Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, money Movers, Welcome back to money Moves, the daily
podcast determined to give you the keys to the Kingdom
of financial stability, wealth and abundance. You may have seen
her fun and informative tips on the bank your social

(00:21):
media page where she's answering all of your financial questions.
Money Movers, Please welcome Cyrense Pierce. Cyrinse, it's so good
to have you. Thank you so much for having me. Well, Welcome, Welcome,
Welcome to our podcast. Money Moves is so excited to
have you. One thing I love about your platform, Cyrense,
is your videos and your designs are so vibrant and informative.

(00:44):
How do you manage to pack so much information into
these tiny, little tidbit videos. I guess just experienced personal
experience and just talking to you as an individual and
relating that. You know, it's not easy to consume this
financial edgy cation, especially when it's like Wikipedia or like
Investipedia is very textbooky, get kind of boring. Just spicing

(01:07):
it up and speaking our language I think makes it
a lot easier, you know, just waking us. I'm saying,
get okay, me yank them, okay. Now I'm into and
I'm into it. I'm interested what you're talking about me.
It's making it fun and you know, relatable, And I
feel like it's really funny because a lot of people
that give me um that talked to me and tell me, oh,
I really relate to what you're saying and I can

(01:28):
understand it. Finally, are a lot of Latinos and people
from the black and brown community, like you're finally speaking
our language and it's easier for us to understand because
this textbooky stuff is not really resonating with where we're
at right now. And I think that's one of the
biggest hurdles and gaps within the personal finance industry. Everything
is so picture perfect black and white, and there's so

(01:51):
much color in our community. There's so much vibrancy, so
many different shades of gray that they are just not
account owning for and that we have to fill in.
That's why I love being, you know, a woman of
color that's talking about personal finances, because we know how
to make stuff happen. You know, other people might look
at Rice and being that's a sacrifice, but we know
how that's a party right there. I mean, we're gonna

(02:15):
be eating good and that's the whole point. You know,
we know how it turned something that looks like a
sacrifice and make it fun. I love that. Okay, you
know what. I have another question. In the intro, we
talked about how you got rid of dollars worth of debt.
That's a huge amount. I want to know one where
that debt came from, and how long it took you
to pay it off and how you did it. So realistically,

(02:40):
most of our debt. About our debt was student loans.
So my husband he went to college in Alabama, and
I didn't know honestly how expensive college was outside of California.
California has kind of like made it like very nice,
is very cost effective, but you know, because he went
to school in Alabama is very expensive. Um. Also, we

(03:02):
had two cars, like you know, sometimes we don't consider
our vehicles as debt, but it really is debt, and
these things start to add up. So when we added
it all up, I was like, oh my goodness, this
is dollars of debt. This is insane. So we started
breaking it up in phases. We talked about our debt
and things that concerned us. We decided to pay off

(03:22):
our student loans first, because since I was in the
finance industry, something that a lot of people don't know
is that you cannot help people learn about personal finances
and become a financial advisor if you can't even handle
your own finances, like bank, like, come on now, like
you're struggling. You're not doing what you need to be doing.
So I told my husband about this year. You know,

(03:44):
I can't file bankruptcy even if we go through another,
oh eight a pandemic. We have to be tip top
on top of all of our finances because I worked
really hard for my career. I worked really hard to
getting educated, and I love what I'm doing. So we're like,
you know what, We're gonna find a way to pay
off our student loans before we even say I do.

(04:05):
And also, uh plan our wedding at the same time,
so we had to make some modifications. You know, I
was working to getting my certifications at work, my husband
was doing a side hustle, and we were making a
lot more money to help out to make these gym
a reality. But we also had to extend our time frame,
so we pushed our wedding out a few more months.

(04:25):
And you know, it's more than husbands. You know, oftentimes,
especially in relationships, couples struggle with because you know, a
wedding is a big deal and nobody wants to cut
corners or sacrifice. But like having those conversations and saying, okay,
well we might not be able to get married, you
know in two months. We might have to push it
out so that we can go into enter into this
marriage without debt, and like, these are tough conversations, they are,

(04:49):
And it was hard because especially when you're finding out
like your dream dress, like come on out, you're not
gonna want to settle on your dream dress. So I
actually started making some other personal sacrifices and cutting my
personal play money of you know, buying clothes and getting
my nails done all that, and I said, you know what,
this is a bigger goal for me to have my
dream dress. And I did that and it kind of

(05:10):
wasn't fun, but it was only temporary. It's only until
that wedding, and it kind of especially like in our community,
Latin community, but like we like we meet our nails done,
Like and what do you do? How do you stretch it?
Do you stretch it for four weeks? I mean, you
can't go six weeks, you know, do you find someone cheaper?
It's tough, and these are things that were like can
I sacrifice? But the big thing was your wedding and

(05:33):
your dream dress. And at the end of the day,
who cares about your nails. You had your dream wedding
and you had no jobt exactly, and no debt, So
it was like a double celebration. A lot of people
didn't know that in our family we actually paid for
our wedding and paid off our debt. We on our
honeymoon so excited back home to the d R and
it just felt like we accomplished so much, and just

(05:54):
seeing how much we could accomplished allowed us to transition
to our marriage and starting our own businesses and starting
our family here in San Diego, and also you know,
dealing with difficult moments like death in the family, open
heart surgeries, mental breakdowns sometimes because if you don't, you know,
work together, then you know it's been winning. You got

(06:16):
for you guys to make it last. Well, I feel
like we're two kindred spirits here and I'm really excited
that you were on board with the Greenwood family. Can
you just tell us why you were excited? To partner
with Bank Greenwood and Money Moves UM, and I just
look forward to working together with you. Of course, thank you.
I love Greenwood's initiative. They are really interested in helping

(06:39):
the black and brown community learn about financial literacy, and
this is something that our community has been very undeserved
and very underserved for a very long time. And just
learning more about our history and how we've been treating
this country and seeing how my family is back home,
UM struggling financially, it just makes you really UM appreciate

(07:01):
the companies and the people who are really wanting to
help people not just get rich quick, but also um
helping people get the actual tools necessary so they can
take their finances to the next level. You know, something
that I was taught at home is that life isn't
a race is a marathon, but as Latinos, it's more
of like a relay race. We are passing with baton.

(07:22):
All the hard work that my grandmother did to get
us to this country is not gonna go for nothing.
The hard work that my dad did, you know, I'm
not gonna make sure that you know, just goes for nothing.
You know, we're taking all that hard work and now
We're gonna be working smart strategically so that we can
maintain what we are working hard for, so that the
next generation, my kids can start off on the you know,

(07:43):
start third relay race a little more ahead than I was.
And I think we all want that for our kids,
for the next generation, our community. You know, we all
want to see each other move forward. And I love
that and be comfortable and like live this life to
the fullest. I love that absolutely, Syrannies. We're running out
of time today, but can you please share with our
