans that thought, Okay, what's happening
here now? And I think everybody understands, this is what
you wanted. This is what you got with Kntavious Caldwell
Pope and the other thing. You can now go back
to January first, Right, January first, that's a stretch of
forty two games where he is at exactly forty percent
(14:32):
from three.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
This is what you wanted.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
And he told us last night of the broadcast playoff,
Kenny has been unlocked. There was a different energy about
him last night, and he said he told the whole
team before that game last night that this is different.
These last four games, the play in game and obviously
into the playoffs are different. Now we have to treat
this like a playoff, a playoff game every single time
we're out there on the floor. And he led the
(14:55):
way with the way he played last night. Three steals
for KCP last night.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
He will he was fantastic. He has been. I think
you know, we've talked a lot about what losing Jalen
meant and how the defense could have gone completely sideways,
and it didn't. And he's obviously a huge part of that. Look, man,
I mean it's it's small sample size, but he's shooting
sixty four percent from three in the month of April
over the course of three games. That includes, of course,
(15:21):
that's seven for nine against San Antonio the other night.
And look, that's why you brought him here, not just
to knock down threes and not just to bolster your defense,
but but to get that message across in the locker room.
Contagi's called the wild Pope, has never been allowed raw
raw leader type guy, but he's got twelve years under
his belt. And so Paul and Franz will listen and
he and he plays night in and night out, and
he plays his butt off night in and night out.
(15:43):
Sets the example. And so that's that type of stuff
has a whole lot of value. And you and I
were excited about the the signing in the summertime, specifically
before that. We got a guy who's won rings two
different franchises. We've got a guy who's played deep into June,
you know, for you know, three of the last four
summers or what ever. He understands that this is a
(16:03):
different level of basketball. And yes, because he's not you know,
Dylan Brooks or whoever and squawking at his teammates. When
he does finally say okay and make a point, I
think it registers even maybe a little bit more so.
And he said we had him on the walk off.
He was great. You know, he didn't do a ton
of media. And but if you get him, if you
(16:23):
get him right off the floor, he even gets his water.
He's still kind of in the moment. He was fantastic,
and he said he he trusted all season long that
the jumpers are gonna start falling. Guess it was an
adjustment period, but when you've been doing it for twelve years,
you know, it's just like a it's just like a
hitter in baseball. Sometimes sometimes you have a bad month,
and casep had a couple of bad months. But to
(16:44):
think that that water wasn't going to eventually find its level,
I think that's just not the way, just not the
way statistics worked.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
It is.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
You're right, he's gonna get to his average, he's gonna
get to he's gonna it's gonna find its level.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
And thankfully he found it. And he even said on
the broadcast last night. They say, this is probably a
pretty good.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Time to find your rhythm, right and that's that's exactly
what it is with Contavious Caldwell, Pope and Magic fans.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
Is time to celebrate. You join us. Tonight is the
Magic take on.
Speaker 2 (17:10):

Fan Appreciation Night. We're expecting a full house as the
Magic host of Boston Celtics. More Magic Insiders when we return.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
This is Paula ben Carrold Orlando Magic. You're listening to
Magic Insiders with Dante and Jake on the Magic Flagship
Station ninety six to nine in the game.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Welcome back everyone, The Magic Insiders presented by International Diamond
Center Dante Marcotelli and Jake Chapman. Here with you the
Magic host the Boston Celtics. The third and final meeting
between the Magic and the Celtics, and they're tied a
one game apiece as or. This could be a preview
of the first round of the playoffs. If you get
through the play in as the seventh seed, then you
could play the Boston Celtics here in the first round.
(17:55):
So Boston played last night, they lost to the They
beat the New York Knicks, So don't know who will
play as we look at our official injury report. Nothing
has been declared yet, so we don't know who's available
for either team as we take a look at this.
So we'll see how that plays out. Osceola wins last
night first game of the G League Finals. Don't know
when the team takes off for Stockton, but could mac mcclunk.
(18:15):
Could Ethan Thompson be available here tonight as well, could
be an opportunity for them. The game is on Friday
in California. I imagine they leave tomorrow, so maybe he plays.
But congrats to them. They win the first game they win,
won more their.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
G League champions. So we'll find out.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
We be game time decisions who's going to be and
who's out for the Boston Celtics. But Jake, I got
to go around the association. The news broke yesterday afternoon
that Michael Malone is out as head coach of the
Denver Nuggets. Asked KCP about it, he said nothing surprises
you in the NBA because you just never know, and
he thought it was unfortunate. He loves Michael Malone, the
part of a championship team and Michael Malone ten years
(18:52):
with the Denver Nuggets NBA champions a couple of years ago,
four hundred and seventy one wins. He coached seven hundred
and ninety eight games, four hundred and seventy one wins.
It was shocking. It was stunning. I don't understand it myself,
but I don't work there. I'm not part of the organization.
There were a lot of injuries, they had people in
and out, and you're just two years removed from an
NBA championship. That one made less sense to me than
(19:14):
any firing, and especially the timing of it.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
How did that hit you, Jake?
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Strangely, there was I gues there was a press conference
the other day where he said something about the players
watching film or not watching film. Yes, and that some
people are pointing to is maybe kind of the break point.
We know Mike Malone's a grinder. Uh, he's a greater,
and so I'm sure there.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Was a straight shooter.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
He's a straight shooter. I'm sure there were there was
some tension there. There's reports about his relationship with Kelvin Boot,
the GM who also they said, okay, your contract's up,
why don't you just not come back? So who knows?
You lose four games? I find hard to believe they
lost four games in a row and they said, okay,
we got it, we got a clean house. I'm sure
there's a whole bunch of underlying stuff. Yes, we don't
(19:57):
want to get into. The bottom line is the you know,
the leagues in such a great place as far as
parody goes. Last six years, we've had six different champions.
Only two of those head coaches still have their jobs.
And one of them is Steve Kerr, who won you know,
three rings before that, and one of them is Joe Mizzoula,
who is the raging head coach of the NBA champions.
Vogel coach, Bud, you know, Mike Malone, the nurse going
(20:20):
back to Toronto. It's you know, you win that ring
and then about it. It's like Richie used to always say,
don't win Coach of the Year because now don't even
win a championship because a year and a half winter.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
On your way. Absolutely unbelievable. Will you win it?
Speaker 2 (20:33):
You go all in to win a championship, and what
usually happens is you can't keep that roster together.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
That's a great question. That's exactly so you're not trying.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
You can't fire everybody, so you fire the coach.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
To fire the coach, and then you rebuild, and here
you are, You're stuck going through it. Okay, real quick,
In about thirty seconds, Luka Doncic makes his return to
Dallas here tonight. That's going to be an unbelievable scene.
I know he's going to be emotional. Already emotional. It
started last night getting thrown out of that basketball game.
Uh last night, I believe again it's ok se so
he gets thrown out of that one. But your thoughts
about Luca going back Anthony Davis playing his former team,
(21:05):
but that that's going to be pretty special and he's
going to get one heck of a resounding standing ovation.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
Well, it looks like Phoenix says has entirely punted. I
didn't see if they are they officially really eliminated because
Dallas Dallas is going to make the play in tournament,
so at the very least they are, I like the
idea for Mavericks fans if this game means something that
if you're a Mavericks fan, yeah, you want to see
Luca play well, obviously, but you want to win this
game and and maybe you're starting to latch it. When
(21:33):
all is said and done, we can we can talk
about Nico Harrison and all of this. I feel for
Mavericks fans, and so I'm sort of hoping the franchise
actually does well, just because I don't want Mavericks fans
to just quit on basketball. Nobody deserves that. And so
so I think I'm I'm a sneaky Mavericks fan the
rest of the season, but obviously will be very, very
emotional with that return. It'll be something to keep an
(21:55):
eye on for sure.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Mavericks have not clinched a play in spot yet. Sacramento
did last night and Dallas is still alive. Phoenix has
punted on the season, whether they're mathematically eliminated or not.
They've lost seven in a row, so they have officially
punted on the season.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
