After a break following the Stanley Cup Final, Jason Demers and Adnan Virk reunite to go over the winners and losers of free agency so far, with major kuddos being awarded to the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights. The guys also take a moment to look back at the recent NHL Draft and how the Boston Bruins got a great pick in James Hagens before immediately fumbling free agency. (00:24):
You thought we were dundant You back from the dead.
It is Verkin Demurz back from the break. We've got
just an avalanche of material to get to here with
all the information that's happened in terms of the draft
free agency. We're coming at you fast and furious, and
it's just going to be back with the team has
been reunited once again.

Speaker 2 (00:41):

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Gonna be out to Sedona shortly so looking and just
rip and ride here. But I love the fact you
will be talking a little sit about today, the little
f one little I am.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I am, look at me jumping in. Well have you
seen yet?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
I'm not seen it yet? No.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Wow. Typically, everybody I talked to that knows you is
like you are single handedly keeping the movie theater system
alive because ebody else.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Wait tilS doing to go to the ticket there's verke.
I'll pay the fourteen fifty Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, you'll pay you pay, you buy six tickets and
just just to keep it afloat. Hey go to movie theaters, folks,
stop sitting at home.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
I look forward to JD's thoughts. Hans zimmer spoiler.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Alert, Yeah he did that one, Zimmerman. I can't wait.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Let's get to it. Man, There's there's just so much
shit to get to. I don't know how to get
through this. It's a lot of time. I'm good, buddy good.
I pulled up surprise birthday for my wife for fortieth
birthday parties. We'd be the last week meet. My sister
in law pulled it off, so it was good. That
was my main stress the last time since the last
saw you. I know if you've ever done a surprise
party for jail, But my wife can sniff those out
pretty good, and she kind of had the ink should
have anything the surprise. But when I said let's go

(01:43):
for lunch, she's like, well, what's he doing at dinner?
Clearly he's not just gonna let anything happen. So we
did the lunch and I had to give one of
my house key to one of her friends the night before,
so that it was very odd. The night before I
couldn't get in the house, thankfully to wailness that makes
you open the door for music, yep. And then of
course the alarm. I was terrified. That's why I thought
was gonna happen. I thought her friends would get in
the house with my house key and then forget the alarm,

(02:04):
colding you miss attacks. Also, my wife's just gonna get messaged.
Wiseman in the house. Lock hold on, dude. We pulled
it off.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
It was great. Uh is you don't know about my wife?
She is aloof to all things. Surprise surprise. Oh. She
She had no idea And I fumbled the bag for
our engagement probably six times, and she had no idea
that I was proposing to her. And in Egypt, I
almost got detained by Egyptian guard at the Pyramids of

(02:31):
Giza because I was bringing metal through the metal detector,
which is the ring, and I had to like. She's like,
what's going on? And I'm like and I'm like kind
of talking to these Egyptian guys being like, hey, it's
like her ring, and they're like, oh, congrats, congrats. So
they're giving her this one and she's like so they're
yelling at her like hey, congrats, and she's like, what's
going on right now? I'm like, I don't know, honey.
They're just saying congrats. For us visiting the Pyramids. She's like, oh,

(02:53):
that's cool, and then she and all our friends are
like calling bullshit on her, like how did you not know?
Because of the morning I woke up. I was like,
make sure you like dress nice today. She's like, are
you fucking kidding me? Right now? I was like, sure,
you dressed nice, don't dress in sweats or anything. Most
most times the girl knowing that time, but my wife oblivious.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
I want to hear more about Kyro. I'd love to
go to Egypt one day. I love that.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You. Yeah, go to Egypt, not Cairo. It's crazy.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Go to Egypt, not Cairo.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Well, Cairo, it's it's wild. It's wild, and I never
see traffic like that in my life, and it's crazy.
It's uh, it's basically New York City during gridlock, but
all day, every day.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Okay, that sounds Awful'm never New York, New Jersey. Oh jesus, Yeah,
the Lincoln Tunnel, that's what it's like.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Okay, yeah, it's like it's like the Lincoln Tunnel.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
That's but it's a lot dustier, awful and tallet's include
you how things been. You got a little ghetaway as well.
You also went to Arizona, well, Scott Stale Action for
the Pinchevskis. That was a few weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
My kid was off school and then we had a
couple of days where he basically had nothing to do.
So my wife's originally from Arizona. We went there for
a few days. It was super hot, triple digits fahrenheit,
but nice.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
We had a pool.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
It was just nice to get away from the cite
for a little while.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
You were up in Juno, you cause do nature walks
in June on a cruise.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
From an Alaskan cruise while we were off So that
was beautiful, actually, oh.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Man Alaskan cruise.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, nice, very nice. That's pretty cool. Watch it was.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
It was cold, it.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Was actually, you know, pretty chilly for June. And we
enjoyed it. A kind of a family Alaska get away.
Uh saw a bunch of nature. We were we were
all one with nature.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
It was.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
It was very pertant.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
We liked it.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Would you recommend an Alaskan cruise.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, I would. I would definitely.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I mean, even if you're not necessarily a cruise person
per se, just getting that far away and being that isolated,
that away from it all and being around just gorgeous,
just you know, wildlife and mountains and all that.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
It was nice.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And then we stopped in these small towns where literally,
like the whole downtown was a block and it was
all kind of these little you know, but it was charming.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
It was charming. We liked it. Get Away Captain A
have here going.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
From now on Telvino's Captain, ahb.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
He's just just seeking some whale blubber in the middle
of May.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I love Adams, middle of May.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
I love that say.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
I like unique trips all right, onto hockey.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
On the Hockey July first is coming gone to Canada Day.
But in terms of free agency, the Florida Panthers, the
cat came back. You win the title. Jay, Let's just
bring it out. Let's run that baby back. Brad Marshan
six year extension, Sam Bennett eight year extension, Aaron ackbladd
a year extension. Unbelievable. They bring back Thomas no Chick
on a one year deal. So Barkie Kachuk, Reinhart, Bennett

(05:45):
for Hagey Marshaan Lindell Atblad, Seth Jones, Gustav Forsling signed
through twenty thirty. I remember no shred Demurz. Your prediction
had been ac Blad would walk. You did see they
get Bennet eight years and Marsha and you're like, maybe
four years he might go join McKinnon and Colorado, maybe
goes Pittsburgh, Crosby, maybe Toronto. Your reaction to the fact
Bill's you know, goes, no, give me, I.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Give this guy the GM of the Year award. Now
the three peat is very much alive and well they
also bring in Jeff Petrie on the back end, so
they do another you know, one year league minimum to
a dmon that's kind of a little bit older, a
little bit aging, looking for a place to go. I
it's crazy that, you know, you there's not enough credit
that goes to the culture of this group of guys

(06:29):
within that locker room because they it's hard to put
your money where your mouth is and say, hey, we
all want to kumbaya, stay together. We have a great team.
And then as soon as free agency starts and you
starts seeing the dollars fly in, you go, you know
what I'm gonna do. It's best for my family. But
the fact that they're able to marry the two and
this team as a whole loves each other this much.
And you hear them keep talking about the group chats,

(06:52):
you know, and every team is a group chat. But
these guys are putting their money where their mouth is.
They're taking discounts. Taxes are no taxes. I don't that's
such a that's such an easy, easy thing for other
fans and other teams to kind of pick at and
nitpick at. Was that well the taxes in Florida. I mean, like, listen,
for all these guys to decide to stay there, it's
it's just a testament to what they've built. And listen,

(07:15):
can I blame them? They're staying in South Florida. They
have a winning team, great locker room there, they take
a golf cart to practice, Yeah they have. It's the
best place to probably play in the NHL bar and
a few others. But this is this is just the
gold standard being there. So they have all those things
on top of favorable state income taxes. But you know,
Florida will get you somewhere else with property tax or

(07:36):
the strip clubs anything, so they'll get you where ever
they need to go.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
But good point on the Rippers getting you the rippers
will get you there. But the dollar tax all the time,
always it's.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Crazy nuts, it's goddamn wild West out there wild but
but no, it's it's very much like I'll say, I'll
just keep harping on that. It's a credit to that
team and that group of guys and that leadership group
making guys buy in and Bill's I mean, so much
credit goes to him what he's built there and in

(08:08):
the short time he's been there. And I mean, as
this is the team to beat in the East right now,
barring any injuries, this is the Saint You're running it back.
This was categorically the best team in the playoffs last year.
And with all these injuries, they're gonna be healthy. We'll
see how they do. But I man o manner, they
fucking unbelievable again.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Crazy amazing to think that they could be a three
pet after being a wagon. Meantime, the team that they
beat the Oilers, Oh no, breaking up, Scory Perry's signing
with the LA Kings, Connor Brown to New Jersey, John
klingbroog San Jose, Victor Arbinson, Triad to Boston. They bring
back Bousch, Evan Bouchyard and Casperry Kappaanan, but it feels
like jad Edmonton's taking a step back. I still don't
know who their goalie is going to because we and

(08:49):
I both said they need an upgrade not just for
Skinner but along with Skinner all respect to Calvin Pickard.
And we still don't know about Connor McDavid potentially signing
extension could be a lame duck heer and his final
year of his deal.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Your thoughts on the Oilers, Yeah, I mean, I'm sure
they they took some swings at guys, but they just
don't have enough. They had to get rid of some cap.
They're in a little bit of trouble from the years
past and just goes to show you, you know, man,
those you keep looking back and I know they were
in the finals two years in a row, and you

(09:21):
know they lost in six, but it just didn't feel
like they were. Man, they just didn't feel like they
were They were good enough number one, but they haven't
gotten any better. I know they're trying to get this
Isaac Coward. He's supposed to becoming this young kid there.
Apparently it's all but done, but they're waiting to announce
it or they're waiting for the pick to go through.
But he's supposed to be a guy that could potentially help.

(09:42):
You know, Nikolai Eilers is still out there as we're
recording this right now. If he's the last, they might
sign and the next day.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
But oh, there's just sign men and Critisal Zarre. I don't
know though that as much fun.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
I mean, there's bottom six, and you know, Manjiapane, I
was hoping they'd go after like a Christian de Vorak.
I was hoping they you know, there's talks that Adam
Henriq was gonna get traded. They have a lot to do,
they have a lot to work on. I think they
might be doing kind of what Colorado did last year
and be a mid season retool. They'll just wait till
the season starts because they know Connor and Leon will
they'll win him enough games. But man, if I'm Connor,

(10:18):
and you know, you have that very very honest conversation
with everybody about where he stands, and I thought he
was very well spoken with what he was looking for
and wants from this team and how he wants to
be committed. But they got to kind of commit to him.
And I think if I'm him, seeing what happened in
free agency, that's your first indication of where they're trying

(10:40):
to go. And again, listen, there, it's tough to compete
with other teams that were in just better situation cap
wise than Edmonton was, and they had some contracts that
they had to dump. But if i'm him, I'm reiterating
what I've said countless time since the end of the year.
Sign a wanted to year deal and tell them prove
it to me, because him right now to go and
sign a six year deal would be stupid.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, as you'd predicted before. And I think there's a
lot of sense to what you're saying, is that, listen
to your deal thirty five million, you're gonna get a
ton of cash. At least that way, you're not a
lame dock going into the final year, because you imagine
if he does not sign extension all year, the handwringing,
where's McDavid going, whys he signed, blah blah blah. So hey, fine,
here's your one er, two year deal. Get a little
more cash. But as far as the team improving, don't
necessarily see it happening in the introim. The biggest shock,

(11:23):
No golfers, exactly, go get a goalie. Gelp Skinner up.
Biggest shock with that question, Brockbesser, when I saw a
seven year deal fifty points, seventy five million dollar extension
of Wowsers, the Canucks also paying a ton to Thatcher
demco our buddy Connor Garl and we're totally on board
with that. But this was interesting in terms of a
team which did not perform well last season cluarly they

(11:44):
were under achievers. Rather than mess with the core, they
essentially doubled down and said, these are our guys. We
believe it will be better. Besser had a forty goal
season couple years ago. Last year slept to twenty five
goals fifty points. He was still one of the better
players on the team, so clearly they're invested in him.
But to me, of all the moves, I did not
see seven years, fifty million going to Brock Beser. You.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
I mean, it was kind of last minute, and you know,
it's one of those things I think he was talking about.
It was a phone call that happened in the final
hour that allowed this to happen. And I mean, listen,
good on Vancouver getting it done. I think letting him
leave would have been a big mistake. And now that
he's back, I mean, this team's actually not in that
bad of a situation that people think, you know, I

(12:25):
vander Kine. The first year he's on any team is
always the best year, So I think they're gonna get
the most out of him. They dealt with a lot
of injuries last year. And you know, if you look
back two years ago when they you know, almost beat
Edmonton in the in the playoffs, I mean, everything went
right for them that year, and last year everything went
wrong and it's just one of those things. Now hopefully
they can find some balance. Dakota Joshua'll be back healthy.

(12:48):
You know, you bring back Connor Garland's a big piece,
Elias Petterson with a new coach, no JT. Miller. How
is Adam Foock going to be able to get him
back playing the way he can do. I think this
team's a playoff team, bubble team maybe, But I I
think like the Anaheim Ducks or I have them ahead
in the Pacific right now. I got the Ducks cruising

(13:10):
right now, cruising USA. But yeah, I think they're gonna
be better. But time will tell. It's an interesting one,
so we'll.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Get to the Ducks in just a second. Of course,
John Gibson they made that move going to Detroit for
Peter Murrazak and picks Michael Granlin signing with Anaheim as well.
But of course the Vegas phrasing out there is Mitch
Marner rights get traded by the Leafs to Vegas, and
then he signs an eight year, ninety six million dollar
contract with the Golden Knights. It's fascinting we think about
because everyone's going to opinion on it. He's a hundred
point player, is an elite defensive forward, but it's points

(13:41):
per game point nine zero the playoffs one one three
in the regular season, a lot of leaf grumbling. There's
a couple of facts. So I think the bottom line
is this though JD. He's a really good player. He'll
make Vegas a lot better and the Leaves are clearly
not as good without him, so they do sign Matthew
nine six year extension. Petranzl's career might be over steps
away from the Golden Knights, who attend to numerous injuries,
but Vegas got to do. Like there's only so many

(14:02):
studs out there. Everyone knew Marner was the best player
available and they got period.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Yeah, I think Vegas looks good. They look really good
right now. I think Marner is gonna add a lot
to that team. He's gonna add some speed, he's gonna
add some penalty killing, some offense. He's gonna be a
good compliment to Jack Eichel. I think they're really gonna
make some magic together. I'm gonna be interested to see
who's gonna be the shooter on that line, but you know,
hopefully it is Jack, but they're they're gonna have to

(14:27):
put somebody in, and I think they're gonna put a
Dori Fiev on that side. Guy they can finish. And
he's probably gonna be the byproduct of that is him
gonna be scoring forty to fifty goals next year potentially,
so he can have a big year. So yeah, I listen,
he's gonna get his ass boot when he goes back
to Toronto. I think nothing against you know, we said
it at the end of that round against Toronto and

(14:50):
Florida where we said this, they just that core four
couldn't get it done and you got to pull the trigger.
They pulled it too late. I think but they have
to pull the trigger. And our prediction was that the
only way John Tavaris would stay in toronto's taking a
hometown discount, improving that he's a leader, and he did that,
so congratulations to him. And Mitch Marner was going to

(15:10):
be the guy to leave, and he should have left,
and I don't think he should have stayed. I think
the relationship was untenable. I just don't think the fan
base and him had enough trust in each other. And
you could see it. It came to a head last
year and you saw him in the press conference. He's
smile and he's laughing. Have you ever seen that kind
of emotion from him in five years? The last five

(15:33):
years with the Leafs, he just seemed like a weight
was lifted off his shoulder. So I expect him to
have a big year, but I expect Toronto to still
be a solid, you know, a team that's contending for
a playoff spot and can potentially go deep. So this
is gonna be one. It's it's tough to say what's
gonna happen to the Leafs, but I think you know,

(15:55):
the Kneelanders, the Matthews getting Mitch Marner away and he
is a big piece of that team, but it was
a lot of noise there, so I'm gonna be anxious
to see how they kind of handle this and move forward.
But yeah, Vegas is kind of right. The Pacific is
going to be very tough next year right now, And
you know, because you can never discount Edmonton. Just by

(16:17):
the way Connor and Leon play, you got LA's gonna
be good again. They picked up some pieces. I mean,
I think they'll be just okay, but actually yeah, actually
don't love their pickups. But anyway, sorry, and then Anaheim
is going to be great. So I think it's going
to be an interesting little run there in the Pacific,
but Vegas will most certainly be at the top again.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
The other moves you mentioned the fact you're bullish on
the Ducks. So Gibson goes to Detroit, they get rid
of him for Peter Mrazakin picks Michael Grantlin's signing with
the Ducks, big pickup. Yeah, no, adopts and trade to Montreal,
signing an eight year extension with the Habs. Let's talk Anaheim.
You said before paper Beek was going to be aggressive.
He obviously has a big time coach now Joel Quinnville
Anahem looks like they're poison make some moves. You like
the Grandlin pickup.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
I love the Grandlin pickup. I love they're gonna get
Mason McTavish lined up. I think down the middle they're
very solid. Back on treading Trevor Siegers too. By the way,
people get rid of him. He get rid of that cancer.
He's out, so which is great. You get rid of
a guy that didn't necessarily just didn't fit. I thought
getting rid of him was a big, big deal. So
I'm interested to see how that works out for Zegres

(17:20):
and Philly. But I think Joe Quenvill's got the team
that he that he needs, he wants. I'm sure they'll
add some pieces. But you get Lucas Dostall. He gets
the net. Uh, he earned it. He's a great goaltender.
On the back end, they got some veterans that can
hit with the Goddess and the trubas. I know they're
a little bit older, but listen, put putting your toes
in the sand and seeing the sun every day. He'll

(17:41):
keep that body nice and loose. And they got some
They got some really guys. Jackson Lacombe coming up, you
got Carlson. I mean, there's a lot to love for
this team right now, and I do think that they're
going to be very exciting. They're going to play good
brand of hockey, and you know, it's all who's behind
the bench too, And I think Joe Quinn was gonna
get the most out of these guys. But I think

(18:02):
Mikail Grant that was a sneaky big pick up for
this team, and he was at times one of the
for most of that playoffs, one of the best players
for the Dallas Stars. So it's gonna be a big,
big season for Anaheim. And I think Pat Verbeek is
expecting a push for the playoffs and that's my dark
course to make the playoffs. Still, and I mean.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
They had a ton of they had a ton of
cap space, I mean thirty five million going into this,
so they knew they could actually spend a little bit.
Mace mctab's only twenty two years of age, dostals twenty five,
so as far as like young players looking to grow,
and you're right about secrets, it's amazing thinking. But he was,
you know, top three for the Calder and was run
up for the Caulder a couple years ago, but in
the last couple of seasons just fell out of favor
with the coaching staff. Just wasn't feeling it. And he'll
get a chance at least in Philly. Jad he'll be

(18:42):
playing for a contract, So at least that's a good
newer and Philly takes a shot with pailing a couple
of picks. As you said, it wasn't gonna work out
for Anahem, Philly at least takes a flyer on him.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
Oh, I mean, can you imagine Rick Talckett having a
deal with Meetchkoff and Ziegres doing the fucking Michigan and
Jamie Drysdale there too. They're they're they're big, but they're
big buddies.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Now.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
I think it's listen, change. The scenery is good. I
make it ok about, I said, okay answer and degrets. No,
I just think it didn't fit anymore. Yeah, And sometimes
when the fit doesn't work, You know, there are times
in the NHL where the grasses and greener and guys
leave early, and there's times where you need to move
on and you don't realize that. Just taking that exhale
and getting with a new group of guys and a

(19:23):
new coaching staff and just having a fresh start is
enough if you're you know, listen, at one point he
was a very highly touted prospect and a guy that
was poised to potentially be a point per game player.
So for me, it's like he can find that game.
He's just got to, you know, put the work in
and is if he's willing to put the work in,
Rick Talkin will work with him and help him out

(19:46):
in this. You know, Flyers organization will really really really
you know, can turn the corner here and do something
and put a consistencies and together we.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
Do a great job at HL network on research department,
as you know, JD, Lawrence Golds and the whole crew
when they're looking. I was looking at the packet here
the top twenty five potential d targets number one at
least on this.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
List, Jason, Yeah, to Burn's coming back.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yes, well, Brent Burns is third, and you're younger than him,
so why not number one on that list? Last left,
Gavrikov GAVERRIKOFV signs for seven years of the Rangers to
become Adam Fox's running mate. The Rangers did not have
a first round pick. So as far as the draft
is concerned, they run non entity. But Gaverkov signs with them.
What do you make of that move? As I said,
I'll be there paired with fox.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
Well, they brought in some help for Foxy, and that's
what I was saying last year. They needed somebody defensively
that could help them and take a little bit of
the load off. I think they did that, but you know,
they lose. They Tradekeandre Miller. I think it's a great trade.
They got a good return in terms of draft picks
in draft capital, but they I think it's gonna be

(20:49):
a tough sledding year for them more than people think. Well,
I think it's gonna be a difficult year. I think
they lost a lot of pieces. They're gonna be expecting
a lot of young guys to step up. This is
gonna be a very different looking New York Rangers team,
and I think it's gonna take some time now how
Sullivan can put the pieces in place there. And I
think he can very much put the structure that they need.
But I think it's I'm a little nervous. I don't

(21:12):
love the look of this team right now, but I
know I think Drey had to make some decisions and
make some tough decisions on bringing in draft capital and
and maybe getting rid of some of the contracts that
were just a little bit too hanging too heavily. And
he had a big decision to make with ca Andre Miller,
and he makes it. But I think, you know, Carolina,
it's getting a great, a high ceiling player that needs

(21:36):
of again. This seems to be like the summer of
fresh starts, and this is a fresh start for him.
But yeah, I think New York It's gonna be gonna
be tough sled next year.

Speaker 1 (21:43):
Amazing to think about the fact Presidon Trophy team a
couple of years ago, this year a big disappointment, and
you think next year could be tough sledding again before
they kind of work their way up the map. Other
moves here, whatever thoughts you have. As I mentioned, Dobson,
the Habs faccess on the Stars a three year deal,
dadding off with the Devils for a year, Charlie Coyle
traded to Columbus, Jonathan drew In to the Oiler Island
excuse me for a couple of years. JJ Petka to

(22:04):
the man and of those moves that stay out to you.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
No, I mean Peterca. You look at Paterca and the Mammoth,
Josh Jones and Michael Kesseling. I'm a big fan of
Michael Kesseling and have worked with him a little bit,
and I think Buffalo did a good move by you know,
you had to give up something. I think the ceiling
for kessel Ring and what they needed. And listen, it's
not always somebody gets fleeced and somebody wins. Sometimes both

(22:30):
teams can win. I think, listen, they got a good
player in Paterca. Do I think it's what they needed? Utah, No,
I don't think they needed another skilled forward. They had
enough of those. They think they needed middle depth and
at a high end centerman. They weren't able to secure that.
So they have a lot of good wingers. I just
don't know. They lose Buke's dad. I just don't love

(22:52):
what they did, and they give up Josh jon who's
a good a good two way winger can play up
and down the lineup, potentially as a ceiling to be
a top six, but he's a great, you know, valuable
versatile player. Michael Kessering was second and d scoring on
that Utah team when Sergachev was out and before Sergachev
came back and they were high up in the standings,

(23:13):
Michael Kessering was the guy they were going to playing
twenty five minutes a night, so he has the capabilities
to play eighteen minutes to twenty five minutes. I think
it's a big, big move and it really shores up
their top four in Buffalo, So I think it's a
good move. I think Buffalo is, you know, really locking
up some pieces. Ryan McCloud resigns there, and I just

(23:35):
think it's a It's a team that could surprise some
people next year. Now they it's only a win for
this team when they make the playoffs. So if they
just have a good season and miss it by two points,
it's the same Buffalo Sabers team. But I like to
move by both teams, more so for Buffalo than for Utah.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
And last thought for you again, Nikolai Eelers, according to
the NHL Network Research Department, the top free agent out
there a six billion dollar cap it. He turns twenty
nine years of age. Obviously was a key piece of
Winnipeg Jets. Do you want to prediction on Nikolai Elers.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Oh depends, you know, a guy like that, a European
guy sometimes always favors a little bit more on the
East Coast, family, easier travel. Uh, there's a few teams.
I could see him, you know, I could see the man,
you know, if the Rangers go and snag him up.
But I don't know if the cap space. I'm not
a super huge like. I don't follow the cap a ton.

(24:31):
I'm just like where I think guys should fit. But
I mean, looksten An Eilers could flip the script and
go over to in La or an Anaheim or or
you know, you got to think that. You gotta think
that Edmonton's and there's a lot of teams. He's a
guy that I'd said before, I like him more than
Mitch Marner for the money that he'll kind of command.

(24:54):
He's gonna probably command a ten million dollar deal. I
like that way more than paying Mitch Marner thirteen million.
I just think over time, he's just a winger that
can skate. He's not scared. Gets in the corners. He
did have he does have some injury issues, but I
think he's fixed it a little bit. He has had
some healthy years but plays power play plays penalty kill

(25:15):
and uh can can produce in the playoffs, So that's
a difference for me. I think there's a lot of
teams that could benefit from him. And if I just
gonna go and take a swing, I mean, Toronto's not
out of the mix either, No.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Amazing if the leaves get Elers. Just my last thought
on this, I was looking at the overall list and
we were talking about getting a skinner help in the Oilers.
As far as goalies, there really weren't like big guys available,
right Jake Allen, Damn Ladar signs with the Flyers. Yeah,
g orgyp samsonof Vanishek, But there's really not.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Yeah, it's tight. You're gonna have to get somebody young
or I don't know, there's I think the time to
do it was last year, in the year before that,
and they you know, sometimes you just wait too long
to pull the trigger and and I just feel like
after what we saw last year in the finals and
how he got pulled twice at two different times, I

(26:06):
think you had to address that. So but they didn't
really do much. I don't know. I'm worried about Edmonton
a bit. I'm a little bit worried. I'm nervous.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
Hopefully, hopefully the draft ends when it comes to Canada
as we uh unfortunate to live through that again. All right,
good stuff breaking down all the transactions. Coming up next
being JD breakdown the biggest winner from the NHL Draft.
Spoiler alert, it was not the format. We'll talk about
the players coming up next. All right, NHL Draft is

(26:44):
a ton of fun to watch from Los Angeles. Uh. Interesting,
Before we get to the picks, I want JD's thoughts
on the way we'd go down. So what's this term?
They use decentral line, so no one's there, so it
takes a lot longer, right for the guy gets picked.
I love the hug to Betman, right, Roger Goodell style.
And then they got let me let me walk you
back here, And all of a sudden, there's you know,
Danny Breer and Keith Jones talking to Porter Marton. There's

(27:05):
the brass. I got to be honesty, buddy, I know we.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Worked at the NHL.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
I got it felt the awkward to me. I'm missing
the guys in person.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
Right. Here's here's what I'll say to that. The GM's
voted for this. Gary Bettman said all right, you guys
want it, all right, let's do it awkward not a
fan when it looks like you're walking into the Fortress
of Solitude like you're in Superman talking to Kyel and
and the huge you know what I mean, That's what

(27:33):
it felt like. And then it's like, no one advised.
The GM's like, hey, let the moderator talk first. Yes,
and then like also like maybe as you're walking, the
kid be like, hey, just just we'll kind of tee
you up. Don't worry about it, like just like don't
like half the like three of the first five kids
walk and be like hey, what's up. And then they'd
be like an awkward pause, and the GM would be like, oh, hi,

(27:55):
how are you. They'd be like and then everybody'd be
like looking, and then there's like an echo and I'm like,
great to see you. And then and then I can't,
you know, I can't. I have to poke fun at
at at the Sharks where they had everybody hold Michael
Visa goes up and there's sixty people standing and it
looks like they're taking a family picture. And I just

(28:15):
was like, I love the Sharks. I just like I
was like, come on guys like, come on, don't do
things just to do things. Come on, don't do things
just to do things.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
But a great point view. Don't rag on Gary, this
is what they wanted. Fine, give you guys what you want.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
Gary did not want this and that I've and you know,
I think he wanted to keep it the way it was.
I mean, I was at the draft in the sphere
that was absolutely incredible where you could just walk over
to guys and tap on their shoulder. I know that
there's more calmness for the gms to make moves, but

(28:53):
I don't think anything really other than you know, making
the moves of you know, the draft. You're trading draft
picks and that that kind of gets a little bit squirrely.
So you get a really bound. It's around and you
have to be you have to have a war room
set up. So I understand there's a little bit of
a disconnect there and I get it. But listen, they
tried it.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
I don't think it was right.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
I don't love it. It extended it. It was too long.

Speaker 1 (29:16):
Yes, four and a half hours is crazy for the
first three hours.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
Not a round of golf here. This is just for
picking some kids and everybody already knows who they're picking. Yeah,
other than like there's a couple, you know, some people
throw people off on the board, and there's like some
random trades and stuff. But like the first five, it's
like you can just hand in a card and be like, yeah,
you know, probatherly than James Hagen's you dropped down.

Speaker 1 (29:37):
But I was about say, the only surprise he was
Hagen slipping. But let's talk about Matthew Schaeffer, who was
a great, great story. I mean, he hit a tough year,
various elements. You only played seventeen games last year, miss
nine games started the year due to mono. He was
injured in the World Junior's missed three plus months due
to broken collar bone. But everyone anticipated he'd go number
one overall and gone through at a hard times at
a young age. He lost his mom, Jennifer, to breast
cancer February of twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
Says he says a.

Speaker 1 (29:58):
Prayer before every gamulor no. He misses her and loves her.
You know, mom used to play hockey with the kids,
strapping on goalie pads at time, and it's obviously been
a lot to go through it. It was an emotional moment.
He goes up there, obviously the tears are coming down,
and the jersey even has the patch there as far
as you know, hockey cares for cancer. So classic move
by the Islanders and a really cool moment for Matthew Shaeffer.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Yeah, I mean it's hard not to have a tears
streaming down your face and get emotional hearing that, you know,
especially being an athlete, and you know our moms are
so integral to our careers, and it was just such
a sad, you know, joyous moment. They're very bittersweet, I'm
sure for him, and you just saw the emotion pouring

(30:39):
out of him, and for sure he held it together
probably as best he could. But just an amazing moment
for him and his family. I know there's some tough times,
you know, You've just and I've heard him speak multiple
times down interviews and watch a lot of his interviews.
Just such a well spoken, outspoken young man and just
understands and is so thoughtful in his conversation too. And

(31:02):
he looks you in the eye when he's talking to you,
and he's just very very mature for his age, and
he's got a bright future ahead of him. I'm very
bullish on him as a player and as a human being.
And it's just those stories that you root for in
the NHL, and you know, not listen, everybody has, you know,
loss in their life and it happens and it's part
of life. But you know, this kind of thing at

(31:24):
a young age and in that moment is just you know, magnified,
especially him being such a highly toted prospect. So he
handled it so well with grace and made his mom proud,
I'm sure, and his billet mom proud, and that whole
family should just be so proud of the man that
he is and the young man he is. And we
can kind of only help our children and kids have

(31:45):
that kind of strength mentally and emotional wherewithal to kind
of just be in the moment like that. So, you know,
credit to credit to the Islanders forgetting a really, really
good one and it's going to be a foundational piece
for your team and a foundational leader just by listening
to talk for a long time.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
Yeah, but two months for his mom, Jennifer passed away.
His mom, Emily died. You mentioned the fact looks every
in the eye. Our buddy, Mike Kelly tweeted that when
Shaeffer talked to everybody at the desk, he shook hands with
like all the audio guys, the camera guys, right, just
a little move, they just show little class.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
He's clearly a good kids my move.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Yeah, he can shake sail over the crew. Yeah, a
virtual handshake. One of the one of the drafts, Prognoscio
says schaff is the number one defense prospect in this
draft class. He's the complete package, playing a dynamic style
that generates results and influences the outcome of games. Easily
projects as a future All star in the NHL. Natural

(32:38):
born leader who oozes charisma. Defensive intensity has improved considerably
this year. Elite skater, elite processor.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Matthew Shafm. We had Mark tier Dano on the network
and he skates with Shaeffer and he was like, this
kid's for real. And that's high praise coming from Mark
tier Dano. Uh, you know Noris Trophy winner. He was like,
he gets it. He knows how to play both sides
of the park, can skate very quick, fast, good hands,
Uh yeah, great stick. Oh I love a good poke

(33:07):
check and he's got that in spades.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
Favorite pregame meal Matthew shav chicken, posta and broccoli. Also
needs a two hour and nap before games. That sounds
like a hockey player enjoys singing and dancing. Is a
huge Rihanna fan. From there we go to.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Mike Gana worst concert I ever been to my life.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
Oh really, lips played lipsyacing the entire time.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Yep. She middle of a song, reached down as the
track was going over and like took a sip of water.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
Oh Jess.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
I was like, just I should leave right now. I
have contact hies, so I have a stone ont of minds.
I couldn't move.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
I want to thought on your boy, Michael Mesa going
to the Sharks the pride of Oakville, Ontario. What if
nine players ever to receive CHL exceptional status. He had
two point oh six points per game this year, the
highest by an under eighteen Ohl skaters since Connor McDavid
grow up. A huge Leaves fan, patterns game after Mitch Marner.
As a kid, wore sixty six and he loved Mario Lemux.
When not playing HOWK golf, Billiard's paintball, and learning to

(34:06):
play the guitar and my favorite nugget is uncle Lucio
played hockey in several Olympic Games for Italy. What do
you got on Michael Mesic all the Sharks?

Speaker 2 (34:15):
Highly skilled, iley skilled forward, great release that Listen. There
was a lot of talk of like, will it be
somebody else? Will it be Hagans, will it be Martone?
You know, do the Sharks go off the board? They
took the best player available at two smart play by
Mike Career and that staff. Uh, that's the guy you
need to bring in. They have some very, very highly

(34:35):
skilled forwards right now, and they could turn their attention
now to fixing the defense and making sure that they
bring in a bunch of young or older guys because
they're they're really rounding out their offensive forward group there.
And he's going to be a huge piece and he's
I think he's gonna have an immediate impact for this team.
And yeah, he's a good player of good size on
him too. I like it a lot. And San Jose Man,

(34:59):
I think the turnarounds me a lot quicker than people think.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
I like it your Sharks, let's go by the way.
I want to also mention Caleb Danioier because in terms
of the most awkward moments in terms of talking with that.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Was hysterical, so weird.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
Hey, what's up?

Speaker 2 (35:12):
Of course the Utah Bill Armstrong.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Then, by the way, Caleb Danioie, he said his favorite
activity outside of hockey is fishing. Favorite protein the Montreal
Alouette's favorite subject in school English because it's easier than French.
How about that tal like that?

Speaker 2 (35:27):
There you go Caleb.

Speaker 1 (35:30):
Favorite yeah, played from monked favorite pump up song. By
the way, Burning Heart by Survivor, which is also a
Rocky four tune. There it goes, love Porter Martungle to
the Flyers. He needed some size, needs some scale. Obviously
really happy with that pick. Some comps to Corey Perry,
I heard Kevin Weeks sing about the badcast. Some people
say maybe more like a right handed Matthew could chuck,
but looks like a really good player. You mentioned Hagen's

(35:50):
though he was the guy that at one point, I
think you're right to say he wasn't gonna go first.
Different kind of new it with Shaffer, but a lot
of people have him going third. Potentially obviously played at
Boston College. Some comps to Clayton Keller slides a little
bit like it wasn't you know, it wasn't sirdhurt Sanders,
but did fall to seventh to like he went to
the third round, but still falling to the Boston Bruins
at seven. I was surprised your reacts to the fact

(36:10):
Hagen's who clue looks a really good player, just didn't
go in the top six.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
I got to interview this guy twice. I tell you
what you want to talk about a kid that maintains
eye contact and is very well spoken and is very
very polished, so much so that I think him falling
that far as a mistake. He's very mature for his age,
and I really liked what I saw, very very firm handshake,

(36:37):
very good, very thoughtful in what he's saying and what
he's speaking, you know, really acknowledges his family, but acknowledges
that he's willing to do anything or do anything for
the team. You know, obviously, listen, those are the cliche answers,
but you know when a guy's bullshitting and when of
guy's being honest. And I do think he's going to
take this as a slight and really use it to

(36:58):
prepare himself. So I think Boston somehow luckily fell ass
backwards to a great talent and then managed to after
they just screwed the pooch all year. I think they
go lucky. I think they got lucky getting him, and
it's a good pick that they fell to him, and
I think he's a good future, very very good player
for this team.

Speaker 1 (37:19):
Hagen's grew up Suffolk County, Long Island, big Islanders fan
with to tons of Ales games. As a kid, John
Tavares was his favorite player, played football lacrosse as a
kid during the summers. He's the captain of a fishing
charter called Captain lou Fleet. He's the toughest task in
the boat by the ways, untangling fishing lines. But clearly
he's a guy who likes to get after it. Loves
country music, especially Sam Barber and Florida Georgia Line. Didn't

(37:40):
know they were big in Long Island.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Yes, Dad makes him work the boat still to this
day when it's pretty funny. Yeah, yeah, all right.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
So that was his draft, honestly, a ton of fun.
Congrats all the players who were drafted, and I'm with you.
Hopefully we'll get back to the format we've seen in
the past, but they tried something different. Hope of the
players who wished the much success moving forward, who's.

Speaker 2 (37:58):
Your biggest winner of the draft?

Speaker 1 (37:59):
I think it's the Islanders, honestly, not just getting obviously Shaeffer,
but three picks over all the first round.

Speaker 2 (38:04):
They did good. They picked all good players. Yeah, so
Rachool on the way, Yeah, they're good. Matthew Darsh is
cooking right now, Gas. I don't know if you know
that he's cooking, Chef Darsh with the pots on.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Nothing like a summer blockbuster being billed as the greatest
car racing movie of all time F one starring Brad Pitt.
This is the that was the hype for it and
the reason why. Of course you they go, Well, Lewis
Hamilton's involved with the great F one drivers ever. He
was their special consultant. Joseph Kasinski directed, of course, he
did Top On Maverick, so perhaps the greatest car racing
movie ever. JAVIERD. Bergdam giving a little gravitas as well.

(38:45):
I haven't seen it yet, eager to see at some
point you're all over. Did just see it an imax
in Arizona?

Speaker 2 (38:50):
I did me and and uh wait this is pre
Italy for her?

Speaker 1 (38:55):
Or after really okay.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
After it. Yeah, she's she's not. It's the summer of
jail right now, the summer of jail. Yeah, having the
hell of a summer. It's all research. Everything's research, I
know it. We kind of both looked at each other's like,
how do you feel about it? And uh, I liked it.
It's a good popcorn flick. You know. It's a lot
like Top Gun The New You know that. It's just

(39:17):
very loud. The music's great, gets you fired up. Hans
Zimmerman my friend. I love him. Anything you give me.
Hans zimmer on the on the I just would love
to pay him to serenade me for a night.

Speaker 1 (39:29):
I love.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Tones. He Brad Pitt plays. Brad Pitt plays like kind
of a sexy hobo that has some like weight to
his life. And you know that he does the same thing.
He's eating in half the scenes and he plays he
does the yeah, you know, just it's Brad Pitt. He

(39:52):
plays Brad Pitt to a t.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
My wife wants. He takes his shirt off, his.

Speaker 2 (39:57):
Shirts off the whole time. Yeah, my shirts off the
whole time he's running. He's like a little aloof His
counterpart is very good as well. The Jonathan Pierce, the
guy that races with him, I'm not you know the names.
And then the Irish lasts that plays the technical coordinator

(40:20):
for the team is very good as well. They have
a little love interest. It's nice, but yeah, it's good.
I think it. The weird thing is is it gave
me weird flashbacks have Driven with Sylvester Stallone back in
the day. If you've seen Driven or anybody that's listening
has scene Driven, it's very similar. It's like especially like
and I can't spoil the last scene, but like it's

(40:42):
very similar to like Driven of like, you know, it's
this older guy that's out of the game and they
bring him back in to help the young guy that's
kind of finding his way because you know, they're in
trouble otherwise they haven't been able to finish a race
and they really need to get this guy that has
all this talent to figure it out. And then this
kid just resists. The old man at this are being like,

(41:05):
who's this guy? You're out of the game, you were
never was and being like, I can teach you some things, son,
and then they and then the teaching happens, and then
near the end he realizes, oh, my god, this guy
he knows, he knows what he's talking about. And anyway,
it's just one of those.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
The story not particularly original, but the executioner.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Yeah a little bit, yeah it, but it was the
cinematography of it and the way they filmed it and
as well as the music and and and just the
action side of it was great. Was great, And I
just say it's a great watch. If you're a fan
of Driving in F one, I mean, definitely go see it.
You'll love it. And even if you don't, they explain

(41:44):
a lot of it pretty well and they kind of
walk people through it that aren't necessarily like students of
the game. And I thought it was very, very very good.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
I love the idea of the double bill because now
I want now I want to watch it and then
watch Driven.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
That watch both.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Yeah, that's great.

Speaker 2 (41:59):
I want you because you have a good mind for
it and like you'll be like, oh, yeah, this is
this is exactly.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
But should I watch Driven first and then watch F
one or like I don't.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
Know what, watch Driven first and then F one.

Speaker 1 (42:11):
It's the rule that f fun for me.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
Like christ it's so much show that I like I
went on you know because like I'll go on Twitter
and see like if people are thinking the same thing
as me, So I like put like in the search bar.
I was like Driven is like F one, and I
was trying to see if anybody was like being like,
is that the same plot the Sylvester Salona's Brad Pitt
And it's the same plot, feels the same, And you'll

(42:36):
know the scene exactly. Watch Driven first because you'll know
the scene and you'll text me during F one when
the scene happens, you're like, this was ripped off.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
I can't exactly now. Now I'm actually really excited to
watch that one scene what I ripped off? Plagerism is
going on, good old Hollywood, No new ideas. F one
currently in theaters. Final NHL coaching vacancy filled in Glenn
Glisten named the Dallas Stars head coach. Served as Dallas's
head coach for two seasons before he coached the Flames
for a couple of years. He was an assistant for
Edmonton the past seven years. Dallas recent signs Matt tew Shane.

(43:05):
They did lose Gramlin As we talked about an koty
CC what do you make of this?

Speaker 2 (43:09):
Yeah, he's got some work to do. I don't know.
The Spider Man meme is like see different than the
last version. And you know they had they do have
a lot of youth in Dallas and jim Nail there.
They're always great from you know, replenishing their team from
the miners, and they have these guys that just they're
just they developed so well and they draft so well.
So I'm not too worried about it. I think they're

(43:31):
gonna be right up there with everybody. I think this
is kind of the last dance, last chance you for
second and Ben and this will be their last opportunity.
So I think they're really going to go all in
as a team. Galardi and in this whole, this whole
franchise will go in to make sure they have one
last kick at winning or you know, if it's not
going good, I think they'll probably move one or both

(43:53):
those guys give them a chance to win. So I
could see Jamie Ben either going on one more long
playoff run or get moved as a rental and going
to UH attempt to win a Cup.

Speaker 1 (44:05):
Long in the tooth you mentioned. Corey Perry obviously signed
with the Kings forty years of age, playing the cup
File five or the past six seasons. It's amazing. I'm
with you, like the King's like it's a nice little story.
But I still don't know. I mean, they've got work
to get over the hump. No one's gonna say this
all right now, they're gonna be a team.

Speaker 2 (44:20):
I love Cody c s as a guy, but like
they give him sixteen what seventeen million or eighteen million
for four years?

Speaker 1 (44:27):
Well thank you. This segues perfectly to the what the
what the hell were they thinking? The probo off deal
seven years in Columbus blew me away, j D. I said,
this guy, yeah, it's a second pair of defenseman. Yes,
maybe maybe he's a number two yeah yeah. To me,
he's a number three, number four, right, and I'm like
top three, top three seven years, like seven different pro

(44:49):
for off Like that blew me away. Like I was like,
maybe if your teams on the costume like came in,
we get the solid defense. Okay, fine, but Columbus, like
you're a borderline playoff team. You're two points back seven
years of ibprobra. It's a lot to surprise me that one.
I honestly had the double checkering that right, Like no
it's right years.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
I see I see Ivan Provov and I raise your Tanner, Jane.

Speaker 1 (45:11):
Tanner, you know Boston five year contract.

Speaker 2 (45:13):
Well, what the fuck is Boston doing? Don Sweetey gets Hagins,
makes a good deal. Everybody goes, Okay, here we go.
There's a lot to love. And then it goes and
just brings in. Victor Arvid said Tanner, you know, and
I'm like, oh, no, what the fuck are we doing
over there? Like, just get it together? Are we in

(45:34):
or we out? Like I don't understand. It's just but yeah,
there's and again, guys are gonna get paid. I'm I'm
number one on the bandwagon for guys getting paid and
getting their money's worth. But I I went so far
as the tweet saying like congratulations the guys. But you know,
I'll offer my services if teams are looking to spend
some more spending the cap floor one more. Wait, just

(45:57):
sign me a million dollars and let me help out
the young guys, and I'll you know, be funny guy
and just you know, be a borderline coach. Yeah, just
let me in.

Speaker 1 (46:06):
Thirty six year old Jason Numurs, to be clear, four
years younger still than your buddy Brent Burns, so don't
tell me we can't get to mercy.

Speaker 2 (46:12):
Jonathan Taves is back in the league. He took three
years off. I took one and a half. I'm still
active in the community.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
Still skating, still available, whatever you need. And Trent Frederick,
I think you had mentioned this before, the eight year
extension of that.

Speaker 2 (46:31):
That's not going to age. Well.

Speaker 1 (46:32):
