Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
Coming up here In NHL Unscripted, JD wants to clarify
some of the details of his dad's trips lash Carrie
(00:26):
Underwood story last week in danger of going viral.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Just gonna, you know, clean it up.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
A little bit, plus talk about Kyle Paul Mary I
set of filing sixty on the new film coming out
in Netflix this Friday.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
It's called j Kelly.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
It starts George Clean and Adam Sander one of the
best films of the year, plus Lightning Strikes before we
kick things off. Though, finally television history made Verkin Demr's
on NHL Network, and you took full credit rightfully. So
during the post community with the Anthony Declare of the
New York Islanders, you texted him you're gonna go one
and one and he got the one, A big goal
for Anthony Declaire.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
As you said, you can't keep.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
The duke down. Good stuff. No the duke, don't let
him get hot. Don't let the duke get hot. I
don't know why I texted him, but it was it
was the other day and I saw something on him
and it was like night before the game and I
just reached out, you know, I I try to reach
out to guys, you know, just to say, hey, what's up,
hope you're doing well, and it just said I expect
(01:17):
a one on one tonight, big one for you. And
he was like, all right, I got it. He's like,
I got you. So he scored and it was pretty
It's pretty fun when you have those things, and it's crazy, man,
and sports like, sometimes you're in a slump and it's
not going well and all you need is just somebody
to kind of like reach out and text and say, hey,
you're gonna get one tonight, like you're gonna do it,
don't worry about it. And you know, probably sometimes doesn't happen,
(01:40):
but when it does, it's a good feeling and sometimes
just relaxes you to kind of get that vote of confidence.
Because he's a good player and you know, I think
he's he's very streaky at times, but you know, I
think he had some ups and downs with Patrick Watt
last year, and I think this year, you know, they
have a team that has that have higher aspirations than
(02:01):
they've had in the past. You know, with I think
a lot of you know, they're an upstart team. But
you get Matthew Schaeffer, you got that Shabbah off that's
playing very well right now. You got a mill Hineman
that comes in so you sometimes fall by the wayside.
But good for him getting that goal, you know, especially
after Kyle Palmery got injured, that devastating injury. But it's
(02:22):
a scrappy team.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Man.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
The East is fucking wild right now, Like it's who
knows what's going to happen, you know. In the metro
it's it's on four points separating first and I think,
like sixth, I gotta really look at that. I'm gonna
look at that while I talk to him while you
set up the next question.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
First and six and then I do that too much
now and I don't like it squinting. I was it
five points between first and last in the metro, so
I was, I was, hey in the ballpark, I said
four as four as five. I tell you what, My
my assumed guesses are close.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
They're most of the time wrong, but they're close.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
I mean, if you say I think it's something like
you know, it's a way of hedging it saying I
think it's around there, and then it's close, so then
you're five.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
It's a guy. I think he's a plan of game player.
And the guy is that's fine.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Wait I was. I was looking at headlines while you're
doing our intro. We had tal this fucking guy last night.
He references Napoleon Bonaparte comparing dal lost his headphones, folks,
he lost his headphones laughing there middle of the show,
(03:38):
he goes, I don't even know what it was. You
will remember, you have a better recollection. He says, this
Napoleon Bonaparte comparison.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
On this day in history.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
In eighteen oh four, Napoleon Bonaparte declared himself the Emperor
of France, and I said, meantime, Nathan McKinnon has now
fourteen multi point outings and twelve games is zero one points.
So today we can say Nathan McKinnon is Napoleonic.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
And there's a pause and then we go off fair
after it, Ken Daniko goes, I don't know where you're
going with that one, because you lost this there for
a second. That's what you fucking did. French Revolution. Oh
that was great anyway, I digress.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
We had a blast though, Daniel, Greg guy if you're
gonna hang up for three hours. Not much better than
hanging out with JD and Daniell just watching some hockey.
And to your point, JD, right now in the East,
twelve teams separated by six points. But how about Tampa
Bay if there's one team that started to take over
right now?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
The Atlantic?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
They had won seven or zero for losing the Islanders
last night two to one, but sixteen eight and two record,
And as you said last night on NHL Network, they've
done it without some key pieces here Victor Hedman, Braden Point,
Ryan McDonough, Hagel eight goals in his five game goal
streak that finally ended against the Isles, Kouchroff eighteen points
on the recent nine game point streak. You've spoken a
lot abou how much you love Kouchirov. Do you think
(04:52):
it's now Tampa's division to win? We have big Leafs
Panthers game last night Leafs won. But do you think
the Lightning and now the team to beat in the Atlantic.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
One hundred percent? It's it's crazy knowing and potentially in
the East. I think that the team to beat in
the East, and without missing three of their top four
defenseman missing braid point now, you know, and they're just
doing it in different ways. I mean, they're doing it
defensively as well. The structure has really improved from the
(05:20):
start of the season. I mean, and it's you say structure.
The structure is Vasilevsky, Like Vassilevski's back to his old form.
But you know, they got the best penalty kill in
the NHL right now. And you know, defensively they've done
a lot better than I think people have give them
credit for. And to do that with kind of an
upstart decor and I've set upstart twice. Now, that's that's
(05:40):
so annoying. Get it, God, damn thesaurus Jason. This this
young decor of Charles Destouse and you got Declan Carlisle
and Steven Santini, who's not really a young puppy's been
around for a while, just been a you know, an
HL defenseman that's playing some great hockey. So you know,
(06:01):
credit to John Cooper. This guy just does it in
a year out. I don't think he's one of Jack Adams,
and I think he's just one of the best coaches
in the NHL at just pushing all the right buttons.
So this team is defensively very good. And then up front,
I mean Brandon Hagel, who I thought was leave him
off the Team Canada list. Now I'm like, put him
(06:24):
back on the Team Canada list. Like the Team Canada rosters.
I don't know who's gonna I don't know who's gonna
go where.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
I think it's gonna be very He goes Canadia should
have two teams.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
There should be a kid.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
This is what I'm working with. Last night, he goes,
us say and Canada should both get two teams. I
think that is how it works at the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Finland beats USA two three two.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
But no, the other thing I was, you know, Nick
Paul is not mentioned enough for Tampa Bay. He's a
big stabilizer down the middle. You know, since he's been back,
I think there's six and one and first loss they
had with him in the lineup was last night. But
he's just stabilizes. He provides such a calming factor. Big body,
(07:11):
can play penalty kill you go to that top penalty
kill in the NHL, but he can provide some offense.
And he's kind of a lanky, gangly, big draft that
moves around the ice and It's not overly physical, but
he just good stick, plays well, he's in the right position,
and yeah, this is the team to beat in the
East right now.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Meantime, the Buffalo Sabers got great news as Josh Norris
is back, and I remember he was probably that blockbuster
trade with Dylan Cutsons.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
The problem for Norris Quay simply has been health.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
He just hasn't played much four games going into that game,
but played great. Score twice, add and assist the Sabers
all over the Winnipeg Jets five to one. Buffalo has
been at or near the bottom of the Atlantic. But
as you said, it's so tight right now, you go
to three game win streak. All of a sudden, the
Sabers are potentially a playoff team. They have not made
the playoffs since twenty eleven. I just got back from
being there at that game talking to Lindy Rough, who
(07:58):
incredibly has kept a home in Buffalo since nineteen seventy nine.
He also has a place in Montana, but remarkable Lindy
Ruff has at the same house in Buffalo for thirty
five years. He's the coach for a second go around.
Of course, the legend is a player there it's interesting, JD.
They've got players, especially look at their defense dollyan byrom
Owen Power. I know who's the number one pick from
a week class, But I love Mattia Samuelson, son of
(08:20):
Shell Samuelson, the Great six six Flyers defense was speaking
of Tall and Ragye and Gangly. I know it's a
little crazy, but the Sabers at least have some optimism
if they can get things going and if Norris's health
is there with the great Tage Thompson.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah, a lot of unpack there. You just kind of
mentioned everybody in the team, so I got to kind
of go through the list here.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
How about the three goalie system Uka Peca, lukenan uh Uka,
Who who's caught at the bar the buffalo.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Trying to get a little piece of strange and and
Buffalo's fine as maybe maybe he's with his wife. I
don't know. I don't know if he's married. So don't
quote me on that, folks, keep me out of your dms.
Uh No. I mean, Mitia Samuelson, really nice story. You know,
I think we're all wondering when he's you know, they
paid him all that money, and I think everybody, myself
(09:10):
included was like why they pay him that money. I
don't understand. I haven't seen him play a you know,
a healthy season or even have enough vision and and
and I didn't. I haven't. I don't have enough tape
on him to kind of judge him. But he's a
It's a good player, really good defensive player that has
been their best defenseman. I think night in and night
out as a whole for this season, so better than
(09:32):
Rasmostalling and those guys. Their decor. I like it, but
I think they have too many of the same player.
You know, you got Owen Power boone by him and
Ras Mastalling. It's the same player kind of wrapped in
a different package. I think one of them should get moved.
Owen Power right now is kind of not played great.
He struggled a bit out of that group. He's the outlier,
So I think I would look to move him to
(09:53):
maybe increase because they have all the they have all
the talent in the world. They have all the talent.
Do I think Lindy Rough's the man to, you know,
take them to the promised Land?
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Probably not pumping.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Over Ralph Krueger, Phil Halsey.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah, he's there. Yeah, you know nothing, Phil Housley, no,
and Ralph Krueger, I think the nice guy. But but yeah, Lindy,
I had Lindy and Dallas, you know, and I think
his systems are good. It's decent. Listen, they're they have
a really good team. I'd like to see them have
more structure, but I think that's a coaching thing. So
(10:27):
but again, it's a tough job. Coaches, tough job. Lindy's
there whatever. But going to Josh Norris, I mean, if
this guy could stay healthy, hasn't played over sixty six
games in his career. If this guy can stay healthy,
he's a premier goalscorer, set up guy in the NHL.
It's just it's sad because when you get caught in
(10:48):
that cycle of going under the knife and having surgery
and these injuries, it's hard to kind of you become
a compromised athlete. Trainer once told me. And then you're
always compensating, you know, trying to you know, get healthy
and and make sure that you know your shoulders kind
of a bum shoulder, so you got to overcompensate with
your other shoulder. Then things can happen and your body's
(11:10):
just not used to constantly compensating. So but what that
game against Winnipeg and he didn't even break a sweat
after not playing all season, and just looked so dynamic
and so silky, silky middies, The Silky Life of Walter Midty,
and that was one of my favorite movies. And that
(11:32):
was Josh Norris last night. But yeah, Buffalo, it was more.
I don't know if it was more like I was surprised,
and I think we all know what Buffalo has. I
think the surprising thing is I'm worried about the Winnipeg Jets.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
And they've got one line in one defenseman Schifley, Connor, Vallardi, Morrissey.
Have it counted for sixty percent of their offense in
the last five games, Like there is a complete absence
of secondary scoring. Eergo gd We kept talking about the
third line, how great there were, Mason Appleton's gone. Now
it's literally you're lying it's a very top heavy team
right now.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Oh yeah, we're listening to the broadcast which I was
listening to you guys on Amazon, and uh when Andy
Patrillo called Josh Norris, Adnan, you're in the interview, which
was hilarious.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
I don't know if that's Achary.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
You texted me that I thought she finished it, and
then goes admin like, you know when you finished the
interview that tossed it?
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Did you?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I don't know. I felt like maybe maybe, I don't know.
I'm just looking. I've just butt hurt that I'm not
at the Amazon. Monday night came just a bitter Betty.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Well, listen. I did tell Tate Thompson.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
I saw him after morning skate when the locker might go, hey, man,
you did a great job with Jason Demurs, and uh,
who the hell you're with that day? I think it
was Kevin Weeks on NHL Network. He's like, oh, thanks, man,
I said, yeah, that's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Your wife had cancer. He said yeah. I said where
was the cancer discovery? It was in her knee because
she was a dancer.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
He goes says, that's where she would just always get
check ups, and he was just a random checkup. How
old is she goes, twenty one years old, Jesus twenty
one diagnosed to cancers.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
But dude, it was a one time thing. They've identified it.
She got it done, she said, check ups. You know,
it was every few months after that and now she's
been cleaning for like four years.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
So he's a helple player, help a story. And I
told him a great job with the monsters.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Ain't get up. He's like, oh you like that?
Speaker 2 (13:05):
It was great. JD dropped little Randal on him. They went, DALLASKI, Okay,
I've got cancer in the knee. That's that's crazy. Yeah,
it's it's nunts. But hey, listen, going back to Buffalo there,
they're a team that we constantly expected to do something
with all that talent, and hopefully they can. But again
(13:27):
I'm I'm reserving my expectations. But when they're healthy and
they're playing the right way, they're tough to beat. They
looked fast, man, they looked very very fast, and Winnipeg
looked like shit.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Well that one of the thought here on the Jets.
They didn't have a players only meeting after the lost
Monday night. Could you imagine President's Trophy winner to missing
the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Well, the biggest thing that I noticed, and and maybe
this was on me being a and both of us
actually being Connor Hellibuck haters a little bit, I mean,
expose he's not in there Jesus to see cover for
them because they're maybe their defensive structure isn't as good
(14:06):
as we all thought. So and Connor hellbook is that
important to them. So yeah, we'll see. Time will tell.
But it's getting laid early for him and they need
to kind of they need to get him healthier. They
need to figure something out in net.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Yeah, at least three and a half more weeks till
Hellibuck's back. You're like, oh, just hold the four. He
comes back. But if you're drowning, good luck holding that four.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
By the way. Sport's burning. It feels like braveheart right
now and the scot is shot coming.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Hold hold by the way.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Jared Spurgeon is their special guest today of the Minnesota
while he's had a great season.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
I really want to talk to him about.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Yesper Volstad, who's now in the Calder conversation, he's the
wall of Saint Paul has.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Been absolutely incredible.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Wolstead.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
So yeah, you were calling Schwolfstead last night. Knew nickname
for him.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
One of the topic want to mentioned. But think of
the Keller family and I know obviously you know Clayton. Well,
this is a guy who's named the game's first star
after the stars topped the man with four to three.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
That was Friday night.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
This came after his dad, Brian died unexpectedly on Thursday.
The next night in his hometown of Saint Louis, the
Blues observed a moment the silence for Brian Keller, very
emotional life the Utah Cap, and he decided to play
despite experiences such a huge loss. An amazing show support
from the hockey community. We saw something similar last night
you and I were doing the game. Predator's rookie Azzie
Wisebot scored his first goal against the Flames. Immediate pointed
(15:20):
the sky to Patriot, to his brother Orca, who died
in a car accident in September. First off on Clayton
Keller's you know you know him well, you know his dad.
I mean, just an awful situation.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah, you know, I talked to my dad about it too,
just because the two fathers trips that were when I
was in Arizona, I was hurt for both of them,
so I didn't go on them. So but my dad
got to sit with with mister Keller and I got
to meet him as well. And just a lovely human
being and very nice, you know, just a loving father
(15:50):
loved his kids and supported them wholeheartedly and anything they did.
So you know, I loved his family. I love Kel's
He's you know, I see him a lot in Arizona
in the summer, and I always try to reach out.
And we're both big fans of the UFC, so we
talk a ton and I always try to keep tabs
with him. So it's sad. Man. I reached out to
(16:10):
him and and just gave him my love and support
and couldn't can't imagine what he's going through right now.
But you know, sometimes in those moments, being close to
the guys and and and being in season is somewhat
cathartic to kind of just be able to get that
frustration out, maybe get your mind off it. You knows,
(16:32):
some beautiful memoriams done by the Saint Louis Blues. You know,
Utah did some great stuff for him, really really supporting
the family. So you know, kudos goes to them. And
it's it's sad when you know this stuff happens, it's life.
But when it's this quick and this fast, you know,
even the Ozzie weisblat stuff with his brother Orca. It's
(16:53):
when it's quick. It's you don't have time to kind
of say goodbye, and it's kind of one of those
shock things there's it feels like there's no closures. So
you know, kudos to the the organizations, and you know,
him having a back to back probably was was, you know,
somewhat good to get his mind off it. I don't know,
you can't put the word good in any of this
(17:14):
because it's it's devastating, but for him to get his
mind off it. And then the second game being Saint
Louis where he's from, and his family was all there
and that was the rink that you know, he talked
after the game that you know, his dad brought him
to and he fell in love with hockey. So just
really touching and my heart goes out to him and
the family and in the wise Bad family as well.
It's just stuff's just it's gut wrenching. It's part of life,
(17:36):
but it's it still sucks.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Yeah, we're all lucky to still have our parents with us,
you know how special family is. So obviously our hearts
and prayers and all of our good thoughts sending out
to the Keller family and the Wiseblotz as well.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Still to come.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Here an NHL unscripted Minicutal Wild absolutely on fire the
month of November. We'll talk to one of their key players,
a terrific defenseman. Jared Spurgeon is coming up right after this,
(18:09):
our next guest. Taking the sixth round, one hundred and
fifty sixth overall but the New York Islanders in the
two thousand and eight NHL Draft. He has since collected
one hundred and eighteen goals and four hundred and twenty
points in nine hundred and sixty career NHL games, all
with the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota named him the second captain
in franchise history in twenty twenty one, and he is
the top scoring defenseman in Wild history. Jared Spurgeon, welcome
(18:31):
to NHL.
Speaker 6 (18:32):
In the scripted how you doing man, Thanks for having me,
Thank you, Thanks for.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
That's a that's a fucking intro right there.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
I'll take that recording to the grave, show it to
the kids.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Well, it's a well deserved introduction because the only people realize, Jared,
just how good you are. I think we know how
good the Wild are after this month he had in November.
But you're a veteran defenseman on a blue line right now.
The young guys like Brock Faber. You know, how's it
been mentric Z as well by him, Like, what's it
like for you mentoring these guys because you obviously have
a lot that you can pass on to them.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
Yeah. I was very fortunate going through my time early
in my career with great guys. My first year had
Brent Burns. I was only able to spend a short
time with him, but just to see the energy he
brought to the rink every single day, and that the
joy of having a practice day, game day, no different.
He just loves coming to the rank. And lots of
other great guys, but they're very mature for how young
(19:24):
they are, especially Brock. He's such a special player. He
can do everything out there. And Zeeve, I think you
can see that the talent that he has coming up
on the offensive side, but he also defends very hard,
and he's such a great skater that it's hard to
defend what he does out there. So we have a
very special group back there, and I think Jason knows
(19:46):
the decour is always tight on the back end and
we want nothing but the best for each other. So
it's a great time back there right.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
Now, man, Jared, that's one hundred percent true of the
decourts your own little world. But you know, talk about
just your start and did you ever expect your nine
hundred and sixty games? I mean, what a career you've
You know, you were an underdog early on and you've
exceeded all expectations. You're such a great leader from everybody
I've talked to with the organization. But you know, what
(20:12):
does it mean to you to kind of get to
this point and kind of take us to your path?
And were there ever moments where you thought like this
wasn't going to happen and cutting out nin er in
sixty games in the NHL?
Speaker 6 (20:23):
Yeah, I think I think started with the draft here.
You obviously have a lot of belief in yourself, and
I have a very good support system within my family
and not my now wife, we are together back then
as well. And you go through the draft and you're
just hoping to maybe get picked or even get a
camp invite to show what you have. And I ended
(20:45):
up getting drafted and did end up working out in
the Islanders, but turned out to be a blessing in
disguise to be able to get a chance here in
Minnesota and them to believe in me to even give
me a contract out of Traverse City. And I was
very fortunate to have a great HL team there in
Houston that we were playing very well when they needed
a call up and I was fortunate to get a
(21:05):
chance and we ended up going to the caul A
Cup Final that year. I ended up losing in Game six,
so that that was heartbreaking, But after that it was
this sort of a chip on your shoulder after being
told no and not even getting offered an HL deal
from the Islanders, and sort of just took that to
(21:25):
heart and the belief in myself with the support group,
like I said, that I had around me to sort
of keep pushing me forward. And very fortunate that at
the time Chuck Fletcher took a chance on me.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
What was you know, what was something you learned your
first year, you know with the team from a veteran
maybe that kind of stuck with you throughout your career.
You mentioned Brent Burns, but any other guys that really
helped kind of usher you in.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
I had a lot with Matt Cullen. He was he
was huge for Yeah, he was He was the first
guy to invite me over for a dinner. I think
more for babysitting than anything. But it was good to
have a guy like that who just obviously had grown
up watching and admired from Afar as a kid watching
(22:15):
watching the NHL. And he was great to me, just
a true professional with the way he treated everyone from
the training staff, coaching staff to the parking lot attendants.
Just watching him day in and day out really had
something that stuck with me from the day one of
seeing him be a professional athlete.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Well, it's important the fact that you've always, you know,
had that leadership kind of again to JD's point, that
you've really overcome adversity seared you and Tyler ed us
both cut from your bantam Triple A team because you're
both considered too small. Both you guys went on to
make it to the show. So how gratifying is it
to have a moment like that, overcome that the way
you have.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
Yeah, I guess we're fortunate, not anymore now, we're no,
we're good, but very fortunate to have someone to go
through that with. Tyler and I had played since we're
six or seven together, So to get cut from the
same team, to have someone to sort of lean on
(23:13):
and go through it together and both have that same
goal in mind to to really show them that they're
wrong at that time and then obviously and are going
on to be a first round picked to Buffalo. Is
something pretty special over from I think that was four
years later from being cut from the bantam team. So
it definitely helped having someone in your corner that was
(23:34):
going through the same thing.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Uh, let's cut to now, you know you're right now
eleven one and two in November, Yes, Per Swollstead or the.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Wall of Saint Pete as well, Paul St. Paul.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
Why do I say Saint Pete? What is all that Russian?
So the wall to the Wall of St. Paul. I
mean he's named NHL Rookie of the Month, four shoutouts
in his last UH in the last four weeks. But
talk a little bit about the message in the room
right now and kind of you guys turning things around
after that tough start.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Yeah, I think we always had the belief in there,
but as you know, at the start of the season
there's such high expectations and when it's not going exactly
the way you want there, there can be some panic.
Put out there that isn't exactly in the room, and
but as a group, you want to succeed right away,
and there's some frustration creeping in I thought at that time.
(24:26):
And it wasn't that we were playing bad, we just
weren't very consistent. We would have some spurts where we
were playing great for ten minutes and then we would
have five manuts for the game would get out a
hand for us and we couldn't fight back and nothing.
Just after that we just start to calm down and
play our game again. And obviously having the two goaltenders
back there that are making the saves that they do
(24:46):
for us is it helps a lot. Then, gives you
that confidence that you can make that play, that if
something does happen, that they're back there to save you.
So it's been a great time right now to be
in the room and obviously come to the rings. So
we're looking to keep you that going.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Yeah, you've kept pace right now with a really tough
central division. I'm I mean the Avs, the Stars, Blackhawks
have been surprising, the Mammoth and the Jets.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
What's it like knowing there's no letup in that division?
Speaker 2 (25:11):
That sucks?
Speaker 6 (25:13):
Yeah, you look at the standings and you're always like,
all right, we're catching someone, but then someone's right behind you.
So it's just the way the league is nowadays. All
the teams are so good. I think you can see
every single night anyone can beat any team. It doesn't
matter where you are in the standings. But that is
a big thing that you have to keep going. You
have to keep consistently winning games to keep yourself at
(25:35):
pace with those top teams.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Yeah, and you know you need it. You mentioned it early.
You need your dcor to step up. Not just the goaltenders.
I mean your goaltenders have been incredible and I always
remembered as a d man being in front of goalies
is so much fun. You so much more confidence and
to your point, fun to come to the rink. But
talking about your blue line, you mentioned favor a little
bit in Bullyam, but you got kind of a beauty
(25:57):
back there, a little bit of a cave man, not
quite Brent Burns. But Jake Middleton, you got any funny,
you got any good stories, Jake the Snake.
Speaker 6 (26:06):
He's a great guy. I said, we're starting on the
same page. Big music buffs love to go to concerts,
but he's a special guy. He keeps that room pretty late.
Whenever you need to laugh. He's the guy to look
forward in the dress room. But nothing, nothing too crazy
on Jake right now. He says his daughter that's a
year old, So I think it's sort of slowed him
(26:27):
down a little bit.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Guys go to Yeah, I was gonna say top three concerts.
Speaker 6 (26:32):
Uh so, well, actually we just went to Stevie Nicks
a couple of weeks ago, which was that she was awesome,
So that's a throwback obviously, But yeah, we haven't seen them,
but we went a little bit of Morgan wall in
this summer, Zach Bryan. We go to some smaller ones too.
(26:53):
I don't know if you've ever heard of, like the
Fruit Bats or anything like that. Yeah, smaller venue, but
a little bit more alternative type music, so we we
try to hit it all.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Stevie Nixt is still so you guys, you guys rock
a little Fleetwood Mac in the room.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
I'm assuming yes, Yeah, some of the young guys are
obviously a little oblivious to what's going on, but it's
it still goes on in there. I know you're shaking
your head that we've had those shakes of a bunch too.
I think we had a Whitney Houston song on once
and asked a couple of young guys if they knew
who's had it going on, and they can't tell us
(27:31):
who in the.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
Song, so hopefully it was I don't want to dance
with somebody, go ahead, you know, but it's it's true,
like like spurgs tell them you'll be in the room,
like and I kind of caught it near the end
of my career, so three years ago, like these guys
the music selection like they wouldn't Some of them didn't
even know who Fleetwood Mac are, Like, like who is
that I need chaboozie or a little baby or whatever.
Speaker 6 (27:55):
Stuff you can't understand. It's it's a lot different than
it was. And they touched the iPad a lot more
than they should. Uh if they before when we were young,
zero chance. I was touching that radio for a while.
So we got we got some good, good DJs in
there in the room, and so I'm not so good.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Who's the worst?
Speaker 6 (28:14):
I can't sell guys?
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Yeah, come on, No, who's the second worst?
Speaker 6 (28:20):
No, No, he's not the worst. But Moose can overplay
a song in about a day. Yeah, that's the that's
the only complain about him. He has great tastes of music,
but it's the same couple of songs for a week.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
You never liked that song killer, Yeah, I like that.
That's somebody under the Bus. That's like you're like, okay,
enough enough.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Yeah, good, good taste of music, but the song is
over within a couple of days. Uh.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Carill Capri Sauce Spurs is one of the great playmakers
in the game. Obviously got taken care of financially, but
really don't know a ton about him. He seems like
a quiet presence with the guys with something you can
tell me about Carill the thrill.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
Uh. I think he speaks a lot better than he
puts off to you guys. So yeah, he's He's a
lot of fun in the room. He's such a good guy,
like disrespectful obviously. The way he plays on the ice
is is just special. He can do everything. He doesn't
shy away from any hard area. He makes plays, he
(29:15):
can create anything any shift. But no, he's just a great,
great guy off off the ice as well. He brings
a lighthearted approach to it, but at the same time
he works like crazy when he's out there.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Well, and he's The chemistry with Zuke is crazy. And
I've heard great things about caprisof in the room, but Zuke,
I've heard from multiple guys like he's one of the best,
funniest teammates. I can only imagine like their banter because
they're so connected on the ice that there has to
be some sort of like good relationship and chirping going
back and forth between them.
Speaker 6 (29:46):
Yeah, he's I think Zuki is the only one that
can keep Carol fully happy. If he's having a tough day,
He's always chirping at him, making sure he knows he's
doing fine.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
So he's the carill whisper.
Speaker 6 (29:58):
Yeah, for sure. Like he's he's one of the quickest,
wittiest guys you'll ever meet, and he just brings that
lightness to the room when maybe things are a little down,
or even if it's just a quick wit with the
coaches meeting or something like that, he'll always brings up
to the table to get everyone laughing and just a
bit of a little bit later in the room.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Always love guys like that.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
You know. It's amazing playing in the state of Hockey
and Minnesota for those who haven't seen the spurge, How
can you describe that experience?
Speaker 6 (30:25):
Yeah, it's awesome. Obviously I have some kids that are
in it as well, so you get to see it firsthand.
And I think it just starts from a young age.
Just the communities that you play for, you play rate in,
the sort of the city that you live in, and
just the pride that they have for those teams. Whether
it's a seven year old tournament or up into the
(30:46):
high school, it's pretty special to see the rinks get filled,
just to see your home team play. And right now
the outdoor rinks are getting going, so it's it's pretty
fun fun to drive around and see those lights on
and kids out there playing. If it could be I
guess Celsius, it would be a mine twenty five and
they're still out there flying around, so it's awesome to see.
(31:07):
So we're fortunate we put one in the backyard and
I'm out there every once in a while with the
kids doing it. It's awesome. It brings back to a
lot of great memories.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
I was about to say, outdoor rinks makes you think
of our youth as Canadians certainly growing up and you know,
like you said, a little hot chocolate after your feet
are frozen. How intense there were a hockey dad spurs.
Speaker 3 (31:23):
That's all I want to know.
Speaker 6 (31:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's different. I try to put
that down and sort of hang hang low in the corners.
But no, they're great, and obviously they all they want
is the best for their children and whether it's their
daughter or their son playing. But I think you don't
(31:44):
see that when you're a kid going through it, but
when you're on the other side, it's it's pretty crazy
to see everything that goes into it.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
Is it hard to remove yourself because you know, I've
talked to some guys that used to play in the
NFL and and they're like, in, you know, they'll be
watching their kids play football and the coach is like
giving out orders, but then like kind of half looking
at the x NFL are being like, am I doing
it right? Am I doing it right? They're like no, No,
You're like do your thing. It's good. I'm just a dad.
(32:11):
But it is it hard to like kind of separate
that a little bit?
Speaker 6 (32:15):
Yeah? I think so, But at this start, I think
you just try and let them know that you're just
there to support and hopefully enjoy he's enjoying what he's doing.
So my oldest helped her a little at the start
and then sort of got away from it, and then
same with our youngest boy. He plays. I'll go on
the bench every once in a while, but I want
them to have that experience for themselves. It doesn't have
(32:38):
to do anything with me, and let the coach do
his job and I'll be there to support my son
or my daughter and whatever they do. So if they
if they love it, I'm there for man. If they don't,
they can they can choose something else as well.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Do your kids do your kids kind of realize that
Have they realized like in that community, you know who
you are and when they come to the games, is
it kind of setting or they getting to that age
now where they're like, oh, yeah, Dad's that's the talk
of the town here.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
Well not me, but the team is, so yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Listen, nothing to scoff at what you have. I know
you're not making seventeen sheets like Carill, but you are.
You know, you're you're mister Minnesota wild.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
No.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
I think they're the last couple of years they've definitely
understood a bit more and enjoyed it, which is awesome
for myself and my wife as well that they'll actually
remember me playing the game that I loved as well
and they're part of it will have some great memories
as well. So it's Minnesota is an awesome community too.
There's such nice people here. They're very respectful. So we're
(33:40):
just another family in the community.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
You're telling us Socer he like the host for Thanksgiving,
which again shows your leadership. You know, a guy who
doesn't on these but also off the ice. Why is
this something that's important to you?
Speaker 6 (33:52):
Well, I think you you go through your first couple
of years as well, and like I said, Matt Collen
had me over for Christmas dinner and stuff like that,
so you learn from that. But just the tightness of
the group and just not feeling alone. It can be
lonely being in a new city by yourself, even if
you do have a girlfriend or wife with you. But
it is this great to be together. Obviously, Thanksgiving such
(34:15):
a big holiday here in the stage, so we had
to think it's I think we had twenty four people
over in about ten kids this year, so it's awesome
to get together and just hang out and celebrate those
things together and be a big family.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Well, I reached out to Goose before I talk to
whose management.
Speaker 6 (34:34):
Now, yeah, he's on the other side.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
He's on the other side. Alex Kulogowski is now a
straight management for the minutes of a while. And you know,
I've met you, We've hung out and had a couple
of fun nights together. But I know you like to
set up team party or team get together and get
the guys together, like you said, Like for you, what's
one thing as like the host that you always need
(34:56):
to have every time, And it's like become your calling card?
Is there anything you focus on post is a big
thing I got Like when I played, I hosted a bit.
I always had to have like a nice loge at
the team parties for shots. It became a little bit
of a calling card.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
Yeah, there's always a certain couple of things that need
to be in the fridge. There's like go to's. I
think more a lot of ours is like the snacks
that go around. My wife makes them massive because of
a candy salad which is just insane amont of candy
and a massive bull that all the guys seem to love.
And it's always gone by the end of the night.
(35:32):
And there's some things called chippers here too, which they
sort of sound discussing, but literally a salt like a chip,
like a Ruffles chip, but it's dipped in milk, chocolate
and hard and it's actually unbelievable. And those are gone
every single time. And then obviously just the beer pong
table is usually the number one hit around around the party.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Okay, okay, little beer pong, Okay, nice custom made or what?
Just do you bring in the old?
Speaker 6 (35:59):
No? Just you got gold school just can't be too
high maintience.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
I mean, I put Nick Schmaltz asked, asked Minnie Heni Stroza.
Nick Schmaltz has a North Dakota just straight custom made
beer punk table that he brings all the guys on.
Speaker 6 (36:13):
So I think we got ours from Costco Classic Old Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
And then lastly, I know you're a big Halloween guy.
So and Goose also said you always also have, always
have to have some kind of prosthetic, uh something like that.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
That's what he must is a prosthetic.
Speaker 6 (36:35):
We're big fans of Halloween and we're trying to get
some funny, funny costumes. So this year that was a
lower Rex and my wife was O'Hair hair, so she
had the nice wig going on. But I think, yeah,
one year as Britney spears, so had I had to
fill the chest a little bit there. But yeah, so
(36:57):
we have a we have a little bit of we
take pride in a gold number one year so.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
That you I did a powers too, I did.
Speaker 6 (37:05):
Yeah. So the blades on short shorts, so all that
going on, so it's flying around. Those things are hard
to rip on. Tho the four wheelers, Oh well.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
I can only imagine you're trying to do that. I
my wife just threw me in heels and made me
be a fembot.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
So no, we like Halleen. Helen's a fun one. But
it's starting to get like we said earlier about music.
You're like, you bring out a costume, You're like, well,
half the guys won't even know who that is. So
you have to be a little bit more current with
what you got put it on.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
You gotta go with Bieber. I think Tal's got something
for you. He's been chomping at the bit. He's a
super fan.
Speaker 4 (37:41):
So just a couple of just a couple of quick
ques for me, Jack, I can never pass up the
opportunity to ask anyone about Brent Burns. To me, he's
the world's most interesting man.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
JD obviously played with him.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
You came into the league and he was there, so
any any Burns, the stories, how big was the reptile
collection when when you got there.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
I mean, anything about Brent Burns would be great.
Speaker 6 (38:03):
So I was only my first year, so I was
pretty quiet obviously, just hanging in the weeds trying to
not be noticed, so I didn't get sent down. But
he's I just always remember him coming in and wrestling
our medical trader every single day, just instantly raped the
medical room and the wrestling was on. So I didn't
(38:25):
never got over to the house to see the big
zoo that I heard about and all that, but he
was getting tattoos at that time of all the different
things he had going on there. So he was also
such a great guy to me my first year. He
would take me aside after practice and work on little
things and helped out a lot. So I'm very appreciative
of what he did for me.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
And just last one for me.
Speaker 4 (38:46):
We mentioned Zuke before I covered him when he was
with the Rangers, and he always had that nasty side
to his game. I know you know what I'm talking about.
So I got to ask, what was the response like
on the bench when he goes after Logan Stanley the
other he's giving up fifty pounds to that guy and he's, yeah,
showing no fear. So talks the response you know from
(39:07):
the guys when they see him.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Doing that, We love it and we're just happy that
that punched in connector else the head would have been
spun backwards. But he doesn't. He doesn't back down from anyone,
and it's yeah, he he brings that grit to he's
such a good player, versatile player that he brings so
much to her tea. But yeah, when when there's a scrumm,
he always seems to find his way in there.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Certainly a guy never uh never misses the action.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Jared Spurson having a fantastic season for Minnesota while listening
the month of November was special, keep it rolling in
December for the state of hockey again.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Rats on what's been a really wonderful career. Thanks so much, Spurts.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
Awesome, Thanks guys, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (39:47):
H So the Fouad sixty we're officially into award season.
New York film chrit Is giving love to one battle
after another. Pt Anderson's film for Best Picture of the
Year the best one I've seen All You're the Great
Iranian film. It was just an accident. Jafar Panahi wins
Best Director. I think he'll get nominated for an Academy
Award as well. He's been a great director for a
(40:08):
long time. But the movie I'm talking about is called
Jay Kelly. It comes out on Friday on Netflix. Was
able to watch the screener the other night. And George
Clooney not much of a stretch playing a famous actor
who is reflecting on his life while getting a Lifetime
Achievement award in Italy. Huh, where's the acting in this?
And yet it's one of my favorite movies of the year.
Noah Bomback is the director. He of course did Marriage Story.
(40:30):
He's an excellent director. Really has a great year, I
think for Dialogue and Clooney the role fits him like
a glove. But of course it's not exactly George Clooney.
It's elements of his life. The actor grew up in Kentucky,
as does the character in the movie. But Clooney in
real life is very close to friend's family. This character,
the one he's playing, is disassociated from his family, trying
to reconnect with his daughter's talking to an ex wife, etc.
Clooney is very good in the movie, but the revelation
(40:52):
is Adam Sandler, who looks prime to finally get an
Academy Award nomination.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
There was buzz around him for Uncut Gems.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
He got snubbed, buzzer run in for Hustle, got a
Screen Actress Guild nomination, did not get nominated for an Oscar.
But I gotta tell you, I walked in a Jay
Kelly said to myself. Adam Sandler deserves the Best Supporting
Actor nomination. He plays Cloney's longtime suffering manager, and as
you know JD. In the world of acting, you know
about the actors, but the people around them often have
to take much of the abuse. The agent, the publicist,
the lawyer, et cetera. And sailor does an amazing job
(41:19):
juggling all the commotions in Cloney's life and realizing all
the sacrifices he has to make as well. It's funny,
It's charming. J Kelly is available this weekend on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Encourage you to check it out. JD.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
You've seen Pogonia, Your thoughts in your coast Lanthemos's new
film with a shaved head from Emmastone.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Yeah, that you guys, the goddamn movies that you recommend
to me. I for like, I cannot, for the life
of me, every time I leave him, I'm like, what
the fuck did I just watch Pogonia? What was the
other one with Demi Moore? That I just saw the
Margaret Quayley substance. I'm just like, I can't. I haven't
(41:59):
slept in six days.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
I mean, I love the acting in it, and I
love the I love the premise of it. It kind
of really gets off the rails quite quickly of like
conspiracy theorists that are right and there is you know,
life out there touches on the alien side of things,
but you know, the world of like it's another you know,
me and my wife looked at each other because we
(42:23):
looked at like one battle after the other and all
these other movies, and it's like it's a lot of
like anarchist movies that are coming out right now, like
The Little Man against the Establishment, and what is the establishment?
These you know, shadow governments and shadow companies that are
trying to do nefarious things to the little people. And
(42:46):
that's what it just seems like it constantly is. And
it's like, rise up, Rise up, And I'm like, are
we supposed to revolt right now? Or is that what
we're looking for? Is this the Boston Tea Party all.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
Over again seventeen seventy six, whether it's The Running Man,
whether it's one battle after another, a lot of dystopian
futures right now.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
And you're right, people want to get fired up. Good
use of nefarious Do you like Jesse?
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Thank you?
Speaker 3 (43:06):
But do you like Jesse Plummer's better? He was fat
or now and he's skinny and frail?
Speaker 2 (43:11):
I mean Jesse Plemons in Game Night is one of
the funnier performances by an actor which I think is
an underrated.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
Underrated movie.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
Jason Baben, Yeah, yeah, he is so good in that.
When he emails the Tostito company because they because he
goes there's a special three for one. He goes, it's
a little odd. That doesn't seem like it's not profitable
for the Tostitos brand. He goes out and emails them
and gets to the bottom of it. Uh, sorry, that
was just a funny, weird thing. That was my That
(43:40):
was my add coming out there. Guys, stop listening to me.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
We haven't a talent.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
There tal Your thoughts on Jake Kelly, uh, Bagonia, whatever
you like?
Speaker 4 (43:49):
Any movies you mentioned, Jesse Plemmons, you mentioned. I love
Jesse Plemmon. I've been on his I've been enjoying him
since the Friday Night Lights TV show.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Wow, if you remember that he's really you mentioned.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
The uh the weight fluctuation.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
I mean, I don't care. I mean, he's a great actor.
It doesn't matter what he looks like, but I do.
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
If you recall, there was a film on Netflix called
El Camino, which was basically like a sequel to the
Breaking Bad series Amazing Aaron Paul, And it's supposed to
take place the day after the last episode of Breaking
Bad and Jesse Paul not Jesse what is that? Just
like Jesse Pinkman, what's the Aaron pud Aaron Paul, Aaron
(44:29):
Paul and Jesse Plemons are playing the same characters the
day after the series ends, except by that point both
actors had gained like thirty pounds, so they looked completely hilarious.
It was cool, cool film. I enjoyed it, and I
love Breaking Bad. But that's just something I was thinking
about when you mentioned Jesse Plemons. But you know what,
not a huge bombback fan personally, but pretty psyched to
(44:50):
see j Kelly. I like Clooney, so I'm gonna definitely
be checking that out.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Is your issue with it?
Speaker 1 (44:54):
You think his movie's a little too hyper intellectual, little
too talkie.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
What's your issue? You don't like Squid in the Whale?
Great movie.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
I feel like he's a little too proud of himself.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
I get the feeling a little too like they're gonna
love this line, check out this line, you know. I mean,
I've liked some of his stuff, but you know, I'm
not lining up to see Noah Bambach. I enjoyed the
Squid in the Whale, but yeah, this will be fun,
and you know, we get to see Adam Sandler try
to do dramatic acting for the however many time.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
Exactly this is his Jim Carrey moment, just trying to
get that Oscar nomination. Will it finally break through from
Audiam Steiler front of But if you like Cloney, you're
gonna love the movie.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
There's no question about it, all right. More hockey talk.
Speaker 1 (45:38):
Kyle Paul Mary's at six to eight weeks at Torney
cl The Innocent saw plenty of replays across social media,
but not for the hit itself, as Paul Mary didn't
just return to the bench after the hit. He got
plenty of respect and appreciation for stealing the puck from
an unsuspected Emil Andre as he was on the way
to the bench. Then he died the puck to Jonathan Druan,
who then sets up to Amil Hineman for a goal.
Speaker 2 (45:58):
Unbelievable JD greatest the sist of all time.
Speaker 6 (46:02):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
Kyle Paul Mary then six to eight months on the
shelf right to the surgery table. Assists a lot of guys.
When you get injured like that, you sometimes get like
a minus or you get a goal scored against you.
And I'm not laughing because it's it sucks because you
know a guy that' said a great career. You know,
those are tough, tough injuries. Those take like a full
(46:24):
year after your you're healthy to kind of feel good again.
So but what a guts the effort by him and
gets a couple of stick candles in and a nice
little backhand sauce and Bob's your uncle.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
A pretty good story there. Meantime, Carter Hart returns for
the Vegas Golden Knights. They really need help right now.
The guards that are goaltending with Aiden Hill being out
there were six six and six without him, and so
Heart comes back, well documented what he has gone through,
had not been an NHL on that six hundred and
eighty two days. Vegas Golden Knight's time to a two year,
four million dollar contract. As we were watching a bit
(46:56):
of that game last night, it was interesting, We're like,
you made that joke, JDA. But the fact maybe the
bench is like the coaches must tell him, hey, let
like one shot go through early, like let there be
a breakaway chance, kind of get Carter Hart in the game.
It's been so long between the pipes you could just
imagine that rust that was there for him. Good news
is they got that early goal right out of the gate,
which helps him a little bit to relax. But Carter
(47:16):
Hart back in the NHL. Your thoughts, yeah, listen, he he.
I thought he performed well for this team.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
I mean there's a he makes some saves that allows
them to get that win and shootout out Dual Chicago
and Spencer Knight, who's been just having a fantastic year.
They need a goalie right now, and he could be that.
You know, before all the the shit that went down
and all the hubbub and all the and everything that
he's kind of been through and been dealing with. Is
(47:50):
right or wrong? Is Listen? He was supposed to be
and touted as the next goalie in Philly and he
was really kind of coming into his own. So if
he can find a semblance of that, you know, they
might have found something in Vegas that definitely can kind
of help whenever Aiden Hill comes back and you have
a good one to two punch and now you have
(48:11):
a Kira Schmidt as well, and maybe that even gives
you a little bit of leeway to trade one of
them and bring another piece in. And because I do
think they're still missing something on the dep side for
this team, just an impactful bottom six forward. But yeah,
he showed showed out well. A couple of mishaps, you know,
that Tyler Bertuzzi goal where he's coming out of the
nets swimming, but he made some big saves and you
(48:33):
know it's you. Other than the Bertuzzi goal, the the
Conniverer Dard goal was just fucking elite, like it was
such a nice goal. And then even the Oliver Moore
goal was a very very nice shot, uh left, he
coming down the right side, so so I think he
both of them high blockers. So every goal those two
high blockers. So maybe there's a little pre scout for
(48:54):
the for all the kids that and NHL players that
watched this show and listened to unscripted with Verkin n
Murs high blocker and Kata hat.
Speaker 3 (49:04):
I missed the Katya Kata like I said.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
Supportive crowd there by the way in Vegas, so just happened,
and the players too.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
Players mobbed them after theatre.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
Hugged there with Jack Eichel. It's nice to see.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
Yeah, he's really good in overtime and he stopped through
the four shots in the shootouts, so he's back.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
He seemed really the humility and the gratitude that he
had after the game and his post game speech and
you know the first thing he said was just being
back with the guys and and you know, being supported.
So listen, it's it's been a tough road, and I'm
believing it at that, I'm touching that mots of.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
All exactly meantime, this is unbelievable. Hockey areena in Milan's
last quarteen. Everyone's already excited for the Olympics. Are gonna
be back in the Olympics in February first time. This
is twenty fourteen. But the planned main arena for ice
hockey might not be ready in time. Construction on the
venues behind schedule. Organizers say there presently is no backup
plan if it's not completed in time. Bear in mind
(50:04):
Impics Staium in Montreal was not completed in time for
the mo opening ceremony of the nineteen seventy six Summer Olympics.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
Interesting nugget. They're from tal Jady. You were in Italy.
You and Joe went there recently. Listen one thing about
the Italians. They're there with construction. It may not be
on time. I mean, what's the level of concern right
now with this?
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Yeah, it's gonna be. The walls are going to be
made out of like biscatti or something. I mean. The
quote of the Quote of the year by Andrea Francisi,
the chief operations officer for the Milan Courtina Winter Games.
There is no plan. B cannot cannot abort this idea.
(50:44):
We are fully invested in this. And on top of that,
they just the IHF approved the ice sheet one hundred
and ninety six point eighty five feet by eighty five
point three feet for all.
Speaker 3 (50:58):
You nerds, smaller than the NHL rink.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
But the NHL rate is two hundred feet by eighty
five feet, so it's point three wider, but it's one
hundred and nineties. It's four feet shorter, which might not
seem like much, but two feet on either side is
a big, big, big, you know. It's that's a big
piece of ice that gets taken away. That then I
(51:25):
think if you're I'm more look at it as I
think they'll get it done. I want to have positive
because I'm going to Milan to cover it for the
NHL network. I'll be boots on the ground. So you
better not, Andrea Franchisa, you better not take my pasta
away from me and my and my Apparol spritz is
and my Lemonceello spritzes and my negronies. You better not
fuck with that. But what I'll say is I think
(51:47):
this and disagree with me, guys, and I want to
hear your thoughts on this kind of right, but this
is oh maybe that yeah, it'd be a nice little no.
But does this change the way they go about bringing players?
Does this change the players that come to the construction.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (52:06):
It is a change of personnel, I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (52:08):
I think they're just going, let's got our best guys,
the guys who are rolling right now. What I do
think is interesting is, as you said, every day there's
like a different conversation with a guy who may or
not be there, like Tom Wilson.
Speaker 3 (52:16):
We were talking about to last night. Tom Wilson's got
to be there.
Speaker 1 (52:19):
He's been unbelievable, a great power for he's been for
the Capitals, and I don't think he would have said
Tom Wilson's a lock a few months ago.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
But now me and JD or Dane were like, we're
beating the drum right now for the shit shorter rink.
Speaker 2 (52:30):
I had Mark Stone, I had Mark Stone off it,
and now that it's four feet shorter, I might have
him on it. That old bastard getting his legs up
and down the ice. Nice tal your thoughts magoo.
Speaker 4 (52:42):
Well that's so, how does that effect, say, bringing in
celebrinian Bdard? I mean, there are two of the three
excuse me, top scoring players in the NHL right now
as we're recording this, So does I have going?
Speaker 2 (52:54):
I swear to god last they got to be there.
They got to going. The last night I was watching,
I said, you gotta bring Benard. Fuck, he looks good
right now. I think you got to break up. I
just I listen. I know they snubbed him, and there's
some stuff, and I mean he's he's showing the character
and the resolve to be there. Maclin celebrity. I thinks
(53:15):
one hundred percent. If you don't have him there, your
your fucking nuts. But imagine a kid line. Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
Well the one thing you said last night brings Shaeffer
as well. You go eighteen years of age. Yeah, he
could play four Olympics.
Speaker 2 (53:28):
Yeah, I'd maybe have him there as my eight. You know,
I think the d is in as set as because
you look at like Pareco hasn't had the best year.
You know, Morrissey's obviously there. I think you're three for sure.
Your four for sures is probably Theodore macar Taves Morrissey
and then you you know, I don't know if you
(53:49):
can bring another left. You need to find some righty's.
You might see Weiger slide in there, but up front,
I think they just have such a it's gonna be,
you know. And then you want to bring Hagel, You
want to bring Sarelli back, you know, because John Cooper's
the coach. So if he brings Sarelli and Hegel, I
think Bennett's off the team. I think he replaces Bennett
with Wilson. But then if you bring Wilson and you
(54:11):
got the rest of the guys, well, then where does
Macklin and Bdard do you take? Do you keep Jarvis
off of it? So there's just so many there's so
many players right now that are having really good years
for this team. I just think you can't deny Maclin
and Connor Bedard right now. I just think they're too good.
Speaker 3 (54:30):
Yeah, the kids are all right. A couple more topics
and we'll say goodbye.
Speaker 1 (54:33):
Bittersweet moment for the man who was traded for Jason
de Burson twenty fourteen. Devil's defense from Brendan Dylon suiting
up in his one thousandth NHL game. This is Monday
night for getting hurt in a scrap with Dimitri verronkof
the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Speaker 3 (54:46):
Dylan never drafted, but carved it a nice place in
the league.
Speaker 2 (54:49):
Your thoughts, Yeah, undrafted. I mean that moment between him
and the UH one of the reporters that brought picture
of him and him saying just wanted to play one.
And that's that's the goal for most of us. We
just want to play one, and everything else is a
cherry on top, UH of the Sunday of life that
you've created for yourself. So Brendan Dylon, h he's a
(55:10):
great guy everything. Having met him, hung out with him
a little bit, I know a lot of people that
know him. I lived in his place when I got
traded between Dallas and San Jose. I think Dallas won
that trade. That's just me being biased. So it is
what it is. But I think we want it, you know.
And but he's he ended up withstanding the test of
(55:32):
time and outlasting me. But he's just a consummate pro
day in and day out. He puts on the work
boots and great family man. So all the credit to him.
I mean, it sucks that he gets hurt in the
game and gets Veronkov kind of took the took the
gears to him, and I was we were talking to
Daniel last night and they were saying they think it's
(55:53):
like his ankle, and I was kind of a weird place.
You never want to get hurt, and especially in your
thousandth game when you got all your family there. And
but hopefully he's okay and he stays healthy. I know
he had an injury last year, but hopefully stays healthy
and just a great career. Undrafted man, those are the ones,
you know, those are the special moments when you see
those undrafted guys. I was a seventh round pick.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
You always give love this fellow seventh rounders, but it
got always drafted coalition.
Speaker 2 (56:19):
It was undrafted for two and a half years. So
I almost got it. But you know that's me making
this about me and not about Brendan Dillon. So let's
get back to Brendan Dillon. Good job, Brendan, You're amazing.
We love you. Get healthy.
Speaker 1 (56:29):
Last thought, I want to make this about you and
your dad. You want to clarify some of the details
your dad's trip slash Kerrie Underwood story, which a lot
of people were buzzing about on ig.
Speaker 2 (56:38):
Yeah, it's thank god the magic of editing it is,
you know, it is a viral clip right now. And meanwhile,
I butchered the whole fucking thing, which is just hilarious. No,
I didn't butcher it was. I mixed up the teams
and the location and the celebrity, but in essence, the
whole thing was the same. It was actually Lance Bass
(56:59):
and it was it was in Montreal. No, it was,
it was in Dallas. And the reason it was my
dad was walking with Jason Spetts's dad and my dad said,
I was ninety nine percent the story was right, and
he said it brought up so many weird feelings about
Carrie under what. He called me the next day and
he's like we were laughing, but he goes, I'm still
(57:20):
like upset about it. Years later he's like, I'm still
He's like, I'm still rattled, and he goes, here, I am,
you know, because my dad is you know, he's just
such a nice guy, and I think he doesn't expect
people to be reticent to him and be like, oh,
who's this fucking guy. But he's a big guy. He's
like he Jack works out every day, but he's like
a sweetheart. So it's like funny that, you know, some
(57:41):
people be like, who's this guy coming in here? But
the funny part that I forgot that he said he's
he goes, No, you forgot to mention. After the game
on the plane, he goes cause we were flying to
the next city and he goes. The guys were like
shit talking, chirping my dad on the plane and apparently
it's you know, and I remember bits and pieces of
it because Jason Spetz was on the plane being like,
(58:03):
you should have texted me, and I was like, because
he played with Mike Fisher knows, you know, would have
been able to get him in. And my Dad's like,
I gotta text you, Like what fuck do I know about?
Like He's like, I was just trying to say hi
and like maybe get a picture, and they're just giving
it to him. So my dad got a real taste
of like the NHL, of like being in the locker
room getting chirped by all the guys, and I was
(58:23):
loving every second of it. Was loving it.
Speaker 3 (58:27):
It's a great story.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
No matter what. He is the man fan of the show.
Speaker 3 (58:31):
It changed my opinion carry quite frankly screw her man.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Yeah, I know, hey, like she sucks. There are some
people that did some people. There's a couple of comments
on the posts I put that was that you know
that was our self funded post that we edited ourselves. No,
you don't mention that it was self funded. Everybody knows
cost me money to get that edited self funded. But
(58:55):
some people were like, yeah, I've heard that about Carrie
Underwood that she's like, not she's car I'm gonna get
a defamation lawsuit against me. You can carry Andrew with
its people coming after me.
Speaker 3 (59:07):
It's a great story regardless.
Speaker 1 (59:09):
Thanks again to Jared's person, our special guest Dour NHL
