Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
podcasts Great Tipy with us here on NHL in Scripted
episode sixteen, Coming at You, and Dylan Stroman is our
special guest. What a great backstery has not only going
(00:27):
way back with Jason Demurz, my co host, but also.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
He's going to birds.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
I see it right now as Alexander ovench Can continues
the Great Chase and as far as Stroman is concerned,
he's broken up big to the last couple.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Of seasons, going to wash and really has rejuvenated his career.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
We'll ask him about that, playing with Obie, stories of McDavid,
back to the OHL, his brother in the Calder Cup.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Lots of good stuff coming up from Dylan Stroman here momentarily.
Plus we'll talk about the NHL and the stretch run.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Right now is we're going to late March, you know,
March madness, Weather's getting better, spring bling.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
There's a lot going on here in the world of hockey,
speaking of pucks.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Always nice doing Amazon Prime Monday at Hockey and Jason
Murz is chiming in as I was just back home
in Toronto, the Leafs and the Flames critical game for
both these teams.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
JD.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
You were locked in. Were you back home?
Speaker 1 (01:09):
How are you watching Amazon Prime Canada only broadcast here
in America.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Well, I keep tabs on you and make sure you're
not cheating on me. And you were on Amazon Monday
Night Prime. It was a good game, though I wanted
to watch. I really it's tough when you work with
the network and you have to you have to fall
so many games and cover so many games, so sometimes
you don't just get to sit and watch. And I
kind of asked, like e. G. Erradick and guys like that.
(01:35):
I'm like, how do you do it? Like how do
you stay on top of all the stats? Knowing everything?
And he's like he's honestly, He's like, it's it's overwhelming
at times. So you just every now and again, if
you can pick two teams you haven't watched consistently, just
kind of go sit down. So I've watched Toronto, but
I haven't watched a ton of Calgary this year. Yeah,
it's like, you know what, I'm gonna sit down watch
Obviously one of the worst games I could have watched,
(01:56):
because they got absolutely shit pumped.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
They got shit pumped by Toronto.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
But it was good to see because everybody's kind of
talking about Matthews. You know, we here, we're starting to
hear rumors that he went you know, I think it
was Switzerland for his back, and it was his back
that he was getting stem cells or something or whatever
we want to talk about for that.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
So it was good to see him.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Kind of everybody's questioning as he's playing through an injury,
what's going on? And he kind of shows up and
shows out. And then obviously I get to watch your
pre post and intermission reports and you know, fantastic work.
But you love to throw in, you love to throw
in a random movie cinema quote. And Blake Bolden every
time was looking at.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
You, like look Dustin Wolf, the Wolf of Wall Streets.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
I was with you, Yeah, yeah, you went over ahead
a few times. I'm used to it now because we're,
you know, sixteen episodes in. But Blake Bolden's probably not
used of all of your your endless knowledge and of
the cinema and what do you call it, the cinema industry?
You know all everything, I mean, your knowledge and especially
(03:01):
you and Taw when you guys get talking. I told
my wife, yeah, other day. I was like, and we
got to talk about that a little bit. She's like,
but did you watch The Brutalist, because tell I told you,
Ai yam, I'm not watching The Brutis.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Are you still getting buzzed from last up?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:16):
But the way you guys talk about the writers and
the screenplay, and I like went to my op and
I'm like, I know shit about movies here.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
I thought I'm sending fout.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
She's like, yeah, you rewatched the same movie seventeen hundred
times and I'm like, yeah, a Pacific rim Uprising, great movie.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I love its. Tu Dog Day Afternoon established your bonafly.
That's all I need to hear.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
I like the old school Donny Brasco. Yeah, like mob movies.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Forget about it.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
I want to go to the intermissions for a second
because I'm glad you mentioned it. So I've bet John
Shannon the first period, but I'm glad. It's actually why
I wanted to start absolute legends in the game. And
if you're a hockey fan, clearly listen to this podcast.
You know the name is Daryl Sittler. Landy McDonald talking
to Daryl Sittler ten point game. You know his responses
when I said, what was going through your mind? Because
I honestly thought it would have been broken by now.
And I said, really, you think like a tempoint game.
(04:02):
Wasn't that monumental chiep And he said, no, I knew
it was big, but I just would have thought with
Gretzky and the way the high scoring was in the eighties,
Brian Lemieux, McDavid, somebody would have broken it. And now
it feels it to me in many ways as a
hockey fan, unbreakable record ten points at Daryl Siler and
Lanny McDonald's a team at Sittler's.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Of course, back in the day with Toronto.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
It's as one of those records.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Shit, did you just go? That's I see both aspects
of it.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
One ten points in a game is maddening, But the
other thing, I kind of understand Darryl's play.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
He would just would have expected some.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Twelve two games and we would have broken his record,
and it's not gonna happen today's game.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Well, I mean, goalies go down and butterfly now, so it's.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
You know, a little bit kicks saving a beauty a
little different. It's a little harder to score from a
half Clapper from the point. Nothing against that era, because
you know, the technology wasn't there, so it was probably
a lot harder to stand up and shoot and you know,
swing those tree trunks that they had. But you know,
I mean, we've had a couple of what seven point games?
Is that the most we've had. We'll have to check.
(04:54):
I think seven point games. I know Nick Schmalt said
seven points last year?
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Correct, Sam Gangye eight point game in twenty twelve, Alfredson's
seven point game in Oh wait, Yoger said one point
game in three thanks to tell for the could you
believe Avice? Of all the names with respect to Sam Ganye,
even Dave Gandhia is astounded by that.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
That's crazy.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Back to Austin Matthews, this is a guy who with
twenty four goals going into that game, sixty nine a
season ago, and I know he's missed fifteen games. But
if you look at great goal scorers in the past,
and I don't care who what it is, Gretzky, Bossy,
let you Stephen Samcoast, if you have a sixty goal season.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
There's never been that precipitous to drop.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Even taking to account the fact that Matthews missed fifteen games,
so I'm with you that he kind of needed all
those games.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
The Leafs in general needed a game like that.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
They only won one of their last six games. Matthews
goes a couple up to twenty six. Maybe he's hurt,
as you suggested, maybe just not having that strong a season.
But it's a little surprising the Austin Matthews at this point,
the only has twenty six goals after sixty nine a
year ago. Martin, by the way, on pice for one
hundred and one points, A guy who always gets beat
up by the Toronto media, still having another trong season.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
The Golden Thing hasn't been as strong lately.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
But for Calgary's perspective, I love Ryan Hoska, always an
engaging coach, Nazim Caji, my guy Gdi. They don't have
much offensive talent. Let's be blunt. I mean they won
the game against the Rangers last night two one. That's
how you win games. Dustin Wolf plays right tight game,
Catriw scores a goal and assists.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
It's got him and humor. Though, do you need more
from Sharon Gobitz than these other players? They might make
the playoffs. But I think it's fasting as we look
at the playoff race. Now, if I said to you
right now, okay, that playoff race Vancouver, I would have
argued the most talented roster, But no JT. Miller now,
no Demco Hughes is not one hundred percent Flames Again,
They've got the best goalie probably with Wolf Utah maybe
still a year away, with some young talent, your boy
(06:31):
Clayton Keller. And then Saint Louis. They've got the best
scheduled down the stretch. Ten games against non playoff teams,
three against nashvillef I'm not mistaken, So that race feels
really wide open.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
I think it comes down to I was kind of
looking at it today. Yes, Saint Louis has the easiest
schedule in the league in the remaining the remaining games,
but I think it's with Quinn Hughes back, and if
Quinn Hughes is healthy and how much he dominates play
and dominance offensively, they're just a different team with him
in the lineup. They absolutely just put a shit kicking
on the Jets last night, and a lot to do
(07:02):
with Quinn Hughes. But I think it's gonna be between.
It's really gonna end up being Vancouver or Saint Louis.
I think Calgary just doesn't have enough. And I think
the season Dustin Wolf has had has been incredible. And
if they do make the playoffs, he should be the
odds on call their favorite.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
He should win it. But Utah huge.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
If they don't make the playoffs, who wins it then celebrating.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
That's a tough one because Hudson right now, Montreal is
lining up to make the playoffs right now, and because
like everything you talked about, there's so many things that
happened last night with losses like it for playoffs and
there's still a lot of games left. But Saint Louis
kind of getting close to Vancouver was huge. I just
think with their schedule they can do it over Vancouver.
(07:44):
But it's I think it's gonna come down to the wire.
But I think it's those two in the West. I
think Utah got that was a bad loss for them
last night. They could not There was a bad loss,
and then everybody else won. That's where it's tough when
you lose and then everybody you're not getting any help.
And then conversely, in the East, like, you know, Montreal
gets that win, Rangers could not. That's one of those games.
(08:05):
If they don't make the playoffs, they're kicking themselves because
they should have won that game against Calgary and back
to back after getting you know, just absolutely destroyed in
Toronto and they're fresh and they just came out lifeless.
So for me in the East, I think it's gonna be.
I think much I want in Montreal Ottawa.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Just to give me the perspective again, very Wednesday action
in the West, four teams separated by four points, and
as you said right now, you feel like Saint Louis Vancouver.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Is the edge.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
In the East, six teams.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Separated by four points for the final wild card Habs, yeah, Rangers,
Red Wings, Blue Jackets, Bruins, Islanders.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I'll discount Boston and the Islanders. It's one of and.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Red Wings that kind of shouts themselves in the foot
too big time.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So Halbs, Rangers are Blue Jackets.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Let's go Habs well, ay Abs.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
If Canada needs this, we need this nice you know
with the tariff scarffs, we need it. There's a lot
of shit. Do you see that Toronto maple Leafs raising
ticket price? This season ticket price is twenty percent. Oh,
it's it's insanity.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
They it's even.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
After you called out the lower bowl and now they're
raising tickets rights even more.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
We we Jason.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
We interviewed Izzy Daniel, who plays with the Toronto Scepters
in the PDVHL, and she said that the lower She's like,
I was just at a Toronto Mapleafs game. She goes,
that's a quiet lower bowl and I was like, thank you,
you fell into the person, another person, another person, and.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
That she plays with the Toronto Steps.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
She's in the reader.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
But the PDVHL fans are when they go to Toronto
and they scream. So all right, so your team in
the easter're picking the habs, I think so. And then Ottawa,
I think I have done it. But the thing with
Ottawa is you look is they played three times against
Columbus before the end of the season, so that's six points.
So if you look, if either team, Columbus wins all
three right now, they're one point back. But if all
(09:53):
Autawa has to do is kind of go get a
couple of points there and Columbus is done. So I
think that hurts. Even though you know they had they
should have won that game against the Devils. That was
you know, we're gonna give some love to the Devils
after this, but they should have won that game. They dominant.
Jake Allen was you know, stood on his head. But yeah,
with with the Blue Jackets, I just don't know. They're
(10:13):
running out of time and it's tough when you get
a leap frog these teams, and teams can get the
the sissy point and get the you know, the overtime
shootout because it gets really tight and it's gonna come
down to the wire though. But it's it's exciting. I
just think Montreal, that fan base Bell Center, Oh my god,
they're so loud right now there. It's it's incredible. My
(10:34):
dad's been so excited. He's say, he's never watched as
much hockey, you know with Harold Harold, Oh he's locked in,
locked in, fucking loaded. He sent me last like yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Baby, he's like halfs.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
I was like, let's go all right, you're liking the halfs.
Just let's get a little love to the Devil's just right.
With one Porler last five, you lose Jack Hughes for
the season. Also, maybe the sky is falling. Their third
place in the Metro. But Bratt Meyer, he Shuer all
been great looks at a first round series against the Hurricanes.
They're analytical bent. I don't think they can make a
run about Jack Hughes. But the fact they played so
(11:07):
well that them surprises me. And by the way, Monday
night's game on Prime early look ahead, we've got the
Canucks and the Devils. We had the game we were
hoping it was the Huge Bowl. Unfortunately Jack will not
be there, but still catch the game Monday on Prime.
How do you feel about these Diablos of Kendanico, The.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Diablos, I think they're gonna They're gonna make it in
I I didn't.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
I think they can they beat the Hurricanes. No, that's
a tough one. That's it.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Here's the thing is people will say, oh, it's a
tough first round matchup for Devils, but it's kind of
a tough one for Carolina. It's a team that kind
of plays a little bit loose. They kind of have
some skill on the back end. You know, Carolina can't
kind of will their way through. It's gonna be if
they can just Outwill Jersey and beat him down. But
(11:54):
you look at the goaltending duo and Jersey, and that's
gonna be the difference. Jake Allen and Jacob Barksham like
if they can steal some games, and that's that's been
the difference, is that they've had some. He brought these
goalies and Fitzgerald did to steal games and they've done
this recently, like they a lot of these games they
shouldn't have won. And then conversely, also if you look
up front, you talk Timo Meyer, Nico Hescher, but Timo Meyer,
(12:16):
everybody goes, wow, he's scoring now and he wasn't scoring before.
Tim O myyer doesn't know how to not be the guy.
He doesn't know how to be a secondary scorer. He
needs to be the person. And he's getting that opportunity
with Jack out and you can see him he's kind
of running with it because he kind of likes that
being the guy. He was like that when San Jose,
when it was him and he was kind of leading
their offense was he was more engaged and more physical
(12:40):
and you can see that again. So it's gonna be
an interesting matchup. It's not my favorite matchup in the
East in round one, but it's really going to be interesting.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
How it shakes out.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
But like if I'm right now, if you're looking at
Washington too, like they're Washington's at the top, they're finishing.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
First Abbs Caps Rangers Caps.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Habs would be a fantastic matchup and would be a
tough one for Capitals to get. I wouldn't want Montreal
in the first round just because that fan base. It's
gonna be. Bell Center is one of the loudest buildings
in the best place to watch a game in hot Oh.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
It's the best, best, best place to call a game too.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
Doing radio there, it's you're right on top of the
fans and it's just so loud.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
It's like a party there.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Nothingly the NHL General Managers meetings in Palm Beach, Florida,
this week.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I mean, EJ E.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Raddick locked in right now. I'm feeling in forant for NHL.
I go whyt me tonanciel type first shift and Mike
AG's got the Florida trip, him and Dan Rosen on
the beach together, so hopefully that's gonna go great. But
as far as news is concerned, according to Elliot Friedman,
one of the main topics these mid season best on
best international tournaments. Everyone's still talking about four n agents right,
highest numbers in ESPN thirty years. Blah blah blah. Everyone
(13:47):
so excited obviously next year to the Olympics taking place
in Italy. But it doesn't interrupt the season and you
can speak to this. Is there anything you can do,
JD to help the schedule because you have the best
players in the world. Go go go, go go go
playing for their team, playing for their fans.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Pause.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Oh, no, pause, I'm going best on best and then
coming right on back. Is there anything we can do
to help these guys out?
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Huh oh, sorry, dozed off there to GM meetings. This
is what we're doing now, Okay, Oh my god. Yeah
they Elliott Freeman just said they went to the GM meetings.
They all played golf and they got nothing done.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Something.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
What they're in man Alapan, Florida, just swinging the club around,
sing at the Ritz Carlton, Yeah, lots getting down there.
Oh they said, Oh, we talked about three on threes,
We talked about gold interference. But yeah, we think everything's
good as is.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Of course, hockey's the hottest thing it's been of all time.
Why would they want to change anything? Other than maybe
my three on three change that I think they should do.
But we'll talk about that another time, because we're talking
about the GM scheduling, and I think, yes, the league
should get back to I don't love that we're starting
later and later and finishing later and later, but I
(14:55):
do understand that based on TV ratings, they're trying to
find that sweet spot where they're not having a battle
with football or baseball. And that's a tough thing. But
I think I think that if the game keeps getting
built the way it's getting built, I think they can
throw that out and just go on their own schedule,
because if we bring in enough fans, it doesn't matter.
We're not gonna lose people to football and baseball. We're
(15:16):
gonna become our own thing. So I would like to
see I liked when the finals finished on my birthday
June ninth, versus like June twenty fifth, June twenty sixth. Now,
I just feel like two months before training camps just
tough for everybody, and it's tough for the players. And
you know now that you have these which obviously the
Four Nations was a raging success, and then you have
(15:37):
the Olympics, next year, and you're gonna have the World
Cup of Hockey. These are crazy events that are amazing,
and I think the players really like them, but they
come at such a the only place you can put
them is after January or February whatever it is, in
the middle of the season. But then you're gonna invite
injuries and you're gonna invite some guys getting fatigued, and
(15:57):
I don't love that, but it is what it is,
and it grows the game, and that's the most important thing.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
So there's my answer. Sucking.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
So the answers are there's no answer. Essentially, we have
to eat these best of the best tournaments. Why I
was short in the league, so you just have to
have games being played June twenty eighth.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
One hundred percent. Why I was sleeping when you were
talking asking me that question. Is this scripted or unscripted?
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Okay, so that was an unscripted answer. I was hoping
for something better, if I'm being honest.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
But what do you mean, what do you want me
to say, Oh, let's just have the season start at
June and finish.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Give me a sixty game season.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Do something, why too? I mean, you do what hockey.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
June twenty eighth. Insane, that's insane.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
If games ship, they should go back to training camp
in September and finish earlier, start earlier, finish earlier.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
There you go, there's an answer that's that's constructive advice.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Do you want my answer forget about it?
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Coming up next after this break and NHL n scripted,
Dylan Strom, what's it like having a bird's eye view
right now to the great Chase? Strom will tell us
and what has been a great season for him and
the Capitols, And yes, Alexander Ovechkin, that's next. Our first
(17:10):
guest was drafted third overall by the Arizona Counties in
twenty and fifteen. After being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks
in twenty eighteen, he signed with the Washington Capitals in
twenty twenty two. He is now one of the top
players on the best team in hockey this season. Ladies
and gentlemen, Dylan Strom here in NHL unscripted, Dylan, good
to see you.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Thanks for having me, boys, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
We're gonna get into the Great Chase and all that
into a second, but just being on this Capitols team
right now, a team that is hurtling towards one hundred
points top spot in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
How much fun has this season been?
Speaker 6 (17:43):
I mean, it's been a ton of fun. I've never
been on a you know, a team as good as
this in the NHL. You know, It's it's nice to
have that team confidence where you go into every game
expecting to win, even when we're down in the game.
I feel like we have the you know, the confidence
that we're that we're gonna get you know, a couple
of goals, or we're going to get at least some chances.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
And our goaltending has been incredible this year.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
So I feel from top to bottom, we got a
you know, a really good, uh good group of guys
and and uh on a team that you know, we
we don't really take any games off, which is nice
to see, and and it feels like we're in every game.
So it's been a ton of fun. And uh, I know,
the best part is just getting started.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Stromer.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
It's so good to have you on and watching the
evolution of your game from when I played with you
in Arizona to now is just incredible. I mean, you
tied your career high last night, and what's that like
for you, you know, because there's times in your career
where you did battle adversity and and being a high
draft pick and and going through all those struggles. But
now just kind of being so comfortable in your game
(18:43):
and understanding exactly who you are. How where was that
shift in the mindset?
Speaker 6 (18:48):
Yeah, I mean, for sure, it's it's it's tough when
you you know, you have these expectations that you put
on yourself, and you know you want to do really well,
and you know, a team you know, puts a lot
of faith in you to draft you that high, especially
in such a good draft, and unfortunately it just never
worked out out there. I mean, I'm happy they got
a you know, a really good player you know, out
of the situation and a guy that's still you know,
(19:09):
playing for that organization. Obviously they switched over to Utah now,
but but Schmaltz is doing really well there. So you know,
you definitely have doubts about yourself when things aren't going
well or when you're not playing, or know, whatever the
reason may be. But just definitely since I got to Washington,
definitely just feel feel more comfortable, feel you know, feel
(19:29):
like I you know, I had you know, a purpose
to to be on the team and where they saw
me fit and when you're going through free agency, it's weird,
like I never really expected to to go through it
at you know, that early, especially when you're you're still
a restricted free agent and then you don't get qualified,
so it kind of hits you pretty fast. And then
you know, sometimes when a team just gives you that,
you know, that chance, they they definitely, uh, you know,
(19:50):
had some really good things to say about me and
and Sabby where they you know, kind of told me
beforehand where they where they saw me fitting in and
where they kind of saw things going. So I feel
like when you hear that sometimes it just it kind
of gives you that confidence to just just be yourself
and and be the player that you know you can be.
And especially when you got guys here that have won
Stanley Cups and have been around the block, and you know,
the success this team's had I think I think in
(20:11):
Obie's career, I think they've missed the playoffs like maybe
two or three times, maybe you know, in twenty years,
it's pretty incredible. So you know, when you're around winners
and you're around you know, guys that have done it
for a long time. It just it kind of makes
you know your your transition pretty seamless. And that's what
it's been for me so far.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
Here.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Yeah, you signed that one years deal with Washington, and
really your career has changed. You mentioned Ov and the
Svechkin great chase, which is captivated all of us. My
friend James Datie Tessen point out of years ago what
might have been the most remarkable Think about a Vetchkins.
For years, his water bottle was loaded with doctor pepper.
Can you confirm or deny does he still do that?
Speaker 5 (20:46):
I think it's coke. I don't.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
I don't know if he used to be doctor pepper
or not, but yeah, that's definitely uh uh.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
He loves his coke.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
You know, during the between the periods and on the benches,
he doesn't drink it. I don't think all the time,
but you know, when he comes off and I guess
when he needs that little burst of energy or something,
uh just uh, you know, grabs a couple of swigs
of coke and he's right back out there.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
So, I mean, what the guy's doing is just incredible.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
And and the way he goes into each game, and
and the way teams defend against him, It's something that
I've never I've never seen before.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
I play with some pretty good players.
Speaker 6 (21:16):
And and McDavid and Kane and Taves and you know
guys that you know, our our elite, you know, top
of the league players in the NHL or whatever league
that they've been in. But you know, you don't see
too many teams defending against the guy the way that
teams defend against ov. I mean even five on five,
you know, they pretty much have a guy on him
the whole time. So it's definitely you know, poses his
(21:38):
challenges and I think he kind of just shows what
he's doing is all the more impressive. I mean, I
think he has like ten power play goals this year
and every single power player guy's just consistently staying on
him the whole time. So it's it's, uh, you know,
the way he gets open, and uh, you know, it's
been a lot of fun to be a part of.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
And and now I.
Speaker 6 (21:55):
Know, we got fourteen games left here to get to
get eight goals, but we're working towards that, and you know,
if it doesn't happen, we got we got eighty two
next year to to to figure it out.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Russian machine don't break, that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
But I mean talk about your your guys' chemistry, because
do you guys have a lot of chatter and it
take you did it take you some time to figure
him out and figure out where he's gonna be because,
like you say, you know, there's always somebody on him,
so you really have to find that window. And you
know before you was Nick Backstrom, And have you had
any conversations with him or did he approach you a
little bit to be like, hey, this is kind of
(22:29):
where over likes it because he is a particular guy,
like he is.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Very unique and where he needs the puck.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
But also it's like he's so elite that you can't
get it to him anywhere and he's gonna find the net.
So how how has that been in like the chatter
between you two?
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Yeah, I would say it definitely took a little bit
at first.
Speaker 6 (22:46):
I feel like it took a little bit to kind
of figure out, just because when I was in Chicago,
I was playing a lot with Kane, and you know,
Kane is definitely a guy who carries the puck more
and wants the puck on his stick, and you know,
kind of is the the play driver of the line,
and then coming to Washington, it's pretty much the puller
off it. Like he wants you to have it on
your stick. He wants to be the one to get
(23:08):
open passes, no backhand passes. He definitely, uh, you know,
we we've we've had lots of conversations. It was honestly
probably three or four games until you know, we got
put on a line together, and you know, you get
all the Ozone draws, you get all the you know.
Speaker 5 (23:25):
The the good chances to score and the power play time.
Speaker 6 (23:28):
And it was nice to get to see him in
back he you know, play together for a little bit.
I know, a vacuum only played like fifty games or
sixty games maybe when I was here through through my time,
but even just seeing them together and it's kind of
seeing how they they work, and you know the obviously
we watch a lot of film here, so the you know,
the passes that he makes and the kind of the
(23:50):
team that he does. I don't think anyone's as good
as a passer as Backstrom, and I'm not sure anyone
ever will be, especially to Obie in that sense. But
they're trying to just watch them and see how they
work together, and especially in the power play where uh,
you know, it looks like there's I don't know, I'm
sure you guys seen some of the videos where always
kind of just standing there with his stick across his
across his waist and then next thing, you know, you know,
(24:11):
the pucks in the back of the net. And I
learned a lot from from Kuznetsov too, because you know,
the way they kind of can play together. I feel
like the Russians have a have a way of playing
their own brand of hockey, and you know, to see
them kind of you know, communicate on the ice and
the way they did it, it was fun to watch it
and fun to be a part of being on the
power play with those two guys, uh, Kouzi and Ovi.
(24:31):
Was was something that I learned a law from it
and just try to continue on with that that kind
of tradition.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah, Dylan, you don't want to put the car before
the horse. But as you said, hopefully this record does
get broken this year. Have you guys discussed any potential
plans of what to do? Are you gonna storm the
ice like brave Heart?
Speaker 6 (24:49):
Well, I know on goal eight hundred, we did, and
eight oh two we did, which was obviously to the
two most recent milestones, So I would assume something like that.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
Yeah, I know they've talked about how Batman and uh, you.
Speaker 6 (25:03):
Know, wing Gratzky are gonna be in the bi you know,
when he has I think when he has five to
go and and and counting. So, I mean, I don't
really know. I've definitely thought about it a ton of
what's gonna happen. You know, we talked a little bit
about here, like you know, what's who's gonna get the puck,
how much security is going to be there. You know,
he takes pretty much everything he has after he scores,
especially now, and keeps it for himself or keeps it
(25:23):
in his museum or wherever he does with it. We
don't really know what he does with it. I'm sure
we'll find out one day. But he takes all his jersey.
You gotta sign his jerseys, Uh, sign his jersey if
you get an assist on a goal.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
He keeps everything.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
So no, it's I mean, it's almost hard to grasp
when you're kind of in it because it's like, you know,
obviously he's eight goals away, which is insane.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
But you know, eight goals is a lot for anyone
to get.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
I mean that it's still a lot, and it's not
a lot for him, but you know, we're hoping that
he gets you know, we're hoping that he has a
couple of you know, two goal games and it you know,
it gets a little bit you know, more within reach.
But no, it's it's been incredible, and I think it's
only going to get crazier. I mean, you we our
crowd is chanting Ov with three minutes left in the game,
like hoping the other team pulls their goalie.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
I mean, the building is just crazy.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
We were in San Jose and I think like half
the arena was standing up when he scored in San
Jose and and it's just like people want to see
him score. He scored at MSG a week and a
half ago, and the building was shanning Ov like it's
just you know, things that just don't happen on a
regular basis are happening, and it's it's it's cool to
be a part of.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
Well, like any other player, it's like, you know, eight,
eight goals in fourteen games, like that's hard for anybody.
And they're like, yeah, he's gonna get it this year,
Like we're at the network, Yeah, what what day is
he getting it?
Speaker 3 (26:36):
I'm like, he's got to get eight. I'm like, that's yeah,
I know, I know, yeah, you're playing.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
But talk about that is like as a team, like,
because you guys have have been just so laser focused
and confident all year. You guys have been you know,
wired to wire for me, the best team in the league.
And has it been a big large in part because
of the ov chas or is it just because the
belief in the room and and you know, seeing that
Brian McClellan and the brain truster in Washington are just
(27:02):
kind of putting a good product down the ice for
you guys and trying to be competitive.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
I think it would be a combination of all the things.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
I think, you know, when when Ovi scores a goal,
it definitely energizes the whole building, energizes our team, and
we seem to get so much extra life from that.
And then you know, obviously with him getting hurt in
November there, you know, I thought our team did a
really good job of kind of you know, not letting it,
you know, hinder our season. You know, he had fifteen
(27:32):
goals in eighteen games at the time, and when when
when you lose a guy that has that, that's obviously
that's pretty basically a goal of game. And so when
you lose a goal a game from your lineup, you
you'd think things would dip a little bit. But I
think kind of like you said, with with McClellan and
Chris Patrick and the what they've done with you know,
adding the pieces that we've added, like you know, you
know Chicky pretty well obviously, and he's just been a
monster back on the blue line, Like he has eighteen goals,
(27:53):
and you know, he's just so good with the puck.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
He's got so much confidence. He you know, he uses
confidence and.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
Then he add you know, du Bois and how good
he's been for us and him and protests have have
been you know, I don't know the exact numbers, but
I got to think that they're they're up there with
with the elite of the NHL.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
I five one, five.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
And oh yeah, what is what is he doesn't have
a five on it doesn't have a power play goal
and he's got like five goals.
Speaker 6 (28:16):
It's yeah, yeah, yeah, he's he's built in a lab
protest for sure, he's a he's a horse. He just
broke the record last night for most points ever by
a bela Russian. I believe, I believe in one season.
So I mean, the guy's ridiculous. We we've had some
great pickups, even like the the glue guys on our team,
like Brandon Newham is a guy we picked up from
Colorado and he was on Minnesota before that. He's just
(28:39):
I had no idea about this guy before, but I
can't imagine our team is the way we are without
him on our team. Just one of those guys that
you love to have in your room, just you know,
barking and you know, chirping everyone and fighting at any
time someone will say yes to him. So it's just
it brings your team to life. And you know, it's
it's a combination of lots of things. But it's been
heck of a ride and and hopefully we can you know,
(28:59):
cap it off with you know, maybe a President's Trophy
and and the Great Chase coming to a close.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
You you talked about chick there, and and I have
to touch a little bit on Jacob Chickenen and all
of the things, all of the things he does off
ice What is he on right now? Is he on
the steak and beef towel or is he doing a
kettleball circuit?
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Or is he doing cartwheels? What's he got going on?
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (29:20):
God, yeah, he's beef tallow is the one thing that
that gets brought up a lot here.
Speaker 5 (29:25):
No, no, no oils. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
I honestly don't know. He's a new thing every day.
I heard yesterday that he's no light bulbs. He's doing
a candle candle light in his house. Now, yeah, that's
what That's what his saying. Thing was yesterday, So he
was on he was onto a bees wax candles, is
what I heard.
Speaker 5 (29:42):
Is great for you. So now now we're we're all
talking about bees wax candles.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
No light bulbs in the rink, whatever it takes.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
That's nice to him, Like you can't you can't have
it one way. But I don't know. That's a topic
for a different day.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
But like there's lights everywhere, Like what are you talking
about no light bulbs?
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Speaking of lights and being in the spotlight.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Uh, Dylan, you've been used to it because you know,
play with contract David, the erie otters, the o HL
what was it like having so much attention again and
run a teammate like that as you're seeing now with
the Vechkin.
Speaker 6 (30:10):
Yeah, I mean the situations are are are pretty similar.
Obviously you know a little bit greater of a stage now,
but you know when you're in that moment and you're
on a junior team and things are you know, pretty
crazy around the draft and you know there's talk like
he's the next Crosby and and things like that. So
it was definitely crazy back then. You know, we we
had a lot of fun. We had a you know,
(30:30):
an unbelievable team. We made some great pickups of the
deadline that year, and we had a lot of fun.
We made a run to the finals in the OHL
that year, and you know it was awesome to be
a part of it and kind of see a whole
city kind of get behind a team and you know
how that worked. So definitely some similarities with you know,
the kind of the superstardom you know type type people
(30:51):
and players. But I think just you know, seeing it
now and seeing it at you kind of a national
level and seeing it, you know, people are we have
people that come out of you know after practice and
there's people from there's people from Austria, from Germany. Someone
had to sign last night said I'm from Korea here
to see OV and like it's like, you know, people
(31:11):
are coming from everywhere near and far to see this
guy play.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
So it's no, it's cool.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
I want to touch on you and family specifically, because
you know, I was watching a couple of the your
interviews last night and doing prep work like I never
did when I played hockey, but now on the interview
signed to do a lot of prep work. But I
want to just talk. I know you're a superstitious guy.
You're very superstitious. You're very particular about what you do
on game day, and it has to be kind of
(31:37):
very almost the same thing every time. Has that changed
now having kids you have two kids now, or or
have you found a way to kind of create like
a superstition with your kids and with your family with
your wife, Taylor, because I know how hard you know,
I never played when I When I played, I didn't
have kids. I was, you know, just with my my
wife now. But I always found it so impressive guys
(31:59):
getting up and playing and having energy after you know,
being up with kids or having to deal with with children.
So how is that superstition for you changed?
Speaker 6 (32:07):
Honestly, it's it's you know, you kind of just adapt
as you go. I definitely I am a superstitious guy
for sure. Like you said, I try to do the
same thing on most game days, you know. Now, my
my part of my superstition is is you know, dropping
my daughter off for school, on the way to the
rink and on the way home from morning escape picking
her out from school.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
So the timing kind of works pretty perfectly.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
You know, when you play so many games at the
same time, you kind of just fall into kind of
a rhythm of doing the same thing. And then when
things are going well, it's even easier to keep that,
to keep that going, I guess where that's where the
superstition comes into play. But yeah, I mean they try
to eat the same thing, try to you know, nap
it there around the same time. But things are gonna
come up. And I think that's what what having kids
(32:51):
has taught me is, you know, you know, some days
your kids are gonna be sick. Some days you know
they're they're gonna be you know, they're gonna be throwing
a fit, they're gonna be you know, wanted to play
with you. They're gonna be wanting to do different things
that you don't normally do. So as much as you
can keep the same, you try to. But I definitely
think with having kids has taught me a little bit
of you know, there's going to be curveballs thrown at
(33:11):
yet at any time, and you just got to adjust.
I remember earlier this year, I took my took my
my two daughters. My wife had had a doctor's appointment
or something, and and I had to take my two
daughters to the dentist on a game day. And I
didn't think I would ever do that in my life,
but you know, just left the rink a little early,
picked her out from school, went to the dent went
to dent went to the dentist, got home, you know,
brought my meal home, had it at home this time,
(33:33):
and and ended up having a pretty decent game.
Speaker 5 (33:35):
So, uh, you know, sometimes you just got to adjust
in the fly.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
Yeah, I think this is a final line hypertine, routines
and superstition. Like I think we're describing as a routine,
superstition is like a rabbits foot in your locker.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Like I have.
Speaker 6 (33:48):
That's probably one of our main conversations in our team.
It was what's the routine and what's the superstition? So
that's yeah, you know, some guys I won't name names,
but some guys that come in and have to line
up their name tag that's so perfectly in line with
their stall, we would say that's more of a superstition.
But superstition okay, or like having you know, a couple
of cry baby gumballs before the game is a superstition.
But routines more like warm up and and maybe what
(34:10):
time you get to the rink and things like that,
were probably that actually matter as opposed to you know,
your superstitions.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
But you know, we have a lot of fun with that.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Here I wanted to ask us, well, again, like Jad
was saying, as part as your family mean, it's it's amazing,
you know, just the journey you've had and an older
brother and Ryan, who plays for the Ducks. But the
biggest goal in the family, of course, your younger brother
Mats the game winning goal overtime game six last season
to win the.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Calder Cup for the Hershey Bears. Where were you when
he scored it?
Speaker 5 (34:37):
Well?
Speaker 6 (34:37):
I think a lot of people that talk about that
now forget that that was also at the same time
as the same day as Game seven of the Cup final,
so definitely got a little overshadowed there. And that moment
I remember, we were I was at home, went over
to my brother's house, older brother, Ryan's house, and he
had a bunch of buddies over. A few of my
buddies came over and there's probably ten of us in
(34:58):
the basement watching and we had the you know, the
NHL game on the big screen and mask game on the.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
Side, not not a smaller TV, but on this little
side TV.
Speaker 6 (35:07):
We had a top on the side, and it just
so happened that the overtime just was just about to start,
and I think the the NHL game was between the
second and third in the intermission, so we someone made
a comment, one of Ryan's, one o Ryan's buddies made
a comment like, you know, Matt's. Matt's had a little
bit of a knack of scoring some big goals. He
scored the the Ohl Cup winning goal for the minor
(35:30):
midget tournament in his in his in his last year
of minor hockey, he scored a few Ohl Playoff overtime
winning goals, and someone made a comment like, you know, Matt, Matt,
Matt's got that knack to scored the big goal.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
I'm sure enough.
Speaker 6 (35:43):
About two minutes into overtime he gets on the ice
and the puck kind of just scores to him.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
And I mean we were going banana lands in the basement.
We were yelling at his kids.
Speaker 6 (35:50):
Ryan's kids woke up upstairs, you know, get here, kids crying,
dogs were barking.
Speaker 5 (35:55):
It was, it was, it was unbelievable.
Speaker 6 (35:56):
So I know he couldn't couldn't be more proud of
him and what he's done. He's he's had a you know,
a tough road in in pro hockey and kind of
just found his way and found a little niche in
Hershey and he loves it there and you know, the
place loves them and they're they have so much fun.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
They're such a good team, such.
Speaker 6 (36:12):
A well run organization, and you know, for him to
get that goal, I mean it was just like, you know,
you can't even you can't even dream about that stuff.
That's like, you know, next to winning and Stanley Cup,
I mean, there's there's not much, not much higher than
you get in hockey than that, so it's it's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
Did that goal help him become or get close to you?
And being the favorite in the family to your parents, because.
Speaker 6 (36:33):
Well, I like to say my mom My mom says
that I'm the favorite because we're both middle child, middle children,
and I think, you know, there's there's definitely days where
Ryan's a favorite and we're MAT's the favorite. But you know,
as a middle child and there's someone that just cares
so much about everyone, I like to say that I'm
the favorite, you know, consistently three sixty five.
Speaker 4 (36:51):
Just humbly saying I care about everyone. I'm the only
one that cares about everyone.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
I love that. That's awesome till we know.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
The real turning point in your career is when Jason
Burrs came to Arizona in twenty seventeen.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
I need your best JD story.
Speaker 5 (37:04):
Man, I got it. I mean I was.
Speaker 6 (37:07):
I was pretty young and pretty immature at those times.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
He's remained that way, so I'm still there.
Speaker 6 (37:15):
I I just go back to that Halloween party. I
know you remember that pretty well.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
I think it was at Smithy's house.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
I want to say, I think that was my my
first year there.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
You had when I remember when Richie dressed up as Chick.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Do you remember that, yes, vaguely, because yes, Richie dressed
up as Chick.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
Was it was like his first couple of.
Speaker 6 (37:37):
Games in the league, and and he he was like
always had his shirt off.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
We always joking, and he was like a big, true ambassador.
Speaker 6 (37:44):
And I know that some of the older guys had
had a good time with Chick, you know, just Richardson
had the spray on abs and and had everything going
in as such an unreal outfit. I remember Mike Smith
was in like a golden like dodgeball costume or something,
and I think I was with Fisher and Devorak and
we were just, you know, we were just having a
good time.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
We'll just we'll say that. But I remember that Halloween
party being being hilarious.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
Well, that Arizona team.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
I mean, we may not have won a ton of games,
we had fun doing it, that's for damn sure.
Speaker 6 (38:15):
Because it was a good mix of young, younger guys
and older guys. And like I said, I was definitely
definitely immature and in that time and just you know,
kind of playing my first couple of games in the league,
and I couldn't believe that this was what the lifestyle
was like, and you know, going to the rink and
shorts every day and definitely enjoying life.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
You know, probably probably a little too much at that time.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Well you had it.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
You had an affinity for Burberry at that time. I
don't know if you still got it, but Burberry was
always draped on you and every ass I was like,
this kid is just always in Burberry.
Speaker 5 (38:46):
I know, I did love Burberry.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
I'd like to think I've grown into a little bit
more of you know, maybe some different brands, but I
definitely still got the old Birdberry going on. I got
the belt still, I got the I got the flannel
still still in the closet somewhere, maybe a couple of
coats now.
Speaker 5 (38:59):
But I love that brand.
Speaker 4 (39:02):
It's the classic Asian outfit, Asian older man outfits.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
Classic.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
Uh go ahead, gitty, whathever you got to wrap up?
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Keep it rolling right now, buddy. Honestly, it's so fun
to watch you. I you know, I followed your career
very closely, had a soft spot for you after playing
with you, and it's fun to watch you play on
this team being as dominant as you are, as I
knew you could be just the way you move the puck,
so keep it going, and uh, honestly, it's it's just
the beginning of the run for you.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
So yeah, hopefully I got I got a question for you.
Are are you?
Speaker 6 (39:35):
Are you on the Capitol's Bandwidgen, because you know sometimes
when they leave like jerseys out for people to sign
in the in the in the dressing room, and we
got it. We got a jersey sitting over there right now,
and it's a Demurse Washington Capitol's jersey, number seventeen on
the back that that asked to be teams signed. So
I didn't know if that was going straight to you.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
I don't know. I don't know. I don't number seven.
Speaker 4 (39:56):
It's my long lost or it's my father trying to
get in there. It's Darryl Demurs trying to get a
jersey I had. I had the you know, I was
so hard on I mean, I wasn't hard on him,
but on Peer Luke Dubois and I had a peer
Luke glue Bois shirt made because I love that shirt.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Isn't that great?
Speaker 4 (40:14):
I'll send it to you because I have it here
at the at the at the house and I'll send
me your address and I'll mail it to you. But
because we're all around the network now calling him Pierre
Luke glue Bought. I mean, we love this team and
we just love all the pieces that have been put
together there just it's it's you guys have a little
bit of everything.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
So it's fun.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
And I love that you guys love Doham because he's
just an animal. I skated with him a little bit
in the summers in Florida, and I mean the guy
works out like six times a day.
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Yeah, he's he's he's unbelievable. I mean, the guy he
doesn't stop. Like it's like we just got here. It's
nine o'clock in the morning, and we get here and
I can hear him like in the dressing room, just
like the loudest guy, like smiling, laughing already, like joking
with guys.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
Like he doesn't shut it off. And you need guys
like that.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
I love it, buddy. Well, good luck the rest of
the way. Big kisses to the family, and uh you'll
get that Curry High.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
Brother appreciate it. Thanks guys, all.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
Right, Thanks Dylan, this was great, buddy, all right, Thanks
once again at Dylan strou He was fantastic, all right,
Cinephile in sixty in honor Saint Patrick's Day. Irish theme
movies We've Got My Left Foot, the Great Daniel day
Lewis movie, In the Name of the Father, The Great
Deal of day Lewis Movie, The Gangs of New York,
(41:26):
The Great Deal of day Lewis Movie. I'm all about
ddl Okay, so of my favorite actors. Any Irish themed
He's there for me.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
How about You?
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Belfast a great film by Kenneth Browny won the Oscar
for Original Screenplay.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Is there an Irish theme.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Movie, JD that you specifically love when you think of
Saint Patrick's Day, um Miller's Crossing, Great Cone Brothers movie, Gangsters.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
I mean Gangs of New York. It's it's hard to
beat nice. Yeah, it's really it comes to them. Irish
Irish wish By with Lindsay Lohan is one.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
I'm not familiar with that one. I'm just kidding the
band She's a finish here in Yeah, I thought it
was a.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
Really funny movie calling Farrell Brendan Gleeson great.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Yeah, I mean Brendan Gleeson is probably in a lot
of these because he does play a great little Irish character, Iritish.
Would you consider The Depadded Irish?
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Yeah, The Depatt, It's definitely an Irish movie.
Speaker 4 (42:13):
Jack Dick Patt accident. Yeah, you gotta love Jack Nicholson.
Probably one of the most unhinged performances I think in
that he was so good.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
Yeah, so I love The Departed, but yeah, I got
this wreathing.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Rat.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
My buddy Ryan Ricillo, who spent a lot of time
in Boston, he said to me once The depart is
a great, bad movie, Like, what does that mean?
Speaker 3 (42:35):
He goes.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
I don't think it's great.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
What do you mean he goes because Nicholson's two over
the top, he's overacting too much and the accents are bad.
And I said, no, No, it's a great movie. It's got
outsized performances. Yes, it's larger than life, it's flamboyant, and
yes it's not scors He's best movie.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
You should have won ten Oscars before that. But still
a great movie.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
I mean, Damon DiCaprio, the whole cast, you're a farmiga
speaking of Saint Patrick's did though, I love what you
did on air? Brian Boyle, who I mean if I
said to somebody Irish Catholic. I'm like, I'm thinking of Boiler,
who's got just just Irish as a guest like that.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
I love that, No, but I love Boilers.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Look, but I look what you did, because you do
not have children yet, you wore a shirt which my
kids would appreciate.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
And that was Patrick of SpongeBob Fame.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
Saint Patrick T. Patrick, the voice of I.
Speaker 4 (43:14):
Looked like somebody that has zero Irish heritage at all.
And Boiler looked like he was part of the IRA.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
Yeah, boy, Boiler looked at from The Crying Game, one
of my favorite movies.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
He looked like he was Iron the Eye.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
He was either in the IRA or he was on
a skyscraper in New York City building and was without
any harness with the baggiest pants of all time.
Speaker 1 (43:35):
Yeah he had one of the other His pants were
so baggy they called him trousers.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
Like remember that that.
Speaker 4 (43:42):
It was like he purposely wore it, and I had
no idea that those pants were a thing. And he's like,
I'm like, how comfortably are He's like, I could not
be more comfortable sitting down right now. He always wears
like a tight pant. But I said, like, there's a movie.
There's an Irish movie. I have to I have to
find that. It was about like an Irish gangster part
of the IRA and he was like going up against
(44:03):
the mob and stuff that I can't remember what it is,
but I'll figure it out.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
In GI have any memories of playing on Saint Patricks Day.
I thought it was pretty cool. By the way, being
at the Leafs game, it ain't easy being green. I
had a green suit. Blake Bowld and Andy Patrillo All
Force is the only guy I couldn't get in the spirit.
There's a slight hint of green in my tig. That's
not Hickey wore green suit. Jody Shelley dark green suit.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
The Saint Pat's the jerseys.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
The green was phenomenal. How about you playing on Saint
Patrick's Day? People just getting hammered on guinness after the game.
Speaker 4 (44:28):
Well, I always tried to play drunk on Saint Patrick's
Day in the NHL, and I did.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
That another two on one. What the hell is to
hers doing?
Speaker 2 (44:36):
Joining the rush again?
Speaker 4 (44:37):
He's all over the place. We don't know what he's doing.
This is a bold strategy by him. This is a
new form of playing on his ankles. Uh yeah, and
I you know, I always I always thought I did
that pretty successfully playing drunk on Saint Patty's Day.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
No, I can't.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
I mean other than the jerseys you wear him and
warm up's. Like I always liked those cool commemorative jerseys,
like they have the military night and all that. I
think they're so I think there's so cool. They're always
a cool design. And yeah, you know you always laugh
at like what's your name on the back because they'll
put like O demurz or oh goldgask here.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
It's great. Yeah, yeah, so they kind of make you again,
are wee Irish?
Speaker 2 (45:17):
Lass?
Speaker 3 (45:19):
I think that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
I love the fact he'll get it the spirit of
being Irish. What are the thought here?
Speaker 3 (45:24):
That way of drinking. Yeah, that's what it is.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
It's bass, a big booze and some dirty limericks along
the way.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
Yeah, gotta give love to people in the media and
long tim Capital's played by play man Joe Benanati, who's
gonna be on duty for Alexander of Vashkin's record breaking goals.
So Ben Andanti was going to get snubbed if the
goal came during a national sports broadcast, but the NHL
and Monumental Sports Network, how about that for a name.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
They've come to an agreement aligned.
Speaker 1 (45:45):
The Capital's TV home to produce their own broadcast the
capitals four remaining national telecasts, So to be clear, Kenny
Albert or my buddy John Forsen with Turner, or John
McDonough with the ESPN or Bob was Shoes and they'll
be calling the game. But Joe will get to call
the game. He'll be produced in house there for Washington.
It's a nice one went there for a guy who
really deserves it. What's some the great moments ever in
hockey history.
Speaker 4 (46:05):
Yeah, I think it should be him. I think it
should be him nationally as well. No disrespect to any
of the other commentators, Nash is what you're.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Just gonna tell Kenny Albert take a knee. You can't
do that to Kenny.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Listen.
Speaker 4 (46:18):
I fans of every single one of them. I have
their phone numbers, but I would tell them. I think
when it comes to a record, a personal record, and
especially a guy likes that's been there forever, Uh, it
has to go to the guy that called his first
game there, and we'll call probably his last game in
all of his big moments, why not have it be him.
(46:38):
That's the voice, that's that's the highlight, that's gonna He's
gonna show his kids, kids and Ovechkin that is And
you know, any guy that played on that team is
going to say, that's the announcer that was with us
all the you know, throughout the whole season. Because the
thing that people don't realize and I didn't realize even
when I played, and now being on the media side
(47:00):
of things and traveling with the San Jose Sharks and
working with Dan Ruzenowski, Randy Hahn, Drumenda and just amazing
commentators and analysts. They are part of the team and
they're as big a fan of the team as any
other person that's paying for tickets. They support the team,
they support the players, they hate when.
Speaker 3 (47:19):
Guys get traded.
Speaker 4 (47:20):
They celebrate the wins, they celebrate the losses and not
celebrate the losses. They more than the losses, and they
just do it in a way that I think those
are the little things that they deserve and they should
get because they're so passionate and nothing against the national guys,
you know, Sean mcdont. They're all great FORESLN, Boba Schuz
and they're awesome, awesome Kenny Alberts, they're amazing announcers. And
(47:41):
yes it's you know, ESPN, TNT, all those things, Turner Sports.
They're gonna get their crack at it.
Speaker 3 (47:46):
But it should be his call.
Speaker 4 (47:48):
That's the one that that kind of lives on and
stands the test of time because he's the one that's
been with them for so long throughout his whole career.
Speaker 1 (47:55):
So well, it'll be a happy metiing because at least
he'll be calling the game for the Capitals, producing the game,
and of course will have the national call as well, so.
Speaker 2 (48:01):
People will be able to listen to both calls.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Whatever a vention doesn't do you get the As we
close up shop, how about little jdpov?
Speaker 2 (48:07):
What do you got?
Speaker 3 (48:08):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (48:09):
POV three Because in honor of the GM meetings, they
talked about three on three extending the time to ten minutes,
and there was talk that Beban doesn't like that for injuries.
But my three on three change, I think it needs
to be adjusted a little bit. Listen, I'm a fan
of it. It's fun. You see best on best three
on three, the most skilled guys going at it. But
(48:31):
I do not like when the guys bring it out
of the blue line and they just keep reloading and reloading,
like the Soviet Union back in the day, the Iron Curtain.
I just don't like that. I think there needs to
be a change to that to make it a little
bit more faster paced. And I think my change and
my thought for it would create more offense. People might think, no,
it won't, Yes it will. Once you cross the blue line,
(48:53):
the offensive blue line, and you enter into the zone,
you are not allowed to bring the puck out of
the zone. You cannot wind it back, you cannot bring
it out, you cannot pass the puck out. You have
to stay inside the offensive blue line and attempt to score.
Because what that's gonna do is it's gonna make it
three on three, close ice blue line in and what's
gonna happen is guys can't, you know, sit back and
(49:15):
keep winding back so when there are turnovers, it'll be
quick to offense. It'll be two on one after two
on one, and it'll probably quicken up the pace of
three on three and make it, I think a little
bit even more exciting than it already is. So that's
my pov. Take it, digest it. If you don't like it,
suck it.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
She call the play dead. If they leave the zone,
that's take a reverse off side. Just want to be clarified,
that's what you're looking for.
Speaker 4 (49:36):
The ges, Yes, you lose possession or now you don't
lose possession.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
It seems a little complicated.
Speaker 4 (49:43):
What you come into the blue line and then you
can't pull it back out of the blue line.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
I just think that's complicated.
Speaker 2 (49:49):
I'm just telling you.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
I think guys would be like, no, I want to
go like that, because they're so conditioned as you say
to be like, no, I want to kind of reset.
I can't reset now I'm stuck. I'm in this area.
Speaker 3 (49:56):
Sorry, you lose it.
Speaker 2 (49:58):
I'm contained.
Speaker 4 (49:59):
It's a penalty. If you do that, it's a penalty.
So three you're gonna call it penalty.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
The guy goes back, Yeah, wow, course you're doing.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
Just shorten that ice so much for a two hundred.
Speaker 4 (50:11):
Fin nine right three on three, make it quick going zone.
Come on, not the whirling dervishes here.
Speaker 1 (50:18):
Uh please let us know what you think of this
potential change here on Jason Ders's social media and we're
