Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome in to the New Orleans Pelicans Podcast, the official
podcast of your New Orleans Pelicans, a podcast dedicated to
everything you need to know about the squad here from players, coaches, broadcasters,
and those who cover the NBA on a daily basis.
It's time to flock up. The New Orleans Pelicans podcast
(00:29):
starts right now.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Hello everyone, and welcome to the New Orleans Pelicans Podcast.
If it's a podcast of your New Orleans Pelicans, Gus
Catt and gel Jamiken offer with you got a lot
to talk about, only two games since you know what
at the beginning of last week, Jim, but it was
a nice win over the weekend here, three game homestand
has come to a close.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
You get two.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Wins out of it. And the game on Friday against
Golden State, Man, I was as exciting as it could be.
If you came to see Steph Curry and the Warriors,
you got to see what made the Dubs the Dubs
and Steph Steph. But at the same time you saw
the Pels fight and almost you know, come out with
a win. There just your overall thoughts on the three
game home stand for the team.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I thought it was encouraging.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
I mean, to get the two wins is great, but
I mean maybe in some ways, even more important than that,
just the development that we're seeing from several of the
of the younger players. The fact that you know, they're
at the point where they're playing four rookies very significant
minutes is something that we definitely never thought we would
see when the season began. I mean, I don't know
if we thought we'd see more than one rookie play
(01:36):
a lot, so, but I mean the fact that that
a lot of these guys are taking advantage of the minutes.
I really like what I've seen from Keon Brooks lately.
Carlo Makovich since the end of January has played really well,
Ive Mesi continues to make strides, and Antonio Reeves has
been one of the better shooters over this last stretch. So,
I mean, we're seeing a lot of positive stuff from
(01:56):
some of the guys that are at the outset of
their career, and may, in everyone's case other than Eve mecI,
are players that didn't play a ton at the beginning
of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
No doubt. Well, this is what it sounded like on
the Pelicans Radio Network last night. Snepels found a way
to get win number twenty one.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
Chess it left corner Jose one dribble spot up three
nothing but net in front of the Charlotte Barnell.
Speaker 6 (02:18):
That's what you're able to do.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
If you're the Pelicans, you need to turn him over
a couple of times and cash in on it. Reeves
has it steps to his left for three again, two
in a row for Antonio Reeves.
Speaker 7 (02:30):
I know you like to thank you.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
Don't stink off the curl Antonio Reeves for the heat check.
Roath Is really smelled like boom boom straight away and splashed,
taken by Brooks Junior, front court, sprinting, driving, laying it up.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
And in and one file by Taj.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
Gibson and the rookie key On Brooks Junior in double
figures for the third straight game now with ten points.
Speaker 8 (03:01):
And it feels like a month of Sundays since the
Pills had the lead.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
Throw it out long, intercepted by Alfred Peyton. Three on two,
Peyton shoves it dude Keon Brooks Junior for the two
hand flush and a career high yab Brook had a
little bit of explosive myth. That's you don't realize that
was a big time elevated dunk. Pell's up two, four
point fifty five to go in the SKC Alvarado get
(03:26):
it to Reeves Papa left wing. Three oh, big shot,
rook big shot, first career start, and he is responding.
Now sixteen points. Jose with two with one off the glass.
No good, you're up two. With forty seconds to go
(03:47):
three ball Smith buried it up top. Charlotte leads ninety
four to ninety three. Nicks Alvarado front court, right drives
baseline underneath the hoop, reverse layup, good end one for
Almoradodaquon jeffries with the hoop and the harm but Jose
(04:13):
has gone to the basket with the intent to shoot.
Shot clog. Now it's seven. Now you gotta go with five.
Jose right wing, crosses over, start, stops, drives in, dump
it off the Brooks lay it up at the buzzer
and that's gonna let absolutely light it up. That's a
(04:34):
bucket win, a winner. Five seconds to go. What a
play by Jose and then the rookie key On Brooks Junior,
who has had the game of his life.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Hi Jim Saws you hear the highlights there before we
listen to what James Berego thought of that game. What
kind of stands out to you listening to those highlights?
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Well, I mean one thing that stands out from listening
to it.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
You know, I don't consider myself to be any pop
culture expert or guru gus, but I actually did get
JD's references to outcasts there when he was talking about
Antonio Reeves. Should we explain kind of the backstory to
that Antonio Reeves has a resemblance to Andre three thousand.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
So now we're getting.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
A lot of mentions to lyrics from songs and so,
you know, I'm a little I'm kind of proud of
myself that I actually understood what he was talking about
in those cases.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
But if you don't know, you know, maybe go.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
To YouTube, look up some mute or yeah, do some
mute lyrics.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Searches for outcasts.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
You'll know exactly what JD was referencing on the Antonio
Reeves highlight reel.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
It's pretty impressive. The catalog that JD has it is
from that group is deep cuts, no doubt. Here is
James Morigo, who was filling in for D coach Willie Green,
who missed the game, for personal reasons as the acting
head coaches thoughts on the win.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
I mean, the young guys got it done tonight. Really
proud of them. Put Robinson Earle in that. Carlo I
thought was great. Eve was great. You know, our two
big stepped up played well. But Keon I thought, had
a heck of a game tonight. His energy, it's physicality,
he can make shots. He's a heady player. He's got
the physical size to guard as well and go get rebounds,
(06:08):
like we're gonna need that moving forward. So he's trending
in the right way. Give him a ton of credit.
So it looks like you're playing with a lot more
confidence right now as well. So really proud of him,
and gives Reeves too. You know, Antonio tone was really good.
He got to school in there in the second half.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
I love Keon Brooks being able to come out and
get that opportunity. Seventeen points for him. But I think
you're gonna like this. This is what he had to
say about that last highlight you heard that basically put
the game away.
Speaker 9 (06:35):
No, I just realized I had the five man on me,
so I went to go scream Rose to possibly get
a switch or whatever. I just went and hid in
the dunker and Jose made a play. If he shot it,
I was gonna try to tip it in, but he
dumped it off late and I was able to find
the glass and put it in.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
You like that kind of stuff, don't you like the headiness,
the IQ level of the play. We just see it
from Oh, that's a nice play by him. They meant
to do it and he was like no, but he
was thinking out quickly a couple of scenarios there to help,
And I think that's it speaks a lot for a
young player that hasn't gotten a lot of minutes on
an NBA court.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Yeah, it's an interesting kind of inside look at all
the different things that were going through his head in
terms of how do I contribute on this play? So yeah,
I mean, I think you have to be happy for
the way that he's played lately. And I know I'm
going to get into this a little bit more towards
the end of the episode today, But I mean, Brooks
and Reeves became the eighteenth and nineteenth different Pelicans player
(07:30):
to make a start this season, and of those nineteen guys,
sixteen of them are on the roster right now. So
I mean there's a few guys obviously that have gone
to different teams. Brendon Ingram, Javonte Green, Daniel Tice I
think are the three that started that aren't here. But
I mean, if you look at it, every single player
on this team has now gotten an opportunity to play significantly.
So I mean those guys have definitely taken advantage of it.
(07:52):
And by the way, too, Brooks didn't start last night,
but he had seventeen points and led the team in scoring.
So if you went back to October and you told
me Keon Brooks is going to lead the team in scoring,
I would be in a game in March.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
I would be shocked by that.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
But I mean, the fact that he's able to, you know,
capitalize on how much playing time he's getting, and the
fact that he combined with Jose Varado to make the
biggest plays of the game in the last minute last
night was great.
Speaker 9 (08:18):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
And here's Jose Varado who again made some winning plays there.
James Rao called him a winner after the game yesterday
and what he's been able to do, but specifically about
Antonio Reeves and again, and if you've listened to me
at all, since I've started here in September.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
I loved him in Summer League.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
I loved what he's been able to do here. But
listen to jose On Reeves.
Speaker 8 (08:37):
Yeah, he's gonna score. That's what he does. He's you
could tell he doesn't worry on he's more he could miss,
you know, ten, he feels like he made ten. That's
that's the great mindset he hasn't And that's great to have,
you know, right when you know what you do as
best and he can shoot that. Boy, he knows that
he could shoot at a high cliff, and you know,
he gotta stay with that that mindset because he can
(08:57):
shoot that hole. He can score.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
He's in the middle of a really good stretch if
you think about it. I mean, he was four for
five from three point range last night. And when a
rookie is in the position that he's in and he
has a game like that, a lot of times you're like, well,
you know, great game.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
He's done that a lot lately though.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I Mean he had a game at the beginning of
the home stand against Philly where he was five to
seven from three point range.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
And he had a.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Stretch not that long ago where he made twelve shots
in a row from the field, which is even more
impressive when you consider that the vast majority of his
shots are jumpers. It's not like he's getting wide open
layups and dunks to add to his field goal percentage.
So yeah, his efficiency over this recent stretch has has
been really impressive and really helpful.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
All right, Well, mister Wes Johnson from the television side
of things is going to join us here to talk
a little bit more about some of those players and
also some of the things Jim that he's learned in
his inaugural season as the television analyst along with Andrew
and Aaron. So here's our conversation with that when we
come right back afterwards. It's got a handful of things
for you as well, since it is.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
A Monday, all.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Right to I'm not of bringing a very special guest,
mister Wes Johnson. You can catch them over in the
Gulf Coast Sports and Entertainment Network along with Andrew and Aaron.
And it's hard to believe, sir, we are April Aprils tomorrow,
So we are here in the final two weeks of
the season. Everything so much to get into, but it
still doesn't change does it always nice to see you
and talk after a win.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
No matter the.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Type of season, a win is a win. It was
fun that last night seen so many guys. I know,
Jim's gonna ask you about some of the younger guys
and stuff. But you find a way to win. You
can't ever take that for granted, hos.
Speaker 7 (10:35):
No, not at all, Especially in this league. It's hard
to come by win. So when you do get them,
regardless of the circumstances, you definitely appreciate it. So us
fittingly switched it around in that second half. So that's
something that you want to see the team do. So
us getting that win, me leaving out of it, I'm like, okay,
I'm actually happy. I don't want to see the lack
(10:55):
of energy or any of anything of that sort. So
us being able to get those wins, regardless of who's
who we're playing, it's something that you're always excited about.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Yeah, I mean it ended up being a two to
one home stand over the three games that the Pelicans played.
In the one loss that they did get against Golden State,
I thought that was a pretty good effort as well.
I mean they were in the game, they were only
down by a point going into the fourth quarter, So
not bad, I mean, but in terms of, you know,
some of the specifics with this team, I wanted to
ask you, obviously be played in the NBA for a
bunch of years, just some specifics on some of the
(11:26):
players that we're getting to see a lot more now
than we were earlier in the season, if at all.
And I wanted to start with Keon Brooks, who's I
guess kind of a guy that played the same position
as you. What have you seen from him in terms
of you know, For example, James Brego after the game
last night, had a lot of complimentary things to say
about not only the way that he's playing right now,
but just the way he's trending and kind of his
(11:47):
future ability maybe to contribute in the NBA.
Speaker 7 (11:50):
Religious him being in the right right place at the
right time I think he and him being out there
being to say, a three and D type of player.
But he's playing the right he's not overstepping his boundaries,
he's cutting when he needs to, he's knocking down shots,
he's having that effort on the defensive end. So for
him being able to slide in and have a approach
(12:11):
to the game where he's like, I'm going to impact
the game regardless if my shot isn't falling. You've seen
him make that tip in at the left. That was
the basketball guy's rewarding you, Like you're putting all the
time and effort in when you're in the G league
and now you're getting your shot up here, So you
definitely want to play the right way, and he's been
doing that. So all the stuff that he's getting, the
points that he's scoring, and all the deflections rebounds that
(12:32):
he's able to impact the game with. So him being
able to do that is just a testament of him
being having this time and his opportunity and maximizing it.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
When you see a guy like him, I mean, is
one of the things that stands out to you the
most his versatility. It just seems like he's got kind
of the tools and even some of the skill set
to be somebody who you know you're going to go
into a game and you're not going to say if
he doesn't score twenty points, he doesn't help us. It
seems like he's been able to kind of check a
bunch of different boxes so far.
Speaker 7 (13:00):
Yeah, me watching him out his approach and his whole
demeanor is a professional. He doesn't have anything where you
can be like, Okay, he can't shoot, he can't. You
can see all the stuff that you can like enhance
in him, but the defensive side, that's something that he
has a will for. He's always trying to compete. He's
not trying to shy away from anything because he understands
(13:21):
the situation. He understands opportunity that's there. So he's going
to go out there and do whatever it needs needs
be to stick and be up here with us. So
him actually being able to show what he's able, he's
capable of. Everybody's witnessing it, and it's something that, Okay,
you have a future in that if you continue to
water it.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Another guy, you know, rookie player. I mean, I think
we're gonna be talking a lot about rookies today. Antonio
Reeves has been one of the hottest shooters in the
NBA since the All Star Break. I mean, what if
you liked about the way that he's played lately. It
seems like his confidence is really kind of skyrocketing.
Speaker 7 (13:58):
Yeah, it's confident, That's my thing. What seeing him he
had that outburst in Cleveland, I'm like okay, and you're like, oh,
was he just hid or was it at a flu or
when he came in game out the game when he
gets his opportunity and he's knocking down shots, So I'm like, okay,
he's a scorer, so he can shoot the ball. But
then actually him taking the ball off the bounce is
something that you want to continue to see him do
because him being able to shoot the ball, like, that's
(14:19):
gonna get you on the floor, that's your niche, that's
your go to, that's what's gonna have you be able
to stick. We've been saying. You just said he's shooting
the ball really well. So him being able to take
the ball off the bounce and playing that in between game,
it's something you want to see him start slowly start
to grow into like I'm just not just a spot
up shooter or just a gun slinger. I can actually
play in the end between game and be a complete score.
(14:42):
So if you're looking at CJ. CJ was off the bounce,
creators Hot Creator, you see the same traits in Antonio.
Antonio has the same ability to be a threat. When
he steps on the floor, they're gonna look at him
like he's a score, he's a threat. So him being
able to enhance and really, like I said, with a
kN water that what you see in him and continue
(15:03):
to do that, especially being a rookie, young young player.
All these opportunities that they're getting, especially in these late games,
regardless of the circumstances, these games are vital because you're
going to have some type of confidence going into next season.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Unlike several of the guys that we're talking about today,
eve Mesi actually has been on the court all season,
from the start of the year. He's actually leading the
Pelicans in games played, which I mean that's been very
valuable in a year where there's been a lot of
unfortunate bad luck with injuries. But I mean from watching him,
you know, first week of the season, first game of
the season, he came in off the bench and was
(15:36):
a big factor. What are some of the things that
you've seen from him or maybe things that you like
the most about his developmental curve, you know, over these
last few months from the start of the season until now.
Speaker 7 (15:47):
He's growing up. I think that first game he was
probably like what is going on and having to guard
all the elite centers and power forwards and all those
big man throughout every game in him having to understand
and trying to figure out how he can be effective
and be in the right place at the right time.
But then slowly you're seeing him take over games with
(16:10):
the block shots, the tip dunks, just being in like
athletic and running the floor. So for me watching him,
like throughout this course of this season, I saw the growth.
I saw the game in and game out like he
added something. He changed the way he was altering shots
at the rim, he changed the way he was attacking
people off the dribble. He adding his little push shot
(16:32):
around the rim. So the growth of me see throughout
the course of the season, you didn't you saw a
rookie start understanding like I'm going be effective in this,
but I can also add this. So he's slowly transitioning
into that year two already before our eyes. It's not
just one dimensional with him. You've seen him slowly becoming
a full blown player, and like the universe rewarded him
(16:56):
with the opportunity to play and maximize these minutes and
he did. So thing he can do is to continue
to grow off.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
That seems like his floater is something that people talked
about maybe going back a month or two of this
is something that you need to add to your game,
and it seems like he's been able to implement that
yeah into games, which I think is another really good
sign from what we've seen.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
Yeah, I mean, you would think definitely doing While you're young,
you're not really thinking about it, like, you know what,
I'm just gonna they telling me to do it. I'm
just gonna throw it up there. And then as you
get older you think about, Okay, I'm not comfortable with
shooting his shot because it's not really me. But he
needs to add that because if you add a zion
back on the floor, that's getting double team and you're
catching a ball in the pocket. Now you're in this
(17:37):
in between zone and then you can't really get all
the way to the rim. So that shot him able
to knock that shot down is only going to help him.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
You mentioned some of the unique elements and aspects of
Eve's game, especially as a rookie, just how impressive he's
been in a much bigger role than I think anyone
thought he would have. I wanted to ask you about
Carlo Makovich because he's a guy that really didn't play
a whole lot in the beginning part of the season.
But what are some of the things that he's shown
over these last few weeks or even going back more
(18:06):
than a month or so. I think it was late
January when he really started to get to play a
lot that is encouraging in terms of his future in
the NBA. As you know, even if it's a backup
big who plays a significant role.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Him finishing around the rim was for me surprising because
he gets the ball around the rim, he's trying to finish.
He's trying to dunk on you. He's trying to finish
around the rim. So that fearlessness around that rim is
something that can be taught. Like you're not trying to
shy away from contact, You're trying to go through everybody.
So him being that one lob threat, he's actually trying
(18:40):
to run and catch lobs. So him, that's, like I
was saying last night, that's the office in itself. Have
no plate broken down. You run to a pick and roll,
he's taken off to the rim. Defense collapses, you have
a skip to the corner, wing shake up. So him
being able to be a lob threat and knowing that
I am a threat off this pick and roll is
something that you see him continually try to do and
(19:02):
spacing the floor. Him being able to space the floor
and actually knock down corner threes and be a threat
behind the rim of something he continued to add to
his game is going to be valuable to us and
to himself.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Let's talk about kind of the bigger picture of this
situation that the team is in right now. Obviously there's
seven games left. They've been out of, you know, realistic
playoff contention, postseason contention for a while. You know, you
were on some really good teams throughout your career. You're
on some playoff teams and that kind of thing. But
there's there's a couple of seasons where you're on a
team that's out of the race and you're into March
(19:34):
in April. Is it the kind of thing where you know,
especially if you're like a veteran player, that you have
to you know, maybe I don't know if it's talk
to guys or make sure that you carry yourself a
certain way so that at this point in the season,
everybody tries to continues to stay locked in as much
as possible, and you don't get that senior itis last
day of school type feeling around the team.
Speaker 7 (19:56):
Yes, I mean I was. I can say I was
both of those players. I was wanted to young players
on a bad team, let's say a bad team, but
this team that was out of contingent of playing in
the playoffs. That I was in that situation. So for
me going into it, I have to continue to look
at it as I'm trying to grow into the player
that they're trying to get me to be. How can
(20:17):
I fit into the role or fit into what they're
trying to build here. So if they need me to
space the florid, they need me to play defense, continue
to really hone into that, lean into that, because now
you're going to the next season. When guys come back,
guys get healthy, they see that you can be a
part of what they're trying to build. So it's just
not you just letting the season be a wash and
like you know, I got six seven games left, I'm
(20:37):
just trying to make do get through it and go
on vacation in the summer. Now you're just looking at
it as I'm trying to continue to build something with
this organization, and then the Vets that's on the team. Yeah,
they're going to be talking to the guys like there's
still opportunity for you to showcase yourself and actually play
the right way because it's twenty nine other teams. Regardless
(20:58):
if you're here or not, people are still watching and
continue to let them know that and understand that it's
still your job, but you actually have the audition and
regardless of the games remaining and the circumstances.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
You know, you've last played in the NBA in twenty nineteen,
and if you go back to the beginning of your career,
I think that was the beginning. It was kind of
like when social media blew up, whether it was Twitter
or whatever, it was kind of like when it first
became really prominent in right around twenty ten around there,
maybe even going back a year or two before then.
But I'm curious, you know, one of the things that
(21:31):
is a big conversation around the NBA right now, And
just for example, I'll use an example on the Pelicans'
Twitter account when they posted the final score last night
of a win. There's seventy five comments after the game,
and seventy two of them are fans that are upset
about the team winning.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
So as a player, was that something that you ever heard?
Speaker 4 (21:50):
And I know, you know there's a different there's a
huge difference between twenty twenty five and twenty nineteen even
in terms of that talk. But was that something that
you ever heard from fans about Did you ever want
to hear a fan say like or see it on
social media, like people being upset about a team winning
at the end of the season. It seems like that
would be aggravating as a player.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
Not didn't see it, but you hear it. I mean,
there's something that you hear, regardless of if your own
social media or not. During that time when I was playing, No,
it wasn't as worldly ran like it is now, so
you didn't really pay attention as much. But no, I
think the fans and everybody understand that. I think the
(22:30):
unique situation that we're able to get a hot pick
and they're like locked in, so you know, they have
their own idea of what we should be doing.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Sure, but in the.
Speaker 7 (22:40):
Grand scheme of things, I guess the guys that are
running in and guys that are in this building understand
what it needs to be done. So I think they
got the job for that reason, So I just want
them to understand, like it's we'll be fine. I understand
that they're emotional about it, and I get it, but
they have this job for a reason.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
I always tell the quick story of when Marco Bell
Andelli played here. He was only a couple of years
I think into his career at that point in the NBA.
He'd only been in America for a few years, and
he one day was talking about how he was on
Twitter on his page and a bunch of people were
mad about the horn the Hornets then winning a game,
and he was so confused because it just seemed like
(23:19):
the most you know, just strange, bizarre, alien idea that
fans would be would be upset about that. So I mean,
for me, my perspective on it too is like I
think everybody's entitled to their opinion, and the fans are
totally entitled to whatever opinion they have, especially the people
that pay for tickets and support the team and spend
(23:39):
their time. But it's kind of one of those things
where I also kind of have jokingly say you can
keep that to yourself, the opinion about like telling the
team that you're upset about losing. I don't understand the
logic of that. But but then again, I think people
just liked events. So but it's just one of those
unique situations that happens right now in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
I hear you. I think it's it's very interesting saying
I goes and Jim can go for three hours on that.
But look here, because here's the thing though, I mean
it's true because look it's not even on the air,
just you know, talking about it from a basketball sense.
I go home. You know, it's like my wife's like,
well they want him, like yeah, oh yeah, you know,
because look, you you put in a lot of work
(24:20):
right to go out there and play, and it's hard
to not want to compete and to win. And as
you guys just mentioned going over a couple of players,
look we go back to the Summer League last summer
where we got to see Antonio Reeves and some of
these other guys and Brooks and the work they put
in and training camp and playing. And I mean I
came home, I'm like, I love Antonio Reeves. I do
can play because we haven't even got to the point
(24:40):
that I think he can run the floor and he
can play point and turn the ball over and how
big a How many times have you guys in postgame
talked about turnovers and how important that is.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
So these games.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Are everything for these players, you know, for whether or
not they're going to be pros. I had talked to
Jim about that last night. Some of these guys are
going to try to play professionally for a while. So
going out there and showing you can play hard, you're
coaching will and doing those things, it matters. And I
know it just stinks.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Man.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
We're in the point where do you really want to
win and do you're not when at the end of
the day, it's about winning.
Speaker 7 (25:13):
It is, and that you're trying to take the competitive
fire out of these guys going in and you're saying
we don't want to win. It's like, what do you mean,
I'm still a competition regardless of the circumstances. We're going
out there to play against a team that's trying to
beat us. I'm not going to roll over like we're
going to go out here and compete. So you're taking
(25:34):
away the job of the guys that are getting the
opportunity that haven't played. So those guys getting on the
floor and actually getting able to show what they're being
capable of throughout this entire season that haven't been on
the floor and getting these quality minutes that they need
to be getting too for us and everybody to see
what they're capable of. It's hard to tell them not
to win when they need to go out there and win.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
And I think we can all agree that losing is miserable.
The worst think about this season, how many times he
had some soul searching nights where it's just like, man,
this is terrible.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
So, yeah, when you look at a team like Detroit, Souse,
I was going to ask you my final question is
you know, I don't know if we'll get a chance
to talk to be forty end of the season, maybe
afterwards again kind of recap and your thoughts on New
year side. The standing's out in front of you. But
I look at a team like Detroit, they lost twenty
eight games, rollers yeah, I mean, I can't even imagine
what that's like when we got to ten or eleven
(26:26):
over the last couple of years.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
That's brutal.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
It was dark twenty eight. I mean that's a month,
two months here for two months, right, But that's my part,
So I do think like the Crucible can kind of
you know, strengthen you. I mean, look Oklahoma City because
I kind of want to start there and I'll get
I'll just open it up to you what stands out
to you this year. But Aaron and I have talked
(26:49):
about this with Okay, See, this was a team a
couple of years ago, around the time that the Pels
drafted Zion, they were about draft picks, you know, with
that like thirty first round picks or something that something ridiculous, right,
So they were all about the rebuild and they did that,
and they went through two three years where that young
group played together, lost together. They went and got SGA,
(27:12):
but everybody else around them were draft picks and one
and lost together. Is that something that you think maybe
can help here? I know it's about more health whether yes,
as opposed to finding the right talent. Yeah, talent here,
God stay healthy. But do you think having these young
guys play and do all those things does that help
(27:34):
this organization help the other players? I mean listening to
Zion months ago say hey, we want that momentum so
we're off and running next year. Do you think that
can sort of help them?
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (27:45):
I mean if you're talking about guys that, like you're saying,
lost together, and they've been in the trenches together. They've
been through all those close games and trying to figure
everything out the practices and going on winning streaks or
whatever you want to say about them. But you saying
that they did it together, it's only going to bring
them stronger. So if you have guys six, seven, guys
that have been through it for numerous of years, it's
(28:08):
only going to turn around because they understand how they
need to go about it. They understand how I need
to be in this situation where I'm closing out to
a guy and I know he's going to be behind
me because I've been in this situation before when we
were losing and we were not on the other side
of these winning streaks. So they going to be like
you're saying, Okay, see a couple of years ago, like
(28:30):
they won at the top of this and you look
at the same thing, like they added one or two
guys and after that they're at the top. Yes, they
added SGA, but SGA have to go through those growing
pains with them. And same with lou Dort saying with
all those guys that are over there now, and we're
looking at them like, oh, all of them are all starts.
All of them are capable of going anywhere else and
playing and being productive on different teams because they've been
(28:53):
through something together and been on the winning side of it. Yes,
health is a issue here, but once everybody's healthy, you've
seen the product of certain guys out there going out
and have these being in the house burst defensive plays
and if you've missed that together and everybody's sticking with it,
they'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Trust is a big thing about that too, isn't it. Yes,
Because like you can you can hear the way Zion
talks about some of these younger guys getting a chance
to play. I love you know we played in the
opening segment Jose talking about winning, it would also about
KB and some of the other guys. I think that matters, right,
because that's going to bring something different when these guys,
whether it's Australia or here next year, when twenty camp starts,
(29:30):
that practice can be a little bit more competitive. Right
when we saw it in Nashville and Jose, Jim, you know,
I talked about it. Berego and his team, they didn't
want to back down. From the starters and stuff. So
I think going through it, you know, embracing the suck
and understanding how hard that is to go about it
to where you come around on the other end, I
do think it matters and your your brothers, if that
makes any sense, going through this much more makes you stronger. Yeah,
(29:53):
all right, man, final thing for me, when you look
at the standards, you look at where we are going
into the final month of the season two weeks, what
stands out to you other than okay.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
See, oh, that that bunch in that six, seven eighth
bracket right there, and that that middle bracket is going
to be very very crucious towards the end of the year.
Everybody's going to be fighting for all those spots to
try to move up and not being to play in.
And we're going to play two teams that are fighting
to be staying in, the Lakers and the Clippers trying
(30:21):
to stay in their spot and move up. So for
us go out there to play spoiler and go out
there and just to play and compete against them. It's
going to be very vital for those two teams to
try to take care of business. But we get to
play a little villain in those type of roles. So
it's gonna be interesting to see how the season ends
in that that six to seven range.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
This guy's a pro. What a perfect setup he gave
us for the last second.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Today Jacot for on Mondays gives us this spoiler scale.
You know how high that is to be able to
to go and do that. Did you like playing the
villain every now and then?
Speaker 1 (30:53):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (30:55):
I mean especially when we were like right out of mathematically,
like before the play in the start and we were
like on a nine ten, it was like, you know what,
since we can't go, they can't.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Yeah, So yeah, yeah, I think that's either inherently you
or not right as a player, whether you like playing
on the road and stuff. And I love hearing some
players I do that, Like I totally would be me,
Like I would look forward to the just you know,
index finger to the lips. Yes, when you do the
game winner? Are you playing so well? The home crowd
is silent? But you have that's a mindset, isn't it?
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (31:26):
It is, there is a mindset. This team was really
good on the road last year, so I think there's
some guys in this slack room can do it. And
I think the whole point of this west in our conversations.
We can't wait to get to next year with you.
We got talent, man, I can't wait to sort of
see it. The same time, I think the playoffs will
be fun. Thank you for your time, man always sure,
thanks us, all right, our thanks to Wes Johnson, who
(31:49):
you know I was gonna ask me. He walked in.
He was dressed in the rain, just like we were.
Speaker 6 (31:52):
Me.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
It's good to see that despite being that tall, the
rain still finds him as well. There.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Yeah, and I felt a little bad because I had
to let him in and I didn't see his message
for a couple minutes.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
So he was standing out there in.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
The rain, in the rain.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
But you know, he's a very resourceful man.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
So he did find a little spot where he wasn't
you know, he was undercover, so that was good, but
I still felt bad that he was.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
He was a little bit soaked.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Yeah, if you're listening, we were all this morning around
school time and worktime here as well. All right, let's
get to it. It is Monday, Well.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
It's a Monday.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Thanky Jim is always our Friday.
Speaker 7 (32:29):
It's time for mister Eichenhoffer to give his Players of
the Week and a player to watch for this week,
which got big guy.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Let's start with the player of the week. This is
a guy that we talked about at the beginning of
the show as well as with Wes somewhat extensively. That's
Antonio Reeves. He averaged twelve point seven points per game
over the three games Pelicans went to and one. He
was second on the team in scoring. Carlo Mekovich actually
led the team with thirteen points per game, which is
not a high number, but it kind of shows you
(32:59):
how much balance the Pelicans had. I believe they had
eight players the average ten points or more over those
three games, the win against Philly, the close loss against
Golden State, and then the win against Charlotte. But Antonio
Reeves first start of his NBA career was in the
win against Charlotte, and these over this past week he
shot fifty eight percent from the field, sixty nine percent
(33:22):
from three point range, and a quick fact I tweeted
about this briefly this morning. He's actually leading if you
look at all the players in the NBA who've taken
at least thirty three point attempts since the All Star break.
He has the number one percentage in the entire league
at sixty one percent. He's nineteen for thirty one on
three pointers, So you know, we mentioned it's not like
(33:42):
he's you know, five for seven's. He's actually up to
a pretty decent number now, and he's been if you
look at it that way, he's been the best three
point shooter in the NBA since the All Star breaks,
So definitely worth crediting him for that. In terms of
the player to watch, you know, I mentioned Antonio Reeves
first start of his NBA career in the win against Charlotte.
(34:04):
Keon Brooks had his first start of his NBA career
in the win against Philly. He's now had three straight
double digit scoring games. He averaged twelve point seven points
over the last three games, shot fifty four percent from
the field, fifty percent on three pointers, seventy five percent
on free throws. So he's a player to watch because
I feel like it's just interesting to see how much
(34:25):
more he can contribute. I like his consistency lately. It
seems like he's making an impact every single game when
he gets you know, a good amount of minutes. So
just curious to see how he closes out the season
over these last two weeks, but you know this week
going forward, and that leads me to the spoiler scales.
Thinking speaking of this week, the Pelicans play at the
(34:45):
Clippers on Wednesday, at the Lakers on Friday, and then
they host Milwaukee on Sunday. So starting with the Clippers game,
LA is forty two and thirty two. Right now, they're
in eighth place in the West, but they're only one
game behind Golden State, which is in sixth place right now.
So on the spoiler scale, I give that one at eight.
I think this is a really important game for the Clippers.
(35:06):
It's one that they're going to look at as we
really have to get this win. Every game is important
for them, but especially when they're playing against teams that,
you know, like New Orleans that aren't in contention right now.
And then Friday, the Lakers are forty five and twenty nine.
They're in fourth place in the West. They had a
huge win over Memphis on Saturday, which right now would
be the four to five first round matchup.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
Between those two teams.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Lakers are one and a half games behind Denver in
third place, but they're also only two and a half
games ahead of seventh place Minnesota, so they're not even
totally clear of not being in the play in tournament,
although that two and a half game cushion with eight
games left is pretty decent. But I went with the
ten on that one just because I feel like this
was this is probably the last opportunity of the season
(35:49):
to go with a ten. If you look at the
last four games of the season next week, I don't
think there's gonna be a situation that comes up where.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
We get to the peak of the scale.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
And then lastly on Sunday hosting Milwaukee Bucks, they're forty
and thirty four right now, they're sixth place in the East.
They are one and a half games behind fifth place Detroit,
So I mean, I don't know if it necessarily matters
a ton if you finish fifth or sixth, so but
it's still an important game for them.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
They're the you know.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
Just like the Clippers are safe as far as finishing
in the top eight of the West, the Bucks are
safe as far as finishing in the top six, so
they don't really have to worry too much about dropping
down to the playing tournament in the East. So I
gave that one a seven on the spoiler scale. Important
game for the Bucks, but I don't think it's going
to be make or break, so to review spoiler scale,
Clippers eight, Lakers ten, Milwaukee seven. So this is an
(36:41):
above average week, I would say on the scale, I.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
Knew you couldn't wait for that. The next time we
do the New Orleans Pelicans podcast, we'll be Friday, and
