Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey Money Movers, Welcome back to Money Moves, the daily
podcast determined to give you the keys to the Kingdom
of financial stability, wealth and abundance. Hey Money Movers, Welcome
back to the Money Moves podcast powered by Greenwood. Prior
(00:22):
to social media and the Internet, putting any answer at
our fingertips, our special guest this week founded one of
the few places where we could find the information about
our favorite hip hop artists throughout the nineties, the Source magazine.
He has since founded hip hop weekly Money Moves. Let's
welcome Dave Mays to the podcast. Dave, Welcome to Money Moves. Right.
(00:47):
We're happy to be here. Thank you for having me.
I love it, Dave, thank you so much for joining.
So let's past forward because I always love an entrepreneurs
second act. Tell us about what you're working on now
and what you're building. I'm really about the new project
and the new platform that I'm building right now and
something I've been planning and thinking about for a few years.
(01:08):
I think there's a really avoid you know, in the market.
Despite how huge hip hop is, bigger than it's ever been,
it still seems to me like there's not a platform
that's authentic to the culture and to the community and
kind of brings us all together for information, uh in
(01:29):
a comprehensive way like the Source did, which again wasn't
just music and fashion, but it was you know, politics
and health and you know business that we're part of
it um And there just isn't a platform out there.
So I'm building a platform called Breakbeat, Uh break Beat
being the original building block of all things hip hop.
(01:51):
And the idea behind the name and the company is
that uh in one and beyond. Even though you know,
we we see hip hop everywhere in the world around us.
You know, it's imprint is in every aspect of our
society and our lives all the time. But there's a
common thread that connects what's going on today all the
way back, you know, to nineteen seventy three and to
(02:14):
break me. And so the idea I'm focused on is
kind of creating something that can bring the generations together,
because hip hop now spans across three generations. But you
see like the divide being pushed kind of through the music,
you know, where you always see all you know, this
isn't real hip hop, this mumble wrap, and then the
younger people you just old and out of touch stured. Yeah. Right,
(02:37):
that's a narrative that's been bought into by a lot
of people. But what I see is beneath the surface,
even if you know you're fifty and somebody's twenty three,
you guys may not like the same music anymore, but
beneath the service of the music, the way you think
about things, the way you look at things. Hip hop
really has impacted that, and we share a common perspective.
(02:59):
So that's in a big picture the vision for the platform.
The very first thing I'm launching is the break Beat
podcast Networks. I've got seven or eight podcasts that we're
and then we're also building a digital app platform that
will launch that will add a whole bunch of things.
But podcasting is you know obviously very very you know, exciting,
(03:22):
fast moving, uh, influential space right now. I think it's
you know, kind of new center of kind of everything.
You know, things come all in and out of podcasting, um,
and I think there's a great opportunity. We're gonna be
doing both visual podcasts uh similar to this with you know,
hosts and discussion, but we're also doing a lot of
(03:44):
the highly produced narrative storytelling forms of podcasting which are
really huge and it's very very little constant in that
form for the hip hop community. So um, with that
in mind, I guess I can mention a couple of
the things that we're doing on the narrative series side.
We have two limited series that are in production that
(04:08):
I think are going to be really well received by
the hip hop audience. One is a story of the
Unsigned Hype column and the Source magazine. Oh that's great
doing that. In the ten part series, we're telling, you know,
all the back stories. I've got all the people that
worked at the Source involved and kind of telling how
how do we get Big East demo tape? And oh
(04:29):
my gosh, these are all the like intimate details that
everybody wants to hear. But also, like you say, it
brings us. I mean, this sounds so cheesy, It brings
us back to the Source. And I think, well, like
to your point add connectivity like through you know, if
you go back to the roots and like we see
where we all came from in the hip hop culture,
that's amazing. Yeah, And I mentioned to you that I
(04:50):
was in Chicago earlier and I'm here in part because
of the other big narrative series that I'm doing, which
is the Larry Hoover Story. Um. And this is the
first authorized telling of Larry's story. Him and his family
have never participated in documentaries or anything on his life. Um,
(05:12):
you know, he has an incredible story. Uh, he's, in
my opinion, you know, a political prisoner that deserves to
get out and that could have a positive impact on
what's going on out here in Chicago and other areas.
And there's just a lot about him that people don't
know because he's been painted in a very narrow and
negative fashion by the Chicago media and law enforcement, etcetera,
(05:36):
over over the years. But um, he has an amazing story.
We're going in ten parts on that. I've got a
couple of uh, you know kind of folks that I
call my unsigned hype of breakbeat you know, younger talent.
So we're doing a podcast with Funny Marco, who you
guys may know is you know on on Instagram. He's
(05:59):
based out in atlant and a but hilarious and we're
building his podcast. Um. And we're also doing the podcast
with uh don't call Me White Girl, who is amazing talent,
young black woman out of Philly who was a guest
host on a million dollars worth of game podcast last
year for a couple of months, and she's been going
(06:21):
viral a lot. She's hilarious, and so we're doing her podcast.
I'll be hosting my own podcast. Uh, you know, you've
got a whole bunch on your plate right now. Yeah,
that's just a few I have. I have more I
could talk about, but uh, you know, we're trying to
again offer a nice diversity content, different types of subjects, uh,
and things again that kind of connect the older and
(06:44):
the younger sides of the hip hop generation and bring
us together because we can be a lot more powerful,
you know, as a culture and as a community if
you know, we're a little more unified. I love that, Dave.
I'm really fascinated by what you're doing with BREAKBA. Can
you tell us more about your partner, Um Kendrick Ashton. Yes,
of course. Kendrick is a DC native like myself. Uh.
(07:07):
He's a few years younger than me. Um. We met
to a mutual friend a few years ago and became
really good friends. Um. Kendrick is a really accomplished entrepreneur
and businessman. UM, and he kind of you know, filled
some of those voids that I was talking about, the
things that I didn't understand at the source. Uh, Kendrick
(07:29):
is is really strong on those areas. So Kendrick uh
was an investment banking in New York after graduating law
school and business school at University of Chicago UM and
was very successful in the investment banking field in New
York for maybe fifteen years. UM. And then he moved
(07:50):
back to d C and he opened up an incredible business.
They're called the Saint James. UH. It's a five hundred
thousand square foot sports, health entertainment destination experience UM with
you know, everything under the sun in one facility. UH,
sports and recreation and health related UM and UH. He
(08:15):
also owned some restaurants in d C. But he just
really really smart, sharp and compliments me really well. I mean,
you know, we have a lot in common, but he
also has a lot of strengths that I don't have
in particularly, like I said, on the kind of finance side,
I know, I've got somebody that's really going to understand things,
(08:35):
you know, better than maybe I did in the past.
You know, that's exactly how you do it. It's all
about building like an Olympic winning team so that you
can get the gold medal, you know, debut of a
wealth of knowledge and expertise in the print and digital
media space and of course hip hop. What advice do
you have for young and expiring creatives now who are
looking to make their mark in the hip hop and
(08:57):
marketing and rate of contents? Yeah, well, um, you know,
I think a few things. I mean, just in general,
follow your passion. You know, if it's something you're passionate about,
you believe in, um, you should definitely pursue it. Um.
Like I was saying earlier in my story and many others,
You're not gonna find a lot of people that always,
you know, they're gonna believe in you from the beginning
(09:19):
when you're trying to do something entrepreneurial. So you just
kind of have to accept that, um and keep focused
on on, you know, what, what you're doing in your vision. Um.
I think there's you know, incredible opportunities now in the
digital world. UM. You know, it's different obviously with when
it comes to media. You know, magazines are no longer
a relevant you know form of media. Um. I mean
(09:42):
what I actually think with the podcast uh. Network is
that the podcast network is the solution that magazine publishers
have been seeking for twenty years, which is how to
how to create a successful digital magazine. It's never really
been done. When you look out, there no major magazine
company that can stay with our digital magazine. You know,
(10:04):
it's really profitable. It's never worked. And that was one
of my inspirations with the podcast network was, you know,
it's like taking sections of the magazine that you'd have
columns or different things, types of topics, and now you're
creating podcasts about those subjects and kind of bringing them
together under a network. UM. So that's one thing in
(10:25):
podcasting is a great space to get into. I mean,
it's it's a lot of content out there, but um,
it's also something you can do, uh, you know, fairly
efficiently without a lot of investment. Um. So if you
have some you know, a good idea on podcasts, I think,
you know, that's a great area to pursue. And just
as a whole, the digital world is still evolving, um
(10:48):
and it's still provides you know, so much opportunity to
create something you know huge with the right idea, um
you know, and and the approach the thing. So, um yeah,
I mean follow your your your passion and your dreams
and and uh, there's a lot of ways that things
(11:10):
can uh, you know, you can be very successful, uh
in this digital world that we're in right now. I
love that, all right, Dave. So, can you tell our
audience where they can find you on social media and
where your podcast will be launched so they can be
sure to tune in? Absolutely so. All the Breakbeat podcasts
(11:30):
UM will be available on all the audio podcast platforms
you know, on your iPhone or Google Podcasts, Spotify, etcetera.
Anywhere you listen to podcasts, you'll be able to hear
the audio versions. The video of podcast will be on
the Breakbeat YouTube channel. Uh you can find them. There
(11:51):
are handle on social media's Breakbeat Media UM on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etcetera.
And you can on me at at the Real Dave
Mays on Instagram as well. I love it well, the
real Dave Mays. So many of us can credit the
