Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, money Movers, Welcome back to Money Moves, the daily
podcast determined to give you the keys to the Kingdom
of financial stability, wealth and abundance. Welcome back, money Movers
to the Money Moves podcast powered by Greenwood. We are
(00:21):
joined once again by the fitness power couple, Jason and
the Lonnie lob del a k Mr and Mrs two
weeks out. As they promised, they are here to take
us on a deep dive into building a fitness and
exercise brand and business. But just a reminder, today's deep
dive was brought to you by MasterCard, bridging the wealth
gap together with Greenwood, Mr and Mrs two weeks out.
(00:44):
Welcome back to the podcast. How are you? We are great?
Are you? Oh? We're good? So we're excited to have
you back again today. And Halani, I want to start
with your exercise brand. You mentioned in our last segment
that you made one point to million dollars last year
selling exercise gear during the pandemic. You made it super
(01:05):
easy overnight you started a Shopify store. But can you
walk us through some of the steps, tips and tricks
it took to finding a manufacturer and actually launching your
own clothing line absolutely, So everything for me was trial
and error. This was a totally new space to me.
So um, I initially told you guys about the story
(01:26):
with my bands and how I started the Shopify store
for to sell my bands, and so I continued on
that same shop by price store when I added my
body m V pieces to it, and I had a
very basic Shopify store. Literally it was what I knew.
You only know what you know, and so I set
it up the way I need to and we were operating.
(01:47):
We were operating well, but it took for me to
have a conversation with someone who had been in the
industry's name as Justin. He and his partner Cory have
a brand called Support Black Collegies, And you need to
reach out to Justin and you know, just kind of
talk to him. They're killing it in the e commerce game.
So I did, and Justin was gracious enough to meet
me at my gym and we literally sat for maybe
(02:08):
ten minutes that day and he took a look at
my back office of my Shopify. He said, Hellna, you
don't have any acts installed on your Shopify. I was like,
what act? What do you mean? We're we're making the sales.
We're bocking the roll. What do you mean acts? And
he said, you know how you shop. You do online shopping,
and if you have different pop ups that come up
for you to subscribe, you have they group items together
(02:31):
for you to buy together. If something is out of stock,
you put your email address in there and then you
know your two Yeah, all those things. I didn't have
any of that, okay, And so he said, look, he
gave me a list of eleven acts that I need
to install. Some of those were frequently bought together back
and stop. Of course you're at missing on money movers,
(02:53):
start from the beginning. Yes, so frequently bought together back
in stop of course, the abandoned part teacher and just
um willio, which you'll see. I don't have this on
my site personally, but you'll see it in a lot
of online sites. It's a wheel that pops up and
it gives you a discount when it stops on a
certain um pile. And so it's things like that that
(03:14):
keep your customers engage and keep your customers wanting to
come back um to shop with you. And one thing
I had some understand with my online store. I do
a lot of online shopping, and I didn't understand that
the things that the big brands that I see, I
could have those things too with my little store. So
(03:34):
this sea and so once I realized that now when
I'm online shopping and I see a certain feature, I
was shopping recently on the store in the UK online
and I saw their return policy, and I initially I
immediately reached out to my web designer and I said, hey,
we need to find out what access is because I
need to have this as the return policy for my website.
(03:56):
We found it, the implemented it, and so what I
found is a lot of things are trial and error,
but have conversations, have conversations with people who are killing
it in the field that you're in, and you'll find
that a lot of people are willing to give you knowledge.
You're not worrying information. And that conversation with Justin was
a game changer for me and just building my actual
(04:19):
store and and capitalizing even more so. What a great story,
because you know, I think that oftentimes, like people are
afraid to reach out, afraid to ask questions, but generally speaking,
people want to help you. If you're intentional about your ask,
you know you're not wasting their time, you know, and
you just said, like it took ten minutes, ten minutes
for him to sit down and change the whole state
(04:41):
of your website. Absolutely, And I think one of the
key factors and people wanting to help others is seeing
that you've done something. You know you're not coming to
them and it's like, hey, help me do everything started.
That kills me. And I think that's a ude thing
that we need to talk about because oftentimes people like, oh,
you guys have had some success. I would like to
(05:02):
pick your brain. Um, can you help me build my
whole business? I have an idea. I haven't done anything
on it, but I want you to go do the
research and come back and tell me what to do.
That's not how it works. That's an automatic turn off.
That's one of those things. It's like, hey, I need
for you to go start the process now and tuning.
I don't mind sharing the things that the mistakes I've made,
(05:25):
that the gems I've found, I don't mind sharing that
with anyone. I've shared those things of people who are
in the same exact arena as myself, because at the
end of the day, I understand the execution is going
to be different. I can give you everything, but you
have still got to make it your own and you've
got to execute on it. So that conversation with Justin
was truly a game changer for me. Even with shipping.
(05:46):
He saved me so much money just on shipping alone. Shipping. Yes,
so Tim, we shipp we both shipp through you what USPS?
And I was shipping everything priority, everything is going out party.
So literally I was spending between seven and ten dollars
her shipment um going out USPS. And he said, no,
(06:07):
that's not. No. Priority is for people who they pay
a certain amount that that's what they're asking for. Everyone
else goes with regular mail, you know, so they might
it may take three to five days versus one to
two days to get it, but it's stage you just say, hacks.
It was just little things like that that made such
(06:28):
a difference in helping me to scale my business. And yeah, absolutely,
when you're talking about thousands of orders and that three
to four dollars, that's a game changer in the grand
scheme of things, you know, your bottom line. So um,
one of the other things with trying to find manufacturers,
that's one of that's one of the hot topic questions
(06:51):
who's your manufacturer? Share your vendor list with me? And
the vendor list is something that I've worked really really
hard to figure out, and it literally came from trial
and error. There are there's a site called ali baba
dot com. There's also one called ali express dot com.
Very known sits. You know, everyone knows about these things,
(07:11):
and you'll see things on there from two dollars. You'll
see an outfit that costs two dollars all the ways
the same one that costs twenty dollars. And it's all
about quality. So if you purchased two dollar item, you're
gonna get a two dollar type of outfit. You know.
Suggestion is like what I saw Hellani doing was or
in all these samples, I'm talking about a hundred samples.
(07:33):
Come to the house and she's over but anyway, all
these I saw these samples, and I'm like, what are
you doing? And she explains, yeah, you got it. You
have to spend the money and get samples. Literally, until
I found Violet vendors that I could trust, I bought everything.
I bought King and sample for him first, and then
I would wear it and I would exercise it. And
I would test the integrity of it before I would
(07:54):
purchase it in both to sell to my customers. So
now after almost two years in business, I have vendors
that I go to for everything, so I don't need
samples anymore. Literally, when they say, hey, this is quality,
this is what your brand would includes, I know that
you know my brand, yeah, and I can go ahead
in the order. But it's some times to get to
that point, and it's a lot of trial and error,
(08:16):
a lot of it, but it's worth it in the
end because once you build solid relationships with these vendors,
you can do whatever. You can customize things, you can
get things ready. Stock. Is just a lot of parameters
that you have when you're placing your orders for your merchandise.
And I think that's fair. Like you know when people
message and be like who's your vendor? Help, Like, no,
this is your secret sauce. There's some stuff that you
(08:36):
can't give away. You'll help people build a store a cart,
but like, that's a secret sauce that you invested a
lot of money into creating almost a formula for your products. Absolutely, absolutely,
And I tell people all the time, you know, you
see a lot of people online selling vendors list. That's cool,
but understand that's not their personal vendors and not giving
me their vendors. They're still keeping those some things you
have to keep near and dear to your heart. My vendors,
(08:59):
that's one of those things. You know. I can help
you find good vendors for you, but my vendors their mind.
So what's next for you? Guys? What are Mr and
Mrs Two weeks out? Version three point out looking? What
does that look like? Education? Yeah? Education, um real quick.
I mean you're tired of my stories. But I had
(09:21):
a friend of mine. So all my friends they teach court.
They have courses and things in that nature. My best friend,
he has a trucking portal. He's been in the truck
in industry, making millions of dollars in trucking and he's
teaching people how to do it now. He got stud
under him on their way to million dollars. Um So,
I got a few partners like that. Um So, we
were out in Mexico during the pandemic. Everything is closed
(09:42):
and they're like, bro, you need to come out with
a course. I'm like, I don't want to come out
on the course. I'm taking fitness. He's like, yeah, we'll
come out with something else, you know what I mean.
But he said, if you pull your family out of poverty,
you know, you put your family out of being broke,
you should apply that to the next man, you know,
reach back and help the next person. So when we
put it like that, I kind of said, I kind
of took it at it's my duty to tell people
(10:04):
what I've done, so to take it a step further.
With that in the back of my mind, one of
my friends said, hey, I got five thousand was what
should I do with it? And my immediate response was like,
I don't know. But then I thought about I said, yeah,
I'm like, I know what to do with five thousand dollars.
I gave her fifteen hundred. She did something with it,
you know that type of thing. So um, I really
started thinking out of my fat tank. And the manager
(10:26):
at my gym wanted fifteen hundred fifteen hundred dollar loan
to start Airbnb. I look up, she got four Airbnbs
and she's teaching her friends how to do it. So
I said, I need the package just and put it
in the course, you know, because I was along the
way helping it, right. So then I thought about my brother.
He came on from jail and needed four thousand ills
for a car. I get him a car, and every
(10:47):
time I keep picking them up, like where the hell
is the car about? You? He said? I put it
on tour on like what's to to I read these
cars out, you know. So here's another example. I gave
somebody four thousand ills, he bought a car. Now he
has set in cars, he's making six figures. So those
two things I packaged together and I put a course
together called four K Pathway to Success dot Com. And
(11:09):
it's four K because I'm teaching my people. I'm from
Kelly Row, you know, I'm teaching my people what to
do with four thousand dollars or less, how to get
into business. So that was my contribution, and you know,
it's been doing good. My students going crazy right now. Wow.
I love that. I mean, that is exactly what we
are inspired by and here to do with Greenwood and
(11:30):
especially on this Money Means podcast, because it's about helping
not just you know, creating generational wealth within your family,
but helping create generational wealth within our communities for so
many other because like you know, we all win when
we lift each other up. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. And um,
my daughter, she texted me. My daughter, she's sixteen, and
(11:50):
she texted me the other day and she said, Mom,
what does success me? And I said to me, success
is when you can help other people to attain a
level of success. And that's what we're trying to do
at this point. So, just like he has four K Pathway,
I've started bosh University b A W S E University
dot com and what that is is teaching people how
(12:10):
to go from working for a boss to become their
own boss. Because of what I was able to do
within the time frame just a year and a half,
I was able to retire from the Fire Service twelve
years early as a results of the and now I
have my time freedom and able to do the things
that I need to do for myself for my family,
And at this time, I feel like I need to
(12:31):
help other people to be able to attain that level
of of freedom and time management. And you know, time
is something you cannot get back once as well, and
so you know, and so to be able to teach
people how to become their own boss and to teach
them the foundational pieces that are necessary for any business whatsoever.
So now it's for us. It's about giving back to
(12:52):
others and helping others to just do better. Oh my gosh,
you guys are like humanitarians all of this. I know.
I'm serious. I'm really inspired by what you're doing. And
thank you for sharing this story because there's so much
more to see, you know, just from Instagram, from visiting
your gym, and I promise you I'm going to join
in a class at some point. I'm actually a little scarred,
(13:13):
but I love So I just want to close by
asking you guys. You know, it's a beautiful thing that
you guys get to work together, make money together, build
a family together. Um, what are some advice that you
have for you know, couples that are looking to start
a business together. You know, is there tips to communication,
date nights? How do you balance the work love life
(13:35):
play aspects? So one thing is, um, like, my off
day used to be Friday, right, So if I got
to run around run my ear rands on Friday, I'm
gonna take her with me. And we just turned them
into date day, right, So yeah, we might go to work,
we might drive in the same car every day. But
we don't pass a hundred restaurants. Let's take one day
out of that week and make it something, even if
(13:58):
it's right before we get the kids, one hour or
two hours or whatever. Um, just being very intentional about
separating work and you know, having having a time to
stop talking about work. You know, a's one point in
time where's all we talked about was business. We have
to regroup and say, hey, let's take a step back
from that. Not on Fridays, Let's talk about something else,
you know, that's one thing. Yes, So literally there are
(14:20):
days when I tell him we're not talking about business
at all at all. And that's hard because we do.
Everything is bottled up with us, you know, it's hard.
But literally, we just have to be really really really
really intentional about saying we're not talking about business, talk
about everything else we have going on, and talk about
our children. Let's talk about where we're going on our
(14:42):
next trip, and we and that's another thing that we do,
so we travel a lot, so we make the time
to just totally unplug from things and just have that
one on one time that we need all the time.
And that means that without the children too, and just
have the time that we need for us. Yeah, I
was gonna say mentioned one more thing. Communication. Um, even
(15:03):
when we were we were doing separate things. If I'm
in the gym, right and she sees something I'm recording,
I'm doing booty exercises, I got the the hot girls. Whatever.
If I'm recording something she doesn't like and she has
a problem with it, she's gonna voice that, hey, I
didn't like that, angle, take that down, do this, do
that third. And me as a man, I got my
(15:26):
ego and my pride, and you know, I'm not doing
nothing intentionally, but if it makes her uncomfortable, part of
being a man is being mad enough to just do it,
just not having to understand it. You know, she has
her perspective. I have mine, and that's okay. We don't
have to agree. We're din'ta agree to disagree, and I'm
just gonna take it down and it's no more smoke.
So what's for dinner? You know, we just get on
(15:46):
to the next subject instead of just bickering and going
back and forth because I didn't intentionally do something, you
know past this. So communication is key. Having uncomfortable conversations
is key. Um, yeah, just keeping a love which what
what's your spouse? You know, being very honest and open
about you know your intentions and how you plan all
(16:07):
doing business? Wow, I mean after how many years twenty
three years together, I think you guys are seriously offering
some really great tips there and I love to hear it.
You know, it is just a beautiful thing to see
black love and black love that gets to work together,
build families together, and like I said, make big money
moves together. So thank you guys so much. We've all
(16:27):
loved your social media videos and we hope that you
both continue to create and build this beautiful brand that
you guys have together. That's all the time we have
today Mr and Mrs two weeks out, but we'd love
to see you back again. Thank you so much for
sharing and we just can't wait to see what's next
for both of you. Thank you so much for having
