Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's efficiently.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Season two, Episode fifty seven of NHL Unscripted is coming
at You, Coming Up Ahead, Panthers, Dad's Cowboy, Up You Go, Short,
Kings and Cinephile in sixty on Gimo del Toros. Frankenstein
on this special Thanksgiving the edition plus a little Canada Dry,
not the ginger Ale.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
The Canadian teams not faring so well. We're recording this
before the big.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Slate of fifteen games Wednesday night, so if anything happens
of consequence, well sorry, we'll catch up for it next time.
But I can tell you this, when it comes to Unscripted,
we're locked in, except for Tale.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Give you the Cold Shoulder.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
I was in Los Angeles there Crypto dot com Arena
ready for the Senators and Kings. One of the worst
hockey games I've seen in recent memory. No goal scored
in the first two parades, and somebodys just say, well,
it's like a picture's duel. Yeah, but it wasn't. It
was just not a lot of chances, two defensive teams
mucking up the ice. Eventually, the Kings won this game
to one, but more portly tal busy moving, couldn't come
down to the jab Marriott downtown LA.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
How's the move going?

Speaker 3 (01:17):
The move is going, still ongoing. Uh, there's a lot
that needs to be fixed. It's an old house. It's
very nice. We're excited and it was only about seven
blocks from the old place, so we didn't have to
go too far. But just a lot of stuff to do.
Plus my in laws are in town for the holidays.
So I felt really bad bailing on you, Adnam, but

(01:38):
it was not going to happen. And then someone else
asked me if I wanted to have lunch that day.
I said, I had to bail on ad Nan verk
so you're not getting a lunch either.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Didn't want to come down from Beverly Hills in his
Ivory tower to the slums of downtown Los Angeles.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
By the way, JAD that arena. I'd been there to
watch Lakers games. They've never been there for a Kings
game before. Maybe it was just because it was a Monday,
maybe it was Thanksgiving week, Maybe it was coming off
a Rams game. Maybe it's because the centers were in town.
Doldrums throughout that crowd. That is a quiet crowd there
in Los Angeles. I'm amazed by the way they have
the best home record, because there's a reason why they
don't have a very good home record this year.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
The fans did not show up for that one.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
They have a good home record because all the guys
are at Katsui or catch the night before or out
on the town in Hollywood. No, it's that. I mean
that building used to it's I would chalk it up
to the Senators. The California teams a lot, like you know,
when I was in San Jose, we'd play Buffalo, those
teams like that, even if they're good. Yeah, you know,

(02:38):
the fans don't really come out. They like the rivalry matchups.
They like the Western Conference. So it's a little similar
when you're like out east and your Western team coming
out East. So yeah, it's not a lot to love
by the Ottawa Senators versus La King's matchup. I thought
it was a good defensive game. I know there wasn't
a lot of chances, but I thought it was a

(02:59):
good defensive game. But that's not what the California fans want.
I want. They want some blood, guts and glory. That's
what they want.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
But it was nice to have Luke Roboti with us
on set. Who has a statue outside. He's got prime
real estate right next to Kobe Bryant. And if you
haven't seen Luke Robaton a while, little jarring of the
white hair almost looks he's dyeing his hair white. But
he looks fantastic. And I think he's like a fifty
eight fifty maybe sixty like Lulver Fox silver. It is
an absolute silver fox. Luke Robatiz still look like but yeah,

(03:29):
full head of hair, but but jarringly white. I was like,
oh my god, Luke Robaton.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
How are you?

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Does he got the slick back on like long hair?

Speaker 2 (03:36):
No, yeah, I wish he had the long hair.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
This is normally just regular part but very very polite,
very calm.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
How was uh? How was the desk with were Pronger
and bolded?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
How is it? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:45):
So Prongs and Roboti had some good stories because prong
said there was a game that Luke had a bonus
if he got to I think it was fifty goals,
and progs had a bonus if you got to certain
plus minus and Pabldomeitra had a bonus as well. So
Luke was joking Proms like, hey man, I gotta get
the record, and Prom's like, not my watch. I like
what you I'm gonna give you? Was this Michael Straight,
I hate him, Brett Frog gonna give you the SAX record?

(04:06):
Who like damn so but the way Lucas fifty nine?

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Talis saying it looks fantastic.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
For eight, so it's great, good for him.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
They were kind of going back and forth, Prongs and robotiming,
I could you imagine those battles up front in the net?
Speaking of in the net? Goodbye Hella Buck not great
news to the Winnipeg Jets. Downright average for most of November,
three and four record in November, and then they got
the news that they start going defending league MVP Connor.
Hellbuck's out for four to six weeks after knee surgery.

(04:35):
Howie's played at least sixty games each of the past
four seasons. So they lost their first two games with
Eric Comery between the pipes.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Basically, the question is this, jad.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Can Comrey keep the pipes afloat for a Jets team
which is not nearly as dominant as they were a
season ago in the Central.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
I think he can listen, we're gonna find out. He
hasn't played over twenty games in his NHL career in
a season, so I think his biggest season was twenty games.
It's gonna be a test. You're gonn to see what
you have in Comery. And you know, I played with
him at World Championships. He's a great kid. But this
is a contract year for him too, so there's a

(05:14):
lot on the line here. This is like, this is
like kind of the equivalent of, you know, the starting
QB going down late in the season and this and
the backup QB comes in and he just lights the
world on fire for four or five weeks, gets himself
a deal, solidifies himself in the league for the next
ten years. This is Comray's moment. This is his backup

(05:36):
QB moment. He needs to take the bull by the horns.
I think he can. The last couple of games to
watch him lose some couple tough goals, but overall it
was he wasn't getting a lot of help defensively, Like
there's a lot of backdoor tappans, post to post one timers,
top shovel like, not a lot he could do. So
I think it's overall for the Winnipeg Jets, I think

(05:58):
defensively they're not playing like they have in recent memory.
They're also you know, they've dealt with injury. He's all
season long. Neil Pionk I think went down as well.
Now he's out. So it's tough. It's gonna be tough sledding.
They're gonna kind of they're going to just have to
hold pat and and and almost go five hundred, kind
of stay in the race, don't fall behind, don't go

(06:19):
on a big losing streak. But if you have the
opportunity to kind of still hang in there until Hellibuk
comes back, then you're you can go on one of
those long, you know, ten fifteen game winning streak runs
and get yourself back into the hunt. So but I'm
not too worried about them making the playoffs. The more
it's you know, Winnipeg gets once playoffs start, what is
this team going to be? So but for now, I'm

(06:41):
not too worried. But I'm pulling for Eric Comery because
he is a kid that loves to eat at Michelin
Star restaurants. Nice that is that is his claim to fame.
He loves Mischlin Star restaurants. His family is loaded, so
hockey is but a side piece to him, but he

(07:02):
treats it as his main job, which that's just why
he's the great. You would never know. This kid's like
family of a billionaires. You know, it's crazy. You know
the brick it's the bricks in Canada, the.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Bricks is massive.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's his family. Mike Comery, Eric Comray,
that's them.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Wow, pretty wild.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
I don't want to out them there. And then all
of a sudden his house gets robbed or something.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
But the next time I say bricks, I see bricks
at sixte and Leon's I see him all the time.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
A can I'm going, yeah, that's that's the Comery family.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Look at them and it's crazy.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Bricks is dominique.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Can I spin this in a positive and you can
feel free to tell me this is nonsense? But Hellabuck
is always not great in the playoffs, He's you know,
it's playoff Hellibuck. There's regularlyas in hell Buck and sometimes
people say maybe it's overused fatigue, et cetera. Could you
theoretically say, you know what, this four to six weeks
may be the worst thing in the world, because then
Hellbuck will come back a little more well rested come
playoff time.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
All Right, we've we've mentioned it many times. Just played
twenty less games. Now he's gonna he's I think he's
getting this clean up to make sure and ensure that
he's for the Olympics. So I think he's still going
to get those games anyway if he's because I think
if he's healthy and playing, I don't know if they
I would. The conversation for me becomes, is hell a

(08:17):
Buck your start at the Olympics hasn't won anything in
his career other than a vesna. Just because you want
to vesna doesn't mean that you're the goalie that can win.
Do you give it to? Do you give it to
somebody else? Look at the other Jake Older, I mean,
got Jake Ottinger, You got Jonathan Quick, you have who
I think deserves to be out there, and then you

(08:39):
have U who's the other one. I always forget Jeremy
Swayman Like as a time, all those guys have won equally,
not a ting bupkiss, So do you give them the opportunity? Maybe?

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Speaking of Team Canada goalies, Bitnington will be there obviously,
because he's been so great under pressure. How about Scott Wedgwood.
Your boys been unbelievable right now? If the Avalanche he's
in the conversation.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
The Wedgewood, the wood of wedge hard as a Greek pornhard.
How good zech That fucking Colorado team is something else
that's special right there. They don't have an absolute hole
anywhere in that roster. And and I mean, you look
at Scott Wedgwood, that's a good comparison for not a comparison,
but that's a good story for like Eric Cromery to

(09:22):
look at he goes and obviously Comedy's not going to
steal the net from Hellibuk, but he essentially stole the
net from Blackwood and they become this one two punch
that's just been amazing. Two different styles completely, but he
works so hard. He does. He's such a gamer, you know,
having played with them in Arizona. He cares about winning.

(09:44):
He's a funny guy, very analytical, but he's he's a
dog out there. So I think him taking on this
role is amazing and I think he should be heavily considered.
They just added him to the long list.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
He was as the Canada Olympic list of potential participants,
and when.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
You look at Canadian goalies right now, it's a it's
a mess like right now to me, Logan Time Thompson's
my starter, yeah, guaranteed. But I know that Bennington is
the big game experience, so they want him playing. But
he has not played great. He played good his last
couple games, a little bit better, right so, but I
still feel like it'll be Bennington. But I feel like

(10:19):
Bennington Logan Thompson, Wedgwood's my three right now, that's my three.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
We gotta get benningson in the pod. Still. I know
Tal's working on that, so yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
We'll get it. He's working on a lot of guys.
We'll get there. Got the whole NHL Rollodecks.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Well, I don't know if he has the Wall of
Saints oven that'd be Hesper. Wollstatt entered Wednesday six to
zero to two record, a nine to thirty five say percent,
three shutouts in his last four games.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
This is interesting Minnesota team.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
They closed to October a brutal one five and three run.
Before playing the Blockhawks, they'd won five in a row,
post a nine to one on one record in November.
I was talking to Michael Russo on NHL Tonight, who's
the senior writer covering the Wild for the Athletic, and
he was telling me Walstet's been unbelievable for this team.
He was like, there's been a lot of good stories.
You know, it goes beyond Caprice stuff. Matt Boldi's really

(11:07):
had a strong emergence. Their palty kill was disastrous. Now
it has been much better. But Walstad has just really
been honestly incredible right now with this Minnesota team. He's
stolen that away from the incumbent.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah, Gus Buss, Gustavson. I had the pleasure of being
on NHL Now with Kevin Weeks and we kind of
broke down this whole scenario. I mean, you know, Yesper
Walstead comes in and he's had an up and down
start in the HL, had a good year than a
tough year. Now he's found his game. But some people
that I've talked with in the organization, uh, they're like,

(11:40):
this is this is this guy has the potential in
the ceiling to really be something special in the net.
So to have that and Gustavsen is an amazing tandem.
I feel like there's a lot of these tantems that
have emerged this year that are that, you know, the
the era of the goaltender might be coming back more
than we think. You know, I feel like the last
three four years hasn't been great. You know, you have

(12:02):
your your same cast of characters, but nobody's really come
out and shown they can play. Now you have, you know,
the Wedgewoods, the spencer Nights, the Wallsteads, the aser Ops.
You're having a really good little renaissance for goaltenders. So
but I you know, I think the good thing about
Gus they gave him all that money is that you know,
as soon as Walston has kind of a off couple

(12:25):
of games, he'll get the netback. So I think there's
no stress. I think the importance on winning and then
being in a playoff position now is more important with
that money. They just signed Caprice off too, is to
ensure that they're getting to the playoffs. And I like
this team. I watch him, you know, I like him.
I don't see this as a winning team without adding

(12:47):
some pieces, but goaltending wise, they're winning based on goaltending
recently and anytime you can steal some games while you're
figuring it out through goaltending. That's the best case scenario
for a team.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
A lot of problems right now. Meantime for Nashville, and
Barry Trotz is getting hot. He's fed up with the
fact this team is it's been a mess. In an
interview with the Tennessee And on Monday, Trotzi had no
plans to fire coach Andrew Brunette clearly laid the blame
for the team's performance.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
To the feet of his players.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
I need more blank from them. I'm gonna assume me
such shit just as expletive. I need more shit from them.
I'm watching the game systematically.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
I know who makes mistakes.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
When the puck is on someone's stick, they pass it
right to the team. That's not Brunette's fault. He's since
spoken publicly about trading some of his high priced veterans.
Is this a bad look for Trotzi? Do you think
JD or Where does this team go? They rank last
and off, it's third worst on defense. We talked about
a year ago the free agent spending free and it's
not worked out well for them.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
It hasn't worked out at all. I just think the
longer we wait, just rip the band aid off. It's
time to blow this up. It's time to move on.
It's time to get Stam cost and Marcissea off the books.
Those guys still have some value left. I know. The
Stamp Coast contract's tough. With the marciaso on is easy
to move. Go get some young guys, rebuild this thing.

(14:03):
They've completely lost their day. They don't know who they are.
And again this goes to show you that sometimes just
paying all the money to the best free agents doesn't
ensure you any sort of success, Like you have to
put the right pieces together and find chemistry. They haven't
been able to found that. It looks awful right now
just to watch them, and you know, it looks even

(14:24):
worse every game than Askaroff wins. The fact that they
got rid of him over UC Sorrows is not looking
great right now. You know, they committed to UC Sorrows
over Askaroff, And everything I've heard through people was like
a lot of people are shocked that they did that
because how good this kid is and can be, and
he's proven it and he's one of the askar Han

(14:46):
one of the best records in NHL in San Jose
Shark's history by a goalie in the month of November,
it's like seven to one, nine sixty save percentage. Crazy.
So it's just the moves haven't worked, and you know
a lot of gyms will just wait and they'll wait
and they'll wait, and it's like just pull the ripcord,
you know, he kind of it's look to move, Ryan O'Reilly,

(15:07):
look to you know. I I saw the news on
what they're asking for Ryan O'Reilly, and I love factor,
but if they think they're going to get a prospect
in a first rounder, you are out of your fucking mind,
you know, like just because they're in such a bad position,
they're just all those guys are at their lowest. They're
all great players, Like I think, I think factors a

(15:27):
steal for any team, Ryan O'Reilly, But to think you're
going to get that, it's like right now, it's like,
try to get as many picks as possible, or as
many young guys as possible, and just take your licks,
get the first overall pick for the next couple of
years and do what San Jose did and try to
just come out of this quickly. But it does not

(15:48):
look good at all. They're not playing the right way,
they're not moving the buck, they look slow. The only
guy that's good that is pissing a drop is Matthew Wood.
He's great. That's their's it's a good young kid on
their team.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
The other issue is we get to us Thanksgiving. Is
in fact, normally at this point you say, JD.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Al Right, twenty games this season, you can kind of
tell the haves and the have nots, the contenders and
the pretenders. But now the issue is because of parody,
you have no idea who's actually good. On Wednesday, nine
teams the Eastern Conference, nine more than half the conference,
are separated by two points. Out West, nine teams separated
by four points.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
So basically, if.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
You're not the Predators, the Flames, Talles team, the Canucks,
or the Saint.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
Louis Blues, you still have a shot.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
I mean, I don't think it's a great thing personal
because I don't know who's good or who's bad.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
I suppose what you.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Can spin it is even if you think your team
as lousy, they're still in it. But it's a weird
situation where you go, hey, twenty six teams are still
in this thing.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
What a comment the Predator's talles team the Flames. Flames
were his call, Oh Flames, and then you said the
Predator's talle team. I was gonna go Chris Hanson anyway, No.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Flames stir of the year. He's like, they're a playoff team,
like they're gonna make some noise the Flames.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Yeah, Oh well, if they're playing better, they're actually they're
stringing together some wins, which is crazy. Yeah, either parody's
never been, you know, other than like, if you look
through the league and like, give me your teams, I'd
say probably Colorado and Dallas are for real. The rest.

(17:23):
You throw Florida in there because it's the Panthers and
you know, you know that once they're healthy, they'll be
for real. But those are the only two teams right now.
Other than that, it's like a toss up. So I
think you got to be upset if you're any team
that's looked outside the playoffs, looking in but also realizing
that you're maybe one move away from or you know,
a couple of string of wins from being in the playoffs.

(17:44):
And I just saw Don Withdell talk about how he's
a little upset with the UH. I think we'll talk
about that a little bit about the schedule, but yeah,
there's injuries, that's slowing up the trade market. There's a
few things that's slowing up the trade market. But you're
one move away from being a Cup contender just because
there's so few. So Colorado Dallas, that's it. Like those

(18:07):
are the those are my two teams other than that
Anaheim maybe, but I think they're just not proven enough
and Vegas doesn't have the goaltending right now. But I
think they're still gonna end up being at the top
of the Pacific. So it's like it's a weird year.
Like it's just weird with the who's up at the
top of the divisions other than Colorado and Dallas. So

(18:30):
we'll see, it's gonna shift a lot.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
I think I was gonna say the way you spin it,
you just say a lot of teams are in it.
The real answer to me is it's just a lot
of mediocrity and that gets us to Canada dry. As
of Wednesday, only one Canadian team occupy a playoff spot,
and that team is the Ottawa Senators. They just got
back to captain Brady Kuchuk. I was talking to Brady
Monday night. I said, what are your planning? He's like, listen,
I've been ready to go. Let's be honest.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
He's gonna play.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
Saint Louis, which is great Thanksgiving back in Saint Louis.
He'll play Friday for the Ottawa Senators. I hasn't played
since October thirteenth. They basically tread water without this guy,
but more importantly so type entering this season, Oilers, Leafs, Halbs,
Jets all struggling. No more concerning than the Edmonton Oilers,
two time defending Western Conference champions, have not geled at all.

(19:15):
They lost eight to three of the team you just
mentioned the Dallas Stars and suddenly on dry Siddle's very concerning.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
Everything's very concerning. Though we're nearly thirty games in and
still don't seem to have it down or know what
we are. So yeah, I don't really know what to say.
It was just not good enough right now.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
I agree with you on the Panthers when they get healthy,
you're like, yeah, they're legit. The Oilers, this seems to
be a greater concern.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
Yeah, though I don't know if you guys like the
last three years when Edmonton is like perennially very bad
to start and they're like streaky to start. But this
is the first comments I've ever heard, because typically have
you ever heard dry Citle or Connor ever say anything
other than like we're fine, We're gonna be good, We're
going to pick it up. Like now, it's like, this

(20:08):
is the first time I've heard dry st I'll be like,
we don't even know who we are. That to me
is concerning because that is like a that's a message
SHND as well to like GM coaching staff like that
when you say you don't know who you are in
your identity. A lot of the times that's a that's
a fired across the bow for the coaching staff because

(20:30):
you're saying there's no clarity and there's no there's no structure.
I mean, you look at the loss of Glenn Gallatson
and Paul Coffee there on that Edmonton Others team. They
just seem to not be in a rhythm. They just
don't know where they're going. Bowman, I guess just recently
gave the two goalies one month until December to figure
it out. And that's how you respond is an eight

(20:52):
to three shal acking where both your goalies get lit up.
Now they're not playing good defensively in front of them,
but by any means or any stretch of the imagination,
but you know them in Toronto, in the in the East,
I'm very nervous. I don't know if Leon and Connor
can pull these guys out of the fire for the
you know, umpteenth time and get them into the playoffs.

(21:14):
But you know, I never want to go on record
doubting them. So I do think Stan Bollman he needs
to make a move now. And I think because you
look at what they did this offseason, like you give
Walman that contract. Don't love that contract. I love guys
getting paid this you know, this is this is a

(21:34):
player's podcasts. As people would say we're for the boys,
as the Spitting Chicklets and all the NHL podcasts would say,
we are for the boys. But that is a lot
of money given to Jake Wallman. They pay back home
because they had to. You have the nurse contract. Your
back end is struggled mightily, and you'd think by paying

(21:56):
those guys that money. Evan Bouchard, you paying the money.
You think by paying that much money that you're gonna
have a stout decord. It hasn't been that way. So
oh yeah, there's it's it's it's worrisome, but all of
Canada figure it. The fuk out Canada. Drink some maple syrup,
go go fight a bear, bang the Misses and the

(22:17):
snow Oh, get to work.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Tell how many Canadian teams are you end up making
the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
You're gonna say the Habs, naturally, it's your team, the Oilers,
the Senators, the Leafs don't make the playoffs. How about
three teams make it? What do you say, Jets make it?

Speaker 3 (22:30):
I say Jets definitely make it. I say Leaves to
make it. I just well I didn't. Yeah, I find it.

Speaker 4 (22:35):
I'll bet you right now they don't nice.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
I love that pick by JD.

Speaker 6 (22:38):
I'll take that bet. I mean, we got to figure
out the terms.

Speaker 4 (22:41):
But you shave your mustache.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
No, that's his best thing.

Speaker 6 (22:45):
It's my twinkle baby.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
That's that's Tal's signature feature. Come on, I'm.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
Still strongly I I picked them.

Speaker 6 (22:50):
To win the division. I'm not saying they'll win the division.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
You know.

Speaker 6 (22:53):
I picked them at the start of the season win
the division. I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
That'll happen, but I think the least the playoffs. Wow
to get in Austin back. I find it hard to
believe this team would miss the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
You're saying Leafs make it, Jets to make it, Habs.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
Oilers, Habs are worried me too right now? Not getting
any goaltending.

Speaker 6 (23:10):
I'm not sure about Habs.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
I gotta be honest, Mon Tempo's not for a good
and Dobish had a great start now he's come back
down to earth.

Speaker 6 (23:19):
It's a it's a.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
The goaltending is a problem, and they have a lot
of injuries, which I guess a lot of teams do.
But Leaves are in. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not.
I'm I'm not worried about that.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
The Leaf I think. I think Ottawa. I think Ottawa
does some damage. I think uh, I like their team
the way it's belt.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
They'll add a piece too, They're going to add a piece.

Speaker 4 (23:41):
They should, Yeah, I think so them making a splash.
But you know Edmonton, Calgary, no Vancouver, Hell no, they're
they're They're just hanging on by a thread. Uh Calgary,
no Vancouver, no Edmonton. That's the me. I want to say, yes.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
But but.

Speaker 4 (24:04):
A lot of other teams out there.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
We have to determine terms down this bet, the Leafs
will not make the playoffs. When the JD tal says yes,
the mustache stays still to come. Here on NHL inscripted
Trevor Risk, who doesn't love Shorsey.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
He'll tell us the moment he realized he made it.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Big and it involved Brad Pitt. It's coming up next.
Our next guest is an accomplished writer and producer of
first roaster prominence.

Speaker 2 (24:40):
On the iconic series Letter Kenny.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
Before rejoined the show star and creator Jared Keiso on Shorsey,
the international hit about everyone's favorite fictional men's league hockey
star recently teamed up Pianagamakiso on his latest project, I
Killed the Bear. Say what's up for every buddy? Trevor
Risk here an NHL unscripted Trevor, Great to see you.

Speaker 7 (24:58):
Man, Thanks for having me, guys. I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (25:01):
Listen, you become a star in Canada and the USB.
You entertained a very private profile, so I'm happy you're
coming to this year.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
On HL inscription. Uh, what can you share about?

Speaker 1 (25:10):
I mean, just this relationship you've had with Jared the
way this is blown up for both of you guys.

Speaker 8 (25:15):
Yeah, I mean I saw someone online the other day
called Jared the uh Adam Sandler of Canada. Wow, which
you know, he's got his he's got his crew, he's loyal,
he's uh you know, and he's banging out comedies that
are enjoyed by everyone.

Speaker 7 (25:32):
And I feel like, if.

Speaker 8 (25:34):
I keep it up, I could maybe become the Judd
Appetitite of Canada. And I love I like that love
Pat you know, maybe not so funny in person, but
funny on the page, and like a student of the
TV shows and comedy also, I love just like everything
has to be the of Canada.

Speaker 4 (25:50):
You know, it's we need something, we need something.

Speaker 7 (25:56):
Is the Pittsburgh of Canada. You know. It's like, who
wants to do that? I'm not sure, but you're right.

Speaker 1 (26:02):
I've interviewed apatad You're right, student of comedy. He's got
all these books, he's always pumping out.

Speaker 8 (26:06):
Now.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
So if you give me the John Apatowl, can I
trust me? That is a good thing? My friend?

Speaker 7 (26:09):
Yeah, I wouldn't. I wouldn't hate that.

Speaker 8 (26:11):
It's you know, when we have meetings or any sort
of uh, you know, we're spitballing on ideas or something.
Jared calls me the oracle because I have too much,
not like I was one of those latch key kids
raised in front of Super Channel, you know, like I've

(26:32):
had many times before where someone Jared or the network
will be like, I don't know why you're insistent on
making Tony Shaloub references.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
On the show.

Speaker 7 (26:42):
Yes, I love Yeah, like Toto shops an icon. I'm
not sure that. Okay, true?

Speaker 8 (26:47):
You know so, And I feel like that's not far
off from the sort of an Apatow esque universe and
lifestyle for me.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
I completely agree.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
Well, we'll talk a little bit about you and Jared
Keiso and just how you guys connected and how was
there a moment where you're like, oh, I got some
here with this guy.

Speaker 7 (27:07):
Jared and I have known each other since we were
twenty years old.

Speaker 8 (27:10):
Actually I was, there's this very special now like now
it's not there anymore.

Speaker 7 (27:17):
There was this bar in Vancouver that a lot of
us worked at.

Speaker 8 (27:22):
Jared worked at it as support staff.

Speaker 7 (27:26):
I was the DJ there.

Speaker 8 (27:29):
The guy who does a lot of the music for
Letter Kenny was the manager.

Speaker 7 (27:34):
I feel like playfair and.

Speaker 8 (27:38):
Or Hersey Riley and Jonesy worked there as well, and
so we were just you know, young kind of Ontario guys,
moved moved to Vancouver and tried to sort of figure
stuff out. We'velways just been supportive of each other, you know.
When he started the show, all the music was just
like unsigned Vancouver bands and I was one of those

(28:01):
one of those artists. Like if you watch this super
soft birth they scene that's me singing in the background
and the diagetic music there.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
The the DJ music in Shorsey. You mentioned your DJ.
I love the like e d M around all the episodes,
Like is that do you have a big hand in
that or is there because.

Speaker 8 (28:24):
You know Jared, Jared's a huge music fan, like he's
a he's a huge nut and so he and uh,
you know, I think he said this before, even though
he doesn't do a lot of interviews, uh is uh,
you know, he likes movies like Trainspotting and the Danny
Boyle stuff that tells a bit of a story, with
the music being one of the storytellers, you know, And

(28:46):
so we have scripts that are you know, to the
beat of what.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
You know.

Speaker 7 (28:52):
Second of each song is happening, you know, and.

Speaker 8 (28:55):
Then we get stuff on Shortsey, Like we got Electro
Bank by the Chemical Brothers, an incredible music video when
it came out with you know, Spike Jones, I think
did it.

Speaker 7 (29:04):
But then we basically made.

Speaker 8 (29:06):
A music video to Electro Bank and the Alger Brothers
and it's like, I don't mean to, you know, pat
myself on the back here, not me, but like, you know,
the whole crew and everyone involved.

Speaker 7 (29:17):
But it's just as good of a music video, you know.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
I love the train spotting reference. You're right less for life,
Biggie pop right out of the gate. If you're doing that,
you're doing something good.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Trum.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
I love the fact when people have unique fandom, Like
my friend Ben Lyons, his dad Jeffrey Lines of the famous
film critic is a Manhattan guy through and through, and
yet adoors the Boston Red Sox his whole life.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
He's been getting shpit from people and he's like, that's
just the way it is if my heart went to them.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
So for you, specifically living in montre with being a
huge Bruins fan, Bruins just beat the Halves on Saturday night,
obviously exciting game.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
The Bruins off to a bachelor. Now I've been rolling.
What is that like for you? Being a best fan
in habs Land?

Speaker 8 (29:54):
I think, and I may be paraphrase is wrong here,
but I think it was Chuck Closer Whey. He's got
this essay about how there's your arrival and your nemesis.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
You know that's great.

Speaker 8 (30:03):
And you kind of like your rival, right, Like if
I go to my local dive bar and I'm talking
like drop ceiling VLTs in the corner, like it's it's
got to.

Speaker 7 (30:17):
Carry price jerseys on the wall and stuff like that.

Speaker 8 (30:19):
If I ask them to put the Bruins game on,
the sixty eight year old bartender will turn down the music,
tell the entire bar that I asked for this game
to be put on, and then still French.

Speaker 7 (30:37):
Yeah, and then.

Speaker 8 (30:42):
He'll put the but he'll put the game on for
me and within like five minutes they'll be like, you know,
I but BURGANI, They're all good, like you know you
kind of like if you want a rival, you want
it to be the Halves and like living here is
great and we get like massholes.

Speaker 7 (30:56):
In town all the time. Am I allowed to swear
on this podcast? Is that?

Speaker 4 (31:00):
Okay?

Speaker 7 (31:01):
Go for it, and so you know, we're not that
far away, so you get you know, when the Bruins games.

Speaker 8 (31:05):
Are here, you get the massholes up here, which is great,
and but you know, with nemesis, like I hope Vancouver
Canucks go to eighty two every game, like every season,
you know, like I do not like the Vancouver Canucks.
I hope that they always fail in every way possible.
Same with my football fan. I've been a Chiefs fan

(31:25):
since I was seven years old. I love hating the Raiders.
I've got friends of mine who are Raiders fans. And
but then when it comes time for the Denver Broncos,
you know, fifty six nothing, Maybe you know something that
just destroys the hope of that entire fan base and
ownership group. That's what I'm after.

Speaker 7 (31:46):
That's the that's the nemesis.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
You know, you were like a Christiana Koia guy, the
Nigerian nightmare.

Speaker 8 (31:51):
That is exactly how it's I grew up in a
forty nine ers household, which is amazing how it's played
out for the last two years.

Speaker 4 (31:59):
Oh, it's been fantastic.

Speaker 8 (32:01):
Right, And my older brother and I were at that
age he was like ten, I was you know, six
or seven, and he was like, don't copy me.

Speaker 7 (32:08):
You know.

Speaker 8 (32:08):
Your older brother's like, can you The worst thing you
can do is copy me. And I just saw Christian
Okoy on television and here I am this sort of
like sensitive kid who's got like a fanny pack full
of pictures he cut out of cat Fancy magazine and
definitely not a lot of friends.

Speaker 7 (32:24):
You know.

Speaker 8 (32:25):
And there's this guy who's bigger than everybody's and faster
than everybody. He's plowing through everybody and he gets up
with a smile and helps everyone up. Yes, and this
is the Nigerian nightmare for me. And I was like, well,
this is my team.

Speaker 7 (32:38):
This is absolutely love it first sight that absolutely.

Speaker 4 (32:42):
And chirping chirping and shit talking with a smile on
your face and just the shit eating grin. It's it's
just there's nothing better but you getting back to like
Letter Kenny and Choresy. You know what's so iconic about
those shows is the quick chirps, and that's kind of
went viral. That's what went viral initially and kind of
it kind of caught fire, like was that always the

(33:04):
way you guys were back and forth kind of knowing
each other for so long or is that something that
came to be within the writing on the page.

Speaker 7 (33:12):
I think it's pretty natural.

Speaker 8 (33:14):
You know, when Jared moved to Montreal and left Vancouver,
we decided we would have little devices to stay in contact,
and one of them was we would just randomly send
each other a text as just two words and it's
the name of a backup goalie from our youth. You know,
I just like one to day on Thursday, just write

(33:36):
Darren poopa.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
You know, he's just throwing out Don Beaupray or something.

Speaker 7 (33:41):
Don broke Prey was exactly. It was gonna Michael Ute, like,
let's go.

Speaker 4 (33:44):
You know, Ron tug Nut Ron I was gonna go.
I was going Ron, Right.

Speaker 9 (33:53):
So there's uh, you know, there's that scene that we
have in the Valentine's Day episode where Stuart and Wayne
are finding something in common while everyone else is on
a speed dating, you know event, and they have.

Speaker 8 (34:14):
That moment right they're sort of like, who's the toughest
guy in the NHL because you know, the skids do
like the fights and that's kind of the whatever. And
so you know, that's something that was real, That was
something that naturally kind of happened, and so I feel like.

Speaker 7 (34:27):
I feel like that probably was the case. With all
that I mentioned.

Speaker 8 (34:30):
There's things that I don't even know that are you know,
scenes and chirping and stuff from the series that were
you know, inside jokes between between Jared and someone else
like that one was for us.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
I mean, it's interesting when you look at the series overall.
I mean it's again you're trying to kind of balance Wally,
what you guys are trying to do, Trevor, but also
having the cameos and these stars. I mean, with I
Kill the Bear, it looks awesome and you've got familiar
faces in there for the fans Quiso didn't play for
Jonathan Torres, but also featuring Jack Kroger nicol Back and
George Saint Pierre. Know, there's always what you can say,

(35:05):
but how do you balance that star power working those
guys in there?

Speaker 8 (35:10):
Oh? I think that something that I've learned from you know,
Jared and are you know Kara Hafflinson, who's an incredible
executive producer that we work with, is that a comedy
set has got to be chill, like, it's got to
be good vibes on set or else the comedy is

(35:30):
not going to land. You know, you're not going to
get the chemistry right. And so if you're coming into
a set and you're someone who's you know, got eight
million followers online and everyone has already kind of knows

(35:51):
each other, knows each other, you know, how's your mom doing?
You know, that's every member of the crew and and
and everyone already on set, Like you're you're walking into
like a pretty happy h peach, you know, pretty pretty
warm peatrie dish of comedy. Yeah right, yeah, And so
it'd be it would take someone a lot of a
lot of effort to not like find like find their

(36:15):
find their level with that immediately.

Speaker 7 (36:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (36:18):
So is there which which one of all these you know,
amazing cameos in your eyes was kind of like the
funniest and landed the best, or or just was surprised
you the most.

Speaker 8 (36:32):
I'll say that this doesn't it doesn't surprise me because
I actually used to work for him.

Speaker 7 (36:38):
Coincidentally. People, I'll say this, people are going to hate
how much they love Chad Krueger in this. Oh, I like,
are they are?

Speaker 8 (36:49):
He is gonna he just reads so lovable and charming
and it's so funny people if there's still like leftovers
from that sort of you know, pre poptimism, you know,
like Pitchfork era of hating on you know, Nickelback.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
It's always there. Look at this photograph the concerts.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
I mean I.

Speaker 8 (37:17):
Worked for his record label and he was not really
hands on, but he'd show up once in a while.

Speaker 7 (37:21):
And like I knew that guy was funny.

Speaker 8 (37:23):
Like he would come in and and and he said
this to me. He's like, you know who has the
best Nickelback jokes? It's not the Internet, it's me.

Speaker 4 (37:38):
That's amazing, And he does he doesn't remember.

Speaker 7 (37:41):
I don't know if you guys remember, but it was
there was.

Speaker 8 (37:43):
They were supposed to play halftime at that Lions Thanksgiving
game years ago, and there was some you know, exhausting,
you know, online petition about it. Nickelback and Paul Sheer
from the League made a Funnier Die video like making
fun of it, like we got to make you guys
more Detroit, and they're like, well, you can just dress
up as robocopp or what you know what I mean,

(38:04):
like and like to have that sense of comedy it yourself. Man,
that plays really well on camera and on set. It
was joy having him there and I was so happy that.
Uh there was like there was a moment where he
did something and they were like, Trevor needs to take
a lap outside because like he can't breathe from laughter.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
We can't have him hyperventilating and passing out. It's just
too funny.

Speaker 7 (38:30):
You know, you've got those levels of laughter.

Speaker 8 (38:31):
And there was just the one that's just the highest
you hit like once every few years.

Speaker 7 (38:37):
Oh, just like the like Trevor like he's not laughing.

Speaker 8 (38:39):
They look like, no, he can't get breath out because
he's laughing so hard.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Those are the best kind of laughs. It's amazing that
Shorty is just a big hit.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
But now the boys in the Shark Curly on tour
playing exhibition hockey games across the country.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
What can you share about the tour and just how
wild that's been.

Speaker 8 (38:56):
I'm you know, I'm going to the Toronto one. Uh
in uh just over just over a week there. I
know that people got those guys they stick around and
sign every autograph, They stick around, you know till till
the end of it.

Speaker 7 (39:14):
And it's been I mean it's in NHL Arenas this time.
The last one was good and it was in some
of the some I think some of the.

Speaker 8 (39:23):
Ahl Barns and stuff like that, but these ones are
all that, like you know, Rogers and and uh and.

Speaker 7 (39:30):
And like all you know, sort of all all the
big ones.

Speaker 8 (39:33):
And I know we've got some guys who've done who've
played there already, right, you know, We've got Terry Ryan
and stuff and who've who've played these before. And it's
I don't know, I like an alternative live event, you know,
like I I was, I like pro I like pro wrestling.

(39:53):
I like indie wrestling, you know, because it's like, no
matter who you bring there, I bring a lot of
Europeans to that because the European mind cannot compromine North
American pro wrestling. It's all very They don't get it,
they but then they get there and then they get it.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
Yeah. They somebody goes to a table and they're like,
wait a minute, this is real.

Speaker 8 (40:11):
You're like, oh, yeah, that's a real Like that guy's
heard it, like yeah, like wrestle's real.

Speaker 7 (40:14):
I'm like it isn't. It isn't, you know.

Speaker 8 (40:16):
And so I like going to see stuff that isn't
the same, you know, experiences that like listen, I love
going to hockey. But I also like going to McGill hockey,
you know, I like going to the the PW, like
I like going to see just you know, different kind
of stuff.

Speaker 7 (40:33):
And I think that I'm probably not alone on that.

Speaker 8 (40:36):
And so you're going and you're seeing this game, and
you're seeing a bunch of people who you were cheering
into the TV for as a kid, and then against
people who you know you're laughing at through the TV.
And it's kind of a unique experience, right all when
you can still get a beer and hang out.

Speaker 7 (40:53):
It's great.

Speaker 4 (40:54):
Speaking of having beers and hanging out. You know, you
mentioned Terry Ryan, and give me me because I've you know,
met Terry Ryan and been out in Newfoundland a couple
of times drinking with him and his dad and stuff
like that. But give me, you know, I mean, you
have endless Terry Ryan stories, but give me one of

(41:15):
your best ones that you've you've gotten so far from him.
He's furtive, byes, Oh.

Speaker 7 (41:21):
He sure is.

Speaker 8 (41:22):
I think that I don't care if he If you're
a producer on.

Speaker 7 (41:26):
A series or a movie and Terry Ryan is not.

Speaker 8 (41:30):
In your series or movie, I think you would do
yourself a good favorite to invite him to your rap
party anyway, because he's a.

Speaker 7 (41:38):
He's a good diet at a time.

Speaker 8 (41:41):
Boy, I once saw him at like a it was
like a legion or a bowling alley.

Speaker 7 (41:45):
Just put like forty bucks into.

Speaker 8 (41:47):
A jukebox like from the jump and immediately were like,
now these songs are all correct, These.

Speaker 7 (41:54):
Are all the right songs to play. This is like
two CCRs back to back. Love it. That's great, That's right,
all right, let's go. You know.

Speaker 8 (42:05):
So, I mean I think that I don't know. I
I love following everything that he's doing. I love when
he got called up to his old junior team or
as old.

Speaker 4 (42:14):
The East Coast team that was goes to gets the fight.

Speaker 7 (42:18):
Goes and gets in a scrap. Of course.

Speaker 8 (42:20):
You know he's he's pretty beloved and for for pretty
good reason.

Speaker 7 (42:25):
Yeah, good to be around. I would love to hear
also stories of you drinking with him and his father.

Speaker 4 (42:31):
Well we had, uh we had a golf tournament that
Ryan Cloe used to put on. It was Ryan Cloe,
uh Dan Cleary. So when I played for the Sharks,
I played with Ryan Close. He invited me out to
this famed golf tournament and it was in Newfoundland and
it was like a two day tournament. You get there
the night before and you basically guys are like get ready,

(42:52):
like you you don't know what's going to happen. So
you show up and you get dragged to a bar
till four in the morning and there you're just footstomping
the whole night with and Terry Ryan's always around somewhere
with his pops on on George Street and they're grabbing
you and singing and you're everybody's drinking. We had Vincent
the Cavali came out for the tournament and left after

(43:14):
the first night and said, I can't do this, Like
I can't handle this lifestyle, like gotten on a plane.
He's supposed to play to charity golfs. He's like, I'm
not going to survive. Just just left and just because
he was stuck with the the Ryans for a night.
But they're they're sayings our next level. It's it's just
they're they're great people, very happy, go lucky.

Speaker 7 (43:33):
Oh I love it and I love writing.

Speaker 8 (43:35):
Uh, you know quintessential New food lines for him that
he's like, you know, I don't say that right, you know,
none of us say that, right, like, oh, I don't know, I.

Speaker 7 (43:46):
Just read this way.

Speaker 4 (43:49):
I mean, some of the lines they say that. The
one I've heard said before is is they'd go the
one guy said, he go, hey, why I got enough
come to shampoo a buffalo.

Speaker 7 (44:06):
Duels a special rock in the middle of the ocean.

Speaker 8 (44:08):
I was there for the Junos once and it was
right around that time that Iceland, this Icelandic volcano put
all that ash near so all the people who were
going back to Europe, you know, all the big artists
couldn't and so we were all just kind of stuck
in Newfound on George Street for a week.

Speaker 2 (44:26):
So it's oh, good luck alcohol Dead.

Speaker 8 (44:28):
Mount Dead Mounse is gonna play, you know, a bar
the size of my apartment, you know, and uh and uh,
all the every every girl from Newfoundland from like two
hundred kilometers in the interaction came. It was like what
there's like free parties with pop stars here kind of thing.

Speaker 7 (44:47):
That was a hell of a week to have. Newfoundland
couldn't change that for anything.

Speaker 10 (44:53):
Tal go ahead, I think Town's gonna come quick. One
about Shoresy Trevor. I mean, obviously the show is a phenomenon.
I mean, what's the moment for you when you first realized, Okay,
this is this is reaching sort of a critical mass
that maybe we were not expecting because I've spoken with
people who only have a passing familiarity with Canadian culture
and hockey and all of it, and they love choresy.

(45:15):
So when did you first notice, Okay, this is this
is turning into something here.

Speaker 8 (45:21):
I'm a as I mentioned, big NFL fan. Just this
this past week, the Boys being like kind of honored
at the Arizona Cardinals game was kind of nuts, you know,
like they were there, like they were the lineup for
the players to run through and ye you know, the
introductions and that kind of thing. And I remember on
set they were like they were like Trevor, you know,

(45:44):
one of the pridsoners, Like Trevor you know a lot
about the football. This is a this is a good
thing to do, right, And it was like the NFL
owns a day of the week. Yeah, it's absolutely a
great thing to do. I think that there was I
had a moment like what you're describing with letter Kenny.

Speaker 7 (46:02):
I was living in Nashville and I was sitting in
a hotel bar downtown, like right near a bridge Stone
arena and the Oscars were on, and.

Speaker 8 (46:16):
That was the night that on the Red Carpet Brute
Brad Pitt brought up letter Kenny and it was like
my phone kind of exploded, and there was always like
imagine a Texan at a fancy hotel and just stopped
there and that's like ten gallon hat kind of groups

(46:37):
of people and they were like just so excited for
me that they just bought the whole bar like drinks
all night because they were excited for me, who they
just met. And that was that was a big one,
I think. And this is great because I had just
started dating my gal who's from Latvia and she had
never been to North America before and I had just

(46:58):
sort of moved that she came there and she was like,
so this is what America is. Hey, It's just like
I had Texans buying you drinks for Hollywood nonsense. And
I was like, yeah, definitely, this is a regular day
for me, normal normal day.

Speaker 7 (47:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (47:15):
And is it season five coming soon? I mean, is
there anything you can share his production Vegas?

Speaker 7 (47:22):
Yeah, we wrap for that. I don't know.

Speaker 8 (47:27):
I have always the most annoying answer this this type
of question because like, I don't pay attention to when
it comes out until I see an ad for it
was like, oh sweet, because if you give it enough time,
I'm like, I'm the first person, one of the first
people to touch it, right, And so you know, Jared
comes up with stuff and we kind of work in
so with the show. It goes through so many different

(47:49):
people adding so much different stuff that if I just like,
don't reread scripts or don't whatever, and then I watch
it when everyone else comes out, you can really enjoy it,
you know.

Speaker 7 (48:00):
So my guess is probably.

Speaker 8 (48:03):
Soon season five comes out, like within the next few
few months would be my best guess. But I have
no official answer for that i am, except I've seen
the trailer and uh it's uh, it's terrific. I love
that we get to do trailers for the shows that
are different each time and have a different, you know

(48:25):
sort of effect, and the trailer for this one is
just fantastic.

Speaker 7 (48:28):
Love it so much.

Speaker 4 (48:29):
That's that's a beautiful jut Apatow of Canada answer.

Speaker 2 (48:33):
Yes, exactly, exactly.

Speaker 8 (48:38):
Yeah, I think my direction is pointed that way and
I just have to accept it.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
There.

Speaker 8 (48:45):
Yeah, I think that it's fine. Yeah, there's gotta be
some sort of uh you know, Gary Shannling of Canada
is gonna start be really mad at me and uh
for for leaving or so.

Speaker 7 (48:55):
Yeah, that's what's gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (48:56):
Absolutely, I love it.

Speaker 1 (48:58):
Trevor Risk obviously can't wait for Surecy. We'll both pump
our fist when the promo comes out. I kill the
bear of the new product. Well with Jared, this was awesome, man,
Thanks so much, and go Bees.

Speaker 7 (49:07):
Go Bees. Thanks for having me, guys, I really appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (49:18):
Cine Final in sixty here about Del Toros Frankenstein, currently
on Netflix coming roaring in the theaters.

Speaker 2 (49:24):
Listen.

Speaker 1 (49:24):
I love the Frankenstein Kenneth Browna did back in the nineties,
Robert de Niro playing the creature. But this is also
a very entertaining one. And tal can agree with me
one thing about Del Toro. My man brings it. He
loves natural sets, natural disasters, and he's obsessed with monsters.
It doesn't matter if it's the shape of water of pants, Labyrinth.
You watch a Deltra movie, you're gonna get some monsters
and it's gonna be gory and grimy. I thought it

(49:45):
was too long, which is generally might quibble when it
comes to tours having this kind of autonomy, but listen.

Speaker 2 (49:51):
Even a two hour twenty minute running time.

Speaker 1 (49:53):
My only issue is I wish I'd seen it on
a big screen like someone with Frankenstein, especially with the
aesthetics and the production design that he puts into his work.
You want to see that on as big as screen
as possible. Even with my brother decent home setup, it
was I just feel like I lost a little bit.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
Yeah, but I lost a little.

Speaker 4 (50:09):
Bit of that luster. But you're rich, You're rich.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
We know it's not true, but still it's I think
a really entertaining movie. And hearkening once again in a reminder,
tell even these timeless stories can be told well, especially
when you have a specific tour like Del Toro and
Netflix basically give me a blank check to say.

Speaker 2 (50:25):
Okay, do whatever you want to do. Good performances all around.

Speaker 1 (50:28):
Jacob Lori Oscar Isaac Mia goth enjoy Frankenstein on Netflix.

Speaker 3 (50:37):
I had a quick question is are we worried that
Garma Del Toro is going to kind of turn into
Tim Burton a little bit here?

Speaker 4 (50:43):
But in terms of and what can I ask you
a follow up question of that.

Speaker 3 (50:47):
What is your problem with Tim Burton. I love Tim Burton.
I'm a huge fan of his, but he and.

Speaker 1 (50:54):
Like their vision A great movie in a long time,
well before Christmas. That's a long time, A long time ago,
twenty five years ago, Jesus Man eighty nine.

Speaker 2 (51:04):
It's my long time.

Speaker 4 (51:05):
My wife ties me to a chair and forced me
to watch it.

Speaker 6 (51:08):
I mean, it's there's some parallels here.

Speaker 3 (51:10):
There are these incredible visionary directors who come up for
Christmas amazing years ago.

Speaker 2 (51:16):
The guys have been a good movie a long time.

Speaker 3 (51:18):
Well because he keeps remaking the same old stories that
we've seen so many times.

Speaker 6 (51:23):
You know Del Toro. You mentioned Pan's Labyrinth, Shape of Water.
Incredible stories, totally.

Speaker 3 (51:28):
Innovative, and then we get Pinocchio and Frankenstein Pinocchio week.

Speaker 4 (51:32):
That's a good call. I I like it better. There's nothing.
There's nothing original anymore. Everything's an ip is. You just
need the ip everything. There's no more original storytellers anymore.
Wake up.

Speaker 3 (51:45):
That might be Maybe that's the only way these guys
can get that budget is if they do something that
is considered less risky because it's been done before.

Speaker 6 (51:53):
But Tim Burt.

Speaker 3 (51:54):
I love Timbern but I don't want to see another
Alice in Wonderland or you know, I'm not.

Speaker 6 (51:59):
Interested in this stuff. I want to see something new.

Speaker 2 (52:02):
Beetle just too was such a cash grabbing. Really, this
is what we're doing.

Speaker 4 (52:05):
This is what we're doing. We're bringing back the fossil Mike.
I love Michael Keaton.

Speaker 1 (52:09):
Though I love Michael Keaton. You guys seven years old.
It still looks great. But we did not need another
Beetle juice. We don't need this either. Schedule pains GM's
sounding off this week. Tratsey went after his players and
Columbus Blue Jackets GM don Jandell went after the league's
schedule makers. Corell Marchenko, Zacharinsky, Matthew Olivia all banged up.
So Columbus's GM and president of Hockey Operations took issue

(52:31):
with the schedule this season, which has been compressed because
the upcoming Winter Olympics. In an appearance on ts N
ten to fifty What Else, said, certainly there's no time
for rest, and I think that leads to more injuries
than normal. Waddell also mentioned all these injuries have also
stalled the trademarket in the early going this season, How
problematic is it, JD? This compressed schedule. We know it
was an issue last year with four nations. It's an

(52:52):
issue again right now at the Olympics.

Speaker 4 (52:54):
I mean yeah, and it's it's just is what it is.
It's what we're it's where we're at. You're gonna see
more injuries. Guys are playing with some injuries because they
want to be on the Olympic roster and not lose
their spot, so they're playing with some nagging injuries. But
it's this is gonna be the world we're gonna have
to live with. I think in you know, there's I

(53:17):
love the NHL and I love what they do and
the way they grow the game, But you know, adding
two games, in my eyes, isn't the solution to this.
You know, I think the game's never been more popular,
it's never been more interesting, it's never been more everywhere.
We got Jack Hughes, Jack Cues on a date with
Tate McCrae in West Village. Wow, with the pop star herself.

(53:41):
We're hot right now. So you know, you want to
keep all these guys healthy and not add more of
a load to them. That they already have, and yeah,
I just I worry that, you know, they're pushing the
guys too hard, and especially the guys will be playing
the Olympics and then you're gonna have four nations again,
you're gonna have a World Cup of Hockey, You're gonna
have Olympics. So it's like, we're gonna get used to

(54:02):
this compressed schedule. And I don't know how many more
times I can do the Stanley Cup Finals in the
middle of June July. So you know, those are just
my thoughts. Those are a couple of my thoughts. I
think it is what it is, and I understand that
they're trying to brand themselves and get away from the
other sports and kind of own the day. And this
is kind of the growing pains that you have to
go through before you figure out what works. And I

(54:24):
truly believe they will find a system that works. But
I don't love the condensed schedule, but it.

Speaker 2 (54:30):
Is what is a system that works.

Speaker 1 (54:32):
So you can't have hockey in August, but you also
can't have hockey in June, like it ends up being
frustrating because you're like, you have these short training camps.
They hit the ground running. You have to have the
break and there's mandated certain times. Now guys don't want
to practice as much. I don't know what the answer is.
It feels like it's just hockey is inevitably going to
be happening in June, and this is just the life
we have.

Speaker 2 (54:49):
If you're gonna have international.

Speaker 4 (54:51):
Tournaments, that's it. This is where we're going. And just
make our bone, you know, just hopefully try to get
a little bit paid, a little bit more for the
podcast and be good to go. Just be compensated for
a time.

Speaker 2 (55:02):
Yeah, I didn't know that was a part of it,
but if that happens, I'd be fair.

Speaker 11 (55:04):
It'd be amazing, right, compress schedules, shirt whatever, maybe a
video element. You know, I would love to see iHeart
just I'll wear you know, I'd love to wear an
iHeart sweater and an iHeart baseball cap for video element,
just to show that we are sponsored by the beautiful
company that is iHeart.

Speaker 1 (55:20):
Especially if we go to NHL Tonight together. NHL Tonight
first Shift. I was said Brian Boyle last week, Steve
co If you and me are on together wearing iHeart
Garb who says no to that.

Speaker 4 (55:29):
Who says no to that. That's must see YouTube content.

Speaker 2 (55:34):
Two more topics here for you. One shot to the
little guys like me.

Speaker 4 (55:38):
No, I don't want this one. I don't like this one.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
Okay, fair enough.

Speaker 4 (55:40):
Next, let's talk about Jason Robertson in the longest gold
streak in Dallas Star's history.

Speaker 2 (55:46):
Okay, go ahead, you want to talk Jason after after.

Speaker 1 (55:51):
Darryl Demurr story, Panthers Dad's cowboy up, I like this okay?
And enjoining their annual dad trip the Florida Panthers players
dad's dress for the occasion. Monday night, they watched their
boys beat the Prides eight three in Nashville, all the
dads at tend of the game wearing matching jeans, cowboy
hats and vests. A great way to enjoy watching your
kids get a big way in music City. We've had
your dad, Daryldmers on the pod. He's coaching hockey guy.

(56:14):
How did he get along on the dad trips during
your career?

Speaker 4 (56:17):
A one story always comes to mind, and it involved
Nashville and Carrie Underwood. It was like, I think it
was my first or second in San Jose and we
go to Nashville and you know the guys are the
dads are, you know, running a muck in Nashville and
having a good time. And so, you know, we play

(56:40):
the game. I play the hockey game. I think we
won that game as well. So we get downstairs and
kind of see my dad and he's kind of like
a little he's like a little down, a little upset
or you know, still happy we won and you know,
yucking it up with the dads. But I'm he's like,
you wouldn't believe what happened, Like what do you mean?
And he goes, I'm walking We have the suite, so

(57:02):
I'm walking through the whatever the hallway between all the suitets,
and he's like, I'm just walking around, going to the
bathroom or you know. He's just like I was maybe
going get merch or something. And he goes, I look
into one of the suits and he goes, it's Carrie
Underwood's sweet you know, married to Mike Fisher, and she go.
He goes, he like looks And at that time, my

(57:25):
dad we watched American Idol. Carrie Underwood was like the
biggest thing in our house for a little while for
my mom and my dad.

Speaker 2 (57:35):
Huge.

Speaker 4 (57:36):
So my dad like kind of takes a step in.
He's wearing like a San Jose Sharks jersey, my jersey.
So he walks in and somebody like immediately like, hey,
who are you x y z And it's it was
like her manager, her brother or security or something, and
he sees her. So he's like talking to security guard
and say, hey, I'm on a dad's trip with the

(57:57):
San Jose Sharks. I'm here. My son's playing in the game,
like you know, me and my wife love Carrie Underwood
and all the meanwhile, Carrie Underwood kind of like glances
over at the door and sees the.

Speaker 6 (58:10):
Security guard over her brother who was talking about glance.

Speaker 4 (58:14):
And she goes like hey, and then the guy looks
back and she goes, get him out of here. So
my dad, I thought he was going to go the
other way.

Speaker 1 (58:25):
I thought you were going to say she was and
that guy was being a prick and just goes, dude,
get out of here.

Speaker 2 (58:30):
Sorry, no, No, she walked in, she booted, She boots him.

Speaker 4 (58:35):
He gets bounced out of the out of the cool
Kids club in his little in his Sharks jersey, and
I guess he called my mom. He called my mom
and and he's like, my mom's like hell, and he's like,
we don't like Carrie Underwood. Now he's like haters. She's like,
what happened? He's like, Carriewood kicked me out of her suite.
I was like, that's what you get for trying to

(58:57):
brush shoulders with the stars.

Speaker 1 (59:00):
I think I think it's a jersey, though, I think
if it was anything else, so she had a you.

Speaker 4 (59:03):
Know, I love it. I fucking love it. I love
that he got bounced.

Speaker 1 (59:11):
But do you think she was showing her true colors?
Do you think she's not as warm and friendly as
people realize or was it just a shark jersey?

Speaker 2 (59:17):
She goes, hey, beat it.

Speaker 4 (59:19):
I don't think it was a shark's jersey, but she
maybe just was like, who is this right?

Speaker 2 (59:23):
Random coming in my sweet Yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (59:25):
This super fan, absolute mute and coming in trying to
shake my hand with sweaty palms to get out of here.

Speaker 1 (59:34):
It was.

Speaker 2 (59:36):
So disheveled, that's what it was.

Speaker 4 (59:38):
Well, I just love it because no, my dad's not
like my dad's like always in a suit, always dressed nice,
so like his hair was done and he's like presentable man.
So it's just so funny that he gets bounced because
it just killed him. It crushed him.

Speaker 2 (59:52):
Oh I do like that, said to your mound, like
we're down on her now that's it. We're not watching
a recolo now we're done.

Speaker 4 (59:56):
So our whole family is out on Carrie Underwood.

Speaker 1 (59:59):
I like it, you know, with the virture now out
on her too, solidarity with the burs.

Speaker 4 (01:00:03):
It's bullshit. Imagine, imagine she listens to the podcast That's
not gonna happen and she reaches out and sends a
signed microphone or boots.

Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Were back in that we're back in Carrie Underwood, or.

Speaker 4 (01:00:14):
Like or my dad told the wrong story. My dad
was like walking in like trying to grab at her
and Potter and like got like tossed out.

Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
That's the better story. He was aggressive and they're like
sexual advances.

Speaker 4 (01:00:27):
Here, yeah, or she like remembers that story and she's like, yeah,
you were you were.

Speaker 1 (01:00:32):
Eye with elbowed her eyes and like making me uncomfortable.
That's why I got ready.

Speaker 6 (01:00:36):
There's no way she remembers that story.

Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Of course she doesn't. You how many times you know
how many times she's waved people offful up security multiple
the last three you want to give.

Speaker 2 (01:00:45):
Some love to j Rob, not Jay Roy.

Speaker 1 (01:00:48):
Jason Robertson's seven game goal streak eleven goals a new
Stars franchise record, previous record held by Mike Bdano.

Speaker 2 (01:00:55):
Incredible.

Speaker 4 (01:00:56):
Yeah, especially after you know he was stood. I would
say that I want to take credit for that because
he listened to my Empty Editors podcast and saw that
I had called because we know the story that I
had called that year of Fluke Yes, and he took
it to heart. I'm a fan of his, I'm a
super fan of his now. I loved how analytically he is,

(01:01:16):
the way he thinks the game, and he's been good.
That Dallas Stars team's been mighty mighty good with him
and Wyat Johnston there love it. Jamie Ben got his
four hundred goal last game too, So crazy. This is
a team man, look out. They're meaner. They're meaner this year.
Miko Randon's getting suspended. Kids heads are falling off, kids,

(01:01:37):
pet's heads are falling off. Where fucking Dallas Stars baby
put the belt buckle to him.

Speaker 1 (01:01:43):
Mad Nan Stars and Avalanche both's great. Robertson's now tied
for third the NHL goals by McKinnon and Morgan Geeky,
who's been unbelievable for the Boston Bruins. Speaking of unbelievable,
I'm off to Buffalo after Black Friday, huge game Bears
Eagles both eight and three.

Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
My brother's a Bears fan.

Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
But after that, I'm gonna be checking out the Winnipeg
Jets minus Hellibuck, your boy air Comray against the Flow
Sabers and you just said we're going yeah, exactly, Jet
Sabers on Monday Night Prime and We're off to Buffalo.
You just talked to Tge Thompson twelve goals, great guy
and dressed up his Monsters Inc.

Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
For Halloween and terrific segment. He dressed up his randall
exactly am always.

Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (01:02:26):
A lot of you got a lot of flak for
the Denhim sweater.

Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
People were like texting me and be like, all the
money in the world you were in a Denhim sweater.
I was like, I don't know, kind of I kind
of fucked with it. No.

Speaker 2 (01:02:38):
I thought it was a good look.

Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
You and you and week see a nice and cash
I saw because they reared it on on the fly.
So I texted you, I said that was a good poll.
You said Tatee Thompson met his wife at the Halloween party.
But you said props to Jay roy Our producer.

Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Yeah, that's why you have good researchers, you know, not everything.
All the topics you bring up is from your mind's eye.
It's a lot of Talo Ponchevski. Well, I give love
Jack Hughes. Jack, that's small. That's small. One he wanted
us to do is what he didn't care for.

Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
You just thought it.

Speaker 4 (01:03:05):
But the Zukerell, that was a tough one. He's not there.
They're not all the winners.

Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
Well that's okay, But I like to Jack Hughes.

Speaker 4 (01:03:10):
Tate McCrae was a huge storyline.

Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
Tate McCray, fantastic.

Speaker 4 (01:03:13):
That's Oh that's a big time.

Speaker 2 (01:03:16):
All right, thanks so much for checking it. Go ahead,
last not from you.

Speaker 4 (01:03:19):
You're going to Buffalo. Make sure you go to bar Bill. Okay,
best wings in beef on wex sandwich. This bar Bill,
the little side of town. Okay, after the game boom,
it's the spot.

Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
And Thomas Jody Shelley, John Foresland bar Bill. I'll report back.

Speaker 4 (01:03:37):
Well, what a what a cast of personalities there.

Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
Chris Pronger, Blake Boulden as well in the mix.

Speaker 4 (01:03:43):
And a lot of intelligence there well.

Speaker 1 (01:03:45):
