Speaker 1 (00:09):
Yes and Lo and Lo. Welcome to the Naughty even
Nice Shamia host Rob Shooter, and it's Tuesday. Our dear
friend Delana's off today. She's actually in la I think
she's interviewing Cynthia Rivo from the Wicked movie. I know
they held their private screening for Deleana last week, so
(00:30):
she saw the movie. She hasn't told me yet if
it's fabulous. I know it is, but she's such a
professional she won't say a word until she is allowed to.
But Delana got to see Wicked last week and now
she's out in California interviewing Cynthia. I think this is
for Ebony magazine, so fingers crossed. I'll let you know
when the story is posted. Okay, let's jump into our show.
(00:51):
What time is it, my friends? It is tea time.
Big story at the top of the show. Phil Donahue,
the iconic talk show host, has died at eighty eight.
Phil pioneered talk shows. He really did. He revolutionized the
TV business. His family confirmed that he died on Sunday night,
(01:14):
surrounded by loved ones, following a long illness. Now he
knew Phil had been ill for quite some time. We
hadn't seen him in a while, and he enjoyed the spotlight.
He enjoyed the attention. He used to say that all
the time, and so the fact that he disappeared, we
all heard rumors that he wasn't doing so well. Phil
(01:36):
was a man of many, many talents, but best known
for the Phil donn a huge show that brought provocative
issues and audience participation into American that live in your rooms.
Just think about that for a second. Audience participation was
so used to seeing Oprah walk around the audience with
a microphone Ricky Lake did. It was so used to
(01:59):
that happening. That was Phil Donahue. He who was the
first to do that, and also to provocative issues. He
was fearless. He talked about subjects that Americans just did
not talk about, particularly on daytime TV. In fact, before Phil,
daytime TV was soap operas. It was game shows, it
(02:21):
was cooking shows. It was not these real, real, impactful,
important subjects that often we stayed away from. We thought
nobody would want to watch this, We thought it was
just too much. His shows started in Dayton, Ohio, and
he did tattle subjects like the abuse in the Catholic Church,
(02:41):
the klu Klux Klan, Feminism, day rights before they ever
became mainstream. Once his show was a huge hitic moved
to Chicago for a little bit, and then it moved
to New York City. It was broadcast from the iconic
thirty Rockefeller Plaza. In an inter with Nelson Mendella following
(03:03):
Mendela's release from prison in nineteen ninety, he was remembered
as being just fantastic at doing this. It was easy
to put him into a box and say he could
only do one thing, but no. He also too took
his show to the Soviet Union, cementing his reputation as
a television legend. Now. His show ended in nineteen ninety six,
(03:25):
after a remarkable twenty six years. Twenty six and he
earned twenty ms. That's really important. It's really telling here
because a lot of TV shows are a lot of fun,
but they don't win Emmy Awards. They don't win awards.
Phil was both a lot of fun a lot of
people watched, and it was also quality quality that won
(03:46):
twenty Emmy Awards. He survived by his wife forty four years,
Marlo Thomas, who was by his side recently in twenty
twenty four when we saw him for the last time
in May when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom
awarded by President Biden. Was also I should point this out.
(04:08):
I want to point this out. He was also known
for his generosity and commitment to understanding the human experience.
He used to say he didn't need celebrities on his show.
The celebrities were the audience. It was us. We all
have a story and if we tell it in a respectful,
kind way, then that is something we can all enjoy
(04:31):
learn from listen to. He was really, really, I can't
overestimate this a pioneer. So if you don't know who
Phil Donna, who is? And I'm sure there's a lot
of our younger listeners who do not google him, check
him out, because there'd be no Watch What Happens Live,
no Kelly Clarkson, no Ellen, and certainly no oph Oprah
put out a really beautiful statement. Let me read it
(04:53):
to you. Oprah said the following quote. There wouldn't have
been an Oprah show without Phil Donna being the first
to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be
taken seriously. So before this, the executives at the networks
they didn't take women watching TV very seriously. They thought
they just wanted cooking shows, or fashion shows or soap opera's.
(05:16):
Oh no, no, no. Phil showed everybody that that was
not true. Oprah concluded by saying, quote, he was a pioneer.
I'm glad I got to thank him for it. Rest
in peace. She did thank him, She had him on
her show, and she literally said, I'm here because of you,
and we all want to thank you. We all stand
(05:39):
on your shoulders. So if you love daytime TV, if
you love these shows, you can tip your hat today
to Phil Donahue. Let's end with what his wife said,
Marla Thomas. It was a really sweet, poignant post. She
put up an nostalgic picture of the couple from their
younger years. They were together there for forty four years,
riding on her motor side, all the symbol of the
(06:01):
adventurous spirit that the two of them shared. She wrote
the following quote, I'm sure by now you've heard the
very sad news that I lost my sweetheart last night.
Oh it's so beautiful. I lost my sweetheart. We all
lost our sweetheart, didn't we. He was a remarkable man.
Friends of mine who work in TV say that they
(06:23):
were absolutely gobsmacked by him. Everybody thinks it's Oprah. Oprah's
important and did a fabulous show change TV too. But
he was the pioneer. He was first, and we forget
that sometimes, don't we. It was Phil. Let's remember it today,
and let's remember him too. There's no pole question on
the day. We only do pole questions on our lead story,
(06:45):
and we certainly don't do pole questions when somebody passes.
Rest in peace, Rest in power. Okay, moving along, So
more lows is coming out about Blake Lively. So there's
another incident when she snapped at her reporter. I know
a friend of mine, Chris Rosenar, he's a great reporter.
She snapped at him over a question about her romance.
(07:07):
So she clapped back at a reporter who dared dared
to probe into her rumored relationship with her then boyfriend
Gossip Girl co star Penn Badly. It was a two
thousand and eight interview with New York magazine and Lively
was discussing her role in a film where she kissed
the legendary Alan Arkins. So she said, he's a bit
(07:29):
of an upgrade from Chance and Penn referring to her
two co stars. So she was making fun and joining it. Well, Chris,
he's a brilliant reporter. Chris jumped in and took this
as an opportunity to ask her about her off screen
romances with Penn, and she did not like it. She
was kurt and she replied, quote, I thought this was
(07:52):
New York magazine. I thought you were supposed to be classy. Now,
if Blake wasn't getting a lot of bad press at
the moment, I would say, well, she was just defending
her privacy here. She doesn't want to talk about her privacy.
She did this interview in two thousand and eight, and
at the time nobody cared about this answer. But now,
(08:12):
because there's so many interviews of Blake being let's say, prickly,
a little prickly, that now this is just adding to
the narrative that maybe Blake isn't such a nice person.
There is a devastating, long, long article on vox Vox
about Blake. You should read it, and it talks about
how someone we thought was a really great person might
(08:35):
be a mean girl. Somebody has used her power to
not necessarily do always the right thing and so now
this debate is really, really loud, and a lot of
people are coming forward. It sort of reminds me of
the Ellen days when the rumors started to circulate about Ellen.
They started as a whisper and then they got louder
(08:58):
and louder and louder. That's same process now is happening
to Blake. Just yesterday on my Instagram page, three producers
from very very big TV shows they DM me and said,
when Blake was on our show, behind the scenes, she
was not very nice. One said she was awful to
(09:20):
the staff, and then she went out in front of
the camera and she was charming. She looked great, she
was funny, but then she came backstage and turned into
someone that wasn't very kind again. So maybe there's a
side of Blake here. It does catch up with you,
doesn't it. If you're rude ones, you're rude ones, it's
not good. But if you're rude every time, then it
becomes a trend, then it becomes who you are. Then
(09:42):
people start to talk about it. So if the overwhelming
noise of the overwhelming conversation is that I have worked
with Blake on a TV show, I've worked with her here.
I've worked with her there and it was in a
very good experience. And you hear that over and over
and over again again, you're gonna start believing it. Okay,
(10:02):
this made me sort of giggle. I like Juliana Hauff.
She was gonna be the next Britney Spears for a moment.
Remember when she had a music career, she was making movies.
She exploded from Dancing with the Stars. While she's back
out there now doing more interviews, and I can't get enough.
She's talking about who shouldn't have won Dancing with the Stars. Ooh,
so the professional dancer. She was on Andy Cohen's show
(10:25):
Watch What Happens and she was asked who should not
have won this legendary show, and she said, it's Bobby Bones,
who won season twenty seven of the beloved dance competition.
And so she said she has to agree Bobby Bones
should not have won. Now, Bobby is a radio personality.
(10:46):
I met him as a really nice guy. He won
season twenty seven along with pro dancer Shanna Burgess in
two eighteen. That's the yeah, two thousand and eighteen. Now,
at the time, there was a lot of debate because
he wasn't the most skillful dancer, and he acknowledged that,
but he also acknowledged the power of his fan base
(11:08):
and said that is why he ultimately ultimately won. Now, Juliana,
she's a good person. She also was quick to praise Bones.
So she said he shouldn't have won on his dancing skills,
but for his great fans and his popularity, and they
all voted. That's why he won. Now he should note
as well that after after he won, they changed the
(11:30):
rules of the show. They changed the voting rules after
Bobby Bones. People on the show call it the Bobby
Bones rule, and so that's a testament to his impact
on the show. Now Bobby has clapped back at Juliana
half He's done it in a funny way, crowning himself
the greatest champion. He shared an Instagram video and he
(11:50):
said I was the worst dancer, he admitted with a grin,
and he said I take pride in that. He said, now,
I tried as hard as anyone in the history of
the show, but I can't dance now and couldn't dance then.
He did make jokes though, saying that we took down
the evil empire of dance of which there's no evil
(12:12):
and there's no empire because it was you and me,
we did it together. And the greatest champion ever, he said, quote,
I didn't say I was the greatest dancer ever, but
the greatest champion ever because I'm a man of the people.
I am the man that the people selected it did. Now,
remember this, it's not a dance show. It's a popularity show.
(12:34):
It's a personality show. The people that go on this
show need huge fan basism. Bobby because he's so big
in the country world. He's like the Howard Stern of country.
He got a lot of the country singers, a lot
of those really talented singers carry underwoods, the people who
knew what it was like to be on a competition show.
He got them to support him and to rally their
(12:55):
fans too, and that's why he won because people voted
fair and square. Then the news But Bobby, I think
I agree with you. Maybe still not the best answer,
but still the best champion. We have a new update
on Ben Affleck. He's very focused at the moment on
preparing his daughter Violet for college amid all the marital
strain with Jennifer Lopez. They're still together. I'm told they're talking.
(13:18):
They are talking again. There's reports they'd stop talking. They
are talking. He's involved in her life, she's involved in his.
Still they're just not living together. But they are not
divorced yet and told there are no plans to design
the divorce papers anytime soon. And at the moment, Ben
just turned fifty two. Jen turned up on his birthday.
She went to his house, so that's a good sign.
She spent about five hours there. Jennifer Gardner was there too,
(13:39):
not at the same time. We saw the kids there.
And now his eldest daughter, Violet is off to college.
She's going to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, or
have fancy sources are telling People magazine. Ben is very
focused on getting Violet ready for the move. He also
added that this is a huge deal for the whole
family and they're really excited in sharing this together. Ben
(14:02):
shares violence along with Sarahina who's fifteen, and Samuel with
his ex wife Jennifer Gardner, and they're juggling all these
responsibilities under a very very public eye. So we're all
talking about his marriage. But what Ben is focusing on
is his daughter. Quickly before we get a break. This
story broke my heart in the most tragic way and
(14:22):
then the most beautiful way too. Taylor Swift invited girls
involved in the tragic stabbing to a magical night backstage
at her Heiress tour in London. So during her concert
at Wembley Stadium sold out on August fifteenth, the thirty
four year old pop star extended a heartfelt invitation to
(14:43):
two children who were involved in the deadly stabbing and
a Swift themed yoga class in England. The girls, along
with their family were treated to special backstage experiences and
even a photograph with Taylor Swift. One of the mom's
post how grateful they were to Taylor and her mother
Andrea for quote making the most magical night possible for us,
(15:08):
A big thank you. Oh it's so beautiful and tragic.
Taylor always does the right thing, and she does it
without any publicity, any attention. If the girls, if their
moms had not spoken out about this, Taylor wouldn't have
said anything. Doing the right thing when nobody is watching
makes you really the right person. Okay, We're going to
take a quick break and we will be right back.
(15:32):
Welcome back to the naughty but nice on your hipst
rab shooter. Hey, let's get to the polls. No poll today,
no new poll, but this is the part of our
show where we always give you the results of our
last poll. So yesterday we talked about Meghan Markle reportedly
wanting to attend the convention in Chicago, but she wasn't invited.
Our question was, would Meghan's endorsement of a political party
(15:56):
a person in politics make a difference. Let's have a look.
Twenty percent said yes, So I don't think this is
a dig at Megan. Here, a lot of people get
really tired of celebrities and politics. I say it's their right.
They're Americans. I'm allowed to talk about politics if I
want to, I choose not to, But if you want to,
I get it. I have friends who are very vocal
(16:17):
about politics, some who are much more private than me.
But if you're a celebrity and you want to talk
about this, you have as much right as anybody else.
But it can turn some some people off. And so
here the question is not whether it would turn you off,
but do you even care? No, I don't. I make
my own mind up. I look at the policies, I
(16:37):
look at what's going to help my my family, my life,
my friends, the world. What's gonna help my sisters, what's
going to help people that I need some help? And
so look at the issues, not the people who endorse them.
I agree with you noughties. There's no poll today, but
we will be back tomorrow with a new pole. Okay,
(16:58):
let's do the nicest of the day, and it says
of the days. Megan markle for speaking Spanish during an
empowerment forum in Columbia. So she showed off her impressive
Spanish speaking skills during a conversation. She was there with
her husband, Prince Harry, and they were talking about women's empowerment.
So she stole the show. When she took the stage,
(17:19):
she removed her ear piece and she started talking directly
to the crowd in Spanish. So Harry and Meghan were
wearing earpieces so everything could be translated into English. However,
Meghan didn't need it. She understood the Spanish and she
could speak in Spanish. She could reply in Spanish. The
crowd went crazy when she did this. This isn't the
first time that Meghan has impressed with her Spanish. Earlier
(17:43):
on their Columbia trip, she and Harry engaged with some
local kindergod and children, and she spoke to the kids
in their native language. Now a lot of people don't
know this, but Meghan is fluent in Spanish, and this
comes from her time in turning at the US Embassy
in Buenosarres, Argentina. She also spent some time studying aboard
(18:04):
in Madrid, Spain, so this explains her fabulous Spanish. It's interesting,
isn't it. I wish I'd spoken of the language. It's
my one regret, or one of my regrets. Let's say
that I'd loved a bit. Maybe I'll take up that beliitz?
Is that what it's called? That thing you do online?
I'll let you know. Okay, let's do our naughtiest the day, naughty, naughty, naughty.
Prince William does not want Harry at his coronation, so
(18:28):
sources talking to the Sunday Times, that's a very respectable
newspaper in London, saying that Harry and William are in
a really bad place. And now William has decided that
he does not want his brother there to see him crowned.
So when Charles passes, he's seventy five years old. This ceremony,
(18:48):
the coronation is going to look very, very different. The
most noticeable difference is that Harry will not be there.
The report highlighted these two have not spoken in two years.
Two years. Not only is he estranged from his brother,
he is also now estranged from King Charles, who ascended
the throne after Queen Elizabeth died in twenty twenty two.
(19:10):
So as to say the following quote, the problem for
the king and other members of the family is they
worry that if they have a chat with Harry, it
will appear in his book Volume two spare volume two.
How could you regain the trust? I don't think Harry
ever can Oh. Hey, let's end with the moment of Rob.
(19:31):
We got a Robbie Gota. Robi, you got to Robie
Gota Rob to day, we have a quote from Mega
Markle that really stopped me in my tracks. I love
this quote. We just need to be kinder to ourselves.
If we treat ourselves the way we treated our best friend,
can you imagine how much better off we would be?
I talk to myself in a way that I would
(19:53):
never speak to somebody I love. We've all been guilty
of this. My rule is if I wouldn't say it
to somebody I loved, then I won't say it to myself. Hey,
that is it for today, noughties. Thank you so much
for listening to the Naughty but Nice with Robin Nortiz Show.
You were the co host today. Don't you miss mister
(20:14):
I love her. She's one of my best friends. I
love her. I miss her. I hope you're having a
marvelous time in La. I know you are listening, and
I can't wait for you to come back and we
can get a drink. Don't forget to subscribe on the
iHeartRadio app or Apple podcast or wherever you listen. Leave
us a review if you can. They really do help.
And remember altogether. Now, if you're going to be naughty,
you've got to be a jass. Take care of everybody.
(20:38):
It's not even nice with rom
