Speaker 1 (00:06):
There have been a lot of discussion this week after
the Minnesota Vikings advance to ten and two and ahead
of one of the most anticipated games of the year
where Kirk Cousins faces his former team, the Minnesota Vikings
this weekend, and national pundits are weighing in on Sam
(00:30):
Donald versus Kirk Cousins. And I'm going to dive into
that real shortly, but I got a little different thing
up my sleeve right now because I watch the Minnesota
Wild third intermission, the final few minutes, and I watched
the overtime game. And I'm an employee of the Minnesota Wild.
I work for their radio network, so I do games
(00:53):
every so often. I don't do every game, but I
do games about once or twice a week or every
other week, depending on how that week looks.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
And this is my fiery hot take.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
And I sent this to a hockey guy who plays hockey,
who's done hockey's entire life, and I knew my response
would be what it was the hockey guy and this
is before I'll tell you what he says. He says,
I do understand where you're coming from, However, playing hockey
my whole life. Five on five is the way. There's
(01:28):
so much of the game that would be missed. I
do love the three on three overtime though, that's for sure.
And my hot take is that hockey and the first, second,
and third intermission should eliminate five on five and just play.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Three on three.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
The entertainment, the product, the amount of plays that are
made in three on three hockey are much more overwhelming
than five on five hockey, and there's more scoring, there's
less whistles for offsides and icing. Hockey should always be
(02:12):
played three on three. Everyone is always excited to watch
three on three overtime hockey, and there's more just highlight
in three on three hockey.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Now I get it. Hockey five on five it's the way.
It's the way.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
It's always bad, it's the way it should always be.
I lose so much of the game. But if you
want to advance as a league or as a game
ahead of baseball or basketball, you're never gonna advance past
football and sports that most people enjoy or love.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Moving to three.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
On three is the answer because you think about what
the NFL has done. The NFL has made their product
a more offensive league. Hits are illegal. You can only
hit the quarterback in a certain spot. It's a part
of the game. Oh no, you gotta be careful. You
can't hit the quarterback to high. You can't and I'm
too low. You can't drive him to the ground the
(03:19):
way you used to. It was a part of the game.
It used to be the way it was played. But
now the quarterback drives the entertainment. So they did what
they needed to do to protect that quarterback at all cots.
And I think hockey should do a similar thing. You know,
I could keep fighting involved, you can keep hitting involved,
(03:40):
but man three on three hockey is entertaining highlights, scoring movement, smoothness,
less whistles.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
It's fast. And that is my take on hockey for
the day.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
But this is a Minnesota Vikings podcast and we will
talk about the Minnesota Vikings. I talked earlier that national
pundits are weighing in on Sam Donald versus Kirk Cousins,
and Colin Coward chooses Sam Donald over Kirk Cousins. Sam Darnald,
(04:18):
who in the last three games is three and zero,
one hundred and twelve passer rating, six touchdowns, no picks.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Sam Darnald to me, if I was a team and
you said Kirk Cousins, Sam Donald not even factoring in money.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Oh god, Donald.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
And then when you factor in one guy is making
forty million dollars and you're like, Sam, is he getting that?
But even if he did, if all money's equal, I
will take Sam Donald every day of the week.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
And again, look who likes him. I loved him.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
They didn't want to lose them. They just they couldn't
compete with a ten million dollar what Minnesota gave him.
And look what he's done. And I stand by Minnesota's
got really good coaching.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
So that's Colin Coward and his co host John Middlecalf,
and they're part of the volume on iHeart Radio. Hey,
this podcast is on Iheigh Radio. So me and Colin Cowder,
you know, basically the same guy. And he shares that
he would rather have Sam Darnald over Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
And he's right.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Sam Darnald is out playing Kirk Cousins and it's not
even close. Donald twenty three touchdowns, ten picks, Kirk Cousins
seventeen touchdowns, thirteen picks. And I've been talking about this recently,
but another thought came into my mind this morning that
I hadn't addressed yet. We haven't even considered the division
(05:40):
these two quarterbacks are playing in. Kirk Cousins arguably plays
in the worst division in football. The Falcons are six
and six. They're tied for first place with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, and they hold that tiebreaker because they beat
the Buccaneers twice. But you look at who the Falcons
(06:03):
have beaten and who the Falcons have lost to this season.
They lost to Pittsburgh, they lost to Kansas City, they
lost to Seattle and that they got blown out by Denver.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
They lost to the Chargers, and they lost to New Orleans.
And you look at their wins. They had a good win.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Against Philadelphia, they had decent wins against Tampa Bay, but
Tampa Bay divisional game beat them twice. They beat Carolina,
they beat the Saints, they lost of the Saints ones,
and then they beat the crummy Dallas Cowboys. So four
(06:42):
of their six wins this season have been against weak
divisional opponents. And then you think about what the Minnesota
Vikings have done this year. You know, the gauntlet that
they were supposed to face earlier on in the year.
That's not looking so gallant right now. Because the Niners
stink and the Houston Texans aren't as good as everyone
(07:04):
was anticipating them to be. Well, they beat the Giants.
They weren't favored to win that game. The Giants were
favored by one. You look at the San Francisco forty
nine ers, they weren't favorite to win that game. Houston
Texas Vikings weren't favored to win that game. Green Bay
Packers Vikings weren't favored to win that game. I think
the first game of the year the Vikings were favored
(07:24):
to win was against the New York Jets in Week
five in London. So Vikings started off five to zero
against good quality opponents. They lose to Detroit, loose to
the Rams, but they bounced back against the Indianapolis Colts.
They beat the krummy Jacksonville Jaguars, beat the krummy Tennessee Titans.
(07:45):
But then they were good wins at Chicago, even though
Chicago's a mess, there are a competitive mess. They almost
beat the Lions. They beat the Arizona Cardinals, who are
vying for a playoffs, but against these Seattle Seahawks and
come back fashion.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
So it's not like Sam Donald is doing.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
This versus a Carolina, versus the Saints, even versus the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is doing this against good quality
NFL opponents, and the Minnesota Vikings right now are two
and one in the NFC North. Be the Packers on
the road, beat the Bears on the road, lost to
(08:21):
the Lions at home, and I would bet that the
Vikings won't finish five and one in the division. They
won't beat the Bears at home, Packers at home, and
the Lions on the road. But I think it's fair
to expect three and three in the division or a
four and two in the division.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I don't know if we'll be the Packers at home.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
I don't know if we'll beat the Lions on the road,
but I bet we beat the Bears. I bet we
at least win one of those games. So finishing five
hundred and a challenging NFC North, the best division in football,
without question, is a good thing and something that we
(09:04):
haven't even factored in yet when we're comparing what Sam
Donald has done in Minnesota versus what Kirk Cousins has
done with the Atlanta Falcons. So it's Sam Donald all day,
every day as of right now, And another thing to
consider is just how much Sam Donald can move in
(09:27):
the pocket and his escapability in the pocket. The guy
is way more athletic than people want to give him
credit for. And of course he's white, so he's sneaky fast.
White quarterbacks are always sneaky fast. They're never just fast,
they're sneaky fast, and Sam Donald falls under that sneaky
fast category. Sam Donald, when he gets hit, he doesn't
(09:52):
necessarily fall.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Down right away.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
He can fight off defensive end, defensive tackles and scramble
for yardage. And I think that is something that we
haven't really recognized as much because as soon as you
touch kirk Cousins, he's like Tom Brady in the backfield.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
He touched him and he goes down.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Kirk Cousins doesn't really elude fight off tacklers, doesn't do it.
Sam Darnald this year for the Minnesota Vikings fifty two
attempts one hundred and eighty seven yards. That's one hundred
and eighty seven yards that Kirk Cousins wouldn't give you.
I mean, just for comparison's sake, let's look up kirk
Cousins's rushing numbers on the Minnesota Vikings in his history
(10:40):
with the team, because I would assume that they're not
as high as what Sam Donald has delivered.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Okay Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
His last full season with the Vikings twenty twenty two,
the amount of rushing attempts scrambles thirty one one for
ninety seven in twenty twenty two. The year before that,
in twenty twenty one, twenty nine for one hundred and fifteen.
The Minnesota Vikings still have six games left to play,
(11:13):
and Sam Donald already has fifty two carries for one
hundred and eighty seven yards. And this isn't some fabrication.
In twenty twenty two he ran for one hundred and
six yards. In twenty twenty one, he ran for two
hundred and twenty two yards. In twenty twenty two hundred
and seventeen yards. Sam Donald can move in the pocket
(11:35):
and can make plays with his feet. I think the
knock on Sam Donald is that sometimes he doesn't use
his feet enough. Sometimes he'll have a wide open, clear
pocket in front of him and the Viking's eighty yard
on third down, and he'll try to fit a tight
ball into Jefferson or assies take the free yardage.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
It's right there, and you're quick enough to do it.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
So just better arm talent, better maneuverability, if that's even
a word, and just right now, a better overall player
than Kirk Cousins and Colin Coward recognizes it, and it
seems like everybody else is starting to recognize it as well.
(12:20):
A couple of other news and notes for the Minnesota
Vikings that I think need to be.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Addressed this morning.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
The long snapper the Minnesota Vikings signed to replace Andrew
d Piola for a few weeks when he went on
IR is back. Andrew Dipiola is back, I should say,
because the Minnesota Vikings waived that long snapper, and they
also have activated Will Richard's twenty.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
One day practice window.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
He's not activated on the active roster yet, but they
have opened up his twenty one day practice window, which
means the end of John Parker Romo will be happening.
So Une on the Minnesota Vikings and John Parker Romo,
we just want to say thank you for a good
several weeks for delivering and we appreciate it. Take your
(13:13):
game ball, go somewhere else and please miss a ton
of kicks there. We appreciated your time in Minnesota. Take
your game ball, put it on your mantle, and put
it wherever you're gonna put it. Tell your grandkids about it.
But go to Baltimore replaced Justin Tucker, and please miss
a bunch of a bunch of kicks, though that would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Isn't it funny?
(13:35):
And bring him in kicks? Well, hey see you and
Missile Vikings did do a favorite to John Parker Romo.
They give him an NFL career outside of Minnesota because
there's gonna be another team that signs him because of
what he did for the Minnesota Vikings. He played well,
He missed like one kick and one extra point in
(13:57):
four weeks, had all their field goals and points against
the Jacksonville Jaguars, made a fifty five yarder last week
that looked like it could have been good from sixty plus.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
So John Parker Romo proved that he.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Belongs on some team in the NFL and has deserved
a second chance. And he can thank the Minnesota Vikings
for giving him that chance.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
And credit to the Vikings for bringing.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Him back because they had him in training camp, picked
a little right Schard of course over him, because that's
the easy decision and right decision. But he'll be somewhere
else on an NFL roster either the rest of this
season when the Vikings cut him or next offseason when
teams are looking to replace old, washed up kickers. So
(14:47):
congrats to John Parker Romo for getting an opportunity in
the NFL and also delivering when he got that opportunity,
because a lot of guys would fall short in that situation. Actually,
when you're asked to come in and knock down every
single point for your team to.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Beat the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
So good for him, but hopefully he misses a bunch
of kicks for the Bears or Packers or Lions.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Moving forward, all right, thank you.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
