(00:21):
we are kicking off a very special episode in honor
of black love and nuptials and all things amazing. Our
special guest Angel Riches here, and we are talking about
planning a wedding, budgeting for a wedding. How do you
even have a successful wedding without throwing yourself into so
much debt. We are doing this in honor of the
fact that Angel and her husband just got married, so
(00:43):
she's going to share so much wisdom and real life
knowledge with us. Welcome to the podcast. Newlywed Angel rich
How are you Yes, yes, yes, kiss us all around, kisses, kisses, kissing, Congratulations,
congratulations on your wedding. Super excited I did, and so
much positive love and blessings and a lifetime of happiness
(01:04):
go out to you. But why I am so excited
about this is because you were about to tell us
how to actually plan a successful wedding, Plan the wedding
of your dreams, but not destroy the bank and wreck
your credit in the process. Yes, Lord have mercy. Well,
first of all, Love John's fairy Tale was definitely the
wedding of my dreams. But planning for it was no
(01:27):
small feet, let me tell you. And there are some
lessons that I have learned along the way and planning
for this massive wedding. It took a year of planning
and I'm really actually happy that we took the time
to put our finances in the forefront as we went
about this wedding, and I look forward to sharing some
tips today with everybody. Amazing, All right, let's start at
(01:51):
the beginning. So, first of all, your wedding was amazing.
It was everything that you dreamed. How do you go
about doing this without, you know, putting yourself into too
much debt. It's a stretch to plan a wedding these days. Yes, Well,
the first thing first is you have to have a
realistic budget. You have to actually understand how much money
(02:11):
you can afford for your letting, and you have to
take into consideration your debt as well, so that you
make sure you're not creating more debt for yourself as
well as you want to make sure that you and
your partner are on the same page and not assuming
that your families are going to contribute in any way.
And since you're getting married, this should not be a
(02:32):
mythical conversation. This is another episode. Yes, okay, this isn't
a I take your word for it type of thing.
This is you both are sitting down with your bank statements,
with your credit reports, and you are firmly looking at
how much that you had. I even had us look down,
(02:53):
look up our traffic tickets. Okay, um, he had one.
I had more than one, but we're not gonna talk
about that. I had to pay off my track the
tickets because I just wanted to make sure that we
had taken care of the actual debt that we may
have had first before we started incurring new debt, and
(03:17):
that we understand our realistic savings and credit opportunities. We
also had the factor in our living expenses as well
as any potential emergencies that might come up during the
planning time, so all of this is really important. As
we went along, we both started setting aside money over
(03:39):
the year so that we could pay for different items.
Obviously had the most important item was my ring um,
which he did an excellent job of custom designing. Yes,
shout out to my love. Um so he did an
excellent job with that as well as even with the ring.
He bought the life time care package so that I
(04:02):
can't I get too free cleanings a year to be
able to break it in so that you are investing
in uh, your the value of the ring so that
as it increases in value over time. And that was
another thing he did. He made sure that it was
a ring that could increase in value over time as
opposed to um, you know, just something otherwise. And so
(04:23):
you also want to make sure that all of this
is being pleasured, including any contributions that may or may
not come from your appearance or your loved ones. Okay,
once you've done that, you now want to track what
you plan to spend, what you have to spend, and
what you want to spend, because those are three different
(04:48):
items you could want to walk into Princess Jasmine's arena. Hi,
it's kind of like the thing like you want to
be said, or just a Parker and sext in the
city wearing custom beerau wing that costs a million dollars.
But let's bring back to real life here exactly you know, UM,
(05:10):
a very real situation and came down to like our
flower budget, where we were like, how much do we
realistically want to spend on flowers? You know? UM, I
had originally budgeted it like five thousand dollars for flowers,
and from there everybody's like, oh my gosh, you need
to spend like thirty thousand on flowers. And I ended
(05:30):
up increasing it, but I didn't increase it quite to
thirty thousand. And we had a conversation between the two
of us and we were like, flowers are gonna die
in like three days even, yeah, and then what do
we do with them at the end of the day,
Like we give them away from people. So my fiance
literally went to the fireplace, turned it on and said
(05:51):
we might as well just throw the money in the fireplace.
So something else you said there was so interesting because
what happens is every you said, everybody else was like,
oh my gosh, you need to increase your fire your
flower budget to thirty thousand. Who is everybody else? Are
you in this marriage? Are you? Do you own my
credit report? Like this is what you have to really
(06:13):
not get caught up on. UM. And I can't talk
because I'm like, this is why I'm a little like,
I'm not very concerned about planning a wedding because it's
everybody else like, yes, don't get caught up in that
such facts. Truth have never been more staking. And I
am not a bridezilla, or was not a bridezilla in
(06:34):
any capacity, but I had so many bridezillas around me,
male and female, and it was quite shocking, um, how
many people was counting my coins to pay for my wedding.
And so while Carl and I were kind of, uh,
you know, we like nice things, but we are not
(06:55):
wasteful people in any capacity. So certain things, of course
needed to be paid for. We had a wonderful venue
right in front of the White House. Um, so of
course you know, uh, that's a coin that has to
be paid for, but you know, other things that can
be disposed of at the end of the day. We
didn't really see the need as much. I even live
(07:17):
next to a nursery. It's actually like a national nursery,
but they're close because of COVID. I was gonna go
over there and get the flowers from the nursery and
just have somebody come and design it. So you want
to make sure that when you're looking at these different things,
you're taking them into consideration. I'll give one more example. Um,
people were pressuring me to buy uh five dollar a
(07:38):
pair of shoes. Um. I already had a pair of
shoes that I had barely warned that were the exact
color that I wanted. And people were like, oh, but um,
and there there there. It's a high end name, but
it's not like super high end. But it's to me
that's high end, right, So so and they were like, oh,
(07:59):
but what about the picture that you have to take
um with your shoe beside the glasses and the ring.
And I'm like, what, So I'm going to spend another
five dollars on shoes I don't even what. Then I'm
gonna wear for an hour a picture for who? Picture
for who? Who are these people that that are judging
(08:21):
my life so harshly? So and if they are, I
don't meet them. Um. So then there's a lot of
other things that you want to prepare for as well,
like surprises. For instance, we had to pay for somebody
to stand at the door and verify vaccination cards. Unexpected expenses,
unexpected expenses, you know, um, valet people that came in
(08:44):
from out of town. Um that were like, uh, we
had an amazing cellist, um, photographers, videographers you know, if
they if we need them at rehearsal, we have to
pay for them to spend the night. Um. So that's
an unexpected it's expensive. And like what with the motel five,
were these like I need to stay at the four
Seasons or like you know exactly, you're hitting it right
(09:11):
on the head, you know, because our wedding um was
at a very five star hotel in front of the
White House. Um, so it's it's it was not cheap
in any capacity, and everybody wants to stay there. Um.
So that gets iffy in itself, you know. Um, then
when it comes to like the groomsmen and brides maid stresses,
(09:32):
you know, how much are you going to contribute to
that and whether or not they're gonna want to pay
for it, and um, just all of these different fees
that that might come up the biggest unexpected feet that
I had. Um, I'm going to keep the numbers a
little obscure because they were so ridiculous. But we had
signed a particular contract for the original venue price and
(09:55):
we're thinking, okay, we're paying it full, we're celebrating, proud
of ourselves. Do do the and then we go in
for the tasting and they're like, yeah, we're gonna provide
you with another bill for services and taxes. And it
was the same amounts that we had just paid for
the venue that was not in the contract. No, and
(10:18):
this is not small money. So just understanding every possible
head and fee goes a long way, even things like
creating custom cocktails, like if you don't want the standard cocktail,
if you don't want the standard champagne, Um, if you
want your kay decorated a different way, even like digital access. Um,
(10:42):
luckily I have a great report with my photographer, but
she charges other people for roy footage and I'm like
what so, Um the invitations were thousands of dollars and
I didn't expect that. So it just everything goes a
long way. And obviously don't forget your coordination. You have
to be able to pay for your coordinator and um, yeah,
(11:04):
it's like all of these different things that you don't
even think about when you go to client a wedding,
and it can be really critical, it can it can
really change the trajectory of your wedding based on and
how properly you've fledgeted for it. So a lot of people,
you know, they do get caught up in wanting to
have this like beautiful, like once in a lifetime experience.
(11:26):
Let's talk about the credit like, do people and should
people take a loan out to finance a wedding? Heck no,
so all the way. No, okay, all the way. No.
If you cannot afford the wedding, then don't add it.
Don't have that level of wedding. You can go to
(11:48):
a park, you can go to the beach, you can
go to let me honey, okay, no, like there there
if if my fiance picked the date February twenty seconds,
So we ended up having our wedding in a winter time.
But originally my father lives on a private beach in Miami.
I was doing my wedding just like outside of his house,
(12:11):
you know, or um at a park or at an orchard,
like any place like that you can't get at a
much lower rate. Fortunately, I've been blessed in life and
I get to have the wedding um of my dreams.
But you but every to each their own, you know,
everybody doesn't necessarily have to have a wedding in a
five star location. If that's not what you can afford,
(12:33):
then I would not advise somebody to do that. An
excellent way to kind of flip this around and actually
increase your credit score while you're going about this is
too before you start to go to plan your wedding,
when you're at that first step where you're going through finances.
And this is actually something I had my fiance due.
I actually helped him increase his scredit score about about
(12:55):
sixty points during this process, seriously, because I had him
are I had him analyzed his credit to debt ratio.
We went through all of the money and I had
him call his different credit cards and increase the spending
limit on his credit cards. Um then from there I
didn't had him apply for other credit cards. Then, as
(13:16):
we've been going about making payments for the UH for
the wedding, we've been placing them on the cards and
then paying it off on the cards. So this goes
back to the lessons of how you pay your bills
on time in your payment history. So all of this
is adding to his credit to debt ratio where it's
ultimately expanding what his credit looks like, and then ultimately,
(13:39):
over about eight months, he was able to write his
credit score to UH by six by sixty points. Okay,
this is how you need to start. This is what
These are the conversations that we need to have as
a community of color about how we can enter into marriage,
how we talk about marriage, and what we look for
because it's about building value together. This is beautiful. I
(14:03):
love this. I love this. I love that sixty points
come on. Of course, and then you know, I had
him add my name to everything. Then it also increased
my credit score. So this was this was a whole
move that we were able to do just being extremely
conscious of our credit. Along with the wedding, even with
(14:24):
even with his car um he needed his brakes fixed
and it was about three thousand dollars in work and
I said three thousand dollars. I said, that's a new car.
I said, look up the Kelly blue Book value on
his car. Tang it, do you know? And this I
swear this is the truth. Do you know? He looked
up the Kelly Blue Book value of his car. Normally
a card appreciates his car, appreciate it, k because there
(14:50):
is a huge shortage right now because of COVID, so
a lot of cars have actually increased in value. So
instead of him spending at three K to get his
brikes fix, he now has ten thousand dollars of equity
in that car that he can now go and trade
in that car and get a brand new car and
use the tin k of equity as a down payment.
(15:11):
There's a whole another segment, you guys. This is something
that's really interesting, and I think that has come out
of COVID, come out of what the markets are doing.
But yes, like cars, cars are just such an interesting asset.
Used to be, you drove them off the lot and
that was it. They would just appreciate. But they're appreciating
now even the ability to get used cars. So just
gotta be smarter about these things. We have to have
(15:32):
these conversations. I mean, that's such a good tip, like
are you just gonna throw three thousand dollars into um
new breaks or could you sell it? Take that you know,
appreciated value and have a little bit of play money there. Absolutely,
and all of this came as a result of our
wedding budget and just properly planning for the future. To
make sure that we were building together properly and having
(15:56):
more financial stability for our future. And I love it.
I love it well. Angel. I can't wait till you
share these pictures of this beautiful wedding and I just
love the way that you are framing your relationship. Um,
as you guys move forward, because I think you know,
the real success in building families and generational wealth is
being able to have these open conversations and not fall
(16:17):
privy to like social media and the Joneses and all
this crazy stuff. Because at the end of the day,
like the foundation you make in your families is the
most important part. So thank you for sharing with us today. Absolutely,
