Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, Money Movers. It's Tanya Sam and welcome, Welcome, Welcome
to the Money Moves Podcast powered by Grammy. I'm so excited, Okay,
I'm extremely excited about our next guest. He's somebody that
(00:21):
I think is one of the most brilliant, amazing brothers
in this country, and he's a great example of what
it's like to live a multi hyphen it, multi money
Moves life. Born in Plymouth, North Carolina, he was raised
in money Earning Mount Vernon, New York. He is a writer, comedian, actor,
real estate investor, and family man. Let's just talk about
some of the awards real quick. We'll talk about the
(00:43):
Writer's Guild, the Best Comedy Variety Series for Saturday Night Live.
We're talking about the Best Vocal Ensemble Award for Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles. You know he's getting checks for that.
And then we're talking about Best Supporting Actor Award Spider
Man Far from Home. The list is endless. Welcome to
Money Moves. J B. Smooth, Can you just first go
(01:03):
in with us and talk about how you started your
career and how you approach the money moves you made
to make your career successful. I always tell young people
or antimondooring interviews that, UM, what what I tend to
do in my preparation, in my in my planning. Um,
you know I create balance in my life. So what
(01:28):
I do is this, I make sure that you know,
I try to live about the mantra of give more
than you receive back and you will maintain what you
already have. I'm so cool you know that I used
the term make what you do well work and the
(01:49):
rest is great. You know what I'm saying that my
preparation has always been as respect my colleagues, respect the
project that I'm being brought in on. You know, one
of those coming early, stay late guys. I'm one of
those guys that I want clarity from the director, from
the producer. What do you need from me? You know?
(02:10):
And but what that has done for me iss put
me in the unique position. UM, I didn't stop on tolls,
I didn't burn bridges, so it allowed me to that
the intangibles work for me, and intengible is things I
tell young people all the time. You can be as
talented as you want to be, but if you're intangibles
ain't lined up correctly, you won't get a job because
(02:32):
you're late all the time, you won't get a job.
And you talk trash on on the set it's gonna
be a job, and you give us some attitude. You
won't get a job because you're not willing to put out,
you're not willing to expect the other actors, you know,
and that those things is what makes people stop calling you.
And here's here's what I do too. I never chase
I never chase money. I never I turned down things
(02:53):
because if I feel like I can't give you two
of what you need to make your film correct, to
make your team and show correct, I won't take it.
That's a blessing for somebody else to have. Okay, let's
take in deeper to that mindset, that idea, that concept,
because I think it's really helpful. You know what I
loved about it is hearing that you're the type of
(03:14):
worker that comes in early, leaves late, fully commits, and
are really intentional about being able to ask questions about
what folks want from you, so that you know you're
always over delivering. And I hear this concept all the time,
and I think it truly embodies success, success in any
aspects of the job, and It's applicable not just in
(03:35):
comedy and writing, in acting and in the entertainment business.
It applies to entrepreneurship as well. So tell me more
about this and where you really developed that thought process.
I've never gotten anything because I knew somebody, because they
gave it to me, you know what I'm saying. So
what I there was, I'm like this. I consider what
(03:58):
I'm doing like a blue collar job. And I've done
every job because imagine I've been a mover. I've been
I've worked for uh solder company loading stuff. I've done
you name it, I have done it. You know what
I'm saying, I'm sold firing statements is door to door.
I have done it. I apply the same thing I
(04:19):
applied to getting up in the morning, hustling towards that
towards my career. So to answer your question, I couldn't.
I gotta think like. I like to make like I
like to get my hands on what I'm earning. I
don't like giving anything. I like to feel like, Okay,
(04:40):
I'm I got this and I know and I added
up better. I add things up better when I'm knowing
that I am actually busting my ass to get it
and to make this work, saving money, putting money in
certain places, you know what I mean. And but I
gotta tell you I have I'm also big seed planter.
(05:02):
I invest each moment as individually, you know what I'm saying.
So when I say I plan a seed, that means
that's an interaction with somebody that's meeting somebody that's not
meeting somebody that's you know, that's uh doing something for free,
doing charity events, doing things that are planting seeds that
(05:22):
allow me to meet and span my circle. I span
my circle every day because I'm either doing uh. It's
kind of like remember you talk about barter in trade.
You know they did this back in the six whatever.
You know, people didn't have currency like that, so they've
got barter in trade. I'll tell you what. I'll come
(05:43):
over your home. I'll cut your trees down if you
build a fence for me. You know, I'm a barter
and trade guy, you know what I mean. I'll show
up for you. Don't worry about you don't got to
pay me for it. I'll show up for you. But
when you blow or when you get a project, give
me a call. Maybe I can I can lend a hand.
I mean, my production company can be a part of
(06:03):
your show. Maybe I can come in and do an
extra roll. You know how many times I've done um
special guests on TV shows. I can I may thousand times.
Those are all results of planting seeds with people that
you know I'm gonna do that. Sat down and had
lunch with the interns on Pooty Tang or or whatever.
(06:25):
You know movies that I did in the nineties, And
guess where those guys. You join movies twenty years old,
probably imagine where those people are rating down and say
be nice on the way up, because you're gonna run
to the same people on the way down. So I
haven't had the down because I planted all these seeds
and I don't cat they grow today. I don't care
(06:46):
they grow next month, five years, ten years, twenty years
from now. I got seeds planting right now, but I'm
probably gonna I'm gonna see it grow. I'm not a
farty years from now, because I'm willing to say I
planted enough seed that it keeps me busy, keeps me
financially straight. And those seeds could be anything. Sees can be.
Like you said, real estate could be investments, It could
(07:08):
be friendships, it could be business opportunities. These are all
planting seeds. I don't rush in to grow. Of course,
I water room once in a while. Water in them
means I'll give you a call. You're still doing good,
I'll just take it on your man, all right, you'd
be good man. They don't you know that's that's worrying
A plant a seed that already planted. You mentioned savings,
(07:30):
You mentioned real estate, and I know you just bought
and built a beautiful home. Talk about your approach to
one savings, money, and real estate and how those work
and how they fit into your career in a way
that are they able to provide you with alternate multiple
streams of income and how do you decide what risks
(07:50):
you're willing to take? Based on my career, UM, I
tried to separate everything. UM it helps with me because
I have multiple income coming in. I tend to separate
each one, apply energy to each one separately, so they're
(08:14):
not all interfering with each other. I have an amazing,
amazing business manager who listens to me, understands my interest.
I tend to uh do commercials and things that I
truly love or did I use. I've turned down so
(08:36):
many commercials because they were either didn't fit my what
my brand was, or I felt like someone else, someone
else could do it better. That's my producer had going
on my head. I turned down things because I don't
feel like I'm gonna be If I can't give you
on your thing, I would rather not take it. If
(08:57):
I'm halfway while, not take it now. I want people
to hear that real quick. That's an extremely important point.
Stop tape right here. I want people to hear that
not all money is good money. Not all money is
good money for you. Is that's what you're saying, Not
all money is good money. In other words, you're willing
because most people, particularly in the entertainment industry, in all
(09:20):
different industries, when you're a contracted worker, there's a lot
of fear that gets passed around that says, men, you
better take whatever the next job is because you don't
know when you're going to eat next. This philosophy, this
mindset is pervasive, especially for the gig economy. You know,
whether it's entertainment, and you know, we've seen this grow
and expand through lots of different industries. If they're offering
(09:42):
you something, you should just take it. But I, like you,
love to believe if it's right for me, it will
choose me, and I will let that go, knowing that
there might be other things coming to me that are
a better fit, that will prove to be much more,
that will prove to have bigger opportunity and abundance for me.
(10:03):
That's a powerful statement, but it also requires a lot
of courage and belief in yourself and and and that's
also sometimes you got to manage yourself sometimes. Even though
I got a manager an agency, you know, so many
times they recommended me for things or try to convince
me and do things, you know, And sometimes I go
with them, but I'll let them know this is not
(10:25):
right for me. I hear what you're saying, but I
know this is not gonna be good for me. And
long behold, I know myself so well that I know
when I get there, I say, didn't I tell you?
I'm telling you. I know this business. I know how
to spread myself out, not just not just a business.
I know myself. I know what insites me, so I know.
(10:48):
But if I adjust that too, building well, what I
tend to do is concentrate on one thing at a time.
I don't step on my thing, you know, I don't
give less attention to something because I'm putting everything here.
I got to balance it out a certain way. On
(11:08):
the show, we always talk about how money is essentially
a tool. It's essentially a tool to help us build
and create the lives that we've dreamed of. You know
this idea that your dreams can be your reality and
money is one of those tools to make that happen.
How did you use money as a tool to begin
to build a life you want dreamed? You would have something,
(11:29):
do a goals list. Do a goals list. I do
a goals list, so I know exactly what I'm gonna do, right,
I know exactly my time, I know exactly uh the effort,
don't put into it, do my research on it. I'll
have all that lined up even if I don't, even
if it's not immediate, I'll organize myself. And here's what
(11:50):
I do. Also, no matter what I do, I come
in at a hundred. I come in. I come in
up here. You know, while because it's easy for someone
to say, pull that back a little bit, but you're
coming down here and tell you. Then you turn it up. Bro,
(12:11):
you don't know how to turn it up. Now you
turn it up so hard and so high that now
you know you don't pistol more. They can't even understand
what just happened, you know what I mean? Now you can't.
In two it's better to come in high because everybody
know how to pull back a little bit. And that's
what anything, that's what anything you do in life. You
(12:34):
come in full of energy and full of enthusiasm, and
that's how you attack each thing. You know how to
pull back. You gotta understand how to read people's energy,
know when you're doing too much and calm down. You're
whipping it on people, and we say that's he's doing
too much, right right? I totally agree with you. I
(12:56):
talked about this all the time. It's that combination of
attitude and energy and belief in yourself. These two things
determine so much. How do you do your own self
checks to make sure you're not self sabotaging, that you're
not limiting yourself. How do you like break through those
internal blocks? Um and what do you do if maybe
you feel like you're going off in the wrong direction?
How do you check in and reset yourself. Here's one thing,
(13:21):
uh that being a comedian is a blessing. And you
know what an improviser is, improvising. I tell anybody in business,
anybody in acting, anybody, and whatever you want to do
in life, please take an improv class. Whatever you do
(13:43):
in life, take an improv class. What it's gonna teach
you is and I'm telling you it works for business,
It works for your acting, It works for anything you
want to be relationships, It works for spanning a circle.
Because allows you to listen, It allows you to see,
(14:06):
It allows you to be spontaneous in the moment. It
allows you to change the energy like this because you
just read something that it wasn't even you were so
busy talking. Without that skill, you're talking, you're not listening.
And improv also teaches you one thing to always say
yes first. Yes, you can say yes, but you can
(14:28):
say yes and or yes if or yes but what if?
And also whenever someone's coming to you. That is a
powerful skill to learn. Shonda Rhymes wrote a book about
how to Say Yes, The Year of Yes. It is
one of my favorite favorite books. And the answers yes
and there's always a power and yes. Right. And if
you get hit with a lot of nose over the
(14:48):
course of your life, particularly when it's race based, income based,
um whatever, you get used to having your guard up
and you don't allow yourself to receive all these yeses
and the possibility and pick potential of yes, this is mine.
I received it. Yeah, and in order to also do
And this is another thing that reels me in. I
think about everything. Okay, we've got a big game point
(15:11):
up tomorrow, super Bowls come up tomorrow. I think about
stuff in terms of you know, I think about a
football field layout. My thing is this. I love to
get a series of first downs. You know why. The
first down gives me first, second, third, fourth. Right now,
(15:35):
if I going for them a fourth pound, that means
I'm really confident I'm gonna I'm gonna. I'm gonna get
this first down, so it gives me four tries. Right.
So I think about life in the series and m
income in a series of first downs. If I can
just keep getting first downs, even if I don't scool
all the time, I just need to get a serment
(15:55):
of first downs. And then on defense, I just can
not let you score on me. You can get a
few first downs on me, but when I get that
red zone, my brain really soft going. I'm kind of
figure out, how are you gonna make this ship work?
Because you ain't gonna score on me. Right now we're
doing this. The middle of the field is worn out
(16:15):
because you keep I keep stopping, you keep stopping me.
I can stopping you. I can stopping you. You can
stopping me. You know what I mean. I'm giving ground,
I'm bending, but I'm not gonna break. And that's what anything.
If you think about things like that, you can say
the wrong thing. That's first down, but maybe a second
down you said the right thing. Let me third down,
(16:38):
you got another first dawn. I don't know how how
your situation is gonna work, but it's giving you more
swings at the ball. I love that. Yeah, when we
talk about savings, even if you've just said to yourself,
I've got ten dollars, I'm gonna put that ten dollars
away every week into my savings account. I'm gonna forget
it's there. I'm not gonna touch it. It should be automatic,
(17:00):
it should be ingrained in us that we just tied
that money away and squirrel it away for later. You
don't how many things I have on auto pay. Just
a bunch of things, a bunch of deposits being made
that I don't want to I don't want to see.
I just want them to just keep going. I don't
know if it's twenty five every week going into it.
(17:21):
It's absolutely something that's gonna be beneficial to you in
the end. That's got to go. That dollar cost average,
that's right, that's right. And and and your psyche, your
your your mental stability. It helps, Like twenty people get
(17:41):
stressed so hard, right, And when you get stressed, you
get desperate. And when you get desperate, you make mistakes.
You don't always say. I see a lot of people,
whether it's business wise or criminal. A lot of people
are in prison with its federal prison or or criminal.
(18:03):
They they get caught up in I call it. I
call it the um the right. A lot of people
in jail because they said, when you're safe, that means
you don't care what the outcome is. You have pushed
(18:24):
aside the positive part of what you're doing, and you
are going all in. When you say, you are giving
yourself a reason to fail because you're not sitting down
and thinking of another option of what I can actually
do here, whether it's long term or short term to
(18:45):
get out of this or to double this up and
you're safe. That means you're just gonna roll the dice
on the outcome. And that's one thing about me. I
am not I'm a terrible gambler. I am not a
roll of dice guy. I'm a guy that got to
get his hands on it and I got to I'm
(19:06):
good with time. I'm good with patience, and that means
I wait, I will wait for something major because I
know I got that in my pocket. But with all
those ups and downs, how do you maintain your positive
psyche and minimize stress levels so that you can say
focus requires patients trust faith. Yeah, I tell people all
(19:27):
the time, if there's a way of stepping outside of yourself,
your physical self and your hologram self can sit there
and right behind you like this, like and you look
at your hologram like this for you or like this,
You're good. That would be a fucking blessing to have that.
It will give you so much insight on yourself, that's yourself.
(19:51):
You know. It's like, we're gonna find a way to
communicate with yourself in order for you to police yourself. Yeah,
that's a voice in your ears, super powerful. We have
to be cognizant of those voices in your ear that
shipped on your soulder telling you you can't do it,
and be able to push them away and understand that
you are powerful and you can do it. You have
to remind yourself that you are an infinite being and
(20:14):
that you can do it. Okay, JB Is re closed out.
If you're going to speak to our Money Moves audience,
you know, when people tune into Money Moves, they're really
listening to the show and watching it and trying to
understand about how they can make and elevate their money moves.
What's the one or two things that you want to
leave folks with today? The one thing I mean, I
(20:36):
have to say also, you know I have a amazing family,
you know, and you know a beautiful wife shall so
you know she also reels me in. You know, you
need you need that person sometimes everybody, I know, everybody
doesn't have a person that that can reel the men
all the time, and it kind of it kind of
(20:57):
just running wild and they we have no idea, no
bound dreams or anything, but I've been blessed to have uh,
someone like shot in my life. Um it keeps, you know,
but we're we're blessed to have each other because, as
you know, life is a balance, and you know, we
are the most fun, loving, giving couple. We love to
(21:19):
get people together. We know certain people should know each other.
We know that certain people should know each other. We're
gonna invite him, We're gonna invite her. We're gonna invite
him and him because they should know each other. You know,
we're like, we're like that. So I think the takeaway
is find find a place, you know, where you can
(21:39):
sit down and really assess who you are so you
can apply who you are to what you are. You
know what I'm saying. So and that that that involves finances,
your they all link together. Your relationships will make your
finances better. Your finances were making relationships better you You.
(22:03):
You have to find a way to connect all those dots,
you know, and find a way to make them make
sense for you. Don't try to mimic someone else's process.
Don't be envious of someone else's process, because you're gonna
find yourself trying to do it exactly how they did it,
and it takes more than trying to copy and trying
(22:23):
to mimic what someone's doing and be envious of someone else.
Your journey will be totally different. Their journey may run
out before your journey gets really going. We're sitting in
a cartoon and with a squirrel playing mad acorns. He's
ready for You're ready for horrid times. You know you
gotta some people everything they would even there. Oh they
(22:47):
want eat. Don't eat everything. They don't want to put
it away. And that's the thing. Put it, slow down,
focus on what. It's gonna make you the best person
you can be. It's gonna make your finances better. Don't
do not step on toll don't burn bridges. Listen to you,
Listen to your inner self. It's going to help you
so much. Take that damn infrom clans. If you know
(23:10):
the tools, you can feel when you about the up.
Something that is in your pump your hands already, is
someone about to take it back? Yes you can? No,
I agree. You know when you're making mistakes. Life lessons,
life lessons, jewels and gems and a mic drop give
it up for J B Smooth. Now you officially become
part of the Money Moves family. Thank you so much
(23:30):
for your time and all the insects you gave to us.
Stay tuned to see what's coming up next on Money Moves.
