Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
Awesome episode of NHL Unscripted coming up as we're talking
about some wild series right now.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Whaler's Mafia is alive and well.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Joel Quin goes back in the league news involving a Lesnar,
David mammett'skn a new movie, and Thomas Hickey, one of
our friends from NHL Network and Amazon Prime, has some
great stories not only but his days with the Islanders
at Little Limarell, but also his own PLAF memories and
what he's seen from the second round. We start through
JD in a way that I haven't started ever before
in the podcast with organized Religion. I don't mean to
start on behalf of all Muslims are have tow speaking
(00:49):
all we have all Jews. But has there ever been
a more popular pope than this pope right now? This
guy's unbelievable, the new Pope Leo Chicago guy sports fan,
huge White Sox fan.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
What do you think? I think he might be a
huge Blackhawks fan as well.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
I think someone's going to start throwing sports questions out
of hey, Kane Taves, Pope, is that a house.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
And day or what.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Who's the new Pope.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
The new Pope is a huge white Sox man. It's
the first ever American they announced, they announced the Conclave
conclive as you play, I'm just messing with you.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Story in the world. People are loving the fact there's
an American pope.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Yeah, Chicago, you gotta love a little shy town stand up.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
No, I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
This is the weirdest year of the last two years
of life. Just Chicago, pulpe deep dish in the Vatican,
Lou mal Nadi's on.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
The Yes, Lou Man's up.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
In the worst pizza ever.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
It's just too thick, right deep.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
I mean it's it's pizza soup, Yeah, pizza soup bread. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And then we get to the hockey leave some Panthers. Man,
what a staunch defensive effort. But the defending Stanley Cup champions.
I was, I swear to got you. It was three
to one in Game three and I'm texting by Toronto
buddies like, well maybe this is the year. Like if
you get past the Florida Panthers defending Stale Cup chas,
I like your road now one of the Canes and capitals,
who know just to even be in at Stanley Cup
file as you Toronto in that moment would be amazing.
(02:11):
And then what happens. Florida wakes up. They bounced back
up four to three. Leaves do fource over time, but
eventually Florida does win it. And then we just watched
together this game four a staunch defensive effort to nothing.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Shut up.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
But Brosky was excellent some timely saves. Our buddy John
Forestland on the call along with Shane Nighty. After two
periods fours he was saying, you know, wolve's the story
right now. Twenty eight saves, but the story also became
some nasty play oel hit interference two minutes Eddieowys saking
the broadcast could have been five minutes. You see dome
at the end with a nasty hit, feisty series. Bottom
line is this we're all square after four.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Yeah, that was a kind of a That was just
a Florida Panthers old school game from last year. It
just they kind of they've really been investing in the
in the hitting and physicality on the on the d
man like you know, Chris tannev and I feel like
Morgan Riley and and and Jake McCabe. They're they're really
putting a beating on them. And the best part about
(03:05):
that game tonight, I think for the Florida Panthers they
can take with them is the neutral zone. I thought
the neutral zone was tight. They weren't letting Toronto come
through it all and they created that turnover that leads
to the Sam Benacal. So you know, Joseph Will, you
said it, Joseph Will get him a beer because he
was kicking early. And you know, if I'm looking at Toronto,
they just looked frustrated and they looked like Toronto of old.
(03:28):
Too many penalties, you know, they're trying to It happens
the past two years or even you can go back
three years with Florida. It happens all the time. They
just kind of drag you into their their game. You
start getting dirty with them, you start taking penalties, and
they love it. That's where they live, That's where they
want to be, is where it's a really ugly, gritty game.
And I feel like they just kind of pulled Toronto
(03:48):
the last two games, especially after you know, giving up
the three to one lead in Game three, they just
pulled them back into the deep water a little bit.
So I think Toronto needs a reset again. The one
thing Chris, you know, we had Chris Pronger an Angel
Network and he said, he said, listen, you hold home, sir,
you win at home. That's what they're supposed to do.
Florida did it. Everybody thought Toronto was just going to
(04:09):
roll over them after two games. It's now a two
two series. You go back Toronto. Toronto's got a whole
serve now and just regroup and hopefully Craig Barubay can
get his team playing back the right way, because right now,
last last tonight is was or this game four was
just not indicative of the team that Toronto has been
all year. It was they looked frustrated, They look frazzled.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
So how do you do it when you're a team
that's frustrated? You have this, you know, overwhelming offensive talent
in Matthews Marner and Neelander Taviars.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
How do you get how do you get rolling?
Speaker 5 (04:37):
Again?
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Well, just if you look there just three guys stagnant
on the far blue. They're trying to make these little
tip plays through the middle and through the neutral zone.
And I think Florida is a good job of staying
on top. So you got to kind of build a
little bit more speed. It looked like Florida sat back
and kind of waited for Toronto. So if I'm them,
I kind of build the rush a little bit more.
Get some guys swinging behind Willy Andander, Marner, William Kneelander
(04:59):
and Marner. I know you want to play north and
play quick, get it in on the for check. But
you know when Toronts, you know, not getting the four
check going, and they're just allowing Florida to break out
the puck as well as turnpucks over the neutral zone.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
It's just not a good recipe.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
And Florida just eats that shit up because then they
just start going downhill, they start taking liberties, cheap shots,
and and then yeah, and then.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
You see what happens.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
So for Toronto, I feel like you have to get
back to your game, get back to home ice. You know,
you can hang your hat that Joseph Old is really
playing well coming in in relief of Anthony Stolar's, but
you just need to get everybody back on track now.
It needs to be just a little bit and and
number you know, listen number sixteen of all the points
I've just made is stay out of the stay out
(05:41):
of the box. You can't four penalties in the first period.
You gave them all the momentum, and it took you
two periods to kind of get back on track. I
thought they had a good push in the third, but
it's too late. By then, you're kind of it just
seemed like Florida had settled in and and I mean, listen,
the other thing too, is you're playing a hell of
a goalie in Sergei Bobrovski, and you got to find
ways to get to them. And I thought it was
(06:03):
a little too late before they started getting in on Bobrovsky,
and he was kind of warm and ready.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
To play hockey. And that's what you get too, too
back to.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
You witched after the first two games.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Pebroski was not looking like Bobrovski esque, but certainly much
better back in home right now, and you mentioned Woll
thirty five saves.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
He's got his group back. In the meantime.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Miko Ranton has done it again already had an assistant
Game three against the Jets. He's said Patrovicks game winning
the third pri then scored a ridiculous insurance goal forty
nine seconds later, Stars in up to to one against
the Winnipeg Jets Patrovicks Winter technley was a kick, but
officials a lot of after a lengthy review when they
ruled the Jets goalie Connor Halibuck put the puck into
his own net. Once again, much of the focus on Ranson.
(06:43):
We'll get to Hellibuck in a second first off. Ranton
a playoff for the Ages, seventeen points down his last
six games.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Incredible.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
We just did a we just did a clip of
random last last last video or last you know pod
we did and again once again Miko Ranton and just
playing herculean effort. And you know, I don't know if
it was more or the lack of Connor Hellibuck on
the road, but you know, I think and I just
got to touch this quick. That was way too long
(07:11):
of a review. That was the most non kick. He
kicked it from behind the goal and Hellibuck swats it
in and it took him about forty five minutes. But yeah,
I just think it's it's you can't get any momentum
if you're Winnipeg when you get on the road, Like
I thought, this is a perfect game for Hellibuck to
stand on his head. The Dallas was pushing, you know,
(07:34):
they're getting opportunities, and he just looked shaky again. And
just these these goals that shouldn't be going in on
a goalie of his size. It's just not something that
gives you a lot of confidence, and I feel like
it just frustrates your team. It slows them down. And
I mean, listen, Dallas did what they need to do.
I thought Jake Ottinger was fantastic in nets back there.
And like you said, Miko Ranton, is you look at
(07:57):
this trade and it's getting worse and worse by the game.
The further Dallas goes into this series, it's getting worse
and worse in the sense just to the fact that
Colorado was gonna have to play him for the next
twenty five years over longest contract is is gott It
just it's gotta sting so bad.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
How about nasm Casuret, former teammate, tweeting out right, number one,
you always to keep the dogs hashtag number ninety six.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
He's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Speaking of big bodies, Connor Hellibucks so he looked like
he'd figured it out. After shutout in his previous start.
As a matter of fact, he was talking to Scott
Opost game was yep, I had some things to work through.
We found it now and back in my groove. So
much for that. He now say seven to seventy two
save percentage on the road so far this playoff, and
his save percentage of the last two postseason six games
(08:41):
eight oh one on the road. How do you solve
a goalie who can pitch a shutout at home and
then all of a sudden it looks so poorous on
the road.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Do you just play Eric Comray on the road and
just hope the hope for the best. At this point,
just play him on the road and hope for the best.
I would just pray if I'm winning PAG next game,
being like, listen, just take a swing here, Eric Comery,
you're getting the start.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
You're getting the start. Sorry, Connor Wiz at home.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
I I his third Desty.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
He's gonna win the heart and the guy can't win
unless it's a Canada Life Center.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
It's crazy.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
It's it's it's crazy.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
The way he gets so small, he gets so compact,
and he's a big guy. He relies on his structure.
He's not a goalie that's gonna like make any acrobatic saves.
But for some reason, you get on the road and
he gets so small on the net and you look
at that the ranting and goal he literally drops his
stick as he's sliding across. And then the next goal,
I think the fifth goal, he's completely out of his net.
(09:39):
He's not even making an effort for an empty net goal.
It's just like, oh, yeah, here you go. And it's
just kind of I don't get it, because he's so
when he's on, he's so good, but just for some reason,
he has the yips on the road and he's saying
all the right things to the media, but you know,
proof is in the pudding right now and he needs
to he needs to figure it out because if they
go down, man, they lose this next game.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
It's it's I'm worried.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
And but again, I think we took Dallas here before
round two, so you know, we're looking good and Dallas
is looking really good. Sons Miro Hayskin, and so if
they by any chance, I don't know how hurt he is,
but if they get him back, I mean, this is
kind of the team to beat.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
No, I'm with you and I think Game four is
and must win for Winnipeg.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
You go down three win to Dallas, You're not gonna
win that series after with Dallas against.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Coge Cott jury. Yeah, it's been great.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Vegas and the Oilers again.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
You and I will never count out the Oilers again
after going up two zero in this series in which
both of us call the Golden Knights, and in Game
three again.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Spirited finished tied late in the third.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Vegas is missing mark Stone for much of the night,
a great chance to go three to zero. Riley Smith
cors is second the night, less than a second remaining
a buzzer beater.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
You see that in the NBA.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Do not see that hockey point four seconds left, poor
Leon Dreysel trying to make the play, and Edmonton's goaltending
is the soap opera pickard out with an injury, Skinners
back in the craze pickards day to day.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Skinner's going to start game four.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
You were talking early, had that great set of a
pickard five and zero, like great fear of the playoffs,
and now listen, Oilers are still the driver. He throw
two winning game fours at home, but Vegas Holy Salvation
in that win.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Oh, it was a Riley Smith legacy game right there,
he was he was. I mean, you saw Rangers fans
on Twitter being like we I didn't see him skate
that fast once all season with the Rangers, and then
he looks like the.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Youngest guy out there.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
I mean that that play he made on the winning
goal was just the wherewithal to have that much patience
knowing there's only like three seconds left, and then and
again that that was a great play by him, but
that defensive that whole played defensively from the time he
got dumped into the corner. It was an absolute disaster.
(11:43):
Brent Koulak going to finish his hit. He should not
be finishing his hit with a stick in the air.
He's got to get stick on puck. Puck gets through,
and then you have Connor and Darnel and there's diving
at a at a shot. I don't know what you're
doing to stay on your feet, and then from there
skinner overslides and then again the thing that's been like
an absolute epidemic in this playoffs the last four games
is Puck's going off, you know, the respective teams his
(12:06):
own goals, so to speak, Leon dry saddle, there's nobody
around you. There's half a second left. Get your goddamn
stick out of the crease. Like anytime you're if you're
if you're a defender, And I was always told this
when I played. If your feeder in the crease as
a D man, you're in trouble because if you're in
the crease, you're taking away space. It's easy banking off
(12:27):
of you. It's half time. It's happened time and time
again in this playoffs. I don't know why guys are
getting kind of kind of sucking back into the into
the blue paint, and they're just you're just not helping out.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Your goalie.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Just clear the front, stay out, that's his space. There's
a reason why, you know, you see all these goals
going in because it's just these luck Everyone's like, oh,
lucky bounce, lucky bounce. We know, get out of the
goddamn crease. Let your goalie play it. And then you know,
Leon's a hell of a player, having such a great series.
You know he's one of the best players in the NHL.
But it's just one of those things. With less than
(12:59):
a second left, I know you're trying to do the
right thing. I know you're trying to help out, but
just get your stick out of there. The game's over
and ends up tipping it in and now it's two one.
Vegas has life and I really thought that, you know,
started that game, I was like, well, Edmonton looks great,
they're looking they're looking really good right now, and then
just Vegas kind of chipping away playing their game. I
(13:21):
know they lost mark Stone there early and and that's
a big loss for them, but again it's it's time.
You know, you see Skinner Stu Skinner go back in
that net, and it just seems like a different team
a little bit. I don't know why if they don't
play with confidence in front of them, but you know,
they looked way better against with Calvin Pickard, and that's
the last five six games they just I thought, I
(13:43):
thought Skin played well. He just they were giving up
Grade A after grade A and really big chances. I
think that you can't be doing that with with you know,
a goalie that's been out for six games. You gotta
give him some confidence to play a little bit tighter
in front of them.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
All eyes will be on Skinner in game four again,
Edmonton at home will try to take a three to
one stranglehold, but the fact they've had six come back
victories to begin the playoff is remarkable to me. Even
with the Game three loss, we'll see Hurricanes and Capitals.
I told you at the start of the playoffs, Kines
and Devils. I couldn't care less. I still don't care
about the Hurricanes. Capital Seriously, I think involving Hurricanes, you
(14:18):
just feel.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Can you give me the ad?
Speaker 5 (14:23):
Then?
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Just the like Kaine's Capitals is on.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Andre Svetchnakov kept up his scoring the pay six goal
of the playoffs. Jack Rossly, Eric Robinson, Jackson Blakell scored
for nothing shut out. It feels like Caroline is a
tune to be here. Up to one against the Washington Capitals.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Well, it's been kind of a playoffs of goaltenders and
and you know, Freddie Anderson, just you, Rob Brendam are
nothing but great things to say about him about last game.
He really kept him in that game. But kind of
you're right, other than other than the Tom Wilson and
Jordan Martina kind of battle that's been going on, or
there was a little bit of an Ov versus Burnsy,
like these little one on one battles.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
It's kind of just.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Been a it's been a it's you know, it's been
one of the those series that it's the second round
and you kind of expect there to be a little
bit of a drop off. And honestly, I don't know
if Carolina or Washington, whoever gets past this is going
to be able to beat Florida or Toronto. I'm just
not sure they'll. They'll they'll have the juice, so we'll
see kind of how it goes. But you know, big,
(15:21):
I don't want, you know, if they go down three
to one, it's gonna be tough to come back against Carolina.
Like you said, the same thing with Dallas and Winnebeg.
They need to tie this up. Going back to DC here.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
It would be interesting if Carolina finally makes a run
of all these years, would say, well, they need a
big strow, they need a big straw. They get Ranson,
Ranson and goes and all of a sudden, if they
finally actually did push through, I do think it would
be an amazing story. Is blanned as I find them.
Whaler's Mafia is never bland. I love Whaler's Mafia, as
does our mantal Anaheim general manager Paperbeek naming his former
Hartford Whaler's team meet Joel Quinville, the Ducks head coached
(15:51):
on Thursday q as when the Stanley Cup, three times
head coach of the Blackhawks where coming of the Panthers
in twenty nineteen, resigned October of twenty twenty one, so
he took his penance four years of penance after meeting
with NHL Commissioner Garry Batman with the Blackhawks response to
Kyle each his claims that he was sextually assaulted by
a team assistant regarding Quinville's association with the Blackhawks during
that time, the Ducks announced that they conducted a comprehensive
(16:13):
review of what took place while Quinnville was head coach
of the Blackhawks in twenty ten. A lot of opinions
about q coming back bear in mind is GM in
Chicago's Stan Bowman also was done in October of twenty
twenty one with his name others ender manager last summer
again Gida, I was not there. I don't know what happened.
If they conducted the thorough investigation him to believe that.
I think Quentville is a great coach and he's ever
disputed that. And to me, he took his time out.
(16:34):
It wasn't like you know, this happenals and he got
a job next day. It's been four years. To me,
I'm willing to kind of just say, I wouldn't say
life by guns, be bygones.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
But you move on? Where do you land on this?
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Would you like see Quinnville blackbauld Are you happy to
see him back in the NHL.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Well, you're really trying to set me up here, Eh,
set me up with a nice Matza ball.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
It does a nice buile of shit.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
I listen, I don't know, like to your point, I
don't know what happened, But you know, Joe Quinnville apparently
he said in his speech he called cow Beach and
he also, you know he I think he really wanted
to make sure that it was okay for him to
take this job, and then kind of was trying to
get his blessing, and I'm assuming Kyle Beach gave him
his blessing. I think, you know, Joel really did kind
(17:18):
of acknowledge that he needs to do better and he
needs to not you know, needs to not just kind
of bury his head in the sand. So hopefully he
learned and and you know, I think four years for
for this has he changed. I mean, that's on the
that's the choice of Verbek, and but there's no denying
that he's one of the best coaches in the NHL.
And and even though he's taken two years off, you know,
(17:40):
hopefully he's learned. And I'm sure he's been studying the
game as well, so he might have a few tricks
of his sleeve. And I think this is a good
coach for you know, putting all the shit aside that
happened in the Chicago organization. I think this is a
great coach for this team. I think he's just say it's.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
An attractive job, right Zegris Cutter Coachi.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Yeah, well, if you kind of look back, he's got
he's got a lot of experience because if you look
back with those years in Chicago, we had some young
stars there in Patrick Caine and Jonathan Taves and he
really taught them, you know, how to play the right way.
And also he built this fantastic team. And I'm sure
he's gonna he's gonna have some suggestions for for the
(18:18):
for the management to have Pat Verbeek there and in
Anaheim to bring in some more players to compliment these
young guys. But yeah, this is a team that's trending.
They're on the up and up. I mean, they have
a lot, a lot of good talent. Jackson Lacomb, you
got mctavitch, you got Cutter Gotz, you really came on
here the end of the year. You got obviously what's
his name, that little sweet kid. To tell what's the suite?
(18:40):
I always Leo Carlson. Uh, you have a lot of
you have a lot of pieces in place to be
very good. What do they do with John Gibson? I
don't know. They have Dostaal, They have some really good
back end pieces that are coming coming along nicely. So yeah,
this is a if I'm a coach who's trying to
stay out of the limelight after everything that happened Chicago,
(19:01):
it's a good place to go less media on the
West Coast, you know. I think if he went to
the Rangers, I don't know if that would have been
the best fit, and that with under that much scrutiny,
I think it's kind of like he's just gonna kind
of wade his way back in and it's a good
division to go into because I think it's if you
see by this playoffs alone, like the Central is an
absolute monster in the Pacific, is pretty evenly matched with LA,
(19:23):
with Edmonton, and with Vegas, it's very evenly matched. So
it's it's there's room for somebody to kind of grab
the reins and make a playoff push.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Here.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Tal clearly you're in favor of this move because not
only does you a documentary on the Whalers, but you
and Quimball have also been fond of a little lipsweater.
I mean, you guys probably have mustaches for twenty years now.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
Well, I think coach Q is clearly a first ballot
mustache Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
There's nothing denying that.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Great you know, great fit. I love the Whalers connection.
Speaker 6 (19:52):
There's already been speculation that he might bring in either
Dnen or Elf Samuelson as an assistant.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
God, I'd love for him to.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Bring in both so that we got four former Whalers
on the team.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
But yeah, it's a great fit. This this year is perfect.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
He'll just get everything set for next year, like you
know this year coming up, it'll set them up for
the year after. This is just going to be the
pre and then then everything will ramp up for this team.
They're probably you heard it here first. I think they'll
move Zegres this offseason.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Wow, that's a poll take.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
I think they'll make a swing.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Thomas Siki's going to join us.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
His thoughts on what has transpired so far in the
NHL playoffs and the Leaves actually make a deep run,
can the Jets figure things out? Plus his own memories,
the greatest hit of his career, the greatest goal of
his career. Thomas Siki's up next after this y'ar an
NHL inscripted Our next guest was drafted fourth overall by
(20:51):
the Los Angeles Kings the two thousand and seven NHL Draft.
He played four hundred and fifty six career NHL games,
all with the New York Islanders. He's a beloved colleague
of ours. Couldn't be here to better time with Ales
fans buzzing right now with the number one overall pick.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Of course, you know me, love the NHL.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Network, Amazon Prime and is working MSG A good friend
of the program.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Thomas Hickey. Ladies and gentlemen, hecks, how are you, buddy?
Speaker 5 (21:13):
I'm great, boys and a what a treat. The three
of us have never been on together, but getting to
know both of you guys separately. Some of the highest
energy and best people to work with. Love listening to
the podcast and it's fun to be on boys.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
So thanks for having me the endorsement.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Yeah yeah, big big fan of the show. Yeah subscriber, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Well, you know what the buzz is like in the
New York area around the Knicks Nick Celtics.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
So far, the three games have been great.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Road teams won every game normally, want to mention buzzer beat.
I'm talking about basketball, but no oilers. And the Vegas
Golden Knights, the road team has won all three games
there and Vegas wins game through in a buzzer beater
own goal by Leon Dry Suttle Hicks. And all your
time in hockey, have you ever seen something like that happen?
Speaker 5 (21:56):
I don't think. I mean you've seen those, you see
him often, and maybe it happens in the regular season
with like one second laughter is the pucks crossing the
line at the end of a period. But we're talking
about the stakes of the second round of the Stanley
Cup playoffs, and I couldn't believe it, and I Obviously
it was a late one, so I wasn't watching it live,
and I was going through the highlights, and I'm like
(22:17):
seeing that last clip, going, okay, there's four seconds off,
Vegas wins this in regulation, how and then you see
it pop out like that, and you know, sort of
like reminiscent of the Patrick camee, Like no one really
knows if it's in, but Riley Smith's like I had
the best view that clearly hit the netcam and came
out and I'm pretty sure it was under the under
the buzzer. So just just wild, especially after Edmonton tied
(22:39):
it up. It would be, uh, would have been quite
the place to be last night at Edmonton with with
the buzz of that crowd before the game started.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Stars Jets right now, Hicks, You and I made four
glorious trips to Winnipeg, so clearly we're in favor of
the I.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
Was and I got there six five times this year. Total.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Favorite restaurant there a.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
Little place called Arles heard about.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Why yeah, Canadian Staple.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
We're recording this in Sunday morning, so we're not sure
what's gonna happen in Game four. The Leaves and Panthers
but this series so far, Hicks has been a whale
of a series. Marshan scores his fourth overtime playoff goal,
tying in for seventh most in hockey history.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
Just when it looked like perhaps the Leafs would take a.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Three oh stranglehold, Florida's showed a lot of perseverance and
resilience to come back and win him John Taver's former
colleague years friend back to you guys put juniors together.
How about the way Johnny T's playing a couple of
goals there in Game three.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
It's unbelievable with Johnny, And I mean this year, all
the talk, you know, especially him giving up the captaincy,
I had a feeling it might make things a little
bit lighter on him. And that's sort of strange for
me to say, because when you do know Johnny, you
know that nothing really affects him. He just approaches every
day the exact same way. But he had a phenomenal
(23:49):
regular season and I'm not surprised he's getting it done
in crunch time, because even though you know, we didn't
have a ton of success as teammates in the playoffs,
we did make some big strides in recent islander history,
and he was always right at the center of it.
Was the focal point. You know. When I watch him
play and we can talk about goals, assist all that.
(24:12):
When there's a loose puck on the ice, whether it's
a fifty to fifty and he's with somebody or that
pucks up for grabs and it's a foot race, he
comes up with it every single time. And to me,
it's like it's sort of defensive hockey, whatever you want
to call it. It's just hunger. The hunger that he
plays with. He was like that way in practice every
(24:32):
single day. The drill didn't stop. The drill stopped for
everyone else. When it was like, you know, a one
on one down the ice, Okay, someone shoots the puck,
goalie saves, it, goes into the corner. It's like next
rep with him, I'm hunting that puck down until I
hear a whistle every single time. And I think that
was just the way he was brought up. And even
as he gets to the backside of his career, you know,
(24:53):
he's thirty five years old now, that never strays away.
And honestly, I think the strength that you get maybe
is being a little bit older a little bit wiser.
It's even a better part of his game than it
was before. So I'm not surprised to see the success
that he's having, but really happy for him. And honestly,
leafs wise And we were in there a bunch this
(25:15):
year seeing Toronto play, and you know, I actually believe
in that team. And we're talking about the Florida Panthers
that I think they're going to be the hardest out
in the playoffs, whether it's Toronto that takes them down
or whether it's someone else that tries to. I think
Toronto's able to do it. I'm like, when I did
my bracket, I had Toronto go to the final, which
(25:36):
is felt. It felt.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Now's your bracket looking though, right now, how's your bracket?
Speaker 5 (25:42):
Look at Dallas and Toronto in the final, Dallas winning.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
It talk about just your transition, you know, going to
you from from hockey to broadcasting and how how quick
it was and how seamless. We kind of have a
little bit of the same story we both ended and
it was just kind of like, oh, let's just try this,
and was it something that you wanted to do or
is it just something that kind of presented it off
and you're like, oh shit, I'm pretty good at this.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
It's it sort of presented itself. I was my contract
with the Islanders was up. I was looking to still play,
and someone from the PR, kimber auerback the Islanders PR,
approached me and was like, hey, MSG might have a
vacancy and they're looking for an analyst. And I was like, oh, cool,
maybe someday I'll be interested, Like I didn't really think twice.
(26:30):
I was like, I was like, yeah, well I'm playing,
and like I didn't. I didn't really give it thought.
And I was like, maybe that job will be there
in like two years when I'm when I'm done playing.
And I went to a on a PTO to New
Jersey got cut and then I was like, and I
remember telling my wife about that, like oh there could
be an analysting, Oh that's cool. Then I got cut
and we're like, I'll just pick up the phone and ask,
(26:51):
like maybe that's something I'll like, I haven't thought about it.
I didn't think about it when I was a player.
I'm not really sure why. And I picked up the
phone and sort of like I was like, just give me,
give me a chance, give me a shot, give me,
give me one audition and I'll see if I like it.
Maybe I'm good, maybe I'm not. I think it's one
of those things that you don't know until you try it,
(27:12):
and it's it's pretty complicated. It's it's it's a challenge.
But I sort of fell in love with that right away,
that it was just something that's that's challenging, but at
the same time, it's like playing. It's a passion and
you love to do it. And I fell in love
with it right away.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
You've been an asset not only for NHL never cam
Azon Pume, but also as you mentioned, the Islanders and
MSG speaking of those aisles. Normally, I thought it more
with thecubilation, number ten to number one, three point five
percent chance get the number one overall, pick Hicks and
your guys come through again. I understand this isn't a
draft with a celebrating type or a badard type, but
Hagen Shaefer, there's big names out there to.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Go from a.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
I'm so thrilled and like it was. I was so
on my couch and i was like having a non
hockey night after a long season. I'm like, Okay, I
owe this to my wife, not to be watching hockey
all night, and my group texts for my MSG crew
started filling up and there was like a screenshot of
Islanders at one and then everyone else. And I was like, oh,
(28:17):
it's a gag, Like I'm sure someone could, but they
ran a simulation. They probably ran a million of them,
and like, oh, that was one of them, someone's screenshot
and it got out and I was like, oh whatever.
Then like my phone keeps blowing up and I'm like,
wait a minute. I went looked. I couldn't believe it.
I still can't. It's good fortune, stroke of luck. But
(28:38):
what I will say, like and Jay, like you're there
in San Jose, You've got to be awful. Sorry, I
should rephrase that, you've got to be really bad and
completely tearing it down to maybe get the chance to
get a first overall pick. Maybe they're all going to
be Maybe some of them will be mac when celebrating,
Maybe some of them will be Nico Hescher. It doesn't
(29:00):
really matter. You have the first pick. You have the
best asset of the year in your hands, and it's
free and you didn't have to suffer to get it.
And that's what the Islanders are dealing with in it.
You know, I'm not saying you pick a kid first
overall and all of a sudden you're gonna be you know,
you're now a team to beat for the next ten years.
That's not how it works. But it gives you this
(29:22):
foundational building block that you can add to and build around,
especially when you haven't already torn it down. Like so,
they're so lucky. And as far as the picks the
players to pick, I've got no idea because I don't
watch junior hockey. I've seen clips on these top guys
they're talking about. I can't even comment there. I mean,
I think you really got to comb through it. But
(29:43):
it's really unique too because this first pick, it's like Schaefer,
who sounds like an absolute studd and I saw him
play at World Juniors, played like seventeen games of hockey
last year. So you really got to be thorough and
have a plan for whoever you pick. But it's an
asset however you use it, that just extremely fortunate for
them to get.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
I want you to take us through your memorable overtime
goal in twenty sixteen versus Florida and the playoffs. Walk
us through it that night, the locker room afterwards the celebration,
which wasn't my favorite, but I loved you coming down
the middle of the well.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
It was like it looked a little rushed, but it
was exciting. Here's the thing, it's it was fun to
see you.
Speaker 4 (30:24):
Who's somebody that you know, you know, I've I've played
against you and then I met you and you're very
stoic and I tried to get you to laugh with
with JD. Love, I got a little chuckle, but that
was like you were elated. So it's pretty cool. But
but yeah, it just take us through that night and that.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
Goal well with JD Love too, I was I had
a lot of emotions going through. Man, it just it
just came off as a little chuckle, but it meant
a lot. That was blackout state. That was complete blackout state.
You know that that year, particularly in playoffs like that
was probably the best hockey I'd ever played, just you know,
(31:00):
for like three four week stretch and I think you're
iNTS just come come out of you when you're at
the top of your game, and there was you know,
it was a long shift, and it's a long change
in overtime and and it was you know, It was
cool looking back too, because it was like the armor
Yager was covering me and like he he thought the
(31:21):
puck was going to go up the wall and his
quick turnover. I just happened to be in the right
spot and brock Nelson made like such a sneaky, little
understated pass between the sea of the defenseman and like
I had no time, I was coming in and just
I don't know if I've ever really done that in
a regular season game where I'm like, oh, I'm on
the point, I'm just gonna sprint down to the slot
(31:43):
area and get something. But like I said, it was
just sort of instinctual, sort of got it off as
quick as I could, didn't really aim and beat the goalie.
And those are those are those moments that will live
with you forever. And I remember after that game, I
had like my my family was there. It was such
a big moment. I had like the biggest headache from
guys tapping me on the head after that, and then
(32:03):
the rush of adrenaline. I remember waking up the next day.
I was like felt like I got hit by a bus,
just because as a defenseman that didn't score a ton
of goals. It was like it just takes over you.
So that was that was one memory that will stick
with me for the rest of my life. That feeling
after and now when I'm watching guys like, you know,
(32:25):
Riley Smith scored a big goal last night. He's scored
many big ones. But I'm like, it's cool they get
they get to feel that, and maybe not as important
if they do it more often. But I love I
love watching overtime because I love seeing an unlikely hero
and just sort of thinking to myself, Wow, they get
to experience that for about twenty four hours. It's really cool.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Well we're doing memory Lane with Hicks. How about you
had on Jonathan Drew in the best of your career? Amazing?
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Oh yeah, that one he he was freshly out of junior.
I think it was his second year. It might have
been his rookie year. Another one of those things. It
was sort of like a little bit of a gamble
I had was Haylock Posa was you know, I knew
if I got beat inside that someone was there, Like
I wasn't gonna end up on the highlight reel because
(33:11):
I had someone back, and uh, it was like it
was like running into a bag of pillows that someone
just stacks and and you're you're sort of going full
speed and then that thing's coming in and it just
like I didn't feel anything at all. And I mean
the thing I say this one like last laugh goes
to Jonathan Duranne because he went to the quiet room
(33:32):
for not just the rest of the period, like a
period and a half. Then all of a sudden, they
open up the gate and outcomes Druanne. We're all like,
how was this guy? How was this guy? Back in
the game? He was unbelievable and they ended up beating
us that game and he was a big part of it,
so full full credit to him. But uh, yeah, that one,
that one felt good. I wish it was I wish
(33:53):
it was someone I really despised because I got nothing
against him at all, But there's not. There's not too
many people in my completely despised lest anyways, so uh,
I guess it had to be him.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
Well, I mean, another guy I think it was that
series too, that's probably in your despised list that he
worked with is Brian Boyle because he threw it absolutely here, Yeah,
which is one of the dirtiest plays I've seen.
Speaker 5 (34:17):
If I tried to. If I tried to go through
Boiler with that hit, it probably I probably just would
have winded myself. So I guess it couldn't have been him.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
Loul Leverarella no longer the Alanders, But I'm sure you
got stories for days X he treated you well and
clearly is a Hall of Famer hockey legend.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Favorite Lou story for.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
Me, Yeah, one one that always sticks out. It was
just sort of funny. It was, uh so Lou had
just got hired. He came in and live. I live
on the island in the summer, so like me, it
was me, cal Qluatterbuck and someone else. And we're just
sitting in the lounge after we worked out. We're we're
eating lunch and Lou comes in and like Lou's always
(34:58):
popping in and out. Uh, he's sort of everywhere. He's
he's moving around all day and he's you know, he's
he's poking in everywhere because he's got a great feel
for what's going on, not just at the top, like
on every single level. And he pops in and he
looks at me and he goes, I was wearing number
fourteen at the time, and he goes, what do you
think of your number? And in my head, I'm like,
(35:19):
is he talking about my phone number? Like I got
an area I got a Seattle washing the area code.
Like like what He's like fourteen? What do you think
your number? And I'm like, oh, I love fourteen. Yeah,
I've worn it since I got here. Really good for me, Yeah,
it's great. Like I didn't know where he was going.
I'm just like caught off guard. And he's like, I
want to change your number. I want you in a
lower number. I'm putting you in four. And I'm like, yeah, yeah,
(35:43):
that was great. And Lou walks out and clutter looks
at me. He goes, you really bitched out there, and
I was like, yeah, I don't know. I didn't know
what to say. And then I was number four after that,
But uh, that one sticks out to me, and that's,
you know, that's sort of Lou. You he's got a plan,
he's got he wants things to that he likes him
(36:06):
in the way that he's done it. And that was
an example of you just go sure whatever you want Boston,
if you if you do what he wants you to
do in the end, when uh, you know, when you
need something he's going to be the guy that you
turn to. So I didn't have a strong rebuttal I
wish I kept fourteen, but uh, that's that. That's my story.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
Listen.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
And I mean one thing that lou does love as
well as facial hair, and he has this weird knack
for cleanliness. You know, if you were to pick one
guy in that team that had took the deepest exhale
and was like, finally I can fucking grow a beard
and grow my hair out, who do you think it
would be?
Speaker 5 (36:46):
There's a good there's a good little list a clutter
Cal Clutterbuck. You know, since he retired then he was
he's working with us with msg full beard. He's got
it back right away. He would be one. I mean
a couple other guys stand out, like nick Letty got
traded from us, But just when you look at the
side by side of nick Letty with beard, nick Letty
(37:07):
with out, it's like, oh man, what was it someone?
I think it was. It was one of the first
days of training camp, I think, and someone came in.
You know, when you've got like fifty guys in camp
and you don't know who's who. And LEDs always has
this beard. It defines him. You look at him now,
great beard always has it. And someone came in and
(37:27):
like shook his hand, being like hey, hey, I'm Adnan,
nice to meet you, and it was like one of
his teammates. The guy didn't recognize him because he didn't
because he didn't have a beard. I got. I got
to try to remember who it was. So lads is
definitely one I think for for guys like Kyle Polmer
that could grow a beard in like five hours, it
might be a little bit of a relief not to
not to have to do it every single day. But yeah,
(37:49):
there's there's certainly guys that will will feel freed up
from that.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
All right.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
Two more from me stranger postgame ritual Amazon Prime after
the game John fors and would not eat. He fastened
on game days are the fact I would only drink
pepsi after the games and support of our spot.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
I have to go with foes. I know you love
your your pepsi, I mean fast game day. He doesn't
eat all game day. But the thing that you got
to understand about him, he's like the big busiest man
in hockey. So not only is he not eating all day,
but he was probably up at three thirty or four
o'clock because he needs to be at his the earliest
flight of the day, like three hours early. So he
(38:28):
wakes up, sleeps a couple hours, and then he just
fasts all day, grinds and works and prepares the entire day.
We go, we get to the rink, we'll go for
a meal for his note, I'm heading to the booth.
More prep and then once the game's over, he's just
savoring the tiniest little morsel of food after the game,
and I'm like, how are you doing this? And then
he's got to wake up at like four o'clock the
(38:51):
next morning and fly somewhere because he's probably on a
triple header. I don't know how he does it. It's
the strangest thing, the fact that he's functioning, let alone
being like one of the best, one of the best
in the business. I don't know how he does it,
but it's so bizarre.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Jesus louise I. So he doesn't eat.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
Anything, No, he won't.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
He won't, not even after after the game. He has.
Speaker 5 (39:15):
He'll break his fast after the game, but leading up,
like before the game, he's like, no, I like it.
He like makes me on edge a little bit and
then he's all fired up.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Yeah, oh man, psycho psycho stuff crazy.
Speaker 7 (39:26):
Should ask he's not doing that right jay No, Russo, Russo,
I've never seen.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
I asked him to.
Speaker 4 (39:32):
He'll he'll be eating popcorn, peanuts cot like he eats
about six times and like, I'm like, doesn't that like
bother your like, you know, speaking voice. He's drinking coffee
with like milk at it, and I'm like, he's like,
I'm good. He'd always look over me and just be
like stick with me, kid.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
Last thought was close up with Thomas Sicki on the ice.
You're a high character guy's a teammate. You're a high
character guy, well liked, respected by all. And I think
of the fact you and JD are the same age.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
You've overcome a lot of adversity in your life. It's
one thing to lose a parent, but to also lose
a sibling.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
And you've spoken really eloquently and passionately about losing your
brother but also losing your mom. Today, on Mother's Day,
how about a fond remembrance of not only your brother
but also your mom.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
Yeah, No, I appreciate that. It's first Mother's Day that
you know, can't pick up the phone and call her
for me, so many memories. I think we'll come back
to hockey, though, like she she did not know the
game she watched more. I said this at her at
her funeral for a little bit of levity, but maybe
(40:36):
all of us here tall included, like she's seen as
much hockey as is probably more than ninety nine point
nine percent of people, and probably more than ninety percent
of true hockey fans, because she watched every single game
that I played from a young age, growing up, and
even when I moved into broadcasting, she watched more hockey
than anyone. And I don't think anyone knew less about
(40:58):
hockey than by mom. Like playing and simple, she was
just doing it because she loved me. She met my teammates,
she them, she you know, you're on the team. I
want the team to win. You fall in love with that.
But as far as icing and off side and penalties
disallowed goals, like, she's got no idea. She's just tuning in, uh,
because she loved me and she loved that I loved
(41:20):
the game. And I think that's that's my biggest takeaway,
And I think I got a good laugh when I
said that, because everyone was like, yeah, your mom, she's
she's not. She doesn't know the ins and outs of hockey,
but she's watched more than anyone. So that's what sticks
out to me the most. She she loved it because
I loved it, and that means a lot to me.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Yeah, who cares what icing means as.
Speaker 3 (41:38):
Long as mom lives exactly.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Yeah. Thomas Hecky, you know him, you love me.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
You can hear him and see him on MSG, Amazon
Prime and NHL Network.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
Here was an iron man, by the way.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
On Amazon Prime, you can see what you want about
force and he still did miss a game. Thomas Dick
one single game and now after being the busiest man
in hockey. I don't know what you're doing with yourself.
I've seen you once in the schedule NHL Network.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
I can't imagine.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Have you been spending your days the last month, even
Ashley catching up on shows or TV.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
I don't know what you're doing.
Speaker 5 (42:02):
Yeah, I'm tapped out now. A couple a couple of
shows at the network, going to England this week coming up.
Get away from it all. That's the beauty of it.
You get so wrapped up in it. It's the best.
You love it, you don't want to separate, and the
once you do, you got to recharge the batteries. So
I'm looking forward to that trip. And yes, a lot
of catching up on TV movies and I know, well
(42:25):
we're away, it's we come back. We're gonna be uh,
We're gonna have a full schedule of stuff coming out.
So that's always fun too.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
And tell you're gonna love this. Hicks is such a
fan of Anora like you and me. He didn't down Hicks,
go ahead.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
Yeah I did. We did a full Anora day. My
wife and I were two friends of ours and went
went down Brighton Beach, Coney Island if if you've seen it.
We went to Tatiana's. We had dinner and it turned
into like we were like the only English speaker was
all Russians. And the night actually ended with us going headquarters,
(43:04):
go to headquarters in the city to like relive the
stripper scene of it all, like we had to we
had to touch everything. That was a late night and
a long one, but it was It was really cool.
We loved it. And I never like live in New
York Longa never been to Brighton Beach and it was
like felt like you were in the movie.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
It was.
Speaker 5 (43:22):
It was really cool.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
I'm sick to my stomach.
Speaker 5 (43:26):
And I know you. I know you hate it, JD.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
So I don't.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
I don't hate it.
Speaker 4 (43:30):
I just said, let's call let's call a spade a spade.
It's a it's a soft core porn. It's not true.
Speaker 5 (43:37):
It was, it was, it was excellent.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
It's a great Academy of Orgining film. And Thomas Aiki
is a future award winner as well. Thanks, you're the
best money.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (43:45):
Thanks guys, great talking. See you boys.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 8 (43:52):
Hm.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
Hext one of our favorite guys. Honestly a class act.
He's always found a listen to. Like JD said, and
g doesn't throw flowers less he means. He's an articulate guy.
He's a smart guy. Hicks sees the game. Well, I'm
just blown away by that fact.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
Rusanowski liked me as a snacker, little popcorn, some chips,
doesn't worry but getting stuck in his teeth, that is
one of that man is the Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
I love it. He's got a great larynx like you do.
Speaker 1 (44:17):
Thanks what's the good of tabas sicky. We're gonna get
in some fun stuff here. But Lesner, that's right, A Lesner.
I think we might be doing three stars. Tala wants
you to do three Stars. You might do it anyways.
Some meantime I want to do a little Stenophile in
sixty here and talk about David mammontt. I've been on
the Stavid Manett run because at Glengarry glen Ross I
told you guys about seeing that on Broadway Bob Odenkirk
Tony Ward nominated.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Well, when I went to go see it, there was
a sign there, the good old splash.
Speaker 3 (44:36):
The QR code.
Speaker 1 (44:37):
David Mammont has his first new film in seventeen years.
Be the first to pre order I Said, I'm In
Henry Johnson, which played in Santa Monica, near where Teal
is at least in California.
Speaker 2 (44:46):
It came out in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
Manmittt wrote the play during COVID because he was just
bored out of his mind and shy Lah Buff who's
also a Hollywood outcast.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Right now, say what.
Speaker 1 (44:54):
You will about Shia off the field, so to speak.
There's been allegations of unruly behavior towards women, mesmerizing is
an actor, Mammont's an outcast. Why well in liberal Hollywood,
He's been it very clearly.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
He is as pro Trump as it gets.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
Manmontt Wroten article years ago said why stop being a
brain dead liberal? And even in this latest column of
The Holiday Report, Manman said, Oh I love Trump.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
I think he's great. So what happens. You've got one
guy who's about as.
Speaker 1 (45:16):
New conservative as it gets, one guy allegations of improp
per behavior. Well, hell, we'll just make a movie and
stream it online. All those David Mamont fans and shy
fans will go to Henry Johnson dot com pre order
for eight bucks like I did, or maybe Jason de
Burris's wife will paid ten dollars to watch it. And
I gotta tell you it's a fantastic movie. Now I
hesitate to say this. I'm curious what you Joe will
think because this is essentially a filmed play. It is
(45:38):
three acts, it's four scenes.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
There's no I mean this is you're.
Speaker 1 (45:42):
Watching this, Timids and to go, okay, this clearly is
based on the play. This feels I'm watching, you know,
feels like I'm watching Shakespeare or something, but is such
a gifted writer.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
It's so much fun to listen to his dialogue.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
And I gotta tell you, Shyla buff is nothing short
of mesmerizing. Again, I always think he's been a great actor,
and with Mammitt's words, with that dialogue, you can just
make it sing.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
I mean, it doesn't matter who the actor is.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
And essentially it's you know one thing about Mammon as
you look at his movies, whether it's The Verdict, The Untouchables, Glennarry, Glenross,
American Buffalo, like, Yeah, Wag the Dog is a great movie.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
I mean, his scripts.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
The way that these characters talk is just so much
fun to listen to. And it's always about power somebody.
People use words to get what they want. This review
matter of fact from The Daily Beast. As always, Mammitt's
Pros is a staccato wonder full of stops and starts,
half formed questions and answers and retorts that cause the
chat to double back on itself until things twist into
knots even as the material forges arwared in a rapid clip.
(46:34):
It's an exhilarating dance and Bowers more than up the
challenge of the writer's script, and Chris Bower' is one
of the guys who's in the wire. He's great again, Lebuff,
I don't know what this means for his career, he
says in the Hollward Reporter article, which encurags people to
check out. Hey, I don't care what happens in my life.
I got to work with David Mammont is an all
time great. He's a great writer. I encourage people to
check out Henry Johnson Henry johnsonmovie dot com. If you
want to check it, go ahead to tell. I know
(46:55):
you do find this interesting role. Right, Both these guys
are outcasts. Hey, fine, if nobody likes this, nobody wants it,
we'll just put the movie online.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
Screw it. We don't need to archie for.
Speaker 6 (47:03):
For I mean, regardless of listen, I'm not going to
get into what they've done away from the screen. I
think they're both talented guys. I loved Shi lah Buff
and Peter, but Peanut Butter Falcon.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
If anyone's seeing that, oh nice, such a good movie, mam.
Speaker 6 (47:17):
It is obviously like in the pantheon.
Speaker 2 (47:19):
Yeah, and I say, good for them.
Speaker 6 (47:21):
You know, let's let's put something together ourselves, put it
on ourselves. We'll pocket all the money. We don't have
to go through the studio system. Like I admire the
diy ethos this project.
Speaker 3 (47:32):
You see more of that now though, No.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
Yeah, there's more of that going on in the industry
of do it yourself and and kind of just bet
on yourself and back yourself, I think than ever before.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
No yeah, and I think you didn't see that in
the past, before you needed the studio to.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
Back hit night. Like whatever, I'll make the movie myself.
I'll do it a shoestring budget. Like I said, it's
a film play. We'll put it online. It'll be fabulous.
Henry johnsonmovie dot com. Western Hockey League O wait. Oilers
fans enjoying their current playoffront, perhaps none more than Bayron Munich,
left back and Canadian national team star Edmonton's own Alfonso Davies.
Speaker 2 (48:04):
His celebrations have been great. People are talking about this.
Speaker 1 (48:06):
I'm not sure if you're a soccer guy GD, but
all fonds of Davies loving this right now.
Speaker 3 (48:10):
Oh yeah ONMB one one, oh come here.
Speaker 8 (48:12):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, that's a go that's a golasso.
Speaker 2 (48:16):
That's a golasso, bron.
Speaker 9 (48:18):
I didn't know you had it like this. Yeah, man, are.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Doing doing doing doing rubbish rubbish?
Speaker 9 (48:23):
Boh get night, get about it in cornhi coror do
his thing.
Speaker 8 (48:28):
Look at this inside play take that inside outside? Watch out,
lottle guy.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
You you where you.
Speaker 8 (48:33):
Going pasta finished?
Speaker 3 (48:34):
That? That is simple hockey right there? Where are you
going inside?
Speaker 8 (48:39):
Outside?
Speaker 5 (48:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (48:40):
Moving feet, moving feet, don't trip me. It's gonna be
a foul o you whie sliding? Give me that easy.
David is too good man.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
Huh yeah, I mean, I'm I'm I'm gonna. I'm gonna
have fonds of Davies fan. I haven't checked in a
ton on this, but you know, listen, that's why we
do research before.
Speaker 2 (49:05):
Uh your thoughts, okay, tell you put the notes you
don't check out right now?
Speaker 1 (49:10):
I'm checking should live check it out, and then gave
his reaction while I t up the next strike. God
you watch it like Western Hockey League officially unnoticed. Duke
Lesnar selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the fifth
round the WHL Prospects Draft. The fourteen year old is
the sun, a former w w E and UFC champion.
Brock Lesnar and wait for it, former w w F
(49:32):
diva Sable. That's bringing back memories.
Speaker 4 (49:35):
Now you're up my alley. Now ww now we're starting
to talk here.
Speaker 1 (49:39):
So this kid, Lesnard played the season for the Notre
Dame Hounds in will Cox, Saskatchewan. And could you imagine
if he's got JD is the nastiness of his old man,
I mean, a Lesner on skates.
Speaker 2 (49:50):
I'm intrigued.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
Oh and Sable, Let's not discount what Sable did in
the WWE.
Speaker 7 (49:56):
Well, I mean she was one of the first Davas
right her. Yeah, but she was like she was, yeah,
she was, she was re finisher. Yeah, she's hell of
a wrestler. Both of them were.
Speaker 4 (50:07):
And they you know, Lesner went on into the also
had a little stint in the UFC. It was champ
was amazing what he did. And and I think, uh,
if he has half of that their son, I mean,
it's going to be a sight to see. By the way, Yeah,
just watch the live reactions. Amazing stuff.
Speaker 3 (50:26):
We love it. I love one, Yeah, I love one. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (50:28):
And again I know all fonds of Davies. I just
I didn't see the live reactions, so you know.
Speaker 1 (50:33):
I I I appreciate your honesty. Many an analysts have
just lied to I'm like, oh, it's great to see.
Speaker 4 (50:38):
I I'll admit I'll be like, hey, listen, I I
miss that in the notes.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
I was.
Speaker 4 (50:43):
I was busy on the peanut butter falcon David Mammott.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
I did like the David peanut butter falcon stuff.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Yeah, that wass He's he's on fire today and that
was that was my That was my bad.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
Guys, are we doing three Stars?
Speaker 2 (50:55):
You want to do with dal? I havena, okay, tell
kick it off? You got sketch the cough tals svetch.
Speaker 6 (51:00):
Sorry, so yeah, no, I was going to go with
with Andre Cough. I know we're kind of I don't
want to spend too much time talking about the Hurricanes,
but they have the they have the pieces.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
We're pissing off every Hurricanes fan listening.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
Listen. They are whalers. Right.
Speaker 6 (51:14):
It's a great market with a great building and one
of the better tailgates in the league.
Speaker 3 (51:18):
I'll say that much.
Speaker 6 (51:19):
But yeah, I mean, such a what's the biggest knock
been on the on the Hurricanes?
Speaker 2 (51:23):
Year after year? They don't know a superstar. They don't
the guy game breaker game.
Speaker 3 (51:27):
They can't score.
Speaker 6 (51:28):
The offense dries up every year in the postseason, and
now they're starting. They've been getting some depths scoring, But
the most important piece, listen, they don't have the superstar
in Rattinan. Can sveetch Nikoff give you sixty to seventy
percent of what Rattinan's giving the Stars. You know, the
most goals he ever scored in the postseason before these
playoffs was four. He already has six and eight games.
(51:50):
The Hurricanes are four and oh when he scores this postseason.
And again for a team whose biggest issue year after
year in the playoffs is scoring, if he can maintain
this pace, that's a huge, huge piece for a team
that just traded a huge superstar that is now putting
up Gretzky numbers in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (52:08):
Well said Jenny, your pick for Star of the week.
Speaker 4 (52:11):
I'm gonna give it just based off of last game.
But listen, Dallas Stars, We're gonna go there. Okay, Mira
no no I listen. We talked about random enough. I
got to give some flowers to a d man, Thomas Harley.
Thomas Harley coming in this season, what he's done with
Miro Hayskin and injured is is a sight to behold.
(52:34):
He's really developed into a superstar on the back end
and and a true I think at number one d man. Now,
when Hayskin comes back, he's probably gonna get a little
bit less ice, but he's proven that he controlder the
load for this team and Amy a golden assist last game,
and I just think he's really really it's it's it's
just a testament to what Jim Nil and the Dallas
(52:55):
Stars have done with developing his young talents. And I
just think he's he's just been fantastic. He's playing the
most minutes out of anybody per night on the back end,
and I think on the team and it's just, yeah,
he's my h He's my sta Thomas Harley.
Speaker 1 (53:09):
It's a great pick. I have a buddy mine who's
casual hockey. Fanny's not huge, but obviously the national love
he watches it. And when he was watching Four Nations,
he goes, hey, I've been sleeping on this guy.
Speaker 5 (53:17):
Who is he?
Speaker 1 (53:17):
I said, well, I don't think you're alone in that.
I don't think a lot of Thomas Harley's not a
household name. Yeah, but he is going to be now,
and you're right. He played great at Four Nations and
it's great to see him come into his own because
he's really been a blossoming star.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
Good on you to give someone some love.
Speaker 1 (53:28):
I'll go to Bobrovski pitches a shut up for the
Pantasy game they had to win.
Speaker 2 (53:32):
Bob stops twenty three shots. I'm with him. The Rley
Smith call great for Vegas.
Speaker 3 (53:35):
Oh, I thought, yeah, we had Riley Smith too.
Speaker 1 (53:37):
Yeah, but I'll go with Bob. Panthers are back in
the series. It's now best of three as a series
shift to Toronto.
Speaker 2 (53:42):
This was a ton of fun. Thanks checking a selling
scripted What number is this for us? Tell? I feel
