At one point John with Troma the show people doing

year Panthers and Blue Jackets, with Jody Shelley in attendance.
At one point we looked up Firewagon Hockey, like, oh

of young players and a couple older, players and then
we just didn't have a system like the coaching back.

all got traded or moved on from, there but we
had a great nucleus of players and it was a

lot of. Fun we had some playoffs. Success we Swept
chicago and the best of five we beat him three.
Straight they were. Second we're the worst team in the
league to make the playoffs And chicago and three in
the first round lost in. SEVEN i think To Saint.
Louis but, anyways we had a lot of. Fun we

didn't know any. Better but it's too bad we didn't
get to grow up In toronto together because we had
a lot of good.

Him boria was the. GUY i MEAN i Idolized bori

drafted as a center as a, kid and he was a.
Defenseman and for whatever, REASON i JUST i thought he
was so cool and he Was sometimes you don't want

was even greater THAN i, thought and just an, awesome awesome.
Guy and what an, athlete what a, player, man he was.
GREAT i THINK i was, eighteen he was probably in
his early. Thirties and the guy could just. Fly he
was so such a. Talent he assisted on my.

Brother it was. Awesome and early on in our, career
WHEN i was In toronto and he was In, boston
we kept Bugging toronto to try and trade for, him
and they they almost had a deal. Done and when
we Traded tom For Tom fergis For bill Der, lego
and they were gonna Put jeff in the, deal And

jerry mcnamaray didn't want my brother to come because he
thought it would affect my growth or whatever with the
leafs in case they had to send him to the
miners because his first couple of years he was in the,
miners and they were worried that if he didn't make
it upset.

Well almost got to play, together and then we did In,
vancouver And vancouver unfortunately didn't want to re didn't want
to pay him what he was going to get in free.
AGENCY i think they offered him half what he got
or less than, that and he ended up signing To.
St louis AND i stayed In. Vancouver but it was.
Fun it was fun playing with. Him you, know you're

this role we're, making we're making, money and he's, like
we can't miss this, meeting and so we had to.
LEAVE i don't know how they did after we, left

Fun we played junior hockey, together SO i had played
With jeff prior and then obviously growing up with, him

and he's three years older THAN i. Am but you know.
Nothing the funniest STORY i THINK i have Of jeff
is playing against. Him he's In, Washington i'm In montreal
And Dale hunter cross checked me OR I kempner did

THINK i cross checked him in the head or punched
him in the, face one of the. Two wrong guy
to do that. Too, yeah my brother's on the ice
and he's got me in a headlock and he's Holding
hunts back from killing. Me going. On he didn't mean,
it he didn't meet. It hunters trying to kill. Me

my brother's protecting. Me i'm on the other. Team and
the next day in the, newspaper Brother lee loved and
it looks like he's choking, me but he's really protected. Me,
ah that's. Great, yeah that's that was a fun. Story
thank god he was, there OTHERWISE i would have got.

Russ minnesota North stars moved south To dallas and became The.
Stars what do you remember about that last season In?
Minnesota how was the transition To big d once the
team got, There because we all know how much they
love Hockey minnesota another while they're, There but at the
time North stars leaving must have been.

Massive it was.

Crazy we Were we started off the first half season
where we're doing, great and then we went into a.
Slump In, january they make the announcement we're. Leaving AND
i knew WHEN i got traded, There Norm green told
me that we were moving To. Anaheim and then The
disney wanted a, team So betman Called Norm green and, Said,

okay you're not going To, anaheim pick any other. City
that's how we ended up up In. Dallas we were
originally going To. Anaheim so we go on this losing Streak.
January we we're out of the playoff, hunt and the
fans stopped showing. Up we're sitting on the, Bench shane

schurl is beside. Me we're now drawing four thousand people
to the. Games they're just they're revolting against. This this
guy's in a section across from our bench and he
yells At, Charles, Hey, charles where do you want me
to meet you after the, Game and you could hear
it like it was empty the, rink And charles just

(32:44):
put his head, down And Bob gainey's like just. Pissed we're.
Losing we're not going to make the, playoffs and his
his neighbor is yelling at him across the rink where
are we going for beers after the. Game it looks
like A Beer league. Team but it sucked that last
half season we were, off we start playing awful and

we weren't and everybody knew it and they didn't they
didn't come to the. Games it. Sucked so it was a.
Tough it was a tough year for.

SURE i mean it's it goes without saying too but
like you, KNOW i was In arizona and and you,
know we had all the drama the last few couple
of years of my career with the ownership changing and
are we? Moving and then they went to the, Mullet
but like it's not talked about like how hard that
is like as a, player like you're trying to play
night in and night, out and to your, point like
the energy sucked out of the. Building and then also

it's like you you know that something's up as a,
player but you're they're telling.

You, focus, focus but.

You're, LIKE i got a, FAMILY i got, kids might,
Whatnot and it's like how do you even come to
the rink as a player and kind of put your
head down and.

Grind it's a good point you make because we all get.
WELL i was fortunate Playing Toronto. Montreal you get used
to playing in front of that atmosphere and it's so.
Exciting you could be half a sleep after the anthem's.
Going you're ranked and ready to go and, play and
you go to an atmosphere like that where the building's.

(34:10):
EMPTY i remember playing against The La kings Before gretz got.
There it sucked there was no one. There so the
atmosphere does it really does affect the play and the
attitude and all. That everybody obviously wants to be professional
and go out and do their best and play, well
but it does matter playing in front of a good.

Crowd, yeah go, Ahead i'm gonna steal this one another
one because you Mentioned wayo And i'd be remiss IF
i didn't. Ask you, know he had a brief day
with The, rangers but you know that roster Was wayne Mess,
Leecher Mike rick To Roboti, GRAVES i mean Ol, Samuelson, like,
well we're kind of the memories of that team that

was like one of the like just some amazing, legends
but also guys that are known to you, know have,
fun be a good.

Character we had a great. Team it was. Awesome, uh you,
know having mess and grets on the. Team we obviously
The Leechi, richter like you, mentioned just Unbelievable hall Of fame,
players and we we had a really good. Team we
didn't have a lot in the, minors and we had

some injuries and it really affected our. Team and then
Our russian Defenseman leachi's partner Are Kyra, PATSA i think
his mom died in The philly series and he. Left
he left to go back To moscow for the funeral
and came. Back we missed him for at least two

games and that really affected our. Decoor we didn't have
anybody to replace, him and he was a he was
Handling lindross because he was such a big he was besides,
book he was our biggest. Defenseman. Wayne wayne was, like
where Where's? Potzi Where's? Potsy and they're, like didn't you hear?

Him he's, like, OH i didn't hear? What what what?
Happened he goes his mom died and he flew back To.
Moscow he, said why did you tell him.

We need? Him it's, okay it's just. Gone, now what's the.

Flyers so, anyways we uh it was interesting that that
playoffs BECAUSE i think we would have done really well Against,
detroit But philly just they hammered the ship out of. Us.
YEAH i Think mess's mess had cracked ribs. Leech he was,

injured playing, Injured we lost a few key players and
it just We they were, big strong and on a.
Roll and then we all know what happened In. Detroit
they lost four.

Uh you finish up your Career rush of The kings
In Los angeles and upraising your. Family how much did
you personally want to end your career IN la considering
your wife's acting.

Career, well that was early on when she was when
we first. Met she was. Acting once we started having
kids and she. STOPPED i did want to play IN
la BECAUSE i spent my off seasons, here my wife's from,
here AND I i really enjoyed my last couple of

years playing. Here it was an interesting. Time you, know
when you end your career you, start you still think
you can give, more AND i felt LIKE i could
give more AND i was getting, less and that part
of it, sucked BUT i called it the farewell to.
Her so we did have some Fun Sean thornton did

that his last year with me In, florida and he
just was, like he's, like it's the farewell.

Tour AND i was, like every bar was look out
because he was coming in any of his favorite spots
when he played in his.

Career he was hitting every single one of them on the.
Road it's just you'd come in farewell all to her,
boys fairwell to. Her, yeah all his favorite.

Restaurants Doug barger AND i Were Doug barger AND i ran,
together and it's Fuddy Larry robinson had a sleeping, problem
so he'd always take sleeping pills before he'd go to,
bed you, know nightcore game or. Whatever so he never
was up to make a call for. Curfew SO i

didn't make many of. Those boggie AND i was mostly
restaurants were in our you, know mid early, THIRTIES i,
guess so it wasn't it wasn't so much about the,
bars but we definitely hit all the restaurants and, yeah
obviously some, bars but we we had. FUN i thought
it was a fair farewell tour for both of, us

AND i actually got pissed. Off the next year he
signed With. VANCOUVER i SAID i said to, HIM i
thought we were ending this. Together, Correct, well they offered
me a million.

and you, Know larry he was your teammate and then
YOUR ca coach and HAD i Had larry as my
coach and you, know AND i think he was in twenty.

Fourteen AND i, mean he just an amazing guy to learn.

From but also his personality is so, infectious like like
talk about him as like a teammate to then you,
KNOW i can only imagine knowing him as a.

Coach i'd be LIKE i couldn't take him, seriously be
like fuck, Up, Larry, like, YEAH i know what you're.

TO i WISH i Wish larry was my assistant, coach
not head, coach because it's a lot easier to be the.
Assistant and So. Larry larry was. Great and you, know
he sat me a few times my last year and

a great. GUY i love. Him awesome, teammate really good good,
coach meant really, well wanted everybody to do. Well he
there's one story of, like we really started chartering a
lot back, then AND i Think la we didn't have
our own, plane but they had a plane set up

For so we go back east and again it's the
farewell to, her And i'm. Pissed we leave after A rangers.
Game we go To, washington so he can't go out
after the. Game SO i phoned the hotel from that
when we landed AND i, said put forty eight beer
on ice in my bathtub in my. Room and we

pull up on the team bus to the hotel and
there's a guy from the hotel comes on the bus
and he, goes Is Russ cortnel on this Bus And larry, goes,
yeah what's the. Problem he, GOES i just need him
to sign for all these BEERS i put in his.
Room larry was so pissed off at. Me and then
the freaking young guys they all come to my. Room

it's ray for our AND i. Roommates they leave my
room and they're grabbing the light, bulbs the lights covers
in the hallway and they're bowling in the fucking hallway
and they Called larry and woke them, up so he
was pissed at me for a. Week he was so
pissed off because we woke him. Up but he didn't

like all the beers as. Much larry loved, beers but
he didn't like it as much when he was the.

of all. TIME i know she passed away in nineteen.
Nine you've been married since ninety. Five but if you
ask anybody who knows anything about, jazz all time great jazz,
singers It's Billy Holliday's El, Fitzgill It's Sarah.

MAN I i fortunately didn't get to meet. Her she passed,
away the yurine medical, wife And I'VE i LOVE i,

just being able to listen to her music still is.

That i've heard about, her but amazing singer and we're
we're just blessed to have like we've got her piano behind,
me and her grammy and her ammy and some of

then her mom's like this uber famous. Singer it's. Crazy

how was that for you to kind of see somebody
like your wife that's kind of striving to be the
best at something and you, know just be so good
and how did it kind of work initially and now
that she's you, know taken time off or not acting.

Anymore, yeah the first two, years, uh she was, working
and then the third year she's. Okay she did a
lot of the block shows Like the Wayn, Brothers cosby
she was Off Fresh Prints, Yeah Brett, yeah And days
Of Our lives and then she did the last movie

she did Was buffy The Vampire. Slayer, yeah AND i
WENT i got to see her actually, acting AND i was, Like,
god you guys sit around for hours doing. Nothing and
THEN i was on. Board out of my, Mind i'm,
like what the? Hell but once we had a, kid
she just gave it all. Up but she was dedicated to.

It she did a lot of, commercials so she would
get a couple a few commercials every, year would pay
all her, bills and then she could really focus on
her craft of. Acting she was really good and. Successful
i'd say eight or ten years she did it for
and then packed it in once we had our first,
child and she DID i Think The Wayne's Brothers, show

and we had our first child and she was, LIKE
i don't want to spend this much time away from her.
Daughter so she that was it she.

Quit that's gonna say nothing more noble than putting the family.

Us your Daughter ali won AN ncaa soccer championship while
also running, Track your son lot and played in THE,
Ehl your other Daughter brooklyn plays and The National Women's Soccer,
league and your son in, Law Eric, kendricks has been
playing THE nfl for more than a. Decade in the
words of the Great Ricky, bobby The cornell's family just pisses.

Excellence what's in the. Water there's Other california that's.

Unbelievable, yeah IT'S i didn't, realize like all three of
our kids went to college on. Scholarship last, Year i'm
golf with this guy and he GOES. Russ do you, Understand, Like,
okay you have one kid that goes to college as an,
athlete but all three and they're they're all. Different obviously

(45:39):
a lot in hockey and the girls were soccer and.
Track but we just my dad instilled in us a
lot of, work, ethic committed to your, craft be the
best you can, be dedication to whatever and whatever you
start you. Finish and we just raised our kids like

(45:59):
that and made sure they were doing what they wanted to.
Do but if they started something they didn't, like they
had to finish. It and so my son played baseball
and then he didn't want to play, anymore but because
he didn't like like what he was. Doing and Have
paris my. Wife not too many people know this about,

(46:21):
her but she was an unbelievable track. Athlete would have
been in The, olympics but it was. Boycotted she Had
she had a long jump record that just got broke
a few years ago from the. Seventies she said she
did it in her. Kids and the, girl the girl
who broke it is like this national superstar track athlete

(46:44):
in The United. States she broke it in in middle mid,
school mid mid mid high. School. Whatever, yeah, anyways between
the two of us being, athletes her being really fast,
runner me being a hockey, player the, combination the kids
got a little bit of both and, they, uh they

(47:05):
all three of them had.

Success your, Son, lawton he skated a bit With, austin,
Right Austin Matthews and, yeah and how how was that?
Like at what age did you kind of see him
playing With austin and travel hockey and, like did you
kind of know right away when you saw talking About
austin and and being, like this guy is gonna be
what he's turned out to.

Be, no not. Not the first, Year austin was nine years,
old so pretty tough to, tell and it was it
Was boris Or chenko's power skating, class so it wasn't
a lot of puck, handling it was more. Skating SO
i Think lawton was, Eleven austin was. Nine and then

(47:51):
WELL i got so intrigued By boris his technique THAT
i set up these hockey schools In canada for, him
one In, Victoria COQUITLAM i think it was In, coquitlam,
uh and then went In, whistler and then he did
one In. Quarterlaine And austin and my son and three
or four other kids would travel with bors to these.

(48:13):
Camps and one year we had a SUMMER i think
the next year we had a summer the spring hockey,
team AND i none of THE bc parents wanted this
kid From arizona on our. Team, None like they're fighting,
me and SO i start bullshitting and, said this kid's
going to be the Greatest american hockey. Player to say

(48:35):
he's going to be first round. Pick i'm, bullshitting like
totally lying to the parents BECAUSE i want him to
come up and, play BECAUSE i want Bor i'm sucking
up To boris so he'll keep coaching my. Kid in
the summer first, game he got four goals and to.
Assists he's the best ten year old in The United.

(48:57):
States AND i had no. Idea and then obviously every
year he just got better and better and. Better And
i'll tell you a wonderful human. Being he always stayed
at my mom's. House my mom would phone me and,
say he makes his bed every. Morning he's got great.
Manners he puts his, stuff his dishes in the. Dishwasher

(49:19):
he's a wonderful. Kid like he went through a tough.
Time his family went through a tough time when he's,
young and they stuck together and they had some financial
difficulty and his dad worked his way out of. It
his mom went Worked, starbucks And boris kind of raised
him on the, ice not at. Home but you, know

(49:39):
without Without borist Or, chenko there wouldn't be A poppy
because his nickname Is.

Poppy, yeah that's pretty cool to know about. It it's
an amazing life you've.

Had russ BUT i want To my final thought is
about your legacy with contributing mental health And VICTORIA. BC
i mean you and your brother's establishing The Archie Courtnel
center at The Royal Julie hospital and later formed The
Courtnel society For Mental. Health mental health would become a
lot more talked about, now but that wasn't always the.

Case why was it something that you felt so passionate.

Speaker 5 (50:06):
About, well, unfortunately our dad committed suicide when we were.
Young WHEN i was, Thirteen jeff was, sixteen and we
didn't talk about it until they're in the. Playoffs WHEN
i played For dallas and we played in the playoffs
Against vancouver Against, jeff They jeff did an article and
he told everybody about, it and that was the first

(50:30):
time we always told everyone our dad had a heart,
attack and so it became public that our dad had committed.
Suicide we used to have a fundraiser for terminally ill
kids and all the money went To Canuck place In.
Vancouver we had a fishing tournament for three, years raised
a bunch of, money and after we, retired we said

(50:51):
we wanted to do something in our, hometown but we
couldn't figure out what it was, like we didn't know
what to do For, Victoria British. Columbia and then another
friend of ours was raising money for a bunch of,
things and one of the items that they were raising
money for was this mental health hospital at the emergency

very bottom of this dream list they had And jeff
AND i and my Brother bruce got involved and we
thought we were going to raise one hundred. GRAND i
told my personal story how it affected my life and
my relationship with my, dad and that was in the
newspaper right before the. Event and we had a call

in for mental health On thursday in The seabax ten.
Seventy we raised two hundred and twenty thousand that. Day
our goal was one hundred grand for the whole. Weekend
the next night with the black tie, event we raised a. Million.
Wow and then we had a golf tournament On, saturday
and we raised enough money in two years to build this.

Hospital we thought it was going to take ten. Years.
Wow what we didn't realize is how much it affects
all of. Us whether you threw, SUFFER i, suffer you
have somebody in your life that you know that suffers
or is. Suffered we all. Do you. Can't you can't
go through life without no having a problem that you,

know yourself or somebody close to you that you love
or know that has had a. Problem and so when
people came to our, event it just was like the
purse strings start opening. Up because my, aunt my, cousin my,
brother my, sister my best. FRIEND i, mean the. STORIES

i used to drive The starbucks WHEN i live In
victoria from three to seven and when that story came
out about me and my dad in the, NEWSPAPER i
used to drive there be home in like twenty MINUTES
i was. Coming it was taking me two to three
hours to get. Home, wow because people were stopping me
at the street corner and they were pouring their hearts

out to. Me it had never shared this with, anybody you,
know and a lot of THEM i, knew LIKE i
grew up with, them AND i didn't know their story
and they didn't know. Mine and then, finally you, know
we start sharing our. Stories SO i, GET i, GET
i get kind of emotional talking about it is.

month AFTER i just WAS i. KEPT i went into
a deep depression because she started dating somebody else and
it started affecting my. Game And Sir, sibbard they found,
out like they came to me and were, like what's,
Wrong AND i couldn't. EAT i couldn't, sleep and they
got me into therapy and it was so. FUNNY i
had to take a cab to this certain part Of
montreal AND i all had to be. Secret nobody could

find out because you didn't talk about. IT i had
five sessions with this awesome guy's professor from McGill and
he used to play football or. Something AND i went
on to my best year. EVER i won the most
And Cup player of The year AND i just and
he started asking me questions about my life and my,

dad and then it came less about. That he, goes, well,
listen you're a young. Guy you played for The Montreal.
Canadian you're gonna do. Fine you're gonna meet a girl tomorrow.
Night and so he helped me through. That but then
he helped me with WHAT i didn't KNOW i needed help,
for and and it. Was it was. Awesome SO i
always told People i'm still to. Stay tell, people, Look

don't want to go to your brother or your sister
or your, parents get go to your doctor and tell
them what's going, on and tell them you you, know
and they'll find you the right person to go see
and too many of us are too proud and, wait

watched my dad like in a year, ago from like
This John wayne character to like this weak sick person
who just couldn't get out of bed and was just
miserable and and then eventually killed. Himself it's horrible to.

love what we've been able to do with The Archie
Cordinal center and then the long Term we had a
third a third fundraiser to raise money for long term
health mental health, care and we helped build fifty four
beds in a brand new hospital about twelve years ago In.

Victoria so people come out of our seventy two hour
care and if they need longer, stay they go into
the hospital and they're treated just like anybody. Else now
they don't they used to lock them up and like
they're in, jail and now they're treated in a hospital
and showing you, know showing them dignity and just like
if you had a heart, attack you'd be getting the same.

Treatment so, it's, uh it's you, know unfortunate for us
we lost our, dad but we this has helped probably
us healing to doing all that we've.
