Speaker 1 (00:07):
I am running hot today because I am very passionate
about the subject that we are tackling today. And the
subject we are tackling today revolves around the Timberwolves Carl
Anthony Towns trade, which received Julius Randall and Dante di Vincenzo.
(00:29):
And the reason why I'm hot is because people a
year later still do not understand the large idea behind
the trade. So we're gonna talk about that. We're going
to revisit it. But first I need to tell you

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Okay, so let's revisit this Carl Anthony Towns.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Trade which got Minnesota back Julius Randall and Dante DiVincenzo
and a future first round pick from Detroit.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
One. The trade got back.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
The Timberwolves death Okay, very good, and we've seen that
depth play out in the playoffs. Dante Divencezzo coming off
the bench giving the Timberwolves rotation, valuable minutes and for
the most part is finishing games. That's huge, especially because
Mike Conley is undersized when he's trying to guard guys
(03:03):
like Austin Reeves. The only reason why Mike Conley was
in the game against the Lakers at the end is
because Jaden McDaniels filed out, and it just so happened
to work out perfectly because then Mike Conley hit the
game clinching three point shot in the corner. But Dante
DiVincenzo adds valuable minutes off the bench.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Julius Randall, the dude is.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Built for the playoffs because you watch some of the
physicality that he is bringing in these playoffs, and none
of the things that he was doing versus the Lakers
is allowed in the regular season. They would have called
offensive files, they would have called defensive files. And Randall
(03:48):
is built. The dude is like a rock. You can't
you can't move the guy. And the Timberwolves got out
of the first round last year, they made it to
the Western Conference Finals, and now it appears that they
will face the Warriors in the second round to get
to the Western Conference Finals.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
So maybe the Timberwolves will.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Get to the exact same spot that they did last year,
and that would be a win win, And as far
as the Knicks go right now, it is a win because.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Karl Anthony Towns carried the Knicks in the Game four
win over.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
The Pistons, hitting fadeaways, hitting long distance threes. He was
sensational in that series. But this trade was all about
the big picture. It was not about the right now.
It's not even about this upcoming season, although it looks
(04:51):
like Minnesota has a great chance to duplicate the same
success that they had in prior years.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
This trade was all about.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Twenty twenty seven, twenty twenty eight, when Carl Anthony Towns
has a cap hit of sixty one million dollars, which
is going to eat up roughly thirty two zero point
six percent of the cap.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
And here's the problem with that.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Carlinanthinny Towns is no longer twenty eight years old.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
He is going to be thirty two years old.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
At that point, eating up sixty one million dollars of
the NBA cap.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
And that's a problem.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
And that's why the Timberwolves made this trade. Randall was
phenomenal versus the Lakers. Donte DiVincenzo had his moments, both
good and bad versus the Lakers, But this trade wasn't
even about the twenty twenty four twenty twenty five season.
(06:03):
This trade was about the twenty twenty seven twenty twenty
eight season, when Edwards is going to be in his
prime on the.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Timberwolves roster, and the Timberwolves.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Are going to try to do their best to put
the best team around Edwards. And when Carl Anthony Towns
is eating up sixty one million dollars of your cap
space and Anthony Edwards is eating up a bunch of
cap space yourself because he's a superstar in the NBA,
well then you have a problem. So for so long
(06:41):
this season, everyone called it a bad trade, a terrible trade.
Why did we get rid of Karl Anthony Towns when
the team struggled to jail and had struggled to come
together throughout the season. But it was never about this season.
It was all about how you're going to prepare the
timber roster to win games when Anthony Edwards is ready
(07:05):
to go to that NEGA superstar level, when he is
the face of the league, when he has an opportunity
to win MVPs, because you ain't doing that when Edwards
is eating up forty percent of your calvspace and Karl
Anthony Townsends is eating up thirty two percent of your calvspace.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
That's a problem.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
And that's what Tim Connelly recognized from the Minnesota Timberwolves
is that how are we gonna build a roster.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Around Edwards in three or four years when.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
We've got a thirty two year old out of his
prime jacking up three he is eating up sixty one
million dollars of our cass space. It's impossible. And that's
why the trade was done. And it looks like it's
a win win for both teams this season, but long term,
it's a win for the Timberwolves. So the Timberwolves flat
(08:02):
out won this trade because they gave them flexibility moving
forward and who they can sign and who they can
trade for. So really, the New York Knicks have a
small window with Carl Anthony Towns because they need to
win this season and next season, because after that, Carl
(08:27):
Anthony Towns is entering out the door of his prime
window in the NBA. Sure he will still be able
to make threes and he can still make some shots,
but as far as his effectiveness, it is not going
to be as strong as it is at twenty eight
years old. So the pressure is now for the next
(08:49):
Whereas the Timberwolves continue to win without Towns and have
that flexibility moving forward as their peak player Anthony Edwards
enters his prime. It was a win win, win, win win,
and that's why I'm passionate about it because people never
understood the big idea behind the trade. It was always
(09:10):
about Towns and the contract cap hit that he had
on the Timberwolves organization in two thousand, twenty seven, two
thousand and twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
That's what it was.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
The Minnesota Wild lost their series against the Vegas Golden
Knights on Thursday night, and you can blame me. I
work for the radio production team for the Wild. I'm
a few people that do the same job, so I
don't do every game. But I did game one, I
did Game four, and I did Game six, and the
(09:49):
Minnesota Wild lost Game one, Game four, and Game six.
So before I even talk about the game, I must
apologize because of uh my part in the Wild losing
their series against Vegas. With that being said, there's a
(10:11):
couple of things that I want to touch on in
that game. Earlier in the game, they called kill Real
Caprizov for a tripping penalty at the end of the game.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
I am a very.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Officionado of officials. I defend them, I give them a break,
but when there appears to be a discrepancy in the
way that they are consistently calling the game, that's when
I jump and criticize, because if you call the game
away in the first or second period, and you call
(10:47):
that different in the third period, then I have a
problem because the officials set the expectation for how the
game is going to be called, and once that expectation
is set, Okay, I got you, Iridi, you I understand
what's being called when the Wild they're down by one.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
There were two instances where the.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Wild players got tripped by a Vegas Golden Knights player,
and because the official had this big fear of controlling
the outcome of the game, they did not raise their
hand and blow the whistle when the puck touched the
(11:28):
Golden Knights, which is a massive problem because when Careel
Caprizov got called for the tripping penalty, they had no
problem putting their mark on the game and giving the
Vegas Golden Knights a power play opportunity.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
They had no issue with that. Yeah, sure, yeah, it
was a tripping I'll call it. I'll put my mark
on the game.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
That's where officials go wrong, because a call in the
second or third period or first period has just as
much of a control or mark on the game as
it does in the third period, even if it's coming
down to the closing minutes of the game. If there's
a trip and it's similar to the trip in the
(12:18):
first or second period, you've got to raise your hand
and blow that whistle and give the Wild a fair
chance because they set the expectation. They said, I'm calling that.
We are making the decision to wave our hand and
call this tripping play tripping penalty because we called it earlier,
(12:41):
and the Wild loss. They could not score and tie
the game, although they had many opportunities at the end
of the game. And now there's season's over and they
have not advanced to the second round of the NHL
Playoffs since twenty fifteen, so it's been ten years time.
(13:02):
But now the Wild have an amazing opportunity because the
contracts that were holding them back Peisi and Suitor are
now off the books and they have money to spend. Sure,
they have to give Carel Caprizov an extension, but there
should still be enough money left over to give to
(13:25):
other players, because what the Wild are missing is another
top talent on their roster Careel can play.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
He's the thrill.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Eric Sneck is solid, he's the good tipper, He's a
scrappy guy near the net. But you need another guy
on the roster like Caprizov that can make plays happen.
Because as sensational as Matt Boldy was during the NHL playoffs,
(13:54):
he was great, he was not very good during the
regular season. He did not step up to the point
that everybody hoped he would when Caprizov missed fifty percent
of the season and Eric Sinak missed forty percent of
the season.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
So how much can.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
We really rely on Matt Boldy in taking that next
step next season when he had an amazing opportunity, a
tremendous opportunity to take the reins and say I am
going to control the Wild offense and I.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Am going to be a leading scorer in the.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
NHL because our top scorers are out, and he really
didn't show up.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
He was like Houdini, a disappearing act. And maybe it was.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Had something to do with the Wild's best players not
being available. I'm sure it did. Baldy's only twenty four
years old, so there's there's room to grow. But you
look at his season. He had twenty seven goals this year,
twenty nine last year, thirty one the year before, he
played all eighty two games, and the numbers were just
(15:07):
not there. The numbers that you would expect Matt Boldy
to put up in the absence of two top scorers
on the Wild just wasn't there. And he saw these
random droughts throughout the regular season from the Wild throughout
the regular season where it was just like, Baldy step
up and do something, make an impact on the game,
(15:30):
and he.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Just wasn't doing it.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Wild fans were waiting all season long for Boldy to
take the rein and say I'm gonna step up and
I'm gonna be the beast, and he really didn't until
the playoffs. But I just don't know if we can
fully trust that one series against the Vegas Golden Knights
(15:54):
is going to be enough to be like, Yeah, this
is the dude, He's gonna do this from now on.
But I just don't see it happening. Don't see it
happening at all. That's what the Wild need. They need
another top player on the offense. To help careel so
(16:14):
that he doesn't have.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
To try to do everything out there. And they need
a defensive guy too. Brock favors solid.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Hopefully that Beaum is good pay nineteen years old, but
you need stronger defenseman.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
So that's my take in the wild.
