Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hello, we want to welcome to the New Orleans Pelicans Podcast,
official podcast.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Of your New Orleans Pelicans.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
As we get into the final here stages, Jimi Canoff
Repelicans dot Com of our end of the season player reviews,
player profiles, wud like to call them. It's interesting because
we started with starters, we started with reserves, and this
week we've been focusing on rookies and their impacts. They've
made it and obviously when you have a season where
there's a lots of injuries, well you know, some of
(01:02):
those players get a chance to play. Carlo nack ofvi It,
he's a player where you look at in Summer League.
You were there with me with Aaron Summers. We call
those early games. What was the expectation level for Carlo
coming into this season based off of you know, gets
drafted since the receives Birmingham, et cetera.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
Honestly, I wasn't sure because I think a lot of
it depended on the situation with the center position as
far as what was going to develop as far as
the depth chart went. I thought going into training camp
that he had an opportunity to maybe crack the rotation.
As it turned out, that didn't really happen until January.
The end of January, he played a significant amount of
(01:43):
minutes against the Celtics in a game that he played
really well, had a solid performance, and from that point
on he was in the rotation and in the mix
for the rest of the season. But I mean he
he played a good amount. It just took a few
months for him to get it out there in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
No doubt when you look at him getting those menutes
in some dad, look, I can just close my eyes.
And I'm not a statistician or an analyst, but hey,
I love the fact that they can play about the
rim a couple of block shots and stuff seemed to
figure out and how to play with others.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
Do you have some stats or fun facts about him?
Speaker 6 (02:12):
It's interesting, you know.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
We talked to John Deschazer about him. We go through
some different numbers and some different developments that happened from
Carlo's rookie season that showed that he was a very
helpful contributor. I thought, you know, in addition to Eve
mecI that we talked about yesterday and then Antonio Reeves tomorrow,
these are three really good stories that took place. Kind
of silver linings. But I think as much as my
(02:34):
positive remembrance of Carlo's rookie season was, I think when
you look at some of the other numbers and you
dig a little bit deeper, I think it was actually
even more impressive than I thought about. I mean, here's
a few things. He was second on the team in
rebounds per thirty six minutes at nine point five. He
led the team in field goal percentage at fifty seven
point four. Also led the team in true shooting percentage
(02:56):
at sixty three point nine, which is a little bit
of a deeper analyst number, but basically, what true shooting
percentage measures is all of the aspects of shooting, whether
it's you know, two pointers, three pointers, free throws, and
you take that all together and you put that into
one number. So that was really good that he did that.
As well because he did take some three pointers. It
wasn't like all of his shots were right at the basket,
(03:19):
and his field goal percentage was high because he was
just dunking and shooting layups. I mean, he did show
a nice touch on his jump shot and just his
ability to score a little bit further away from the basket,
which is also encouraging and something that you don't always
see from, you know, rookies at the beginning of their career.
And then lastly, he had he led the team in
block percentage as well. He blocked five percent of the
(03:41):
two point shots by opponents in the minutes that he
was on the floor. So, I mean, we talked about
eve Mesi being really impressive in shot blocking, but Carlo
in a lot of ways was right in that range
as far as just the amount of time that he
was on the floor, how much he was able to
block shots and just be kind of a rim protector.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well, John de chaz, as you mentioned, radio analysts for
the Pelicans radio network sits in with this now to
kind of go over some of the things that stood
out to him.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
Here's the conversation.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
All right, we welcome back mister Jean de Chazer, Carlo Matkovich,
as we could tell, you're a player profile my due.
So let's go almost a year ago, Jamike Knoffer, you
and I and Aaron Summers were in Vegas Summer League.
Lots of attention obviously for Jordan Hawkins, what we want
to see him sort of dow. Do you remember as
we started the games on what you thought what you
(04:30):
wanted to see from Carlo Makovich?
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Then yeah, I mean that actually wasn't even the first
Summer League that he's played for the Pelicans, so I
was just looking forward to him making another step in
his progression. And I think I forget who the opponent was,
It doesn't really matter that much to this discussion, but
he had he had one game where he had almost
thirty points and just did everything, and it was one
of those moments where I was like, I really like
(04:52):
what I see, and even if it's summer league competition,
you could see some of the things that he's added
to his game.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
As you got ready for the upcoming season, I mean, look,
Murray gets traded for the Pals. Where was your idea
of a guy like a Carlo Matkovic where there were a.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Lot of fans, you know, kind of expecting it.
Speaker 7 (05:10):
You know, well, they were going crazy after that off
that summer league game the gym's talking about, I think.
But and the reason I don't judge a whole lot
of summer league is because summer League it's kind of
sort of like prison ball. I mean, those dudes are
out there killing each other, and I mean, you know,
you know you can fou Yeah, you don't found I mean,
you don't foul out. And I mean, so those guys
are out there just you know, and especially if it's
(05:31):
a guy who who is a draft pick playing against
guys who are who are free agents or whatever, and
those guys really go.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
After draft picks like hard.
Speaker 7 (05:40):
And so I don't judge a lot off of Now,
what I will say about that, about that, you know
that that Summer League game of lore is that you
saw a lot of athleticism with him, and you saw
some things that you know, he looked twitchy, and so
that's the kind of stuff you look at and you say,
you know what, he he can probably play in the
(06:00):
NBA in the right situation. Now, you got you know,
everything is about opportunity, But just say, you know what,
he's athletic enough, and he's big enough to wear you
know what, I wouldn't mind seeing what he could actually
do in an NBA game. And so that's where you
start building the enthusiasm from, because it's like, Okay, you
got a six' ten dude who's got some bounce in you,
KNOW i don't even know if he can consistently, shoot
(06:21):
but he's got some bounce to him and some, athleticism
and that's something you can work.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
WITH i should add too, THAT i mean part of
WHAT i saw from that, game that one performance he
had twenty, eight twenty nine. Points it wasn't just The
it wasn't just that he had a bunch of. STATS i,
mean we see guys do that in the summer league
and it doesn't really matter to. Me WHAT i liked
the most was the array of different ways that he
was productive in that. Game he showed some really good,
footwork he showed some athleticism where he was finishing in the,
(06:46):
lane which we saw carry over to the REAL nba.
Season it was just the fact that he checked a
bunch of different boxes and he was able to be
a productive player offensively in so many different. Ways that
was the part that was most encourage to, me not
just that he just put up some stats in Summer,
league which a lot of guys do and then you
never hear from them.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
AGAIN i think that's one of the things that really
stood out to. Me so as we look At carlow's,
season it is surprisingly. GOOD a word or a phrase
is sort of, describing LIKE i don't know what the
expectation level was by his team or. Not then you
had the injuries and all those. Things but to your,
POINT i remember playing above the. RIM i remember him
(07:26):
contributing in a lot of different ways to the point
where we're, like, hey this guy's kind of a key
component in part in.
Speaker 7 (07:31):
There huh well, YEAH i mean think about. It you
begin the season and you got Daniel, tye and you
got eve Me.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
C and you have you, know Maybe.
Speaker 7 (07:39):
Jr and so you got a rotation of bigs that
you if you're The, pelicans you feel, like, okay we
we kind of have established what we. Want, well now you,
know Daniel tye doesn't play quite as well as you
hoped and Eve mesey jumps off the. Page so now you,
know you trade Daniel tye and you've got eve Me
c and you, know now you're looking around and kind
(08:01):
OF i don't want to say scrounging, around but you
got This macovich guy who who's in THE G league
and he's playing, well and you, say, okay let's let's
bring him. Up and look when he gets into THE,
nba he kind of looks like you would expect a
rookie to. Look he looks a little bit out of.
Place the game looks a little bit fast for. Him
you though he's playing in THE G, league but the
(08:22):
game looks a little bit fast for. Him it looks
a little athletic for. Him and then you know he
gets a taste of, it AND i don't want to
say a switch, flip but it's almost like he, said
you know, WHAT i can play.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
HERE i can do.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
This and so then you see, him you, know get
a little bit more consistent. Minutes now he you, know
then obviously there's still things he's got to work, on
but you see him a fearlessness in. Him like the
THING i love about him the most is you, know
when he's going to the, rack he's going in there
to dunk.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
It he ain't fooling.
Speaker 7 (08:57):
Around he don't give an f who's under, there he's
going in to dunk it and he's, attacking AND i
LIKED i like that about. Him you, know he's a
guy who and you need that out of that position
because you can't be playing four on five. Offensively you
need a scoring threat at that at that center. Position
and that's one of those THINGS i think Even meets
he's gonna, develop But mackovich kind of already has it
(09:19):
because he you, know he can make corner, three he
can shoot threes. Already but he's a guy who when
you get him in the, paint he's not necessarily looking
to kick it out at the. Time he's looking at
the rim sometimes to, Say, OKAY i you, KNOW i
can finish right here and not just the. FLOATER i
can go in AND i can do some damage right.
Here and so that's the THING i really like about.
Him and that's one of the things THAT i saw
him play a couple of. Times AND i remember telling
(09:41):
graph my radio Partner Todd. GRAFFANINI i, said you, know,
LOOK i, Said, CARLO i Said carlo can, play and
so he was, like, yeah, YEAH i was like, no, no,
No carlo can. Play And carlo really looks like a
guy Who AND i ain't talking about you, know eleventh,
Guy And i'm talking about a guy who belie, loongs
who belongs in the, rotation a guy who who blocks,
(10:04):
shots who, rebounds and who. Scores and he'll learn defensively
because he you, know he got lost a few times
and he heard about it on the, Bench i'm sure
a few. Times but he's a guy who who who
has a learning. Curve but he's got some things that
you can't. Teach you can't teach, athleticism you can't teach
(10:24):
a guy to be you, know a guy either is
kind of aggressive or he's. Not and you always hear these,
guys you, know oh he's a, dog he's everybody need no,
dog stop. It but But carlo's got some of that
in and where you, know to, me when you're talking
about a, dog it's a guy who, SAYS i don't
care who's out, here AND i don't care Who i'm
out here. With i'm capable of doing my, thing and
(10:45):
WHEN i do, It i'm going to do it aggressively
And i'm not going to shy.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Away and he looks like that kind of.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Guy is that Why coach sometimes got on him as
much as LIKE i close my eyes AND i, think
if there's a player this season where he was coached
during the game while he it Was carlo by. Possession sometimes,
yeah BECAUSE i MEAN i THINK i think they see
the potential in, it BECAUSE i MEAN i.
Speaker 7 (11:06):
DON'T i don't, know and Maybe i'm going too far,
here but he looks, like LIKE i, said maybe a
top six to seven guy in the. Rotation he's a
guy who if he's got to start a string of,
GAMES i Don't if he learns how to not, file
he can help you a lot because, again you see
guys get beat, Defensively carlo doesn't give. Up he gonna
(11:28):
block the shot at the, Rim he's gonna catch you
off the. Glass he's a guy who's got a lot
to work with and so now you just have to
increase his knowledge of the game because he showed a
lot down the stretch where you were, like this, GUY
i understand The pelicans have you, know eighteen, nineteen twenty
twenty one, Wins but this is a guy who you
(11:48):
look forward to seeing him in the future because it's
not just the, production it's it's the way he looked
and the confidence he.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Gained he'll come back next.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
SEASON i, mean he's got to feel, like you, know
not the big, dog but he's got to feel like
he's a fit with whatever rotation goes on the floor
because he doesn't need the ball to. Score you, know
you don't have to run plays for. Him he's gonna
he's gonna be able to do.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
That he's.
Speaker 7 (12:12):
Not he's gonna he's gonna improve as a. Defender but
even right, now he's got the necessary gene to where he'll,
hustle he's going for block, shots he'll, REBOUND i, mean
and he's he's got a three pointer from the. Corner
he's gonna hopefully develop, that you, know to the perimeters
and the, key and so he's got a lot of
things that you like that you can work. With and
(12:32):
he's six.', ten.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Yeah you know when when you, talk about, you know
where he fits in a rotation, long term, you know
he might be, seventh man sixth man on. A team
i feel like backup center IN the nba has become
a little bit like backup point guard in terms of
there's fewer and fewer teams that even. Play centers so
the backup center role in a lot of cases has become, Almost,
like okay go out there for ten fifteen minutes and don't.
(12:55):
Hurt US but i think the thing that is Exciting
about carlo is that he's so much more. Than that
he's not just gonna be a guy that can just
eat up some minutes and, you know just don't don't
mess don't mess. Things up he's, you know all the
different positive traits that we we've already. Talked about one
of the, THINGS too i wanted TO before i go,
INTO pelistats i wanted to back up for a second
and talk ABOUT is i think It was graph that
(13:18):
told us how much Of a carlo guy?
Speaker 6 (13:20):
You ARE and i just wanted.
Speaker 7 (13:22):
TO know i pick a guy every year, because folks
you know the, Full disclosure nase was. My dude nase
was my dude for. Several YEARS and i, was like you,
know What.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
When naji, is gone we're gonna. Miss, him, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
Right so, you, know now every now AND then i
do pick a guy just to kind Of. Agitate graph so, you,
know SO and i won't name the name for the
GUYS that i picked to, agitate HIM but. I DID
but I was i Was a, nasey Guy and I'm
and I'm a. Carlo guy i'm A big. CARLO guy i.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
LIKE it i.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
Like it let's go into a couple of stats and
you can tell me which one of these you like.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
The most first number is one.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Point nine that's how many blocks per thirty six Minutes
that carlo had. This season he also had a streak
of ten straight games with at least, one block even
though During that spanning only started two of those games
and only played thirty minutes or more once out of.
Those ten so just an example of what his shot.
Blocking was and then the, second NUMBER which i know
is a Number that gus is, gonna like. Is forty
(14:23):
and that's how many Dunks that carlo had in seven
hundred and ninety. One, minutes now just to give kind
of context, or comparison he had one more dunk this
Season Than zion. Williamson did zion had, Thirty nine carlo.
Had forty and they almost played almost Exactly this they
played roughly the same amount. Of minutes zion played eight to,
Fifty seven carlo played seven to. Ninety One so carlo
(14:44):
had one more dunk in sixty six fewer Minutes than.
Zion did Also Via, basketball Reference eve mesi led the
team with one hundred.
Speaker 6 (14:52):
And sixteen so those are the. Two numbers one point nine.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Blocks per thirty six minutes and the forty Dunks that
carlo had.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
THIS seas i like the.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Dunks number and here's my. Editorial Comment If elfred peyton
plays the whole season with With with, Carlo mcavi carlo
has probably two hundred.
Speaker 6 (15:08):
Dunks because he's.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
The guy he's, a guy because you he's a guy
who who's he's he's a, lob threat, you know and
if you got a point guard who can throw a,
decent lib he's gonna go and, get it and he'll
get it in traffic and he'll get it when guys
are hanging. ON him, i mean he's one of. Those
guys and that's one of the things again that THE
thing i like about him is he's so aggressive and
he attacks the rim and those are things THAT again
(15:34):
i don't know if necessarily everybody has, that gene but
he's got a certain hunger. To him now that's the
hunger that you hope stays with him always because he's.
A guy, RIGHT now, i think, you know look at.
THE rotations I think i think you can put him
on the floor.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
With e mesi for.
Speaker 7 (15:49):
Several minutes, you know he can space the floor a.
Little bit you can put him on the Floor, with zion,
you know for minutes because he's a guy who can
play on the Perimeter while zion operates. Around them you
can put them on the floor without either one of
those guys because he can do a little bit, of
both and you can buy some minutes and buy. Some
time and as, you mentioned a backup center IN the
nba becomes a valuable commodity because you're looking for a
(16:12):
guy who's who's not necessarily gonna.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Hurt you and in a.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
Lot, OF instances I think carlo, helps you not just doesn't,
hurt you but he helps you in those situations because
when he's playing against somebody who's not a front line
opponent from the, other team, you know he can really create.
Some havoc he's a guy who, you know you look
around and he's he's hanging on the rim three four
times and, it's, like, oh okay and, you know now
(16:37):
you didn't mention. The blocks and the thing about, THAT is,
i like is a lot of those were not? His,
guy yeah, He's, hoping yeah he's helping and he's catching
guys who are? You know that's that's the the situation where, you,
say okay my teammate needs me, to help and. He's
ROTATING and i love to see that because guys aren't just,
saying okay that's not. My responsibility he got beat and
(16:58):
that's his responsibility and give up. A Layup and, carlos, said,
no, no no my Responsibility is i'm supposed to protect. The
RIM now i gotta trust that my teammates are gonna
look out for ME once i. Rotate Over but i'm
gonna rotate Over and i'm. Gonna help and so a
lot of times in this league you see guys who, You,
know well he didn't rotate over because he didn't want
(17:18):
to leave. His, guy well you, KNOW what i understand
who you, Got it but you're giving up.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
A layup you got.
Speaker 7 (17:25):
To rotate, you know you can't just, Say well i'm guarding.
My guy, well, no, no your responsibility changes when you see.
That opening and so now you got to be willing,
to help and you got to be willing to cover
your teammates behind because that's your responsibility as A big
AND so i like that part.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
About HIM but i.
Speaker 7 (17:44):
Love love that he gets to the remedy's DUNCAN and,
i mean you know that that's THE stat i did
not know that he had one more dunk design in.
Less minutes and, of course, you know again he's a
he's a guy who when.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
He says, to pick, you know you can look from
the roll to. The rim you just throw it.
Speaker 7 (18:01):
Up high and he's athletic enough to where he can go.
GET him, i mean it's not just it doesn't have to.
Be perfect, you know he ain't me where you got
to just. Throw it, you know he can go and get,
it up, you know up somewhere in. The SQUARE and
i love that.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
About it what do you think is the thing or
a couple of things that you want to see from
him kind of next season when we get into the
next in the training camp and in the beginning of,
the season what are certain things that you want to
see him improve. The most is it just the cutting
down on? The fouling is it just the three? Point
shooting what do you think is the thing that you
would kind.
Speaker 7 (18:32):
Of, target yeah he's gonna have to learn how to defend,
without fouling because he's he he'll learn that or we're.
Learning that he's he's, pretty valuable so he needs to
be on. The floor so you got to cut down
on the unnecessary. Silly files you got to be able
to kind of eliminate those from the game or or
not not commit nearly as many. OF them i want
to see him be a little bit more aggressive in
(18:52):
the post on the catch where, you know if you
catch it in, THE paint i want To see i'd
love to see him look at the rim all the,
time time every time before you're looking to kick it
to the corner for three. Or whatever, YOU know i
want to see him again force the defense to have to,
guard everybody because when you, do that you send him
out a little bit and hopefully you create. More opportunities
(19:14):
but he's capable of making. The floater he's he's got,
the jumper so now can he make up of eight
and eight foot jumper instead of, you know the corner three,
or whatever so you can be more of a. Threat
there and so i'd like to see him, do that
and then, you know hopefully as he goes along he
learns the defensive system at a little, bit better because,
YOU know i don't like to see the guy get
(19:35):
fussed at as, much.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
Defensively and that's where.
Speaker 7 (19:38):
Really he was getting chewed out the most is defensively
when something happened and they'd, be like, hey man you
know what's going on?
Speaker 3 (19:45):
With you and, You know i'm just he's trying to.
Speaker 7 (19:47):
Explain it but he didn't carry out, his responsibility and
so you want to see him become a little bit
more familiar, with it and hopefully as he, goes along
you get the familiarity defensively and you don't commit as
many as many files because you're out of position.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
In those kinds. Of things he's gotta be a little
bit better and a little bit cleaner with.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
HIS footwork i think that's the thing that stands out, to,
ME right i mean THAT'S why i ask.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
YOU that i think by no means on the. Same
Level but i'm a little.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
League coach right to, my kid there's a kid or
two on, My team i'm, LIKE this i need. This
guy he can be, a starter he can make all,
the throws but sometimes he's literally looking at the clouds
or he's turning his hand like. Let's go, You know
but you tend to coach harder the kids that you
probably know can really do it and have.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
That right if that makes. Any, SENSE yeah, i mean.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
It happens.
Speaker 7 (20:32):
It happens the kids who have the most ability are, the,
ones generally and that's most ports that you probably are,
hardest on or maybe should be, hardest on, because, there's
yeah there's something there that you see and, you, say
okay this can.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Be.
Speaker 7 (20:50):
Developed now not every kid is on, that level and
so there are some kids who, you know chasing butterflies and, you're,
like well that's just kind of, you know that's Just.
Little jenny that's who, he is that's where, he is and, you,
know hey we.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Just we'll live.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
With that but if you Got little johnny who looks
like he can be, a star, you're, like, HEY man
i need you to pay Attention because i'm gonna need
you to help Out when jimmy's out here.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
CHASING butterflies i need you to go chase down.
Speaker 7 (21:13):
The, ball so, you know it's one of those situations where,
you know you Look at carlo and, you're, saying man,
You Know coach green's being kind of hard. On him
and then, you're like, you, know okay you're hard on
him because there are expectations because you see something in
him that is worth coaching up and worth, you know
holding him accountable to because you want to see him eliminate.
Those mistakes and once he eliminates, those mistakes his effectiveness.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Will jump more and more. And, more well there's.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Two things we wrap up here that stand out to
Me that i'm excited about. Next year day's got going.
For him JIMMY and i had a chance to talk
to him for the podcast on a one. ON one
i think he is Motivated, in. Hungary right he talked
about his opportunity and chance out of his country to
come play IN, the nba so that's gonna.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Help him the.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Other Heard joe dumar slat, out saying if you don't,
have BIGS and i think he even said it on his,
own podcast it'll be a. Layup line so you have
somebody now in charge of the team that values what you,
just said, blocking shots being there and.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Being a deterrent in.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
The paint but it also goes back to why they
were coaching so, much SO so i think he's got a.
Spot here he's got an opportunity to really do well
because you've got those two things going and.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
The beauty is he got a really really.
Speaker 7 (22:27):
Good taste of it this, past season so now, he understands,
you know what IT is i need to do AND
how i need to. Do it but more, than that
you taste some success along the, Way too so, you see,
Okay AGAIN like, I said i don't know if a
switch flip, or what but he was like you could
see almost where he, WAS like i can play in,
this LEAGUE and i cannot just play and not just,
(22:50):
have MINUTES but i can be effective in. THOSE minutes i,
CAN score i can rebound like, block SHOTS and i
can do it at a level that's that's. Pretty high
and now you see him get you know a little
bit more minutes down, the stretch and you expand out and, you,
say okay this is the. Guy again he, you know
maybe he, doesn't start, but boy you, know what he
(23:10):
can play twenty two to twenty. Three minutes, you know
if you're flipping back and forth between center and, power
forward he can give you some minutes and he can
give you some valuable minutes and he can.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
PLAY something, i mean he can really play, the game.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
All right John the shades are analysts For The pelicans
radio network is always appreciate the. Time serving before you,
know it we'll be, talking.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
Lottery draft and. Training camp absolutely Around the corners.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Training Camp IT'S trillia's.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Reali exactly and for you, football too very busy h
summer and spring here.
Speaker 5 (23:39):
As well, thank, YOU man i appreciate.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Your time, Thanks, Going.
Speaker 5 (23:41):
Thanks thanks it's ALWAYS to jd who has so much
fun doing.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Those calls and, You, know JIM like, i said it
it's a season, that's. STUCK right, i mean you would
have liked it to gone a, certain way but there were, some.
MOMENTS man i can Still hear john's voice and grass
voice to.
Speaker 5 (23:55):
Something that carlo did that does get.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
You excited and this isn't us trying to, you know read. A,
script hey make sure we. Talk, POSITIVELY no i mean
they were those were, legit, Things RIGHT and i think
when you look at it player, like him is it
fair to say part of that early evaluation is are
YOU an?
Speaker 5 (24:13):
Nba? Player?
Speaker 4 (24:14):
RIGHT yeah i think he definitely showed that. He is
I'm really i'm encouraged by the fact that he did
what he did as, a ROOKIE but i know that
he has more room. To IMPROVE and, i mean to,
be honest. WITH you i think what he showed in
the what was it forty two games that he played
this season seven starts. To me he showed that he's
already at the level of a backup center that you
(24:35):
can count on and that you can be. Happy with
but now it's about in his second season, going forward
just making more improvements and making more strides so that
he becomes, YOU know i think he has a chance
to become one of the better back up front court
players in the league if he keeps Developing a jamaike.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
N offer as we Record this wednesday podcast Here on,
MAY seventh i gotta, tell you have you been losing
a little sleep having to stay up late and watch
all of these.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Playoff games i'll tell you it's been, nice though because
the home teams have been in, central times so we
haven't had as many, you know nine. O'clock starts the
games have been ended a little. Bit earlier but, BUT
yeah i mean it's been awesome. So far the second
round has. BEEN incredible i can't believe the road teams
are five and zero. Right, now YEAH and i the first,
time ever by, the way yeah saw that. First, round,
yep yep that there's never been a case in the
(25:25):
second round in the conference semi finals where game one
has been in every series has been won by the,
road team And obviously indiana now has, two wins so
that accounts for that fifth. ROAD win, I mean I'm
just i'm just SHOCKED by, i know we talked about
this a little Bit, on monday kind of going into
a lot of. These series just the way That The
Indiana cleveland's game, two ended Where the pacers that was
(25:49):
a second time in this playoffs that they overcame a
seven point deficit in the last forty seconds of, a
game and apparently that's happened only a handful of times
in the last twenty something, thirty years and they're now they've,
done it now done it twice in the span of about.
A week and then just the way That THE denver
okc game ended, as well where, YOU know i think reasonably, so,
(26:11):
okay see was, heavily favored and then to See the
nuggets pull that. Game out there was so many times
And Another nick, celtics too And. Then, nuggets, okay see
both of, those games there were so many TIMES where i,
was Like the knicks have, no chance this game's, over
right and Then, the nuggets this, game's Over the nuggets have,
no chance and they both ended up coming back. To
win and then the same thing With the pacers Game,
(26:32):
on tuesday where, it's, like yeah, they're done there's no
way they can pull. This, OUT so, i mean it's
been it's been stunning what's happened. So far i'm really
curious to see over the rest of the series whether
some of these underdogs can carry this through or whether
it was just a great start and some of these Favorites,
like cleveland okay See and boston kind of restore order,
and say, you know there's a reason why we won
(26:54):
sixty plus games and we're the. Better team but it's
any chance that the second would be kind of blah
and that some of these favorites would just. Roll through
it seems like it's. Already gone what's.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Crazy to ME is i gotta ask you real quick
about one of, those games and you mentioned it One.
On monday because my dad's, old, school, right like he'll
text me During a pels game where you know they're
struggling from beyond the arc and miss the three in the,
first goal stop shooting. THE threes i try to explain
them every GAME and i love them The death Right and, i'm,
like look THAT'S today's, i know get.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
A bye i.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
HEAR you I mean i can hear, RIGHT now Jd, And,
todd well you passed up a layup to pass into
the corner for a three point.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
At tenth that's.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Today's game We can that's a whole nother podcast if.
It Works, but JIM when i go fifteen of sixty
to you sixty, MISSED three i mean not sixteen, to
threes sixty attempts from beyond the arc and only make
fifteen and at the end of the game that you're
just Jacking up, seanson'm like get, one bucket get. Two Buckets, jalen,
(27:57):
brown right didn he kind of say we need to
try something different and stuff.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Like that the problem is is if you play a
certain way all season and then not just as a
team but, AS individuals i feel like the attitude is, always,
like well we're struggling, so far we're slumping in the
first two or three quarters of, this game but it's gonna.
Turn around so you don't you never you never really stop.
SHOOTING threes i think some of these teams are so
(28:23):
used to. Doing THAT so, I mean i'll be curious,
to see because if you think, About it boston did
The same they played the same exact way last season.
As well they might be shooting them with a few
more threes this season than they did, last YEAR but
i don't think it's that big of. A difference and
last year they won, the CHAMPIONSHIP so i think they would, tell, you,
like yeah we're gonna have nights where we shoot fifteen.
For sixty maybe hopefully not, too many considering that was
(28:44):
THE record i guess for the most missed threes in
a playoff game in the history of.
Speaker 6 (28:47):
The LEAGUE but i think.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
WE'LL see, I mean i've said many times in the,
regular season the analytics of shooting threes makes sense because
the math just works over eighty two.
Speaker 6 (28:59):
Games sample but will we see a team get burned.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
By overly reliance on the three point shot in a
playoff series where they have two or three really terrible
knights at the worst, possible time and then they lose
one another game and they're. SEASON'S over i think that'll
be something. TO monitor, i mean If, your BOSTON if
i was them in your glass half full with your
green goggles And your leprechaun. Suit on you, WOULD say,
(29:25):
i mean look at the results of what's happened last,
few years and they probably still should have won that
game if you think. About IT but i, don't know.
WE'LL see, i mean we saw this Happen In minnesota
game One Against, golden state which we didn't even talk.
About yet they were something like five to thirty on.
Three pointers so there's another Example of but we've talked
(29:45):
about this a lot throughout the season the last couple.
OF years, i mean the three point shot is so
is such a huge part of the offense for so
many different times that you can lose games.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
Just based on that or win games just based.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
On that and so unfortunately for some of, these teams
happened at the worst, Possible time game one at home
of a, playoff series where you just cannot make, a
three and that's a huge reason why you lose.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
The game it's not to when you look, at it
Look that pacers cav series is that that's a, fun
team And that halliburton play And Very reggie miller like
where they score missed the free throw and, get it,
AND man I Mean donovan.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Mitchell had forty.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
Forty plus, it's like so they of all the teams that,
a favorite feeling the most funnable to me, because like
if you can't win at home, like.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
That, and yeah going down two is.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
The brutal the only thing.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
THOUGH too i mean, another, thing unfortunately this is a
common theme IN the nba, right now is we learned
unfortunately in a. Harsh way they also have injuries at
the worst. Possible, time now all of, A Sudden darius garland,
Is Out evan mobley didn't Play in. Game two they
have a couple other injuries as well that. Are key
so it's like the team that they had that won
sixty four games and it's not on, the court right
(30:56):
they don't have it, right now so you see the results.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
Of that and even with all, that said they still
should have won.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Game TOO it's i just cannot believe some of the
combination of events that are happening in the last thirty
seconds to a minute of some of these playoff games
that are totally flipping.
Speaker 6 (31:10):
The OUTCOME but, i.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Mean did YOU have ptsd when they couldn't inbound the
ball and turn.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
Out to be. A steal it, was, Unbelievable, right.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
Yeah it was A terrible max strews through. A tear
i have no idea what happened.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
On that you're up three with twenty four seconds, to
go twenty, seven seconds they're going to. Follow You the
pacers are gonna, follow right so you're gonna go to
the free, throw line possible to make it a five
point game for. The, worst still you're going to get
the free, throw line and then, you don't and then
they make a bucket and it's just it's unreal what
(31:42):
you think.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
About it the, other, thing too is the miss free
throws that you're. SEEING now, i, mean okay see those
two miss free throws That chet holmgren missed were such
a killer. As WELL so i mean through that they
made that play specifically for him to catch it and't.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
Go to the free.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Throw, LINE yeah, I mean houston had a bunch of
misses at the free throw line that.
Speaker 6 (31:59):
Were cast it's just one of those things that.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
You see it comes back to haunt you sometimes when
you're you're not consistently making.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
FREE throws i think as we, wrap up it's this
at least though AS an, nba fan and we, are
right this is why we got into this line.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Of work they've.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
BEEN exciting, i mean my wife's next to me and, we're,
like oh we're.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
Pausing it, You know carver's starting to get, into basketball
WHICH is i, love it, you Know and i'm explaining
to him and all these different parts of the game
and seeing. That excitement that's why we do what, We
do that's why we thirst for getting back. TO that, i,
mean still, to me one of my top three moments
was that Run Where chris, paul became, you know came
(32:38):
in second TO the mvp Race To. Kobe bryant that
series With the Spurs. And, MAVs still, TO me, i can't.
You can't you can't, replicate that, you know getting To
See allen iverson when they first moved.
Speaker 5 (32:50):
Over, Here Yeah dwayne wade and his rookie seas like
playoff basketball. Is different it really is.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Just DIFFERENT and i can't wait for fans because, my kid,
you know. Went around it takes, peer sick even not so,
far ago when, you know you had that sweep Of
the trailblazer. SERIES here, I mean i just you can't, replicate,
That man and it's gotta.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
Be. Fun, Cam YEAH and i think, overall too it's
been great. To see the playoffs this year have been
really entertaining and pretty. Top Notch after i'm not sure
how many people even, remember this but twenty twenty, four
playoffs not just For, the pelicans, but overall we're really
disappointing as far as there were a lot of series that.
Speaker 6 (33:28):
Were sweeps there was a lot. Of blowouts good point
it was it was.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
OVER quickly i mean EVEN The nba Finals was boston
was up three to zero Before the MAVs won. A
game it just what there wasn't really that, much compelling.
Intriguing basketball you could Blame the celtics at least a
little bit for some of that On the, eastern side
because they were just so much better than pretty much.
Everyone else but this this year's playoffs have been a
big bounce back from compared to what we saw.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Last Year, all right Thanks To john deches for sitting
