Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, money Movers, Welcome back to Money Moves, the daily
podcast determined to give you the key to the Kingdom
of financial stability, wealth and abundance. Hey, money Movers, Welcome
back to the Money Moves podcast powered by Greenwood. This
(00:22):
is your host, Tanya Sam and I'm so excited to
have you here because today we have another segment of
business news with Asha Wilkinson. Hi, Asha, welcome to the podcast. Hey, Hey,
how you doing. I am good. I'm happy to have
you here because you know, we have a lot of
our listeners that are aspiring and successful entrepreneurs and we
are so happy to have you, Asha Wilkinson esquire here
(00:46):
to help us navigate some of the questions that a
lot of these early entrepreneurs have. And I want to
get your take on a really popular question that I
think every entrepreneur should ask themselves before starting a business.
And that question is kind of an enigma to many entrepreneurs.
Um It starts off with, you know, sort of looking
(01:07):
at your businesses, how do I get there? What does
it look like? As opposed to being held back by
this question of like what do I don't have? What's
holding me back from starting? What are your thoughts on that. Yeah,
I think it's a It's a really good question, and
it's just a subtle shift in perspective, right, because I
think we as humans are thinking about what is our
present situation. I only have a hundred dollars to start
(01:30):
this business? What can I do with a hundred dollars?
But I'm gonna challenge everyone to flip that question and say,
not what can I do with a hundred dollars, but
where do I want my business to be next month,
next quarter, next year, in the next five years, And
look at that metric, that goal, and then say what
do I need to do to get there? Because then
you're not limited by your present situation. You're only limited
(01:52):
by the vision that you're trying to get to. And
I know tons of people myself included, and you all
as listeners as well, who are super resourceful. You're not
limited by your situation. You're gonna do whatever you can
to get to where you need to go, you know.
And this is really interesting to me, and it's kind
of funny. Um it kind of it reminds me of
The Secret, right, and everyone always talks about that book,
(02:13):
The Secret. But one of the key takeaways that I
took from that is it's not just like Amazon, where
you wish for something and your successful business drops in
your lap. But it's having the intention to understand what
success looks like five years, ten years, and then making
breaking it down into steps so that you can achieve
those goals. And so if you're just like I want
(02:33):
to be successful, like, well what does that mean? And
you really have to do the work to break down Okay,
I want this many customers. I want to sell this product.
I want to sell it here, then I want to
sell it there, and then it kind of makes starting
a business much more palatable, absolutely, right, because it's it's
hard to bite the whole cake at the same time, right,
(02:54):
But if you take a little bite here and a
little bite there, before you know it, you'll be moving.
Another thing too, that's like adjacent to this or similarly related,
is that we will take action that supports our belief me. So,
if you ever find yourself in a situation where you're like,
I want to do X, let's use a comment. I
want to lose weight, right, I want to lose weight,
(03:15):
But if I don't actually believe that I can lose weight,
I'm not going to be taking the steps and taking
the actions that are going to lead to that result.
So if I don't think I can do it, I'm
not going to go to the gym, or if I go,
I'm not really going to give it my all. Whereas
if I believe that I can lose weight, if I
believe that I can build this business, if I could
believe that I can get a hundred new customers in
(03:36):
the next month, I am going to do everything that
I can to support that belief. So your beliefs are
really really important in determining how successful your business is
going to be as well. You know, and this is
so funny because I feel like we're sort of segueing
into this like mindfulness money moves, But it's so important
because you know, I think that people don't really understand
(03:58):
the weight of this concept of leaving in yourself and
like we hear it all the time. But you know,
the most successful people, if you go back and listen
to them on podcasts or listen to the books that
they write, they have this unbreakable belief in what they
are building and who they will be. And you know,
sometimes it comes across as like super corny. They're telling
themselves affirmations or this. But that stuff works. It absolutely works.
(04:23):
And you know, oftentimes we think about to your point
of like seguating into mindfulness, we often think that the
business side of business has nothing to do with us
as a person. But a lot of businesses have started
because I had an idea, because you had an idea,
you had a desire to do X, y Z. So
they are a reflection of you, and you are the
one who is driving that business. If you don't get
(04:45):
yourself together mentally, mindfully, then your business is going to
be limited by what you believe about yourself. So it's
important to check those thoughts. But again asking where do
you want to go? Where do you want to be?
Do I believe I can get there? And then working
backwards to take those steps and those actions that are
(05:05):
going to get you to where you want to go. Oh,
that is so true. It's really funny. Like years ago,
I found this old vision board of mine and it
was just like all this high level stuff, be happy, exercise,
eat good food, I want a dog, blah blah blah,
like love this, but none of it was like actually
putting some action items down there on how I was
going to achieve all that stuff. Um, So I think
(05:28):
those steps are really important. I'm gonna segue us now
away from the mindfulness because some of you listening aren't
here for it, but you'll come back and listen to
this podcast and be like these two had it right. Um.
But there's also a sort of you know something that
I think that comes up in our community. A lot
we start businesses, you know, and sometimes they're called lifestyle businesses.
They're making good revenue, people are doing well. But I
(05:51):
think having this really intentional outlook on like what does
success look like and what does an exit look like,
whether it's in five years, ten years, or you know,
fifty years, um, and just having those conversations as you
build and form your businesses, what are your thoughts on that.
It's so easy to try and keep up with the joneses, right,
(06:11):
especially on social media and especially when you haven't seen
people who look like you do what you're trying to do.
But I'm here to tell you that success is whatever
you want it to be. So whether you want a
multimillion dollar business or maybe you want a business that
supports you in a way that you can be with
your kids three days a week and not have to
worry about it, or if you're like me, I want
(06:33):
a business that allows me to be location independent and
to travel the world as much as possible. Whatever you
define for success is exactly what it is going to
be for you. Doesn't have to be about money, but
it certainly can. It doesn't have to be at but
it certainly can. So just tap in right to yourself
and think about what is it that you actually want.
(06:54):
Do you want to work in it for the next
fifty years or do you want to build a business
and sell it in the next five years, Because now
you have some freedom, You've got some money, You've got
time freedom, and you know you can do whatever else
you want if you've got money and time. Yeah. And
you know, it's funny because the older and older I get,
the more I really learn about myself and even just
(07:14):
how you said, you know, I want a business that
allows me to be like like, location independent. I would
never have looked at law as that type of business,
but it is what you make it, and you if
you're intentional about what you build, it can happen. You know.
I look back at how I sort of approached my career.
I was a nurse. I loved nursing because it allowed
me to travel nurse and travel all over the place,
(07:35):
um and there was a lot of portability in in
the different areas into which I could practice. And now
as an entrepreneur, you know, I'm involved in all sorts
of different businesses and I think for a lot of entrepreneurs,
I really want to stress like, once you're building a business,
create the dream timeline. And you know, oftentimes people think
like you know, I think with our our parents generation,
(07:56):
they did the same career for their entire lives and
where past that, you know you could build a business.
You could you know, I had a beverage company at
one point. But also putting the forth sight into who
would buy this? Is it a big company where you're
going to get acquired? Am I going to sell the
rights to this I p that I formed to somebody else?
(08:16):
And like, do the research early so that it will
help you guide you on your road map to an exit. Yeah. Absolutely,
start with the in goal in mind. You know a
lot of us start businesses because we're passionate about whatever
it is that we're doing, which is perfectly fine, but
look five, ten, twenty years down the line, and build
your business in a way that will help you reach
whatever success metric it is that you are chasing, right,
(08:40):
I My mom definitely worked for the same school district
for about forty years, and so when I was like,
I want to travel the world, she was like what
Like that was not security and stability for her generation.
And so I had to learn to trust myself and
to do what I just had to internally know to
be right. And there weren't. There aren't a lot of
(09:00):
virtual law firms that are out there. There just aren't right.
There aren't people doing what I do. And you have
to believe in yourself and trust yourself and follow the
vision that was given to you to build the business
that you want. Oh that's beautiful because we are all
the creators of our life. And I think there's a
great quote that I love so much. It's like the
best way to predict the future is to create it. Yes,
(09:22):
And like I just that quote just sticks for me.
I didn't understand it for a long time, But the
best way to predict our futures is to create it.
And we have that capacity. It's it's such a beautiful
thing and it's a gift if we all just harness
it and like let's go right, and it gives you
so much more ownership. Right. I think a lot of
times we can get into the right of like things
happen to me, you know, instead of thinking that we
(09:44):
are created as well. If I'm successful in business, it's
because somebody found me. It's because you know. It's like
this passive kind of a thing. But we are constantly creating.
We can pivot, we can change our minds, we can grow,
we can scale, but we can do whatever we want.
You just have to believe it and empower your self
enough to do it. Oh my gosh, that's beautiful. I'm
going to close this out on that because I feel
(10:05):
like we're just ending on a high point and we
are the creators. We have the power to create, you know,
magnificent things and abundance in our own lives. UM. So
