Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
It is episode fourteen of NHL Unscripted, a collab of
NHL and I Heard podcast As always, thanks so much
(00:24):
for checking us out and Big News Day. We're now
in the top twenty of hockey podcasts. We are surging,
my man, towards number one.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, we're on a parabolic trend. As they say, we're
not quite at the top though we haven't crested yet.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
At the top would be a Nora Academy Award winner
for five Oscars. Cine File and sixty will recap the
Oscars a triumpher performance for a Nora. In case you've
been listening, you know me and twere Reppin Shan Baker
who makes history with four Oscars. Plus we'll talk Colin O'Brian,
highlights and low lights of the awards ceremony itself. Big
time guest today, Jay, one of your guys biz Nasty,
Paul Bissonette.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Did he bring the heat or what? This was a
great episode?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, he was. He was just very He's just such
a good interview. He's polished. It's crazy how he what
he came from to now and and how he was
such a wild animal and then now he's like tamed
it and he knows when to use it and when
to have insightful answers and hockey and and all things
related to hockey. We even get into a little bit
of wwe folks.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Oh yeah, it's good stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
And JD and I got to hang out this week
on the road because it was Sharks Maple Leafs was
the Amazon Prime game and you're doing your Sharks radio
gig as well, so you had a nice little tour
here with these. Coach got to get called back home
to Montreal. I saw in Toronto, then he took the
bus to Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Go ahead, it's a life of the NHL. Baby. We
got two points in Toronto and then we were outy
on the old bone rattler all the way to Buffalo
because it's quicker to take the bus over the border
from Toronto than it is to go through that horrible
airport at Pearson and the customs, and it's just the worst.
It's the worst airport in not only Canada but the US.
(01:56):
As Toronto Airport's.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Off Pierson or National. You despise it.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
It's awful. Customs. Everything's bad about it. But what was
crazy as I was telling you guys it, I was
telling some people on the bus we got to the border,
and reminded me of you know, and I hate talking
about the pandemic and anything like that, but because there
was a weird time for everybody. But you're a COVID
in that's yeah, yeah, huge. But during the pandemic, I
(02:20):
walked over the border. So I walked over the border
and have Burlington, Vermont. When I was going to visit
my family in Quebec, I flew. I flew to Vermont,
took an uber to the border, and the uber driver
pulled off on the side of the road like a
mile away from the border, like into the woods, like
off the highway, and he's like, hey, I can't get
close because if I got close, they're going to test
(02:40):
me and I might not be able. They might like
take my car. And I was like, oh shit. So
I have like four bags with me, like rolling bags.
So I start hoofing it walking and I'm like where
do I go? And he's like, just follow this path
and I'm like, I'm in the middle of the woods,
like I don't know, I'm going So I see this
like government the government buildings. I start walking towards it,
and you know, I get I get within like one
hundred feet of it, and all of a sudden, this
(03:02):
cop comes flying out. Border Customs agent. What the hell
you doing. It's like, hey, I'm just trying to get
over the border, trying to see my family. He's like,
you gotta go on the other side of the road.
I'm like, that's a highway, sir. I cannot go on
a highway. I'm a human being. I'm not hitchhiking. I'm
just dragging over there. You think there's some vagrant with
rolling bags. So he goes, no, you gotta get over.
(03:23):
It's like legally can't be here. So I'm like, okay, whatever, yeah, okay,
appreciate it. So I start walking and I go screw this.
I'm walking around the building. So keep walking around the building.
Another door swings open. Another Border's agent goes, get over
the get over on the other side. I'm like, there's
a median there. I gotta hop i gotta get over there.
Semis flying by. I was like, what are we doing here?
And he's like he's like, we won't let you in
(03:43):
if you can't if you don't go over. So I
hop the fence. I got my bags. I'm walking like
half a mile now down the highway with semis and
there's only drink COVID. There's only one line for customs,
So I'm behind all these semi trucks, all these cars
and it's just me with my two rolling bags.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
The littlest hobo Jason de Merselet hobo. Yeah, Wilson being
on the road.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
I want a story about Maclin celebrating it because you
got to spend a little time with this eighteen year
old rookie who has just been sensational this year.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, I mean I got to do a Chipotle commercial
with him and with him in the NHL, and it
was actually great. I hadn't really had anyone on one
time with him. And it's always weird. You're with the
radio and TV and the guys that don't know you
or you know they're young. You know, he's eighteen nineteen
years old, so he never really watched me growing up
because I'm not a top end guy, so he probably
(04:32):
didn't see me a ton of his TV. So they're
always a little bit cautious about you, thinking you might
be trying to get one over on them. And you know,
kids are just they're timid. They're like deer in headlights.
So he was pretty quiet around me. But you know,
we kind of had probably about six hours together. We're
filming some stuff and we're just shooting the shit. We're
shooting the shit. And is such a great kid, so insightful.
(04:53):
You know, I love just picking his brain on what
he thought about the season, his career, you know, him
telling me how much he hated Will Smith because of
the BC rivalry.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Thomas Hicky he was in the broadcast and reference. He goes, Oh,
Jason Niverses telling me he's a great story, Go.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Ahead, Oh yeah, he said, He's like, I hated Will Smith.
And they're like best friends now, Like they like room
together on the road, they're always together, they're at the
HIF and so they have dinner together and he goes,
I hated Will Smith? Sid why did you hate Will Smith?
He goes, because just that BC team. He's like everything
they did, they cheat all over the place. And he goes,
they it would just work out for him. He goes, here,
(05:27):
I am working my ass off and I'm not getting
the same results and he's like it was just so
freshing because I love him. He's the best, and it
was just such a cool little moment, you know, hearing
that story about the rivalries obviously between BU and BC,
but you know, he's just a he's a great kid.
He just wants to be the best and that's all
he thinks about. And for him to be with Joe
(05:50):
Thornton is like one of the best things and the
funniest things, because Joe Thornton is probably like on the ice,
they're very similar, but off the ice, it's like completely different.
Like Macklin's like ice like Macklin's like really calm, he's
you know, he's he's dialed and he's doing the same.
And you know, Joseph Joe Thorn's a Tasmanian devil like
he just it's like cart you know, it's one of
(06:10):
those things with him, he's just you can't you can't
keep him in a room for more than twenty seconds
if you're not, you know, really keeping him impressed with
what you're saying. And so it's just it's a cool
dynamic that I think has probably helped Macklin a lot
this season.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah, of course, people make the parallels of Crosby rooming
with Mario, and I think it is celebrating with Thornton. You know,
young players come in, could be franchise players with faces
of the franchise previously, so it is definitely very cool.
All right, let's get to the trade deadline here Florida Panthers.
They make their move getting Seth Jones. One thing about
GM Bill Zido Jay, He's unafraid to make bold moves.
Matthew could shock on long term injury reserves that you know,
(06:46):
frees a significant amount of money.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
They're looking to try to repeat that.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
There's nine players who stood up in last year's postseason
end up leading the organization. So you know they lack
draft capitals, so to speak, but they're looking to make
some moves.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
What do you think the Jones movement? Do you think
they're done?
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I think that trade for Seth Jones. You know a
lot of people haven't been high on him, especially him
being in Chicago, and you know he hasn't really performed great.
He was super down his last interview before they traded him,
of like you just had enough and wanted to get out.
And you see he wants to play meaningful hockey. And
I know Pat Maroon went on a podcast and was
kind of more or less saying like he didn't like
(07:22):
what he said, but you know, told the line and
understood that. You know, Seth was just frustrated with the situation.
So I think it's a perfect system. Silva la Fay,
the d coach, there is a magician with D men.
He is gonna round out Seth Jones's game, I think,
And it's really just a perfect spot for him. He
doesn't need to be the guy. He's got three four
(07:44):
other demon with him, veteran guys that have won that
are there on this team. You know, he's probably gonna
play with that a Dmitri Kulakov or Nico Mikola who
just a perfect fit for him. And I just think
he's gonna flourish there. Like I think it was a
good trade. We kind of all we had our little
NHL Network group thread and we were all like, it's
(08:04):
a great trade for both teams. Like Chicago gets the
starting goalie with the future guy that was a frustrated
be behind Sergebrabowski and Florida Panthers get a top four
demon what they needed. And I think it's gonna really,
I mean, look out for the Panthers.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Man.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
The Kittie Cats are are back, and I think by you,
Matthew's gonna be back come playoff time, and you have
that cap space, so go get a forward now. And
I think they're gonna just peek at the right time
and come playoff time and it's gonna be Uh. They're
gonna be a juggernaut again.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Next up the Vegas Golden Knights. They need a scoring
winger GrITT in the bottom six. I worked with Shane
Naughty of the Night Amazon Prime Course. He does a
lot of Vegas Golden Knights games, just telling me. Defensively,
they're great, They're very tough to score goals against. But
in terms of draft capital, no first round pick until
twenty twenty seven, they lack quality prospects and at least
with their gmcaley mccriminal said, is that they got ahead
of things a year ago, adding to a hand if
(08:54):
adding Thomas Hurtle, but ultimately that's sh Shaye Theodore Injuried
four Nations hurts. They want to make an impact move.
Brett Howden, Colo sar Dorfia.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
They've been pleasant.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Prize of the season what do you see the Golden
Knights doing ahead of Frouday.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Well, you know, I was listening to Elliot Friedman's thirty
two Thoughts and I love what he said about Kelly
mccrimman that he's always like he he prides himself on
keeping things really tight to the chest and you don't
know what he's dealing and nothing gets out, but he's
taking a swing like he's gonna if there's a guy available,
and there's somebody that's a solid player that he can
(09:28):
go and get. I mean, I'm sure he's kicked the
tires on Miko Ranton in and if he could pick
him up, I'm sure was a guy that they wanted
him if he was available. So and I'm still reserving
the right to think that maybe he does go there
at the deadline and some random, huge trade. But you know,
I listen draft picks when you're under you know, fifteen
(09:52):
to thirty, Listen, it's a crap shoot. You know, the
top three picks are really something that can be an
influence on your franchise. But when you're constantly a perennial
playoff team, you know you could trade those draft picks
away and bringing meaningful NHL players, So I think you're
I think Shane Nighty's completely correct there because their decoor
is solid. I could maybe see Nick haig As as
(10:15):
one guy that could be dangled as a trade as
trade bait because he is such a solid player. I'm
very high on him as a player, and I think
they can go get a good return up front for him.
But again, they have one of the best top sixers
in the league when Shaye Theodore is back healthy, and
then obviously, you know, while Bill Carlson is going to
be back soon from injury, and you know, I think
they have the cap space. There's a lot of teams
(10:36):
with LTR money that can kind of make some move
So it's gonna be interesting to see who takes a swing.
And I think Vegas is a team that's never shied
away from taking a swing. And you know they they
they shoot first, ask questions later.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Fortune favors the ball, well said, the New Jersey Devil's
been tended a tail spin for much of the years.
And okay, and you were bullish on them at the
start of the year, thought they have a great year,
one of the elite teams.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Perhaps they could win. Yeah, but struggling recently.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
I know it's not just like a backup goalie situation.
Maybe you want to upgrade on Jake Allen, but obviously
the concerns around j Jack Hughes, Nikohesher.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
What do you like here with the Devils? What are
they gonna do?
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Well? Jack Hughes is now done for the season and
back in September, so you have his money. I would
go get a centerman is I think they were already
kicking the tires and a centerment before Jack Hughes got hurt.
I would find a way to get a centerment that
fits in with the mold of their team. And what
I mean by that is somebody that's young that can
(11:30):
kind of grow with him. A Dylan Cousins I think
would be perfect on this team. Somebody that from Buffy, Yeah,
from Buffalo, Yeah. I think it would be a perfect fit.
And then come next year Jack's back healthy, and you
just see how far this team can go in the playoffs.
I think any kind of playoff experience will be good.
I think they're short up on the back end. They
have enough pieces there. They brought in a bunch of
(11:50):
veterans and then they have you know, Shamus Casey, Simon Nimitch,
Luke Hughes. Those guys are coming up. So I think
they're fine on the back end and in net they're solid.
It's just going to be finding a centerment. They need
to find a couple of impactful centermen. And yeah, I
think it's gonna be interesting with that Capsuanes that open
up and I assume Fitzgerald's gonna be super aggressive, but yeah,
(12:11):
they need a center.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Bad Kings are fascinating because every year they look really good. Nelson,
they got to face the Oilers in the playoffs. Maybe
it's gonna be the Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs
and then they can't, you know, advance after those early arounds.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
So Rob Blake is tired of seeing this.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
It's been a great defensive team again for coach Jim
Hiller could use the goalie to bounce back to Darcy
Kemper's David Briddick hasn't been great, but it looks like
maybe some scoring there for the Kings top six.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Yeah, I mean I think they need to score a
bag a bad. I look at Alex Tuck, I look
at Ricard Raquel. Those are two guys that stand out
to me that I would be they they really need that.
You know, I think the Kings, if they don't make
it out of the first round, it is going to
be very bad for business, especially all the moves they've made.
And now you're looking at you know, you also have
(12:56):
a young guy in Brent Clark who's not playing and
is getting to that point where he's probably frustrated being
like either trade me or play me. So that could
put potentially become a piece that you can move. But
they really need a scoring winger badly. They need somebody
to come in. I assume them to be very you know,
Rob Blake has hasn't shied away from making big moves,
(13:16):
and they've gotten some good depth scoring. You know, Quinn
Bydfield's taking a step forward. Warren Fogel has been a
dog for this team. But they need to go get
a legit score a right handed So the two guys
I look at as Alex Tuck and ricired Raquel.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Okay, a couple of good names there as well.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Meantime, the Dallas Stars, this is an interesting team because
again I think you might argue they're.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
One of the top teams in the Western Conference, but
also could use a mover two prior to Friday. What
do you like Dallas to do well?
Speaker 3 (13:43):
They're another team that has a lot of cap space
with the LTR, with injuries, mirror huskinning coming back, you
have a lot of things like and they're just so
ho hum. Jim Nail is such a son of a
bitch because he just does such a good job just
managing contracts and cap space and draft picks and getting
guys that just peek at the right time as guys
(14:03):
are retiring or trading away. And you know that's what
he did to me when he didn't re sign me,
was just it was just masterclass moved by him and
one after the other. And I think it's a team
that needs a d man. I think they need maybe
add another demon. I talked to somebody the other day.
Who was it that said they really would think like
an Alexiak going back. He's familiar with Dallas. Was Jody
(14:25):
Shelley maybe or was it I'm not even Jody Sheller Microup,
but they were two tall guys that were tough, so
one of the two so they he was a changeable Yeah,
But I think Alexiak is a good piece that could
potentially go back. He's comfortable in Dallas, he played there,
he would be a good fit, can play both sides.
Has had experience playing with Alex with heyskin in and
(14:48):
then you know, you look at Segan is probably going
to be back. You know, the pickups you made up
front with Mikael Grantlin have just paid off so well,
you know him and Duchhane or it's a first line
basically on most teams, not a second line, And I
just think it's, uh, there's a lot to like there,
and it's gonna be a murderer's row in the central
and Dallas needs to go get a little bit more
(15:09):
insurance on the back end and maybe some depth just
if they want a chance to kind of finally get
over that hump.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Top four defense potentially there for dallasespecially as you said
with Hayston coming back. Tampa Bay Lightning had been unbelievable recently.
If everybody who thought in the Atlantic it was either
gonna be the least of the Panthers in the Lightning
come rolling Stuve Grimson or Buddy the grim Reapers, it
to me, I think Hegel is the most important player
to his team. If anyone he goes. He's been incredible
for the Lightning. You know, Vassilaska can steal a series.
Now critical that one seed is in that division. What
(15:37):
do you see coming from the Bolts?
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Well, Brandon Hagel thirty goals, not one on the power play.
That's crazy stat so funny. Yeah, I mean Tampa, who
to thunk? You know, everybody laughed, they said, you know,
Ryan McDonough, the best years are behind him. Comes in.
He's just turned that decour around Moores, JJ Moser healthy.
Now I would like to see them go maybe pick
(16:00):
up a d man, but you know they go and
get Yanny Gordon, Oliver b Orik Strand and say, to
hell with the draft picks, screw it. We push them
to chips in and that is just what this team does.
And they're immediately for me, a contender. Again, it's a
scary team when you got you know, Nikita Kutrov and
bradon point and then you add these depth pieces and
(16:21):
you know, I was kind of high and bullish on
them going after Alex Tuck. I think it would have
been a perfect fit. But I like the picks they
I like the pickups they made. I think they'll be
happy if they're done in the trade deadlines over and
they don't get anybody else. I think they're gonna be
happy with what they have because right now they're one
of the hottest teams. And you know, when you have
Vassilevski and Nets, I mean, you're you don't really necessarily
(16:43):
need to go spend overly on your decoor. But I'd
like to see them go maybe go get a little
bit more scoring, and especially for the second line, so
and Alex Tuck, if they could make the numbers work,
would be good. I just don't know what would have
to go back the other way because it would probably
be a big hole. And they just dumped all of
their draft picks. I mean, I don't think they have
a first round pick till fifty. So by then I'll
(17:06):
be driving electric cars.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
We I'll be flying with the Jetsons. One more team
for the Winnipeg Jets. Oh, they got the Listen Jay.
They got a bunch of guys all gonna need a
raise in the next two years. Adam Lowry, Kyle Connor,
gave Blardi Kingston's own Nikolai Eelers. They got the best
goalie in the universe in Connor Hallibuck until it comes
to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
That's when Helly gets leaky.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
They got to replace Ben Dylan, you know, Chovel Day
I's gotta get some upgrades. I think, maybe not, I
think second line center. I know they just signed domestic
cooff the two or six billion dollar deal. But the
point is for Winnipeg, it's now or never. Chevy's gonna
make some moves here. Kevin shovel day Off.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Well, it scares me with Winnipeg and I've been it's
been the same thing. I've been singing the same tune,
broken record all season long, saying wake me up in April,
and I haven't seen them have one. You know, they
haven't had any adversity this season. Everything's kind of went
to plan.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
They're like the.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Canucks last year, where it's like, is something gonna happen,
This team's gonna win, Like this is a great team
and they're playing perfectly to their system. They're attending's great.
Their decore has been solid. Josh Morris, he's putting a
borderline Norris Trophy season up and these they've just played
so well. So it makes me nervous because it's almost
(18:16):
like that comfortability and chevel Daeff goes. Yeah, maybe I
don't need to do anything and I think we'll be fine.
But one thing's for sure. I don't think Nikolai Eelers
is staying. I think he's leaving next year. I think
he wants to go be the guy somewhere. He wants
to be a top end talent. I feel like he
thinks he's kind of wants to go play in front
of the bright lights, a little bit of a smaller
market in Winnipeg. So you're gonna lose him, So I
don't know if you trade him. You definitely need to
(18:38):
keep him if you want to win a Cup, but
you need to go get like you said, I think
a scoring winger as well, but you need to shore
up that decor. You need an upgrade from nothing against
Logan Stanley, but you need a Jamie Alexiak kind of
Guy's another one. I was thinking of that another place
that he could land, because I think he was He's
an upgrade from Logan Stanley. He could really fit into
that system well and seamlessly. And I think they just
(19:00):
need some bigger bodies in the back end. I'm I'm
not super bullish on their decore. You know, I love
Josh Morrissey. I think to defense, I think Neil Peank's
having a fantastic here. I just think it gets a
little thin and come playoff time, they just haven't really
shown me enough where I'd be like, you need to
go get some insurance and some safety nets. And I
(19:20):
mean even Erasmus still line it. I would go, I'd
kick the tires thirty.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Years of age, five point one million dollar cap, but
that's not unusable.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
No, and I'm sure Phillies will. But it's looking like
wrisk the lining and Lawton could be going to Toronto
is what I've been seeing. They're trying to really push
hard to package that. So Toronto maype Leaf's another team
that needs to go get After watching them and uh
in Toronto when they played San Jose, they need another
d man and they need a scoring whear. I just
(19:48):
don't think it's enough with what they have, even though
they've been fantastic all year. I think they need something.
So those are kind of my two teams that I
deem the same. Like it's teams that are very good,
but I haven't seen much adversity and that that always
scares me. I think you need to go through some
tough time if you want to win a Cup.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Some big names certainly still out there.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
We all know if the Canucks trading J Teler, maybe
alias Petterson gets moved eleven point six million dollar cap
in his masters.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Who's taken A Who's taken Peterson? If you watched a
game and the Jesus you're more guy, but like poor guy.
I was poor guy for half the year and then
now I'm like, did you figure it out?
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Man?
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Go crywhere and come back.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Just shoot biggest.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
If they doesn't shoot the puck, they look at his
numbers like Petterson just doesn't shoot, Like, just fuckit.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Here's comments eleven point six million. He goes, Yeah, I
just been like I haven't been trusting my shot. You're
making eleven point six you shouldn't have any confidence issues.
You'd be coming in swinging it and not just the stick.
I'm talking about everything else. You should just be BD
all over the place.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Thanks so much for the trade discussion. That was great.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Ja.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
We'll break down more as obviously the weeks ahead, because
the trades will happen going into five trade deadline, and
we'll see what happens from there. We'll keep the good
vibes rolling next to business. That's right, Paul bitson that
on his unlikely career path to now media Darling. That's
coming up after break here on Unscripted Well, our next

(21:40):
It's great to see him. Man love the middle name,
and definitely loud.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
You know, not a lot of not a lot of
intelligent information coming on my mouth, but definitely loud.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Well listen as a guy who's like a proud Canadian
living in America. The video you posted like for all
of us, I mean, on this call right now, we're
all Canadians living in America. When Candle won the four Nations.
The video posted was incredible. That was speaking for a
generation of Canadians.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
We needed that one. Boys, there's a lot going on
in the world right now.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
We needed a little morale boost for US Canadian So
very happy they could get it done. And we we uh,
we retain bragging rights in in the hockey world at
least until the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
Yeah, at least until damn the tariffs. We're still on
top of hockey.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
We got it.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Now they're taking Whitney off the shelves into oh yeah, yeah,
Ford's taking all the booze off the shelves and uh
and probably the rest of Canada as these tariffs, the
tariff war continues. But hey, let's talk about hockey and
have some fun and not worried about the bullshit the world.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Well, hey, talking about Toronto. We were both at the
game Amazon Monday Night Prime with Adnan and I was
doing some radio for the Sharks. What do you make
of this Toronto maple Leaves team. Obviously they've they've had
a tough schedule this go around and and but do
you think this is enough? Which with the roster they
have comprised right now to make a run in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
I think right now the concern is is Austin Matthews
hell slash maybe. I don't know what it is, whether
it's a slump or health. And you kind of see
McDavid going through it right now. Where these guys have
been like they're they're relied upon so heavily. They had
the crazier last year obviously the anticipation of foreign nations,
a little bit extra hockey. So just hoping he gets
(23:21):
his rest and he's fully healthy going in. I would
say that obviously Chris Tannev's health on the back end,
which apparently he's coming back soon, and I'd like to
see them pick up his brother at a little bit.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
I just is gonna ask you with the news coming
up that they're willing to retain like that's a perfect guess.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
That's just dangling the carrot.
Speaker 5 (23:41):
Hey telling everybody we'll eat half, and everybody's just licking
their chops. Because Turbo is great man. He provides that energy,
he's in your face, he doesn't get intimidated by anything,
and he really helps establish more of a for check
right and come playoff time, we know how that important
that is, especially with you you know your combating Florida,
You're looking at the best teams in the East and
(24:01):
what do they have and what you need to compete against,
and and going back to that point is is their
center ice? Right, they got bark Off, Bennett and Lundell.
So for me, as good as JT's played, yeah, maybe
he stays in that second line center role come playoff time.
But I'd like to see them add somebody there. And
the name that keeps popping up is Braden Sheen. You know,
(24:23):
Toronto does have guys that can get rid of, including
first rounders, to try to entice Saint Louis on a
trade there. And if not him, you know, maybe uh,
I don't. I don't know who else could fit in
that role, but I think some depth that center ice
would definitely help him. So if they could add if
they could add just those two guys tenev Matthew's health
(24:43):
and then and then maybe Braden Shen or anybody else,
I think that, you know, they have just as good
a chance as anyone, especially at the fact that Florida's
played a lot of hockey here in the last three years, right,
there's a lot of added hockey, a lot of guys
played four nations as well, So I like our chances
and the fact that New Jersey, you know, with probably
losing Jack Hughes. You know, I I viewed them as
(25:05):
another threat. I would I would have assumed or still
assumed they might go make a move as well. So
not really sure who else you guys view as a
threat in the East. Washington's obviously up there, but I
still think people are having a hard time trusting them
if they actually uh, you know, get the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
And make a run.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
I think for Toronto, and it sucks that they lost
against the Sharks because that extra point means everything right now,
winning that Atlantic Division is massive, Like, let Florida and
Tampa go beat the wheels off each other and then
hopefully you can draw Detroit, you know, maybe Columbus and
be able to make quick work of them and conserve
energy for a long playoff run. So that's pretty much
(25:45):
my view on Toronto base.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
I wanted to ask you with the trade deadline coming
up this Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes, they swing for the fences,
you trade, Marty nature should get ranted and apparently they
offered ranted one hundred million clams. Now I'm good now
you feel like you have to say face and trade him.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
What would you do if you're the Carolina Hurricanes.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
I don't I don't know what he turned down.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
I think that Elliott even reported they offered him what
they what mcainner got.
Speaker 4 (26:07):
Yeah, yeah, twelve point six.
Speaker 5 (26:10):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
That's a lot of money for a winger.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
And if he wants more than that, if you're willing
to buck up and pay it for him, I would
make sure you try to get that inked before the deadline,
because you know, I think they've done so much tremendous
things in Carolina. I think that they've worked really well
at getting it done by committee. So the criticism on
on them the last like three four years is they've
(26:33):
never had that true superstar to get them over the hump,
especially a big winger like that who can get to
the hard areas and and and who's.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Strong and win wins his wall battles.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
I just I think that's a lot of money to
give a winger, and I think that if you do
go past the deadline, you're gonna have to drastically overpay.
And that's no insult to ranton and in order to
save face because saying by to Natius who's on such
a great contract and and and you know still has
room to grow as well as well as not being
able to lock in Genseel. Those are those are catastrophic
(27:06):
moves that can set you back a few years. So
it sucks because Carolina is one of those small markets
you really want to root for. And I understand why
they they want to swing for the fences and bring
that guy in who they've been criticized about not having,
But I would have only done so if they would
have been able to sign and trade, like I don't
you know.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
It's and then also.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
You're going to have all these other with the cap
going up, you're gonna have all these other big markets
being able to frontload the nuts out of that contract too.
So the money, the money gets even bigger. Right, So
you saw what they did with Matthews and and you know,
I think he made thirty one million dollars in the
first thirteen months of that last contract he signed well
before this past one. But anyway, it's, uh, you know,
(27:48):
I'd love to see them land them. But wow, I mean,
this is interesting times in the NHL. Man, It's awesome.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
It's it's so I mean, the league is so hot
right now and cancel. But I mean, the one thing
Elliott talked about was like, if you have a player
on your contra at the deadline, you're the only one
that's allowed to sign them eight years, So you have
that eight year option. So I think that's kind of
the only enticing thing for me to like still maybe
(28:14):
trade him. As a team, I want them, but otherwise
I'm a team. I'm like, if they don't sign them,
I'll just wait, take a run of them, come come,
you know, July first. But I wanted to move to
the West for a second because you know, we talked
about Colorado, Martin hs. You know, they might do some
stuff at the deadline, But what do you see at
the Winnipeg Jets. It's kind of like, for me, it's
the Toronto Maple Leaves of the West, where show me
(28:36):
come April time? What can you guys do? Come playoff time?
But I feel like they're in a prime position. Maybe
pick up a rental because I don't know, you know,
Winnipeg smaller market's not the most enticing place. Who do
you see that could maybe fit into that roster seamlessly.
Speaker 5 (28:51):
See that's the thing, like I would love to see
them make a move. I also I also kind of
view them as Tampa. Remember the year Tampa, they had
that unbelievable season, then they end up losing the Columbus
in the first round. Well, Tampa could have either sucked
their thumb in the offseason or they could have looked
themselves in the mirror, and they did, and then they
end up winning the Stanley Cup that next year. Right,
(29:12):
I think they ended up going back to back as well.
So I kind of view that at Winnipeg last year
they got shell shocked. They got to go to the
off season, look themselves in the mirror, take accountability. Hella
bucks right back to looking like his regular season self.
So I think that especially if they lock up the
West and they get that first seed, I think they're
poised for a little bit of a run. I just
(29:33):
don't know who they go out and get to address
their needs. Like my understanding is Nikolai Eils is not
coming back. He wants to be the guy and he
wants to be paid like the guy. And I assume
with the lack of high end free agencies this free
agent players this summer that he probably will get his
bag and and be able to be that first line
(29:54):
winger and play in all those situations that he wants
to so, but in the same breath, like I wouldn't
move on for him. But if there's like a big
package where if I considering you're not going to be
able to bring them back, that you can move off
from him, maybe solidify your back end a little bit,
because I don't I think they have the best third
line in the league, or if not one of them,
(30:15):
their top six is incredible. They're great, no issues with
their fourth line. Maybe you go make a small move there,
But for me, it's more about their you know, solidifying
their back end. I think there's a lot of pressure
on Morrissey and if they could maybe get one more
piece back there, I would I would really have a
lot more trust in them. So they've kind of been
(30:36):
the team that don't think anybody has talked about as
far as making a big move, And when you're playing
as well as they have, why would you want to
change things up? But did you guys have any any
names that have popped up there for me?
Speaker 3 (30:47):
I for me, I look at just recently the last
few days because with what Seattle is going to do,
is Jamie alexiak Is. It's an upgrade to Logan Stanley.
I think guy that can move the puck, can play
offense up and down the lineup, big body. I think
that's kind of the archetype of what they're looking for
on that team. And that's kind of my That's where
I started leaning a little bit because to your point's
(31:08):
exactly right, Like you're not going to get a guy
unless you trade for him that's going to sign in
the free agency market. So you can't really you need
to get somebody that's on a contract already and that's
gonna be not that they don't have a choice to come,
but you know, are willing to come and play and
play under contract. And I feel like alexiak is kind
of one of those guys that can fill that role.
(31:29):
He's still kind of young as a defenseman and he
just does a lot. And you talk about shoring up
the back end, that's one of the pieces I see
out there because other than that, like on the D
side you have Rasmus Rista Linens another one. Those are
kind of the two out there. Like on the back
I just don't know in the back end.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
Right, So I I Alexiak. I was gonna say Dallas
if I was Dallas. It's another he's played there, and
I actually think that's the only move that Dallas would
have to make it assuming that Sagan is coming back.
They replaced him with Granlin in the short term, who's
been awesome and is filled in great on that second line.
Like that second line is like most teams first lines,
(32:07):
the way that Deshane's been playing with with Marchmen and
since he's came over so.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
And then Hayskaning.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
If you get Hayskinning and Sagan back healthy for playoffs,
I think that Alexiak would be the only move that
they would need to make. And the reason I threw
his name at out is because he's played there, he's
familiar there, and it just ensures like I think that
we had bones on a TNT panel and he just
like man playoff time, you just need big long d
who are gonna close the playoff, advance the puck quickly
(32:37):
and then go north like you don't need you don't
need any type of flash, and you just need these
big bodies who are gonna take up space, protect the
that front and that's all that's really all you need
so interested to see what where Alexiak ends up going.
And at this point, Seattle, you might as well trade
trade off.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Yeah, we'll see what happens with the deadline come up
on Friday. Let's get into a little bit of your
journey as well.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
Biz.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Listen, love watching a turn one.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
You guys a phenomenal chemistry with those guys and always
so funny and quick and intelligent as well. And I
mean the fact that you're with Wayne Gretzy and gretz
is taking a bit of a hit back home or Trump.
But listen as a player, as a citizen, obviously, it
has done a lot for Canada. What is it like
for you just hanging out with Wayne Gretzky every week?
Speaker 5 (33:18):
Well, I appreciate the comments. It's been a whirldwin obviously
getting to hang out with the goat. Yeah, I mean
he was the one. Tie and Trevor are his sons,
and I used to hang out with them when when
I was playing in Arizona because they were living at
his house. He was the head coach the year before
I got there and he didn't sell so they were
going to ASU. So became very close with them, and
(33:39):
when the job came up for him. They recommended, hey,
why don't you guys have biz try out and tried out,
and you know, obviously the rest is history.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
And just just.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Like JD, you would know, like once you're done playing,
you're just looking for any type of purpose and and
you know, fortunately enough, I started Twitter a long time ago,
and that kind of helped segue into the media world
even while I was playing. I mean geez, at the time,
I was probably doing more of that than actually playing.
So it was, you know, the perfect transition. And as
(34:08):
JD's doing now radio for the San Jose Sharks, I
did so for the Phoenix Coyotes and JD was actually
there when I when I moved over.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
We well, we did tell him, I mean, this is
this is what I wanted to chat about with you too,
is because you know, I commend you on what you've
done and what you've built. And I remember seeing it
being in Arizona because we used to see I see
you running around on our practice days and guys like,
what the hell's is doing right now?
Speaker 4 (34:34):
Now?
Speaker 3 (34:35):
You know, you're like, what kind of segment is this
guy trying to do? And I wanted to ask, like
we did Bachelor segments together we did you did the
pillow talk. You were unreal in the Bachelor segments with
the type I didn't want. But I mean for someone
who didn't watch it, you would have thought he knew
the whole whole show. We'll tell because we had a
we had we had like five guys on the team
(34:57):
that were actively watching The Bachelor, and he was coming
in and interviewing us, and like it was like if
we'd done it now, it would it had gone viral
for sure, But it was like so incredible, Like breaking
that down, But are those things that you wrote and
like came up with yourself and just you know, Arizona
kind of kind of provided you with the canvas to
paint that picture.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
No, I can't take full credit.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
Rich Nareon was awesome and had a lot of good
ideas when he was running everything with the Arizona Coyotes.
And he's not obviously he's not with him any longer,
but he was. You know, they they parted ways, and
I really think he got the short end of the stick.
So I wouldn't be surprised if another team scooped him
up just because of all the awesome ideas he has
all the relationships he's built over his you know, twenty
(35:40):
twenty five years and doing what he did in hockey.
But he thought of the Bachelor report.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
He thought of what was the other one? We would
do pillow talk with Tyson.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Nash talk about that.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
That was but the.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Problem so we would We ran out of stories quick
because of how PG how PG.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
We had to keep it. We I mean, we had.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
About thirty forty stories that we wanted to tell doing
pillow talk, but they're like, uh and I think that
the climate at that time was a little bit more sensitive,
especially as we kind of got towards COVID then it
really got sensitive where I mean now if you watch SNL,
it went completely the other way, right. You got Shane
Gillis in the mix, and you know, everybody's everybody's taking
(36:20):
them as jokes a lot more now.
Speaker 4 (36:22):
So uh, yeah, we were.
Speaker 5 (36:23):
We had a blast doing all that stuff early days
with the coyotes along with Tyson Nash, and that was
a big reason. It was able to to kind of
propel and that and get more comfortable in front of
the camera and get my reps in. So it was
it was a good time and I'll never forget it
and forever grateful to the Coyotes organization.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Well, it's a great point you make, Biz, because it's
a lot harder than people think when they ask you
to be candid, be outspoken, be authentic.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
These are all words that TV executives use.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
And yet if you truly are going to be as
you said, you're just travling that.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Lianel A the time.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
Yeah, a meeting every week fired. This is the question.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
We don't know what's the I want to see the
closest came eeting fired? But what was a comment that
you said that they're like, eh, biz, next time, maybe
refrained from that.
Speaker 5 (37:05):
Oh man, there was a lot I called in a
decent amount in my first year, first year and a
half with T and T, and uh yeah, I was
just like okay, like sorry, like you know, like I
don't really know what to say, Like I'm just kind
of an idiot, and I'll just kind of say what
I'm thinking. So that's kind of how I was on
the podcast and still am obviously because Barstool doesn't give
a shit. Uh So yeah, I just uh, I can't
(37:27):
remember anything in particular. I did obviously get some calls
with the babcock stuff where they were like, hey, like
what's going on here? And I'm like, listen, I go.
I've had players reach out. I'm talking on behalf of
the players. I understand if you have to let me go,
but this is what I'm hearing. And I'm sticking to
my guns. And they road they stuck by me, and
(37:47):
I'm forever grateful. And uh, that was probably the most
chaos that we went through in like a week, week
and a half. Columbus should be thanking me. They got
their guy. Now, they got Dean evitson there. They're they're
a wagon. Now they're scary to watch man. They're a
hell of a team. No more babcock, see you later. Yeah,
the side, what was that? I want to ask you before?
(38:10):
What was that audition? Like, do you remember your audition
for TNT.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
I went in and it was Liam and Ace and
we just they kind of just were throwing softballs and
you know, you just kind of do your thing and
you leave and you don't know. I thought it was
a joke when I got the email to go for
the audition, I thought it was we got a prankster.
Foley is one of Yan's and wits buddies from Boston,
so he's really good about pranking players.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Like when Yan's was playing in Florida, he.
Speaker 5 (38:38):
Was texting X Flat acting as the team chef, and
that he was going to come over and cook this
meal for like twelve of the guys, like six players
are excuse me, six of the guys and their spouses,
So everybody obviously was in on it other than X flat.
And he's calling and canceling this whole like you know,
(39:00):
steak lobster dinner as he's hosting it at his house
and X flat it's freaking out. So this prankster guy
is notorious for messing with the players, So when I
got the email, I was I was like, okay, this
is Folds for sure messing with me. And then obviously
it ended up being true, so uh uh so yeah,
I don't know how I got into the full story,
but basically he's a prankster and it was the real deal,
(39:23):
and I went for the tryout and it all worked out.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
You played a few years with the Ilia priest Gallop.
Speaking of characters, give me your best Brieze story.
Speaker 5 (39:32):
Breeze was just uh, I mean, I he was just quirky.
He was just so I think one time he like
he like had like a little cold and he just
like left the road trip and he like went home
because because he wanted to be with his dog while
he had the sniff. Also, I mean, he was unbelievable
for us, so nobody was gonna say anything and then
(39:53):
he just left. I remember this one time he had
this big ass blue sweater. It was huge, it was
like a triple xcel and it was a Kashmere and
I think that some of the guys ripping on a
little bit, and it was he's like five thousand bucks
he spent. He spent five thousand dollars on this blue
blanket Kashmir blanket that he was wearing. I remember that one.
(40:16):
But he was just it wasn't so much like one scenario.
It was just a shit that would come out of
his mouth, like from like pregame meals. He'd be talking.
Sometimes he would be sitting by himself because guys were
just like, hey, I want to think about the game,
and I have to worry about what Bridge is trying
to melt my skull with right now. So it was
just more about the quirkiness that everybody ended up seeing
when they had him behind the scenes with with Philadelphia
(40:39):
when he moved over, but nothing really in particular.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
You tweeted a couple of days ago some close to
my heart in the WWE realm, and you know, I
was I'm putting in my early ballot for you to
be either your sidekick, because I know I know Wit
will be. He's he's like the Paul Haymon hype, like
he's the guy to come out, you know, mister Fuji
(41:06):
and the has I played with him and he's not
taking any bumps or anything like that. He's probably Yeah,
he's in the background hit somebody with a chair. I'd
be the guy to go out on the store. I'd
be the I'd be the Dudley, the smallest of the
deadly bros.
Speaker 5 (41:19):
For you, okay to go go team, So maybe we'll
take on the Yeah we.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Could, yes, and I would, uh you know, I'd be
wrestlings close to my heart and and uh you said that,
and I was like, oh, man.
Speaker 5 (41:30):
I think it would be a perfect time to do
it because I think that I forget who the wrestler was.
But he brought out a hockey stick and then Pat
McAfee's like, oh, he's he's conning me, David. And then
he's like, oh he's he's biting him in the forehead,
like bits of that, and he made a comment. So
I ended up getting posted online and I said I
would love to jump in the ring. I think now
it would be the perfect time to turn heel and
(41:51):
wear like a a Canadian flag onesie and get on
the mic and all these small town America places and
just rip on start going after Trump.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Terrific.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
Yeah, Canadian, we, I mean we. He did curtain a
distraction at ASU.
Speaker 5 (42:06):
That's right, That's right. We did do that together. We
had the little the wrestling outfits on. I was asking
him if I could get like a jock, just to
get me a little bit more bulge, like help out
with the with the angles for crying out loud. I
basically soured myself by doing that.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
On a campus. So as U A SU does like
a free throw thing after the half where they every
free throw for the opposing team. They have a curtain
of distraction behind the net and people come in and
they bring in like celebrities from the area. It's coming
and you they open this curtain and you got to
get in these costumes in like five seconds and scream
(42:45):
so me and him, they asked us to do it,
So I'm half you know, I'm I'm sauced at this game,
like being like I'm so nervous, and then we're throwing
on We're like, he's curting me out or I've we're
curting him out on like a Hannibal lecter, like on
the gurney. He's screaming at these players, these kids. He's
asu guys, and they're the team they're playing. At the time.
I think it was the rivalry game between U of
(43:07):
A and we're just You're like, we're in we're in
the wrestling gimlets, the little onesies, and we're showing.
Speaker 4 (43:12):
Up like in front of everybody.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
We're basically court side and we're on this little podium,
and yeah, they close the curtain and then if there
is a free throw, they open up the curtain, and
then you try to distract them. I don't think we
had a good record of distracting them, but as I
said earlier, I think they were cranking the ac in there,
so not.
Speaker 4 (43:30):
Really helping old busy boy out here.
Speaker 1 (43:32):
All right, last one for you, Spittin Chicklets has become
such a juggernaut is it's been such a great podcast,
and again it proves that it doesn't matter of hockey
may not be a major sport in America, people of
people who are passionate and funny entertaining what's that journey
been like and seeing what a success it's been.
Speaker 5 (43:46):
It's been unbelievable, and I'm just so grateful that in
my post career that I've been able to kind of
start a essentially a business with friends and evolve it
to what it's came into. And you know, there's obviously
being been like pivotal moments that have helped make it bigger,
like when we were able to get Crosby and McKinnon
and do the golf match with them. Obviously, when we
got Wayne on for the first time, We've gotten Charles
(44:08):
Barkley on because of the connection at TNT. So yeah,
it's it's just been fun. And it just always goes
back to the fact that you know, like it's when
I when my career ended after my NHL career, I
didn't even have a job at in the American League
at the time, and I was like on my couch
with my thumb up my hoop, not even knowing what
was next, what I was going to do. So that
(44:29):
really forced me to to start thinking about what I
needed to do when when it was all said and done,
and just now just grateful to have something to be
able to do and have a purpose, so grateful for
the people I get to do it with. Ra who
he's not currently with us, he's just you know, away
for a little bit to do a little bit of
a reset, but you know him Grenelly Yans all the
(44:52):
fish behind the scenes, Pasha. So we've kind of grown
a team of about eight nine people now and just
growing that and and and being on a team again
and staying in the locker room. That's what I missed
the most is the camaraderie, the storytelling and and I
mean that's once again going back to my actual playing ability.
That's really all I did right the ox court and
(45:12):
having fun in the locker room. So it's just been
awesome and just forever grateful. And I'm sure you guys
feel the same, right Like it's just fun, Like hockey's fun,
The league's thriving, and it's a great industry to be in.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
Yeah, it's fun to just sit around and shit talk
with your buddies, and yeah, I mean, and it's it
makes it that much more sweet when you have success
doing that because you know, now you're you've been you've
been able. Now you guys are in a position you know,
you bring in yans, Now, who I want to ask?
How has he been doing? He's a great fit for
you guys. And then also like you talk to people
in the industry and you know the empty nets guy,
(45:46):
the empty net guys, and they all say, you guys
are if you reach out and talk to the spit
and chicklets guys, you're the first guys to help if
anybody needs any help, You're there in a in a second.
Because that's kind of how the hockey community is, which
is so great. We're all trying to build each other up.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
So that like that, I appreciate that, and it's true.
Like that's the thing about like the game thriving so
much is now it's giving all these other media members
like everybody, it's like, what's the what's the term high
tide lifts all boats?
Speaker 4 (46:14):
Actually, right, a little biz rendition there.
Speaker 5 (46:21):
I'm brain dead, but but that's what it is. Man,
and and the more that the league's thriving, everybody gets
to get involved in the mix and and continue to
do what we love doing. So I love those empty
netters guys. What's what chaos? Those guys do the incredible
job you guys, Like, there's just so many awesome people
in media, in the hockey world and just people in
(46:41):
general in the hockey world. Right, that's kind of I
feel like, like, not only has the play in the
league thrived, but I think it's also shed light on
how good the people are in the hockey community and
how much we care and how much effort we put forth.
So I know, bet basketball's taking a lot of shrapnel
right now, but hey man, it's it's what you and
the and the people involved put into it that make
(47:04):
what's happening. So it's it's great to see. And uh,
right back at you guys as well. Congratulations on all
your success. The fact that av that you got linked
up with JD. He's an absolute character and JD to
you man, like you were always a silly guy in
the locker room, like this was the media side was
meant for you as well. Obviously you had a lot
more of a credible playing career than I did and
(47:26):
and didn't really well there. But as you know, once
that ends, you need to find something else than you
have and and this is a perfect fit.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
Man.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
No, thank you, and I mean listen, you're also the
only time that our producer, tele Ponchevski has felt cool
is because of you. So that's another big pine. He
has a story for it as well. He's been waiting
to tell it.
Speaker 2 (47:47):
Tell you here we go, Here we go, get.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
In there town.
Speaker 6 (47:50):
I actually ran into you in Vegas at the draft
last summer BIZ and told you about this, so you
were you were in Ontario. We had met before because
I was covering the league for ESPN and I was
out with my wife and some friends at Chaconi one
night in West Hollywood and you guys had just went
a playoff series and we're partying it up over there,
and you actually did recognize me and tap me up
(48:12):
a little bit. And you know, my wife doesn't know
what the AHL is or the NHL or any of that.
She just saw, you know, some pro athletes, you know,
showing me a little respect in front of our friends.
And she was impressed, which which does not happen.
Speaker 4 (48:28):
So for me, Chaconi's what a spot, What a spot
that is.
Speaker 5 (48:33):
I remember that we'd actually just beat I want to
say we beat the Gulls, the San Diego Gulls and
the La Kings were nice enough. We asked for the card,
the team card. We end up going team party at
Chaconi's and then out to the club after. I think
the total tab was close to twenty grand. Rob Blake
(48:55):
wanted to kill me. He wanted to we we probably
put your guys meal on our tab. We throw it
over here, we got it, stack up those air miles.
But no, man, it's uh.
Speaker 4 (49:07):
I've met a lot of amazing people along the way.
Speaker 5 (49:09):
And uh and I'm glad I saw you at your
Cony's and and good to see you again and thanks.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
Also for lining all this up. Man. This is uh,
this is great.
Speaker 6 (49:17):
For what it's worth. For what it's worth. The waiters
thought you were the Kings. They did, they didn't know.
Speaker 5 (49:23):
Oh okay, even better, that's why they were bringing over
the expensive wine list.
Speaker 2 (49:28):
That's why.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
Yeah, these guys can afford it.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
Yeah, Paulsen, that catch them spending checks of course every
week on Turner.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
This was awesome, man, I can't think enough.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
Obviously, you go back with JD and clearly Tal this
is our first time chatting.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
I really appreciate you and always heard of great things.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
Love seeing on coast to coast and any Petrello, and
most importantly, say hi to my doppelganger, Chris Chellis.
Speaker 4 (49:46):
Kelly, you are Shelley.
Speaker 5 (49:48):
You're the same person with that under pan and those
and those pearly whites.
Speaker 4 (49:54):
And the big nose. You should you should just.
Speaker 5 (49:56):
Go to Chicago and belly up at bars and just
tell people your chest.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
He does in Chicago, Several people, Oh my god, mister
kelli'sn I get a picture of again.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
Yeah, yeah, it's hysterical.
Speaker 5 (50:08):
You gotta start riding the bike in the sauna too.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
All right, thanks once again to business.
Speaker 1 (50:19):
He was absolutely unbelievable and a guy who clearly can
see as an actor. Speaking of acting, it's time now
for Cinophile in sixty and as we break down, I'll
give you my top three winners and losers. JD of
the Academy Awards number one winners of course, Nora, we
don't need to belabor the point, but five Academy Awards
of six nominations, and Sean Baker, the first ever to
win four rosters. Again, we discussed this. You said it
(50:39):
was further proof that sex sells, etc. I think it's
a great film and as Talis said, marginalized communities getting
there their day in the sun. Let's get to Conan,
because I think Conan is one of the winners of
the night. I thought he was really funny. One of
my favorite jokes the night was when Flow won for
Best Animated Film. He said, this is the first ever
win for Latvia. Balls in your Court, Estonia, And then
later on first ever black Man won for costume design
(51:02):
and he goes, what a historic moment, balls in your court, Estonia.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
Great line.
Speaker 1 (51:05):
That's the kind of clever equiption you need. Good writers.
Very Letterman asked sensibility.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Love the video. Martin Scorsese CAMEO, tell them Marty sent
you was great.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
Love the fact he addressed the controversy and involving Carlos
via guest callin familiar Perez the only one dropping more
f bombs in the movie. A Norris or publicist joke
at Conclave and Catholics. I thought colnhim was fabulous. And
the third biggest winner was the Brutalist winning the three
Oscars and probably should have, although we'll get the best
actor in a second. Adrian Brody wins an insufferably terrible
speech Guinness World Record for the longest speech ever, and
(51:34):
it was awful. He came across his arrogant when he said,
I've been here before. He's dating Harvey Weinstein's X. But
I love the wins for the score, Daniel Bloomberg and
the cinematography fantastic, So two deserved wins. The losers are
complete unknown, all these baby boomers loving it. I know
Tal liked it, Oh for eight I love James Mangle,
but it's not that good. Shouldn't won an Oscar nomination?
Speaker 2 (51:53):
Was the win?
Speaker 1 (51:53):
Congratulations, Sorry for timidated shallow May. He'll win an Oscar
one day, and fortunate did not get his moment. I
was curious about changing my pick on the flys. They
really do love shallow May. Sandler's playing to him, the
Colin's jokes about him. But Brody does win. The substance
also a loser one for a Shire may give me
more devastating loss. She could not hide her disappointment. Clearly
this was her Oscar, this was her moment. She tried
(52:14):
to smile through, but Mikey Madison twenty five year old. Essentially,
this is the plot of the Substance. An older actress
gets phased up by Negra Hotter actress, and she also
planed to strip for previously in stripteas. This is the
movie and this is happening in real life. She's devastated
and the number one biggest loser and don't cut this
towel is the Israeli government all along, no other land
has been the best winner out there. It wins Best Documentary.
(52:35):
Israeli Palestinian Collective. This is not a society which has
always been very pro Palestine, and yet that movie wins.
It's an Israeli Palastine collective. Vanessa redgre Back in nineteen
seventy eight minute of pro Palestine statement to not go
over well. I was so happy it won Best Documentary.
Absolutely deserved to win. You should all go see Northern Land.
This is a documentary that was not getting any distribution.
(52:55):
All of a sudden, you win an Academy Award, you're
gonna get distribution. It's an incredible film. I hope people
see it, and most importantly, it helped me beat David Samson.
Speaker 2 (53:02):
And her head to head.
Speaker 1 (53:03):
If for anybody who watched on the Lepertard Show, we
went ahead to head on our picks. I went seventeen
oh twenty three, he went fourteen. He picked the Ukraine
War Porcelain Land, which is another nomination. I said, no, buddy,
we're gonna go pro Palestine is holy government. One of
the losers of the night talk to me about Ali
and Adrian Brody.
Speaker 3 (53:18):
Well the Ukraine one people soured on Zelenski, so we
you know it's what hey, But I digress. Well, no, folks,
you know, I to your point on the substance. I
wanted to say quickly that plot was freaking Oh no.
I sent you that clip of that woman talking with
me like this is the plot of the substance. We're
living in the matrix and I was like, Jesus, we are.
(53:41):
I'm freaked out. And then more proof of that Skynet
is here the terminator.
Speaker 4 (53:49):
You know.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
I looked at my wife, who's who's got her sad card,
and I said, why the hell did you guys even
do a strike? Because you're gonna go, you do a strike.
And then the the actor of the year that wins
an Oscar is a guy that had his voice modified
by AI. So the thing that you're trying to keep
out is the thing that you are now Like put
(54:12):
that in a context for me, like I don't even understand.
Like I heard that little nugget and I was like,
wait a minute. Timothy Shalame, who did the old school
way of it. He went out, learned how to sing,
he did all the nuanced thing, put on weight, gained weight,
did everything to learn how to be Bob Dylan. Get
into the skin of Bob Dylan. True, true, true, in
(54:33):
its truest acting, purest form. Does it beautifully? Did it great? Obviously?
I agree with you. The movie was good. I don't
think it was Academy Award correct winning good. But then
you go to this guy, Adrian Brody, who is insufferable
too with that speech and his wife he's dating Harvey
Wine seemed weird. And then he goes and all the
(54:53):
while his voice is Hungarian accent was shaped by AI.
Speaker 1 (54:59):
Riddle me that congrat your former team at Mark Edward
last new NHL record twenty and sixty six career block shots,
passing Mark Giordano. NHL only began tracking block shots as
a stat no fub but still congrats your old teammate.
Speaker 2 (55:13):
Give me a lastic story.
Speaker 3 (55:13):
In the way out, oh Pickles was he's has not changed,
still has the same suit that he was drafted in.
He still wears it, still hoarding his nickels and his dimes,
and but just such a great attestament to him and
the way he plays. And I mean, it's funny. On
the way out, you probably be mad I'm telling this story.
But on the way out, I was like, hey, honestly,
congrats man, Like, like what an achievement. He goes and
(55:36):
I said, he's kind of walking with a little bit
of a hitch in his gidea up and I was like,
what's going on? And he's like one of the shots
I blocked and he's not. He's like, not the one
I won on, but he's like one after he goes,
he caught me right in the the giggly bits and
he's like, he's like, I swear to god. He's like
for a second, I thought like I was in trouble,
like like something bad really happened. And I was like,
(55:56):
can you imagine I look at him, I said, can
you imagine the shot block where you win the NHL
history on you. You lose one of your boys. Oh
what a Greek tragedy that would be. But you know,
Mark Duard, what a what a legend, just an incredible
guy and great player, what a you know, everything he's
done for that franchise just awesome.
Speaker 1 (56:18):
Set a record, stop the puck lose a ball that
could have been the Marke Edward lastic story.
Speaker 3 (56:23):
He's quote, he had the quote of the Year this
year as well. They asked him said Mark, like, how's
your back doing, because he had some back issues, and
he goes, well, it goes you know, it's just it's
so sore from carrying this franchise.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Like this was a ton of fun. Thanks it's always
to businasty man. He was awesome. I really appreciate him
and his diligence here with us and the great storytelling.
And thanks for JD. Now back in a Z and
thanks as always to all of you.
