Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey Money Movers, Welcome back to Money Moves, the daily
podcast determined to give you the keys to the Kingdom
of financial stability, wealth and abundances. Hey Money Mover family,
Welcome back to the Money Moves podcast powered by green

(00:22):
We're back with another installment of Live from Greenwood. As
you know, there's quite a rich history of the community before, during,
and after the attack took place, and we are here
to tell you all of those stories. From LaToya Rose.
I'm the owner and operator of Rose Tax Solutions, the
executive producer of The Blackwall Shoot Exchange and overall what

(00:43):
we do here. We're a full service boutique tax firm.
We're very dedicated to promoting global economic justice. We do
workshops on financial literacy, business development as well as wealthy
and is man m So what brought you here where
I'm from Tassa originally traveled across really the United States

(01:07):
and got my master's degree. And what brought me home,
I really believe is the ancestors just needing me to
be home at such a time as this. So yeah,
that's it, I mean, yeah, that's it. Your primary work
is in taxas primary work is within tax bookkeeping, accounting,
services related to helping people apply the tax strategies so

(01:30):
that they can reduce in or eliminate their tax debt.
I mean, really the process is applying the knowledge of
taxes um and and strategizing with our clients and letting
them understand, like, here's how you need to operate throughout
the year so that you're not spending a whole lot

(01:50):
of money on taxes, but yet you'll have a lot
of assets. So a lot of times in our community,
we're not we run away from taxes. We cringe when
it comes to tax season, but tax this is literally
an everyday situation. So just educating people on that and
helping them through applying, you know, some strategies and understanding
money better. It matters simply because in our community, you know,

(02:13):
we have a long line of generational wealth gaps just
from slavery and just all of the different um displacement
as it relates to wealth and money in our community
for you know, hundreds of years. And so it's important
to me, as we are rebuilding the spirit of Greenwood Avenue,
not just in Tulsa but around the world, that people

(02:33):
understand that what is so complicated and what society tries
to make us be scared of like we shouldn't be
scared of it. If we apply the same principles as
are as the majority, then we can thrive in our community. Also,
Black Wall Street Exchange. I'm the executive producer of the
Black Wall Street Exchange. Yes, fam sure. It's actually an

(02:56):
annual event that we host here in Tulsa, and the
whole purpose of it is to demonstrate what it looks
like to circulate your dollars. So this particular weekend, um
we're commemorating the Tulsa Race massacre, and so what you're
seeing here is on a bigger scale of what we've
been hosting over the last three years. And throughout the year,

(03:16):
we'll also do our workshops for business development, so that
when people come to events like this, they're not just
the vendor, but there are a merchants. They realize that
when they're introduced to a new client, it may be
that one transaction, but through our workshops, we show them
how to take a transaction and transform it into more
of a relationship so that they can be a solution

(03:37):
for their clients. Right, not just customers, but their clients
year round. So can just a crash course on like
you know, basic steps. Obviously don't have time. Yeah, I
mean really when you're doing business development, it really is,
especially for minorities, black folks, you know, it's really about

(03:59):
just showing and then what the foundation looks like with
understanding their business, understanding their products, understanding the problem that
they're solving. None times out attend you're solving a problem
for other people because you once had that problem. So
getting that in a person's mind that you are a
solution and what that looks like as it relates to
service delivery, customer service, conflict resolution as well. Um. But

(04:23):
then also we do a lot with experts as it
relates to trauma, um and socialization as well. Just making
sure psychologically that black business owner understands how to stay
consistent even while they're healing through traumas that they may
not have ever physically experienced. But it's a generational curse
that has to be addressed about that, like the sort

(04:45):
of psychological trauma that affects business owners. Yeah, how you
commonly see that manifest itself or or even things deeper
in the community that seem to reverberate throughout most definitely,
I mean think about the toss of Race massacre. Right,
we're just now really talking about it, getting down to
the details. Were understanding the various size of what started

(05:07):
the massacre, How it's how it how it um how
it calls for many families who wants had hopes and
dreams to have to struggle through to build up. You know.
Um unhealed or unaddressed traumas really affects black businesses because one,

(05:29):
when you don't get down to the core of a thing,
then it can affect your day to day activities. I
was just speaking with a client about, you know, realizing, hey,
you got to figure out the core of your family
dynamics because if not, then you're gonna continue. Every time
you ask them to buy from you or you talk
about your business and they say something negative, it'll, you know,
it'll go from being a little poke to being a stab.

(05:50):
You know, and you have to be okay with your
family not supporting you and not believing or buying into
your dream all the time. So it's important for us,
especially here as Blackwall Street UM business owners, for us
to know what was here because when you come here
to gring With Avenue, you feel an energy, you feel

(06:12):
a spirit, right, not just a spirit of circulating your dollars,
but you feel that trauma, You feel that tragic energy.
And so as we've been telling the story, we've been
learning more about it. Um We've done a lot of
work professionally as well as just as a community with
understanding how do we take this information and be empowered
with it. How do we take that information and get

(06:34):
back to a sense of ownership right, how do we
either take back the land or figure out how to build,
you know, even beyond ourselves. So a lot of what
we're doing right now, even with everyone who's come around
the world to celebrate with us, to commemorate with us
this weekend, it's been our conversations where people has been
go back to your community and build, Go back to

(06:56):
your community and gather resources, work together, learn how to communicate,
you know, call that family member that you didn't talked
to figure out how to work together. Because as you
can see, you've come here to Tulsa, and you you
see this small block, but it was so much more
than that. We were forced to circulate with each other, right,
and so now we're getting back to a sense of

(07:18):
circulating with each other, expanding on our businesses, UM, expanding
even our ideas outside of Tulsa, so that we can
be stronger than we ever once was. So you can
feel free to say you don't want to, so we
speak about it. I feel like, obviously you got a
little bit emotional. Do you want to talk about what
men steve personally if you don't want to, and we

(07:38):
can move on. UM. I'm emotional just because you know,
I know direct descendants from people who UM. Case in point,
I was able to meet a descendant of John and
Lula Williams okay Um and just seeing how she came

(07:59):
to Tulsa. I look at her family's three story building
every single day and she didn't have keys to walk in.
And so stories like that. UM. Thinking about Mr. S. M.
Jackson and the fact that his grandchildren and great grandchildren
did not get the compensation that they deserved as it

(08:21):
related to him having to bury black people at a
fraction of the cost of what he actually charged and
having to accept that. But more more importantly, these businesses
who the insurance claims, those funds were not given. And
you know I do these things now. I'm an insurance agent.
I preach about having your insurance right and thinking beyond

(08:44):
yourself and and and planning ahead and what instant wealth
looks like. However, when you think about a story like Tulsa,
the Tulsa Race massacre where no funds were paid out
due to one little word riot, how it can take
away off of a people. You can you can literally
be discouraged and want to quit. So it touched me

(09:06):
and I get emotionally at times because I realized the
work that I'm doing is so important and I have
to stay in fast at it UM and now in
the position that I'm in to be able to personally
be able to exercise a lot of what I teach
to people. UM, it's so important and I'm so hopeful
about it. So my tears is not just tears of sadness,
but tears of joy that we're getting there and and

(09:27):
just seeing everyone here walking the street. I know that
people are gonna go back and it's like black folks,
we're about to be so empowered. It's scary. Yeah, I
mentioned UM insurance planning, and can you talk a little
bit about the importance of that for our community. Like
one of the things we're realizing that most people don't
even know what an the state plan is they're thinking,

(09:49):
you gotta be work. Can you talk about I literally
just got life in schurance to the top of you
having a love year old daughter, we stay away from
scared of Yeah, can you talk about the importance of
that fear and the importance of breaking away from it.
I mean, you know, a lot of it is we
have to realize, like we did not get the teachings

(10:11):
of financial literacy of money. Um, we've we've been taught
that we were slaves and we worked for free, and
you don't own land and you have nothing with In fact,
we've always been in the fluent, civilized people, you know
what I mean. So a lot of what I do,
even the workshops and just daily interaction with people, it's
I let folks know, like where you are right now.

(10:32):
You may have a negative three dollars in the bank.
You go to the food bank to eat, but you're
in love and you want to get married. You need
a prenup right now. You don't get a pre nump
once you make the money and and now you want
to go and you know you get a pre nump
at all times. You have to see the value within
yourself and your time so there are certain PaperWorks that
have to be in place, and that's just what I've

(10:53):
learned through the years. When it comes to a full
estate plan, black and white will protect you. What's in
black and white that's actually happens. So many families, especially
black families, go through probate. You know, we're so sentimental
on um. Well, I don't want to talk about death.
I don't want to talk about losing you. And that,
in fact is the very thing that we have to do.
We have to put things in place that maybe the hard, challenging,

(11:16):
difficult conversations to have because we never know. We're all
on our all time, we never know when we're gonna transition,
and especially if you have children, there has to be
a plan of action. The other thing about that is
our people. You know, we society has taught us that
we're supposed to go through the education system. We have
to go through their systems in order to be accepted

(11:38):
as valuable. You know, at age seven, your child really
should either be participating in the family business or you
should be starting the LLC for them. And so a
lot of what we're doing, especially like with tax laws
we talked about earlier, is educating people on how to
apply these various techniques, because if all you're doing is
operating on a Social Security number, then you're just out

(11:59):
here as a straw man. So just educating people on
the different terms and technologies, UM and techniques as it
relates to really UM more or less structuring your life
in a way that is corporate. That's what's important. Thank
you so much for tuning in Money Moves audience. If
