In this conversation, Minnesota Tim discusses the Minnesota Vikings' impressive start to the season with a 5-0 record, while cautioning that historical precedents show that such starts do not guarantee playoff success. He reflects on past seasons, particularly 2016, where the Vikings also started strong but ultimately missed the playoffs. Tim emphasizes the need for the team to continue winning and the potential pitfalls they face if they do not maintain their performance.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
The Minnesota Vikings have started their season five and oh
and out of their bye week they've faced the smoking
hot Detroit Lions after they clobbered Mike Zimmer's defense what forty.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Seven to nine I think the score was.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
I wonder if the problem is the players or Mike Zimmer.
I under who if he's going to deflect the blame
once again and put the onus on his players, or
if he's gonna take some of the blame this time.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
It will be.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Interesting to watch that he seemed he seemed kind of
quiet recently that Mike Zimmer has and I am here
to tell you that despite the Minnesota Vikings five and
oh start, the team has proven nothing yet. And if
they continue winning and they win a playoff game, well

(01:02):
maybe they proved a little something something. But the Minnesota
Vikings have started five and oh before, and it doesn't
always lead to a playoff berth. You would think that
mathematically it would the chances of making the playoffs after

(01:23):
starting five and oh are good, but they did it
in twenty sixteen. In twenty sixteen, they beat the Titans
on the road to start one and oh, and then
the second week they beat Green Bay third week at
Carolina they won. Fourth week versus New York at home

(01:46):
they win, and the fifth week versus Houston at home
they win. And these are pretty decisive victories too. You
look at Week five versus Houston, they won thirty one thirteen,
versus New York FO ten at Carolina twenty two to ten,
Week one against the Titans twenty five to sixteen, and

(02:08):
Week two against the Packers seventeen to fourteen.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
That was the only one score game. And looking at.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
The Minnesota Vikings season thus far, there's been a lot
of blowouts. They beat the Texans thirty four to seven.
They didn't blow out the Niners, but they practically won
by two scores. They were up twenty three to fourteen
with like a minute or two left. Against the Rainbay Packers,

(02:39):
they're up twenty eight to zero. It got cut to
one score lead twenty eight to twenty two, but then
we went up thirty one to twenty two at the
end of the game, so that was decisive in the
final few minutes. Against the Jets is a close game.
Giants Vikings dominated them twenty eight six, and then the

(02:59):
Minnesooda Vikings entered there bye week oh they're.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Gonna come out fresh and hot and ready to rumble.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Lost loss loss loss win lost loss win lost loss win. So,
even though the Minnesota Vikings schedule lightens up a ton,
there is no guarantee that they're gonna make the playoffs
just because they started.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Five and oh.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
And there was this video by a creator that I
saw online that I need to recognize strictly. Lighton is
their YouTube channel, and he posted a video of the
last time the Minnesota Vikings went to five and oh.
So I just want you to enjoy and listen carefully

(03:44):
to the names.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Did you know the last time the Vikings were five
and oh they actually missed the playoffs. Well, let's take
a look back at my least favorite game from that season.
This is Vikings versus Lions from twenty sixteen. Forgotten running
back Theo Riddicks set up the steroid using Matt Prater
for the first points of the game, and on the
Vikings first play of the game, Sam Bradford completed a
pass to Sam Bradford and the ever so clutch Blair

(04:08):
Walsh tied it up. Stafford bounced back, finding am Kwan
Bolden for the score and to be honest with you,
I had no idea that was a thing. Matt Osciata
pitched this one to Diggs, which let the Diva get
loose for a nice gain, and this set up a
Kyle Rudolph touchdown. Ronnie Hillman ripped off this game on
the swing pass, but Asciata got stuffed on fourth and inches.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Man, what a running back room that was.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
And Rhet Ellison scored on this end round. This offense
was filled with MPCs, and on the first drive of overtime,
Golden Tate was somehow able to shimmy prime Xavier Roads
and Harrison Smith to score the game winner. Now that's
a classic Vikings loss.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Did you recognize some of those names? Some names they
didn't even say, like Andrewson Dajo. I saw him in
the background, Cord Daryl Patterson, He is in the background.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
In what world do you do? End around to Rhet Ellison?
I guess the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Did Sam Bradford quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings?

Speaker 2 (05:10):
You Devian.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
I don't know what his statistics were that season or
the first five weeks of the season, but it is
kind of a similar story to.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Sam.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
To Sam Darnold looks like Shawn Hill played that what
Seawan Hill played the opening game against the Tennessee Titans
in twenty sixteen. Some of these things are just like
mind blowing, wow, oh my goodness this matter. Is this

(05:48):
the year Adrian Pearson got hurt or suspended or something.
Sam Bradford, who played Week two against the Packers, he
all dueled Aaron Rodgers twenty two for thirty one two
and eighty six yards, two touchdowns, zero picks, sounds very
Sam donald Y esque. Let's take a look at Week
three Sam Bradford's performance against the Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
What did he do in this one? Sam Donald?

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Sam Sam Bradford eighteen for twenty eight one hundred and
seventy one yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions. That sounds very
Sam donald y esque. This season versus New York Week four,
Sam Bradford, what do you do? Twenty six for thirty

(06:33):
six two hundred and sixty two yards, one touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Zero picks.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
This is very similar to what Sam Donald is doing
this season, and oddly enough, both of their names are Sam.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Week five against the Texans, they get to five and zero.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Sam Bradford again, twenty two for thirty two hundred and
seventy one yards, two touchdowns, zero pick. As fun as
this Minnesota Viking season has been, and I'm not being
a negative fan, I'm just letting you know.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
I'm giving you a warning. They have not proven anything yet.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
This could flip so quickly on its head because Sam
Donald can still do what Sam Donald has done to
the first five six years of his career, and he
could go quickly into a really, really really bad place

(07:35):
offensively for the Minnesota Vikings coming out of the bye
week and twenty sixteen different coaches, different players, I get it,
but the storyline is similar. Quarterback that's trying to resurrect
his career and give a little something something to a
team that needs it. The Vikings scored ten points against
the Eagles, ten points against the Bears, sixteen points against Detroit.

(07:58):
The scoring tanked. And this team didn't have Justin Jefferson,
didn't have Addison and of Hawkinson come back, didn't have
Aaron Jones, but that Jared McKinnon, that Adrian Peterson for
a fierce few games of the season until he got suspended.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Or hurt or something like that.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
I don't remember what happened, but the Minnesota Vikings have
started five and oh before and have missed the playoffs,
and oddly enough, both quarterbacks were named Sam. They had
their bye week in Week six in both seasons. Hopefully

(08:39):
that's not a sign of things to come, but right
now the Minnesota Vikings have not proven a thing despite
their five and oh record. You've got to continue to
win or the finger will be pointed so quickly at
Darnold at O'Connell for blowing up a five in O

(09:01):
season
