Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome into the show today. Thank you for making this
podcast a part of your day. There's an amazing weekend.
I'm a part time youth pastor at our local Transformed
church in and Over, Minnesota, and we went on a
retreat this past weekend up to arc in Osciola, Wisconsin,
(00:28):
and the Holy Spirit was moving and it was an
amazing weekend where youth from ages six to twelfth grade
drew closer to Jesus and I did too. So I
just wanted to provide some encouragement on this show of
middle school and high school students drawing closer to Jesus,
(00:51):
our Lord and Savior. But let's talk about the Minnesota Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings enter the off season with some interesting
decisions ahead. Will they tag and trade Sam Darnold, Are
they going to resign Daniel Jones? What are they going
(01:11):
to do defensively? What are they going to do in
the draft? What are they gonna do with Aaron Jones.
There's a lot of questions and a lot of different
directions the Minnesota Vikings could go this offseason. And one
of the latest speculative ideas, and it's all speculation, is
(01:32):
Matthew Stafford possibly reuniting with Kevin O'Connell and the Minnesota
Vikings this offseason. There was already speculation last year that
the Vikings could potentially trade for Matthew Stafford. And this
is when the Rams were struggling there like one in
four Cooper Kupp, Pokin Nakua were injured and then they
(01:57):
came back against the Vikings. They finished off season going
on like an eight and to run. They finished the
year ten and six, beat the Vikings in the playoffs
and are actually the Philadelphia Eagles' most competitive matchup and
all the playoffs, Eagles blew out the Commanders, they blew
out the Chiefs, and it was a competitive matchup with
(02:20):
the Los Angeles Rams.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
The Rams were one or two throws away from winning
that game.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
And now the question becomes with Matthew Stafford's wife making
public comments, the Los Angeles Rams seem to be exploring
the market and want Matthew Stafford gone.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Does that mean they're gonna bring in Aaron Rodgers?
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Does that mean that they're interested in the sign and
trade with Sam Darnold. On the surface, it seems like
Matthew Stafford to the Vikings should not.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Be a good idea.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
When you explore Matthew Stafford's contract situation, this is what
it says. Matthew Stafford in twenty twenty five has a
forty nine million dollar cap hit as eighteen percent of
the league cap. So that kind of destroys a ton
of the Minnesota Vikings cap space that they worked so
(03:20):
hard to create this offseason.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And then in two thousand.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Twenty six, Matthew Stafford has a cap hit of fifty
three million dollars, which is eighteen percent of the league cap. However,
if you release Matthew Stafford, it's only twenty two million
of dead cap after his first season if the Vikings
(03:53):
were to trade for him. So there's a lot of
risk in trading for Matthew Stafford. However, the guy is
a bonafide super Bowl quarterback that can still compete at
the highest level, a guy that knows Kevin o'connells system
(04:17):
backwards and forwards. And then you put them in a
place like Minnesota where you've got the best wide receiver
duo in the league, a TJ. Hawkinson, a running back
that you might draft this year, and it probably keeps
(04:38):
Matthew Stafford spark of trying to win another Super Bowl alive. Now,
the problem with all of these situations and with the
trade for Matthew Stafford, is that it is a big
risk because maybe mentally it makes the Minnesota Vikings a
(04:59):
super Bowl contender, but there's no guarantee that the Vikings
are a super Bowl contender if they do trade for
Matthew Stafford. Now, psychologically what they go. If they trade
for Matthew Staffordy're automatically super Bowl contenders. That's not the case.
Nothing is the case in the NFL. Nothing's a guarantee.
You get trade for Matthew Stafford and he's injured all
(05:21):
season long with a shoulder injury. But if you do
trade for Matthew Stafford, it does give you a better
chance to win a super Bowl next season than if
you don't. And I am all for the idea of
trading for Stafford.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I think it's good for the development of J. J.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
McCarthy, and I do think it gives the Vikings the
best chance to win the Super Bowl next season. And
the question that I think you need to ask is
how much is a super Bowl worth to you and
(06:05):
your family and the Minnesota Vikings fan base, Because if
you trade for Matthew Stafford, it immediately puts the Minnesota
Vikings in a super Bowl mindset. And if you don't,
the Vikings super Bowl mindset is still two to three
years away. And if you don't, the Minnesota Vikings are
(06:29):
still in a complete guessing game with Jajon McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
McCarthy is not a sure thing.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Let's quit pretending like McCarthy has proven himself as an
elite NFL quarterback that can step in and fill the
shoes of Sam Donald. Immediately we think he can be
a solid starter in the league. Has McCarthy done anything
to prove that he can be a top ten quarterback
in the league that can take the Vikings from where
(06:58):
they were last year two in two years being a
super Bowl contender. There's no guarantee of that. So you know,
you play the guarantee non guarantee game with Matthew Stafford
on whether the Vikings are super Bowl contenders. You could
do the same thing with McCarthy. There's no guarantee that
he's going to be an elite NFL quarterback. And here's
(07:21):
the other thing with Matthew Stafford. You can cut him
after a year and it's only a twenty two million
dollar cap hit dead cap hit the following season, so
it can be a one year rental for the guy.
Plus Stafford's got an arm and he is a very very,
(07:45):
very very good quarterback. Still, So as controversial as it
might seem, I want the Minnesota Vikings to trade for
Matthew Stafford and make him QB one going into next season,
and there's still some money that you can spend on
(08:06):
other guys. The Vikings have about sixty one sixty two
million dollars in cap space. Say trade for Stafford, you
still got twelve to thirteen million dollars in cabs space.
And that's without cutting at Ingram that creates more cab space.
And the Minnesota Vikings here's what one thing that they're
really good at. The Vikings are one of the best
(08:26):
teams in the league and finding guys that aren't necessarily
top of the money guys, but very good playmakers. Look
no further than last season Andrew van Ginklo, Jonathan Grenard,
Shaq Griffin, Stefan Gilmour, Blake Cashman. That's five guys that
(08:48):
are named right there that were not top echelon free
agents that the Minnesota Vikings picked up and had massive
impacts on their fourteen to three regular season. The Viking
can do that again, and if they'd trade for Matthew Stafford,
it automatically puts in that locker room a super Bowl mindset.
(09:11):
Oh and you also have the years of j J
and McCarthy ahead of you. It's not like McCarthy's a
twenty five year old rookie that we have to worry
about aging out. It's not like he's a Brandon Whedon
coming out of Oklahoma State.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
McCarthy is twenty two years old.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
If he says out one more year, he's twenty three,
and he's still got fifteen years left of his NFL career.
If he shapes up to be a good quarterback in
the league, the Minnesota Vikings right now are the favorites
to land McCarthy, to land Stafford if the Los Angeles
(09:53):
Rams do indeed.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Trade him or release him.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Look at this report from Yahoo Sports via Tom Pellisaro.
So I guess they just tweeted it and said PERP
Tom Palliser, so I guess it's an NFL Network report.
The Rams have given Matthew Stafford's agent permission to speak
to other teams.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
The Rams do.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Not want Stafford, and the Rams probably want Sam Darnold,
so a sign in trade makes all the sense in
this scenario. And I think it makes a ton of
sense for the Vikings to explore trading for an elite
level quarterback in Matthew Stafford, because what's the rush with McCarthy?
(10:39):
Why rush it? Why rush it? Why can't he wait
one more year?
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Now?
Speaker 1 (10:46):
We have a tendency to push for things so quickly,
so right away we can just take a step back,
take a breath, and wait. I push back against instant gratification,
and you should too. Our instant gratification wants to see
JJ McCarthy as QB one, as a twenty two year old,
(11:06):
first year starting quarterback next season. That's what I want,
That's what you want. But what's best for the Vikings.
What's best for the Vikings is trading for Matthew Stafford
and making him QB one and putting the Minnesota Vikings
in a super Bowl window immediately.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
That's a one year super Bowl window. You get rid of.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Them, you're still have JAJ McCarthy at a ton of
cap space. I think it's the play, and I do
believe that it's a discussion within the Vikings organization. I
don't think it is going to happen because the Vikings
value cap space and want that very very badly to
(11:52):
surround a team with McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
But I do.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Think it's a discussion. Thank you for watching this episode,
for making this podcast. For every day that subscribe button,
all glory to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Appreciate
you all, and thank you for making this podcast a
part of your day.
