Speaker 1 (00:00):
Before we begin, a quick note, I'm recording this on
Monday August. After twenty years of war. Kabbal and Afghanistan
fell to the Taliban yesterday again. At this very moment,
thousands of Afghans are crowded into Kabbal International Airport, desperately
trying to escape. Two hours ago, I saw disturbing video
(00:22):
that immediately reminded me of Nine eleven. People falling from
the sky, People clinging to the landing gear of American
planes trying to escape, little specs falling against a bright
blue backdrop. I've tried to avoid geopolitics on this show.
Nine eleven is just as much a human story. It
still is. And Afghans so desperate to escape they fall
(00:44):
from the sky is no different than an American on
nine eleven so desperate to escape they too fell from
a pie. Except this could have been avoided. There will
be time, endless time for politics. Not now. There is
an ongoing and building humanitarian catastrophe. Literally as I record this,
we America have a responsibility to rescue the tens of
(01:06):
thousands of Afghans who helped us during the past twenty
years and their families. The women activists and l g
B t Q, people and journalists who feel dire fear today.
We cannot abandon them. This is a podcast. We're not
going to change the world, but I know we have
heavy listenership in d C and even some listeners in Afghanistan.
(01:27):
Afghanistan has fallen, but we cannot abandon the men and
women who helped us, their families, the thousands of refugees
at the airport right now. We are not al Qaeda.
We should not be responsible for such chaos and desperation
that people are falling from the sky today. From my
(01:50):
Heart Radio, this is Missing on nine eleven, the story
of one woman who vanished on the eve of history
and my quest to find her. I'm your host, John Zack,
(02:28):
So today a unique and unusual episode We've obtained and
will air for the first time FBI audio recorded at
the World Trade Center on nine eleven during the attacks.
It's the only uninterrupted recording of any kind to capture
both plane crashes. Snippets of it have aired before, but
never the entire thing. It would be easy for us
(02:50):
to cut it down two crashes and screams and cascading debris,
but I want to air everything. It's a piece of history,
the final hour of normalcy at the Trade Center and
then the attacks. How the audio came to be is
interesting in its own right. On nine eleven, around seven am,
two FBI agents and a New York City investigator met
(03:13):
with an informant named Stephen mcgardell near City Hall, not
far from the Trade Center. McCardell was a cooperating witness
and a corruption investigation. The agents wired him with a
recorder and separately a transmitter. You'll hear mcgardell walk to
the Trade Center, into the mall below the Trade Center.
You'll hear the murmurs of mundane life, the clock taking
(03:34):
to catastrophe. Six am. McCardell is in the Greenhouse cafe
inside the Marriott Hotel between the towers, on a bench
in the plaza. Just outside their backs to the north
tower are the three investigators, including FBI Special Agent Rodney Miller.
Boom stories. But I've felt the heat like right on
(03:57):
the back of my neck, as if it was right there.
So I can imagine the amount of flame and zee
that was going on within the building itself, that just
must have been in an intense fire ball that you
would fill it from such far away. Imagine heat on
your neck. Look up a skyscraper a quarter mile high
in the blue sky, A massive fireball metal and glass
(04:21):
rained down on you. It was a very close call.
Vividly one of the other agents that was running to
the overhang and like every time steps she ran like
a piece of debris with hit like right where a
foot picked up from the ground right. So it was
just kind of crazy how all that happened. Miller ran
(04:43):
into the north tower to a security desk. He called
his bosses at the FBI. He stayed in the lobby
only ten to twelve minutes, then charged up the stairs.
I get to the eighties six floor, and I'm a
man of faith, and I just stopped where I was,
and I clearly for the voice of God speak to me,
(05:05):
and he said, Rodney, there is no use going any
further up. It's time for you to leave and exit
the building and just take as many people with you.
And it was such a clear voice, because I even
remember stopping and turning to the voice, and it was clear,
and it gave me clearance starts. And so I go
(05:26):
back down to like the seventy ninth floor, I believe,
and right there I see one of the battalion fire
chiefs for the New York Fire Department, and I clearly say, hey, sir,
this is no use here. We have to get all
of our resources and personnel out of here immediately. And
as soon as I said that, the north towers started
(05:48):
to sway back and forth. I would say it was
almost a two ft sway inside the building. And I
believe that swaying was called by the collapse of the
south tower. So the south tower was hit second, but
collapsed first. So we felt the south tower collapsing, which
caused the north tower to sway back and forth. So
(06:09):
we hit the ground. We're laying on the ground because
the sway is so tremendous. And then at that point
the time far achieved, he totally agreed. He was like, right, yeah,
we're We're with you. And right then and there, all
the Fire Department personnel just started unhooking their gear, dumping
all their oxen and tanks, dumping all the heavy gear,
(06:30):
and we just started a race back towards the ground floor,
and whoever was still in the stairwell, we just just
kind of lifted them up, picked them up or carry
them and then departed the building. And one thing that
I vividly recall as I exit the building is this
everything is white from the collapse of the first building
(06:51):
and the dust, and I'm looking for my supervisor. I'm
looking for my fellow agents and personnel. But the scene
is totally quiet. It's serene, and everything is covered in white.
As my brain is trying to process what happened. Right then,
I'm like, my brain goes, oh, Rodney, watch your step
by the way, and I'm like, okay, why do I
(07:15):
need to watch my step because I was like, yeah,
I don't want to step on that human torso or
that head right there. So I don't know if you
can imagine that. Right, So I'm on the street. Everything's white,
everything's quiet, and then there's body parts strewn all over
the streets. So I walked further up the block. You know,
(07:37):
I'm trying to call into my supervisor to the command
on my radio. Everything is kind of blacked out. And
then three minutes after leaving the North Tower, you know,
I'm running to another overhang because the building I was
just in is started to collapse. Millard nearly died. The
(07:58):
fire department had called the ATBI office and said when's
the funeral for the I'm African American? When's the funeral
for the African American ABI agent? And they were like,
who are you talking about? He was like the guy
who told us to evacuate the building, because if he
didn't tell us to evacuate the building, many of us
(08:19):
would have died. So we wanted to celebrate or memorialize
his funeral. Was like, no, that that guy's Rodney Miller
and he's sitting right here. He survived, right And then
the FBI was in the dated with a lot of
letters from the folks that were in the staircase. You know,
thank you for that agent. You know, if it wasn't
for him, I would have made it out. Let me
(08:39):
ask you, so, when the plane hit and you were
in the plaza, did you see anyone laying injured in
the plaza? Did you see anyone who had been immediately
killed by debris in the plaza? And then also when
you were going down the stairs the last time, how
many people were left in the stairwells? Were they pretty empty?
It was pretty empty by that time. You just at
(09:00):
so there was no I didn't see anyone that was
because the plaza was pretty vacant, and it was fairly
hot that day, so it's really you know, not a
lot of people were launching around. Was just us out there,
so it was pretty vacant. You probably had the research
from what the angle the plane came in, but we
were out where the plane I guess came out the
blasts of the plane coming out, so we didn't see anything,
(09:23):
and it was very desolate at the particular place. And
then coming down the staircase was just kind of like
the stragglers, just you know, folks who were having trouble,
kind of exiting the building a timely matter, But we
grabbed all those folks and we exited the building. When
you went into the towers immediately after the first plane hit,
did you see any civilians running into the towers? So
(09:44):
the story that I'm looking at specifically is this case
of this woman who disappeared on September ten, two thousand
and one, and she was a doctor and her family
theorized that maybe she ran into the towers. Did you
see any civilians being called into the towers, any nurses,
there's anyone running in as as volunteers or is it
mostly just first of s wonders trying to sher people
(10:05):
out of the danger zone. Yeah. Al also is the cops,
por authority, police and hypt and far department kind of
rushing in. If there were civilians, there were probably more
outside at various Triads sites that were very close to
the building. This is separate, but one of the interesting
things that I learned over the years is that after
(10:25):
nine eleven, there was a disposable camera recovered at ground
zero with photos taken on the upper levels, and it
was developed by the FBI's explosives unit. Have you ever
heard of that? No, I never heard of that. And
then so with Stephen, when did you realize that you
had this tape that you captured the crashes on tape?
And how did the tapes are live? Right? So the
(10:48):
recording device itself is pretty uh robust, So it's not
like he handles the tape. It's a device that we
give them and then that device has to be given
back to us and then take and to be downloaded.
So it's not a tape. It's more of a digital
device that has to be downloaded. It's funny. It wasn't
until weeks after that I was able to reconnect with
(11:12):
Steven McCardell, because we didn't know if he had survived himself,
but he did check in and said like he was okay.
And then it just took weeks because I was assigned
doing SWAT stuff. I was temporary assigned to the Joint
Terrorism Task Force, So it took a while for us
to kind of just reconnect and restart because, as you know,
(11:33):
everybody was working terrorism and all these cases that we
worked were kind of put to bed. So it was
until we linked up further on down the road. I
got the device back, I got it downloaded. This was
probably months later. We listened to all the tapes that
kind of see what happened, and then we realized, holy crap, Wow,
(11:55):
this is important piece of history here, yea. So as
(12:25):
I said earlier, we're going to air the entire recording.
If you want, you can skip ahead seventy minutes to
the attacks, but I encourage you to listen to everything,
close your eyes, immerse yourself eleven seventy minutes until the
world changes. Walking toward the trade center in the mall,
underneath the trade center in a cafe between the towers.
(12:50):
This especially as you're ronning the miller with the public
Ruption Squad of the Federal Brew of Investigation. Today's date
is September eleven, the year two thousand one. It's time
now is a pastment six am today We'll be doing
a consensual body recording between Stephen McCardell and Howard Haveler
witnessing this. Uh meat will be special as in Victor
(13:14):
Rocho with the FBI and Deputy Spector General Stasi Patel
with the New York City Department Investigation. I will now
give Stephen mccarll the recording device. M he said, they

(59:36):

side didn't discuss them the way he got discharging and
(01:02:33):
painting was shot on. Yeah, I don't know. I want
to take you don't want to time. It's really not
(01:03:03):
as much of a priority right now. Anyway we do.
Reminy hasn't expense you know, the close lease. I want
to see that. Don't want to see that. Yeah, can
(01:03:30):
really really do it any I'm just trying to think
how that he took six percent of most first incomes
for easy that's would be very happy or the eliminated
manituated to see that's ridiculous though, I mean they're not
in reality woman manages ability to two or three percent.
(01:03:53):
Once you get reading ordered in there, we're looking at
seven six seven percent and they're part of that. That's
utter the pre I intended. But I'm we have to
tell you my mind has hid right, it's drag it out.

They should be re doing guideline I I got us
right right, and then tell you who're taking on the
(01:06:12):
chain worn even if you don't add that or do
have the hother mechanism for that or or even take
it out of the income for that matter. What you
have to increase, you have to re fucking and the
increase fagency read on the increase, Captain. I mean you
don't necessarily have to do something with that, you know.
